AimsTo date, potential differences in outcomes for immigrants and non-immigrants with a cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), in a European setting, remain underutilized and unknown. Hence, we examined the efficacy of CRT measured by heart failure (HF)-related hospitalizations and all-cause mortality among immigrants and non-immigrants.Methods and resultsAll immigrants and non-immigrants who underwent first-time CRT implantation in Denmark (2000–2017) were identified from nationwide registries and followed for up to 5 years. Differences in HF related hospitalizations and all-cause mortality were evaluated by Cox regression analyses. From 2000 to 2017, 369 of 10 741 (3.4%) immigrants compared with 7855 of 223 509 (3.5%) non-immigrants with a HF diagnosis underwent CRT implantation. The origins of the immigrants were Europe (61.2%), Middle East (20.1%), Asia-Pacific (11.9%), Africa (3.5%), and America (3.3%). We found similar high uptake of HF guideline-directed pharmacotherapy before and after CRT and a consistent reduction in HF-related hospitalizations the year before vs. the year after CRT (61% vs. 39% for immigrants and 57% vs. 35% for non-immigrants). No overall difference in 5-year mortality among immigrants and non-immigrants was seen after CRT [24.1% and 25.8%, respectively, P-value = 0.50, hazard ratio (HR) = 1.2, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.8–1.7]. However, immigrants of Middle Eastern origin had a higher mortality rate (HR = 2.2, 95% CI: 1.2–4.1) compared with non-immigrants. Cardiovascular causes were responsible for the majority of deaths irrespective of immigration status (56.7% and 63.9%, respectively).ConclusionNo overall differences in efficacy of CRT in improving outcomes between immigrants and non-immigrants were identified. Although numbers were low, a higher mortality rate among immigrants of Middle Eastern origin was identified compared with non-immigrants. The "Blue Jay" is a 12 ft., LOX and paraffin hybrid rocket with a designed total impulse of 20,330 Ns. The rocket will have its maiden flight summer 2022 at the Friends of Amateur Rocketry with a target altitude of 10,000 ft. above ground level. The rocket is expected to weigh around 100 lbs. dry. This is BYU's first hybrid rocket, and one of the first LOX paraffin hybrids to be flown. The rocket is divided into four subsystems: structures and recovery, electronics and controls, plumbing, and propulsion.

Brugada syndrome (BrS) is a cardiac arrhythmia disorder associated with sudden death in young adults. With the exception of SCN5A, encoding the cardiac sodium channel Na(V)1.5, susceptibility genes remain largely unknown. Here we performed a genome-wide association meta-analysis comprising 2,820 unrelated cases with BrS and 10,001 controls, and identified 21 association signals at 12 loci (10 new). Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-heritability estimates indicate a strong polygenic influence. Polygenic risk score analyses based on the 21 susceptibility variants demonstrate varying cumulative contribution of common risk alleles among different patient subgroups, as well as genetic associations with cardiac electrical traits and disorders in the general population. The predominance of cardiac transcription factor loci indicates that transcriptional regulation is a key feature of BrS pathogenesis. Furthermore, functional studies conducted on MAPRE2, encoding the microtubule plus-end binding protein EB2, point to microtubule-related trafficking effects on Na(V)1.5 expression as a new underlying molecular mechanism. Taken together, these findings broaden our understanding of the genetic architecture of BrS and provide new insights into its molecular underpinnings. Background: Symptomatic children with catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) are at risk for recurrent arrhythmic events. Beta-blockers (BBs) decrease this risk, but studies comparing individual BBs in sizeable cohorts are lacking. We aimed to assess the association between risk for arrhythmic events and type of BB in a large cohort of symptomatic children with CPVT. Methods: From two international registries of patients with CPVT, RYR2 variant-carrying symptomatic children (defined as syncope or sudden cardiac arrest prior to BB initiation and age at start of BB therapy

The focus on individual responsibility in American social policy has meant that communities and extended family have historically been important sources of security in American society. However, since at least the 1950s, critics have considered the white American middle class as a proponent of an individualized mainstream culture that undermines the moral force of communities and extended families. The white American middle class thus appears exceptionally individualized with no sense of obligation towards fellow citizens, communities, or extended family.Jacob Didia-Hansen interviewed 45 white middle-class Americans from the city of Boston, MA, in the liberal northeast and the city of Knoxville, TN, in the conservative south. He seeks to find out if the white middle class is as individualized and outer-directed as they are often portrayed. His findings suggests that his interviewees appear very little outer-directed and that they are able to mobilize moral arguments rooted in their regional moral culture when discussing complex topics such as welfare, public education, community commitment, and family obligations. These findings call for more studies in the influence of regional moral culture in the moral lifeworlds of ordinary social actors.

The last 60 years of research striving to explain the post-earnings announcement drift (PEAD) have resulted in numerous potential explanations. This ”zoo” of explanations, limited academic consensus, and a literature relying on thousands of earnings announcement make researchers able to detect subtle and complex effects with little practical significance. This paper exploits new capabilities of inference via machine learning to systematically examine leading variables explaining the PEAD. First, we identify a small set of variables associated with momentum, liquidity, and limited arbitrage that directly and consistently affect the PEAD. Secondly, we demonstrate the danger of hand-picking a small set of control variables, which can lead to unreliable results, overestimation of coefficients, and underestimation of their standard errors. Finally, we explore multiple variables related to general equity risk premia and find a more prominent role for price trends than otherwise suggested. We demonstrate the benefits of merging traditional hypothesis-driven research with new methods from machine learning that enable high-dimensional inferences. As the post-earnings announcement drift (PEAD) literature is governed by a "zoo" of explanations, limited academic consensus on model design, and the reliance on massive data, it will serve as a leading example to demonstrate the challenges of high-dimensional analysis. We identify a small set of variables associated with momentum, liquidity, and limited arbitrage that directly and consistently explain PEAD. The framework can be applied broadly in finance.

We analyze bubble formations in house prices under the covid-19 pandemic in 382 metropolitan areas in the U.S. with a special attention to the role of population density. We use a robust sieve-bootstrap version of the right-tailed unit root test procedure to identify periods of explosiveness in price-rent ratios across metro areas when controlling for fundamentals such as mortgage debt financing costs and the wealth of households. The bubble tests reveal evidence of explosive house prices during the covid-19 pandemic but with important cross-area differences. In contrast to earlier bubble episodes, we find that the frequency and size of bubble formations under the pandemic have been stronger in low-density metro areas compared to high-density metro areas.

This report presents the master thesis project carried out by Pierre Lindgren & Jacob Thagaard Hansen at KTH Royal Institute of technology for IKEA of Sweden. The project aimed to explore the capabilities of so-called smart textiles, as well as to establish clear user needs which these can meet. Based on this, a design proposal for a furniture concept was developed, with the main purpose of offering the client IKEA clearer paths for further research and development on the chosen materials. The final design proposal, which was named ODENSE, was developed based on the needs of users who want to be more active in their homes. The design proposal meets their need to have easy access to their training equipment, by way of a multi-functional storage. The storage solution offers additional functionality in the form of light, thus occupying the same space and providing the same functions as a floor lamp and a small storage shelf. The design proposal potentially offers additional environmental benefits with regard to energy consumption and CO2 emission as it merges two products and functions. As the furniture concept combines the functions light and storage, it also has the opportunity to meet more needs than what it was initially developed for. Thus, Odense has great potential to be further developed to meet the needs of even more users. The project group found great benefit in the concurrent background research on smart textiles, as it enriched the user study significantly and opened up the minds of both the interviewees and the project group members to the future development opportunities. Projektet gick ut på att utforska de möjligheter som så kallade smarta textilier erbjuder, samt att etablera tydliga användarbehov som dessa kan uppfylla. Utifrån detta kunde ett designförslag för ett möbelkoncept tas fram, med huvudändamålet att erbjuda uppdragsgivaren Ikea tydligare spår för vidare utveckling och efterforskning om materialen som valts. Det slutgiltiga designförslaget, som döptes Odense, togs fram utifrån behoven hos användare som önskar vara mer aktiva i sina hem. Designförslaget möter deras behov av att ha enkel tillgång till deras träningsutrustning, detta via multifunktionell förvaring. Förvaringslösningen erbjuder ytterligare funktionalitet i form av ljus. Designförslaget erbjuder potentiellt även ytterligare miljörelaterade förbättringar med avseende på energiförbrukning och CO2-utsläpp, eftersom det slår samman två produkter och funktioner. Då möbelkonceptet kombinerar funktionerna ljus och förvaring har det även möjlighet att möta fler behov än vad konceptet initialt togs fram för. Således har Odense stor potential att vidareutvecklas för att möta ännu fler användares behov. Projektgruppen fann stor nytta i den breda efterforskningen om smarta textilier, då den berikade användarstudien betydligt och öppnade upp både de intervjuades och projektgrupp-medlemmarnas sinnen till de framtida utvecklingsmöjligheterna.

Background Sudden cardiac death (SCD) constitutes a major health problem worldwide. We investigated whether birth weight (BW), small for gestational age (SGA), and large for gestational age are associated with altered risk of SCD among the young (aged 1–36years). Methods and Results We included all people born in Denmark from 1973 to 2008 utilizing the Danish Medical Birth Register. All SCDs in Denmark in 2000 to 2009 have previously been identified. We defined 5 BW groups, SGA, and large for gestational age as exposure and SCD as the outcome. We estimated the age‐specific relative risk of SCD with 95% CI. Additionally, we investigated if SGA and large for gestational age are associated with pathological findings at autopsy. The study population for the BW analyses comprised 2234501 people with 389 SCD cases, and the SGA and large for gestational age analyses comprised 1786281 people with 193 SCD cases. The relative risk for SCD was 6.69 for people with BW between 1500 and 2499g (95% CI, 2.38–18.80, PP=0.003) at age 5years. BW 2500 to 3400g was the reference group. Compared with an appropriate gestational age, the relative risk for SGA was 2.85 (95% CI, 1.35–6.00, P=0.006) at age 10years. For the autopsied cases, the relative risk of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome at age 5years was 4.19 for SGA (95% CI, 1.08–16.22, P=0.038). Conclusions We found an association between BW and SCD in the young, with an increased risk among SGA infants. In addition, we found an association between SGA and sudden arrhythmic death syndrome.

This is a case report of a 72-year-old male with a newly diagnosed prostate cancer, who was treated with androgen deprivation therapy and anti-androgen. The patient was diagnosed with congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS), and a markedly worsening of the QT-prolongation was observed, after the hormonal therapy was initiated. He ultimately suffered an initially resuscitated cardiac arrest but did not survive to discharge. Pharmaceutical treatments in patients with LQTS should always be handled with caution, and if a treatment with a known or probable QT-prolonging drug is initiated, a cardiologist should be consulted.

This paper uses a novel and direct retail investor attention proxy and provide evidence that retail investor attention is important for information efficiency around earnings announcements. The main finding is the presence of asymmetric patterns in subsequent responses to earnings surprises when retail investors are the most attentive. If earnings news is bad, a strong reversal is present, which is consistent with an attention-induced buying pressure. If the news is good, then even though the announcement must also have been attention-grabbing, no subsequent buying pressure is observed. The effects are intensified for stocks with higher limits to arbitrage, and when institutional investors are the least attentive.

Ventricular fibrillation (VF) during acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is an important contributor to sudden cardiac death. Large animal models are widely used to study AMI-induced arrhythmia, but the mode of AMI induction ranges from thoracotomy and surgical ligation of a coronary vessel (open chest) to minimally invasive techniques, including balloon occlusion (closed chest). How the choice of induction affects arrhythmia development is unclear. The aim of this study was to compare an open-chest and a closed-chest model with regard to hemodynamics, electrophysiology, and arrhythmia development. Forty-two female Danish Landrace pigs (20 open chest, 22 closed chest) were anesthetized, and occlusion of the mid-left anterior descending coronary artery was performed for 60 min. Opening the chest reduced blood pressure and cardiac output (Δ −22 mmHg, Δ −1.5 L/min from baseline, bothP< 0.001 intragroup). Heart rate decreased with opening of the chest but increased with balloon placement (P< 0.001). AMI-induced ST elevation was lower in the open-chest group (P< 0.001). Premature ventricular contractions occurred in two distinct phases (0–15 and 15–40 min), the latter of which was delayed in the open-chest group (P= 0.005). VF occurred in 7 out of 20 and 12 out of 22 pigs in the open-chest and closed-chest groups, respectively (P= 0.337), with longer time-to-VF in the open-chest group (23.4 ± 1.2 min in open chest and 17.8 ± 1.4 min in closed chest;P= 0.007). In summary, opening the chest altered hemodynamic parameters and delayed the onset of ventricular arrhythmias. Hence, in the search for mechanisms and novel treatments of AMI-induced arrhythmia, caution should be taken when choosing between or comparing the results from these two models.

This is a case of a two-year-old boy with a ganglion arising from the sternoclavicular joint. Ganglia are rare in the pediatric population, with less than 2% occurring under the age of 2 years old. Additionally, sternoclavicular joint ganglia are also exceedingly rare. The case illustrates the importance of keeping ganglion within the differential diagnosis for palpable subcutaneous masses, even in young children, especially when they are seen to connect to the joint.

Aims The aim of this study was to compare nationwide incidence rate (IR) of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in persons aged 1–49 years with and without diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods and results The study population consisted of all persons in Denmark aged 1–49 years in 2000–09, which equals 27.1 million person-years. All 14294 deaths in the 10-year period were included. By using the highly descriptive Danish death certificates, 1698 cases of sudden and unexpected death were identified. Through review of autopsy reports, discharge summaries, and the Danish registries, we identified 1363 cases of SCD. The Danish Register of Medicinal Product Statistics was used to identify persons with type 1 DM and type 2 DM. Among the 14294 decedents, there were 669 with DM, of which 118 suffered SCD (9% of all SCD), making SCD the leading cause of death among young persons with DM. Among those aged 1–35 years, the IR of SCD-DM was 21.9 per 100000 person-years compared to 2.6 per 100000 person-years among persons without DM [IR ratio 8.6, 95% confidence interval (CI) 5.8–28.6]. Within the age range 36–49 years, the IR among persons with DM was 119.8 per 100000 person-years compared to 19.7 per 100000 person-years among persons without DM (IR ratio 6.1, 95% CI 4.7–7.8). Conclusion We found that young persons with DM aged 1–35 years had >8-fold higher SCD IR compared to young persons without DM. Our study highlights the need for early cardiovascular risk monitoring and assessment in young persons with DM.

Initial analyses demonstrate the feasibility and reliability of a federated analysis approach. The consortium now plans to initiate and test novel hypotheses as well as supporting replication and validation analyses for other investigators.

Background: Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of post-neonatal infant death in high-income countries. Central respiratory system dysfunction seems to contribute to these deaths. Excitation that drives contraction of skeletal respiratory muscles is controlled by the sodium channel NaV1.4, which is encoded by the gene SCN4A. Variants in NaV1.4 that directly alter skeletal muscle excitability can cause myotonia, periodic paralysis, congenital myopathy, and myasthenic syndrome. SCN4A variants have also been found in infants with life-threatening apnoea and laryngospasm. We therefore hypothesised that rare, functionally disruptive SCN4A variants might be over-represented in infants who died from SIDS. Methods: We did a case-control study, including two consecutive cohorts that included 278 SIDS cases of European ancestry and 729 ethnically matched controls without a history of cardiovascular, respiratory, or neurological disease. BACKGROUND: Detailed information on the profile of Brugada syndrome (BrS) patients presenting their first arrhythmic event (AE) after prophylactic implantation of a cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is limited. OBJECTIVES: 1) To compare clinical, electrocardiographic, electrophysiologic and genetic profiles of patients who exhibited their first documented AE as aborted cardiac arrest (CA) (group A) with those in whom the AE was documented after prophylactic ICD implantation (group B); 2) To characterize group B patients' profile using the Class II indications for ICD implantation established by HRS/EHRA/APHRS Expert Consensus Statement in 2013. METHODS: A survey of 23 centers from 10 Western and 4 Asian countries enabled data collection of 678 BrS patients with AE (group A, n=426; group B, n=252). Background: Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in young individuals globally. Data on the burden of sudden death by stroke are sparse in the young. Aims: The aim of this study was to report mortality rates, cause of death, stroke subtype, and symptoms in children and young adults who suffered sudden death by stroke. Methods: We conducted a retrospective, nationwide study including all deaths within Danish borders between 2000–2009 and 2007–2009 in persons aged 1–35 years and 36–49 years, respectively. Two physicians identified all sudden death cases through review of all death certificates. All available autopsy reports and records from hospitals and general practitioners were retrieved and a neurologist identified all sudden death by stroke cases. Results: Of the 14,567 deaths in the 10-year period, there were 1,698 sudden death cases, of which 52 (3%) were sudden death by stroke. There was a male predominance (56%) and the median age was 33 years. The incidence of sudden death by stroke in individuals aged 1–49 years was 0.19 deaths per 100,000 person-years. Stroke was hemorrhagic in 94% of cases, whereof subarachnoid hemorrhage was the cause of death in 63% of cases. Seventeen (33%) cases contacted the healthcare system because of neurological symptoms, whereof one was suspected of having a stroke (6%). Conclusions: Sudden death by stroke in children and young adults occurs primarily due to hemorrhagic stroke. We report a high frequency of neurological symptoms prior to sudden death by stroke. Increased awareness among healthcare professionals towards stroke symptoms in children and young adults may lead to earlier detection of stroke, and thereby potentially lowering the incidence of sudden death by stroke.

The proliferation of business intelligence applications moves most organizations into an era where data becomes an essential part of the success factors. More and more business focus has thus been added to the integration and processing of data in the enterprise environment. Developing and maintaining Extraction-Transform-Load (ETL) processes becomes critical in most data-driven organizations. External Data Sources (EDSs) often change their schema which potentially leaves the ETL processes that extract datafrom those EDSs invalid. Repairing these ETL processes is time-consuming and tedious. As a remedy, we propose MAIME as a tool to (semi-)automatically maintain ETL processes. MAIME works with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and uses a graph model as a layer of abstractionon top of SSIS Data Flow tasks (ETL processes). We introduce a graph alteration algorithm which propagates detected EDS schema changes through the graph. Modifications done to a graph are directly applied to the underlying ETL process. It can be configured how MAIME handles EDS schema changes for different SSIS transformations. For the considered set of transformations, MAIME can maintain SSIS Data Flow tasks (semi-)automatically. Compared to doingthis manually, the amount of user inputs is decreased by a factor of 9.5 and the spent time is reduced by a factor of 9.8 in an evaluation.

Objectives This study sought to describe the use of pharmacotherapy in a nationwide cohort of young patients with sudden cardiac death (SCD). Background Several drugs have been associated with an increased risk of SCD and sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS). It remains unclear how pharmacotherapy may contribute to the overall burden of SCD in the general population. Methods This was a nationwide study that included all deaths that occurred between 2000 and 2009 and between 2007 and 2009 in people age 1 to 35 years and 36 to 49 years, respectively. Two physicians identified all SCDs through review of death certificates. Autopsy reports were collected. Pharmacotherapy prescribed within 90 days before SCD was identified in the Danish Registry of Medicinal Product Statistics. Results We identified 1,363 SCDs; median age was 38 years (interquartile range: 29 to 45 years), and 72% (n = 975) were men. Autopsy was performed in 55%. Overall, 58% of SCD cases (n = 786) received at least 1 drug within 90 days before death. The most common drugs were analgesic drugs (n = 239; 18%), antihypertensive drugs (n = 234; 17%), and antibiotic drugs (n = 218; 16%). After multivariable adjustment, prescription of “brugadogenic” drugs or >1 QT-prolonging drug was associated with an increased risk of SADS compared with explained SCD (odds ratio: 2.16 [95% confidence interval: 1.12 to 4.17] and 2.91 [95% confidence interval: 1.46 to 5.81], respectively). Conclusions Pharmacotherapy was identified in 58% of the SCD cases. After multivariable adjustment, there was a 2- and 3-fold increased risk of SADS compared with explained SCD in patients receiving brugadogenic drugs or >1 QT-prolonging drug, respectively. Identification of high-risk patients is warranted to lower the burden of SCD.

Objective: Estrogen-related receptors (ERRs) are important regulators of energy metabolism. Here we investigated the hypothesis that ERR gamma impacts on differentiation and function of brown adipocytes. Design and Methods: We characterize the expression of ERR gamma in adipose tissues and cell models and investigate the effects of modulating ERR? activity on UCP1 gene expression and metabolic features of brown and white adipocytes. Results: ERR gamma was preferentially expressed in brown compared to white fat depots, and ERR gamma was induced during cold-induced browning of subcutaneous white adipose tissue and brown adipogenesis. Overexpression of ERR gamma positively regulated uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) expression levels during brown adipogenesis. This ERR gamma-induced augmentation of UCP1 expression was independent of the presence of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor coactivator-1 (PGC-1 alpha) but was associated with increased rates of fatty acid oxidation in adrenergically stimulated cells. ERR? did not influence mitochondrial biogenesis, and its reduced expression in white adipocytes could not explain their low expression level of UCP1. Conclusions: Through its augmenting effect on expression of UCP1, ERR gamma may physiologically be involved in increasing the potential for energy expenditure in brown adipocytes, a function that is becoming of therapeutic interest. Calcium is a crucial second messenger in the cardiovascular system. However, calcium may also be an extracellular first messenger through a G-protein-coupled receptor that senses extracellular concentration (Ca(2+)(o)), the calcium-sensing receptor (CaR). The most prominent physiological function of the CaR is to maintain the extracellular Ca(2+) level in a very tight range by regulating the circulating levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH). This control over PTH and Ca(2+) levels is partially lost in patients suffering from primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism. Allosteric modulators of the CaR (calcimimetics) are the first drugs in their class to become available for clinical use and have been shown to successfully treat certain forms of primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism. In addition, several studies suggest beneficial effects of calcimimetics on cardiovascular risk factors associated with hyperparathyroidism. Although a plethora of studies demonstrated the CaR in heart and blood vessels, exact roles of the receptor in the cardiovascular system still remain to be elucidated. However, several studies point toward a possibility that the CaR might be involved in the regulation of vascular tone. This review will summarize the current knowledge on the possible functions of the CaR and calcimimetics on blood pressure regulation.

The third subject is our current experimental work on creating micron-sized optical resonators with fibres, particularly for the purpose of interfacing with nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond nanocrystals.
