In this note, we use an extension of the trial equation method (also called the direct integral method) for partial differential equations with non-constant coefficients to derive exact solutions in the form of nonlinear waves. The model considered generalizes other classical models from physics like the Klein–Gordon equation, the $$(1 + 1)$$ -dimensional $$\phi ^4$$ -theory, the Fisher–Kolmogorov equation from population dynamics, and the Hodgkin–Huxley model which describes the propagation of electrical signals through the nervous system. As a particular example, the cylindrically symmetric cubic nonlinear Klein–Gordon equation is considered herein.

In this article, we propose a mathematical model using the port-Hamiltonian formalism for a satellite’s three-axis attitude system comprising fluid rings. Fluid rings are an alternative to reaction wheels used for the same purpose, since, for the same mass, they can exert a greater torque than a reaction wheel as the fluid can circulate the periphery of the satellite. The port-Hamiltonian representation lays the foundation for a posterior controller that is feasible, stable, and robust based on the interconnection of the system to energy shaping and/or damping injection components, and by adding energy routing controllers. The torques exerted by the fluid rings are modeled using linear regression analysis on the experimental data got from a prototype of a fluid ring. Since the dynamics of turbulent flows is complex, the torques obtained by the prototype lead to a simpler first approach, leaving its uncertainties to a controller. Thus, the attitude system model could be tested in a future prototype before considering a spatial environment.

In this note, we investigate the existence of exact solutions of a nonlinear partial differential equation with time-dependent coefficients that generalizes the well-known nonlinear wave model with damping. The model under consideration generalizes other classical models from physics, like the nonlinear Klein–Gordon equation, the ( 1 + 1 ) -dimensional ϕ 4 -theory, the Fisher–Kolmogorov equation from population dynamics and the Hodgkin–Huxley model used in the description of the propagation of electric signals through the nervous system. Departing from a two-dimensional parabolic system that describes the spatial dynamics in a predator–prey system with Michaelis–Menten-type functional response, we investigate a general form of that model using a finite-difference approach. The model under investigation is a hyperbolic nonlinear system consisting of two coupled partial differential equations with generalized reaction terms. We impose initial conditions on a closed and bounded rectangle, and a fully discrete finite-difference methodology is proposed. Among the most important results of this work, we establish analytically the existence and uniqueness of discrete solutions, along with the second-order consistency of our scheme. Moreover, a discrete form of the energy method is employed to prove the stability and the quadratic convergence of the technique. Some numerical simulations obtained through our method show the appearance of Turing patterns in the parabolic case, in agreement with some reports found in the literature. Moreover, our simulations also show that Turing patterns are present in the hyperbolic scenario.

In this paper, we include simultaneously additive and multiplicative noise to the Pais–Uhlenbeck oscillator (PUO). We construct an integral of motion of the PUO with a time-dependent coefficient. Viewing the PUO as two coupled harmonic oscillators, we add noise to the corresponding frequencies. The systems are solved with the fourth-order stochastic Runge–Kutta method. Some graphics of the solutions and integrals of motion are presented, and the average deviations are calculated in order to quantify the noise influence.

In this work, we consider axially symmetric stationary electromagnetic fields in the framework of special relativity. These fields have an angular momentum density in the reference frame at rest with respect to the axis of symmetry; their Poynting vector form closed integral lines around the symmetry axis. In order to describe the state of motion of the electromagnetic field, two sets of observers are introduced: the inertial set, whose members are at rest with the symmetry axis; and the noninertial set, whose members are rotating around the symmetry axis. The rotating observers measure no Poynting vector, and they are considered as comoving with the electromagnetic field. Using explicit calculations in the covariant 3 + 1 splitting formalism, the velocity field of the rotating observers is determined and interpreted as that of the electromagnetic field. The considerations of the rotating observers split in two cases, for pure fields and impure fields, respectively. Moreover, in each case, each family of rotating observers splits in two subcases, due to regions where the electromagnetic field rotates with the speed of light. These regions are generalizations of the light cylinders found around magnetized neutron stars. In both cases, we give the explicit expressions for the corresponding velocity fields. Several examples of relevance in astrophysics and cosmology are presented, such as the rotating point magnetic dipoles and a superposition of a Coulomb electric field with the field of a point magnetic dipole.

In this paper, we propose a stochastic model in which the values of the factors involved in the development of a glioma vary randomly in a biologically congruent range. Stability analysis revealed three fixed points which allude to patients with a growing glioma, with an advanced stage glioma and without glioma, respectively. The graphics of the solutions and the diagrams of asymptotic behavior of some of the parameters are presented. We also show the order of influence of them. The results obtained show a decay in serum glucose levels in the presence of a glioma. Moreover, they indicate that the immune system is an important element in the prevention of the growth of gliomata.

In this work, we investigate numerically the classical Burgers-Fisher equation using a modified Bhattacharya method. The partial differential equation under investigation possesses nonnegative and bounded solutions and, under some suitable parameter conditions, these solutions are traveling waves. It is well known that the use of the Bhattacharya approach leads to the design of numerical techniques that are sensitive to zero solutions. However, in this manuscript, we provide a correction of that technique in order to approximate solutions of the Burgers-Fisher equation that are bounded in 0 , 1 . The proposed methodology is explicit, and we establish thoroughly the capability of the technique to preserve the non-negativity, the boundedness and the monotonicity of the numerical approximations, as well as the constant solutions of the continuous model. The new class of methods introduced in this work considers the presence of a free parameter, and we show that this family tends to an explicit and standard discretization of the Burgers-Fisher equation when the free parameter tends to infinity. Some simulations illustrate the main features of the method.

In this work, we propose a discrete system to model the dynamics of individual opinions when the agents of a population have three equally likely choices. The social network consists of a finite number of agents with pairwise interactions at discrete times, and the opinion space is identified as a triangle in the plane. After a suitable homotopic transformation, one may convert the opinion space into the classical circle S 1 of the Cartesian plane. The opinion of each agent is updated following a general nonlinear law which considers individual parameters of the members. We establish conditions that guarantee the existence of attracting points (or strong consensus), and infer the existence of attracting intervals (identified here as weak consensus). Moreover, we notice that the conditions that lead to global consensuses are independent of the weight matrix and the number of agents in the network. The simulations obtained in this work confirm the validity of the analytical results.

The clustering of Raman spectra of serum sample is analyzed using the super-paramagnetic clustering technique based in the Potts spin model. We investigated the clustering of biochemical networks by using Raman data that define edge lengths in the network, and where the interactions are functions of the Raman spectra’s individual band intensities. For this study, we used two groups of 58 and 102 control Raman spectra and the intensities of 160, 150 and 42 Raman spectra of serum samples from breast and cervical cancer and leukemia patients, respectively. The spectra were collected from patients from different hospitals from Mexico. By using super-paramagnetic clustering technique, we identified the most natural and compact clusters allowing us to discriminate the control and cancer patients. A special interest was the leukemia case where its nearly hierarchical observed structure allowed the identification of the patients’s leukemia type. The goal of this study is to apply a model of statistical physics, as the super-paramagnetic, to find these natural clusters that allow us to design a cancer detection method. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of preliminary results evaluating the usefulness of super-paramagnetic clustering in the discipline of spectroscopy where it is used for classification of spectra.

In this short communication, integrals of motion for the undamped and damped cubic-quintic Duffing oscillators with time-dependent coefficients are obtained for the first time in the literature under appropriate analytical conditions. The integrals of motion are obtained using Noether’s theorem, and the conditions for their existence are directly related to the well-known Milne–Pinney equation, which is associated to the Ermakov–Lewis systems. We perform here some numerical simulations to illustrate the validity of our analytical results.

In this article, we use a discrete system to study the opinion dynamics regarding the electoral preferences of a nontendentious group of agents. To measure the level of preference, a continuous opinion space is used, in which the preference (opinion) can evolve from any political option, to any other; for a regime of three parties, a circle is the convenient space. To model a nonbiased society, new agents are considered. Besides their opinion, they have a new attribute: an individual iterative monoparametric map that imitates a process of internal reflection, allowing them to update their opinion in their own way. These iterative maps introduce six fixed points on the opinion space; the points’ stability depends on the sign of the parameter. When the latter is positive, three attractors are identified with political options, while the repulsors are identified with the antioptions (preferences diametrically opposed to each political choice). In this new model, pairs of agents interact only if their respective opinions are alike; a positive number called confidence bound is introduced with this purpose; if opinions are similar, they update their opinion considering each other’s opinion, while if they are not alike, each agent updates her opinion considering only her individual map. In addition, agents give a certain level of trust (weight) to other agent’s opinions; this results in a positive stochastic matrix of weights which models the social network. The model can be reduced to a pair of coupled nonlinear difference equations, making extracting analytical results possible: a theorem on the conditions governing the existence of consensus in this new artificial society. Some numerical simulations are provided, exemplifying the analytical results.

In this work, we consider the propagation speed of the superenergy flux associated to the Einstein–Rosen cylindrical waves propagating in vacuum and over the background of the gravitational field of an infinitely long mass line distribution. The velocity of the flux is determined considering the reference frame in which the super-Poynting vector vanishes. This reference frame is then considered as comoving with the flux. The explicit expressions for the velocities are given with respect to a reference frame at rest with the symmetry axis.

In this work, we consider a system of coupled finite-difference equations which incorporates a variety of opinion formation models, and use it to describe the dynamics of opinions on controversial subjects. The social network consists of a finite number of agents with pairwise interactions at discrete times. Meanwhile, the opinion of each agent is updated following a general nonlinear law which considers parameters identified as the personal constants of each of the members. We establish conditions that guarantee the existence of global attracting points (strong consensus) and intervals (weak consensus). Moreover, we note that these conditions are independent of the weight matrix and the number of agents of the network. Two particular scenarios are investigated numerically in order to confirm the validity of the analytical results.

Eigenvectors of stress-energy tensor (the source in Einstein's equations) form privileged bases in description of the corresponding space-times. When one or more of these vector fields are rotating (the property well determined in differential geometry), one says that the space-time executes this rotation. Though the rotation in its proper sense is understood as that of a timelike congruence (vector field), the rotation of a spacelike congruence is not a less objective property if it corresponds to a canonical proper basis built of the just mentioned eigenvectors. We discuss the problem of wormholes from the viewpoint of gluing together two Reissner--Nordstr\"om-type universes while putting between them a segment of the Nariai-type world (in both cases there are also present electromagnetic fields as well as the cosmological constant). Such a toy wormhole represents an example of one-way topological communication free from causal paradoxes, though involving a travel to next spacetime sheet since one has to cross at least a pair of horizons through which the spacetimes' junction occurs. We also consider the use of thin shells in these constructions.
