This final report is the third and final deliverable of Work Package 3. It builds on the first report D3.1, in which the outcomes of the initial ARIADNE project as well as the PARTHENOS project, which were used as starting points for the current ARIADNEplus project, were taken into account [Hollander 2020]. It also builds on the second, interim report D3.2, in which the activities of the partners to support the creation of FAIR data in the archaeological sector were described [Hollander 2022]. This current report summarises the activities carried out by the different partners during the four-year project duration (January 2019 – December 2022), as well as the results achieved through the work package. The following partners have been involved: DANS-KNAW, PIN, UoY-ADS, CNR, CONICET, BUP, NIAM-BAS, AMZ, ARUP, AU, UH, CNRS, INRAP, RGK, ATHENA-RC, PP, HNM, FI, IAA, MIBACT-ICCU, NARA, DGCP, SND, and ASU. The objectives of Work Package 3 “Policies and Good Practices for FAIR Data Management” are to: Support the creation of FAIR data in the archaeological sector. Define and spread guidelines to good practices in archaeological data management. Adapt standard quality criteria for datasets and data to the archaeological case, and support their implementation among users. Chapter 2 describes how to define and disseminate guidelines on good practices in archaeological data management. Commonly developed and widely applicable guides ensure that archaeological data will be FAIR and available in the long-term. Chapter 3 presents an overview of the activities to develop and implement a portfolio of tools to support users in their work with archaeological data. The ARIADNEplus partners developed and implemented a new Horizon Europe Data Management Plan Template for Archaeological Datasets, a Protocol for Archaeological Data Management, and a Guide for Archaeological Data Management Planning, accessible through the new ARIADNEplus DMP tool.1 The Policy Wizard Tool was updated. Chapter 4 shows the importance of sharing experiences from partners with already certified repositories to partners willing to set up an archaeological data repository. Providing guidelines and support on repository creation and management was the focus of activity here. Workshops, webinars, symposia and hackathons took place and scientific articles on data management policies and practices of digital archaeological repositories were published. Chapter 5 describes what partners willing to certify their repository need to be provided with: the explanation of and training on accreditation requirements when applied to repositories of archaeological data with a perspective on international initiatives, e.g. access restrictions for security and privacy reasons. Achieving a Trustworthy Digital Repository status, and making and keeping data FAIR is a joint journey. Chapter 6 highlights the application of the FAIR principles to archaeological data, taking into account different regulations throughout Europe and the potential sensitivities and IPR-related issues. The aim is to work towards solutions that harmonise the diverse approaches adopted. A major step forward has been an online survey conducted among repositories, with 60 respondents, giving essential insights into current policies and where there is room for improvement. This article presents the results of a survey of data management policies and practices of digital archaeological repositories in Europe and beyond. The survey was carried out in 2021 under the auspices of the European project ARIADNEplus and the COST Action SEADDA. Its main purpose was to collect and analyse information about current policies that determine access to and reuse of data held by digital archaeological repositories, and to investigate the guidance and support needed to make these repositories and data FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable). These policies comprise the regulations of heritage and research authorities/agencies, councils and other institutions at different levels (European, national/regional, local) as well as the repository rules governing deposition, access to, and reuse of archaeological data. The repositories are operated both by heritage sector institutions and by the research and higher education sector. The survey represents a bottom-up approach by focusing on the actual policies and practices of digital archaeological repositories, which may reflect higher level regulations. A reality check in this regard can enable heritage and research authorities, councils and other institutions to reinforce or put in place regulations that bring current repository policies and practices closer to the ideal of providing FAIR and open access data. The survey results show that there is room for improvement in this regard and some suggestions are made here for future initiatives.

The overall objective of ARIADNEplus is to serve archaeological researchers and data management communities byimprovingdata sharing and the (re)use of data resources, which are dispersed through Europe and often difficult to discover and access as different silos (institutional, national or disciplinary) still exist. This reportdescribes the activities carried out by the different partners during the first twoand a half years of the ARIADNEplus project, as well as the results achieved through the work package. These activities include: defining and disseminating of guides toensure that archaeological data will be FAIR and available in the long-term; the implementation of a portfolio of toolsto support users such as theARIADNEplus DMP Researcher Template for Archaeological Datasets with a Domain Data Protocol based on the Science Europe core requirements for Research Data Management;sharing experiences from partners with already certified repositories withpartners willing to set up an archaeological data repository and providing guidelines and support on repository creation and management; the requirements for repository certification; the application of the FAIR principles to archaeological data, taking into account different regulations throughout Europe and the potential sensitivities and IPR-related issues; training onFAIR Data Management.

Digital archaeology in the Netherlands is connected with investments in a new large-scale and innovative Dutch research infrastructure for the next 10 years. Priorities are set to combine forces at a national level in order to contribute to the international position of the Netherlands as a 'knowledge country'. Researchers need to coordinate and collaborate even more to set up a FAIR enabling data infrastructure with limited resources. Regarding the archaeological discipline, the use of formal quality standards and legislation that certifies archaeological organisations to carry out archaeological work improves national collaboration and stimulates the digital workflow. DANS is the dedicated national repository for archaeology in the Netherlands and is launching the Data Station Archaeology, a repository meeting the latest technological standards. Finding and sharing data of high quality facilitates knowledge of archaeological discoveries; a flourishing open access trend in Dutch archaeology stimulates a strong growth in the use of data. To keep up with innovative developments, a growing community of archaeologists and other specialists are working together in international projects to secure the future of European Archaeology.

Het KNAW/NWO-instituut is sinds 2006 een belangrijke speler binnen de Nederlandse en wereldwijde onderzoeksgemeenschap. De komende periode gaat DANS domeingerichte Data Stations aanbieden, diensten die zijn toegesneden op de behoeften binnen wetenschappelijke disciplines. Daarmee wordt DANS naast een archief voor datasets uit voltooide onderzoeksprojecten, ook een omgeving waarin onderzoekers datasets kunnen vormen, bewerken, analyseren en delen.

Since the first ESFRI roadmap in 2006, multiple humanities Research Infrastructures (RIs) have been set up all over the European continent, supporting archaeologists (ARIADNE), linguists (CLARIN-ERIC), Holocaust researchers (EHRI), cultural heritage specialists (IPERION-CH) and others. These examples only scratch the surface of the breadth of research communities that have benefited from close cooperation in the European Research Area. While each field developed discipline-specific services over the years, common themes can also be distinguished. All humanities RIs address, in varying degrees, questions around research data management, the use of standards and the desired interoperability of data across disciplinary boundaries. This article sheds light on how cluster project PARTHENOS developed pooled services and shared solutions for its audience of humanities researchers, RI managers and policymakers. In a time where the convergence of existing infrastructure is becoming ever more important - with the construction of a European Open Science Cloud as an audacious, ultimate goal - we hope that our experiences inform future work and provide inspiration on how to exploit synergies in interdisciplinary, transnational, scientific cooperation.

A comprehensive set ofPARTHENOS Guidelines to FAIRify data management and make data reusableis focusing on the topic of common policies. This compact guide offers twenty guidelines to align the efforts of data producers, data archivists and data users in humanities and social sciences to make research data as reusable as possible based upon the FAIR Principles. Each guideline has recommendations for both researchers and archives as it is recognised that different priorities may apply to each case. The guidelines result from the work of over fifty PARTHENOS project members. They were responsible for investigating commonalities in the implementation of policies and strategies for research data management and used results from desk research, questionnaires and interviews with selected experts to gather around one hundred current data management policies (including guides for preferred formats, data review policies and best practices, both formal as well as tacit). The participants in the CARARE project has established a strong community over the three years of working together, building up a close network of pan-European colleagues and friends both socially and professionally. CARARE has brought together a range of cultural heritage organisations whose main interest is archaeology and who have varying roles and experience in digitisation and metadata. This has proved to be invaluable, especially to some of the smaller organisations, who have been able to learn and adopt best practice within their own organisations and to promote these to fellow national institutions in the same field. The CARARE metadata schema is considered to be very good and highly fit for purpose and has been adopted by several of the partners as the in-house de facto standard, facilitating the supply of new content to Europeana as well as encouraging the digitisation of more resources along with the creation of metadata.

This book is a collection of seventeen papers which describe the impact that the ARIADNE project and its successor, ARIADNEplus (2019-2022) have had on the archaeological community, both in Europe and further afield. Each case study has been contributed by organisations involved in the ARIADNE Infrastructure who cover many countries from across Europe as well as Argentina and Japan. These papers were originally presented at the CAA Conference in Krakow, April 2019 and cover aspects such as data management, application of standards and guidelines, the use of CIDOC-CRM and Open Data to name but a few., Printed copies may be requested from Archaeolingua.

During the second year of the CARARE Project, Work package 6 specifies that a CARARE Workshop would be organised by NTUA to be held at an international conference. The European Conference on Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries (ECDL) was the suggested event, being held in Berlin in late September. NTUA duly submitted a proposal entitled “Achieving Semantic Interoperability in European Digital Libraries” which focussed upon Europeana, the metadata schemas and digital libraries and which was to be jointly sponsored by CARARE and EU Screen, another Europeana content ingestion project. However, the proposal was unsuccessful and an alternative event had to be selected. (Europeana did not feature in any of the selected workshops and the nearest in subject matter was on semantic archives and digital curation). Fortunately, Erfgoed Nederland (a CARARE participant) organise a bi-annual conference “Digital Strategies for Heritage” which was to take place in December and as such, CARARE partners were invited to submit a proposal for a workshop. This resulted in one workshop proposal from the Swedish Heritage Board in conjunction with the Cyprus Institute plus two presentations from KNAWS-DAN and N303 providing very good coverage for the CARARE project. The presentations and workshop are described in further detail in the following sections and this report concludes with the planned international workshops for the final year of the CARARE project.
