In mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC), the most common salivary gland carcinoma, there is a lack of novel prognostic markers, but post-operative early recurrence strongly affects the clinical course and a poor outcome. It is critical to predict which MEC patients are prone to develop recurrence/metastases. Mucins play pivotal roles in influencing cancer biology, thus affecting cell differentiation, adhesion, carcinoma invasion, aggressiveness and/or metastatic potential. Our aim is to elucidate the significance of expression profiles for mucins, particularly MUC4 and MUC6, and their correlations with various clinicopathological features and recurrence in salivary gland MECs. We performed immunohistochemical analyses on patients with surgically resected primary MEC using antibodies against mucin core proteins MUC4/8G7 and MUC6/CLH5 in 73 paraffin-embedded samples. Mucins play pivotal roles in influencing cancer biology, for example affecting carcinoma invasion, aggressiveness and/or metastatic potential. Our aim is to investigate the significance of expression profiles of two mucins in particular, MUC1 and MUC2, their correlations with various clinicopathological features, and prognosis in gallbladder adenocarcinoma (GBAC). We performed immunohistochemistry from patients with surgically resected GBAC, using antibodies against mucin core proteins MUC1/DF3 and MUC2/Ccp58 in 81 paraffin-embedded tumor samples. MUC1 or MUC2 expression was considered to be high when ≥20% or 10% of the GBAC cells showed positive staining, respectively. High MUC1 expression was revealed to have a significant relationship to the presence of pathologically lymphatic and vascular invasion, and regional lymph node metastasis. By contrast, high MUC2 expression showed a significant correlation with pathologically perineural invasion, T stage ≥3, and post-operative recurrence. Moreover, MUC1 showed significantly positive co-expression and potentially complementary correlations with MUC2. Multivariate analyses demonstrated that the high MUC1 expression group had significantly shorter diseasespecific survival times. However, the combination of both high MUC1 and MUC2 expression did not predict worse outcome in GBACs. Therefore, although each mucin has a somewhat important role in the pathogenesis of GBAC progression, MUC1 can independently predict vessel invasion and poor prognosis in patients with GBAC. The detection of MUC1 might well offer a useful parameter for providing clinical management and treatment against postsurgical GBACs.

We aimed to investigate the potentiality of atelocollagen, a new embolic agent which is collagen type I in a porcine experimental model.Three pigs underwent transcatheter embolization of lower interlobular arteries of the renal artery (n=6) and one branch of the hepatic artery (n=3) with collagen type I. Angiography was performed prearterial, during, and postarterial embolization. After the procedure, samples from the embolized organs were evaluated by histological analysis.Six lower interlobular renal arteries and three hepatic arteries were successfully embolized by administration of 0.8±0.3 mL and 2.9±1.2 mL, respectively, of the collagen type I. Histological findings of the embolized kidney specimens showed that the collagenous materials filled the arterial lumen, whose size ranged from 2.02 to 839.82 μm and reached the level of afferent arteries of glomerular tufts. Although the area of occluded arteries of the liver was smaller than the kidney, histological findings of the liver specimens showed that the collagenous materials filled small arterial lumens from 2.81 to 187.86 μm in diameter.Atelocollagen, a collagen type I, has the potential to be used to embolize the distal vessels of both renal and hepatic arteries.

In order to see whether Thymidine phosphorylase (TP)-positive lymphomas exist and whether there is relation between overexpression of TP and HTLV-1 infection, overexpression of TP/Platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor (PD-ECGF) was examined in 59 cases of malignant lymphomas (ML) by means of Elite avidin-biotin complex method employing anti-TP monoclonal antibody. The 59 cases of ML comprised 20 nodal peripheral T-cell lymphomas (npT-ML), 10 extranodal peripheral T-cell lymphomas (epT-ML)，18 B-cell lymphomas (B-ML)，10 Hodgkin's diseases (HD), and one true histiocytic lymphoma. Fifteen cases of peripheral T-ceII lymphoma (pT-ML) including TP-positive cases, which were mentioned below, were examined in a point of HTLV-1 proviral DNA integration by means of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and in a point of expression of HTLV-1 Tax preotein by means of modified ImmunoMax employing anti-HTLV-1 Tax monoclonal antibody， WATM-1. Only in three cases of epT-ML, TP-positive lymphoma cells were recognized. The three TP-positive epT-MLs were of ATLL expressing HTLV-1 Tax, as the most cases of ATLL did. Considering long survival time and smoldering clinical course in spite of high grade histology, two cases of the TP-positive ATLL in the skin might be of an unique clinical entity of ATLL and suggested that overexpression of TP in ATLL was a favorable feature. In the MLs other than the TP-positive ATLL, TP-positive cells were dominantly dendritic cells (DC) including lymphoid dendritic cells (LDC), Langerhans cells (LC), veiled cell (VC) and interdigitating dendritic cells (IDC). It was not clear that follicular dendritic cells (FDC) were positive for TP, although one case of B-ML associated many TP-positive dendritic cells. TP-positive LDCs were seen dominantly in T-zone lymphoma, B-MLs and in HD lymphocytic predominance. TP-positive IDCs forming mesh-like reticular work were noted in AILD type, pleomorphic type and anaplastic large cell type of pT-ML and HD mixed cellularity and lymphocytic depletion. In three cases of B-ML increase of spindle cells revealing nuclear stain of TP was noted. Epithelioid cells in T-cell lymphoepithelioid cell lymphoma and in MATL type B-cell lymphoma were positive for TP. Only in one case of 10 AILD type npT-ML endothelial cells were positive for TP. Most DCs and epithelioid cells were labeled by TP so that TP may be a lineage marker of T-cell associated DC. On the other hand, the cytoplasmic TP in IDC forming mesh-like reticular work in AILD type, high-grade pT-MLs and HD would be induced under cytokines from lymphoma cells and suggested TP's effects on developing processes of IDC.
