According to field observations showed that the community in Limpok Village, Darussalam Sub-District has not fully utilized their yards for growing vegetables. The purpose of this community service activity is to provide counseling on vegetable cultivation to improve family nutrition and their immunity in the Covid-19 era in Gampong Limpok. The dissemination of counseling materials to participants helped carry out the activity utilizing the counseling approach. The Community Service Team and the participants used interactive discussion techniques to gauge the participants' knowledge before and after counseling. The use of the yard for the production of vegetables and varieties of vegetables with high nutrition was discussed in the counseling materials. The women of PKK Gampong Limpok were the counseling's target audience. The participants in the outreach activities excitedly listened and comprehended the importance of vegetables in preserving body immunity in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the correct stages of various vegetable growing. Following the guidance given by Community Service Team, it can be concluded that the participants have understood how to use their yard as a place for cultivating vegetables that can be used as a source of nutrition for families and to increase body immunity in the Covid-19 era and in daily life. Additionally, the participants hopes that the activities can continue with the direct technical practice of planting vegetables that have the potential to be cultivated.

Perubahan kode genetik dapat menjadi pemicu perubahan fungsi protein yang dihasilkannya. Perubahan genetik yang umum terjadi berupa single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) seperti pada gen kelompok aquaporin (AQPs) yang berperan penting untuk menjaga kelembapan dan elastisitas epidermis kulit. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis pengaruh mutasi pada salah satu kelompok protein AQPs yaitu aquaporin 3 (AQP3) secara in silico. Materi penelitian berupa data sequence dan struktur 3D AQP3 wild-type dan AQP3 mutant yang diunduh dari protein data bank (pdb id 1FX8 dan 1LDF). Kedua sequence ini disejajarkan dengan metode “ClustalW” untuk mengamati posisi mutasi, sedangkan struktur 3D keduanya juga disejajarkan menggunakan metode “Aligment” untuk mengamati perubahan daerah “site binding” native ligand. Dampak perubahan konformasi AQP3 mutant juga diamati terhadap beberapa senyawa sebagai ligand uji yang diketahui bekerja mendukung fungsi protein AQP3 seperti asiatic acid, madecassic acid, asiaticoside, dan alpha-retinoic acid melalui metode docking molekuler. Hasil pensejajaran sequence menunjukkan mutasi terjadi pada urutan residu ke-48 (tryptophan-phenil alanin) dan ke-200 (phenil alanin-threonine). Mutasi kedua residu menyebabkan terjadinya perubahan model interaksi semua ligand uji dibanding AQP3 tipe normal. Mutasi juga menyebabkan penurunan stabilitas AQP3. Namun, sebaliknya tidak menyebabkan fungsi AQP3 berubah tetapi hanya menurunkan kemampuan pengikatan molekul native ligand yang berimplikasi pada penurunan kemampuan pengikatan molekul air, gliserol dan ligan uji.

The presence of glycoconjugates in caput, corpus, and cauda epididymis of the Javan muntjacs was performed using lectin histochemical method. The epididymis organs were obtained from two adult male Javan muntjacs in hard antler stage and then immediately fixed in Bouin’s solution and processed in histological manner. Six types of biotinylated lectins namely Peanut agglutinin (PNA), Soybean agglutinin (SBA), Wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), Ricinus communis agglutinin (RCA), Concanavalin A (Con A), and Ulex europaeus agglutinin I (UEA I) were applied to detect the specific glycoconjugates in the epididymal tissue of muntjacs. The result showed the presence of glycoconjugates were detected by five types of lectins except UEA I in caput, corpus, and cauda epididymis with specific distribution and also the intensity of lectins binding. Glycoconjugates β-galactose, β-glucose, mannose, N-acetyl-galactosamine, N-acetyl-glucosamine, and sialic acid were stained with various intensity in epithelial cells, basal cells, stereocilia, spermatozoa, and stroma of caput, corpus, and cauda epididymis. The presence of sialic acid on the surface of spermatozoa detected by WGA are thought to be play a role on sperm protection during their maturation and transit along epididymal lumen. In conclusion, the difference of glycoconjugates distribution pattern and lectin binding in the epididymal caput, corpus, and cauda of the Javan muntjac indicates the regional differences in epididymal function in spermatozoa maturation.

This study aimed to analyze the muscle microstructure of longissimus dorsi Brahman cross (BX) cattle slaughtered at the slaughterhouse of North Aceh District. The meat samples for the study were taken from three male BX cattle aged 18-30 months with body weights ranging from 400 kg to 500 kg and the average body condition scores (BCS) of 3-4. The muscle used was the longissimus dorsi muscle. The mean (±SE) diameter and cross-sectional area (CSA) of muscle fibers and the percentage of fast fibers in the longissimus dorsi BX muscle were 71.69±1.23 µm, 4263.43±305.69 µm2 , and 48.17±8.81%, respectively. This study concluded that the longissimus dorsi muscle of the BX has relatively large muscle fibers, some of which in each fascicle are composed of fast muscle (fast fiber/type II).

Penerapan sistem integrasi ternak dan tanaman pangan dengan memanfaatkan lahan pekarangan rumah terutama di pedesaan masih sangat rendah, sehingga dibutuhkan peranan perguruan tinggi untuk mensosialisasikan penerapan teknologi tersebut dalam mewujudkan ketahanan pangan. Gampong (Desa) Pinem merupakan salah satu desa yang terletak di Kecamatan Samatiga, Kabupaten Aceh Barat, Provinsi Aceh. Masyarakat Gampong Pinem memiliki lahan pekarangan rumah yang luas yang belum dimanfaatkan secara optimal. Program IbM ini bertujuan untuk merangsang masyarakat melalui kelompok tani dan ternak untuk memanfaatkan lahan pekarangan rumah yang luas agar lebih produktif. Pemilihan budidaya ayam broiler yang dilaksanakan dalam program ini berdasarkan keinginan anggota kelompok ternak Gampong Pinem untuk menghidupkan kembali usaha ayam broiler yang pernah ditekuni dengan memanfaatkan lahan pekarangan rumah untuk menanam tanaman pangan. Pada kegiatan ini dilakukan demplot sistem manajemen pemeliharaan ayam broiler yang baik dan demplot penanaman tanaman pangan di lahan pekarangan rumah. Kotoran ayam broiler yang dipelihara dimanfaatkan sebagai pupuk organik bagi tanaman jagung, bayam dan kangkung. Kegiatan IbM mampu meningkatkan semangat mitra untuk melanjutkan usaha ayam broiler dan tanaman pangan dengan memanfaatkan lahan pekarangan rumah yang luas. Diharapkan kegiatan ini dapat menunjang perekonomian keluarga.

The Aceh cattle are local Indonesian beef cattle that are farmed in Aceh Province. This type of cattle is one of the sources of meat for the Aceh people. This study aims to analyze the quality of two primal cuts (longissimus lumborum and semitendinosus muscle) from Aceh cattle based on the muscle microstructure characteristics and MSTN gene expression. This study used a sample of longissimus lumborum and semitendinosus muscles from 18 adult male Aceh cattle with the age of 2–2.5 years and a BCS of 3.24. Muscle samples were obtained shortly after the cattle were slaughtered in slaughterhouses in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar districts. Muscle microstructure analysis was performed using the HE, Masson’s trichrome, and immunohistochemistry staining methods, while the MSTN gene expression analysis was performed using the qPCR method. The analysis of the physical quality of meat includes pH, meat color, fat color, cooking loss, water holding capacity, and WBSF value. The results showed that the area of LL muscle fibers was smaller than that of ST with relatively the same diameter. Both muscles were dominated by fast fibers with a percentage of 82.37% (LL muscle) and 91.80% (ST muscle). The area and composition of the type of muscle fibers are the main factors that influence the tenderness of Aceh beef. A higher distribution of collagen was found in ST muscles than in LL muscles. MSTN gene expression in both muscle types was relatively the same. Aceh cattle have large muscle fibers and are dominated by fast fibers with a high percentage, resulting in a low level of the tenderness of Aceh beef. However, the level of tenderness of Aceh beef is still in accordance with the cooking preparation of original and favorite cuisine of Aceh people.

This study aims to evaluate the economic potential of Aceh cattle from the perspective of stock farmers, traders, and consumers as the three main players in the business. This study was conducted from June to August 2018 in Banda Aceh City and Aceh Besar District, Aceh Province, Indonesia. It used related literature and a survey method that involved interviews, observations, and questionnaires from 9 stock farmers, 23 traders, and 22 consumers to obtain data. The data presented descriptively and analyzed using SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis. The results show that the strength factors of the Aceh beef business are high selling prices, easy maintenance, the good taste of meat, and that do not shrink quickly when cooked. Meanwhile, the weakness factors are the limitation of the availability of seeds, traditional methods of assessing carcass weight during the buying and selling process, and the low productivity of the cattle compared with other breeds. The factors that become opportunities include the high demand for the beef, on both weekdays and religious holidays, the selling price tends to increase each year, and the government's commitment to increase local cattle productivity through various programs. However, there are certain threats to the development of these cattle, and they include the high price of calves, competition with other more productive breeds, the existence of other cheaper sources of animal protein, and a decrease in consumer purchasing power. The difference between the value of the strength and weakness factors was 0.12, which signified a positive result, while that between the opportunity and threat factors was −0.29, which signified a negative result. Furthermore, the coordinate value from the Cartesian field shows that the development of these cattle is in quadrant IV, which means that the prospect for development is still quite high, regardless of the threat. In conclusion, Aceh cattle have a high economic potential to be developed, which needs to be strengthened through the rebranding program while at the same time maintaining the sustainability of the Aceh cattle breed in Indonesia. Meanwhile, the government is expected to supervise and regulate the trade of these cattle to provide beef at an affordable price for consumers.

Aceh cattle serves as the first choice in providing beef in Aceh Province, Indonesia. This study was aimed to measure the area of muscle fibers in Aceh cattle and its correlation with the meat tenderness. The study used semitendinosus muscle samples from four Aceh bulls aged 18-30 months with an average body weight of 320.75±71.41 kg. The paraffin sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, while muscle samples were processed for meat tenderness measurement. The measurement of the area of muscle fibers was carried out under a light microscope and by using IMAGE J software, while the analysis of meat tenderness was done using the Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF). The results were compared with reference values in Bali cattle and Ongole grade cattle. The average area (μm2) of muscle fibers in Aceh cattle was 2 752.17 (95% CI: 1 334.34-4 170.00). This value is not different from those of Bali cattle and Ongole grade cattle. WBSF value (kg cm−2) in Aceh cattle was 9.35 (95% CI: 4.21-14.49). The average of WBSF value in Aceh cattle was higher but not significantly different from those of Bali cattle and Ongole grade cattle. The study concluded that beef of Aceh cattle is as tender as the beef of Bali and Ongole grade cattle.
