Background: Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most severe diseases in women. Therefore, a premature diagnosis is necessary for timely detection and treatment execution. Clinical-level diagnosis of BC is normally performed with imaging techniques, and Ultrasound-Imaging (UI) is one of the noninvasive imaging techniques frequently executed to diagnose BC. Aims: This research aims to develop an efficient deep-learning framework to detect BC from UI with better accuracy. Methods: The executed method consists of the following stages: (i) Data collection and preprocessing, (ii) Deep-features mining with pre-trained VGG16, (iii) Image enhancement using Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Local Binary Pattern (LBP), (iv) Firefly-algorithm (FA) supported feature reduction, and (v) Feature integration and classification. Results: The proposed work is tested and executed using 1680 test images (840 benign and 840 malignant) of dimension pixels and implements a binary classifier with 5-fold cross-validation to separate the UI database into the healthy/cancer class. Conclusion: This work implemented FA-supported feature reduction. Moreover, it was found that this scheme helps to achieve a classification accuracy of 98.21% with the KNN classifier.

Texture and shape in fashion, constituting essential elements of garments, characterize the body and surface of the fabric and outline the silhouette of clothing, respectively. The selection of texture and shape plays a critical role in the design process, as they largely determine the success of a new design for fashion items. In this research, we propose a texture and shape disentangled generative adversarial network (TSD-GAN) to perform “intelligent” design with the transformation of texture and shape in fashion items. Our TSD-GAN aims to learn how to disentangle the features of texture and shape of different fashion items in an unsupervised manner. Specifically, a fashion attribute encoder is developed to decompose the input fashion items into independent representations of texture and shape. Then, to learn the coarse or fine styles hidden in the features of texture and shape, a texture mapping network and a shape mapping network are proposed to disentangle the features into different hierarchical representations. The different hierarchical representations of texture and shape are then fed into a multi-factor-based generator to generate mixed-style fashion items. In addition, a multi-discriminator framework is developed to distinguish the authenticity and texture similarity between the generated images and the real images. Experimental results on different fashion categories demonstrate that our proposed TSD-GAN may be useful for assisting designers to accomplish the design process by transforming the texture and shape of fashion items.

Blocking increased expression of nerve injury-specific long non-coding RNA (NIS-lncRNA) in injured dorsal root ganglia (DRG) through DRG microinjection of NIS-lncRNA small hairpin interfering RNA or generation of NIS-lncRNA knockdown mice mitigates neuropathic pain. However, these strategies are impractical in the clinic. This study employed a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved antisense oligonucleotides strategy to examine the effect of NIS-lncRNA ASOs on neuropathic pain.Effects of intrathecal injection of NIS-lncRNA antisense oligonucleotides on day 7 or 14 after chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve, fourth lumbar (L4) spinal nerve ligation, or intraperitoneal injection of paclitaxel or streptozotocin on the expression of DRG NIS-lncRNA and C-C chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2, an NIS-lncRNA downstream target) and nociceptive hypersensitivity were examined. We also assessed whether NIS-lncRNA antisense oligonucleotides produced cellular toxicity.Intrathecal NIS-lncRNA antisense oligonucleotides attenuated CCI-induced mechanical allodynia, heat hyperalgesia, cold hyperalgesia, and ongoing nociceptive responses, without changing basal or acute nociceptive responses and locomotor function. Intrathecal NIS-lncRNA antisense oligonucleotides also blocked CCI-induced increases in NIS-lncRNA and CCL2 in the ipsilateral L3 and L4 DRG and hyperactivities of neurones and astrocytes in the ipsilateral L3 and L4 spinal cord dorsal horn. Similar results were found in antisense oligonucleotides-treated mice after spinal nerve ligation or intraperitoneal injection of paclitaxel or streptozotocin. Normal morphologic structure and no cell loss were observed in the DRG and spinal cord of antisense oligonucleotides-treated mice.These findings further validate the role of NIS-lncRNA in trauma-, chemotherapy-, or diabetes-induced neuropathic pain and demonstrate potential clinical application of NIS-lncRNA antisense oligonucleotides for neuropathic pain management.

Coupling Co1-xS nanoparticles of rich cobalt vacancies (VCo) between layered carbon framework, the Co1-xS@N/S-C was designed to demonstrate an effective defect and structure synergistic engineering for boosted oxide electrolysis activities for zinc air batteries.

A novel core/shell structure composed of N-doped rutile TiO2@g-C3N4 (NT@CNx) with an S-scheme heterojunction is successfully synthesized. The S-scheme heterojunction optimizes the electrochemical property and redox ability of the NT@CNx composite.

Multifunctional core-shell hybrids formed by integration of metal-organic framework (MOF) and functional materials have attracted extensive attention as promising theranostic nanoplatforms due to their combined novel properties and enhanced therapeutic efficacy. Recently, the second near-infrared (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) laser-induced photothermal therapy (PTT) as compared to the NIR-I(700-950 nm) laser-induced PTT has displayed improved therapeutic effects owing to its merits that include deeper tissue penetration and increased maximum permissible exposure. Herein, a novel core-shell hollow copper sulfide@metal-organic framework (HCuS@MIL-100) has been successfully fabricated by a layer-by-layer technique for the first time and their collective theranostic effects are investigated in vitro and in vivo. In this platform, the inner HCuS was applied as the NIR-II photothermal agent with excellent NIR-II absorption feature, leading to impressive photothermal effects under irradiation by 1064 nm light. With MIL-100 as the shell, HCuS@MIL-100 not only displayed optimal biocompatibility but also presented superior T2 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) ability. In the current study multifunctional hollow core-shell HCuS@MIL-100 are fabricated for the MRI-guided PTT. This study also offers a facile and effective strategy for the development of novel theranostic platforms with high efficiency through the integration of MOFs and functional materials.

We aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness and health benefits of 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23), 13-valent pneumococcal conjunctive vaccine (PCV13), and PCV13-PPSV23 sequential vaccination strategies in preventing pneumonia and other pneumococcal diseases among the senior citizens (≥ 65 years) in China. The cost-effectiveness of pneumococcal vaccines compared to no vaccination was estimated using a decision-tree Markov model from a societal perspective. Parameters including epidemiological data, vaccine efficacy and cost data were obtained from previous studies. Cases and deaths averted, quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) gained, and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) were presented as outcomes. Sensitivity analyses were performed to explore the uncertainty in the model. In the base-case analysis, compared with no pneumococcal vaccination, the ICERs of PPSV23, PCV13 and PCV13-PPSV23 are US$10,776.7/QALY, $9,193.2/QALY, and $15,080.0/QALY, respectively. PCV13 is the most cost-effective strategy and the only cost-effective strategy based on a threshold of the one-time national GDP per capita, whereas PPSV23 vaccine strategy is provided with the lowest cost, and PCV13-PPSV23 demonstrates the greatest impact on pneumococcal disease burden. Sensitivity analyses reveal that the results are greatly influenced by serotype coverage, vaccine efficacy, CAP incidence and vaccine prices. The PCV13 vaccination for Chinese seniors is more cost-effective than PPSV23 vaccination and PCV13-PPSV23 sequential vaccination.

Hepatocyte growth factor receptor (HGFR or Met) upregulation has been proven to play important roles in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). Interestingly, chemoresistance against epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors including erlotinib and gefitinib was also related to Met. Targeting bromodomain and extra terminal domain (BET) proteins, especially BRD4, has shown inhibitory effects on lung cancer, but the mechanism is unclear. Herein, we found that JQ1 (BET inhibitor) suppressed NSCLC cell growth, reduced the Met expression, and contributed to inactivation of PI3K/Akt and MAPK/ERK pathways. Moreover, another BET protein inhibitor I-BET151, or BRD4 depletion, also inhibited NSCLC cell growth and downregulated Met. JQ1 inhibited HGF-induced cell growth and Met/PI3K/Akt activation, also inhibited A549 tumor growth in xenograft mouse models, in parallel with Met downregulation. Moreover, JQ1 inhibited the growth of paired erlotinib-sensitive and resistant HCC827 cells in parallel with Met downregulation and PI3K/Akt signaling inactivation. JQ1 also exerted inhibitory influences on the growth of erlotinib-sensitive and resistant HCC827 tumors in xenograft mouse models. These results suggested that targeting BET proteins inhibited NSCLC via downregulating Met and inactivating PI3K/AKT pathway. Our findings reveal a novel mechanism of BET proteins implicated in NSCLC progression with Met taken into consideration.
