Artemisia argyi and Artemisia indica are edible medicinal plants belonging to the genus Artemisia in the Asteraceae. There are many similarities in their morphology, traditional curative effect, and modern pharmacological treatment. In this study, we built distribution maps of A. argyi and A. indica in China and a phylogenetic tree of common medicinal plants in Asteraceae. Then, we verified the chemical composition changes of A. argyi and A. indica via their metabolome. Traditional efficacy and modern pharmacological action were verified by network pharmacology and in vitro using RAW264.7 cells. The results showed that A. argyi and A. indica are widely distributed in China, and they shared pharmaphylogeny, which provides theoretical support for the mixed use of A. argyi and A. indica in most regions of China. Furthermore, there were both similarities and differences in volatile oil and flavonoid composition between A. argyi and A. indica. The network pharmacology results showed that A. argyi and A. indica had 23 common active compounds and that both had pharmacological effects on chronic gastritis (CG). Molecular docking analyses showed that quercetin, luteolin, and kaempferol have strong binding affinities with the target proteins JUN, TP53, AKT1, MAPK3, TNF, MAPK, and IL6. The cell experiment results further demonstrated that A. argyi and A. indica treat CG via the NOD-like receptor pathway. Based on the theory of pharmaphylogeny, this study explored the pharmaphylogeny between A. argyi and A. indica from various perspectives to provide a basis for the substitution of A. argyi and A. indica.

Background/aim The aim of the present study was to investigate the vascular normalization effect of traditional Chinese medicine Astragalus membranaceus (AM) and Curcuma wenyujin (CW) on tumor-derived endothelial cells (TECs). Materials and methods TECs were isolated from the xenografted HCC cell line HepG2 expressing red fluorescent protein (RFP). The effect of AM and CW on TECs proliferation was measured using the CCK8 assay. The vascular normalization potential of AM and CW was assessed using a tube formation assay. Immunocytochemistry was performed to assess the effect of AM and CW on the expression of angiogenic maker CD34 and hypoxia-inducible factor HIF1a. Results The isolated TECs and endothelioma (EOMA) cells did not differ with regard to the expression levels of endothelial markers CD34, VEGFR-1, VEGFR-2, PDGFR-α and PDGFR-β. All AM, CW, AM+CW and Nintedanib (Nin) showed a dose-dependent increasing inhibition effect on either TECs or EOMA cells. AM, CW and AM+CW significantly reduced HIF1a expression, increased CD34 expression and enhanced endothelial network formation in TECs or EOMA cells compared to the control. Conclusion AM and CW promoted vascular normalization in tumor-derived endothelial cells of HCC, through increased expression of CD34 and reduced expression of HIF1a.

Glycocholic acid (GCA) is an important identified biomarker for various hepatobiliary diseases. However, results obtained from routine clinical measurement significantly varied due to the interference from the extremely similar structure analogues, which cause confusion to clinical diagnosis. In this study, a bracketing calibration-based isotope dilution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (ID-LC-MS/MS) method was developed. The established method exhibited good performance criteria through the adoption of isotope dilution, calibrator bracketing, and gravimetric measurements. The satisfactory precision (0.16%–2.01%) and good recoveries were achieved at five spiked levels (98.0–100.9%). The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 0.01 ng/mL and 0.05 ng/mL, respectively. No interference, matrix effect, and carryover were observed. The sample preparation process was easier to operate, without further solvent evaporation and time-saving. The optimized method was successfully applied to quantify GCA with a wide range of concentrations in clinical human serum samples and also compared with clinical routine systems.

Background Reference intervals are important for interpretation of clinical laboratory tests. The platelet (PLT) indices such as the mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) are newer hematological parameters, which have been recently reported as clinically valuable biomarkers. However, there are not many studies that have estimated the reference intervals for these parameters in healthy Chinese Han adults. Objective The objectives of this study were to establish reference values of PLT indices [including PLT count, MPV, PDW, platelet-large cell ratio (P-LCR), and plateletcrit (Pct)] for healthy Chinese Han adults. We also aimed to determine the region-based differences of PLT indices in China. Methods A total of 4,642 volunteers with a mean age of 43 were recruited from six regions of China. PLT indices were performed on Sysmex XE-2100 hematology analyzers, whose traceability was well verified. Results There were significant region-based differences for all PLT indices. Reference people in Chengdu had the lowest mean PLT count and Pct, but the highest MPV, PDW, and P-LCR among the six regions. Therefore, we derived the reference intervals in Chinese Han population excluding Chengdu reference people for PLT indices as PLT count: (127–341) × 109/l; MPV: (9.20–13.30) fl; PDW: 9.90–19.00%; P-LCR: 18.10–52.00%; Pct: 16.00–41.00%. Conclusions Region-specific reference intervals are essential as there were statistically significant region-related differences in the PLT parameters. The reference intervals established in this study differed from the existing reference values. Chengdu region may need proper specific reference ranges, which apply to their people, for all PLT parameters.

Serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) plays a critical role in the diagnosis of various diseases, and the establishment of relevant, reliable reference intervals (RI) is key to avoiding misdiagnoses. In 2011, IFCC published the new reference measurement procedure (RMP) for the determination of serum ALP in which one of the main modifications was the measuring temperature of the assay. Here, the new RMP was used to help establish RIs for serum ALP concentrations in healthy Chinese Han.Volunteer individuals in Guangdong province, China (n=1622) were screened by questionnaire and laboratory testing for eligibility as a reference. Blood (20 mL) was collected and samples were measured by the Roche Modular system using the new RMP for the serum ALP compatible method. Partitioning of values by gender and/or age was evaluated with a standard normal deviate test after removing outliers. A simple non-parametric method for a two-sided 95% distribution of reference values was calculated.Serum ALP concentrations were obtained from the cohort of eligible reference individuals (n=658). The RI for serum ALP in males age 18–79 years was 48–131 U/L. Females were partitioned into two age groups based on statistical analysis, 18–49 years and 50–79 years, and the RIs derived were 40–106 U/L and 57–159 U/L, respectively.RIs for serum ALP for Chinese Han individuals in between the ages of 18 and 79 years were determined and required partitioning due to the higher ALP values of females age 50–79 years.
