1. Stray magnetic field imaging of thin exfoliated iron halides flakes

Abstract: Magnetic van der Waals materials are often proposed for use in future spintronic devices, aiming to leverage the combination of long-range magnetic order and near-atomic thinness to produce energy-efficient components. One class of material that has been discussed in this context are the iron halides FeCl$_2$ and FeBr$_2$, which are A-type antiferromagnets with strong uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy. However, despite characterization of the bulk materials, the possibility for sustaining the magnetic behaviors that would underpin such applications in thin flakes has not been investigated. In this work, we use nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center microscopy to quantitatively image magnetism in individual exfoliated flakes of these iron halides, revealing the absence of magnetic remanence, a weak induced magnetization under bias field and variable behavior versus temperature. We show that our results are consistent with the antiferromagnetic behavior of the bulk material with a soft ferromagnetic uncompensated layer, indicating that extended ($>1~μ$m) ferromagnetic domains are not sustained even at low temperatures (down to 4 K). Finally, we find that the magnetic order is strongly affected by the sample preparation, with a surprising diamagnetic order observed in a thin, hydrated sample., 15 pages, 13 figures

2. Multi-species optically addressable spin defects in a van der Waals material

Abstract: Optically addressable spin defects hosted in two-dimensional van der Waals materials represent a new frontier for quantum technologies, promising to lead to a new class of ultrathin quantum sensors and simulators. Recently, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has been shown to host several types of optically addressable spin defects, thus offering a unique opportunity to simultaneously address and utilise various spin species in a single material. Here we demonstrate an interplay between two separate spin species within a single hBN crystal, namely $S=1$ boron vacancy defects and visible emitter spins. We unambiguously prove that the visible emitters are $S=\frac{1}{2}$ spins and further demonstrate room temperature coherent control and optical readout of both spin species. Importantly, by tuning the two spin species into resonance with each other, we observe cross-relaxation indicating strong inter-species dipolar coupling. We then demonstrate magnetic imaging using the $S=\frac{1}{2}$ defects, both under ambient and cryogenic conditions, and leverage their lack of intrinsic quantization axis to determine the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility of a test sample. Our results establish hBN as a versatile platform for quantum technologies in a van der Waals host at room temperature.

Abstract: Detecting magnetic noise from small quantities of paramagnetic spins is a powerful capability for chemical, biochemical, and medical analysis. Quantum sensors based on optically addressable spin defects in bulk semiconductors are typically employed for such purposes, but the 3D crystal structure of the sensor inhibits the sensitivity by limiting the proximity of the defects to the target spins. Here we demonstrate the detection of paramagnetic spins using spin defects hosted in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), a van der Waals material which can be exfoliated into the 2D regime. 4. An Existence Theorem for a Class of Wrinkling Models for Highly Stretched Elastic Sheets

Abstract: We consider a class of models motivated by previous numerical studies of wrinkling in highly stretched, thin rectangular elastomer sheets. The model used is characterized by a finite-strain hyperelastic membrane energy perturbed by small bending energy. Without bending energy, the stored-energy density is not rank-one convex for general spatial deformations but reduces to a polyconvex function when restricted to the plane, i.e., two-dimensional hyperelasticity. In addition, it grows unbounded as the local area ratio approaches zero. The small-bending component of the model is the same as that in the classical von K\'arm\'an model. Here we prove the existence of energy minima for a general class of such models.

5. Nucleation and development of multiple cracks in thin composite fibers

Abstract: We study the nucleation and development of crack patterns in thin composite fibers under tension in this work. A fiber comprises an elastic core and an outer layer of a weaker brittle material. In recent tensile experiments on such composites, multiple cracks were observed to develop simultaneously on the outer layer. We propose here a simple one-dimensional model to predict such phenomenon. We idealize the problem as two axially loaded rods coupled by a linear interfacial condition. The latter can be regarded as an adhesive that resists slip between the two materials. One rod is modeled as a brittle material, and the other a linearly elastic material, both undergoing finite deformations.

6. A group-theoretic approach to the bifurcation analysis of elastic frameworks with symmetry

Abstract: We present a general approach to the bifurcation analysis of elastic frameworks with symmetry. While group-theoretic methods for bifurcation problems with symmetry are well known, their actual implementation in the context of elastic frameworks is not straightforward. We consider frames comprising assemblages of Cosserat rods, and the main difficulty arises from the nonlinear configuration space, due to the presence of (cross-sectional) rotation fields. We avoid this via a single-rod formulation, developed earlier by one of the authors, whereby the governing equations are embedded in a linear space. The field equations comprise the assembly of all rod equations, supplemented by compatibility and equilibrium conditions at the joints. We demonstrate their equivariance under the symmetry-group action, and the implementation of group-theoretic methods is now natural within the linear-space context. All potential generic, symmetry-breaking bifurcations are predicted apriori. We then employ an open-source path-following code, which can detect and compute simple, onedimensional bifurcations; multiple bifurcation points are beyond its capabilities. For the latter, we construct symmetry-reduced problems implemented by appropriate substructures. Multiple bifurcations are rendered simple, and the path-following code is again applicable. We first analyze a simple tripod framework, providing all details of our methodology. We then treat a hexagonal space frame via the same approach. Methods The article employs an international questionnaire promoted by the World Society of Emergency Surgery. Results Through the analysis of 402 fully filled questionnaires by surgeons from 72 different countries, the three main ethical topics are investigated through the lens of gender, membership of an academic or non-academic institution, an official trauma team, and a diverse group. In general terms, results highlight greater attention paid by surgeons belonging to academic institutions, official trauma teams, and diverse groups. Conclusions Our results underline that some organizational factors (e.g., the fact that the team belongs to a university context or is more diverse) might lead to the development of a higher sensibility on ethical matters. Embracing cultural diversity forces trauma teams to deal with different mindsets. Organizations should, therefore, consider those elements in defining their organizational procedures. Level of evidence Trauma and acute care teams work under tremendous pressure and complex circumstances, with their members needing to make ethical decisions quickly. The international survey allowed to shed light on how team assembly decisions might represent an opportunity to coordinate team member actions and increase performance.

8. Hyperpolarisation of external nuclear spins using nitrogen-vacancy centre ensembles

Abstract: The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre in diamond has emerged as a candidate to non-invasively hyperpolarise nuclear spins in molecular systems to improve the sensitivity of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. Several promising proof of principle experiments have demonstrated small-scale polarisation transfer from single NVs to hydrogen spins outside the diamond. However, the scaling up of these results to the use of a dense NV ensemble, which is a necessary prerequisite for achieving realistic NMR sensitivity enhancement, has not yet been demonstrated. In this work, we present evidence for a polarising interaction between a shallow NV ensemble and external nuclear targets over a micrometre scale, and characterise the challenges in achieving useful polarisation enhancement. In the most favourable example of the interaction with hydrogen in a solid state target, a maximum polarisation transfer rate of $\approx 7500$ spins per second per NV is measured, averaged over an area containing order $10^6$ NVs. Reduced levels of polarisation efficiency are found for liquid state targets, where molecular diffusion limits the transfer. Through analysis via a theoretical model, we find that our results suggest implementation of this technique for NMR sensitivity enhancement is feasible following realistic diamond material improvements.

9. Cryptic species and parallel genetic structuring in Lethrinid fish: Implications for conservation and management in the southwest Indian Ocean

Abstract: Analysis of genetic variation can provide insights into ecological and evolutionary diversification which, for commercially harvested species, can also be relevant to the implementation of spatial management strategies and sustainability. In comparison with other marine biodiversity hot spots, there has been less genetic research on the fauna of the southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO). This is epitomized by the lack of information for lethrinid fish, which support socioeconomically important fisheries in the region. This study combines comparative phylogeographic and population genetic analyses with ecological niche modeling to investigate historical and contemporary population dynamics of two species of emperor fish (Lethrinus mahsena and Lethrinus harak) across the SWIO. Both species shared similarly shallow phylogeographic patterns and modeled historical (LGM) habitat occupancies. For both species, allele frequency and kinship analyses of microsatellite variation revealed highly significant structure with no clear geographical pattern and nonrandom genetic relatedness among individuals within samples. The genetic patterns for both species indicate recurrent processes within the region that prevent genetic mixing, at least on timescales of interest to fishery managers, and the potential roles of recruitment variability and population isolation are discussed in light of biological and environmental information. This consistency in both historical and recurrent population processes indicates that the use of model species may be valuable in management initiatives with finite resources to predict population structure, at least in cases wherein biogeographic and ecological differences between taxa are minimized. Paradoxically, mtDNA sequencing and microsatellite analysis of samples from the Seychelles revealed a potential cryptic species occurring in sympatry with, and seemingly morphologically identical to, L. mahsena. BLAST results point to the likely misidentification of species and incongruence between voucher specimens, DNA barcodes, and taxonomy within the group, which highlights the utility and necessity of genetic approaches to characterize baseline biodiversity in the region before such model‐based methods are employed.

Abstract: We revisit the classic stability problem of the buckling of an inextensible, axially compressed beam on a nonlinear elastic foundation with a semi-analytical approach to understand how spatially localized deformation solutions emerge in many applications in mechanics. Instead of a numerical search for such solutions using arbitrary imperfections, we propose a systematic search using branch-following and bifurcation techniques along with group-theoretic methods to find all the bifurcated solution orbits (primary, secondary, etc.) of the system and to examine their stability and hence their observability. Unlike previously proposed methods that use multi-scale perturbation techniques near the critical load, we show that to obtain a spatially localized deformation equilibrium path for the perfect structure, one has to consider the secondary bifurcating path with the longest wavelength and follow it far away from the critical load. Abstract: Transverse wrinkles are known to appear in thin rectangular elastic sheets when stretched in the long direction. Numerically computed bifurcation diagrams for extremely thin, highly stretched films indicate entire orbits of wrinkling solutions, cf. Healey, et. al. [J. Nonlinear Sci., 23 (2013), pp.~777--805]. These correspond to arbitrary phase shifts of the wrinkled pattern in the transverse direction. While such behavior is normally associated with problems in the presence of a continuous symmetry group, an unloaded rectangular sheet possesses only a finite symmetry group. In order to understand this phenomenon, we consider a simpler problem more amenable to analysis -- a finite-length beam on a nonlinear softening foundation under axial compression. We first obtain asymptotic results via amplitude equations, that are valid as a certain non-dimensional beam length becomes sufficiently large. We deduce that any two phase-shifts of a solution differ from one another by exponentially small terms in that length. We validate this observation with numerical computations, indicating the presence of solution orbits for sufficiently long beams. 13. Learning Together Through International Collaborative Writing Groups

Abstract: The International Collaborative Writing Groups (ICWG) initiative creates a space for ongoing collaboration amongst scholars of teaching and learning who co-author a manuscript on a topic of shared interest. The second ICWG, linked to the 2015 International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Conference in Melbourne, Australia, involved 59 scholars from 11 countries. In this piece, we describe the aims, process, and outcomes for the ICWG, comparing it with the first ICWG in 2012. While international collaboration around a topic of shared interest is generally viewed positively, the realities of collaborating online with limited face-to-face interactions to complete a manuscript can be challenging. We argue, despite such challenges, that ongoing collaboration amongst scholars is vital to the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) movement. Drawing on our experience of leading the overall ICWG initiative and our research into participants’ experiences, we suggest there are individual dispositions toward collaboration that enrich and enable successful participation in ICWG experiences. We end by highlighting the final products arising from almost two year of collaborative thinking and writing from six groups.

21. Requiring Clinical Justification to Override Repeat Imaging Decision Support: Impact on CT Use

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of requiring clinical justification to override decision support alerts on repeat use of CT.This before and after intervention study was conducted at a 793-bed tertiary hospital with computerized physician order entry and clinical decision support systems. When a CT order is placed, decision support alerts the orderer if the patient's same body part has undergone CT within the past 90 days. The study cohort included all 28,420 CT orders triggering a repeat alert in 2010. The intervention required clinical justification, selected from a predetermined menu, to override repeat CT decision support alerts to place a CT order; otherwise the order could not be placed and was dropped. The primary outcome, dropped repeat CT orders, was analyzed using three methods: chi-square tests to compare proportions dropped before and after intervention; multiple logistic regression tests to control for orderer, care setting, and patient factors; and statistical process control for temporal trends.The repeat CT order drop rate had an absolute increase of 1.4%; 6.1% (682/11,230) before to 7.5% (1290/17,190) after intervention, which was a 23% relative change (7.5 - 6.1)/6.1 × 100 = 23%; p0.0001). Orders were dropped more often after intervention (odds ratio, 1.3; 95% CI, 1.1-1.4; p0.0001). Statistical control analysis supported the association between the increase in the drop rate with intervention rather than underlying trends.Adding a requirement for clinical justification to override alerts modestly but significantly improves the impact of repeat CT decision support (23% relative change), with the overall effect of preventing one in 13 repeat CT orders.

Accordingly they return to the developable, thin-plate model of Sadowsky and Wunderlich, obtaining such localized shapes. In this work we strike a middle ground between these two approaches. We employ the standard two-director (special) Cosserat model, and we also use the cross-sectional aspect ratio as a numerical continuation parameter. Nonetheless, we are able to capture both the smoothly varying shapes and the localized, nearly triangular configurations. Our point of departure is that we do not always employ the strength-of-materials formula for the torsional stiffness - a standard feature of the Kirchhoff theory. Our key observation comes from the usual Cosserat ansatz in light of developability, suggesting an increasing torsional stiffness ratio (as well as one increasing bending stiffness ratio) as the thickness becomes small. Abstract: We consider a well known model for lipid-bilayer membrane vesicles exhibiting phase separation, incorporating a phase field with finite curvature elasticity. We prove the existence of a plethora of equilibria, corresponding to symmetry-breaking solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations, via global bifurcation from the spherical state. To the best of our knowledge, this constitutes the first rigorous existence results for this class of problems. We overcome several difficulties in carrying this out. Due to inherent in-plane fluidity combined with finite curvature elasticity, neither the Eulerian (spatial) nor the Lagrangian (material) description of the model lends itself well to analysis. Instead we adopt a singularity-free radial-map description that effectively eliminates the grossly underdetermined in-plane fluid deformation. The resulting governing equations comprise a quasi-linear elliptic system with lower-order nonlinear constraints. We then show the equivalence of our problem to that of finding the zeros of compact vector field. The latter is not routine; we obtain certain spectral estimates and then shift the principle part of the operator. Abstract: This project explored the potential of public-student engagement to enhance the student experience through active community and public engagement activities. The project evaluates existing models of public engagement activities to build capacity in both the University and communities to gain greater benefit from the potential such co-generative relationships can provide. This project focused on one university with the intention of\ud complementing this primary activity with collecting case study material from a range of contexts. The context for graduate employment is rapidly changing and there is evidence that students derive benefits when their programmes include opportunities for authentic\ud engagement with real-world problems. There is evidence to suggest that communities can benefit from genuine engagement with universities and their staff and students.\ud \ud Over a two-year period at the University of Gloucestershire, the project team worked with academics, students and community groups with the aim that universities and communities can make the most of the relationships and in particular to enhance the students’\ud experience. This exciting and innovative project worked closely with the National Coordination Centre for Public Engagement to ensure transferability of the project outcomes and to promote outputs from the project.\ud \ud It finds that an estimated 63% students at the University of Gloucestershire are engaged in voluntary work of some kind (63% nationally), of whom, 22% have arranged this through the University or the Student Union (SU) (38 % nationally). Work carried out as part of a project to log voluntary and community engagement across the university involving staff and students has found that approximately 10,000 hours of voluntary work has been carried out in the 2012/13 academic year. The range of work makes understanding and planning this kind of engagement complex. This comprises \ud • Individual self-organised voluntary work, such as brownie or cub scout leadership.\ud • Individual volunteering through a university programme, such as a sports programme working with local teams, or a school mentoring programme (though some of these are paid and therefore not included here).\ud • Individual or team volunteering through Student Union brokerage, such as the SU-run VolunteerShop, campus-based community gardens and an annual tea dance for elderly residents living near the university.\ud • Individual voluntary work within the context of an internship or placement, which may or may not include work for academic credit, such as for a local community\ud project or voluntary organisation, such as the for sports clubs.\ud However, this does not include undergraduate community based research as part of a module that can also account for a considerable contribution of time, effort and expertise.

Abstract: Recent evidence from observation of the flavor-changing neutral current decay B_s to mu+ mu- by the LHCb collaboration B(B_s to mu^+ mu^-) = (3.2 * 10^{-9}), is consistent with the latest standard model prediction B(B_s to mu^+ mu^-) = (3.23 +- 0.27) * 10^{-9}. While New Physics can still affect this decay amplitude, its contribution is certainly not the dominant one. We analyze branching ratios of the decays B_s to mu+ mu- X, with X = a photon or neutrino anti-neutrino pair, which can mimic B_s to mu+ mu- on portions of the parameter space where X is soft. We perform a model-independent standard model calculation of those processes incorporating heavy quark and chiral symmetries of QCD. Abstract: Recent evidence from observation of the flavor-changing neutral current decay B_s to mu+ mu- by the LHCb collaboration B(B_s to mu^+ mu^-) = (3.2 * 10^{-9}), is consistent with the latest standard model prediction B(B_s to mu^+ mu^-) = (3.23 +- 0.27) * 10^{-9}. While New Physics can still affect this decay amplitude, its contribution is certainly not the dominant one. We analyze branching ratios of the decays B_s to mu+ mu- X, with X = a photon or neutrino anti-neutrino pair, which can mimic B_s to mu+ mu- on portions of the parameter space where X is soft. We perform a model-independent standard model calculation of those processes incorporating heavy quark and chiral symmetries of QCD. 29. Pancreatic Mass with an Unusual Pathology: A Case Report

Abstract: Intra-abdominal abscesses formation in patients with no preceding symptoms is rare. Infection of the pancreas occurs in 5–9% of patients with acute pancreatitis, more commonly as a complication of necrotising or severe pancreatitis. We have reported a case of a 64-year-old almost entirely asymptomatic man who underwent a Whipple's procedure following extensive investigation of a pancreatic mass. The pathology and histology showed no evidence of malignancy, and instead a true pancreatic abscess, centred around an impacted cholesterol calculus in the distal CBD. Of suspicious pancreatic masses that are resected, chronic choledocholithiasis is the aetiology in less than 5% of nonmalignant or false positives. This report describes such a case.

30. Acceptability of Behavioral Bully Interventions: Mexican Descent and White American Elementary School Students' Ratings of Assertiveness and Seeking Adult Help Skills

Abstract: Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of school-based interventions for children to use to deal with being bullied. However, the research has not looked at the effectiveness of these interventions for Latino students. These students come to school with different cultural experiences and values. In theory, treatment that is evaluated as acceptable and potentially effective is more likely to be used. This study investigates and compares the treatment acceptability ratings of White American (n = 87) and Mexican descent (n = 28) students for two intervention skills that are often taught in bully intervention programs: assertiveness and seeking help from an adult. Students were taught each skill in an analog group setting and asked to rate the acceptability of each skill. Results showed that White American students had a higher acceptability rating of the assertiveness skill than the Mexican descent students. White American females rated the assertiveness skill higher than Mexican descent males, and rated the skill of seeking adult help higher than White American males. No differences in treatment acceptability were found between the groups of students for the intervention on seeking help from adults. Similar barriers to implementation were reported by both Mexican descent and White American students. Finally, no relationship was found between the Mexican descent students’ acculturation level and treatment acceptability ratings. Implications of these findings for school-based practice and research are discussed.

31. Obstacle Avoidance While Bottom Following for the REMUS Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

Abstract: Proceedings of the IFAC-IAV 2004 Conference, Lisbon, Portugal, July 5-7 Future Naval operations necessitate the incorporation of autonomous underwater vehicles into a collaborative network. In future complex missions, a forward look capability will also be required to map and avoid obstacles such as sunken ships and reefs. Following previous work on steering control, this work examines collision avoidance behaviors in bottom following using a hypothetical forward-looking sonar for the autonomous underwater vehicle REMUS. Hydrodynamic coefficients are used to develop diving equations that model REMUS behaviors. A two-dimensional forward-looking sonar model with a 20° vertical scan and a 40 meter radial range is modeled for obstacle detection. Sonar mappings from geographic range-bearing coordinates are developed for implementation in MATLAB simulations. REMUS is a highly responsive vehicle and care has taken to balance pitch and heave response to keep the obstacle to be avoided in sight during the response behavior.

August This paper provides an overview of the Naval Postgraduate School ARIES autonomous underwater vehicle and its guidance, navigation and control performance. An attempt is made to highlight its current operational capabilities and provide a description of future enhancements for greater mission utility and flexibility. An overview of the vehicle design along with descriptions of all major hardware components and sensors is given. A major discussion of the implementation of a modular, multi-rate, multi-process software architecture for ARIES autonomous control is provided. The architecture is designed to operate using either a single computer processor or two independent, cooperating processors linked through a network interface for improved load balancing. A dual computer implementation is presented here since each processor assumes different tasks for mission operation. Also included is a section on the underwater navigation method using a real-time extended Kalman filter that fuses all sensor data and computes the real time position, orientation, velocity, etc., of the vehicle. Experimental results for navigational accuracy using a DGPS / IMU / Doppler aided navigation system are presented with DGPS pop-up maneuvers.

Abstract: This paper presents the design and development of an enhanced inertial navigation system that is to be integrated into the Morpheus autonomous underwater vehicle at Florida Atlantic University. The inertial measurement unit is based on the off-the-shelf Honeywell HG1700-AG25 3-axis ring-laser gyros and three-axis accelerometers and is aided with ground speed measurements obtained using an RDI Doppler-velocity-log sonar. An extended Kalman filter has been developed, which fuses together asynchronously the inertial and Doppler data, as well as the differential global positioning system positional fixes whenever they are available. A complementary filter was implemented to provide a much smoother and stable attitude estimate. Thus far, preliminary study has been made on characterizing the inertial navigation system-based navigation system performance, and the corresponding results and analyzes are provided in this paper.

This leads naturally to incrreased use of computers, automation and intelligent systems in the concept and design on the next generation of ships. In addition to the acknowledged hardware needs, the problem of autonomic and autonomous control of shipboard systems and missions are amenable to and will, in fact, require software solutions. Despite current technology, large reliable software systems are difficult to achieve because correctness in requirements analysis, design implementation, testing, modification and maintenance of software are difficult. Software is also difficult to quantize and display; hence, the effort and costs involved in its development are easily underestimated. This paper describes an approach to the problem of providing structure, in the form of a software architecture, to the software performing autonomous control of missions and their related tasks. In concert with the need to reduce complexity, the architecture must support simple, rapid reconfiguration of code should vehicle capabilities or mission requirements change. Building upon recent efforts with control of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), we proposea tri-level constrol system architecture called the Rational Behavior Model (RBM) as an approach to autonomous and autonomic control of surface ship missions and systems.

Abstract: This work has involved the use of the Naval Postgraduate School's TRITECH ST 725 high frequency mechanically scanned sonar system to acquire sonar images of simulated surface roughness on an aluminum plate. Signal post processing for such image data is reviewed, and post processed data is analyzed and compared to the known roughness locations on the plate. The simulated roughness pattern of one half inch steel nuts is used as a preliminary experiment in the developemnt of a sonar detection system for marine growth on ship hull plating. Such a sonar system will be an integral part of any ship hull cleaning robot (SHACR). Contained in this report is a description of the experimental arrangement, typical sonar returns, a summary of image processing techniques, and results of processed data. The algorithms presented here will ultimately lead to a real time processing capability for the specification of location and extent of roughness as needed tfor the automatic direction of the robot's motion. 42. Multivariable sliding mode control for autonomous diving and steering of unmanned underwater vehicles

Abstract: six degree of freedom model for the maneuvering of an underwater vehicle is used and a sliding mode autopilot is designed for the combined steering, diving, and speed control functions. In flight control a arise because the system to be controlled is highly nonlinear, coupled, and there is a good deal of parameter uncertainty and variation with operational conditions. The development of variable structure control in the form of sliding modes has been shown to provide robustness that is expected to be quite remarkable for AUV autopilot design. This paper shows that a multivariable sliding mode autopilot based on state feedback, designed assuming decoupled modeling, is quite satisfactory for the combined speed, steering, and diving response of a slow speed AUV. The influence of speed, modeling nonlinearity, uncertainty, and disturbances, can be effectively compensated, even for complex maneuvering. Waypoint acquisition based on line of sight guidance is used to achieve path tracking.

44. Path Control of Surface Ships Using Sliding Modes

Abstract: The surface ship path control problem is formulated as a nonlinear state space control problem subject to disturbances modeling errors, and parameter uncertainty. A "destroyer study" ship using a nonlinear maneuvering ~odel is used as the system model. The system to be controlled is highly nonlinear with parameters that vary with speed and operational conditions. Uncertainty in the for.ce ~oefficients, as well as in disturbances of the seaway lead to the need for a robust control for nav1gat1onal accuracy. This paper investigates the use of cross track error and line-of-sight guidance laws wit~ a sli?ing m~de autopilot for path control of surface ships, and presents results based on computer s1mulat1ons using the model described above. The results illustrate the simplicity and effectiveness of the robust control design for compensating the nonlinearities and disturbance effects with improvements. in the navigational accuracy. Comparisons between the two guidance schemes are presented and guidelines are developed with respect to proper guidance selection.

Abstract: The problem of controlling an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) in a diving maneuver is addressed. The requirement for having a simple controller which performs satisfactorily in the presence of dynamical uncertainties calls for a design using the sliding mode approach, based on a dominant linear model and bounds on the nonlinear perturbations of the dynamics. Both nonadaptive and adaptive techniques are considered, leading to the design of robust controllers that can adjust to the changing dynamics and operating conditions. Also, the problem of using the observed state in the control design is addressed, leading to a sliding mode control system based on input-output signals in terms of dive-plane command and depth measurement. Numerical simulations using a full set of nonlinear equations of motion show the effectiveness of the proposed techniques.
