2. Automatic Path Planning for Spraying Drones Based on Deep Q-Learning

Abstract

The reduction of the agricultural workforce due to the rapid development of technology has resulted in labor shortages. Agricultural mechanization, such as drone use for pesticide spraying, can solve this problem. However, the terrain, culture, and operational limitations in mountainous orchards in Taiwan make pesticide spraying challenging. By combining reinforcement learning with deep neural networks, we propose to train drones to avoid obstacles and find optimal paths for pesticide spraying that reduce operational difficulties, pesticide costs, and battery consumption. We experimented with different reward mechanisms, neural network depths, flight direction granularities, and environments to devise a plan suitable for sloping orchards. Reinforcement learning is more effective than traditional algorithms for solving path planning in complex environments. &nbsp

Abstract

Background/Aim: Infection is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in patients treated for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). However, there is limited information on the impact and risk factors for infection among patients receiving rituximab, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, doxorubicin, and prednisolone (R-CHOP). Patients and Methods: A retrospective study evaluating patients with DLBCL receiving R-CHOP and R-COP between 2004 and 2021 was conducted at a medical center. Hospital patients’ records for the five-item modified frailty index (mFI-5), sarcopenia, blood-based inflammatory markers, and clinical outcomes were statistically analyzed. Results: Patients with frailty, sarcopenia, and high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were associated with a higher risk of infections. The revised International Prognostic Index poor-risk group, high NLR, infections, and treatment modality were risk factors for shorter progression-free and overall survival. Conclusion: Pre-treatment high NLR was a predictor of infection and survival outcome in DLBCL patients.

Radiotherapy-resistant cell single-guide RNA (sgRNA) was first amplified by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) in the coding region and then subject to next-generation sequencing (NGS) and bioinformatics analysis to screen radiotherapy-resistant genes. Certain radiotherapy-resistant genes were then selected to construct activated cell lines transfected with a single gene so as to further verify the relationship between gene expression and radiotherapy resistance.Results: A total of 16 radiotherapy-resistant genes, namely, C20orf203, MTFR1, TAF1L, MYADM, NIPSNAP1, ZUP1, RASL11A, PSMB2, PSMA6, OR8H3, TMSB4Y, CD300LF, EEF1A1, ATP6AP1L, TRAF3IP2, and SNRNP35, were screened based on the NGS results and bioinformatics analysis of the radiotherapy-resistant cells. Activated cell lines transfected with a single gene were constructed using 10 radiotherapy-resistant genes. The qPCR findings showed that, when compared with the control group, the experimental group had significantly up-regulated mRNA expression of MTFR1, NIPSNAP1, ZUP1, PSMB2, PSMA6, EEF1A1, TMSB4Y and TAF1L (p < 0.05). No significant difference in the mRNA expression of AKT3 or TRAF3IP2 (p > 0.05) was found between the two groups (p > 0.05).Conclusion: The 16 genes screened are potential lymphoma radiotherapy-resistant genes. It was initially determined that the high expression of 8 genes was associated with lymphoma radiotherapy resistance, and these genes could serve as the potential biomarkers for predicting lymphoma radiotherapy resistance or as new targets for therapy.Keywords: lymphoma, radiotherapy resistance, gene, CRISPR/Cas9

5. Diosgenin, a Natural Steroidal Sapogenin, Alleviates the Progression of Diabetic Retinopathy in Diabetic Mice

Abstract

Background/Aim: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the most common microvascular complication of diabetes and a major cause of blindness in working-age adults. Diosgenin (DG), a natural steroidal sapogenin extracted from fenugreek seeds and wild yam roots, has hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. Given its pharmacological effects, we speculated that DG may be a promising treatment for DR. Therefore, this study was aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of DG in preventing or slowing DR progression in a mouse model (+Lepr(db)/+Lepr(db) strain) of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Materials and Methods: DG (5.0 mg/kg body weight) or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) was administered to 8-week-old T2D mice via oral gavage daily for 24 weeks. Paraffin-embedded eye tissues from the mice were collected and stained with hematoxylin and eosin to evaluate retinal histopathology. Apoptosis-related proteins BCL2-associated X (Bax), B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), and cleaved caspase-3 were evaluated by western blotting of mouse retinas. Results: Body weight was slightly reduced in the DG-treated group; however, glucose levels were not markedly different between the DG- and PBS-treated groups. Total retinal thickness, thickness of the photoreceptor and outer nuclear layers, and loss of ganglion cells significantly improved in the retina of the DG-treated T2D mice compared with those in the PBS-treated T2D mice. Cleaved caspase-3 level significantly decreased in the retina of the DG-treated T2D mice. Conclusion: DG alleviates DR pathology and exerts a protective effect on the T2D mouse retina. The inhibitory effects of DG on DR may involve mechanisms of the anti-apoptotic pathway.

6. Clinical Outcomes of Metastatic Breast Cancer in Patients Having Imaging Liver Pseudocirrhosis with or without Evident Varices

Abstract

Background Pseudocirrhosis is an imaging finding of malignancies with liver metastasis with or without clinical liver cirrhosis-related portal hypertension (pHTN). This study defined evident pHTN by the presence of esophageal or gastric varices and compared patients’ outcomes of metastatic breast cancer with imaging-diagnosed pseudocirrhosis with or without varices. Methods The medical records from patients with metastatic breast cancer and pseudocirrhosis between 2005 and 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. Survival outcomes were compared based on endoscopic evidence of esophageal or gastric varices. Results Among 106 patients with pseudocirrhosis, 33 (31%) had de novo stage IV disease, and 66 (62%) had hormone receptor (HR)-positive and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative breast cancer. Eighty-one (76%) had initial metastases in both hepatic lobes, and 32 (30%) had esophageal or gastric varices. The median overall survival (OS) was 5 and 13 months in patients with and without varices (P = .002). The median OS in patients with HER2-positive, HR-positive/HER2-negative, and triple-negative subtype was 16, 9, and 2 months, respectively (P = .001). Patients with varices usually had cirrhotic complications, including gastrointestinal bleeding, hyperbilirubinemia, hyperammonemia, and coagulopathy. Despite their challenging clinical conditions, 7 patients with varices had OS exceeding 1 year. In multivariate analysis, evident varices (P = .007) and triple-negative subtype (P = .013) were associated with poor OS. Conclusions Patients with pseudocirrhosis and evident varices had a significantly shorter median OS, and were usually associated with clinical cirrhosis-related complications. To maximize OS, early identification and meticulous supportive care are warranted.

Abstract

This paper explores the impact of virtual guidance on mid-level representation-based navigation, where an agent performs navigation tasks based solely on visual observations. Instead of providing distance measures or numerical directions to guide the agent, which may be difficult for it to interpret visually, the paper investigates the potential of different forms of virtual guidance schemes on navigation performance. Three schemes of virtual guidance signals are explored: virtual navigation path, virtual waypoints, and a combination of both. The experiments were conducted using a virtual city built with the Unity engine to train the agents while avoiding obstacles. The results show that virtual guidance provides the agent with more meaningful navigation information and achieves better performance in terms of path completion rates and navigation efficiency. 8. A novel therapeutic approach for endometriosis using adipose-derived stem cell-derived conditioned medium- A new hope for endometriotic patients in improving fertility

Abstract

IntroductionEndometriosis is defined as the growth of endometrial glands and stromal cells in a heterotopic location with immune dysregulation. It usually leads to chronic pelvic pain and subfertility. Although various treatments are available, the recurrence rate remains high. Adipose tissue is an abundant source of multipotent mesenchymal adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs). ADSCs display effects on not only tissue regeneration, but also immune regulation. Thus, the current study aims to test the effects of ADSCs on the growth of endometriosis.MethodsADSCs isolated from lipoaspiration-generated adipose tissue and their conditioned medium (ADSC-CM) were subjected to quality validation, including karyotyping as well as growth promotion and sterility tests for microbial contamination under Good Tissue Practice and Good Manufacturing Practice regulations. An autologous endometriosis mouse model was established by suturing endometrial tissue to peritoneal wall followed by treating with DMEM/F12 medium, ADSC-CM, ADSCs or ADSC-CM+ADSCs for 28 days. The area of endometriotic cysts and the degree of pelvic adhesion were measured. ICAM-1, VEGF and caspase 3 expression was assessed by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry. Moreover, the mice were allowed to mate and deliver. The pregnancy outcomes were recorded. The ADSC-CM was subjected to proteomics analysis with further data mining with Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA).ResultsBoth ADSC-CM and ADSCs passed quality validation. ADSC-CM reduced the area of endometriotic cysts. The inhibition by ADSC-CM was obliterated by adding ADSCs. The presence of ADSCs with or without ADSC-CM increased the peritoneal adhesion. ADSC-CM inhibited ICAM-1 and VEGF mRNA and protein expression, whereas the addition of ADSCs not only did not inhibit by itself, but also blocked the inhibition by ADSC-CM. The resorption rate was reduced by ADSC-CM. The number of live birth/dam and the survival rate of pup at 1 week-old were both increased by ADSC-CM in mice with endometriosis. IPA demonstrated that PTX3 was potentially critical for the inhibition of endometriosis by ADSC-CM due to its anti-inflammatory and antiangiogenic properties as well as its importance in implantation.ConclusionADSC-CM inhibited endometriosis development and improved pregnancy outcomes in mice. Potential translation to clinical treatment for human endometriosis is expected.

Abstract

Given a gene-tree labeled topology $G$ and a species tree $S$, the "ancestral configurations" at an internal node $k$ of $S$ represent the combinatorially different sets of gene lineages that can be present at $k$ when all possible realizations of $G$ in $S$ are considered. Ancestral configurations have been introduced as a data structure for evaluating the conditional probability of a gene-tree labeled topology given a species tree, and their enumeration assists in describing the complexity of this computation. In the case that the gene-tree labeled topology $G=t$ matches that of the species tree $S$, by techniques of analytic combinatorics, we study distributional properties of the "total" number of ancestral configurations measured across the different nodes of a random labeled topology $t$ selected under the uniform and the Yule probability models. Under both of these probabilistic scenarios, we show that the total number $T_n$ of ancestral configurations of a random labeled topology of $n$ taxa asymptotically follows a lognormal distribution. Over uniformly distributed labeled topologies, the asymptotic growth of the mean and the variance of $T_n$ are found to satisfy $\mathbb{E}_{\rm U}[T_n] \sim 2.449 \cdot 1.333^n$ and $\mathbb{V}_{\rm U}[T_n] \sim 5.050 \cdot 1.822^n$, respectively. Under the Yule model, which assigns higher probabilities to more balanced labeled topologies, we obtain the mean $\mathbb{E}_{\rm Y}[T_n] \sim 1.425^n$ and the variance $\mathbb{V}_{\rm Y}[T_n] \sim 2.045^n$.

Abstract

Differentially private synthetic data is a promising alternative for sensitive data release. Many differentially private generative models have been proposed in the literature. Unfortunately, they all suffer from the low utility of the synthetic data, particularly for images of high resolutions. Here, we propose DPAF, an effective differentially private generative model for high-dimensional image synthesis. Different from the prior private stochastic gradient descent-based methods that add Gaussian noises in the backward phase during the model training, DPAF adds a differentially private feature aggregation in the forward phase, bringing advantages, including the reduction of information loss in gradient clipping and low sensitivity for the aggregation. Moreover, as an improper batch size has an adverse impact on the utility of synthetic data, DPAF also tackles the problem of setting a proper batch size by proposing a novel training strategy that asymmetrically trains different parts of the discriminator. We extensively evaluate different methods on multiple image datasets (up to images of 128x128 resolution) to demonstrate the performance of DPAF.

Abstract

Estimating 3D humans from images often produces implausible bodies that lean, float, or penetrate the floor. Such methods ignore the fact that bodies are typically supported by the scene. A physics engine can be used to enforce physical plausibility, but these are not differentiable, rely on unrealistic proxy bodies, and are difficult to integrate into existing optimization and learning frameworks. In contrast, we exploit novel intuitive-physics (IP) terms that can be inferred from a 3D SMPL body interacting with the scene. Inspired by biomechanics, we infer the pressure heatmap on the body, the Center of Pressure (CoP) from the heatmap, and the SMPL body's Center of Mass (CoM). With these, we develop IPMAN, to estimate a 3D body from a color image in a "stable" configuration by encouraging plausible floor contact and overlapping CoP and CoM. Our IP terms are intuitive, easy to implement, fast to compute, differentiable, and can be integrated into existing optimization and regression methods. We evaluate IPMAN on standard datasets and MoYo, a new dataset with synchronized multi-view images, ground-truth 3D bodies with complex poses, body-floor contact, CoM and pressure. IPMAN produces more plausible results than the state of the art, improving accuracy for static poses, while not hurting dynamic ones. Abstract

The measurements of the inclusive J/$\psi$ yield at midrapidity ($|y| < 0.9$ and forward rapidity ($2.5 < y < 4$) in Pb$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC are reported. The inclusive J/$\psi$ production yields and nuclear modification factors, $R_{\rm AA}$, are measured as a function of the collision centrality, J/$\psi$ transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$), and rapidity. The J/$\psi$ average transverse momentum and squared transverse momentum ($\langle p_{\rm T} \rangle$ and $\langle p_{\rm T}^{2} \rangle$) are evaluated as a function of the centrality at midrapidity. Compared to the previous ALICE publications, here the entire Pb$-$Pb collisions dataset collected during the LHC Run 2 is used, which improves the precision of the measurements and extends the $p_{\rm T}$ coverage. The $p_{\rm T}$-integrated $R_{\rm AA}$ shows a hint of an increasing trend towards unity from semicentral to central collisions at midrapidity, while it is flat at forward rapidity. The $p_{\rm T}$-differential $R_{\rm AA}$ shows a strong suppression at high $p_{\rm T}$ with less suppression at low $p_{\rm T}$ where it reaches a larger value at midrapidity compared to forward rapidity. The ratio of the $p_{\rm T}$-integrated yields of J/$\psi$ to those of D$^{0}$ mesons is reported for the first time for the central and semicentral event classes at midrapidity. Model calculations implementing charmonium production via the coalescence of charm quarks and antiquarks during the fireball evolution (transport models) or in a statistical approach with thermal weights are in good agreement with the data at low $p_{\rm T}$. At higher $p_{\rm T}$, the data are well described by transport models and a model based on energy loss in the strongly-interacting medium produced in nuclear collisions at the LHC. Abstract

Cinemagraphs are short looping videos created by adding subtle motions to a static image. This kind of media is popular and engaging. However, automatic generation of cinemagraphs is an underexplored area and current solutions require tedious low-level manual authoring by artists. In this paper, we present an automatic method that allows generating human cinemagraphs from single RGB images. We investigate the problem in the context of dressed humans under the wind. At the core of our method is a novel cyclic neural network that produces looping cinemagraphs for the target loop duration. To circumvent the problem of collecting real data, we demonstrate that it is possible, by working in the image normal space, to learn garment motion dynamics on synthetic data and generalize to real data. We evaluate our method on both synthetic and real data and demonstrate that it is possible to create compelling and plausible cinemagraphs from single RGB images.

16. Federated Virtual Learning on Heterogeneous Data with Local-global Distillation

Abstract

Despite Federated Learning (FL)'s trend for learning machine learning models in a distributed manner, it is susceptible to performance drops when training on heterogeneous data. In addition, FL inevitability faces the challenges of synchronization, efficiency, and privacy. Recently, dataset distillation has been explored in order to improve the efficiency and scalability of FL by creating a smaller, synthetic dataset that retains the performance of a model trained on the local private datasets. We discover that using distilled local datasets can amplify the heterogeneity issue in FL. To address this, we propose a new method, called Federated Virtual Learning on Heterogeneous Data with Local-Global Distillation (FedLGD), which trains FL using a smaller synthetic dataset (referred as virtual data) created through a combination of local and global dataset distillation. Specifically, to handle synchronization and class imbalance, we propose iterative distribution matching to allow clients to have the same amount of balanced local virtual data; to harmonize the domain shifts, we use federated gradient matching to distill global virtual data that are shared with clients without hindering data privacy to rectify heterogeneous local training via enforcing local-global feature similarity. We experiment on both benchmark and real-world datasets that contain heterogeneous data from different sources, and further scale up to an FL scenario that contains large number of clients with heterogeneous and class imbalance data. Our method outperforms state-of-the-art heterogeneous FL algorithms under various settings with a very limited amount of distilled virtual data.

17. 專科生死亡體驗活動之遺囑撰寫作為生命意義實踐：存在現象學分析

研究探討（1）死亡逼近下的感受、（2）遺囑之生命意義實踐及（3）因死而生意義實踐之經驗結構。以存在現象學方法分析26份專四生參與死亡體驗活動所產生的遺囑與心得。遺囑內容呈現出兩結果、兩世界、兩面向之生命意義實踐：（1）完成意義實踐：完成此世存有，安頓此世自己（完成自我夢想與自我修練）、安頓此世人倫（完成或延續對父母之感謝、感恩和報恩，對朋友、戀人與手足之相互關懷；及時解開心結、完成感恩與彌補愧疚）、投入死後世界（安頓自己後事與修行；跨越生死兩界延續人倫）。（2）未完成意義實踐：此世遺憾（未能安頓自己－人生沒目標；）（未能安頓人倫－沒完整的家）、投入死後世界（寄望來生能安頓自己）。心得呈現出避開死與接受死兩趨向，前者僅部分出現因死而轉的意義實踐，後者全部出現。整體活動使人深刻體驗存有之可畏，繼而出現自我在苦中之移動，啟動生命意義轉化，展開向生向死之雙重意義實踐，承擔起自我命運與他人之苦的責任。本研究據此提出「因死與苦而生成之意義實踐：為我與為他之雙重開展」模式，並建議後續研究進一步具體化與精緻化。 The purpose of this study is to explore (a) feelings when facing death, (b) meanings practice for life, and (c) the experiential structure of the meaning practice induced by death. This study adopts the existential phenomenological approach to analyze wills and reflection-after-participation transcripts written by twenty-six college students who participated in an experiential activity of facing-death. The content of will transcripts indicates the practice of three dimensions with dual characteristics when the participants faced death: outcome (meaning transformation or not), worlds (being-in-this-life-world and the post-death world), and subjects (self and others). (1) Participants who presented the fulfillment of meaning conversion tried to establish harmony in relations not only with the two subjects but also in the two worlds. For themselves in being-in-this-life-world, participants arranged to care for themselves by fulfilling dreams and practicing self-improvement. Meanwhile, for others, practices adopted to care for persons who have had in this life world are as follows: being grateful for parents and paying a debt of gratitude; giving and enjoying mutual caring between siblings, friends, and lovers; and expressing apologies or regrets to those who have experienced harm and then tried to restore relationships. As for the post-death world, practices taken to deal with both the two subjects and the two worlds include making plans of their own funeral, afterlife spiritual practice, and arrangement of care for others across the worlds of life and death. (2) Individuals who failed to present thoughts related to meaning transformation showed regrets both for their lives and for relationships with others in being-in-this-life-world. Nevertheless, they still remained a glimmer of hope in the afterlife, such as finding their own goals of life in the afterlife. The results of reflection transcripts revealed two approaches to death: acceptance and avoidance. All individuals accepting death presented meaning transformation; however, only part of death-avoidance individuals described the transformation. In sum, the facing-death activity facilitates individuals to start a journal of the transformation of meaning for life: Participants profoundly experienced the awe of existence and the emerged suffering. Their selves are immersed in and moving among multiple modes of suffering. Individuals then start to unfold the meanings and started practices of life toward both the two subjects and the two worlds. Individuals assume responsibilities for their own life and others’ suffering in harmony with their expectations. This study proposed a theoretical model based on research findings—the model of the meaning practice induced by facing death and suffering: A dual unfolding for oneself and others. It is recommended that the applications of this study and follow-up research are needed to enrich and refine the model. &nbsp

20. Searching for unconventional superfluid in exciton condensate of monolayer semiconductors

Abstract

It is well known that two-dimensional (2D) bosons in homogeneous space cannot undergo real Bose-Einstein condensation, and the superfluid to normal phase transition is Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type, associated with vortex-antivortex pair unbinding. Here we point out a 2D bosonic system whose low energy physics goes beyond conventional paradigm of 2D homogeneous bosons, i.e., intralayer excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides. With intrinsic valley-orbit coupling and external magnetic field, exciton dispersion becomes linear at small momentum, giving rise to a series of novel features. The critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation of these excitons is nonzero, suggesting true long-range order in 2D homogeneous system. The dispersion of Goldstone mode at long wavelength has the form $\varepsilon(\boldsymbol{q})\sim\sqrt{q}$, in contrast to conventional linear phonon spectrum. The vortex energy deviates from the usual logarithmic form with respect to system size, but instead has an additional linear term. Superfluid to normal phase transition is no longer BKT type for system size beyond a characteristic scale, without discontinuous jump in superfluid density. With the recent experimental progress towards realization of exciton condensate in monolayer semiconductors, our work provides an experimentally feasible system to search for unconventional 2D superfluids beyond BKT paradigm., 9 pages, 6 figures

21. Transcriptomic alterations underlying metaplasia into specific metaplastic components in metaplastic breast carcinoma

Abstract

Background Metaplastic breast carcinoma (MpBC) typically consists of carcinoma of no special type (NST) with various metaplastic components. Although previous transcriptomic and proteomic studies have reported subtype-related heterogeneity, the intracase transcriptomic alterations between metaplastic components and paired NST components, which are critical for understanding the pathogenesis underlying the metaplastic processes, remain unclear. Methods Fifty-nine NST components and paired metaplastic components (spindle carcinomatous [SPS], matrix-producing, rhabdoid [RHA], and squamous carcinomatous [SQC] components) were microdissected from specimens obtained from 27 patients with MpBC for gene expression profiling using the NanoString Breast Cancer 360 Panel on a NanoString nCounter FLEX platform. BC360-defined signatures were scored using nSolver software. Results Hierarchical clustering and principal component analysis revealed a heterogeneous gene expression profile (GEP) corresponding to the NST components, but the GEP of metaplastic components exhibited subtype dependence. Compared with the paired NST components, the SPS components demonstrated the upregulation of genes related to stem cells and epithelial–mesenchymal transition and displayed enrichment in claudin-low and macrophage signatures. Despite certain overlaps in the enriched functions and signatures between the RHA and SPS components, the specific differentially expressed genes differed. We observed the RHA-specific upregulation of genes associated with vascular endothelial growth factor signaling. The chondroid matrix-producing components demonstrated the upregulation of hypoxia-related genes and the downregulation of the immune-related MHC2 signature and the TIGIT gene. In the SQC components, TGF-β and genes associated with cell adhesion were upregulated. The differentially expressed genes among metaplastic components in the 22 MpBC cases with one or predominantly one metaplastic component clustered paired NST samples into clusters with correlation with their associated metaplastic types. These genes could be used to separate the 31 metaplastic components according to respective metaplastic types with an accuracy of 74.2%, suggesting that intrinsic signatures of NST may determine paired metaplastic type. Finally, the EMT activity and stem cell traits in the NST components were correlated with specimens displaying lymph node metastasis. 23. The Removal, Excision, Sterilization, and Quarantine (RESQ) Method is a Feasible Alternative Treatment for Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device Infections

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines recommend that all infected cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) should be removed. However, financial or anatomical concerns can lead to management of infection with simple debridement, as opposed to complete removal. In this observational study, we report the outcomes of our modified procedure for this real-world dilemma. METHODS AND RESULTS: The Quarantine (RESQ) method is characterized as follows: the removal (R) of all non-essential foreign materials, including old sutures and leads; the excision (E) of all non-viable, chronically inflamed, granulation, or scar tissue; the sterilization (S) of the remaining generator; and the quarantine (Q) of a new pocket in the sub-muscular layer for reimplantation. From a review of electronic medical records, 30 patients were selected and divided into three groups according to the intervention used: RESQ (n = 9) in group A, simple debridement (n = 16) in group B, and guideline-recommended replacement (n = 5) in group C. Patient baseline characteristics were similar between the groups. After analyzing the proportion of patients that were free from infection one year following their respective interventions, we found that group A performed better than group B (100% and 31.2% infection-free, respectively, p = 0.001), and was comparable to group C (both 100% infection-free, p = not applicable). CONCLUSIONS: The RESQ method is a feasible and beneficial alternative for selected patients with CIED infections who are unable to receive a generator replacement according to the recommended guideline.

Abstract

Image diffusion models, trained on massive image collections, have emerged as the most versatile image generator model in terms of quality and diversity. They support inverting real images and conditional (e.g., text) generation, making them attractive for high-quality image editing applications. We investigate how to use such pre-trained image models for text-guided video editing. The critical challenge is to achieve the target edits while still preserving the content of the source video. Our method works in two simple steps: first, we use a pre-trained structure-guided (e.g., depth) image diffusion model to perform text-guided edits on an anchor frame; then, in the key step, we progressively propagate the changes to the future frames via self-attention feature injection to adapt the core denoising step of the diffusion model. We then consolidate the changes by adjusting the latent code for the frame before continuing the process. Our approach is training-free and generalizes to a wide range of edits. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach by extensive experimentation and compare it against four different prior and parallel efforts (on ArXiv). We demonstrate that realistic text-guided video edits are possible, without any compute-intensive preprocessing or video-specific finetuning.

Abstract

Sign language (SL) is the primary method of communication for the 70 million Deaf people around the world. Video dictionaries of isolated signs are a core SL learning tool. Replacing these with 3D avatars can aid learning and enable AR/VR applications, improving access to technology and online media. However, little work has attempted to estimate expressive 3D avatars from SL video; occlusion, noise, and motion blur make this task difficult. We address this by introducing novel linguistic priors that are universally applicable to SL and provide constraints on 3D hand pose that help resolve ambiguities within isolated signs. Our method, SGNify, captures fine-grained hand pose, facial expression, and body movement fully automatically from in-the-wild monocular SL videos. We evaluate SGNify quantitatively by using a commercial motion-capture system to compute 3D avatars synchronized with monocular video. SGNify outperforms state-of-the-art 3D body-pose- and shape-estimation methods on SL videos. A perceptual study shows that SGNify's 3D reconstructions are significantly more comprehensible and natural than those of previous methods and are on par with the source videos. Abstract

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) imposes a heavy burden of major adverse cardiovascular events that are associated with considerable mortality and morbidity, and major adverse limb events (e.g., thrombectomy, revascularization, amputation) that can substantially impact patients’ daily functioning and quality of life. Global registry data have indicated that PAD is an underdiagnosed disease in Taiwan, and its associated risk factors remain inadequately controlled. This review discusses the burden of PAD in Taiwan, major guidelines on PAD management, and the latest clinical trial outcomes. Practical experience, opinions, and the latest trial data were integrated to derive a series of clinical algorithms – patient referral, PAD diagnosis, and the antithrombotic management of PAD. These algorithms can be adapted not only by physicians in Taiwan involved in the clinical management of patients with PAD but also by general practitioners in local clinics and regional hospital settings, with the ultimate aim of improving the totality of PAD patient care in Taiwan.

Abstract

Metal-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MESFETs) offer the advantages of efficient gate control and low power consumption due to the large junction capacitance. However, the strong Fermi-level pinning caused by the metal-induced gap states makes it a great challenge to build a high-quality Schottky junction with a large energy barrier and low leakage current. Moreover, the upper limit of the work function of conventional metals is around 5 eV, which prevents the formation of a wide depletion region and the reduction of power consumption. In this work, 2D semimetals with high work function have been used as the gate to fabricate 2D van der Waals MESFETs. Compared with PtSe2 and PdSe2, TiS2 with ultrahigh work function of 6.6 eV forms the largest Schottky barrier height with MoS2. And TiS2/MoS2 MESFETs display a sub-0.1 V threshold voltage owing to the large built-in potential and exhibit a small subthreshold swing of 73 mV/dec. The tuning of the channel carrier density from the back gate can further optimize the device performance and provide a strategy to build AND logic gate in a dual-gated transistor. Our work successfully demonstrates the use of high-work-function 2D semimetal to realize high-performance MESFET with low power consumption. Abstract

Measurements of neutron star mass and radius or tidal deformability deliver unique insight into the equation of state (EOS) of cold dense matter. EOS inference is very often done using generalized parametric or non-parametric models which deliver no information on composition. In this paper we consider a microscopic nuclear EOS model based on a field theoretical approach. We show that current measurements from NICER and gravitational wave observations constrain primarily the symmetric nuclear matter EOS. We then explore what could be delivered by measurements of mass and radius at the level anticipated for future large-area X-ray timing telescopes. These should be able to place very strong limits on the symmetric nuclear matter EOS, in addition to constraining the nuclear symmetry energy that determines the proton fraction inside the neutron star., Comment: submitted to MNRAS

Abstract

This article reports on the inclusive production cross section of several quarkonium states, $\mathrm{J}/\psi$, $\psi {\rm (2S)}$, $\Upsilon\rm(1S)$, $\Upsilon\rm(2S)$, and $\Upsilon\rm(3S)$, measured with the ALICE detector at the LHC, in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 5.02$ TeV. The analysis is performed in the dimuon decay channel at forward rapidity ($2.5 < y < 4$). The integrated cross sections and transverse-momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) and rapidity ($y$) differential cross sections for $\mathrm{J}/\psi$, $\psi {\rm (2S)}$, $\Upsilon\rm(1S)$, and the $\psi {\rm (2S)}$-to-$\mathrm{J}/\psi$ cross section ratios are presented. Abstract

Generating realistic 3D worlds occupied by moving humans has many applications in games, architecture, and synthetic data creation. But generating such scenes is expensive and labor intensive. Recent work generates human poses and motions given a 3D scene. Here, we take the opposite approach and generate 3D indoor scenes given 3D human motion. Such motions can come from archival motion capture or from IMU sensors worn on the body, effectively turning human movement in a "scanner" of the 3D world. Intuitively, human movement indicates the free-space in a room and human contact indicates surfaces or objects that support activities such as sitting, lying or touching. We propose MIME (Mining Interaction and Movement to infer 3D Environments), which is a generative model of indoor scenes that produces furniture layouts that are consistent with the human movement. MIME uses an auto-regressive transformer architecture that takes the already generated objects in the scene as well as the human motion as input, and outputs the next plausible object. To train MIME, we build a dataset by populating the 3D FRONT scene dataset with 3D humans. Our experiments show that MIME produces more diverse and plausible 3D scenes than a recent generative scene method that does not know about human movement. Abstract

Load balancing and response time are the key issues in video surveillance peer-to-peer networks.A hierarchical mana-gement mechanism of a P2P video surveillance network based on the consistent hash with bounded loads is proposed.According to the geographical location of the nodes,the P2P video surveillance network is divided into the different autonomous region,which is divided into one layer of super nodes and multiple layers of ordinary nodes.The ratio of the upstream bandwidth of the node to the bandwidth required by each video transmission channel is used as the upper limit of the node load.It is stratified when the total load of the upper layer nodes reaches the upper limit.CHBL algorithm is used to control the load balance of each layer nodes,which are mapped to different hash ring.The weight of each index of the node is calculated by the independent information data fluctuation weighting method,and then the comprehensive value of the node is obtained by linear weighting.The node with the highest comprehensive value in the child node layer is selected as a replacement node for the separated node.The node with the highest comprehensive value will converge to the upper layer between long-running P2P networks.Compared with the DHT-based P2P network,the simulation results show that the proposed management mechanism can effectively improve the load ba-lance and reduce the overall response time of the network.

This study investigated microRNA (miRNA)-mRNA interactome dysregulation in circulating T cells of patients with major trauma.Patients and Methods: This study included adult trauma patients who had an injury severity score ≥ 16 and required ventilator support for more than 48 h in the intensive care unit. Next-generation sequencing was used to profile the miRNAs and mRNAs expressed in CD3+ T cells isolated from patient blood samples collected during the injury and recovery stages.Results: In the 26 studied patients, 9 miRNAs (hsa-miR-16-2-3p, hsa-miR-16-5p, hsa-miR-185-5p, hsa-miR-192-5p, hsa-miR-197-3p, hsa-miR-23a-3p, hsa-miR-26b-5p, hsa-miR-223-3p, and hsa-miR-485-5p) were significantly upregulated, while 58 mRNAs were significantly downregulated in T cells following major trauma. A network consisting of 8 miRNAs and 22 mRNAs interactions was revealed by miRWalk, with three miRNAs (hsa-miR-185-5p, hsa-miR-197-3p, and hsa-miR-485-5p) acting as hub genes that regulate the network. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis suggested that “chemokine signaling pathway” was the predominant pathway.Conclusion: The study revealed a miRNA-mRNA interactome consisting of 8 miRNAs and 22 mRNAs that are predominantly involved in chemokine signaling in circulating T cells of patients following major trauma.Keywords: miRNA, next-generation sequencing, T cells, adaptive immunity, major trauma, critical illness

Abstract

The goal of open access is to allow more people to read and use research outputs. An observed association between highly cited research outputs and open access has been claimed as evidence of increased usage of the research, but this remains controversial.1,2 A higher citation count also does not necessarily imply wider usage such as citations by authors from more places.3,4,5 A knowledge gap exists in our understanding of who gets to use open access research outputs and where users are located. Here we address this gap by examining the association between an output’s open access status and the diversity of research outputs that cite it. By analysing large-scale bibliographic data from 2010 to 2019, we found a robust association between open access and increased diversity of citation sources by institutions, countries, subregions, regions, and fields of research, across outputs with both high and medium-low citation counts. Open access through disciplinary or institutional repositories showed a stronger effect than open access via publisher platforms. This study adds a new perspective to our understanding of how citations can be used to explore the effects of open access. It also provides new evidence at global scale of the benefits of open access as a mechanism for widening the use of research and increasing the diversity of the communities that benefit from it.

Abstract

Patients with a Class II malocclusion, proclination, severe crowding of the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth, and high mandibular plane angles are a treatment-planning challenge. This case report describes an orthodontic treatment and maxillary premolar extraction without orthognathic surgery for a 18-year old man. Maximum anchorage is needed for upper anterior retraction by using Temporary Anchorage Device (TAD’s). The use of IME and ISW unilateral MEAW was important to relieve upper and lower anterior crowding. After treatment, the patient had a better profile, adequate overjet and overbite. This case report demonstrates that a minimally invasive treatment can successfully correct a severe skeletal Class II malocclusion with large overjet.

Abstract

Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) has been identified as a potentially promising therapeutic target in acute pancreatitis (AP). However, the role of intestinal TLR4 in AP and AP-associated gut injury remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the relationship between intestinal TLR4 and gut microbiota during AP. A mouse AP model was establish by intraperitoneal injection of L-arginine. Pancreatic injury and intestinal barrier function were evaluated in wild-type and intestinal epithelial TLR4 knockout (TLR4ΔIEC) mice. Gut microbiota was analyzed by 16S rRNA sequencing. Quadruple antibiotics were applied to induce microbiota-depleted mice. Differentially expressed genes in gut were detected by RNA sequencing.
