Plasmonic nanoparticle clusters promise to support unique engineered electromagnetic responses at optical frequencies, realizing a new concept of devices for nanophotonic applications. However, the technological challenges associated with the fabrication of three-dimensional nanoparticle clusters with programmed compositions remain unresolved. Here, we present a novel strategy for realizing heterogeneous structures that enable efficient near-field coupling between the plasmonic modes of gold nanoparticles and various other nanomaterials via a simple three-dimensional coassembly process. Quantum dots embedded in the plasmonic structures display ∼56 meV of a blue shift in the emission spectrum. The decay enhancement factor increases as the total contribution of radiative and nonradiative plasmonic modes increases. Furthermore, we demonstrate an ultracompact diagnostic platform to detect M13 viruses and their mutations from femtoliter volume, sub-100 pM analytes. This platform could pave the way toward an effective diagnosis of diverse pathogens, which is in high demand for handling pandemic situations.

Objective: This study was performed to determine the effects of stress after road transportation and oral administration of chromium and meloxicam on growth performance, plasma cortisol, serum metabolites, and behavior in dairy calves.Methods: A total of 50 Holstein heifers (average body weight [BW]: 172±4.19 kg; average age: 5.53±0.12 months) were randomly assigned to five groups including NL (not transported + D-lactose; 1 mg/kg BW), TL (transported + D-lactose; 1 mg/kg BW), TC (transported + chromium; 0.5 mg/kg dry matter [DM] feed), TM (transported + meloxicam; 1 mg/kg BW), and TMC (transported + combination of meloxicam and chromium; 1 mg/kg BW and 0.5 mg/kg DM, respectively). Doses of D-lactose monohydrate, meloxicam, and chromium were prepared for oral administration by suspension in 15 mL of water in a 20-mL dosing syringe. Blood was collected before transportation, immediately after 120 km of transportation (IAT), and at 6, 24, and 48 h after transportation.Results: Neither transportation nor administration of meloxicam and/or chromium affected (p = 0.99) average daily gain and feed intake. Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless, tasteless, extremely flammable, and highly toxic gas. It is produced when there is insufficient oxygen supply during the combustion of carbon to produce carbon dioxide (CO2). CO is produced from operating engines, stoves, or furnaces. CO poisoning occurs when CO accumulates in the bloodstream and can result in severe tissue damage or even death. Many types of CO sensors have been reported, including electrochemical, semiconductor metal-oxide, catalytic combustion, thermal conductivity, and infrared absorption-type for the detection of CO. However, despite their excellent selectivity and sensitivity, issues such as complexity, power consumption, and calibration limit their applications. In this study, a fabricbased colorimetric CO sensor is proposed to address these issues. Potassium disulfitopalladate (II) (K2Pd(SO3)2) is dyed on a polyester fabric as a sensing material for selective CO detection. The sensing characteristics and performance are investigated using optical instruments such as RGB sensor and spectrometer. The sensor shows immediate color change when exposed to CO at a concentration that is even lower than 20 ppm before 2 min. The fast response time of the sensor is attributed to its high porosity to react with CO. This easy-to-fabricate and cost-effective sensor can detect and prevent the leakage of CO simultaneously with high sensitivity and selectivity toward CO.

Halophilic microbial eukaryotes are present in many eukaryotic lineages and major groups; however, our knowledge of their diversity is still limited. Furthermore, almost nothing is known about the intracellular accumulation of salts in most halophilic eukaryotes. Here, we isolate a novel halophilic microbial eukaryote from hypersaline water of 134 practical salinity units (PSU) in a solar saltern. This species is an amoeboflagellate (capable of the amoeba-flagellate-cyst transformation) in the heterolobosean group and belongs to the genus Euplaesiobystra based on morphological data and 18S rDNA sequences. However, the isolate is distinct from any of the described Euplaesiobystra species. Especially, it is the smallest Euplaesiobystra to date, has a distinct cytostome, and grows optimally at 75–100 PSU. Furthermore, the phylogenetic tree of the 18S rDNA sequences demonstrates that the isolate forms a strongly supported group, sister to Euplaesiobystra hypersalinica. Thus, we propose that the isolate, Euplaesiobystra salpumilio, is a novel species. E. salpumilio displays a significantly increased influx of the intracellular Na+ and K+ at 50, 100, and 150 PSU, compared to freshwater species. However, the intracellular retention of the Na+ and K+ at 150 PSU does not significantly differ from 100 PSU, suggesting that E. salpumilio can extrude the Na+ and K+ from cells under high-salinity conditions. Interestingly, actively growing E. salpumilio at 100 and 150 PSU may require more intracellular accumulation of Na+ than the no-growth but-viable state at 50 PSU. It seems that our isolate displays two salt metabolisms depending on the tested salinities. E. salpumilio shows a salt-in strategy for Na+ at lower salinity of 100 PSU, while it displays a salt-out strategy for Na+ at higher salinity of 150 PSU. Our results suggest that the novel halophilic E. salpumilio fundamentally uses a salt-out strategy at higher salinities, and the accumulation patterns of intracellular salts in this species are different from those in other halophilic microbial eukaryotes.

The aim of this study is to describe radiographic, ultrasonographic, and computed tomographic appearance of normal cinereous vulture’s eye and to determine normal biometric values of intraocular structures. Twenty-six eyes of thirteen healthy cinereous vultures were examined. Under general anesthesia with isoflurane, ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT) and skull radiography were performed. Understanding and knowledge regarding basic sexual behavior constitute a logical starting point for captive breeding of the endangered Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus, ABB) in the Republic of Korea. This study was therefore undertaken to create an ethogram for the sexual behaviors of ABB and to describe the time budget of the relevant behaviors. To create an ethogram, six adult ABBs (three females, three males) in captivity were observed using the Internet protocol cameras for 3 years without recording, and a pair of male and female ABBs were observed similarly with a recording system for two different years to collect the time budget data. We confirmed 23 distinct sexual behaviors and established, for the first time, an ethogram for sexual behaviors in ABB, including duration of individual behavior. Total sexual behavior was mostly observed between 11:00 and 13:00 hours, between 16:00 and 18:00 hours, and more frequently during the first week of July. Mean duration of courtships were 7.9 ± 3.5 minutes (when the courtship advanced to mating) or 15.2 ± 9.1 minutes (when the courtship did not advance to mating), mean duration of mating was 20.1 ± 9.6 minutes (when shivering, indicating ejaculation, was included) or 11.1 ± 4.0 minutes (when shivering was not included), and mean refractory duration was 1206.3 ± 858.2 minutes. These data could be applied by veterinarians and other biologists engaged in breeding the endangered bears in captivity. Furthermore, these data may be the basis for theriogenology studies in bears.

This paper proposes a system that provides video streaming services from the Internet of Media Things using blockchain and cryptocurrency (token). The user pays the token by the contract terms of the smart contract written on the blockchain through the distributed application (DApp). The IP camera, which is paid the token, streams the taken video to the user in real-time. To investigate the possibility of a blockchain camera streaming service, we upload a smart contract for streaming service on Etherium-based blockchain, and ERC20 tokens necessary for the transaction are created and implemented. To overcome the slow trading speed and the disability of proper refunding, the off-chain transaction, one of the blockchain scaling techniques, was applied and implemented in the system.

We reveal the significance of plasmonic nanoparticle’s (NP) shape and its surface morphology en route to an efficient self-assembled plasmonic nanoparticle cluster. A simplified model is simulated in the form of free-space dimer and trimer nanostructures (NPs in shape of sphere, cube, and disk). A ~ 200 % to ~ 125% raise in near field strength (gap mode enhancement) is observed for spherical NPs in comparison with cubical NPs (from 2 nm to 8 nm gap sizes). Full-width three-quarter maximum reveals better broad-spectral optical performance in a range of ~ 100 nm (dimer) and ~ 170 nm (trimer) from spherical NPs as compared to a cube (~ 60 nm for dimer and trimer). These excellent properties for sphere-based nanostructures are merited from its dipole mode characteristics.

The information on animal weight is often an essential component of wildlife management and research. However, it may be difficult to obtain direct scale weights from the free-ranging large animals when equipment needed to weigh the animals are inadequate or unavailable. In these cases, body weight can be estimated by morphometric equation. We investigated body mass and size (16 body parts) of reintroduced Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus; ABB) and their offsprings (28 males and 24 females, age 7 months − 12 years) between 2005 and 2013. Mean body weight of adult females and males in September − December were 132.2 ± 11.8 and 166.6 ± 7.2 kg, respectively, which was higher than those in April − August (103.8 ± 5.6 and 141.7 ± 6.3 kg, respectively). We developed three predictive equations for body mass by pad width and season that can utilize the footprint size before capturing. In addition, we also developed eleven multiple regression models to predict body mass through body part measurements after capturing, and selected two best models including neck girth, chest girth, body length, season, and sex. This study is the first to develop predictive equations for body mass by simple measurements of body parts in ABB. This data will not only help to understand the relationship between the weight and body size of reintroduced bears, but by estimating the weight without a scale, it will help to make the task easier and faster and to determine the appropriate anesthetic dose in the field.

A facile new synthetic method for the preparation of a Type-A 1-arylnaphthalene lactone skeleton was developed and used to synthesise justicidin B and several derivatives. Key synthesis steps included Hauser-Kraus annulation of a phthalide intermediate and Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling between a triflated naphthalene lactone intermediate and various potassium organotrifluoroborates. With two exceptions, the derivatives showed significant inhibitory effect on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide (NO) production in mouse macrophages. Moreover, several compounds, including justicidin B, had marked cytotoxicity towards six human tumour cell lines.

Introduction: In this study, a dual release bi-layer tablet containing Fesoterodine fumarate (Fst) 5 mg and Mirabegron (Mrb) 50 mg was prepared to investigate the different release behavior of each drug in bilayer tablet. The bilayer tablet was prepared based on monolayer-tablet formulation of each drug. Methods: The optimized bi-layer tablet showed an in vitro dissolution profile similar to commercial reference tablets Toviaz and Betmiga, based on a satisfactory similarity factor. Drug-release kinetics of each drug in the bilayer tablet were evaluated based on dissolution profiles. Drug-release behavior was evaluated by observing the surface of each layer by scanning electron microscopy and measuring the changes in weight and volume of the tablet during dissolution. Drug transfer between each layer was also investigated by Fourier -transform infrared spectroscopic imaging by observing the cross-section of the bilayer tablet cut vertically during dissolution. Results: The release of Fst was well suited for the Higuchi model, and the release of Mrb was well suited for the Hixson-crowell model. Compared with dissolution rate of each monolayer tablet, that of Fst in the bilayer tablet was slightly reduced (5%), but the dissolution rate of Mrb in bilayer tablet was dramatically decreased (20%). Also, a drug-release study confirmed that polymer swelling was dominant in Fst layer compared with polymer erosion, and degradation was dominant in MRB layer. Fourier-transform infrared imaging and 3-D image reconstruction showed that drug transfer in the bilayer tablet correlates with the results of drug-release behavior. Conclusion: These findings are expected to provide scientific insights in the development of a dual-release bilayer drug-delivery system for Fst and Mrb.

A clonorchiasis case in a captive leopard cat, Prionailurus bengalensis euptilurus, was confirmed by ultrasonographic findings and egg morphologies found in the bile juice sample in the Korea. The leopard cat was introduced from the wild habitat of Gyeongsangnam-do, to Cheongju Zoo in Cheongju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea in August 2014. Physical examinations were basically performed for quarantine and check-up health. The cat was comparatively good in health except anorexia. The cyst-like bile duct dilation and the increased echogenicity of gall bladder wall and hepatic parenchyma were observed by ultrasonography. Ultrasound-guided needle biopsy was conducted for collecting bile juice and the specimens were observed under light microscope. The numerous small trematode eggs were detected in the bile juice sample of the light microscopy. The eggs were 25-33 (28±3) μm by 18-22 (20±1) μm in size and showed typical characteristics of Clonorchis sinensis egg, i.e., a dominantly developed operculum, shoulder rim and dust-like wrinkles in surface. To treat the liver fluke infection, 20 mg/kg of praziquantel was orally administered only once to the case. Follow-up studies including fecal examinations were conducted during 2 years after treatment. But no more eggs were detected from the case. In the present study, we described the first clonorchiasis case of leopard cat, which was confirmed by ultrasonographic findings and egg morphologies from the bile juice sample in Korea.

In this study, electric energy storage properties of (Pb0.89La0.11)(Zr0.70Ti0.30)0.9725O3 (PLZT 11/70/30) relaxor ceramics were investigated. XRD pattern and SEM image confirms the perovskite phase and dense structure without any secondary phases and pores, respectively. Room temperature dielectric constant was found to be high (~ 3520) with low dielectric loss (~ 0.03). Dielectric constant changes with temperature confirm the relaxor ferroelectric behaviour of PLZT ceramics. Different parameters such as degree of deviation (ΔTm) from the Curie–Weiss law, the diffuseness of the phase transition (ΔTdiff) and degree of diffuseness (γ), which are related to the relaxor nature of ferroelectrics were calculated. With the remarkably slim polarization versus electric field hysteresis loops even at high applied electric field, high energy storage of 0.85 J/cm3 and very high energy storage efficiency of 92.9% were obtained from the PLZT ceramics. These values suggest that the PLZT 11/70/30 composition can be used for the pulse driving energy storage applications.

Background The rehabilitation of injured wildlife and their subsequent release into the wild is a humane act as well as important in wildlife conservation. However, little is known about the animals’ fate after release. Therefore, to address these uncertainties, it is essential to adequately describe how the injured animals were treated and managed before releasing into the wild; moreover, post-release monitoring should also be performed. Herein, we document for the first time the process of rescue, surgery, and rehabilitation of severely injured Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus; endangered species in South Korea) and their fate after returning to the wild. Case presentation A six-year-old female (bear-01) and a three-year-old male (bear-02) bears were injured by an illegal snare and collision with a bus, respectively. Bear-01 had broad muscle necrosis and ruptures from the snared ankle on the right thoracic limb, with myiasis, and elbow disarticulation was performed. In bear-02, a non-reducible comminuted fracture of the left humerus was confirmed radiologically, and the operation was performed by using dual plate fixation with hydroxyapatite and recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2. The bear-01 and -02 were completely healed approximately 30 and 60 days after surgery, respectively. After that, they underwent rehabilitation for 8 and 25 days, respectively, in an outdoor enclosure similar to their natural habitat. Bear-01 and -02 were released into the wild after 45 and 99 days after surgery, respectively, and their mean daily movement distance during the first 30 days after releasing was 2.9 ± 2.1 and 1.3 ± 1.6 km, respectively. The annual mean 95% Kernel home-range size of bear-01 and bear-02 was 265.8 and 486.9 km2, respectively. They hibernated every winter, gained weight, gave birth to cubs (bear-01), were not found to have any abnormalities in the veterinary tests, and were not involved in any conflicts with humans after returning to the wild. Conclusions Bears without one leg or those with dual plates could adapt well in their natural habitat, which shows that our surgical and post-operative treatments were effective. Additionally, minimizing human contact and observing/evaluating behavior during the rehabilitation is essential in reducing human-bear conflicts after release.

Goal setting is one of the most frequently used mental skills in sports, and Goal Setting Theory (GST; Locke and Latham, 2002) has been the most prominent theoretical framework upon which goal setting interventions are based. The present study provides a systematic review examining how the tenets of GST have been applied to goal setting interventions in sport. A total of 27 peer-reviewed studies written in English, which implemented goal setting interventions with athletes in a sport-specific, applied (i.e., non-laboratory) context, were examined. The studies included athletes from a range of individual and team sports. The majority of these studies were characterized by their small sample size and strong focus on performance as an outcome measure. Overall, there was inconsistent application of, and mixed evidence supporting theorizing around, the goal characteristics (goal difficulty, specificity, proximity, source, and type) and moderators (ability, commitment, feedback, complexity, and resources) suggested in GST. As the first systematic review of goal setting interventions focused exclusively on athletes in applied sport contexts, the present review provides insight for athletes, coaches, sport psychology practitioners, and researchers. Applied implications and future research directions (e.g., testing individualized goal setting interventions) are provided.

Objectives: The exertion of self-control has been associated with impaired performance on subsequent physical tasks also requiring self-control. However, the effect in well-trained individuals, and of nutritional intervention strategies to reduce the impact of self-control exertion are unknown. This study, therefore, explored the effect of self-control exertion on endurance performance, and pacing strategies, in well-trained individuals. A further aim was to examine the potential for a caffeine mouth rinse to attenuate any decrements in performance due to self-control exertion.\ud \ud Method: Following familiarization, fifteen trained male cyclists completed four simulated 10 km cycling time-trials on a cycle ergometer. Prior to each time-trial, participants completed a congruent Stroop task, or an incongruent Stroop task, to manipulate self-control. They also received either a caffeine (containing 40 mg of dissolved caffeine) or placebo mouth-rinse prior to, and every 2 km during, the cycling time-trial. The participants’ performance time, subjective measures (perceived pain, motivation, task importance, and RPE), heart rate, and blood lactate concentration were recorded throughout the time-trials. Data were analysed using three-way (self-control*caffeine*split time) repeated measures ANOVA.\ud \ud Results: There was no effect of self-control or caffeine on overall 10 km performance time (all p > 0.05). However, following self-control exertion, split time was significantly slower at 3 km (p = 0.031) and 5 km (p = 0.034), and tended to be slower at 1 km (p = 0.088) and 7 km (p = 0.078). There was no effect of the caffeine mouth rinse, nor did this interact with self-control, to affect split times (all p > 0.05). Prior self-control exertion and a caffeine mouth rinse did not influence perceptions of pain, motivation, and task importance in well-trained individuals (all p > 0.05). \ud \ud Conclusions: Findings suggest that prior self-control exertion affects self-regulatory pacing strategies during the first 7 km of a 10 km cycling time-trial, in well-trained individuals. However, caffeine mouth rinsing does not attenuate the effects of self-control exertion on subsequent endurance performance.

This study investigated effects of regrouping and oral meloxicam and chromium administration on growth performance, blood cortisol concentrations, and behaviors in dairy calves. Fifty Holstein calves (average age 196 ± 24.7 days, average body weight 198kg ± 32.7 kg) were equally divided into five groups: no regrouping with lactose monohydrate administration (NL), regrouping with lactose monohydrate administration (GL), regrouping with Cr administration (GC), regrouping with meloxicam administration (GM), and regrouping with both meloxicam and Cr administration (GMC). Blood was collected before regrouping and at 3h, 9h, 24h, 1w, and 2w after regrouping. Behaviors have been monitored from d1 to d7. Regrouping did not affect average daily gain (ADG), and the administrations of both meloxicam and chromium increased (P < 0.02) ADG compared to NL group during 2 weeks. Regrouping increased (P < 0.05) plasma cortisol concentrations in GL group, and both meloxicam and chromium and its combination treatments decreased cortisol concentrations compared to GL group at 24h, but not at other times. Regrouping increased (P < 0.05) fight, duration of eating time, head bunt, drinking time, and standing time behaviors in GL group at d1, d2, d2, d3, and d4 respectively. Regrouping also increased (P < 0.05) displacement at eating place in GL group from d3 to d6, but this effect was not significant (P < 0.05) at d7. In conclusion, regrouping caused elevation of plasma cortisol concentrations and abnormal behaviors. Meloxicam, chromium, and/or its combined administrations improved growth performance and reduced circulating cortisol concentrations in regrouped dairy calves, suggesting a feasible strategy to alleviate regrouping stress.

However, the technological challenges associated with the fabrication of plasmonic clusters with programmed geometry and composition remain unresolved. Here, we present a freeform fabrication of hierarchical plasmonic clusters (HPCs) based on omnidirectional guiding of evaporative self-assembly of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with the aid of 3D printing. Our method offers a facile, universal route to shape the multiscale features of HPCs in three-dimensions, leading to versatile manipulation of both far-field and near-field characteristics. Various functional nanomaterials can be effectively coupled to plasmonic modes of the HPCs by simply mixing with AuNP ink. We demonstrate in particular an ultracompact surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) platform to detect M13 viruses and their mutations from femtolitre volume, sub-100pM analytes. This SERS microplatform could pave the way towards simple, innovative detection methods of diverse pathogens, which is in high demand for handling pandemic situations. We expect our method to freely design and realize nanophotonic structures beyond the restrictions of traditional fabrication processes. Plasmonic nanoparticle clusters have attracted great attention due to the unique capability to manipulate electromagnetic fields at the sub-wavelength scale1–5. Ensembles of metallic nanoparticles generate various electromagnetisms at optical frequencies such as artificial magnetism6–10 and Fano-like interference11–13 and a strong field localization in the structure14–16. These unique properties are geometry-dependent and lead to a broad range of applications in sensing16,17, surface-enhanced spectroscopies18–22, nonlinear integrated photonics23,24, and light harvesting25,26. Traditionally, plasmonic clusters with tailored size and geometry are fabricated on substrates by top-down processes such as electron-beam lithography4,5 or focused-ion beam milling27,28. These approaches suffer from low throughput and are generally limited to in-plane fabrication. Alternatively, the self-assembly of colloids has been proposed as a versatile, high-throughput, and cost-effective route. A number of clever methods based on chemical linking (e.g., DNA origami)29–30 and/or convective assembly on lithographically structured templates25,26,31 have been devised to construct 2D or 3D plasmonic clusters. The shape formation, however, is mostly constrained by the thermodynamic impetus and/or template geometry. A significant challenge would be overcome these restrictions and expand structural design freedom in the fabrication of plasmonic cluster architectures with symmetry-breaking geometries. In this work, we develop a freeform, programmable 3D assembly of of hierarchical plasmonic clusters (HPCs). By exploiting micronozzle 3D printing, we demonstrate highly localized, omnidirectional meniscus-guided assembly of metallic nanoparticles, constructing a freestanding HPC with a tailored geometry that can control the far-field character. Our approach also allows versatile manipulation and exploitation of the near-field interaction in the HPC by a facile heterogeneous nanoparticle mixing. We demonstrate that 3D-printed HPCs can be utilized as an ultracompact surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) platform to detect M13 viruses and their mutations from femtolitre volume, sub-100pM analytes.

Objective To evaluate the effects and utility of tiletamine–zolazepam–medetomidine (TZM) and ketamine–medetomidine (KM) for anesthesia of Amur leopard cats (Prionailurus bengalensis euptailurus). Study design Prospective, randomized experimental trial. Animals A total of six female (3.70 ± 0.49 kg) and six male (5.03 ± 0.44 kg; mean ± standard deviation) Amur leopard cats aged 2–6 years. Methods Each animal was administered four protocols separated by ≥3 weeks. Each protocol included medetomidine (0.05 mg kg–1) combined with tiletamine–zolazepam (1 mg kg–1; protocol MTZLO); tiletamine–zolazepam (2 mg kg–1; protocol MTZHI); ketamine (2 mg kg–1; protocol MKLO); or ketamine (4 mg kg–1; MKHI) administered intramuscularly. At time 0 (onset of lateral recumbency) and 30 minutes, heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (fR), rectal temperature, noninvasive mean arterial pressure (MAP) and hemoglobin oxygen saturation (SpO2) were recorded. Times to onset of lateral recumbency, duration of anesthesia and time to standing were recorded. Results Overall, animals were anesthetized with all protocols within 10 minutes, anesthesia was maintained ≥57 minutes, and recovery (time from the first head lift to standing) was completed within 5 minutes. During anesthesia with all protocols, HR, fR, rectal temperature, SpO2 and MAP were 99–125 beats minute–1, 33–44 breaths minute–1, 37.6–39.4 °C, 90–95% and 152–177 mmHg, respectively. No adverse event was observed. Conclusions and clinical relevance TZM and KM at various dosages resulted in rapid onset of anesthesia, duration of >57 minutes and rapid recovery without administration of an antagonist. Accordingly, all these combinations are useful for anesthetizing Amur leopard cats and for performing simple procedures. However, the low doses of the anesthetic agents are recommended because there was no difference in duration of anesthesia between the dose rates studied.

An highly efficient plasmonic/photonic devices requires precise nanoscale structural control which becomes critically essential for variety of application requirements. Advancements in lithography and deposition methods provided precise sub-nm structure with complex processing steps at high cost. Self-ssembly technique involving M13 bacteriophage (phage) provides us an alternative option with easy fabrication, high selectivity/sensitivity, and altogether with low-cost methodology. With such merits, we demonstrate two kinds of applications: A highly efficient dynamic actuator and dynamic plasmonic device. From our phage-based device it is possible to precisely control thickness in 0.2 nm step or in a broader range resulting in realization of highly efficient dynamic actuator device. Thickness modification is cross-checked using localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) measurements. On the other-side, variety of interesting complex plasmonic characteristics are extensively studied and an efficient plasmonic device is realized with precise sub-nm dynamic phage thickness modification. Critically, problems involving plasmonic devices which are extremely sensitive to sub-nm scale changes (≤ 1nm) can be solved utilizing dynamic M13 phage property. To strengthen dynamic plasmonic device characteristics, we introduce the metal-coated M13 phage-based nanostructures based on a simple and straight-forward drop-casting technique. Nanowires and island/NP structures are formed with precise control and reproducibilty. Nanowires with diameter range of ~ 6.6 nm – 150 nm and islands with diameter range of ~ 100 nm – 1200 nm are fabricated. By varying the humidity, highly efficient plasmonic characteristics are realized with the help of LSPR experiments. Our home-made built-in humidity chamber equipped with atomic force microscopy measurements revealed the sub-nm thickness variation of M13 phage, which agreed well with LSPR and optical simulation results. We hope our approach utilizing M13 bacteriophage as a supporting platform will open attractive applications in field of plasmonic devices, understanding complex plasmonic modes, sensors, actuators, energy devices and few other to name.

The Amur leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis euptilurus) is a globally endangered species, and there is thus an urgent need to increase its population. The objectives of this study were to: (1) confirm the utility of urethral catheterization (UC) for semen collection from Amur leopard cats; (2) investigate proper dilution media for fresh semen; and (3) investigate the effectiveness of sperm cryopreservation, including examining the effect of glycerol concentration. Six adult males in captivity (mean weight 5.03 ± 0.44 kg, aged 2–6 years) were included. All study procedures were performed during the breeding season (February to April) over two consecutive years. Semen samples (n = 28) were collected four or five times from each animal (four times for two animals and five times for four animals) by UC under general anaesthesia, and their characteristics (including sperm motility) were evaluated. First, the sperm motility in semen diluted in Ham's F-10 or phosphate buffer saline (PBS) was compared. Next, semen diluted with TEST-yolk buffer containing 2%, 4%, or 6% glycerol was frozen in a liquid nitrogen tank, and sperm motility and acrosome integrity were evaluated after thawing. No difference in motility was observed between sperm diluted in Ham's F-10 and PBS. The percentages of sperm motility and kinetic values in semen frozen in 2% or 4% glycerol were higher than those in semen stored in 6% glycerol. In conclusion, the UC method for semen collection is recommendable for Amur leopard cats and should be useful for artificial insemination. Although sperm motility decreased after thawing, samples thus preserved may be usable for advanced reproductive techniques, such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection or in-vitro fertilization.

Intramuscular fat (IMF) content in skeletal muscle including the longissimus dorsi muscle (LM), also known as marbling fat, is one of the most important factors determining beef quality in several countries including Korea, Japan, Australia, and the United States. Genetics and breed, management, and nutrition affect IMF deposition. Japanese Black cattle breed has the highest IMF content in the world, and Korean cattle (also called Hanwoo) the second highest. Here, we review results of research on genetic factors (breed and sex differences and heritability) that affect IMF deposition. Cattle management factors are also important for IMF deposition. Castration of bulls increases IMF deposition in most cattle breeds. The effects of several management factors, including weaning age, castration, slaughter weight and age, and environmental conditions on IMF deposition are also reviewed. Nutritional factors, including fat metabolism, digestion and absorption of feed, glucose/starch availability, and vitamin A, D, and C levels are important for IMF deposition. Manipulating IMF deposition through developmental programming via metabolic imprinting is a recently proposed nutritional method to change potential IMF deposition during the fetal and neonatal periods in rodents and domestic animals. Application of fetal nutritional programming to increase IMF deposition of progeny in later life is reviewed. The coordination of several factors affects IMF deposition. Thus, a combination of several strategies may be needed to manipulate IMF deposition, depending on the consumer’s beef preference. In particular, stage-specific feeding programs with concentrate-based diets developed by Japan and Korea are described in this article.

Polycarbosilane (PCS)/polysilazane (PSZ) preceramic mixtures with weight ratios of 100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75, and 0/100 were used as a filler for the joining of SiC f /SiC to obtain high purity SiC at the joining region. SiC f /SiC was fabricated by the electrophoretic infiltration of a SiC-based matrix phase into Tyranno SA3 SiC fabrics followed by hot-pressing at 1750 °C under 20 MPa for 2 h in an Ar atmosphere. Microstructural analysis confirmed a sound join without cracks after joining at 1750 °C for 2 h under a pressure of 10 MPa. SiC was the only phase remaining at the joint when PCS was used, while a small amount of Si 3 N 4 along with the main SiC were observed in the join using PSZ. The flexural strengths of the butt-joint SiC f /SiC were 120 and 137 MPa for the samples joined using a pure PCS and PSZ at 1750 °C, respectively, whereas those joined using the mixture fillers showed relatively lower strength.

The use of industrial waste [mill scale (MS), red mud (RM), Al-dross (AD)] as fluxing agents in the sulfurization of Fe-Ni-Cu-Co alloy to matte (Fe-Ni-Cu-Co-S) by carbothermic reduction of CaSO4 was investigated at 1673 K (1400 °C). The sulfurization efficiency (SE) was 76 (± 2) pct at RM or AD single fluxing. However, SE drastically increased to approximately 89 pct at a ‘5AD + 5MS’ combination, which was equivalent to reagent-grade chemical ‘5Al2O3 + 5Fe2O3’ fluxing (SE = 88 pct). The present results can be used to improve the cost-effective recovery of rare metals (Ni and Co) from deep sea manganese nodules.
