Abstract

We report the observation of dramatic consequences of dimensional reduction onto the motional state of a quantum gas restricted to a curved two-dimensional surface. We start from the ellipsoidal geometry of a dressed quadrupole trap and introduce a novel gravity compensation mechanism enabling to explore the full ellipsoid. The dimensional reduction manifests itself by the spontaneous emergence of an annular shape in the atomic distribution, due to the zero-point energy of the transverse confinement. The experimental results are compared with the solution of the three dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation and with a two-dimensional semi-analytical model. This work evidences how a hidden dimension can affect dramatically the embedded low dimensional system by inducing a change of topology.

Abstract

We report on the observation and coherent excitation of atoms on the narrow inner-shell orbital transition, connecting the erbium ground state $[\mathrm{Xe}] 4f^{12} (^3\text{H}_6)6s^{2}$ to the excited state $[\mathrm{Xe}] 4f^{11}(^4\text{I}_{15/2})^05d (^5\text{D}_{3/2}) 6s^{2} (15/2,3/2)^0_7$. This transition corresponds to a wavelength of 1299 nm and is optically closed. We perform high-resolution spectroscopy to extract the $g_J$-factor of the $1299$-nm state and to determine the frequency shift for four bosonic isotopes. We further demonstrate coherent control of the atomic state and extract a lifetime of 178(19) ms which corresponds to a linewidth of 0.9(1) Hz. The experimental findings are in good agreement with our semi-empirical model. In addition, we present theoretical calculations of the atomic polarizability, revealing several different magic-wavelength conditions. Finally, we make use of the vectorial polarizability and confirm a possible magic wavelength at 532 nm., 14 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

In this article we explore the dynamics of a Brownian particle in a feedback-free dynamic thermophoretic trap. The trap contains a focused laser beam heating a circular gold structure locally and creating a repulsive thermal potential for a Brownian particle. In order to confine a particle the heating beam is steered along the circumference of the gold structure leading to a non-trivial motion of the particle. We theoretically find a stability condition by switching to a rotating frame, where the laser beam is at rest. Particle trajectories and stable points are calculated as a function of the laser rotations frequency and are experimentally confirmed. Additionally, the effect of Brownian motion is considered. The present study complements the dynamic thermophoretic trapping with a theoretical basis and will enhance the applicability in micro- and nanofluidic devices., 7 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We present a joint experimental and theoretical investigation of the lifetime of weakly bound dimers formed near narrow interspecies Feshbach resonances in mass-imbalanced Fermi-Fermi systems, considering the specific example of a mixture of $^6$Li and $^{40}$K atoms. Our work addresses the central question of the increase in the stability of the dimers resulting from Pauli suppression of collisional losses, which is a well-known effect in mass-balanced fermionic systems near broad resonances. We present measurements of the spontaneous dissociation of dimers in dilute samples, and of the collisional losses in dense samples arising from both dimer-dimer processes and from atom-dimer processes. We find that all loss processes are suppressed close to the Feshbach resonance. Our general theoretical approach for fermionic mixtures near narrow Feshbach resonances provides predictions for the suppression of collisional decay as a function of the detuning from resonance, and we find excellent agreement with the experimental benchmarks provided by our $^6$Li-$^{40}$K system. We finally present model calculations for other Feshbach-resonant Fermi-Fermi systems, which are of interest for experiments in the near future.

Abstract

Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society 446(2), 1163 - 1169 (2015). doi:10.1093/mnras/stu2148, The region around the supernova remnant (SNR) W41 contains several TeV sources and has prompted the HESS Collaboration to perform deep observations of this field of view. This resulted in the discovery of the new very high energy (VHE) source HESS J1832−093, at the position $RA=18^{h}32^{m}50^{s} \pm 3^{s}_{stat}\pm2^{s}_{syst},Dec=−9^\circ22^{\prime} 36^{\prime\prime} \pm 32^{\prime\prime}_{stat} \pm 20^{\prime\prime}_{syst}(J2000)$, spatially coincident with a part of the radio shell of the neighbouring remnant G22.7−0.2. The photon spectrum is well described by a power law of index Γ = 2.6 $\pm$ 0.3$_{stat}$ $\pm$ 0.1$_{syst}$ and a normalization at 1 TeV of Φ$_{0}=(4.8 \pm 0.8_{stat} \pm 1.0_{syst}) ×10^{−13}cm^{−2}s^{−1}TeV^{−1}$. The location of the gamma-ray emission on the edge of the SNR rim first suggested a signature of escaping cosmic rays illuminating a nearby molecular cloud. Then a dedicated XMM–Newton observation led to the discovery of a new X-ray point source spatially coincident with the TeV excess. Two other scenarios were hence proposed to identify the nature of HESS J1832−093. Gamma-rays from inverse Compton radiation in the framework of a pulsar wind nebula scenario or the possibility of gamma-ray production within a binary system are therefore also considered. We detect the magnitude and the direction of these supercurrents by measuring spiral patterns resulting from the interference of the cloud with a central reference disk. These measurements demonstrate the stochastic nature of the supercurrents. We further measure their distribution for different quench times and compare it with predictions based on the Kibble-Zurek mechanism.

Abstract

We present a state-of-the-art reanalysis of experimental results on Efimov resonances in the three-fermion system of $^6$Li. We discuss different definitions of the 3-body parameter (3BP) for Efimov states, and adopt a definition that excludes effects due to deviations from universal scaling for low-lying states. We develop a finite-temperature model for the case of three distinguishable fermions and apply it to the excited-state Efimov resonance to obtain the most accurate determination to date of the 3BP in an atomic three-body system. Our analysis of ground-state Efimov resonances in the same system yields values for the three-body parameter that are consistent with the excited-state result. Recent work has suggested that the reduced 3BP for atomic systems is a near-universal quantity, almost independent of the particular atom involved. However, the value of the 3BP obtained for $^6$Li is significantly ($\sim 20$%) different from that previously obtained from the excited-state resonance in Cs. Abstract

We investigate a mixture of ultracold fermionic 40K atoms and weakly bound 6Li40K dimers on the repulsive side of a heteronuclear atomic Feshbach resonance. By radio-frequency spectroscopy we demonstrate that the normally repulsive atom-dimer interaction is turned into a strong attraction. The phenomenon can be understood as a three-body effect in which two heavy 40K fermions exchange the light 6Li atom, leading to attraction in odd partial-wave channels (mainly p wave). Our observations show that mass imbalance in a fermionic system can profoundly change the character of interactions as compared to the well-established mass-balanced case.

Quantum Mechanics Born to Be Linear Two pillars of modern physics, quantum mechanics and gravity, have so far resisted attempts to be reconciled into one grand theory. This has prompted suggestions that theories about either or both need to be modified at a fundamental level. Sinha et al. (p. 418 ; see the Perspective by Franson ) looked at the interference pattern resulting from a number of slits, to test the “Born rule” of quantum mechanics. They verified that Born holds true—that the interference pattern is built up by the interference from two paths, and two paths only, with no higher-order paths interfering. The result rules out any nonlinear theories of quantum mechanics; thus, any modification of theory will need to take into account that quantum mechanics is linear.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we present a new form of the nucleation theorems applicable to heterogeneous nucleation. These heterogeneous nucleation theorems allow, for the first time, direct determination of properties of nanoclusters formed on pre-existing particles from measured heterogeneous nucleation probabilities. The theorems can be used to analyze the size (first theorem) and the energetics (second theorem) of heterogeneous clusters independent of any specific nucleation model. We apply the first theorem to the study of small water and n-propanol clusters formed at the surface of 8 nm silver particles. According to the experiments the size of the two-component critical clusters is found to be below 90 molecules, and only less than 20 molecules for pure water, less than 300 molecules for pure n-propanol. These values are drastically smaller than the ones predicted by the classical nucleation theory, which clearly indicates that the nucleating clusters are too small to be quantitatively described using a macroscopic theory.

Abstract

The mass accommodation coefficient of water is a quantity for which different experimental techniques have yielded conflicting values in the range 0.04-1. From the viewpoint of cloud modelling, this is an unfortunate situation, since the value of the mass accommodation coefficient affects the model results, e.g. the number concentration of activated cloud droplets. In this commentary we note that in cloud modelling, the primary quantity of interest is the droplet growth rate rather than the mass accommodation coefficient, and that experimental investigations of droplet growth rates provide more direct verification of cloud models than do measurements of the mass accommodation coefficient. Furthermore, we argue that the droplet growth rates calculated in cloud model studies are consistent with experimental results obtained so far only if a mass accommodation coefficient of unity is applied.
