A number of substituted amidines of 3-indoleacetic acid have been synthesized, in which the carboxy-containing residues of D, L-α-amino acids have been used as N-substituents, plus their ethyl esters. 2. The cyclization of some of the compounds prepared to 2-(3′-mdolylmethyl)-4-isobutyl-5-imidazolone and 2,4-di(3′-indolylmethyl)-5-imidazolone has been effected.

The reaction of the imino ester of indolyl-3-carboxylic acid withα-amino acids, leading to the formation of amidines, substituted by carboxyl-containing residues of the corresponding amino acids, was investigated. 2. A series of 2-(indolyl-3')-4-R-imldazolones-5 was produced, where R represents alkyl residues of amino acids — valine, leucine, isoleucine, alanine, methionine, and proline. The structure of the indicated products was demonstrated by counter synthesis from the N-formylindolecarbimino ester and by the IR spectra.

The reaction of minerals of boron to neutron radiation; is such that neutron logging of boreholes provides a geophysical tool with which to seek their ores.. It is based on the reaction of the isotope of boron B1O with a thermal neutron: B10 + n9 → Li7 + α. A sonde designed specifically for the purpose has been tested. Until they are generally available, another type can easily he modified for neutron logging of boron. Different procedures and interpretation permit initial identification, preliminary assay, and estimates of reserves. —M. Russell

The conditions for preparing certainβ-dialkylaminoethyl(2-pyridyl)sulfides and their quaternary salts are investigated.

1. A one-step method is proposed for the preparation of acetylated 2-(indolyl-3′-)-4-R-imidazolones and unacetylated 2-(indolyl-3′-)-6-keto, 3,4-dihydropyrimidines by treating the corresponding amidino-acids with acetic anhydride. The structure of these compounds was proved by an independent synthesis. 2. Because of their ability to form salts and in accordance with their IR spectra the acetylated imidazolones were considered to be O-acetylated derivatives.

The alkylation of 2-amino-4-methyl-6-oxopyrimidine and 2-amino-6-chloro-4-methylpyrimidine with acrylonitrile in an aqueous alkaline medium takes place at the ring nitrogen with the formation of 2-amino-1-(β-carboxyethyl)-4-methyl-6-oxopyrimidine (I). A number of esters of compound I have been obtained in the form of hydrochlorides.

From uracil- and 4-methyluracil-5-sulfonyl chlorides, nine previously unknown 5-pyrimidinesulfonamides have been synthesized.
