The topological connectedness and experimentally determined boiling point for each of a series of halogenated normal alkane molecules were used to derive fractal dimensionalities of these molecules by a simplified version of the method of Rouvray and Pandey. The results, which relate to the time-averaged molecular conformations of the species in the bulk liquid phase, were then used to obtain estimates of the flexibility of the molecules in question. The effects of the halogen atoms are pronounced and reveal a number of interesting trends. Such analysis is of particular value in the medical context, since perfluorinated alkanes and other perfluorinated species are now being employed widely in medical operations as substitutes for body fluids.

This review describes a study of nonmagnetic-defect-induced magnetism of graphene on the basis of a tight-binding model. A vacancy induces around itself a quasilocalized impurity state at the chemical potential and leads to formation of local magnetic moments. The connection between a quasilocalized state around a vacancy and the edge localized states near a zigzag edge is studied in detail. Magnetism associated with many vacancies and edge structures is also reviewed. Some new results of magnetism associated with many vacancies are presented.

Various topological factors governing the electronic properties of infinitely large periodic polycyclic benzenoids are analyzed graph-theoretically by drawing the density of states (DS). The existence or non-existence of NBMO's in the hypothetical cyclic dimer of the network are shown to be crucial for the profile of DS.

Optical Coherence Tomography is an imaging technique for capturing three-dimensional images of weakly scattering sample1. At the core of this technique are an interferometer with low temporal coherence and an optical delay line for in depth movement of the coherent gate. The interferometeric setup has to be robust and with high signal-to-noise ratio. Fiber-optic implementation of the interferometer has the advantages of being rugged, compact and by using SM fiber yields minimal scattering into higher-order modes. On the other hand large bandwidth required for light sources cannot be accommodated by the fiber optic components usually design for a smaller bandwidth. The CeCu 6− x In x compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic CeCu 6 -type structure with a large homogeneity range 0 ≦ x ≦ 1.75. At low temperatures increasing electrical resistivity with decreasing temperature, reminiscent of an incoherent Kondo state, is observed for x = 0.5, 1.25 and 1.38. However, for x = 1.0, the electrical resistivity exhibits a maximum at about 35 K and decreases rapidly at lower temperatures following the T 2 law, suggesting that the coherent Kondo state is realized in CeCu 5 In. From the measurements of the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility of a single crystal, it is found that T K of CeCu 5 In is 28 K, about six times as large as that of CeCu 6 . Among the four 4c sites for Cu in CeCu 6 , one of them may be preferentially occupied by the In atoms.

We describe a boy with Fanconi anemia (FA) who developed acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) (FAB-LI) followed by acute myeloid leukemia (AML) (FAB-M5) at relapse. The patient was diagnosed with early pre-B-cell ALL without preceding aplastic anemia and was treated with ALL-oriented chemotherapy which included doxorubicin (a total dose of 140 mg/m(2) administered), which is a topoisomerase II inhibitor. Complete remission was obtained, but after 38 weeks AML developed. The karyotype of ALL cells at diagnosis showed 46,XY, and that of AML cells at relapse was 46,XY, t(11;16)(q23;p13). An MLL gene rearrangement and MLL-CBP chimeric mRNA were found in AML, but not in ALL. A diagnosis of FA was confirmed by an increased number of chromosomal breaks and rearrangements in peripheral blood lymphocytes cultured with mitogen in the presence of mitomycin C. We conclude that this FA patient developed ALL followed by a therapy-related t(11;16)-AML resulting in an MLL-CBP fusion. A 9-year-old with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) who received bone marrow transplantation from an unrelated donor (UBMT), is reported. He also suffered from congenital heart disease (CHD) consisting of corrected transposition of the great arteries and dextrocardia. The cardiac output was within normal limits. The conditioning regimen included busulfan, melphalan, ALG and TLI. Cyclophosphamide was not used because of it cardiotoxicity. The HLA-phenotype of the donor was identical with that of the patient. DNA typing showed was haplodentical DRB1. The patient is alive 18 months after the UBMT. This case showed that UBMT was possible in a CML patient with CHD, without congestive heart failure.
