We model the effect of grain size distribution in a galaxy on the evolution of CO and H$_2$ abundances. The formation and dissociation of CO and H$_2$ in typical dense clouds are modelled in a manner consistent with the grain size distribution. The evolution of grain size distribution is calculated based on our previous model, which treats the galaxy as a one-zone object but includes various dust processing mechanisms in the interstellar medium (ISM). We find that typical dense clouds become fully molecular (H$_2$) when the dust surface area increases by shattering while an increase of dust abundance by dust growth in the ISM is necessary for a significant rise of the CO abundance. Accordingly, the metallicity dependence of the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor, $X_\mathrm{CO}$, is predominantly driven by dust growth. We also examine the effect of grain size distribution in the galaxy by changing the dense gas fraction, which controls the balance between coagulation and shattering, clarifying that the difference in the grain size distribution significantly affects $X_\mathrm{CO}$ even if the dust-to-gas ratio is the same. The star formation time-scale, which controls the speed of metal enrichment also affects the metallicity at which the CO abundance rapidly increases (or $X_\mathrm{CO}$ drops). We propose an updated dust evolution model that focuses on the grain size distribution in a galaxy. We treat the galaxy as a one-zone object and include five main processes (stellar dust production, dust destruction in supernova shocks, grain growth by accretion and coagulation, and grain disruption by shattering). In this paper, we improve the predictions related to small carbonaceous grains, which are responsible for the 2175 \AA\ bump in the extinction curve and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features in the dust emission spectral energy distribution (SED), both of which were underpredicted in our previous model. In the new model, we hypothesize that small carbonaceous grains are not involved in interstellar processing. This avoids small carbonaceous grains being lost by coagulation. We find that this hypothetical model shows a much better match to the Milky Way (MW) extinction curve and dust emission SED than the previous one. The following two additional modifications further make the fit to the MW dust emission SED better: (i) The chemical enrichment model is adjusted to give a nearly solar metallicity in the present epoch, and the fraction of metals available for dust growth is limited to half. (ii) Aromatization for small carbonaceous grains is efficient, so that the aromatic fraction is unity at grain radii $\lesssim 20$ \AA. To understand how the evolution of grain size distribution in galaxies affects observed dust properties, we apply a post-processing dust evolution model to galaxy merger trees from the IllustrisTNG cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. Our dust model includes stellar dust production, sputtering in hot gas, dust growth by accretion and coagulation in the dense interstellar medium (ISM), and shattering in the diffuse ISM. We decompose the grain size distribution into different dust species depending on the elemental abundances and the dense ISM fraction given by the simulation. In our previous work, we focused on Milky Way (MW) analogues and reproduced the observed MW extinction curve. In this study, we compute dust spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for the MW analogues. Our simulated SEDs broadly reproduce the observed MW SED within their dispersion and so does the observational data of nearby galaxies, although they tend to underpredict the MW SED at short wavelengths where emission is dominated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. We find that metallicity and dense gas fraction are the most critical factors for the SED shape, through their influence on coagulation and shattering. The overall success of our models in reproducing the MW SED further justifies the dust evolution processes included in the model and predicts the dispersion in the SEDs caused by the variety in the assembly history. We also show that the most significant increase in the dust SED occurs between redshifts z ∼ 3 and 2 in the progenitors of the simulated MW-like galaxies.

We investigate how the dust temperature is affected by local environmental quantities, especially dust surface density ($\Sigma_\mathrm{dust}$), dust-to-gas ratio (D/G) and interstellar radiation field. We compile multi-wavelength observations in 46 nearby galaxies, uniformly processed with a common physical resolution of $2~$kpc. A physical dust model is used to fit the infrared dust emission spectral energy distribution (SED) observed with WISE and Herschel. The star formation rate (SFR) is traced with GALEX ultraviolet data corrected by WISE infrared. We find that the dust temperature correlates well with the SFR surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$), which traces the radiation from young stars. The dust temperature decreases with increasing D/G at fixed $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ as expected from stronger dust shielding at high D/G, when $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$ is higher than $\sim 2\times 10^{-3}~\rm M_\odot~yr^{-1}~kpc^{-2}$. These measurements are in good agreement with the dust temperature predicted by our proposed analytical model. Below this range of $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$, the observed dust temperature is higher than the model prediction and is only weakly dependent on D/G, which is possibly due to the dust heating from old stellar population or the variation of SFR within the past $10^{10}~$yr. Overall, the dust temperature as a function of $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$ and $\Sigma_\mathrm{dust}$ predicted by our analytical model is consistent with observations. We also notice that at fixed gas surface density, $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ tends to increase with D/G, i.e. we can empirically modify the Kennicutt-Schmidt law with a dependence on D/G to better match observations., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Dust emission from high-redshift galaxies gives us a clue to the origin and evolution of dust in the early Universe. Previous studies have shown that different sources of dust (stellar dust production and dust growth in dense clouds) predict different ultraviolet (UV) extinction curves for galaxies at $z\sim 7$ but that the observed attenuation curves depend strongly on the geometry of dust and star distributions. Thus, we perform radiative transfer calculations under the dust-stars geometries computed by a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation (IllustrisTNG). This serves to investigate the dust attenuation curves predicted from `realistic' geometries. We choose objects with stellar mass and star formation rate appropriate for Lyman break galaxies at $z\sim 7$. We find that the attenuation curves are very different from the original extinction curves in most of the galaxies. This makes it difficult to constrain the dominant dust sources from the observed attenuation curves. We further include infrared dust emission in the analysis and plot the infrared excess (IRX)-UV spectral slope ($\beta$) diagram. We find that different sources of dust cause different IRX-$\beta$ relations for the simulated galaxies. In particular, if dust growth is the main source of dust, a variation of dust-to-metal ratio causes a more extended sequence with smaller IRX in the IRX-$\beta$ diagram. Dust has been detected in high-redshift ($z>5$) galaxies but its origin is still being debated. Dust production in high-redshift galaxies could be dominated by stellar production or by accretion (dust growth) in the interstellar medium. Previous studies have shown that these two dust sources predict different grain size distributions, which lead to significantly different extinction curves. In this paper, we investigate how the difference in the extinction curves affects the dust attenuation properties of galaxies by performing radiative transfer calculations. To examine the major effects of the dust--stars distribution geometry, we adopt two representative cases in spherical symmetry: the well-mixed geometry (stars and dust are homogeneously mixed) and the two-layer geometry (young stars are more concentrated in the centre). In both cases, we confirm that the attenuation curve can be drastically steepened by scattering and by different optical depths between young and old stellar populations, and can be flattened by the existence of unobscured stellar populations. We can reproduce similar attenuation curves even with very different extinction curves. Thus, we conclude that it is difficult to distinguish the dust sources only with attenuation curves. However, if we include information on dust emission and plot the IRX (infrared excess)--$\beta$ (ultraviolet spectral slope) relation, different dust sources predict different positions in the IRX--$\beta$ diagram. We investigate the cosmological evolution of interstellar dust with a semi-analytical galaxy formation model ($\nu^2$GC), focusing on the evolution of grain size distribution. The model predicts the statistical properties of dust mass and grain size distribution in galaxies across cosmic history. We confirm that the model reproduces the relation between dust-to-gas ratio and metallicity in the local Universe, and that the grain size distributions of the Milky Way (MW)-like sample become similar to the so-called MRN distribution that reproduces the observed MW extinction curve. Our model, however, tends to overpredict the dust mass function at the massive end at redshift $z\lesssim 0.8$ while it reproduces the abundance of dusty galaxies at higher redshifts. We also examine the correlation between grain size distribution and galaxy properties (metallicity, specific star formation rate, gas fraction, and stellar mass), and observe a clear trend of large-grain-dominated, small-grain-dominated, and MRN-like grain size distributions from unevolved to evolved stages. As a consequence, the extinction curve shapes are flat, steep, and intermediate (MW-like) from the unevolved to evolved phases. At a fixed metallicity, the grain size distribution tends to have larger fractions of small grains at lower redshift; accordingly, the extinction curve tends to be steeper at lower redshift. We study spatially resolved scaling relations among stars, dust, and gas in ten nearby spiral galaxies. In a preceding paper Abdurro'uf et al. (2022), we have derived spatially resolved properties of the stellar population and dust by panchromatic spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting using piXedfit. Now, we investigate resolved star formation ($\Sigma_{\rm H_{2}}$--$\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$--$\Sigma_{*}$) and dust scaling relations. While the relations with all sub-galactic regions of the galaxies are reasonably tight ($\sigma \lesssim 0.3$ dex), we find that most of the scaling relations exhibit galaxy-to-galaxy variations in normalization and shape. Only two relations of $\Sigma_{\rm dust}$--$\Sigma_{\rm gas}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm dust}$--$\Sigma_{\rm H_{2}}$ do not show noticeable galaxy-to-galaxy variations among our sample galaxies. We further investigate correlations among the scaling relations. We find significant correlations among the normalization of the $\Sigma_{\rm H_{2}}$--$\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$--$\Sigma_{*}$ relations, which suggest that galaxies with higher levels of resolved $\text{H}_{2}$ fraction ($f_{\rm H_{2}}$) tend to have higher levels of resolved star formation efficiency (SFE) and specific star formation rate (sSFR). We also observe that galaxies with higher levels of resolved dust-to-stellar mass ratios tend to have higher levels of resolved sSFR, SFE, and $f_{\rm H_{2}}$. Moreover, we find that galaxies with higher global sSFR and less compact morphology tend to have higher levels of the resolved sSFR, SFE, and $f_{\rm H_{2}}$, which can explain the variations in the normalization of the $\Sigma_{\rm H_{2}}$--$\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$--$\Sigma_{*}$ relationships. Observed reddening in the circum-galactic medium (CGM) indicates a significant abundance of small grains, of which the origin is still to be clarified. We examine a possible path of small-grain production through shattering of pre-existing large grains in the CGM. Possible sites where shattering occurs on a reasonable time-scale are cool clumps with hydrogen number density $n_\mathrm{H}\sim 0.1$ cm$^{-3}$ and gas temperature $T_\mathrm{gas}\sim 10^4$ K, which are shown to exist through observations of Mg II absorbers. We calculate the evolution of grain size distribution in physical conditions appropriate for cool clumps in the CGM, starting from a large-grain-dominated distribution suggested from theoretical studies. With an appropriate gas turbulence model expected from the physical condition of cold clumps (maximum eddy size and velocity of $\sim$100 pc and 10 km s$^{-1}$, respectively), together with the above gas density and temperature and the dust-to-gas mass ratio inferred from observations (0.006), we find that small-grain production occurs on a time-scale (a few $\times 10^8$ yr) comparable to the lifetime of cool clumps derived in the literature. Thus, the physical conditions of the cool clouds are favrourable for small-grain production. We also confirm that the reddening becomes significant on the above time-scale. Therefore, we conclude that small-grain production by shattering is a probable cause for the observed reddening in the CGM. We model dust evolution in Milky Way-like galaxies by post-processing the IllustrisTNG cosmological hydrodynamical simulations in order to predict dust-to-gas ratios and grain size distributions. We treat grain-size-dependent dust growth and destruction processes using a 64-bin discrete grain size evolution model without spatially resolving each galaxy. Our model broadly reproduces the observed dust--metallicity scaling relation in nearby galaxies. The grain size distribution is dominated by large grains at $z\gtrsim 3$ and the small-grain abundance rapidly increases by shattering and accretion (dust growth) at $z\lesssim 2$. The grain size distribution approaches the so-called MRN distribution at $z\sim 1$, but a suppression of large-grain abundances occurs at $z2$, and become consistent with the Milky Way extinction curve at $z\lesssim 1$ at $1/��< 6~\rm ��m^{-1}$. However, typical extinction curves predicted by our model have a steeper slope at short wavelengths than is observed in the Milky Way. This is due to the low-redshift decline of gas-phase metallicity and the dense gas fraction in our TNG Milky Way analogues that suppresses the formation of large grains through coagulation., 16 pages, 14 figures (13 in the main text, 1 in the appendix). Based on a one-zone evolution model of grain size distribution in a galaxy, we calculate the evolution of infrared spectral energy distribution (SED), considering silicate, carbonaceous dust, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The dense gas fraction ($\eta_\mathrm{dense}$) of the interstellar medium (ISM), the star formation time-scale ($\tau_\mathrm{SF}$), and the interstellar radiation field intensity normalized to the Milky Way value ($U$) are the main parameters. We find that the SED shape generally has weak mid-infrared (MIR) emission in the early phase of galaxy evolution because the dust abundance is dominated by large grains. At an intermediate stage ($t\sim 1$ Gyr for $\tau_\mathrm{SF}=5$ Gyr), the MIR emission grows rapidly because the abundance of small grains increases drastically by the accretion of gas-phase metals. We also compare our results with observational data of nearby and high-redshift ($z\sim 2$) galaxies taken by \textit{Spitzer}. We broadly reproduce the flux ratios in various bands as a function of metallicity. We find that small $\eta_\mathrm{dense}$ (i.e.\ the ISM dominated by the diffuse phase) is favoured to reproduce the 8 $\mu$m intensity dominated by PAHs both for the nearby and the $z\sim 2$ samples. A long $\tau_\mathrm{SF}$ raises the 8 $\mu$m emission to a level consistent with the nearby low-metallicity galaxies. The broad match between the theoretical calculations and the observations supports our understanding of the grain size distribution, but the importance of the diffuse ISM for the PAH emission implies the necessity of spatially resolved treatment for the ISM., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Interstellar dust grains can be spun up by radiative torques, and the resulting centrifugal force may be strong enough to disrupt large dust grains. We examine the effect of this rotational disruption on the evolution of grain size distribution in galaxies. To this goal, we modify our previous model by assuming that rotational disruption is the major small-grain production mechanism. We find that rotational disruption can have a large influence on the evolution of grain size distribution in the following two aspects especially for composites and grain mantles (with tensile strength $\sim 10^7$ erg cm$^{-3}$). First, because of the short time-scale of rotational disruption, the small-grain production occurs even in the early phase of galaxy evolution. Therefore, even though stars produce large grains, the abundance of small grains can be large enough to steepen the extinction curve. Secondly, rotational disruption is important in determining the maximum grain radius, which regulates the steepness of the extinction curve. For compact grains with tensile strength $\gtrsim 10^9$ erg cm$^{-3}$, the size evolution is significantly affected by rotational disruption only if the radiation field is as strong as (or the dust temperature is as high as) expected for starburst galaxies. For compact grains, rotational disruption predicts that the maximum grain radius becomes less than 0.2 $\mu$m for galaxies with a dust temperature $\gtrsim 50$ K., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Understanding the evolution of dust and molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) is a critical aspect of galaxy evolution, as they affect star formation and the spectral energy distribution of galaxies. We use the $N$-body/smoothed-particle-hydrodynamics code {\sc Gadget-4} to compute the evolution of dust and H$_2$ in a suite of numerical simulations of an isolated Milky-Way-like galaxy. The evolution of the full grain size distribution (GSD) is solved by sampling the grain size on a logarithmically spaced grid with 30 bins. The evolution of a primordial chemistry network with twelve species is solved consistently with the hydrodynamic evolution of the system, including star formation, metal and energy ejections from stars into the interstellar medium through supernova feedback and stellar winds. The formation model for H$_2$ considers the GSD and photo-dissociation through the UV radiation of young stars. We identify the processes needed for producing a sizeable amount of H$_2$, verify that the resulting star formation law in the later stages of galaxy evolution is consistent with observations of local spirals, and show that our model manages to produce a galactic molecular gas fraction in line with observations of Milky-Way-like galaxies. We stress the importance of the co-evolution of the GSD and H$_2$, as models assuming a fixed MRN shape for the GSD overestimate the production of H$_2$ in regimes where the dust abundance is dominated by large grains and underestimate it in the regime where the dust is dominated by small grains, both of which are realized in simulations of dust evolution., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 16 pages, 13 figures

We investigate physical reasons for high dust temperatures ($T_\mathrm{dust}\gtrsim 40$ K) observed in some high-redshift ($z>5$) galaxies using analytic models. We consider two models that can be treated analytically: the radiative transfer (RT) model, {where a broad distribution of values for $T_\mathrm{dust}$ is considered}, and the one-tempearture (one-$T$) model, which assumes {uniform $T_\mathrm{dust}$}. These two extremes {serve to bracket the most realistic scenario}. We adopt the Kennicutt--Schmidt (KS) law to relate stellar radiation field to gas surface density, and vary the dust-to-gas ratio. As a consequence, our model is capable of predicting the relation between the surface density of star formation rate ($\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$) or dust mass ($\Sigma_\mathrm{dust}$) and $T_\mathrm{dust}$. We show that the high $T_\mathrm{dust}$ observed at $z\gtrsim 5$ favour low dust-to-gas ratios ($\lesssim 10^{-3}$). An enhanced star formation compared with the KS law gives an alternative explanation for the high $T_\mathrm{dust}$. The dust temperatures are similar between the two (RT and one-$T$) models as long as we use ALMA Bands 6--8. We also examine the relation among $\Sigma_\mathrm{SFR}$, $\Sigma_\mathrm{dust}$ and $T_\mathrm{dust}$ without assuming the KS law, and confirm the consistency with the actual observational data at $z>5$. In the one-$T$ model, we also examine a clumpy dust distribution, which predicts lower $T_\mathrm{dust}$ because of the leakage of stellar radiation. We compute the evolution of the grain size distribution (GSD) in a suite of numerical simulations of an isolated Milky-Way-like galaxy using the $N$-body/smoothed-particle-hydrodynamics code {\sc Gadget-4}. The full GSD is sampled on a logarithmically spaced grid with 30 bins, and its evolution is calculated self-consistently with the hydrodynamical and chemical evolution of the galaxy using a state-of-the-art star formation and feedback model. In previous versions of this model, the GSD tended to be slightly biased towards larger grains and the extinction curve had a tendency to be flatter than the observations. This work addresses these issues by considering the diffusion of dust and metals through turbulence on subgrid scales and introducing a multi-phase subgrid model that enables a smoother transition from diffuse to dense gas. We show that diffusion can significantly enhance the production of small grains and improve the agreement with the observed dust extinction curve in the Milky Way., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 20 pages, 23 figures

The dust properties in high-redshift galaxies provide clues to the origin of dust in the Universe. Although dust has been detected in galaxies at redshift $z>7$, it is difficult to constrain the dominant dust sources only from the total dust amount. Thus, we calculate the evolution of grain size distribution, expecting that different dust sources predict different grain size distributions. Using the star formation time-scale and the total baryonic mass constrained by the data in the literature, we calculate the evolution of grain size distribution. To explain the total dust masses in ALMA-detected $z>7$ galaxies, the following two solutions are possible: (i) high dust condensation efficiency in stellar ejecta, and (ii) efficient accretion (dust growth by accreting the gas-phase metals in the interstellar medium). We find that these two scenarios predict significantly different grain size distributions: in (i), the dust is dominated by large grains ($a\gtrsim 0.1~\mu$m, where $a$ is the grain radius), while in (ii), the small-grain ($a\lesssim 0.01~\mu$m) abundance is significantly enhanced by accretion. Accordingly, extinction curves are expected to be much steeper in (ii) than in (i). We investigate the evolution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) abundance in a galaxy, which is a crucial step to understand the evolution of bright emission features in the mid-infrared range. We calculate the evolution of dust grain size distribution in a manner consistent with the physical conditions of the interstellar medium by post-processing our previous hydrodynamical simulation of an isolated disc galaxy. We also differentiate between aromatic and non-aromatic grains for carbonaceous dust species and explicitly considered the aromatization process. As a consequence, our model explains the metallicity dependence of PAH abundances in nearby galaxies well. The PAH abundance increase is driven particularly by the interplay between shattering and accretion (dust growth). The fast aromatization guarantees that the small carbonaceous grains trace PAHs very well. Since shattering and accretion are sensitive to the dust abundance, we predict that the PAH-to-dust abundance ratio increases as the metallicity increases. The origin of dust in galaxy halos or in the circum-galactic medium (CGM) is still a mystery. We investigate if the radiation pressure in high-redshift ($z\sim 10$) galaxies can efficiently transport dust to halos. To clarify the first dust enrichment of galaxy halos in the early Universe, we solve the motion of a dust grain considering radiation pressure, gas drag, and gravity in the vertical direction of the galactic disc. Radiation pressure is estimated in a consistent manner with the stellar spectra and dust extinction. As a consequence, we find that dust grains with radii $a\sim 0.1~\mu$m successfully escape from the galactic disc if the ongoing star formation episode converts more than 15 per cent of the baryon content into stars and lasts $\gtrsim 30$ Myr, while larger and smaller grains are trapped in the disc because of gravity and gas drag, respectively. We also show that grain charge significantly enhances gas drag at a few--10 scale heights of the galactic disc, where the grain velocities are suppressed to $\sim 1$ km s$^{-1}$. There is an optimum dust-to-gas ratio ($\sim 10^{-3}$) in the galactic disc and an optimum virial mass $\sim 10^{10}$--$10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$ for the transport of $a\sim 0.1~\mu$m grains to the halo. Recent progress in submillimetre surveys by single-dish telescopes allows us to further challenge the consistency between cosmological simulations and observations. In particular, we compare our simulations that include dust formation and destruction with the recent SCUBA-2 surveys (`STUDIES') by putting emphases on basic observational properties of dust emission such as dust temperature, size of infrared (IR)-emitting region, IR luminosity function and IRX--$\beta$ relation. After confirming that our models reproduce the local galaxy properties, we examine the STUDIES sample at $z\approx 1-4$, finding that the simulation reproduces the aforementioned quantities except for the $z\gtrsim 2$ IR luminosity function at the massive end ($\sim 10^{13}$ L$_{\odot}$). This means that the current simulation correctly reproduces the overall scaling between the size and luminosity (or star formation rate) of dusty region, but lacks extreme starburst phenomena at $z\gtrsim 2$. Some studies suggest that the dust temperatures ($T_\mathrm{d}$) in high-redshift ($z\gtrsim 5$) Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) are high. However, possible observational bias in $T_\mathrm{d}$ is yet to be understood. Thus, we perform a simple test using random realizations of LBGs with various stellar masses, dust temperatures, and dust-to-stellar mass ratios, and examine how the sample detected by ALMA is biased in terms of $T_\mathrm{d}$. We show that ALMA tends to miss high-$T_\mathrm{d}$ objects even at total dust luminosity. LBGs are, however, basically selected by the stellar UV luminosity. The dust-temperature bias in a UV-selected sample is complicated because of the competing effects between high $T_\mathrm{d}$ and low dust abundance. For ALMA Band 6, there is no tendency of high-$T_\mathrm{d}$ LBGs being more easily detected in our experiment. Thus, we suggest that the observed trend of high $T_\mathrm{d}$ in $z\gtrsim 5$ LBGs is real. We also propose that the 450 $\mu$m band is useful in further clarifying the dust temperatures. To overcome the current shallowness of 450 $\mu$m observations, we examine a future Antarctic 30-m class telescope with a suitable atmospheric condition for wavelengths $\lesssim 450~\mu$m, where the detection is not confusion-limited. We find that, with this telescope, an $L_\mathrm{IR}$-selected sample with $\log(L_\mathrm{IR}/\mathrm{L}_{\odot})>11$ is constructed for $z\gtrsim 5$, and detection in the intermediate-$M_\star$ (stellar mass) range [$9, Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The radiative properties of interstellar dust are affected not only by the grain size distribution but also by the grain porosity. We develop a model for the evolution of size-dependent grain porosity and grain size distribution over the entire history of galaxy evolution. We include stellar dust production, supernova dust destruction, shattering, coagulation, and accretion. Coagulation is {assumed to be} the source of grain porosity. We use a one-zone model with a constant dense gas fraction ($\eta_\mathrm{dense}$), which regulates the balance between shattering and coagulation. We find that porosity develops after small grains are sufficiently created by the interplay between shattering and accretion (at age $t\sim 1$ Gyr for star formation time-scale $\tau_\mathrm{SF}=5$ Gyr) and are coagulated. The filling factor drops down to 0.3 at grain radii $\sim 0.03~\mu$m for $\eta_\mathrm{dense}=0.5$. The grains are more porous for smaller $\eta_\mathrm{dense}$ because small grains, from which porous coagulated grains form, are more abundant. We also calculate the extinction curves based on the above results. The porosity steepens the extinction curve significantly for silicate, but not much for amorphous carbon. The porosity also increases the collisional cross-sections and produces slightly more large grains through the enhanced coagulation; however, the extinction curve does not necessarily become flatter because of the steepening effect by porosity. The chemical enrichment in the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies is regulated by several physical processes: stellar evolution, grain formation and destruction, galactic inflows and outflows. Understanding such processes is essential to follow the chemical enrichment of galaxies through the cosmic epochs, and to interpret the observations. Despite the importance of such topics, the efficiency of the different processes driving the evolution of baryons in galaxies, remain controversial. We revise the current description of metal and dust evolution in local low-metallicity dwarf galaxies and we develop a description for Lyman Break Galaxies. Our main goal is to reproduce i) the peak in the mass of dust over the mass of stars (sMdust) observed within few hundred Myrs; ii) the decrease of the sMdust at later time. The spectral energy distribution of the galaxies is fitted with the "Code Investigating GALaxies Emission" (CIGALE), through which the stellar and dust masses, and the star formation rate are estimated. For some of the dwarf galaxies, the metal and gas content are also available. We run different calculations of chemical evolution in galaxies, and we fit the observed properties through the model predictions. We show that i) a top-heavy initial mass function that favours massive stars and a dust condensation fraction for Type II Supernovae (SNe II) of 50% or more help to reproduce the peak of sMdust observed after 100 Myrs since the beginning of the cycle; ii) galactic outflows play a crucial role in reproducing the decline in sMdust with age, and they are more efficient than grain destruction from SNe II; iii) a star formation efficiency (mass of gas converted into stars) of few per cent is required to explain the metallicity of local dwarf galaxies; iv) dust growth in the ISM is not necessary to reproduce the sMdust and, if present, its effect is erased by galactic outflows., 28 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We formulate and calculate the evolution of dust in a galaxy focusing on the distinction among various dust components -- silicate, aromatic carbon, and non-aromatic carbon. We treat the galaxy as a one-zone object and adopt the evolution model of grain size distribution developed in our previous work. We further include aromatization and aliphatization (inverse reaction of aromatization). We regard small aromatic grains in a radius range of 3--50 \AA\ as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). We also calculate extinction curves in a consistent manner with the abundances of silicate and aromatic and non-aromatic carbonaceous dust. Our model nicely explains the PAH abundance as a function of metallicity in nearby galaxies. The extinction curve become similar to the Milky Way curve at age $\sim$ 10 Gyr, in terms of the carbon bump strength and the far-ultraviolet slope. We also apply our model to starburst galaxies by shortening the star formation time-scale (0.5 Gyr) and increasing the dense-gas fraction (0.9), finding that the extinction curve maintains bumpless shapes (because of low aromatic fractions), which are similar to the extinction curves observed in the Small Magellanic Cloud and high-redshift quasars. The first generation of stars were born a few hundred million years after the big bang. These stars synthesized elements heavier than H and He, that are later expelled into the interstellar medium, initiating the rise of metals. Within this enriched medium, the first dust grains formed. This event is cosmological crucial for molecule formation as dust plays a major role by cooling low-metallicity star-forming clouds which can fragment to create lower mass stars. Collecting information on these first dust grains is difficult because of the negative alliance of large distances and low dust masses. We combine the observational information from galaxies at redshifts 5 < z < 10 to constrain their dust emission and theoretically understand the first evolutionary phases of the dust cycle. Spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are fitted with CIGALE and the physical parameters and their evolution are modelled. From this SED fitting, we build a dust emission template for this population of galaxies in the epoch of reionization. Our new models explain why some early galaxies are observed and others are not. We follow in time the formation of the first grains by supernovae later destroyed by other supernova blasts and expelled in the circumgalactic and intergalactic media. We have found evidence for the first dust grains formed in the universe. But, above all, this letter underlines the need to collect more data and to develop new facilities to further constrain the dust cycle in galaxies in the epoch of reionization., Comment: Paper accepted for publication in section 4. We study spatially resolved properties (on spatial scales of $\sim 1-2$ kpc out to at least $3$ effective radii) of the stars, dust, and gas in ten nearby spiral galaxies. The properties of the stellar population and dust are derived by fitting the spatially resolved spectral energy distribution (SED) with more than 20 photometric bands ranging from far-ultraviolet to far-infrared. Our newly developed software piXedfit performs point spread function matching of images, pixel binning, and models the stellar light, dust attenuation, dust emission, and emission from a dusty torus heated by an active galactic nucleus simultaneously through the energy balance approach. With this self-consistent analysis, we present the spatially resolved version of the IRX--$\beta$ relation, finding that it is consistent with the relationship from the integrated photometry. We show that the old stellar populations contribute to the dust heating, which causes an overestimation of star formation rate (SFR) derived from the total ultraviolet and infrared luminosities on kpc scales. With archival high-resolution maps of atomic and molecular gas, we study the radial variation of the properties of the stellar populations (including stellar mass, age, metallicity, and SFR), dust (including dust mass, dust temperature, and abundance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon), gas, as well as dust-to-stellar mass and dust-to-gas mass ratios. We observe a depletion of molecular gas mass fraction in the central region of the majority of the galaxies, suggesting that the lack of available fuel is an important factor in suppressing the specific SFR at the center., Comment: 35 pages, 19 figures, 4 tables. We revisit the evolution model of grain size distribution in a galaxy for the ultimate purpose of implementing it in hydrodynamical simulations. We simplify the previous model in such a way that some model-dependent assumptions are replaced with simpler functional forms. For the first test of the developed framework, we apply it to a one-zone chemical evolution model of a galaxy, confirming that our new model satisfactorily reproduces the previous results and that efficient coagulation of small grains produced by shattering and accretion is essential in reproducing the so-called MRN grain size distribution. For the next step, in order to test if our model can be treated together with the hydrodynamical evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM), we post-process a hydrodynamical simulation of an isolated disc galaxy using the new grain evolution model. We sample hydrodynamical particles representing each of the dense and diffuse ISM phases. By this post-processing, we find that the processes occurring in the dense gas (grain growth by accretion and coagulation) are important in reproducing the grain size distribution consistent with the Milky Way extinction curve. In our model, the grain size distributions are similar between the dense and diffuse ISM, although we observe a larger dispersion in the dense ISM. Moreover, we also show that even if we degrade the grain radius resolution (with 16 grid points), the overall shape of grain size distribution (and of resulting extinction curve) can be captured., 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Dust grains are the building {blocks} of future planets. They evolve in size, shape and composition during the life cycle of the interstellar medium. We seek to understand the process which leads from diffuse medium grains to dust grains in the vicinity of protostars inside disks. As a first step, we propose to characterize the dust evolution inside pre-stellar cores thanks to multi-wavelength observations. To study the dust evolution in the cosmological structure formation history, we perform a smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulation with a dust enrichment model in a cosmological volume. We adopt the dust evolution model that represents the grain size distribution by two sizes and takes into account stellar dust production and interstellar dust processing. We examine the dust mass function and the scaling properties of dust in terms of the characteristics of galaxies. The simulation broadly reproduces the observed dust mass functions at redshift $z = 0$, except that it overproduces the massive end at dust mass $M_\mathrm{d} \gtrsim 10^{8}$ ${\rm M}_\odot$. This overabundance is due to overproducing massive gas/metal-rich systems, but we also note that the relation between stellar mass and gas-phase metallicity is reproduced fairly well by our recipe. The relation between dust-to-gas ratio and metallicity shows a good agreement with the observed one at $z=0$, which indicates successful implementation of dust evolution in our cosmological simulation. Star formation consumes not only gas but also dust, causing a decreasing trend of the dust-to-stellar mass ratio at the high-mass end of galaxies. We also examine the redshift evolution up to $z \sim~ 5$, and find that the galaxies have on average the highest dust mass at $z = 1-2$. For the grain size distribution, we find that galaxies with metallicity $\sim 0.3~ Z_\odot$ tend to have the highest small-to-large grain abundance ratio; consequently, the extinction curves in those galaxies have the steepest ultraviolet slopes., 18 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

An important aspect of quenching star formation is the removal of the cold interstellar medium (ISM; non-ionised gas and dust) from a galaxy. In addition, dust grains can be destroyed in a hot or turbulent medium. The adopted timescale of dust removal usually relies on uncertain theoretical estimates. It is tricky to track the dust removal, because usually dust is constantly replenished by consecutive generations of stars. Our objective is to measure observationally the timescale of dust removal. We here explore an approach to select galaxies which do have detectable amounts of dust and cold ISM but exhibit a low current dust production rate. Any decrease of the dust and gas content as a function of the age of such galaxies therefore must be attributed to processes governing the ISM removal. We used a sample of galaxies detected by Herschel in the far-infrared with visually assigned early-type morphology or spirals with red colours. We also obtained JCMT/SCUBA-2 observations for five of them. We discovered an exponential decline of the dust-to-stellar mass ratio with age, which we interpret as an evolutionary trend of dust removal from these galaxies. For the first time we directly measure the dust removal timescale in such galaxies to be tau=(2.5+-0.4) Gyr (the corresponding half-life time is (1.75+-0.25) Gyr). This quantity may be used in models in which it must be assumed a priori and cannot be derived. Any process which removes dust in these galaxies, such as dust grain destruction, cannot happen on shorter timescales. The timescale is comparable to the quenching timescales found in simulations for galaxies with similar stellar masses. The dust is likely of internal, not external origin. We compute the evolution of interstellar dust in a hydrodynamic simulation of an isolated disc galaxy. We newly implement the evolution of full grain size distribution by sampling 32 grid points on the axis of the grain radius. We solve it consistently with the chemical enrichment and hydrodynamic evolution of the galaxy. This enables us to theoretically investigate spatially resolved evolution of grain size distribution in a galaxy. The grain size distribution evolves from a large-grain-dominated ($\gtrsim 0.1~\mu$m) phase to a small-grain production phase, eventually converging to a power-law-like grain size distribution similar to the so-called MRN distribution. We find that the small-grain abundance is higher in the dense ISM in the early epoch ($t\lesssim 1$ Gyr) because of efficient dust growth by accretion, while coagulation makes the small-grain abundance less enhanced in the dense ISM later. This leads to steeper extinction curves in the dense ISM than in the diffuse ISM in the early phase, while they show the opposite trend later. The radial trend is also described by faster evolution in the inner part. We also confirm that the simulation reproduces the observed trend in the relation between dust-to-gas ratio and metallicity, and in the radial gradients of dust-to-gas ratio and dust-to-metal ratio. Since the above change in the grain size distribution occurs at $t\sim 1$ Gyr, the age and density dependence of grain size distribution has a significant impact on the extinction curves even at high redshift., Comment: Accepted for publication into MNRAS, 16 pages, 8 figures

Recent ALMA observations of high-redshift normal galaxies have been providing a great opportunity to clarify the general origin of dust in the Universe, not biased to very bright special objects even at $z>6$. To clarify what constraint we can get for the dust enrichment in normal galaxies detected by ALMA, we use a theoretical model that includes major processes driving dust evolution in a galaxy; that is, dust condensation in stellar ejecta, dust growth by the accretion of gas-phase metals, and supernova destruction. Using the dust emission fluxes detected in two normal galaxies at $z>6$ by ALMA as a constraint, we can get the range of the time-scales (or efficiencies) of the above mentioned processes. We find that if we assume extremely high condensation efficiency in stellar ejecta ($f_{\mathrm{in}} \ga 0.5$), rapid dust enrichment by stellar sources in the early phase may be enough to explain the observed ALMA flux, unless dust destruction by supernovae in those galaxies is stronger than that in nearby galaxies. If we assume a condensation efficiency expected from theoretical calculations ($f_{\mathrm{in}} \la 0.1$), strong dust growth (even stronger than assumed for nearby galaxies if they are metal-poor galaxies) is required. These results indicate that the normal galaxies detected by ALMA at $z>6$ are biased to objects (i) with high dust condensation efficiency in stellar ejecta, (ii) with strong dust growth in very dense molecular clouds, or (iii) with efficient dust growth because of fast metal enrichment up to solar metallicity. A measurement of metallicity is crucial to distinguish among these possibilities.

Some very large (>0.1 um) presolar grains are sampled in meteorites. We reconsider the lifetime of very large grains (VLGs) in the interstellar medium focusing on interstellar shattering caused by turbulence-induced large velocity dispersions. This path has never been noted as a dominant mechanism of destruction. We show that, if interstellar shattering is the main mechanism of destruction of VLGs, their lifetime is estimated to be $\gtrsim 10^8$ yr; in particular, very large SiC grains can survive cosmic-ray exposure time. However, most presolar SiC grains show residence times significantly shorter than 1 Gyr, which may indicate that there is a more efficient mechanism than shattering in destroying VLGs, or that VLGs have larger velocity dispersions than 10 km s$^{-1}$. We also argue that the enhanced lifetime of SiC relative to graphite can be the reason why we find SiC among $��$m-sized presolar grains, while the abundance of SiC in the normal interstellar grains is much lower than graphite., 7 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in Planetary and Space Science (special issue for Cosmic Dust VIII)

We investigate the abundance and properties (especially, grain size) of dust in galaxy halos using available observational data in the literature. There are two major sets of data. One is (i) the reddening curves at redshifts $z\sim 1$ and 2 derived for Mg II absorbers, which are assumed to trace the medium in galaxy halos. The other is (ii) the cosmic extinction up to $z\sim 2$ mainly traced by distant background quasars. For (i), the observed reddening curves favor a grain radius of $a\sim 0.03~\mu$m for silicate, while graphite is not supported because of its strong 2175 \AA\ bump. Using amorphous carbon improves the fit to the reddening curves compared with graphite if the grain radius is $a\lesssim 0.03~\mu$m. For (ii), the cosmic extinction requires $\eta\gtrsim 10^{-2}$ ($\eta$ is the ratio of the halo dust mass to the stellar mass; the observationally suggested value is $\eta\sim 10^{-3}$) for silicate if $a\sim 0.03~\mu$m as suggested by the reddening curve constraint. Thus, for silicate, we do not find any grain radius that satisfies both (i) and (ii) unless the halo dust abundance is much larger than suggested by the observations. For amorphous carbon, in contrast, a wide range of grain radius ($a\sim 0.01$--0.3~$\mu$m) is accepted by the cosmic extinction; thus, we find that a grain radius range of $a\sim 0.01$--0.03 $\mu$m is supported by combining (i) and (ii). A planned rapid submillimeter (submm) Gamma Ray Burst (GRBs) follow-up observations conducted using the Greenland Telescope (GLT) is presented. The GLT is a 12-m submm telescope to be located at the top of the Greenland ice sheet, where the high-altitude and dry weather porvides excellent conditions for observations at submm wavelengths. With its combination of wavelength window and rapid responding system, the GLT will explore new insights on GRBs. Summarizing the current achievements of submm GRB follow-ups, we identify the following three scientific goals regarding GRBs: (1) systematic detection of bright submm emissions originating from reverse shock (RS) in the early afterglow phase, (2) characterization of forward shock and RS emissions by capturing their peak flux and frequencies and performing continuous monitoring, and (3) detections of GRBs as a result of the explosion of first-generation stars result of GRBs at a high redshift through systematic rapid follow ups. We have recently suggested that dust growth in the cold gas phase dominates the dust abundance in elliptical galaxies while dust is efficiently destroyed in the hot X-ray emitting plasma (hot gas). In order to understand the dust evolution in elliptical galaxies, we construct a simple model that includes dust growth in the cold gas and dust destruction in the hot gas. We also take into account the effect of mass exchange between these two gas components induced by active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback. We survey reasonable ranges of the relevant parameters in the model and find that AGN feedback cycles actually produce a variety in cold gas mass and dust-to-gas ratio. By comparing with an observational sample of nearby elliptical galaxies, we find that, although the dust-to-gas ratio varies by an order of magnitude in our model, the entire range of the observed dust-to-gas ratios is difficult to be reproduced under a single parameter set. Variation of the dust growth efficiency is the most probable solution to explain the large variety in dust-to-gas ratio of the observational sample. To understand the evolution of extinction curve, we calculate the dust evolution in a galaxy using smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations incorporating stellar dust production, dust destruction in supernova shocks, grain growth by accretion and coagulation, and grain disruption by shattering. The dust species are separated into carbonaceous dust and silicate. The evolution of grain size distribution is considered by dividing grain population into large and small gains, which allows us to estimate extinction curves. We examine the dependence of extinction curves on the position, gas density, and metallicity in the galaxy, and find that extinction curves are flat at $t \lesssim 0.3$ Gyr because stellar dust production dominates the total dust abundance. The 2175 \AA\ bump and far-ultraviolet (FUV) rise become prominent after dust growth by accretion. At $t \gtrsim 3$ Gyr, shattering works efficiently in the outer disc and low density regions, so extinction curves show a very strong 2175 \AA\ bump and steep FUV rise. The extinction curves at $t\gtrsim 3$ Gyr are consistent with the Milky Way extinction curve, which implies that we successfully included the necessary dust processes in the model. The outer disc component caused by stellar feedback has an extinction curves with a weaker 2175 \AA\ bump and flatter FUV slope. The strong contribution of carbonaceous dust tends to underproduce the FUV rise in the Small Magellanic Cloud extinction curve, which supports selective loss of small carbonaceous dust in the galaxy. We aim at constraining the dust mass in high-redshift ($z\gtrsim 5$) galaxies using the upper limits obtained by ALMA in combination with the rest-frame UV--optical spectral energy distributions (SEDs). For SED fitting, because of degeneracy between dust extinction and stellar age, we focus on two extremes: continuous star formation (Model A) and instantaneous star formation (Model B). We apply these models to Himiko (as a representative UV-bright object) and a composite SED of $z>5$ Lyman break galaxies (LBGs). For Himiko, Model A requires a significant dust extinction, which leads to a high dust temperature $>70$ K for consistency with the ALMA upper limit. This high dust temperature puts a strong upper limit on the total dust mass $M_\mathrm{d}\lesssim 2\times 10^6$ M$_{\odot}$, and the dust mass produced per supernova (SN) $m_\mathrm{d,SN}\lesssim 0.1$ M$_{\odot}$. Such a low $m_\mathrm{d,SN}$ suggests significant loss of dust by reverse shock destruction or outflow, and implies that SNe are not the dominant source of dust at high $z$. Model B allows $M_\mathrm{d}\sim 2\times 10^7$ M$_{\odot}$ and $m_\mathrm{d,SN}\sim 0.3$ M$_{\odot}$.} We could distinguish between Models A and B if we observe Himiko at {wavelength $5$, but this only puts an upper limit for $m_\mathrm{d,SN}$ as $\sim 2$ M$_{\odot}$. We present the detection and analysis of molecular hydrogen emission toward ten interstellar regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We examined low-resolution infrared spectral maps of twelve regions obtained with the Spitzer infrared spectrograph (IRS). The pure rotational 0--0 transitions of H$_2$ at 28.2 and 17.1${\,\rm \mu m}$ are detected in the IRS spectra for ten regions. The higher level transitions are mostly upper limit measurements except for three regions, where a 3$\sigma$ detection threshold is achieved for lines at 12.2 and 8.6${\,\rm \mu m}$. The excitation diagrams of the detected H$_2$ transitions are used to determine the warm H$_2$ gas column density and temperature. The single-temperature fits through the lower transition lines give temperatures in the range $86-137\,{\rm K}$. The bulk of the excited H$_2$ gas is found at these temperatures and contributes $\sim$5-17% to the total gas mass. We find a tight correlation of the H$_2$ surface brightness with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and total infrared emission, which is a clear indication of photo-electric heating in photodissociation regions. We find the excitation of H$_2$ by this process is equally efficient in both atomic and molecular dominated regions. We also present the correlation of the warm H$_2$ physical conditions with dust properties. The warm H$_2$ mass fraction and excitation temperature show positive correlations with the average starlight intensity, again supporting H$_2$ excitation in photodissociation regions., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The discoveries of huge amounts of dust and unusual extinction curves in high-redshift quasars (z > 4) cast challenging issues on the origin and properties of dust in the early universe. In this Letter, we investigate the evolutions of dust content and extinction curve in a high-z quasar, based on the dust evolution model taking account of grain size distribution. First, we show that the Milky-Way extinction curve is reproduced by introducing a moderate fraction (~0.2) of dense molecular-cloud phases in the interstellar medium for a graphite-silicate dust model. Then we show that the peculier extinction curves in high-z quasars can be explained by taking a much higher molecular-cloud fraction (>0.5), which leads to more efficient grain growth and coagulation, and by assuming amorphous carbon instead of graphite. The large dust content in high-z quasar hosts is also found to be a natural consequence of the enhanced dust growth. These results indicate that grain growth and coagulation in molecular clouds are key processes that can increase the dust mass and change the size distribution of dust in galaxies, and that, along with a different dust composition, can contribute to shape the extinction curve., 5 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

Coreshine in dense molecular cloud cores (dense cores) is interpreted as evidence for micrometer-sized grains (referred to as very large grains, VLGs). VLGs may have a significant influence on the total dust amount and the extinction curve. We estimate the total abundance of VLGs in the Galaxy, assuming that dense cores are the site of VLG formation. We find that the VLG abundance relative to the total dust mass is roughly $\phi_\mathrm{VLG}\sim 0.01(1-\epsilon )/\epsilon (\tau_\mathrm{SF}/5\times 10^9~\mathrm{yr})^{-1} (f_\mathrm{VLG}/0.5)(t_\mathrm{shat}/10^8~\mathrm{yr})$, where $\epsilon$ is the star formation efficiency in dense cores, $\tau_\mathrm{SF}$ the timescale of gas consumption by star formation, $f_\mathrm{VLG}$ the fraction of dust mass eventually coagulated into VLGs in dense cores, and $t_\mathrm{shat}$ the lifetime of VLGs (determined by shattering). Adopting their typical values for the Galaxy, we obtain $\phi_\mathrm{VLG}\sim 0.02$--0.09. This abundance is well below the value detected in the heliosphere by Ulysses and Galileo, which means that local enhancement of VLG abundance in the solar neighborhood is required if the VLGs originate from dense cores. We also show that the effects of VLGs on the extinction curve are negligible even with the upper value of the above range, $\phi_\mathrm{VLG}\sim 0.09$. If we adopt an extreme value, $\phi_\mathrm{VLG}\sim 0.5$, close to that inferred from the above spacecraft data, the extinction curve is still in the range of the variation in Galactic extinction curves, but is not typical of the diffuse ISM., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Accepted for publication in Planetary and Space Science

We investigate the evolution of extinction curves in galaxies based on our evolution model of grain size distribution. In this model, we considered various processes: dust formation by SNe II and AGB stars, dust destruction by SN shocks in the ISM, metal accretion onto the surface of grains (referred to as grain growth), shattering and coagulation. We find that the extinction curve is flat in the earliest stage of galaxy evolution. As the galaxy is enriched with dust, shattering becomes effective to produce a large abundance of small grains ($a \la 0.01\;\mu$m). Then, grain growth becomes effective at small grain radii, forming a bump at $a \sim 10^{-3}${--}$10^{-2}\;\mu$m on the grain size distribution. Consequently, the extinction curve at ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths becomes steep, and a bump at $1/\lambda \sim 4.5\;\mu{\rm m}^{-1}\;(\lambda: \mbox{wavelength})$ on the extinction curve becomes prominent. Once coagulation becomes effective, the extinction curves become flatter, but the UV extinction remains overproduced when compared with the Milky Way extinction curve. This discrepancy can be resolved by introducing a stronger contribution of coagulation. Shattering of dust grains in the interstellar medium is a viable mechanism of small grain production in galaxies. We examine the robustness or uncertainty in the theoretical predictions of shattering. We identify $P_1$ (the critical pressure above which the deformation destroys the original lattice structures) as the most important quantity in determining the timescale of small grain production, and confirm that the same $P_1/t$ ($t$ is the duration of shattering) gives the same grain size distribution [$n(a)$, where $a$ is the grain radius] after shattering within a factor of 3. The uncertainty in the fraction of shocked material that is eventually ejected as fragments causes uncertainties in $n(a)$ by a factor of 1.3 and 1.6 for silicate and carbonaceous dust, respectively. The size distribution of shattered fragments have minor effects as long as the power index of the fragment size distribution is less than ~ 3.5, since the slope of grain size distribution $n(a)$ continuously change by shattering and becomes consistent with $n(a)\propto a^{-3.5}$. The grain velocities as a function of grain radius can have an imprint in the grain size distribution especially for carbonaceous dust. We investigate the condition for the formation of micron-sized grains in dense cores of molecular clouds. This is motivated by the detection of the mid-infrared emission from deep inside a number of dense cores, the so-called `coreshine,' which is thought to come from scattering by micron-sized grains. Based on numerical calculations of coagulation starting from the typical grain size distribution in the diffuse interstellar medium, we obtain a conservative lower limit to the time $t$ to form micron-sized grains: $t/t_\mathrm{ff}>3 (5/S) (n_\mathrm{H}/10^5 \mathrm{cm}^{-3})^{-1/4}$ (where $t_\mathrm{ff}$ is the free-fall time at hydrogen number density $n_\mathrm{H}$ in the core, and $S$ the enhancement factor to the grain-grain collision cross-section to account for non-compact aggregates). At the typical core density $n_\mathrm{H}=10^5 \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$, it takes at least a few free-fall times to form the micron-sized grains responsible for coreshine. The central star-forming regions in three blue compact dwarf galaxies (He 2-10, NGC 5253, and II Zw 40) were observed in the 340 GHz (880 micron) band at 5 arcsec resolution with the Submillimetre Array (SMA). Continuum emission associated with the central star-forming complex was detected in all these galaxies. The SMA 880 micron flux is decomposed into free-free emission and dust emission by using centimetre-wavelength data in the literature. We find that free-free emission contributes half or more of the SMA 880 micron flux in the central starbursts in those three galaxies. In spite of the dominance of free-free emission at 880 micron, the radio-to-far infrared (FIR) ratios in the central star-forming regions are not significantly higher than those of the entire systems, showing the robustness of radio-FIR relation. Based on the robustness of the radio-FIR relation, we argue that the free--free fraction in the 880 micron emission is regulated by the dust temperature. We also analyze the CO (J = 3--2) emission data. We find that CO is a good tracer of the total gas mass in solar-metallicity object He 2-10. Low-metallicity objects, NGC 5253 and II Zw 40, have apparently high star formation efficiencies; however, this may be an artifact of significant dissociation of CO in the low-metallicity environments. We perform smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of an isolated galaxy with a new treatment for dust formation and destruction. To this aim, we treat dust and metal production self-consistently with star formation and supernova feedback. For dust, we consider a simplified model of grain size distribution by representing the entire range of grain sizes with large and small grains. We include dust production in stellar ejecta, dust destruction by supernova (SN) shocks, grain growth by accretion and coagulation, and grain disruption by shattering. We find that the assumption of fixed dust-to-metal mass ratio becomes no longer valid when the galaxy is older than 0.2 Gyr, at which point the grain growth by accretion starts to contribute to the nonlinear rise of dust-to-gas ratio. As expected in our previous one-zone model, shattering triggers grain growth by accretion since it increases the total surface area of grains. Coagulation becomes significant when the galaxy age is greater than $\sim$ 1 Gyr: at this epoch the abundance of small grains becomes high enough to raise the coagulation rate of small grains. We further compare the radial profiles of dust-to-gas ratio $(\mathcal{D})$ and dust-to-metal ratio $(\mathcal{D}/Z)$ (i.e., depletion) at various ages with observational data. We find that our simulations broadly reproduce the radial gradients of dust-to-gas ratio and depletion. In the early epoch ($\lesssim 0.3$ Gyr), the radial gradient of $\mathcal{D}$ follows the metallicity gradient with $\mathcal{D}/Z$ determined by the dust condensation efficiency in stellar ejecta, while the $\mathcal{D}$ gradient is steeper than the $Z$ gradient at the later epochs because of grain growth by accretion. We present a theoretical model aimed at explaining the IRX-$��$ relation for high redshift (z >5) galaxies. Recent observations (Capak+2015; Bouwens+2016) have shown that early Lyman Break Galaxies, although characterized by a large UV attenuation (e.g. flat UV beta slopes), show a striking FIR deficit, i.e. they are "infrared-dark". This marked deviation from the local IRX-beta relation can be explained by the larger molecular gas content of these systems. While dust in the diffuse ISM attains relatively high temperatures (Td = 45 K for typical size a=0.1 um; smaller grains can reach Td = 60 K), a sizable fraction of the dust mass is embedded in dense gas, and therefore remains cold. If confirmed, the FIR deficit might represent a novel, powerful indicator of the molecular content of high-z galaxies which can be used to pre-select candidates for follow-up deep CO observations. Extinction curves, especially those in the Milky Way (MW), the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), have provided us with a clue to the dust properties in the nearby Universe. We examine whether or not these extinction curves can be explained by well known dust evolution processes. We treat the dust production in stellar ejecta, destruction in supernova shocks, dust growth by accretion and coagulation, and dust disruption by shattering. To make a survey of the large parameter space possible, we simplify the treatment of the grain size distribution evolution by adopting the `two-size approximation', in which we divide the grain population into small ($\lesssim 0.03~\mu$m) and large ($\gtrsim 0.03~\mu$m) grains. It is confirmed that the MW extinction curve can be reproduced in reasonable ranges for the time-scale of the above processes with a silicate-graphite mixture. This indicates that the MW extinction curve is a natural consequence of the dust evolution through the above processes. We also find that the same models fail to reproduce the SMC/LMC extinction curves. Nevertheless, this failure can be remedied by giving higher supernova destruction rates for small carbonaceous dust and considering amorphous carbon for carbonaceous dust; these modification fall in fact in line with previous studies. Therefore, we conclude that the current dust evolution scenario composed of the aforementioned processes is successful in explaining the extinction curves. In high-redshift ($z>5$) quasars, a large amount of dust ($\textstyle\sim 10^{8} \mathrm{M}_{\sun}$) has been observed. In order to explain the large dust content, we focus on a possibility that grain growth by the accretion of heavy elements is the dominant dust source. We adopt a chemical evolution model applicable to nearby galaxies but utilize parameters adequate to high-$z$ quasars. It is assumed that metals and dust are predominantly ejected by Type II supernovae (SNe). We have found that grain growth strongly depends on the grain size distribution. If we simply use the size distribution of grains ejected from SNe, grain growth is inefficient because of the lack of small grains (i.e.\ small surface-to-volume ratio of the dust grains). However, if we take small grain production by interstellar shattering into consideration, grain growth is efficient enough to account for the rich dust abundance in high-$z$ quasars. Our results not only confirm that grain growth is necessary to explain the large amount of dust in high-$z$ quasars, but also demonstrate that grain size distributions have a critical impact on grain growth.

Dust grains grow in interstellar clouds by accretion and coagulation. In this paper, we focus on these two grain growth processes and numerically investigate how they interplay to increase the grain radii. We show that accretion efficiently depletes grains with radii on a time-scale of 10 Myr in solar-metallicity molecular clouds. Coagulation also occurs on a similar time-scale, but accretion is more efficient in producing a large bump in the grain size distribution. Coagulation further pushes the grains to larger sizes after a major part of the gas-phase metals are used up. Similar grain sizes are achieved by coagulation regardless of whether accretion takes place or not; in this sense, accretion and coagulation modify the grain size distribution independently. The increase of the total dust mass in a cloud is also investigated. We show that coagulation slightly ‘suppresses’ dust mass growth by accretion but that this effect is slight enough to be neglected in considering the grain mass budget in galaxies. Finally, we examine how accretion and coagulation affect the extinction curve: the ultraviolet slope and the carbon bump are enhanced by accretion, while they are flattened by coagulation.

The central star-forming region in a blue compact dwarf galaxy, II Zw 40, was observed in the 340 GHz ($880 \micron$) band at $\sim 5$ arcsec (250 pc) resolution with the Submillimetre Array (SMA). A source associated with the central star-forming complex was detected with a flux of $13.6\pm 2.0$ mJy. The structure is more extended than the beam in the east-west direction. The SMA 880 $\micron$ flux is analyzed by using theoretical models of radio spectral energy distribution along with centimetre interferometric measurements in the literature. We find (i) that the SMA 880 $\micron$ flux is dominated ($\sim 75$ per cent) by free-free emission from the central compact star-forming region, and (ii) that the contribution from dust emission to the SMA 880 $\micron$ flux is at most $4\pm 2.5$ mJy. We also utilize our models to derive the radio--FIR relation of the II Zw 40 centre, suggesting that free-free absorption at low frequencies ($\nu\la$ several GHz; $\lambda\ga$ several cm) and spatial extent of dust affect the radio-FIR relation.
