Purpose: Uncertainties remain about the safety and efficacy of therapies for managing intracranial hypertension in acute brain injured (ABI) patients. This study aims to describe the therapeutical approaches used in ABI, with/without intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring, among different pathologies and across different countries, and their association with sixmonths mortality and neurological outcome. Methods: A preplanned subanalysis of the SYNAPSE-ICU study, a multicentre, prospective, international, observational cohort study, describing the ICP treatment, graded according to Therapy Intensity Level (TIL) scale, in patients with ABI during the first week of intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Results: 2320 patients were included in the analysis. The median age was 55 (I-III quartiles = 39-69) years, and 800 (34.5%) were female. During the first week from ICU admission, no-basic TIL was used in 382 (16.5%) patients, mild-moderate in 1643 (70.8%), and extreme in 295 cases (eTIL, 12.7%). The performance of electrochemical devices using ionic liquids (ILs) as electrolytes can be impaired by water uptake. This work investigates the influence of water on the behavior of hydrophilic and hydrophobic ILs─with ethylsulfate and tris(perfluoroalkyl)trifluorophosphate or bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide (TFSI) anions, respectively─on electrified graphene, a promising electrode material. The results show that water uptake slightly reduces the IL electrochemical stability and significantly influences graphene's potential of zero charge, which is justified by the extent of anion depletion from the surface. Experiments confirm the dominant contribution of graphene's quantum capacitance (CQ) to the total interfacial capacitance (Cint) near the PZC, as expected from theory. Combining theory and experiments reveals that the hydrophilic IL efficiently screens surface charge and exhibits the largest double layer capacitance (CIL ∼ 80 μF cm-2), so that CQ governs the charge stored. The hydrophobic ILs are less efficient in charge screening and thus exhibit a smaller capacitance (CIL ∼ 6-9 μF cm-2), which governs Cint already at small potentials. An increase in the total interfacial capacitance is observed at positive voltages for humid TFSI-ILs relative to dry ones, consistent with the presence of a satellite peak. Short-range surface forces reveal the change of the interfacial layering with potential and water uptake owing to reorientation of counterions, counterion binding, co-ion repulsion, and water enrichment. These results are consistent with the charge being mainly stored in a ∼2 nm-thick double layer, which implies that ILs behave as highly concentrated electrolytes. This knowledge will advance the design of IL-graphene-based electrochemical devices.

Intrahepatic islet transplantation for type 1 diabetes is limited by the need for multiple infusions and poor islet viability posttransplantation. The development of alternative transplantation sites is necessary to improve islet survival and facilitate monitoring and retrieval. We tested a clinically proven biodegradable temporizing matrix (BTM), a polyurethane-based scaffold, to generate a well-vascularized intracutaneous “neodermis” within the skin for islet transplantation. In murine models, BTM did not impair syngeneic islet renal-subcapsular transplant viability or function, and it facilitated diabetes cure for over 150 days. Furthermore, BTM supported functional neonatal porcine islet transplants into RAG-1−/− mice for 400 days. Hence, BTM is nontoxic for islets. Two-photon intravital imaging used to map vessel growth through time identified dense vascular networks, with significant collagen deposition and increases in vessel mass up to 30 days after BTM implantation. In a preclinical porcine skin model, BTM implants created a highly vascularized intracutaneous site by day 7 postimplantation. When syngeneic neonatal porcine islets were transplanted intracutaneously, the islets remained differentiated as insulin-producing cells, maintained normal islet architecture, secreted c-peptide, and survived for over 100 days. Here, we show that BTM facilitates formation of an islet-supportive intracutaneous neodermis in a porcine preclinical model, as an alternative islet-transplant site. Article Highlights Human and porcine pancreatic islets were transplanted into a fully vascularized biodegradable temporizing matrix (Novosorb) that creates a unique intracutaneous site outside of the liver in a large-animal preclinical model. The intracutaneous prevascularized site supported pancreatic islet survival for 3 months in a syngeneic porcine-transplant model. Pancreatic (human and porcine) islet survival and function were demonstrated in an intracutaneous site outside of the liver for the first time in a large-animal preclinical model.

A growing number of social interactions are taking place virtually on videoconferencing platforms. Here, we explore potential effects of virtual interactions on observed behavior, subjective experience, and neural “single-brain” and “interbrain” activity via functional near-infrared spectroscopy neuroimaging. We scanned a total of 36 human dyads (72 participants, 36 males, 36 females) who engaged in three naturalistic tasks (i.e., problem-solving, creative-innovation, socio-emotional task) in either an in-person or virtual (Zoom) condition. We also coded cooperative behavior from audio recordings. We observed reduced conversational turn-taking behavior during the virtual condition. Given that conversational turn-taking was associated with other metrics of positive social interaction (e.g., subjective cooperation and task performance), this measure may be an indicator of prosocial interaction. In addition, we observed altered patterns of averaged and dynamic interbrain coherence in virtual interactions. Interbrain coherence patterns that were characteristic of the virtual condition were associated with reduced conversational turn-taking. These insights can inform the design and engineering of the next generation of videoconferencing technology.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENTVideoconferencing has become an integral part of our lives. Whether this technology impacts behavior and neurobiology is not well understood. We explored potential effects of virtual interaction on social behavior, brain activity, and interbrain coupling. We found that virtual interactions were characterized by patterns of interbrain coupling that were negatively implicated in cooperation. Our findings are consistent with the perspective that videoconferencing technology adversely affects individuals and dyads during social interaction. As virtual interactions become even more necessary, improving the design of videoconferencing technology will be crucial for supporting effective communication.

Purpose: The purpose of this research was to explore the knowledge, beliefs and experiences of Canadian dietitians relating to gender and sexual orientation diversity within the profession. Our aim is to share some of the knowledge, beliefs and experiences though comic art, a medium that is widely popular and has been used in health knowledge translation to teach about health, health practices and client care practices. Methods: The research conducted was a qualitative poststructural thematic discourse analysis. Sixteen Canadian dietitians were recruited and asked to share their thoughts and experiences and gender and sexual diversity in the profession. Results: Participants spoke of cis-heteronormativity, feelings of not belonging and offered suggestions to create a more inclusive profession. Through a creative collaboration with an artist, a comic was created to share these findings. Conclusion: Dietetic students, educators and practitioners must take an active role in seeking out and modelling learning opportunities to ensure that the profession continues to move toward ensuring a safe and inclusive space for 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals.

Mikecoxite, ideally (CHg4)OCl2, is the first mercury-oxide-chloride-carbide containing a C4– anion coordinated by four Hg atoms (a permercurated methane derivative) to be described as a mineral species. It was found at the McDermitt open-pit mine on the eastern margin of the McDermitt Caldera, Humboldt County, Nevada, U.S.A. It is monoclinic, space group P21/n, Z = 4; a = 10.164(5), b = 10.490(4), c = 6.547(3) Å, V 698.0(5) Å3. Chemical analysis by electron microprobe gave Hg 86.38, Cl 11.58, Br 0.46, C 1.81, sum = 100.23 wt%, and O was detected but the signal was too weak for quantitative chemical analysis. The empirical formula, calculated on the basis of Hg + Cl + Br = 6 apfu, is (C1.19Hg3.39)(Cl2.57Br0.05)Σ2.62, and the ideal formula based on the chemical analysis and the crystal structure is (CHg4)OCl2. The seven strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are [d (Å), I, (hkl)]: 2.884, 100, (230); 2.989, 81, (301, 301, 112, 112, 131, 131); 2.673, 79, (122, 122, 212, 212); 1.7443, 40, (060, 432, 432); 5.49, 34, (101, 101); 4.65, 32, (120); 2.300, 30, (312, 312). The Raman spectrum shows three bands at 638, 675, and 704 cm–1, well above the range characteristic of NHg4 stretching vibrations between 540 and 580 cm–1, that are assigned to CHg4 stretching vibrations. Mikecoxite forms intergrowths of bladed crystals up to 100 μm long that occur on granular quartz or in vugs associated with kleinite. It is black with a submetallic to metallic luster and strong specular reflections and does not fluoresce under short-or long-wave ultraviolet light. Neither cleavage nor parting were observed, and the calculated density is 8.58 g/cm3. In the crystal structure of mikecoxite, (C4–Hg42+) groups link through O2– ions to form three-membered rings that polymerize into corrugated [CHg4OCl]+ layers with near-linear C4––Hg2+–O and C 4––Hg2+–Cl linkages. The layers link in the third direction directly via weak Hg2+–O2– and Hg2+–Cl– bonds to adjacent layers and also indirectly via interlayer Cl–. A bond-valence parameter has been derived for (Hg2+–C4–) bonds: Ro = 2.073 Å, b = 0.37, which gives bond-valence sums at the C4– ions in accord with the valence-sum rule. The source of carbon for mikecoxite in the volcanic high-desert environment of the type locality seems to be methane, with the reaction catalyzed by microbiota through full mercuration of carbon atoms, beyond the first stage that produces the volatile and highly mobile methylmercury, [CH3Hg]+, a potent neurotoxin that accumulates in marine food chains. Both the mineral and the mineral name have been approved by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA 2021-060). The mineral is named after Michael F. Cox (b. 1958), a founding member of the New Almaden Quicksilver County Park Association (NAQCPA) who was responsible for characterizing and remediating environmental mercury on-site and who recovered the rock containing the new mineral.

Subscapularis failure is a troublesome complication following anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSA). Commonly discarded during aTSA, the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT) may offer an efficient and cheap autograft for the augmentation of the subscapularis repair during aTSA. The purpose of this study was to biomechanically compare a standard subscapularis peel repair to 2 methods of subscapularis peel repair augmented with LHBT.18 human cadaveric shoulders (61 ± 9 years of age) were used in this study. Shoulders were randomly assigned to biomechanically compare subscapularis peel repair with (1) traditional single-row repair, (2) single row with horizontal LHBT augmentation, or (3) single row with V-shaped LHBT augmentation. Shoulders underwent biomechanical testing on a servohydraulic testing system to compare cyclic displacement, load to failure, and stiffness.There were no significant differences in the cyclic displacement between the 3 techniques in the superior, middle, or inferior portion of the subscapularis repair (P .05). The horizontal (436.7 ± 113.3 N; P = .011) and V-shape (563.3 ± 101.0 N; P .001) repair demonstrated significantly greater load to failure compared with traditional repair (344.4 ± 82.4 N). The V-shape repair had significantly greater load to failure compared to the horizontal repair (P .001). The horizontal (61.6 ± 8.4 N/mm; P .001) and the V-shape (62.8 ± 6.1; P .001) repairs demonstrated significantly greater stiffness compared to the traditional repair (47.6 ± 6.2 N). There was no significant difference in the stiffness of the horizontal and V-shape repairs (P = .770).Subscapularis peel repair augmentation with LHBT autograft following aTSA confers greater time zero load to failure and stiffness when compared to a standard subscapularis peel repair.

The criteria for the definition of a new mineral species currently used by the Commission on New Minerals Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) of the International Mineralogical Association are critically examined. In particular, the rule of the dominant constituent can violate the laws of conservation of electric charge. A series of additional rules: (1) valency-imposed double site-occupancy; (2) the dominant-valency rule; and (3) the site-total-charge approach, have been developed in an attempt to correct this error. However, none of these rules can overcome the fundamental flaw introduced by the rule of the dominant constituent, and the chemical formulae resulting from application of these rules can violate the requirements of an end-member, particularly that of electroneutrality. As a result, the IMA–CNMNC rules cannot derive end-member formulae for some groups of minerals, giving rise to many ad hoc decisions in defining distinct mineral species.

Bowhead whales generally migrate into high Arctic waters in the summer months and move to lower latitudes in the wintertime. During the 1800s and early 1900s commercial whaling greatly reduced the numbers of bowhead whales in waters adjacent to the North Atlantic Ocean. In recent decades their numbers have been increasing. Thirteen sightings of a bowhead whale were recorded in four areas of the Gulf of Maine in 2012, 2014, and 2017 between latitudes 44°43’N and 41°36’N, far south of the normal range (54°N) for this species. Photographs obtained during these sightings were compared by experienced photo analysts and, based on scarring patterns, the sightings were confirmed to be of the same individual. The bowhead whale was observed alone, in addition to interacting in a social group and engaged in coordinated feeding with other mysticetes at times. The feeding and social behaviour of the bowhead whale was typical for the species but well south of its normal Arctic waters range and in the absence of conspecifics.

Population-based studies of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Cardiff have recorded data back to 1930 for Crohn’s disease (CD) and 1968 for ulcerative colitis (UC). This study compares incidence and phenotype for 2005–2016 with past data. All new IBD cases resident in the Cardiff at diagnosis were collected retrospectively for the 12-year period 2005–2016, and compared with previous Cardiff data for trends in incidence and phenotype. Overall incidence was age/sex corrected to the UK population. There were 991 new patients: 34% had CD, 5.4% IBD unclassified (IBD-U) and 60.5% had UC. The corrected incidence of CD was 7.7 per 100,000 person years [95% CI 6.9–8.6]. CD incidence is significantly higher than previous Cardiff studies, but the annual percentage change (APC) for 1980–2016 of 0.06; [95%CI −0.02 to 0.14] is not significant, with a previous higher APC for 1953–1980 of 0.18, [95%CI 0.13 to 0.23]. Uncorrected IBD-U incidence was 1.3 per 100,000 person years [95% CI 1.0–1.7]. UC corrected incidence was 14.4 per 100,000 person years [95% CI 13.3–15.6]. Incidence of UC is greater than in previous studies but did not increase during the current 12-year period. CD distribution at diagnosis continues to change as in previous Cardiff studies, with further increase in colonic disease and ileocolonic, (42% L2, 28% L3) and reduction in isolated terminal ileal disease (29% L1). Incidence of both CD and UC are no longer rising significantly, but the location of CD at diagnosis continues to change with an increase in colonic location.Key messagesWhat is already known? Chronic inducible urticaria (CIndU) is characterized by mast cell (MC)-mediated wheals in response to triggers: cold in cold urticaria (ColdU) and friction in symptomatic dermographism (SD). KIT receptor activation by stem cell factor (SCF) is essential for MC function. Barzolvolimab (CDX-0159) is a humanized antibody that inhibits KIT activation by SCF and was well tolerated in healthy volunteers with dose-dependent plasma tryptase suppression indicative of systemic mast cell ablation.This is an open-label, trial in patients with antihistamine refractory ColdU or SD, receiving one IV dose of barzolvolimab (3 mg/kg), with a 12-week follow-up. Primary endpoint was safety/tolerability; pharmacodynamic (PD)/clinical endpoints included serum tryptase, plasma SCF, skin MC histology, provocation tests, urticaria control test (UCT), and dermatology life quality index (DLQI).Analysis populations were safety (n = 21) and pharmacodynamics/clinical activity (n = 20). Barzolvolimab was well tolerated; most adverse events were mild and resolved. Treatment resulted in significant depletion of skin MCs, decreased tryptase (limit of detection), and increased soluble SCF through Week 12. Complete responses (negative provocation test) occurred in 95% (n = 19/20) of patients (n = 10/10 ColdU; n = 9/10 SD), and all (n = 20/20) showed improvement in urticaria control (UCT ≥ 12). The kinetics of clinical activity mirrored that of MC and tryptase reduction. DLQI-measured impairment significantly decreased to minimal/none in 93% of patients on study.In CIndU patients, barzolvolimab was well tolerated, demonstrated marked, rapid, durable depletion of skin MCs, circulating tryptase, and reductions in clinical activity with significant improvements in disease control and quality of life (QoL) demonstrating potential therapeutic effects for MC-mediated disorders.

Background: Loss of initial reduction of the acromioclavicular joint after coracoclavicular (CC) ligament reconstruction remains a challenge for various repair techniques. Previous studies using polydioxanone suture cerclage augments for CC ligament reconstruction demonstrated poor clinical and biomechanical outcomes. Tape-style sutures have recently gained popularity because of their added stiffness and strength relative to traditional sutures. These tape cerclage systems have yet to be biomechanically studied in CC ligament reconstruction. Purpose: To determine the efficacy of a tape cerclage system as an augment to CC ligament reconstruction. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: A total of 24 human cadaveric shoulders were utilized. These were divided into 4 repair groups: anatomic CC ligament reconstruction (ACCR), ACCR with a tape cerclage augment (ACCR + C), tendon graft sling with a cerclage augment (TGS + C), or tape cerclage sling alone (CS). The repairs underwent superior/inferior cyclic loading to evaluate for displacement. Specimens were visually inspected for cortical erosion by the tape cerclage after cyclic loading. Finally, the constructs underwent superior plane load-to-failure testing. Results: Less displacement after cyclic loading was observed in the ACCR + C (mean ± SD, 0.42 ± 0.32 mm), TGS + C (0.92 ± 0.42 mm), and CS (0.93 ± 0.39 mm) groups as compared with the ACCR group (4.42 ± 3.40 mm; P = .002). ACCR + C (813.3 ± 257.5 N), TGS + C (558.0 ± 120.7 N), and CS (759.5 ± 173.7 N) demonstrated significantly greater load at failure relative to ACCR (329.2 ± 118.2 N) ( P < .001). ACCR + C (60.88 ± 17.3 N/mm), TGS + C (44.97 ± 9.15 N/mm), and CS (54.52 ± 14.24 N/mm) conferred greater stiffness than ACCR (27.43 ± 6.94 N/mm) ( P = .001). No cortical erosion was demonstrated in any specimen after cyclic loading. Conclusion: In a cadaveric model at time zero, repairs utilizing a tape cerclage system confer significantly greater load to failure and stiffness, as well as decreased displacement with cyclic loading, when compared with traditional ACCR repair. Clinical Relevance: Tape cerclage augmentation may provide a useful augment for CC ligament reconstruction.

Healthcare students have expressed a need for more education on the aging adult population. Interprofessional education (IPE) is a well-known educational model intended to increase students' knowledge, skill, and abilities to use evidence-based practice for improved patient outcomes. At a Midwestern, urban-based university, we have implemented an interprofessional, student-led Geriatric Assessment Clinic in order to allow students in six health professions (including medicine, nutrition, occupational therapy, physical therapy, social work, and speech language pathology) to practically apply their skills in the aging adult population while learning to work with other healthcare professionals. This holistic clinic is free of cost to the aging adults who participate in it. The following article discusses the purpose, implementation, benefits, and limitations of such a clinic as it relates to both the patients who attend and the students who participate.

Iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster (ISC) cofactors are required for the function of many critical cellular processes. In the ISC Fe-S cluster biosynthetic pathway, IscU assembles Fe-S cluster intermediates from iron, electrons, and inorganic sulfur, which is provided by the cysteine desulfurase enzyme IscS. IscU also binds to Zn, which mimics and competes for binding with the Fe-S cluster. Crystallographic and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic studies reveal that IscU is a metamorphic protein that exists in multiple conformational states, which include at least a structured form and a disordered form. The structured form of IscU is favored by metal binding and is stable in a narrow temperature range, undergoing both cold and hot denaturation. Interestingly, the form of IscU that binds IscS and functions in Fe-S cluster assembly remains controversial. Here, results from variable temperature electrospray ionization (vT-ESI) native ion mobility mass spectrometry (nIM-MS) establish that IscU exists in structured, intermediate, and disordered forms that rearrange to more extended conformations at higher temperatures. A comparison of Zn-IscU and apo-IscU reveals that Zn(II) binding attenuates the cold/heat denaturation of IscU, promotes refolding of IscU, favors the structured and intermediate conformations, and inhibits the disordered high charge states. Overall, these findings provide a structural rationalization for the role of Zn(II) in stabilizing IscU conformations and IscS in altering the IscU active site to prepare for Zn(II) release and cluster synthesis. This work highlights how vT-ESI-nIM-MS can be applied as a powerful tool in mechanistic enzymology by providing details of relationships among temperature, protein conformations, and ligand/protein binding.

Various distal biceps tendon repair techniques exist, each with their own biomechanical profile. Recently, all-suture anchor fixation has recently become an intriguing option for distal biceps fixation, compared with the proven track record of the suspensory cortical button. In addition, intramedullary techniques have been utilized as a means to avoid complications such as nerve damage seen with extramedullary fixation.The purpose of this study is to perform a comparative biomechanical analysis of 4 unique distal biceps tendon fixation methods: Unicortical/intramedullary all-suture anchor fixation (UIAS), Bicortical/extramedullary all-suture anchor fixation (BEAS), Unicortical/intramedullary suspensory button fixation (UISB), and Bicortical/extramedullary suspensory button fixation (BESB).Controlled Laboratory study.24 fresh-frozen cadaveric elbows were randomized into 4 groups providing data from 6 specimens, with each group undergoing a different repair technique. The specimens underwent 2 studies: Cyclic loading and Ultimate Load to failure (ULTF) testing. The repaired elbows were cycled 3000 times between 0 and 90 degrees of flexion, with displacement under cyclic loading at the repair site measured using a differential variable reductance transducer. ULTF test was performed with the elbow flexed at 90 degrees. The modes of failure were recorded.The mean cyclic displacements between the 4 groups were as follows: UIAS: 1.45 ± 1.04 mm; BEAS: 2.75 ± 1.32 mm; UISB: 1.45 ± .776 mm; BESB: 2.66 ± 1.18 mm (p= 0.077). Bicortical repairs displayed greater displacement after cyclic loading when compared with unicortical repairs regardless of anchor used (p= 0.007). The mean ULTF for each group was as follows: all-suture intramedullary: 200 N; all-suture extramedullary: 330 N; cortical-button intramedullary: 256 N; cortical-button extramedullary: 342 N). All-suture unicortical/intramedullary repair had a significantly lower ULTF (200 N) compared with cortical-button Bicortical/extramedullary repair (342 N) (p=0.043).Bicortical/extramedullary suspensory button fixation demonstrated a greater ultimate load to failure when compared with unicortical/intramedullary all-suture anchor fixation. These findings suggest that bicortical/extramedullary suspensory cortical button fixation is a biomechanically superior construct as compared to unicortical/intramedullary all-suture anchor fixation. However, there was no significant difference in ULTF between extra-medullary, Bicortical button or Bicortical, all-suture anchor fixation.

Pharmacokinetic or pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic models have been instrumental in facilitating the clinical use of propofol in target-controlled infusion systems in anaesthetic practice. There has been debate over which model should be recommended for practice. The covariates model is an updated pharmacokinetic model for propofol. The aim of this study was to prospectively validate this model in an adult population.Twenty-nine patients were included, with a range of ages to assess model performance in younger and older individuals. Subjects received propofol through a target-controlled infusion device programmed with the covariates model. Subjects were randomised to one of two increasing/decreasing regimes of propofol plasma target concentrations between 2 and 5 μg.mLThe model achieved a bias of 9 (- 45 to 82) and precision of 24 (9-82) for arterial samples and bias of - 8 (- 64 to 70) and precision of 23 (9-70) for venous samples. Predicted concentrations tended to be higher than the measured concentrations in female individuals but lower in male individuals. There was no clear systematic difference in the bias between younger and older patients.The covariates propofol pharmacokinetic model achieved an acceptable level of predictive performance, as assessed by both arterial and venous sampling, for use in target-controlled infusion in clinical practice.NCT01492712 (15 December, 2011).Pharmacokinetic models can estimate the changes in the concentration of a drug in the body over time. These have been instrumental in facilitating the clinical use of anaesthetic agents such as propofol in target-controlled infusions, which aim to achieve a set concentration in either plasma or the brain to achieve anaesthesia. The covariates model is a previously described pharmacokinetic model for propofol. The aim of the described study was to validate the performance of the model in an independent adult population. Participants received anaesthesia with propofol through a target-controlled infusion device programmed with the covariates model. The concentration of propofol in the blood was measured at various timepoints and compared to the target concentration specified by the target-controlled infusion device. The analysis showed that overall, the covariates model performed to a level acceptable for use in clinical practice and compared favourably to other pharmacokinetic models.

Failed rotator cuff repairs present a complex issue for treating surgeons. Many methods of management exist for this pathology including revision repair with biologic augmentation, repairs with allograft, tendon transfers, superior capsular reconstruction, balloon arthroplasty, bursal acromial reconstruction, and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. This review discusses the current literature associated with these management options.

The majority vote model is one of the simplest opinion systems yielding distinct phase transitions and has garnered significant interest in recent years. However, its original formulation is not, in general, thermodynamically consistent, precluding the achievement of quantities such as power and heat, as well as their behaviors at phase transition regimes. Here, we circumvent this limitation by introducing the idea of a distinct heat bath per local configuration, in such a way that each neighborhood value is associated with a distinct and well-defined thermal bath. Thermodynamic properties are derived for a generic majority vote model, irrespective of its neighborhood and lattice topology. The behavior of energy/heat fluxes at phase transitions, whether continuous or discontinuous, in regular and complex topologies, is investigated in detail. Unraveling the contribution of each local configuration explains the nature of the phase diagram and reveals how dissipation arises from the dynamics.

The great expansion of economic activity since the end of World War II has caused an unprecedented rise in living standards, but it has also caused rapid changes in earth systems. Nearly all types of natural capital—the world’s stock of resources and services provided by nature—are in decline. Clean air, abundant and clean water, fertile soils, productive fisheries, dense forests, and healthy oceans are critical for healthy lives and healthy economies. Mounting pressures, however, suggest that the trend of declining natural capital may cast a long shadow into the future. "Nature’s Frontiers: Achieving Sustainability, Efficiency, and Prosperity with Natural Capital" presents a novel approach to address these foundational challenges of sustainability. A methodology combining innovative science, new data sources, and cutting-edge biophysical and economic models builds sustainable resource efficiency frontiers to assess how countries can sustainably use their natural capital more efficiently. The analysis provides recommendations on how countries can better use their natural capital to achieve their economic and environ mental goals. The report indicates that significant efficiency gaps exist in nearly every country. Closing these gaps can address many of the world’s pressing economic and environmental problems—economic productivity, health, food and water security, and climate change. Although the approach outlined in this report will entail demanding policy reforms, the costs of inaction will be far higher.

Nowadays, big data and information technology have become mainstream, and the rapid growth of information volume has greatly met people's needs. However, the surge in data volume has also brought a negative impact on people, the most prominent problem being the influx of more and more invalid information into people's daily life. Graph data is one of the hot directions of current research in the field of data mining. A graph is an important information organization structure, which consists of nodes and edges. A large amount of data in daily life can be organized by graphs. This paper uses graphical neural network techniques to cope with the cold start problem and at the same time ensure that the model still has the ability to understand the content features of the nodes. In recommender systems, the prevalent user-item interaction graph is essentially a bifurcated heterogeneous graph, in which user nodes and item nodes belong to two different node domains, and nodes in different domains may have different initial feature dimensions. In this case, it is difficult to cope with the graph neural network for processing homogeneous graphs, so research on a bipartite heterogeneous graph inference network is needed. In this paper, we design a bipartite self-encoder based on the graph self-encoder and improve the performance of the target task through the dual-task collaborative optimization of node classification and connection prediction. In this paper, subgraph extraction is introduced to achieve diversity in training graph topology by sampling subgraphs in large graphs. Experiment results illustrate that the recommendation model in this paper achieves a performance that surpasses that of some mainstream baselines while coping with the cold start problem.

We probe the present-day stresses in the lunar interior by examining the slip directions of moonquakes in the A01 nest. In this nest, some deep moonquakes appear to slip “backwards,” in the opposite direction to other events. We assess whether these changes in slip direction result from a spatial variation in the tectonic stress or from a temporal variation in the tidal stress. To test these two options, we first show that a dominant tectonic stress implies deep moonquakes can only slip in one direction: forwards and backwards, while a dominant tidal stress could allow moonquakes to slip in more directions: any combination of forwards, backwards, left, and right. Then we look for the number of slip directions; we separate the deep moonquake waveforms into slip directions using a principal component analysis technique. We find two slip directions present in the A01 deep moonquake nest. The moonquakes slip in a variety of directions as time evolves. This observation implies that the tidal stresses drive deep moonquakes. Additionally, these results place a new constraint on the magnitude of the tectonic stresses at depth; they must be smaller than the modeled tidal stress of ∼0.1 MPa.

Background Insect bite inflammation may mimic cellulitis and promote unnecessary antibiotic usage, contributing to antimicrobial resistance in primary care. We wondered how general practice clinicians assess and manage insect bites, diagnose cellulitis, and prescribe antibiotics. Method This is a Quality Improvement study in which 10 general practices in England and Wales investigated patients attending for the first time with insect bites between April and September 2021 to their practices. Mode of consultation, presentation, management plan, and reattendance or referral were noted. Total practice flucloxacillin prescribing was compared to that for insect bites. Results A combined list size of 161,346 yielded 355 insect bite consultations. Nearly two-thirds were female, ages 3–89 years old, with July as the peak month and a mean weekly incidence of 8 per 100,000. GPs still undertook most consultations; most were phone consultations, with photo support for over half. Over 40% presented between days 1 and 3 and common symptoms were redness, itchness, pain, and heat. Vital sign recording was not common, and only 22% of patients were already taking an antihistamine despite 45% complaining of itch. Antibiotics were prescribed to nearly three-quarters of the patients, mainly orally and mostly as flucloxacillin. Reattendance occurred for 12% and referral to hospital for 2%. Flucloxacillin for insect bites contributed a mean of 5.1% of total practice flucloxacillin prescriptions, with a peak of 10.7% in July. Conclusions Antibiotics are likely to be overused in our insect bite practice and patients could make more use of antihistamines for itch before consulting.

Is the fact that our universe contains fine-tuned life evidence that we live in a multiverse? Ian Hacking and Roger White influentially argue that it is not. We approach this question through a systematic framework for self-locating epistemology. As it turns out, leading approaches to self-locating evidence agree that the fact that our own universe contains fine-tuned life indeed confirms the existence of a multiverse (at least in a suitably idealized setting). This convergence is no accident: we present two theorems showing that, in this setting, any updating rule that satisfies a few reasonable conditions will have the same feature. The conclusion that fine-tuned life provides evidence for a multiverse is hard to escape.

Since their introduction in 1929, Pauling’s five rules have been used by scientists from many disciplines to rationalize and predict stable arrangements of atoms and coordination polyhedra in crystalline solids; amorphous materials such as silicate glasses and melts; nanomaterials, poorly crystalline solids; aqueous cation and anion complexes; and sorption complexes at mineral-aqueous solution interfaces. The predictive power of these simple yet powerful rules was challenged recently by George et al. (2020), who performed a statistical analysis of the performance of Pauling’s five rules for about 5000 oxide crystal structures. They concluded that only 13% of the oxides satisfy the last four rules simultaneously and that the second rule has the most exceptions. They also found that Pauling’s first rule is satisfied for only 66% of the coordination environments tested and concluded that no simple rule linking ionic radius to coordination environment will be predictive due to the variable quality of univalent radii. We address these concerns and discuss quantum mechanical calculations that complement Pauling’s rules, particularly his first (radius sum and radius ratio rule) and second (electrostatic valence rule) rules. We also present a more realistic view of the bonded radii of atoms, derived by determining the local minimum in the electron density distribution measured along trajectories between bonded atoms known as bond paths, i.e., the bond critical point (rc). Electron density at the bond critical point is a quantum mechanical observable that correlates well with Pauling bond strength. Moreover, a metal atom in a polyhedron has as many bonded radii as it has bonded interactions, resulting in metal and O atoms that may not be spherical. O atoms, for example, are not spherical in many oxide-based crystal structures. Instead, the electron density of a bonded oxygen is often highly distorted or polarized, with its bonded radius decreasing systematically from ~1.38 Å when bonded to highly electropositive atoms like sodium to 0.64 Å when bonded to highly electronegative atoms like nitrogen. Bonded radii determined for metal atoms match the Shannon (1976) radii for more electropositive atoms, but the match decreases systematically as the electronegativities of the M atoms increase. As a result, significant departures from the radius ratio rule in the analysis by George et al. (2020) is not surprising. We offer a modified, more fundamental version of Pauling’s first rule and demonstrate that the second rule has a one-to-one connection between the electron density accumulated between the bonded atoms at the bond critical point and the Pauling bond strength of the bonded interaction. Pauling’s second rule implicitly assumes that bond strength is invariant with bond length for a given pair of bonded atoms. Many studies have since shown that this is not the case, and Brown and Shannon (1973) developed an equation and a set of parameters to describe the relation between bond length and bond strength, now redefined as bond valence to avoid confusion with Pauling bond-strength. Brown (1980) used the valence-sum rule, together with the path rule and the valence-matching principle, as the three axioms of bond-valence theory (BVT), a powerful method for understanding many otherwise elusive aspects of crystals and also their participation in dynamic processes. We show how a priori bond-valence calculations can predict unstrained bond-lengths and how bond-valence mapping can locate low-Z atoms in a crystal structure (e.g., Li) or examine possible diffusion pathways for atoms through crystal structures. In addition, we briefly discuss Pauling’s third, fourth, and fifth rules, the first two of which concern the sharing of polyhedron elements (edges and faces) and the common instability associated with structures in which a polyhedron shares an edge or face with another polyhedron and contains high-valence cations. The olivine [α-(MgxFe1–x)2SiO4] crystal structure is used to illustrate the distortions from hexagonal close-packing of O atoms caused by metal-metal repulsion across shared polyhedron edges. We conclude by discussing several applications of BVT to Earth materials, including the use of BVT to: (1) locate H+ ions in crystal structures, including the location of protons in the crystal structures of nominally anhydrous minerals in Earth’s mantle; (2) determine how strongly bonded (usually anionic) structural units interact with weakly bonded (usually cationic) interstitial complexes in complex uranyl-oxide and uranyl-oxysalt minerals using the valence-matching principle; (3) calculate Lewis acid strengths of cations and Lewis base strengths of anions; (4) determine how (H2O) groups can function as bond-valence transformers by dividing one bond into two bonds of half the bond valence; (5) help characterize products of sorption reactions of aqueous cations (e.g., Co2+ and Pb2+) and oxyanions [e.g., selenate (Se6+O4)2− and selenite (Se4+O3)2−] at mineral-aqueous solution interfaces and the important role of protons in these reactions; and (6) help characterize the local coordination environments of highly charged cations (e.g., Zr4+, Ti4+, U4+, U5+, and U6+) in silicate glasses and melts.

Bortolanite (IMA 2021–040a), ideally Ca2(Ca1.5Zr0.5)Na(NaCa)Ti(Si2O7)2(FO)F2, is a rinkite-group (seidozerite supergroup) TS-block mineral from Poços de Caldas massif, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Associated minerals are götzenite, nepheline, alkali feldspar, aegirine, natrolite, analcime, and manganoan pectolite. Bortolanite shows complex compositional zoning with götzenite and is visually indistinguishable from götzenite. Bortolanite is pale-yellow to brown and has a vitreous luster. Cleavage is perfect parallel to {100}. Mohs hardness is 5. Bortolanite fluoresces weak yellow under ultraviolet light (100–280 nm). Dcalc. = 3.195 g/cm3. Bortolanite is biaxial (+) with refractive indices (λ = 589.3 nm) α = 1.673(2), β = 1.677(2), γ = 1.690(2); 2Vmeas. = 56(2)°, 2Vcalc. = 58.4°. Chemical analysis by electron microprobe gave Nb2O5 1.07, HfO2 0.20, ZrO2 6.70, TiO2 9.94, SiO2 32.49, Gd2O3 0.12, Nd2O3 0.37, Ce2O3 1.25, La2O3 0.65, Y2O3 0.31, FeO 0.59, MnO 1.46, CaO 31.15, Na2O 8.36, F 6.95, O=F –2.93, sum 98.68 wt.%. The empirical formula based on 18 (O + F) apfu is (Ca1.88La0.03Ce0.06Nd0.02Gd0.01)Σ2[Ca1.56(Zr0.41Hf0.01Y0.02)Σ0.44]Σ2(Na0.85Ca0.15)Σ1(Na1.18Ca0.60Mn0.16Fe2+0.06)Σ2(Ti0.94Nb0.06)Σ1(Si4.07O14)(O1.24F0.76)Σ2F2, Z = 1. The simplified formula is Ca2(Ca,Zr)2Na(Na,Ca)2Ti(Si2O7)2(O,F)2F2. Bortolanite is triclinic, space group P, a 9.615(3), b 5.725(2), c 7.316(2) Å, α 89.91(1), β 101.14(1), γ 100.91(1)°, V 387.7(3) Å3. The crystal structure was refined to R1 = 3.19% on the basis of 2194 unique reflections [F > 4σ(F)] measured using a Bruker APEX II ULTRA three-circle diffractometer with a rotating-anode generator (MoKα), multilayer optics, and an APEX II 4K CCD detector. The crystal structure of bortolanite is a framework of TS (Titanium-Silicate) blocks [structure type B3(RG)], where the TS block consists of HOH sheets (H-heteropolyhedral, O-octahedral). The TS block exhibits linkage and stereochemistry typical for the rinkite group where Ti (+ Nb + Zr) = 1 apfu. The O sheet is composed of Ti-dominant MO(1) octahedra, [8]Na-dominant MO(2) polyhedra and (Na,Ca) MO(3) octahedra. In the H sheet in bortolanite, Si2O7 groups link to (Ca1.5Zr0.5) MH and Ca-dominant AP octahedra. Along a, TS blocks link directly through common edges of MH and AP polyhedra and common vertices of MH, AP, and Si polyhedra of the H sheets belonging to two TS blocks. The name bortolanite is after the locality: the Bortolan quarry in the Poços de Caldas massif, Brazil. Bortolanite is isostructural with three rinkite-group minerals: fogoite-(Y), hainite-(Y), and götzenite.

Protocaseyite, [Al4(OH)6(H2O)12][V10O28]·8H2O, is a new mineral (IMA2020-090) occurring in low-temperature, post-mining, secondary mineral assemblages at the Burro mine, Slick Rock district, San Miguel County, Colorado, U.S.A. Crystals of protocaseyite are saffron-yellow, thick blades, with pale orange-yellow streak, vitreous luster, brittle tenacity, curved fracture, two very good cleavages, a Mohs hardness of 2, and a density of 2.45(2) g/cm3. The optical properties of protocaseyite could be only partly determined: biaxial with α = 1.755(5), β < 1.80, γ > 1.80 (white light); pleochroic with X and Y yellow, Z orange (X ≈ Y < Z). Electron-probe microanalysis and crystal-structure solution and refinement provided the empirical formula [(Al3.89Mg0.11Ca0.02)Σ4.02(OH)6(H2O)12][H0.06V10O28]·8H2O. Protocaseyite is triclinic, P1, a = 9.435(2), b = 10.742(3), c = 11.205(3) Å, α = 75.395(7), β = 71.057(10), γ = 81.286(6)°, V = 1036.4(5) Å3, and Z = 1. The crystal structure (R1 = 0.026 for 4032 Io>2 σI reflections) contains both the [V10O28]6− decavanadate polyoxoanion and a novel [Al4(OH)6(H2O)12]6+ polyoxocation.

Summary: Background & Aims: Healthcare service provision in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is often designed to meet targets set by healthcare providers rather than those of patients. It is unclear whether this meets the needs of patients, as assessed by patients themselves. This nationwide study assessed patients' experience of IBD and the healthcare they received, aiming to identify factors in IBD healthcare provision associated with perceived high‐quality care. Methods: Using the 2019 IBD Standards as a framework, a national benchmarking tool for quality assessment in IBD was developed by IBD UK, comprising a Patient Survey and Service Self‐Assessment. Results: In all, 134 IBD services and 9757 patients were responded. Perceived quality of care was lowest in young adults then increased with age, was higher in males and those >2 years since diagnosis. No hospital services met all the National IBD Standards for recommended workforce numbers. Key metrics associated with patient‐reported high‐quality care were as follows: identification as a tertiary centre, patient information availability, shared decision‐making, rapid response to contact for advice, access to urgent review, joint medical/surgical clinics and access to research (all p < 0.001). Higher numbers of IBD nurse specialists in a service was strongly associated with patients receiving regular reviews and having confidence in self‐management and reporting high‐quality care. Conclusions: This extensive patient and healthcare provider survey emphasises the importance of aspects of care less often measured by clinicians, such as communication, shared decision‐making and provision of information, and demonstrates that IBD nurse specialists are crucial to meeting the needs of people living with IBD.

Uvite, CaMg3(Al5Mg)(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3(OH), is a new mineral of the tourmaline supergroup. It occurs in the Facciatoia quarry, San Piero in Campo, Elba Island, Italy (42°45′04.55″N, 10°12′50.89″E) at the centre of a narrow (2–3 cm wide) vein composed of aggregates of dark brown to black tourmaline, penetrating (magnesite + dolomite)-rich hydrothermally altered metaserpentinite. Crystals are euhedral and up to 1 cm in size, brown with a vitreous lustre, conchoidal fracture and grey streak. Uvite has a Mohs hardness of ~7½, a calculated density of 3.115 g/cm3 and is uniaxial (–). Uvite has trigonal symmetry, space group R3m, a = 15.9519(10) Å, c = 7.2222(5) Å, V = 1597.3(1) Å3 and Z = 3. The crystal structure was refined to R1 = 1.77% using 1666 unique reflections collected with MoKα X-rays. The closest end-member compositions of valid tourmaline species are fluor-uvite and feruvite, to which uvite is related by the substitutions W(OH)– ↔ WF– and YMg2+ ↔ YFe2+, respectively. The occurrence of a solid-solution between uvite and magnesio-lucchesiite, according to the substitution ZMg2+ + W(OH)– ↔ ZAl3+ + WO2–, is supported by experimental data. The new mineral was approved by the IMA–CNMNC (IMA 2019-113). Uvite from Facciatoia formed by the reaction between B-rich fluids, released during the crystallisation process of LCT pegmatites, and the surrounding metaserpentinites, altered by contact metamorphism in the aureole of the Miocene Mt. Capanne monzogranitic pluton.

Hydrogen (δ2H) and oxygen (δ18O) stable isotopes are used to trace fluid sources, metals, and contaminants in the environment and Earth's subsurface. Tourmaline-supergroup minerals provide an opportunity to quantify both δ2H and δ18O from the same grain using in situ analytical techniques (e.g., Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry – SIMS). These minerals occur in a wide variety of geological environments and have a wide range of chemical compositions. However, large differences in chemical composition are problematic during SIMS analysis, as instrumental mass fractionation (IMF) often varies with the chemical composition of the mineral. Therefore, calibration models derived by analyzing tourmalines of different chemical composition must be developed for accurate analysis by SIMS. Hydrogen and oxygen isotope analysis was done on six reference tourmaline samples using a CAMECA 7f SIMS instrument operating at extreme energy filtering. Spot-to-spot repeatability for tourmalines was in the range 4–5‰ and 0.6–1.0‰ for δ2H and δ18O, respectively. There is a strong correlation between IMF and several elements (B, Si, Ca, Fe, and Fe#). Iron content is the most robust predictor of IMF, and we report two calibration curves for the correction of δ2H and δ18O measured by SIMS using reference tourmaline crystals with different Fe contents, ranging from 0.00 to 14.00 wt.% Fe. This is the first calibration curve used to correct for the fractionation of hydrogen isotope ratios in tourmaline as measured by SIMS. Tourmaline-supergroup minerals require a suite of at least three, with a range of Fe content, to ensure accurate and precise H and O analysis by SIMS. Crystallographic orientation effects were not observed for these tourmalines.

Bridgesite-(Ce), (IMA2019-034), was discovered at Tynebottom Mine, Cumbria, UK. It occurs as thin (1–2 μm) translucent blue crystals with a lath-like to acicular habit, aggregated into thin crusts and is associated mainly with brochantite, malachite, serpierite, devilline, gypsum, aragonite, jarosite, pyrite, lanthanite-(Ce) and undifferentiated iron oxyhydroxides, it is often intergrown with these other minerals. The lustre, hardness, cleavage and parting could not be determined, nor could density be measured due to crystal size. It has a pale blue streak and is brittle with a splintery fracture. Bridgesite-(Ce) is biaxial (–), shows no pleochroism and has refractive indices (white light): α = 1.526(2), β = 1.564(2), γ = 1.572(2) and 2V(calc) = 48.3°. The empirical formula calculated on the basis of 44 negative charges is Ca0.86REEΣ1.99Al0.07Cu5.95(SO4)3.99(SiO4)0.05(PO4)0.02(OH)11.52⋅8H2O. The idealised formula is CaCe2Cu6(SO4)4(OH)12⋅8H2O, requiring (wt.%): 3.91 CaO, 22.89 Ce2O3, 33.28 CuO, 22.33 SO3 and 17.59 H2O. Bridgesite-(Ce) is monoclinic, space group C2/m, a = 24.801(5), b = 6.3520(13), c = 11.245(2) Å, β = 114.51(3)°, V = 1611.9(6) Å and Z = 2. The five most intense X-ray diffraction peaks in the measured pattern are [d in Å (I, %) (hkl)]: 11.3 (100) (200), 6.391 (15) (201), 2.770 (8) (420), 3.194 (6) (402) and 4.858 (5) (310). The crystal structure was solved using single crystal data and refined to an R1 index of 5.86%. Bridgesite-(Ce) contains three distinct Cu sites containing Cu2+, two are coordinated octahedrally and one is square pyramidal. The octahedra form chains through edge sharing parallel to the b-axis which are linked by the square pyramid to form sheets oriented parallel to {100}. Sulfate tetrahedra decorate the sheets which are held together by interstitial REE3+, Ca2+ and hydrogen bonding. The structure is unique. Despite apparent similarity in chemical formula, bridgesite-(Ce) is not closely related to any other natural Cu-sulfate mineral. An FTIR absorption spectra is presented for reference purposes.

Shkatulkalite, ideally Na5TiNb2(Si2O7)2O3F(H2O)7, is a lamprophyllite-group (seidozerite supergroup) TS-block mineral from the Lovozero massif, Kola Peninsula, Russia. The crystal structure of shkatulkalite was refined as triclinic, space group P, a 5.464(1), b 7.161(1), c 15.573(1) Å, α 90.00(3), β 95.75(3), γ 90.00(3)°, V 606.3(4) Å3, R1 = 7.26%. The previously given chemical analysis has been modified to better fit the crystal structure: Nb2O5 24.15, TiO2 11.35, SiO2 27.22, BaO 1.15, SrO 2.20, MnO 1.68, CaO 0.46, K2O 0.29, Na2O 14.78, H2O 15.27, F 1.61, O = F −0.68, sum 99.48 wt.%; H2O was determined from structure-refinement results. The empirical formula was calculated on 25.27 (O + F) apfu (in accord with the crystal structure): (Na1.40Sr0.19Ba0.07K0.05)Σ1.71(Na2.86Mn0.10Ca0.07)Σ3.03(Nb1.62Ti1.27Mn0.11)Σ3Si4.03O24.52H15.11F0.75, Z = 1. The ideal structural formula is as follows: Na2Nb2Na3Ti(Si2O7)2O2(FO)(H2O)4(H2O)3. The crystal structure of shkatulkalite [basic structure type B5(LG)] is a combination of a TS (titanium-silicate) block and an I (intermediate) block. The TS block consists of HOH sheets (H-heteropolyhedral, O-octahedral). The TS block exhibits linkage and stereochemistry typical for the lamprophyllite group where Ti (+ Nb + Fe3+ + Mg) = 3 apfu. The O sheet is composed of Ti-dominant MO(1) and Na-dominant MO(2,3) octahedra. In the H sheet in shkatulkalite, Si2O7 groups link to Nb-dominant MH octahedra. The AP site occurs in the plane of the H sheet and splits into AP(1) and AP(2) sites, occupied by Na at 70% and Sr (less Ba and K) at 11%. The I block consists of H2O groups. The I block of shkatulkalite is topologically identical to those in the derivative structures of kazanskyite and nechelyustovite. The structure of the lamprophyllite-group mineral shkatulkalite has a counterpart structure in the murmanite group (Ti = 4 apfu): kolskyite, ideally Na2CaTi4(Si2O7)2O4(H2O)7 [basic structure type B7(MG)]: the two structures have TS blocks of different topology and similar I blocks, mainly occupied by H2O groups.

Chain, ribbon and tube silicates are based on one-dimensional polymerizations of (TO4) n− tetrahedra, where T = Si4+ plus P5+, V5+, As5+, Al3+, Fe3+ and B3+. Such polymerizations may be represented by infinite graphs (designated chain graphs) in which vertices represent tetrahedra and edges represent linkages between tetrahedra. The valence-sum rule of bond-valence theory limits the maximum degree of any vertex to 4 and the number of edges linking two vertices to 1 (corner-sharing tetrahedra). The unit cell (or repeat unit) of the chain graph generates the chain graph through action of translational symmetry operators. The (infinite) chain graph is converted into a finite graph by wrapping edges that exit the unit cell such that they link to vertices within the unit cell that are translationally equivalent to the vertices to which they link in the chain graph, and the wrapped graph preserves all topological information of the chain graph. A symbolic algebra is developed that represents the degree of each vertex in the wrapped graph. The wrapped graph is represented by its adjacency matrix which is modified to indicate the direction of wrapped edges, up (+c) or down (−c) along the direction of polymerization. The symbolic algebra is used to generate all possible vertex connectivities for graphs with ≤8 vertices. This method of representing chain graphs by finite matrices may now be inverted to generate all non-isomorphic chain graphs with ≤8 vertices for all possible vertex connectivities. MatLabR2019b code is provided for computationally intensive steps of this method and ∼3000 finite graphs (and associated adjacency matrices) and ∼1500 chain graphs are generated.

O navio foi capturado pelafragata inglesa Morgiana em 1821 e levado ao Rio de Janeiro. No Rio, a comissão mista anglo-portuguesacondenou o navio pelo crime de comércio ilícito de escravos. Os africanos do Emília ficaram na condição de“africanos livres” sob a custódia do governo local por um período de quatorze anos. Foram distribuídos entreinstituições públicas e concessionários particulares para servir como “trabalhadores livres”. Na prática suasexperiências de trabalho foram semelhantes às de escravos. Depois de quatorze anos, um grupo dos africanoslivres do Emília voltou à África juntos. O artigo propõe que a identidade mais importante para reforçar asrelações entre os africanos não foi uma identidade étnica, mas sim uma identidade nascida no Emília, umaidentidade de companheiros de viagem. Abstract: This article analyzes the lives of a group of Africans from a slave ship, the Emilia. The ship was seizedby the British frigate Morgiana in 1821 and taken to Rio de Janeiro. There, it was condemned by the British andPortuguese mixed commission court for illegal slave trading. The recaptives from the Emilia became “liberatedAfricans” and remained under the custody of the local government for fourteen years. They were distributedamong public institutions and private hirers to serve as “free laborers”. In practice, their labor experiences wereclose to slavery. After fourteen years, a group of the Africans from the Emilia went back to Africa together. Thearticle claims that rather than an ethnic identity, the most important bond among them was the identity theycreated during the middle passage on board the Emília, a shipmate identity.
