Search

The short answer is $\textit{probably no}$. Specifically, this paper considers a recent body of work which suggests that general relativity requires neither the support of dark matter halos, nor unconventional baryonic profiles, nor any infrared modification, to be consistent after all with the anomalously rapid orbits observed in many galactic discs. In particular, the gravitoelectric flux is alleged to collapse nonlinearly into regions of enhanced force, in an analogue of the colour-confining chromoelectric flux tube model which has yet to be captured by conventional post-Newtonian methods. However, we show that the scalar gravity model underpinning this proposal is wholly inconsistent with the nonlinear Einstein equations, which themselves appear to prohibit the linear confinement-type potentials which could indicate a disordered gravitational phase. Our findings challenge the fidelity of the previous Euclidean lattice analyses. We confirm by direct calculation using a number of perturbation schemes and gauges that the next-to-leading order gravitoelectric correction to the rotation curve of a reasonable baryonic profile would be imperceptible. The `gravitoelectric flux collapse' programme was also supported by using intragalactic lensing near a specific galactic baryon profile as a field strength heuristic. We recalculate this lensing effect, and conclude that it has been overstated by three orders of magnitude. As a by-product, our analysis suggests fresh approaches to (i) the fluid ball conjecture and (ii) gravitational energy localisation, both to be pursued in future work. In summary, whilst it may be interesting to consider the possibility of confinement-type effects in gravity, we may at least conclude here that confinement-type effects $\textit{cannot play any significant part}$ in explaining flat or rising galactic rotation curves without dark matter halos., Comment: 33 pages, 19 figures

We investigate recent claims that gravitomagnetic effects in linearised general relativity can explain flat and rising rotation curves, such as those observed in galaxies, without the need for dark matter. If one models a galaxy as an axisymmetric, stationary, rotating, non-relativistic and pressureless 'dust' of stars in the gravitoelectromagnetic (GEM) formalism, we show that GEM effects on the circular velocity $v$ of a star are $O(10^{-6})$ smaller than the standard Newtonian (gravitoelectric) effects. Moreover, we find that gravitomagnetic effects are $O(10^{-6})$ too small to provide the vertical support necessary to maintain the dynamical equilibrium assumed. These issues are obscured if one constructs a single equation for $v$, as considered previously. We nevertheless solve this equation for a galaxy having a Miyamoto--Nagai density profile. We show that for the values of the mass, $M$, and semi-major and semi-minor axes, $a$ and $b$, typical for a dwarf galaxy, the rotation curve depends only very weakly on $M$. Moreover, for aspect ratios $a/b > 2$, the rotation curves are concave over their entire range, which does not match observations in any galaxy. Most importantly, we show that for the poloidal gravitomagnetic flux $\psi$ to provide the necessary vertical support, it must become singular at the origin. This originates from the unwitting, but forbidden, inclusion of free-space solutions of the Poisson-like equation that determines $\psi$, hence ruling out the methodology as a means of explaining flat galaxy rotation curves. We further show that recent deliberate attempts to leverage such free-space solutions against the rotation curve problem yield no deterministic modification outside the thin disk approximation, and that, in any case, the homogeneous contributions to $\psi$ are ruled out by the boundary value problem posed by any physical axisymmetric galaxy., Comment: Minor textual changes

The ten-parameter, quadratic Poincar�� gauge theory of gravity is a plausible alternative to general relativity. We show that the rich background cosmology of the gauge theory is described by a non-canonical bi-scalar-tensor theory in the Jordan frame: the `metrical analogue'. This provides a unified framework for future investigation by the broader community. For many parameter choices, the non-canonical term reduces to a Cuscuton field of the form $\smash{\sqrt{|X^{����}|}}$. The Einstein-Cartan-Kibble-Sciama theory maps to a pure quadratic Cuscuton, whereas the teleparallel theory maps to the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian. We apply the metrical analogue to novel unitary and power-counting-renormalisable cases of Poincar�� gauge theory. These theories support the concordance $��$CDM background cosmology up to an optional, effective dark radiation component, we explain this behaviour in terms of a stalled Cuscuton. We also obtain two dark energy solutions from one of these cases: accelerated expansion from a negative bare cosmological constant whose magnitude is screened, and emergent dark energy to replace vanishing bare cosmological constant in $��$CDM., 11 pages, 2 figures. We demonstrate the effectiveness of a novel scheme for numerically solving linear differential equations whose solutions exhibit extreme oscillation. We take a standard Runge-Kutta approach, but replace the Taylor expansion formula with a Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin method. The method is demonstrated by application to the Airy equation, along with a more complicated burst-oscillation case. We present a comparison of two methods for cosmological parameter inference from supernovae Ia lightcurves fitted with the SALT2 technique. The standard chi-square methodology and the recently proposed Bayesian hierarchical method (BHM) are each applied to identical sets of simulations based on the 3-year data release from the Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS3), and also data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the Low Redshift sample and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), assuming a concordance LCDM cosmology. For both methods, we find that the recovered values of the cosmological parameters, and the global nuisance parameters controlling the stretch and colour corrections to the supernovae lightcurves, suffer from small biasses. The magnitude of the biasses is similar in both cases, with the BHM yielding slightly more accurate results, in particular for cosmological parameters when applied to just the SNLS3 single survey data sets. Most notably, in this case, the biasses in the recovered matter density $\Omega_{\rm m,0}$ are in opposite directions for the two methods. For any given realisation of the SNLS3-type data, this can result in a $\sim 2 \sigma$ discrepancy in the estimated value of $\Omega_{\rm m,0}$ between the two methods, which we find to be the case for real SNLS3 data. As more higher and lower redshift SNIa samples are included, however, the cosmological parameter estimates of the two methods converge., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Following on our previous study of an analytic parametric model to describe the baryonic and dark matter distributions in clusters of galaxies with spherical symmetry, we perform an SZ analysis of a set of simulated clusters and present their mass and pressure profiles. The simulated clusters span a wide range in mass, 2.0 x 10^14 Msun < M200 < 1.0 x 10^15Msun, and observations with the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI) are simulated through their Sunyaev- Zel'dovich (SZ) effect. We assume that the dark matter density follows a Navarro, Frenk and White (NFW) profile and that the gas pressure is described by a generalised NFW (GNFW) profile. By numerically exploring the probability distributions of the cluster parameters given simulated interferometric SZ data in the context of Bayesian methods, we investigate the capability of this model and analysis technique to return the simulated clusters input quantities. We show that considering the mass and redshift dependency of the cluster halo concentration parameter is crucial in obtaining an unbiased cluster mass estimate and hence deriving the radial profiles of the enclosed total mass and the gas pressure out to r200., 5 pages, 2 tables, 3 figures

PowellSnakes (PwS) is a Bayesian algorithm for detecting compact objects embedded in a diffuse background, and was selected and successfully employed by the Planck consortium in the production of its first public deliverable: the Early Release Compact Source Catalogue (ERCSC). We present the critical foundations and main directions of further development of PwS, which extend it in terms of formal correctness and the optimal use of all the available information in a consistent unified framework, where no distinction is made between point sources (unresolved objects), Sunyaev–Zel'dovich (SZ) clusters, single- or multi-channel detection. An emphasis is placed on the necessity of a multi-frequency, multi-model detection algorithm in order to achieve optimality.

We present an analytic parametric model to describe the baryonic and dark matter distributions in clusters of galaxies with spherical symmetry. It is assumed that the dark matter density follows a Navarro, Frenk and White (NFW) profile and that the gas pressure is described by a generalised NFW (GNFW) profile. By further demanding hydrostatic equilibrium and that the gas fraction is small throughout the cluster, one obtains unique functional forms, dependent on basic cluster parameters, for the radial profiles of all the properties of interest in the cluster. We show these profiles are consistent both with numerical simulations and multi-wavelength observations of clusters. We also use our model to analyse six simulated SZ clusters as well as A611 SZ data from the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI). In each case, we derive the radial profile of the enclosed total mass and the gas pressure and show that the results are in good agreement with our model prediction., 10 pages, 3 table, 17 figures

The classifier is trained on simulated non-Gaussian CMB maps with a range of known fNL values by providing it with wavelet coefficients of the maps; we consider both the HEALPix wavelet (HW) and the spherical Mexican hat wavelet (SMHW). When applied to simulated test maps, the NN classifier produces results in very good agreement with those obtained using standard χ2 minimization. The standard deviations of the fNL estimates for Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe1 like simulations were σ= 22 and 33 for the SMHW and the HW, respectively, which are extremely close to those obtained using classical statistical methods in Curto et al. and Casaponsa et al. Weak gravitational lensing studies of galaxy clusters often assume a spherical cluster model to simplify the analysis, but some recent studies have suggested this simplifying assumption may result in large biases in estimated cluster masses and concentration values, since clusters are expected to exhibit triaxiality. Several such analyses have, however, quoted expressions for the spatial derivatives of the lensing potential in triaxial models, which are open to misinterpretation. In this paper, we give a clear description of weak lensing by triaxial NFW galaxy clusters and also present an efficient and robust method to model these clusters and obtain parameter estimates. By considering four highly triaxial NFW galaxy clusters, we re-examine the impact of simplifying spherical assumptions and found that while the concentration estimates are largely unbiased except in one of our traixial NFW simulated clusters, for which the concentration is only slightly biased, the masses are significantly biased, by up to 40%, for all the clusters we analysed. Moreover, we find that such assumptions can lead to the erroneous conclusion that some substructure is present in the galaxy clusters or, even worse, that multiple galaxy clusters are present in the field. We present results of a Bayesian analysis of radial velocity (RV) data for the star HIP 5158, confirming the presence of two companions and also constraining their orbital parameters. Assuming Keplerian orbits, the two-companion model is found to be e^{48} times more probable than the one-planet model, although the orbital parameters of the second companion are only weakly constrained. The derived orbital periods are 345.6 +/- 2.0 d and 9017.8 +/- 3180.7 d respectively, and the corresponding eccentricities are 0.54 +/- 0.04 and 0.14 +/- 0.10. The limits on planetary mass (m \sin i) and semimajor axis are (1.44 +/- 0.14 M_{J}, 0.89 +/- 0.01 AU) and (15.04 +/- 10.55 M_{J}, 7.70 +/- 1.88 AU) respectively. Owing to large uncertainty on the mass of the second companion, we are unable to determine whether it is a planet or a brown dwarf. The remaining `noise' (stellar jitter) unaccounted for by the model is 2.28 +/- 0.31 m/s. We also analysed a three-companion model, but found it to be e^{8} times less probable than the two-companion model., 5 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables. We use the method based on the spherical Mexican hat wavelet to measure the fnl parameter for three of the most interesting shapes of primordial non-Gaussianity: local, equilateral and orthogonal. Our results indicate that this parameter is compatible with a Gaussian distribution within the 2σ confidence level (CL) for the three shapes and the results are consistent with the values presented by the WMAP team. We have included in our analysis the impact on fnl due to contamination by unresolved point sources. The point sources add a positive contribution of f loc nl = 2.5 ± 3.0, f eq nl = 37 ± 18 and f ort nl = 25 ± 14. As mentioned by the WMAP team, the contribution of the point sources to the orthogonal and equilateral forms is expected to be larger than the local one and thus it cannot be neglected in future constraints on these parameters. Taking into account this contamination, our best estimates for fnl are −16.0 ≤ f loc nl ≤ 76.0, −382 ≤ f eq nl ≤ 202 and −394 ≤ f ort nl ≤ 34 at 95 per cent CL. The three shapes are compatible with zero at 95 per cent CL (2σ). Our conclusion is that the WMAP 7-year data are consistent with Gaussian primordial fluctuations within 2σ CL. We constrain the shape of the primordial power spectrum using recent measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) 7-year data and other high-resolution CMB experiments. We also include observations of the matter power spectrum from the luminous red galaxy (LRG) subset DR7 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We consider two different models of the primordial power spectrum. The first is the standard nearly scale-invariant spectrum in the form of a generalised power-law parameterised in terms of the spectral amplitude $A_{\rm s}$, the spectral index $n_{\rm s}$ and (possibly) the running parameter $n_{\rm run}$. The second spectrum is derived from the Lasenby and Doran (LD) model. The LD model is based on the restriction of the total conformal time available in a closed Universe and the predicted primordial power spectrum depends upon just two parameters. An important feature of the LD spectrum is that it naturally incorporates an exponential fall-off on large scales, which might provide a possible explanation for the lower-than-expected power observed at low multipoles in the CMB. In addition to parameter estimation, we compare both models using Bayesian model selection. We find there is a significant preference for the LD model over a simple power-law spectrum for a CMB-only dataset, and over models with an equal number of parameters for all the datasets considered., Comment: minor corrections to match accepted version to MNRAS

Stellar radial velocity (RV) measurements have proven to be a very successful method for detecting extrasolar planets. Analysing RV data to determine the parameters of the extrasolar planets is a significant statistical challenge owing to the presence of multiple planets and various degeneracies between orbital parameters. Determining the number of planets favoured by the observed data is an even more difficult task. Bayesian model selection provides a mathematically rigorous solution to this problem by calculating marginal posterior probabilities of models with different number of planets, but the use of this method in extrasolar planetary searches has been hampered by the computational cost of the evaluating Bayesian evidence. Nonetheless, Bayesian model selection has the potential to improve the interpretation of existing observational data and possibly detect yet undiscovered planets. We present a new and efficient Bayesian method for determining the number of extrasolar planets, as well as for inferring their orbital parameters, without having to calculate directly the Bayesian evidence for models containing a large number of planets. Instead, we work iteratively and at each iteration obtain a conservative lower limit on the odds ratio for the inclusion of an additional planet into the model. We apply this method to simulated data-sets containing one and two planets and successfully recover the correct number of planets and reliable constraints on the orbital parameters. We also apply our method to RV measurements of HD 37124, 47 Ursae Majoris and HD 10180. For HD 37124, we confirm that the current data strongly favour a three-planet system. We find strong evidence for the presence of a fourth planet in 47 Ursae Majoris, but its orbital period is suspiciously close to one year, casting doubt on its validity. We investigate the dynamics of a cosmological dark matter fluid in the Schr\"odinger formulation, seeking to evaluate the approach as a potential tool for theorists. We find simple wave-mechanical solutions of the equations for the cosmological homogeneous background evolution of the dark matter field, and use them to obtain a piecewise analytic solution for the evolution of a compensated spherical overdensity. We analyse this solution from a `quantum mechanical' viewpoint, and establish the correct boundary conditions satisfied by the wavefunction. Using techniques from multi-particle quantum mechanics, we establish the equations governing the evolution of multiple fluids and then solve them numerically in such a system. Our results establish the viability of the Schr\"odinger formulation as a genuine alternative to standard methods in certain contexts, and a novel way to model multiple fluids., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We employ two different statistical tests to examine whether, in the framework of the Constrained MSSM, the experimentally determined values of BR(b->s gamma) and the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, (g-2), are consistent with each other. Our tests are designed to compare the theoretical predictions of the CMSSM in data space with the actual measurements, once all of the CMSSM free parameters have been integrated out and constrained using all other available data. We investigate the value of (g-2) as obtained by using e+e- data alone (which shows a ~3sigma discrepancy with the SM prediction) and as obtained based on tau decay data (which shows a much milder, 1sigma discrepancy). We find that one of our tests returns either a statistically inconclusive result or shows weak evidence of tension between BR(b->s gamma) and the e+e- data based value of (g-2). On the other hand, our second test, which is more stringent in this application, reveals that the joint observations of BR(b->s gamma) and (g-2) from e+e- data alone are incompatible within the CMSSM at the ~2sigma level. On the other hand, for both tests we find no significant tension between BR(b->s gamma) and the value of (g-2) evaluated using tau decay data. These results are only weakly dependent on the three different priors that we employ in the analysis. We conclude that, if the discrepancy between the Standard Model and the experimental determinations of (g-2) is confirmed at the 3sigma level, this could be interpreted as strong evidence against the CMSSM., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

We present an efficient and robust approach for extracting clusters of galaxies from weak lensing survey data and measuring their properties. We use simple, physically-motivated cluster models appropriate for such sparse, noisy data, and incorporate our knowledge of the cluster mass function to optimise the detection of low-mass objects. Despite the method's non-linear nature, we are able to search at a rate of approximately half a square degree per hour on a single processor, making this technique a viable candidate for future wide-field surveys. We quantify, for two simulated data-sets, the accuracy of recovered cluster parameters, and discuss the completeness and purity of our shear-selected cluster catalogues., 12 pages, 14 figures

In performing a Bayesian analysis of astronomical data, two difficult problems often emerge. First, in estimating the parameters of some model for the data, the resulting posterior distribution may be multimodal or exhibit pronounced (curving) degeneracies, which can cause problems for traditional MCMC sampling methods. Second, in selecting between a set of competing models, calculation of the Bayesian evidence for each model is computationally expensive. The nested sampling method introduced by Skilling (2004), has greatly reduced the computational expense of calculating evidences and also produces posterior inferences as a by-product. This method has been applied successfully in cosmological applications by Mukherjee et al. (2006), but their implementation was efficient only for unimodal distributions without pronounced degeneracies. Shaw et al. (2007), recently introduced a clustered nested sampling method which is significantly more efficient in sampling from multimodal posteriors and also determines the expectation and variance of the final evidence from a single run of the algorithm, hence providing a further increase in efficiency. In this paper, we build on the work of Shaw et al. and present three new methods for sampling and evidence evaluation from distributions that may contain multiple modes and significant degeneracies; we also present an even more efficient technique for estimating the uncertainty on the evaluated evidence. These methods lead to a further substantial improvement in sampling efficiency and robustness, and are applied to toy problems to demonstrate the accuracy and economy of the evidence calculation and parameter estimation. Finally, we discuss the use of these methods in performing Bayesian object detection in astronomical datasets., 14 pages, 11 figures, submitted to MNRAS, some major additions to the previous version in response to the referee's comments

We have estimated the CMB variance from the three-year WMAP data, finding a value which is significantly lower than the one expected from Gaussian simulations using the WMAP best-fit cosmological model, at a significance level of 98.7 per cent. This result is even more prominent if we consider only the north ecliptic hemisphere (99.8 per cent). Different analyses have been performed in order to identify a possible origin for this anomaly. In particular we have studied the behaviour of single radiometers and single year data as well as the effect of residual foregrounds and 1/f noise, finding that none of these possibilities can explain the low value of the variance. We have also tested the effect of varying the cosmological parameters, finding that the estimated CMB variance tends to favour higher values of $n_s$ than the one of the WMAP best-fit model. In addition, we have also tested the consistency between the estimated CMB variance and the actual measured CMB power spectrum of the WMAP data, finding a strong discrepancy. A new construction of a directional continuous wavelet analysis on the sphere is derived herein. We adopt the harmonic scaling idea for the spherical dilation operator recently proposed by Sanz et al. but extend the analysis to a more general directional framework. Directional wavelets are a powerful extension that allow one to also probe oriented structure in the analysed function. Our spherical wavelet methodology has the advantage that all functions and operators are defined directly on the sphere. The construction of wavelets in our framework is demonstrated with an example., 7 pages, 2 figures

Using a directional spherical wavelet analysis we detect the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect, indicated by a positive correlation between the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) data, at the 3.9 sigma level. In a flat universe the detection of the ISW effect provides direct and independent evidence for dark energy. Moreover, we use our detection to constrain the dark energy density Omega_Lambda. We present a study of the effect of component separation on the recovered cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature distribution, considering Gaussian and non-Gaussian input CMB maps. First, we extract the CMB component from simulated Planck data (in small patches of the sky) using the maximum entropy method (MEM), Wiener filter (WF) and a method based on the subtraction of foreground templates plus a linear combination of frequency channels (LCFC). We then apply a wavelet-based method to study the Gaussianity of the recovered CMB and compare it with the same analysis for the input map. When the original CMB map is Gaussian (and assuming that point sources have been removed), we find that none of the methods introduce non-Gaussianity (NG) in the CMB reconstruction. On the contrary, if the input CMB map is non-Gaussian, all the studied methods produce a reconstructed CMB with lower detections of NG than the original map. This effect is mainly due to the presence of instrumental noise. In this case, MEM tends to produce slightly higher non-Gaussian detections in the reconstructed map than WF whereas the detections are lower for the LCFC. We have also studied the effect of point sources in the MEM reconstruction. If no attempt to remove point sources is performed, they clearly contaminate the CMB reconstruction, introducing spurious NG. When the brightest point sources are removed from the data using the Mexican Hat Wavelet, the Gaussian character of the CMB is preserved. However, when analysing larger regions of the sky, the variance of our estimators will be appreciably reduced and, in this case, we expect the point source residuals to introduce spurious NG in the CMB. Thus, a careful subtraction (or masking) of point source emission is crucial when studying the Gaussianity of the CMB., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures. Using a directional spherical wavelet analysis we detect the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect, indicated by a positive correlation between the first-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) data. Detections are made using both a directional extension of the spherical Mexican hat wavelet and the spherical butterfly wavelet. We examine the possibility of foreground contamination and systematics in the WMAP data and conclude that these factors are not responsible for the signal that we detect. The wavelet analysis inherently enables us to localise on the sky those regions that contribute most strongly to the correlation. On removing these localised regions the correlation that we detect is reduced in significance, as expected, but it is not eliminated, suggesting that these regions are not the sole source of correlation between the data. This finding is consistent with predictions made using the ISW effect, where one would expect weak correlations over the entire sky. In a flat universe the detection of the ISW effect provides direct and independent evidence for dark energy. We use our detection to constrain dark energy parameters by deriving a theoretical prediction for the directional wavelet covariance statistic for a given cosmological model. Comparing these predictions with the data we place constraints on the equation-of-state parameter $w$ and the vacuum energy density $\Omega_\Lambda$. We also consider the case of a pure cosmological constant, i.e. $w=-1$. For this case we rule out a zero cosmological constant at greater than the 99.9% significance level. Many of the current anomalies reported in the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) 1-year data disappear after `correcting' for the best-fit embedded Bianchi type VII_h component (Jaffe et al. 2005), albeit assuming no dark energy component. We investigate the effect of this Bianchi correction on the detections of non-Gaussianity in the WMAP data that we previously made using directional spherical wavelets (McEwen et al. 2005a). As previously discovered by Jaffe et al. (2005), the deviations from Gaussianity in the kurtosis of spherical Mexican hat wavelet coefficients are eliminated once the data is corrected for the Bianchi component. This is due to the reduction of the cold spot at Galactic coordinates (l,b)=(209^\circ,-57\circ), which Cruz et al. (2005) claim to be the source of non-Gaussianity introduced in the kurtosis. Our previous detections of non-Gaussianity observed in the skewness of spherical wavelet coefficients are not reduced by the Bianchi correction. Indeed, the most significant detection of non-Gaussianity made with the spherical real Morlet wavelet at a significant level of 98.4% remains (using a very conservative method to estimate the significance). We present coincident observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) from the Very Small Array (VSA) and Cosmic Background Imager (CBI) telescopes. The consistency of the full datasets is tested in the map plane and the Fourier plane, prior to the usual compression of CMB data into flat bandpowers. Of the three mosaics observed by each group, two are found to be in excellent agreement. In the third mosaic, there is a 2 sigma discrepancy between the correlation of the data and the level expected from Monte Carlo simulations. This is shown to be consistent with increased phase calibration errors on VSA data during summer observations. We also consider the parameter estimation method of each group. The key difference is the use of the variance window function in place of the bandpower window function, an approximation used by the VSA group. A re-evaluation of the VSA parameter estimates, using bandpower windows, shows that the two methods yield consistent results., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. Final version. We present an extension of the harmonic-space maximum-entropy component separation method (MEM) for multi-frequency CMB observations that allows one to perform the separation with more plausible assumptions about the receiver noise and foreground astrophysical components. Component separation is considered in the presence of spatially-varying noise variance and spectral properties of the foreground components. It is shown that, if not taken properly into account, the presence of spatially-varying foreground spectra, in particular, can severely reduce the accuracy of the component separation. Nevertheless, by extending the basic method to accommodate such behaviour and the presence of anisotropic noise, we find that the accuracy of the component separation can be improved to a level comparable with previous investigations in which these effects were not present., 11 pages, 15 figures, submitted to MNRAS. A directional spherical wavelet analysis is performed to examine the Gaussianity of the WMAP 1-year data. Such an analysis is facilitated by the introduction of a fast directional continuous spherical wavelet transform. The directional nature of the analysis allows one to probe orientated structure in the data. Significant deviations from Gaussianity are detected in the skewness and kurtosis of spherical elliptical Mexican hat and real Morlet wavelet coefficients for both the WMAP and Tegmark et al. (2003) foreground-removed maps. The previous non-Gaussianity detection made by Vielva et al. (2003) using the spherical symmetric Mexican hat wavelet is confirmed, although their detection at the 99.9% significance level is only made at the 95.3% significance level using our most conservative statistical test. Furthermore, deviations from Gaussianity in the skewness of spherical real Morlet wavelet coefficients on a wavelet scale of 550 arcmin (corresponding to an effective global size on the sky of approximately 26 degrees and an internal size of 3 degrees) at an azimuthal orientation of 72 degrees, are made at the 98.3% significance level, using the same conservative method. The wavelet analysis inherently allows one to localise on the sky those regions that introduce skewness and those that introduce kurtosis. Preliminary noise analysis indicates that these detected deviation regions are not atypical and have average noise dispersion. Further analysis is required to ascertain whether these detected regions correspond to secondary or instrumental effects, or whether in fact the non-Gaussianity detected is due to intrinsic primordial fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, references added, replaced to match version accepted by MNRAS

A fast algorithm for Antoine and Vandergheynst's (1998) directional continuous spherical wavelet transform (CSWT) is presented. Computational requirements are reduced by a factor of O(\sqrt{N}), when N is the number of pixels on the sphere. The spherical Mexican hat wavelet Gaussianity analysis of the WMAP 1-year data performed by Vielva et al. (2003) is reproduced and confirmed using the fast CSWT. As the quality of the available galaxy cluster data improves, the models fitted to these data might be expected to become increasingly complex. Here we present the Bayesian approach to the problem of cluster data modelling: starting from simple, physically motivated parameterised functions to describe the cluster's gas density, gravitational potential and temperature, we explore the high-dimensional parameter spaces with a Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo sampler, and compute the Bayesian evidence in order to make probabilistic statements about the models tested. In this way sufficiently good data will enable the models to be distinguished, enhancing our astrophysical understanding; in any case the models may be marginalised over in the correct way when estimating global, perhaps cosmological, parameters. In this work we apply this methodology to two sets of simulated interferometric Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect and gravitational weak lensing data, corresponding to current and next-generation telescopes. We calculate the expected precision on the measurement of the cluster gas fraction from such experiments, and investigate the effect of the primordial CMB fluctuations on their accuracy. We find that data from instruments such as AMI, when combined with wide-field ground-based weak lensing data, should allow both cluster model selection and estimation of gas fractions to a precision of better than 30 percent for a given cluster., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRAS; accepted 14/8/03 after minor revision

Weak gravitational lensing and the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect provide complementary information on the composition of clusters of galaxies. Preliminary results from cluster SZ observations with the Very Small Array are presented. A Bayesian approach to combining this data with wide field lensing data is then outlined; this allows the relative probabilities of cluster models of varying complexity to be computed. A maximum-likelihood method is presented for estimating the power spectrum of anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) from interferometer observations. The method calculates flat band-power estimates in separate bins in l-space, together with confidence intervals on the power in each bin. For multifrequency data, the power spectrum of the other foreground components may also be recovered. Advantage is taken of several characteristic properties of interferometer data, which together allow the fast calculation of the likelihood function. The method may be applied to single-field or mosaiced observations, and proper account can be taken of non-coplanar baselines. An overview is given of Bayesian inversion and regularization procedures. In particular, the conceptual basis of the maximum entropy method (MEM) is discussed, and extensions to positive/negative and complex data are highlighted. We investigate the power of wavelet techniques in detecting non-Gaussianity in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We use the method to discriminate between an inflationary and a cosmic strings model using small simulated patches of the sky. We show the importance of the choice of a good test statistic in order to optimise the discriminating power of the wavelet technique. In particular, we construct the Fisher discriminant function, which combines all the information available in the different wavelet scales. We also compare the performance of different decomposition schemes and wavelet bases. For our case, we find that the Mallat and {\it \`a trous} algorithms are superior to the 2D-tensor wavelets. Using this technique, the inflationary and strings models are clearly distinguished even in the presence of a superposed Gaussian component with twice the rms amplitude of the original cosmic string map., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present a combined maximum-entropy method (MEM) and Mexican Hat wavelet (MHW) analysis in order to recover the different components of the microwave sky. We apply this technique to simulated observations by the ESA Planck satellite in small patches of the sky. In particular, the introduction of the MHW allows one to detect and subtract the brightest point sources present in the input data and therefore to improve the reconstructions of the CMB and foreground components achieved by MEM on its own. In addition, a point source catalogue at each Planck frequency is produced, which is more complete and accurate than those obtained by each technique independently., 7 pages, 2 figures. We compare and combine likelihood functions of the cosmological parameters Omega_m, h and sigma_8, from peculiar velocities, CMB and type Ia supernovae. These three data sets directly probe the mass in the Universe, without the need to relate the galaxy distribution to the underlying mass via a "biasing" relation. We include the recent results from the CMB experiments BOOMERANG and MAXIMA-1. Our analysis assumes a flat Lambda CDM cosmology with a scale-invariant adiabatic initial power spectrum and baryonic fraction as inferred from big-bang nucleosynthesis. We find that all three data sets agree well, overlapping significantly at the 2 sigma level. This therefore justifies a joint analysis, in which we find a joint best fit point and 95 per cent confidence limits of Omega_m=0.28 (0.17,0.39), h=0.74 (0.64,0.86), and sigma_8=1.17 (0.98,1.37). In terms of the natural parameter combinations for these data sigma_8 Omega_m^0.6 = 0.54 (0.40,0.73), Omega_m h = 0.21 (0.16,0.27). Also for the best fit point, Q_rms-ps = 19.7 muK and the age of the universe is 13.2 Gyr., 8 pages, 5 figures. Submitted to MNRAS

We present an analysis of the Gaussianity of the 4-year COBE-DMR data (in HEALPix pixelisation) based on spherical wavelets. The skewness, kurtosis and scale-scale correlation spectra are computed from the detail wavelet coefficients at each scale. The sensitivity of the method to the orientation of the data is also taken into account. We find a single detection of non-Gaussianity at the $>99%$ confidence level in one of our statistics. We use Monte-Carlo simulations to assess the statistical significance of this detection and find that the probability of obtaining such a detection by chance for an underlying Gaussian field is as high as 0.69. We demonstrate that the maximum-entropy method for gravitational lens reconstruction presented in Bridle et al. (1998) may be applied even when only shear \emph{or} magnification information is present. We also demonstrate that the method can easily handle irregularly shaped observing fields and, because shear is a non-local function of the lensing mass, reconstructions that use shear information can successfully bridge small gaps in observations. For our simulations we use a mass density distribution that is realistic for a z=0.4 cluster of total mass around 10^15 h^-1 M_solar. Using HST-quality shear data alone, covering the area of four WFPC2 observations, we detect 60 per cent of the mass of the cluster within the area observed, despite the mass sheet degeneracy. This is qualitatively because the shear provides information about the variations in the mass distribution, and our prior includes a positivity constraint. We investigate the effect of using various sizes of observing field and find that 50 to 100 per cent of the cluster mass is detected, depending on the observing strategy and cluster shape. Observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), large scale structure (LSS) and standard candles such as Type 1a Supernovae (SN) each place different constraints on the values of cosmological parameters. We assume an inflationary Cold Dark Matter model with a cosmological constant, in which the initial density perturbations in the universe are adiabatic. We discuss the parameter degeneracies inherent in interpreting CMB or SN data, and derive their orthogonal nature. We then present our preliminary results of combining CMB and SN likelihood functions. The results of combining the CMB and IRAS 1.2 Jy survey information are given, with marginalised confidence regions in the H_0, Omega_m, b_IRAS and Q_rms-ps directions assuming n=1, Omega_Lambda+Omega_m=1 and Omega_b h^2=0.024. We combine information on cosmological parameters from cluster abundances, CMB primordial anisotropies and the IRAS 1.2 Jy galaxy redshift survey. We take as free parameters the present values of the total matter density of the universe, Omega_m, the Hubble parameter, h, sigma_8, and the IRAS biasing factor, b_IRAS. We assume that the universe is spatially flat, with a cosmological constant, and that structure formed from adiabatic initial fluctuations with a Harrison-Zel'dovich power spectrum. The nucleosynthesis value Omega_b=0.019/h^2 is adopted. We use the full three- and four- dimensional likelihood functions for each data set and marginalise these to two- and one- dimensional distributions in a Bayesian way, integrating over the other parameters. It is shown that the three data sets are in excellent agreement, with a best fit point of Omega_m= 1-Omega_Lambda=0.36, h=0.54, sigma_8=0.74, and b_IRAS=1.08. This point is within one sigma of the minimum for each data set alone. Pairs of these data sets have their degeneracies in sufficiently different directions that using only two data sets at a time is sufficient to place good constraints on the cosmological parameters. We show that the results from each of the three possible pairings of the data are also in good agreement. Finally, we combine all three data sets to obtain marginalised 68 per cent confidence intervals of 0.30, Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Submitted to MNRAS

Observations of large scale structure (LSS) and the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) each place separate constraints on the values of cosmological parameters. We calculate a joint likelihood based on various CMB experiments and the IRAS 1.2Jy galaxy redshift survey and use this to find an overall optimum with respect to the free parameters. Our formulation self-consistently takes account of the underlying mass distribution, which affects both the CMB potential fluctuations and the IRAS redshift distortion. This not only allows more accurate parameter estimation, but also removes the parameter degeneracy which handicaps calculations based on either approach alone. The family of Cold Dark Matter (CDM) models analysed corresponds to a spatially-flat universe with an initially scale-invariant spectrum and a cosmological constant. Free parameters in the joint model are the mass density due to all matter (Omega_m), Hubble's parameter (h = H_0 / 100km/s Mpc^-1), the quadrupole normalisation of the CMB power spectrum (Q) in uK, and the IRAS light-to-mass bias (b_i). Throughout the analysis, the baryonic density (Omega_b) is required is to satisfy the nucleosynthesis constraint Omega_b h^2 = 0.024. Results from the two data sets show good agreement, and the joint optimum lies at Omega_m=0.39, h=0.53, Q=16.96uK, and b_i=1.21. We perform a combined likelihood analysis of the latest cosmic microwave background anisotropy data and distant Type 1a Supernova data of Perlmutter etal (1998a). Our analysis is restricted to cosmological models where structure forms from adiabatic initial fluctuations characterised by a power-law spectrum with negligible tensor component. Marginalizing over other parameters, our best fit solution gives Omega_m = 0.25 (+0.18, -0.12) and Omega_Lambda = 0.63 (+0.17, -0.23) (95 % confidence errors) for the cosmic densities contributed by matter and a cosmological constant respectively. We present a new model for the formation of spherically symmetric clusters in an expanding Universe. Both the Universe and the collapsing cluster are governed by the same pressure less fluid equations for which a uniform initial density profile is assumed. A simple perturbation imposed on the initial velocity field gives rise to an over-density which closely models real clusters. The computation of photon paths allows us to evaluate the gravitational effects imprinted on a Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) photon passing through such an evolving mass. We investigate the effects of finite sky coverage on the spectral resolution $\Delta\ell$ in the estimation of the CMBR angular power spectrum $C^{\ell}$. A method is developed for obtaining quasi-independent estimates of the power spectrum, and the cosmic/sample variance of these estimates is calculated. The effect of instrumental noise is also considered for prototype interferometer and single-dish experiments. By proposing a statistic for the detection of secondary (Doppler) peaks in the CMBR power spectrum, we then compute the significance level at which such peaks may be detected for a large range of model CMBR experiments.
