1. Validating Farmland Biodiversity Life Cycle Assessment at the Landscape Scale

Abstract: Life cycle assessment (LCA) aims at providing standardizedevaluationsof processes involving resource use, human health, and environmentalconsequences. Currently, spatial dependencies are most often neglected,though they are essential for impact categories like biodiversity.The "Swiss Agricultural Life Cycle Assessment for Biodiversity(SALCA-BD)" evaluates the impact of agricultural field managementon 11 indicator species groups. We tested if its performance can beimproved by accounting for the spatial context of the individual fields.We used high-resolution bird/butterfly point observations in two agriculturalregions in Switzerland and built linear mixed models to compare SALCA-BDscores to the observed species richness at the field/landscape scale.We calculated a set of landscape metrics, tested their relationshipwith the landscape-model prediction errors, and then added all significantmetrics as additional predictors to the landscape models. Our resultsshow that field-scale SALCA-BD scores were significantly related tothe observed field-scale richness for both indicator groups. However,the performance decreased when aggregated to the landscape scale,with high variability between regions. Adding specific landscape metricsimproved the landscape model for birds but not for butterflies. Abstract: Mit einjährigen Blühstreifen möchte man die Trachtlücke für Bienen und weitere Bestäuber zwischen Ende Mai und Ende Juli verkleinern und natürliche Gegenspieler von landwirtschaftlichen Schädlingen in die Kulturen locken und ernähren. Für die Etablierung eines optimalen Blühstreifens spielen nebst Mischungsgestaltung und Standorteinflüssen auch die Erfahrungen der Landwirtinnen und Landwirte eine wichtige Rolle. Seit 2015 führen Agroscope, FiBL und HAFL deshalb eine Umfrage in Form eines Fragebogens durch, in welchem die Teilnehmenden Angaben über ihre praktischen Erfahrungen mit Blühstreifen machen. Bis Ende 2020 wurden 299 Fragebogen zu Bestäuberblühstreifen (BBS) eingesendet und ausgewertet. Die Anlage eines BBS erfolgte bei den meisten Befragten mit dem Ziel, Bestäuber und andere Nützlinge zu fördern, Schädlinge zu reduzieren und die Attraktivität für Spaziergänger zu erhöhen. Die persönlichen Beobachtungen der Landwirtinnen und Landwirte zeigten ein positives Bild: Die Mehrheit der BBS lief gut auf, verursachte einen vertretbaren Unkrautdruck sowie einen mässigen Pflegeaufwand und wies eine hohe Abundanz an Blüten und Insekten auf. Die meisten Teilnehmenden waren mit ihrem BBS zufrieden und würden erneut einen solchen anlegen. Einzig die tiefe Beratungsquote und die oftmals suboptimale Auswahl der Saatmischung haben Verbesserungspotential.

Abstract: Floral plantings are promoted to foster ecological intensification of agriculture through provisioning of ecosystem services. However, a comprehensive assessment of the effectiveness of different floral plantings, their characteristics and consequences for crop yield is lacking. Here we quantified the impacts of flower strips and hedgerows on pest control (18 studies) and pollination services (17 studies) in adjacent crops in North America, Europe and New Zealand. Flower strips, but not hedgerows, enhanced pest control services in adjacent fields by 16% on average. However, effects on crop pollination and yield were more variable. Our synthesis identifies several important drivers of variability in effectiveness of plantings: pollination services declined exponentially with distance from plantings, and perennial and older flower strips with higher flowering plant diversity enhanced pollination more effectively. These findings provide promising pathways to optimise floral plantings to more effectively contribute to ecosystem service delivery and ecological intensification of agriculture in the future.

8. Moderne Agroforstsysteme in der Schweiz

Abstract: Agroforstsysteme, die Kombination von Gehölzen und landwirtschaftlicher Nutzung auf der gleichen Fläche, haben als Hochstamm-Feldobst (= Streuobst), Waldweiden und Kastanienselven eine lange Tradition in der Schweiz. In den letzten Jahren wurden die Systeme in moderner Form reaktiviert, d.h. ihr Pflanzdesign wurde an die Mechanisierung angepasst und ihr Management optimiert. Neben der Diversifizierung der Produktion durch zusätzliche Obst- oder Wertholzproduktion, profitiert die Landwirtschaft bei standortangepasster Strauch- und Baumarten-Wahl ebenfalls durch erhöhte Resilienz sowie Beiträgen zum Umwelt- und Ressourcenschutz. Die zukünftige Schweizer Agrarpolitik (AP22+) hat sich ambitionierte Ziele gesetzt: Reduktion der Umweltbelastung, höhere Wertschöpfung durch stärkere Marktausrichtung sowie Erhöhung der betrieblichen Effizienz. Doch wie vielerorts in Europa sieht sich auch die Schweiz mit steigenden Umweltbelastungen (Nitratüberschuss, Biodiversitätsverluste, etc.) durch landwirtschaftliche Tätigkeiten konfrontiert. Dies verbindend geht die vorliegende Studie folgenden Fragen nach: in welchen Regionen finden sich erhöhte landwirtschaftliche Umweltbelastungen? Und welche Agroforstsysteme können einen Beitrag zur Verbesserung dieser negativeren Umweltwirkungen leisten? Basierend auf elf Umwelt-Indikatoren aus den Bereichen Biodiversität, Landschaft, Klima, Luft, Wasser, sowie Boden wurden zunächst individuelle Defizit-Karten erstellt und diese anschließend räumlich überlagert. Daraus resultiert: Rund 17,8 % der untersuchten Fläche befindet sich hinsichtlich der berücksichtigten Indikatoren in einem guten Zustand. Hingegen häufen sich auf 13,3 % der landwirtschaftlichen Nutzfläche drei oder mehr Defizite. Agroforstsysteme bieten aufgrund ihrer vielfältigen Ausgestaltungs- und Einsatzmöglichkeiten ein hohes Lösungspotenzial sowohl im Ackerbau, der Tierhaltung als auch in Sonderkulturen wie Obst- und Weinbau. Landnutzern und Entscheidungsträgern bieten die vorliegenden Ergebnisse die Möglichkeit, lokal-auftretende Defizite einerseits zu adressieren und andererseits mit weiteren standörtlichen und naturschutzfachlichen Gegebenheiten bzw. Zielsetzungen zusammenzufügen. Abstract: Elucidating the diets of insect predators is important in basic and applied ecology, such as for improving the effectiveness of conservation biological control measures to promote natural enemies of crop pests. Here, we investigated the aphid diet of two common aphid predators in Central European agroecosystems, the native Coccinella septempunctata (Linnaeus) and the invasive Harmonia axyridis (Pallas; Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) by means of high throughput sequencing (HTS). For acquiring insights into diets of mobile flying insects at landscape scale minimizing trapping bias is important, which imposes methodological challenges for HTS. We therefore assessed the suitability of three field sampling methods (sticky traps, pan traps and hand-collection) as well as new aphid primers for identifying aphid prey consumption by coccinellids through HTS. The new aphid primers facilitate identification to species level in 75% of the European aphid genera investigated. Aphid primer specificity was high in silico and in vitro but low in environmental samples with the methods used, although this could be improved in future studies. For insect trapping we conclude that sticky traps are a suitable method in terms of minimizing sampling bias, contamination risk and trapping success, but compromise on DNA-recovery rate. The aphid diets of both field-captured ladybird species were dominated by Microlophium carnosum, the common nettle aphid. Another common prey was Sitobion avenae (cereal aphid), which got more often detected in C. septempunctata compared to H. axyridis. Around one third of the recovered aphid taxa were common crop pests. 12. Differential effects of habitat isolation and landscape composition on wasps, bees, and their enemies

Abstract: Habitat loss and fragmentation are major threats to biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Effects of these usually intercorrelated processes on biodiversity have rarely been separated at a landscape scale. We studied the independent effects of amount of woody habitat in the landscape and three levels of isolation from the next woody habitat (patch isolation) on trap nesting bees, wasps, and their enemies at 30 farmland sites in the Swiss plateau. Species richness of wasps was negatively affected by patch isolation and positively affected by the amount of woody habitat in the landscape. In contrast, species richness of bees was neither influenced by patch isolation nor by landscape composition. Isolation from woody habitats reduced species richness and abundance of natural enemies more strongly than of their hosts, so that parasitism rate was lowered by half in isolated sites compared to forest edges. Thus, population regulation of the hosts may be weakened by habitat fragmentation. We conclude that habitat amount at the landscape scale and local patch connectivity are simultaneously important for biodiversity conservation

Abstract: International audience; To evaluate progress on political biodiversity objectives, biodiversity monitoring provides information on whether intended results are being achieved. Despite scientific proof that monitoring and evaluation increase the (cost) efficiency of policy measures, cost estimates for monitoring schemes are seldom available, hampering their inclusion in policy programme budgets. Empirical data collected from 12 case studies across Europe were used in a power analysis to estimate the number of farms that would need to be sampled per major farm type to detect changes in species richness over time for four taxa (vascular plants, earthworms, spiders and bees). A sampling design was developed to allocate spatially, across Europe, the farms that should be sampled. Cost estimates are provided for nine monitoring scenarios with differing robustness for detecting temporal changes in species numbers. These cost estimates are compared with the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) budget (2014-2020) to determine the budgetallocation required for the proposed farmland biodiversity monitoring. Results show that the bee indicator requires the highest number of farms to be sampled and the vascular plant indicator the lowest. The costs for the nine farmland biodiversity monitoring scenarios corresponded to 001%-074% of the total CAP budget and to 004%-248% of the CAP budget specifically allocated to environmental targets.Synthesis and applications. The results of the cost scenarios demonstrate that, based on the taxa and methods used in this study, a Europe-wide farmland biodiversity monitoring scheme would require a modest share of the Common Agricultural Policy budget. The monitoring scenarios are flexible and can be adapted or complemented with alternate data collection options (e.g. at national scale or voluntary efforts), data mobilization, data integration or modelling efforts. Abstract: International audience; Land-use change and intensification threaten bee populations worldwide, imperilling pollination services. Global models are needed to better characterise, project, and mitigate bees' responses to these human impacts. The available data are, however, geographically and taxonomically unrepresentative; most data are from North America and Western Europe, overrepresenting bumblebees and raising concerns that model results may not be generalizable to other regions and taxa. To assess whether the geographic and taxonomic biases of data could undermine effectiveness of models for conservation policy, we have collated from the published literature a global dataset of bee diversity at sites facing land-use change and intensification, and assess whether bee responses to these pressures vary across 11 regions (Western, Northern, Eastern and Southern Europe; North, Central and South America; Australia and New Zealand; South East Asia; Middle and Southern Africa) and between bumblebees and other bees. Our analyses highlight strong regionally-based responses of total abundance, species richness and Simpson's diversity to land use, caused by variation in the sensitivity of species and potentially in the nature of threats. These results suggest that global extrapolation of models based on geographically and taxonomically restricted data may underestimate the true uncertainty, increasing the risk of ecological surprises.

Abstract: International audience; Habitat fragmentation is a major threat for beneficial organisms and the ecosystem services they provide. Multiple-habitat users such as wild bees depend on both nesting and foraging habitat. Thus, they may be affected by the fragmentation of at least two habitat types. We investigate the effects of landscape-scale amount of and patchisolation fromboth nesting habitat (woody plants) and foraging habitats (specific pollen sources) on the abundance and diet of Osmia bicornis L. Trap-nests of O. bicornis were studied in 30 agricultural landscapes of the Swiss Plateau. Nesting and foraging habitats were mapped in a radius of 500 m around the sites. Pollen composition of larval diet changed as isolation to the main pollen source, Ranunculus, increased, suggesting that O. bicornis adapted its foraging strategy in function of the nest proximity to mainpollensources.Abundance of O. bicornis was neither related to isolation or amount of nesting habitat nor to isolation or abundance of food plants. Surprisingly, nests of O. bicornis contained fewer larvae in sites at forest edge compared to isolated sites, possibly due to higher parasitism risk. This study indicates that O. bicornis can nest in a variety of situations by compensatingscarcity of its main larval food by exploiting alternative food sources.

Abstract: This dataset contains site-level summaries of more than 1.6 million samples from 78 countries representing over 28,000 species, collated from existing spatial comparisons of local-scale biodiversity exposed to different intensities and types of anthropogenic pressures, from terrestrial sites around the world. Abstract: National audience; In the framework of the European project BIOBIO, we compared between countries habitat and cumulated species richnesses of plants, wild bees, spiders and earthworms, measured in 169 conventional and organic farms belonging to 10 case studies in 10 European countries. For the French case study (Gascony Valleys and Hills), correlations between direct (habitat and taxonomic richnesses) and indirect (agricultural practices) indicators of biodiversity within 8 conventional and 8 organic farms, were calculated. Results showed that the main driver of biodiversity at the farm level was the number of cultivated and above all semi-natural habitats, inthe French case study region as well as inthe other regions. This factor partially explained the highest biodiversity level of the French case study region. However, farming practices, specific or not to the organic and conventional systems, most often drove biodiversity parameters at the habitat level. In fine, the project proposed the BIOBIO method for monitoring biodiversity in farms.; Dans le cadre du projet européen BIOBIO, nous avons comparé entre pays les richesses en habitats et richesses spécifiques cumulées de quatre groupes taxonomiques (plantes, abeilles sauvages, araignées, vers de terre), de 169 exploitations biologiques ou conventionnelles appartenant à 10 pays. Pour le cas d’étude français, Vallées et Coteaux de Gascogne, les corrélations entre indicateurs directs (richesses spécifiques des taxons et habitats) et indirects (pratiques agricoles) de biodiversité, relevés dans 8 exploitations conventionnelles et 8 biologiques, ont été recherchées. Les résultats montrent que le nombre d’habitats cultivés et surtout semi-naturels par exploitation est le principal facteur déterminant le niveau de biodiversité à cette échelle, pour le cas d’étude français comme pour les autres cas d’étude. Ce facteur explique en partie le plus haut niveau de biodiversité observé pour le cas d’étude français. Néanmoins, les pratiques, spécifiques ou non des modes de production biologique et conventionnelle, gouvernent généralement les paramètres de biodiversité à l’échelle de l’habitat. In fine, le projet propose la méthode BIOBIO de suivi de la biodiversité dans les exploitations agricoles.

Abstract: 1993 führte der Bund ökologische Direktzahlungen ein; seit 1999 ist die Erbringung des ökologischen Leistungsnachweises (ÖLN) durch die Landwirtschaftsbetriebe die Voraussetzung zum Bezug von Direktzahlungen. Heute werden 97 % der landwirtschaftlichen Nutzfläche nach den Regeln des ÖLN bewirtschaftet. Die wichtigste Massnahme des ÖLN, welche einen Einfluss auf die Biodiversität hat, ist, dass die Betriebe 7 % ihrer landwirtschaftlichen Nutzfläche (LN) als ökologische Ausgleichsflächen (öAF) auszuweisen haben (bei Spezialkulturen 3,5 %). Weitere Anforderungen des ÖLN (ausgeglichene Nährstoffbilanz, geregelte Fruchtfolge, Bodenschutz, gezielter Einsatz von Pflanzenschutzmitteln, tiergerechte Haltung der Nutztiere) können ebenfalls einen Einfluss haben, stehen jedoch weniger im Vordergrund.

Abstract: Genetic variability is the fundament of life. Large genetic variability within species is the basis for adaptation to changing environmental conditions. Farmers and breeders have developed a multitude of crop cultivars and animal breeds to stabilize and increase quality and productivity. This study evaluated genetic diversity within different organic and non-organic farming systems using crop-cultivar and livestock-breed information as simple indicators. Data was collected using on-farm surveys in 15 case study regions in Europe and beyond. Selected indicators revealed strong differences of cultivar diversity between different countries and farming systems across Europe. No or only small differences were detectable between organic and non-organic farming systems. Landraces, as on-farm genetic resources, were under-represented in European case study regions.

Abstract: One of the aims of organic farming is the protection of biodiversity. In the EU FP7 project BioBio, we studied the effect of organic farming on species numbers at farm level on 169 randomly selected organic and non-organic farms with mostly low to medium intensity in ten European regions. Using a preferential sampling scheme based on habitat mapping, numbers of plants, earthworms, spiders and bees were assessed at farm level. A global analysis across the ten regions shows that organic farms have significantly higher numbers of plant and bee species than non-organic farms. The effect of organic farming on earthworm and spider species numbers are also positive but insignificant. The effects in absolute terms are small and much smaller than the variation between individual farms. Currently ongoing analyses aim at identifying the important driving factors for farmland biodiversity.

Abstract: Organic and low-input farming systems provide habitats for wildlife on farmland. The EU FP7 project BIOBIO has identified a core set of 23 indicators relating to the diversity of habitats, of species, of crops and of livestock. Management indicators capturing the pressure on biodiversity are also proposed. The indicators were identified in an iterative process between scientists and stake-holders to make sure that they are not only scientifically sound but also practicable and attractive. They were tested in 12 case study regions on four major farm types. Allocating 0.25 % of the CAP budget to a farm scale biodiversity monitoring would allow to measure and analyse the indicators on 50,000 farms across Europe.

Abstract: Farming practices are the key to maintaining and restoring farmland biodiversity. Selected farm management indicators, regarded as scientifically sound, practicable and attractive to stakeholders, were tested against species indicators in various farm types in 12 case studies across Europe. A set of eight farm management indicators is recommended, reflecting the pressure on biodiversity by farm management via energy and nutrient input, mechanical operations, pesticide use and livestock.

Results showed that the main driver of biodiversity at the farm level was the number of cultivated and above all semi-natural habitats, inthe French case study region as well as inthe other regions. This factor partially explained the highest biodiversity level of the French case study region. However, farming practices, specific or not to the organic and conventional systems, most often drove biodiversity parameters at the habitat level. In fine, the project proposed the BIOBIO method for monitoring biodiversity in farms.; Dans le cadre du projet européen BIOBIO, nous avons comparé entre pays les richesses en habitats et richesses spécifiques cumulées de quatre groupes taxonomiques (plantes, abeilles sauvages, araignées, vers de terre), de 169 exploitations biologiques ou conventionnelles appartenant à 10 pays. Pour le cas d’étude français, Vallées et Coteaux de Gascogne, les corrélations entre indicateurs directs (richesses spécifiques des taxons et habitats) et indirects (pratiques agricoles) de biodiversité, relevés dans 8 exploitations conventionnelles et 8 biologiques, ont été recherchées. Les résultats montrent que le nombre d’habitats cultivés et surtout semi-naturels par exploitation est le principal facteur déterminant le niveau de biodiversité à cette échelle, pour le cas d’étude français comme pour les autres cas d’étude. Ce facteur explique en partie le plus haut niveau de biodiversité observé pour le cas d’étude français. Néanmoins, les pratiques, spécifiques ou non des modes de production biologique et conventionnelle, gouvernent généralement les paramètres de biodiversité à l’échelle de l’habitat. In fine, le projet propose la méthode BIOBIO de suivi de la biodiversité dans les exploitations agricoles.

Abstract: International audience; One of the aims of organic farming is the protection of biodiversity. In the EU FP7 project BioBio, we studied the effect of organic farming on species numbers at farm level on 169 randomly selected organic and non-organic farms with mostly low to medium intensity in ten European regions. Using a preferential sampling scheme based on habitat mapping, numbers of plants, earthworms, spiders and bees were assessed at farm level. A global analysis across the ten regions shows that organic farms have significantly higher numbers of plant and bee species than non-organic farms. The effect of organic farming on earthworm and spider species numbers are also positive but insignificant. The effects in absolute terms are small and much smaller than the variation between individual farms. Currently ongoing analyses aim at identifying the important driving factors for farmland biodiversity.

Abstract: About one-third of the world’s land surface is used for farming, a fact that bears important implications for biodiversity. In Europe, for instance, an estimated 50 percent of all wild species are reliant on agricultural habitats, while agricultural productivity often depends on the presence or absence of particular species. Despite this close coupling, surprisingly little is known about the status and evolution of farmland biodiversity. A team of European and African researchers, hoping to fill this gap in information, recently invented and piloted a new toolbox called the BioBio indicator set, which measures 23 different instances of biodiversity across a variety of farm types and scales in Europe. Applications were also tested in Tunisia, Ukraine, and Uganda, where they proved a feasible starting point for adaptation to the agricultural context of different countries.

Abstract: International audience; INRA has released the results of a multidisciplinary scientific assessment on the relationships between agriculture and biodiversity. Commissioned by the French ministries of agriculture and ecology, the assessment should be seen against the backdrop of a global challenge - stemming the loss of biodiversity – and approaching deadlines for national and European environmental and agricultural policies. The assessment describes the current wisdom on the impact of agriculture on biodiversity, as well as the services that biodiversity can render to agricultural production processes. It explores possibilities that would allow better integration of biodiversity in agricultural practices and reviews the different tools for public action; Que sait-on aujourd'hui des impacts, positifs et négatifs, de l’agriculture sur la biodiversité ? Quels services la biodiversité peut-elle apporter à l’agriculture, et à quelle hauteur de performance ? Comment favoriser au champ les synergies entre agriculture et biodiversité ? Commissioned by the French ministries of agriculture and ecology, the assessment should be seen against the backdrop of a global challenge - stemming the loss of biodiversity – and approaching deadlines for national and European environmental and agricultural policies. The assessment describes the current wisdom on the impact of agriculture on biodiversity, as well as the services that biodiversity can render to agricultural production processes. Abstract: This Handbook describes the methods required to measure the direct and indirect indicators of biodiversity in the field or through farmer interviews on organic, low-input and conventional (control) farms during 2010. It is the result of editing and revision of the BIOBIO deliverable D2.2. A total of twelve Case Study regions were selected in eleven countries. A standard habitat mapping procedure for the European scale based on General Habitat Categories (GHCs) was applied. This method has been adapted further to deal with the assessment of organic/low-input farm holdings. An initial classification of farmed and non-farmed land has been used to direct the selection of the samples. After mapping the farm area, in each habitat type selected for flora and fauna surveys, all species indicators were sampled for vegetation, earthworms, bees and spiders. Farm practices and genetic diversity were measured through interviews with the farmer. A digitising protocol was provided to prepare all data for analysis. The practicality and suitability of these methods for sampling plants and selected animals on very different farm types and habitats was evaluated. Lessons learned are described shortly after each chapter indicating difficulties encountered during the field work and giving practical suggestions. Further reports will be available in due course presenting the implication of analyses and results. The cost efficiency of the methodology was measured through reports on input of staff time and materials

Abstract: Farmland biodiversity is an important component of Europe’s biodiversity. More than half the continent is occupied by agricultural lands. They host specific habitats and species, which – in addition to their conservation values they provide – perform vital ecological functions. Indicators are needed to enable the monitoring of biodiversity at the farm level for the purpose of assessing the impacts of farming practices and of agricultural policies. Our research aims at identifying farmland biodiversity indicators which are scientifically sound, operational and relevant for stakeholders. We screened the literature for farmland biodiversity indicators and, in an iterative process with stakeholders, we identified 28 candidate indicators for genetic, species and habitat diversity. Those selected biodiversity indicators, as well as 14 management indicators that are known to relate to biodiversity, were assessed in 12 case study regions across Europe. Each case study region represents a typical production system (i.e. specialist field crops, horticulture and permanent crops; specialist grazing with cattle and other livestock types; mixed crop and livestock farming). In each region, 8 – 20 farms were randomly selected, mostly within the two groups of organic and non-organic farms, to obtain a gradient of farming intensity. Indicators were measured applying standardized sampling procedures and farm interviews. Sampling effort was recorded in order to assess the cost of indicator measurement. For each case study region, biodiversity indicators are presently being evaluated in conjunction with management indicators. Surrogate indicators will be proposed when possible and indicators will be prioritized taking into account their validity, practicality, cost and priority for stakeholders. Based on preliminary results, the presentation will focus on the specific challenges of farm level monitoring, addressing issues of sampling design within the farms and up-scaling from plot to farm to region.

44. Intensity in Low-Input Farms and Development of Indicators for Biodiversity

Abstract: Biodiversity conservation is an urgent task for our society with special attention for grassland areas. The EU FP7 research project BIOBIO – INDICATORS FOR BIODIVERSITY IN ORGANIC AND LOW-INPUT FARMING SYSTEMS aims at developing scientifically sound, useful and attractive biodiversity indicators for organic and low-input farming in Europe. The Bulgarian case study region in the project is presented by low-input farming in grasslands in the Rhodopi mountains. preliminary selection of 16 low-input farms in Bulgaria for a detailed assessment of biodiversity indicators is carried out. The socio-economic components, environmental factors and partially management intensity have been outlined in order to find farms covering a reliable scale of low-input farming. Three main groups of factors and conditions are implemented for developing an appropriate model for scaling: general socio-economic factors, non-enterprise specific socio-economic conditions, enterprise specific socio-economic conditions. The summarized effect of evaluated factors and conditions is presented by the farm intensity index. The developed model allows preliminary differentiation of farms in three main groups of intensity. A reliable scaling of farms prior to detailed assessment of indicators for biodiversity in low-input grasslands has been confirmed scientifically.

Abstract: Cette Expertise Scientifique Collective (ESCo), réalisée à la demande des ministères de l’agriculture et de l’écologie, intervient dans un contexte marqué par un très fort intérêt porté à la biodiversité, désormais considérée comme un enjeu d’importance majeure. Cet intérêt est né du constat de la perte actuelle de biodiversité (liée, entre autres, à l’activité agricole), de la prise de conscience de ses rôles multiples (ressources génétiques potentielles, services écologiques à valeur marchande ou non, capacité d’autorégulation des agro-écosystèmes…) et des réflexions sur la conception de nouvelles manières de produire pour faire face aux enjeux futurs (baisse de l’emploi des pesticides, adaptation des systèmes au changement climatique, diminution de l’utilisation de carburants fossiles…) qui font une part importante à la biodiversité, élément majeur des capacités d'adaptation des agroécosystèmes. Les spécificités de la problématique biodiversité dans le domaine agricole, parmi l’ensemble des secteurs d’activité, l’agriculture entretient des interrelations étroites avec la biodiversité, dont elle peut bénéficier, qu’elle peut modifier, et qu’elle peut contribuer à maintenir. Pour l’agriculture, la biodiversité est ainsi objet d’un intérêt croissant à tous les niveaux de l’action publique. L'activité agricole implique généralement d’orienter et contrôler les biocénoses des zones qu'elle exploite. La question des relations entre agriculture et biodiversité est donc souvent posée en termes de compromis ou de cohabitations. Mais l’agriculture est également susceptible d’avoir des effets bénéfiques sur la biodiversité à différentes échelles et différents niveaux d’organisation. Plus encore, les bénéfices pour l'agriculture du maintien de la biodiversité peuvent être nombreux, pour la production agricole au sens large, via les "services écosystémiques" rendus au sein des espaces agricoles. Actualité politique de la demande d’expertise. Lors de la commande de l'ESCo, début 2007, plusieurs échéances politiques étaient annoncées : au plan européen, la renégociation de la PAC autour de la conditionnalité des aides publiques à l’agriculture et les discussions sur la définition des objectifs pour arrêter la perte de biodiversité dans le cadre de la Convention internationale sur la diversité biologique (CDB). En France, l’actualité était également forte avec la mise en œuvre de la Stratégie nationale pour la biodiversité et en particulier de son volet Agriculture, la révision de la première programmation du plan sectoriel "Agriculture" de la Stratégie nationale pour la biodiversité, la révision à mi-parcours du nouveau PDRH et l’adaptation des MAE nationales après leur première mise en œuvre sur 2007, ainsi que la préparation de la 9e Conférence des parties (COP 9) de la CDB, en mai 2008, qui a procédé à l'examen approfondi du volet agriculture. Depuis, l’actualité politique de ces questions s'est encore renforcée, avec, notamment, la réflexion sur la Biodiversité engagée dans le cadre du Grenelle de l'Environnement, qui a débouché sur la création d’une fondation pour la recherche sur la biodiversité, et donné lieu à des projets en cours de réalisation, comme la mise en place de la trame verte et la stratégie nationale des aires protégées et le plan de conservation de 131 espèces en danger, dont les pollinisateurs. Par ailleurs, la France organisera en novembre 2008, sous sa présidence de l'Union européenne, un colloque scientifique international destiné aux décideurs, consacré à "Agriculture et biodiversité". Les questions posées à l’ESCo : Dans ce contexte et face à ces enjeux, les ministères en charge de l’agriculture et de l’Ecologie ont demandé à l’INRA de réaliser un état des connaissances pluridisciplinaires sur les relations existant entre agriculture et biodiversité afin de mettre à disposition de l’ensemble des acteurs tous les éléments nécessaires pour orienter les actions et les décisions. Les questions, formulées par les commanditaires dans une lettre de cadrage adressée à l’INRA, concernaient les effets de l’agriculture sur la biodiversité, les rôles et valorisations possibles de cette ESCo "Agriculture et biodiversité" 4 biodiversité pour l’agriculture, les marges de manœuvre techniques pour mieux internaliser la biodiversité dans l’agriculture, et enfin la faisabilité économique, technique et sociale de cette internalisation. Le périmètre de l’ESCo : L’expertise collective scientifique s’est focalisée sur la biodiversité ordinaire, ne considérant la biodiversité domestique que comme l’une des composantes des systèmes de production susceptible notamment d’influer sur la biodiversité non domestique. Sur le plan géographique, l’ESCo ne prend en compte que le cas de la France métropolitaine. Les milieux aquatiques, ainsi que les forêts sont exclus du champ de l’ESCo. L’expertise scientifique collective (ESCo) est une activité d’appui à la décision publique : l’exercice consiste à répondre à une question complexe posée par un commanditaire public en établissant, sur la base de la bibliographie mondiale, un état des connaissances scientifiques pluridisciplinaires qui fait la part des acquis, incertitudes, lacunes et controverses. L’ESCo ne produit pas d’études spécifiques pour répondre aux questions posées. Elle ne fournit ni avis ni recommandations, et ne comporte pas de dimension prospective. Le travail d’expertise est réalisé par un collectif de chercheurs, spécialistes de différentes disciplines et appartenant à divers organismes de recherche. Il se conclut par la production d’un rapport qui rassemble les contributions des experts et par une synthèse notamment à l’usage des décideurs. Méthode et portée de l’ESCo : les compétences nécessaires pour traiter les questions posées au sein du collectif d’experts relèvent de l’écologie, de l’agronomie, aux différents niveaux d’organisation pertinents (parcelle, exploitation, système, paysage), de l’économie, de la sociologie, du droit. Cette association de disciplines vise à intégrer des niveaux de complexité croissants, des organismes biologiques au paysage et aux structures de décision. L’ESCo a mobilisé une vingtaine d’experts d’origines institutionnelles diverses, en France (INRA, CNRS, IRD, Ecoles supérieures d’agronomie, ISARA) et à l’étranger (Agroscope et Institute of environmental sciences de Zurich, Université de Louvain la Neuve). Le travail des experts s’est appuyé sur le traitement de plus de 2500 références bibliographiques, composées d’articles scientifiques, de rapports internationaux et de documents techniques dont les experts ont extrait, analysé et assemblé les éléments utiles pour éclairer les questions posées. L’expertise est structurée en cinq parties. Elle s’ouvre sur une partie liminaire de rappel des définitions, concepts et enjeux autour du thème "agriculture et biodiversité". Le premier chapitre explore les modes d’action de l’agriculture sur la biodiversité, à travers les pratiques culturales à la parcelle, mais aussi à l’échelle du paysage (chapitre 1). Elle s’intéresse ensuite aux services rendus par la biodiversité des espaces agricoles, qui peuvent notamment contribuer à augmenter la productivité et la stabilité des agro-écosystèmes (chapitre 2). L’intégration des éléments et des services de la biodiversité utiles à l’agriculture est ensuite examinée dans le contexte des systèmes de production et de leurs contraintes (chapitre 3). Ce chapitre traite également de la question de la conversion à l’agriculture biologique. Le chapitre 4 analyse les fondements juridiques et les instruments utilisés par les Politiques publiques, il examine les résultats obtenus par les MAE et développe l’analyse des modèles possibles d’organisation et de gestion. Enfin, il aborde les conditions d’une mise en œuvre des instruments au service des politiques publiques

En France, l’actualité était également forte avec la mise en œuvre de la Stratégie nationale pour la biodiversité et en particulier de son volet Agriculture, la révision de la première programmation du plan sectoriel "Agriculture" de la Stratégie nationale pour la biodiversité, la révision à mi-parcours du nouveau PDRH et l’adaptation des MAE nationales après leur première mise en œuvre sur 2007, ainsi que la préparation de la 9e Conférence des parties (COP 9) de la CDB, en mai 2008, qui a procédé à l'examen approfondi du volet agriculture. Depuis, l’actualité politique de ces questions s'est encore renforcée, avec, notamment, la réflexion sur la Biodiversité engagée dans le cadre du Grenelle de l'Environnement, qui a débouché sur la création d’une fondation pour la recherche sur la biodiversité, et donné lieu à des projets en cours de réalisation, comme la mise en place de la trame verte et la stratégie nationale des aires protégées et le plan de conservation de 131 espèces en danger, dont les pollinisateurs. Par ailleurs, la France organisera en novembre 2008, sous sa présidence de l'Union européenne, un colloque scientifique international destiné aux décideurs, consacré à "Agriculture et biodiversité". Les questions posées à l’ESCo : Dans ce contexte et face à ces enjeux, les ministères en charge de l’agriculture et de l’Ecologie ont demandé à l’INRA de réaliser un état des connaissances pluridisciplinaires sur les relations existant entre agriculture et biodiversité afin de mettre à disposition de l’ensemble des acteurs tous les éléments nécessaires pour orienter les actions et les décisions. Les questions, formulées par les commanditaires dans une lettre de cadrage adressée à l’INRA, concernaient les effets de l’agriculture sur la biodiversité, les rôles et valorisations possibles de cette ESCo "Agriculture et biodiversité" 4 biodiversité pour l’agriculture, les marges de manœuvre techniques pour mieux internaliser la biodiversité dans l’agriculture, et enfin la faisabilité économique, technique et sociale de cette internalisation. Le périmètre de l’ESCo : L’expertise collective scientifique s’est focalisée sur la biodiversité ordinaire, ne considérant la biodiversité domestique que comme l’une des composantes des systèmes de production susceptible notamment d’influer sur la biodiversité non domestique. Sur le plan géographique, l’ESCo ne prend en compte que le cas de la France métropolitaine. Les milieux aquatiques, ainsi que les forêts sont exclus du champ de l’ESCo. L’expertise scientifique collective (ESCo) est une activité d’appui à la décision publique : l’exercice consiste à répondre à une question complexe posée par un commanditaire public en établissant, sur la base de la bibliographie mondiale, un état des connaissances scientifiques pluridisciplinaires qui fait la part des acquis, incertitudes, lacunes et controverses. L’ESCo ne produit pas d’études spécifiques pour répondre aux questions posées. Elle ne fournit ni avis ni recommandations, et ne comporte pas de dimension prospective. Le travail d’expertise est réalisé par un collectif de chercheurs, spécialistes de différentes disciplines et appartenant à divers organismes de recherche. Il se conclut par la production d’un rapport qui rassemble les contributions des experts et par une synthèse notamment à l’usage des décideurs. Méthode et portée de l’ESCo : les compétences nécessaires pour traiter les questions posées au sein du collectif d’experts relèvent de l’écologie, de l’agronomie, aux différents niveaux d’organisation pertinents (parcelle, exploitation, système, paysage), de l’économie, de la sociologie, du droit. Cette association de disciplines vise à intégrer des niveaux de complexité croissants, des organismes biologiques au paysage et aux structures de décision. L’ESCo a mobilisé une vingtaine d’experts d’origines institutionnelles diverses, en France (INRA, CNRS, IRD, Ecoles supérieures d’agronomie, ISARA) et à l’étranger (Agroscope et Institute of environmental sciences de Zurich, Université de Louvain la Neuve). Le travail des experts s’est appuyé sur le traitement de plus de 2500 références bibliographiques, composées d’articles scientifiques, de rapports internationaux et de documents techniques dont les experts ont extrait, analysé et assemblé les éléments utiles pour éclairer les questions posées. L’expertise est structurée en cinq parties. Elle s’ouvre sur une partie liminaire de rappel des définitions, concepts et enjeux autour du thème "agriculture et biodiversité". Le premier chapitre explore les modes d’action de l’agriculture sur la biodiversité, à travers les pratiques culturales à la parcelle, mais aussi à l’échelle du paysage (chapitre 1). Elle s’intéresse ensuite aux services rendus par la biodiversité des espaces agricoles, qui peuvent notamment contribuer à augmenter la productivité et la stabilité des agro-écosystèmes (chapitre 2). L’intégration des éléments et des services de la biodiversité utiles à l’agriculture est ensuite examinée dans le contexte des systèmes de production et de leurs contraintes (chapitre 3). Ce chapitre traite également de la question de la conversion à l’agriculture biologique. Le chapitre 4 analyse les fondements juridiques et les instruments utilisés par les Politiques publiques, il examine les résultats obtenus par les MAE et développe l’analyse des modèles possibles d’organisation et de gestion. Enfin, il aborde les conditions d’une mise en œuvre des instruments au service des politiques publiques

Abstract: The objective of this paper is toinvestigate the relationship between landscapepattern metrics and agricultural biodiversity atthe Temperate European scale, exploring the roleof thematic resolution and a suite of biologicaland functional groups. Factor analyses to selectlandscape-level metrics were undertaken on 25landscapes classified at four levels of thematicresolution. The landscapes were located withinseven countries. The different resolutions wereconsidered appropriate to taxonomic and functionalgroup diversity. As class-level metrics areoften better correlated to ecological response, thelandscape-level metric subsets gained throughexploratory analysis were additionally used toguide the selection of class-level metric subsets.Linear mixed models were then used to detectcorrelations between landscape- and class-levelmetrics and species richness values. Taxonomicgroups with differing requirements (plants, birds,different arthropod groups) and also functionalarthropod groups were examined. At the coarsescale of thematic resolution grain metrics (patchdensity, largest patch index) emerged as roughindicators for the different biological groupswhilst at the fine scale a diversity metric (e.g.Simpson’s diversity index) was appropriate. Theintermediate thematic resolution offered mostpromise for biodiversity monitoring. Metrics includedlargest patch index, edge density, nearestneighbour, the proximity index, circle and Simpson’sdiversity index. We suggest two possibleapplications of these metrics in the context ofbiodiversity monitoring and the identification ofbiodiversity hot spots in European agriculturallandscapes.

Abstract: International audience; 1. Agricultural intensification poses a serious threat to biodiversity as a consequence of increased land-use intensity, decreased landscape heterogeneity and reduced habitat diversity. Although there is interest in the preservation of total species richness of an agricultural landscape (γ diversity), the effects of intensification have been assessed primarily by species richness at a local scale (α diversity). This ignores species richness between local communities (β diversity), which is an important component of total species richness. 2. In this study, measures of land-use intensity, landscape structure and habitat diversity were related to γ, α and β diversity of wild bees (Apoidea), carabid beetles (Carabidae), hoverflies (Syrphidae), true bugs (Heteroptera) and spiders (Araneae) within 16 local communities in 24 temperate European agricultural landscapes. 3. The total landscape species richness of all groups was most strongly affected by increased proximity of semi-natural habitat patches. Bees also decreased in landscapes with a high intensity of farmland management, demonstrating additive effects of both factors. 4. Separating total species diversity into components, the decrease in total species richness could be attributed primarily to a decrease in species diversity between local communities. Species richness of the local communities of all investigated groups decreased with increasing land-use intensity and, in the case of spiders, decreasing proximity of the semi-natural habitat patches. 5. The effect of increased habitat diversity appeared to be of secondary importance to total species richness but caused a shift in the relative contribution of α and β diversity towards the latter.

Abstract: Our study aimed at evaluating the impacts of an agri-environment measure implemented in Swiss arable landscapes, the wild flower strips, on the diversity of arthropods (butterflies, spiders and carabid beetles). We tested whether (i) wild flower strips harbour a higher arthropod diversity than conventional fields and (ii) arthropod diversity is enhanced by wild flower strips at the landscape scale. Wild flower strips had more arthropod species and typical set of species as compared to conventional fields, but they had similar or lower activity-density of epigeic arthropods. The percentage cover of wild flower strips in the landscape context had a positive influence only on carabid assemblages, reflecting an effect of extensification measures at the landscape scale for carabid beetles. For each arthropod group, the efficiency of wild flower strips might also vary according to the presence of conventional grasslands or crop fields in the surrounding landscape.
