This report presents the ICP Materials database for the period October 2020 to December 2021. It includes environmental data from the ICP Materials trend exposure programme for 2020 - 2021 and, in addition, data for temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation amount back to the end of the previous annual exposure programme in October/November 2018. The database consists of meteorological data (T, RH and precipitation amount) and pollution data: Gas concentrations, amounts of ions in precipitation, particle concentrations and amounts of particle deposition. Denne rapporten presenterer databasen i ICP Materialer for perioden oktober 2020 – desember 2021. Den inkluderer miljødata fra ICP Materialer trend-eksponeringsprogrammet for 2020 – 2021 og, i tillegg, data for temperatur, relativ fuktighet og nedbørsmengde tilbake til slutten av forrige årlige eksponeringsperiode i oktober/november 2018. Databasen består av meteorologiske data (T, RF og nedbørsmengde) og forforurensningsdata: Gasskonsentrasjoner, mengde ioner i nedbør, partikkelkonsentrasjoner og mengde avsatte partikler.

Korrosjonsklasse ble beregnet på lokasjon (59°56'11.5"N 5°19'58.4"Ø) i Fitjar, Vestland, Norge, fra årsgjennomsnitt for miljøparametere etter ISO 9223 og ISO 12944-2. Det ble funnet at korrosjonsklassen med høy sannsynlighet er C3 og at dette i hovedsak er bestemt av våt-tiden på omtrent 4500 timer/år, som gjennomsnitt i perioden 2007-2022. Dette er godt innenfor grensene for C3 når saltavsetningen er < 60 mg Cl-/m2døgn og SO2 konsentrasjonen i luft < 30 µg/m3. Disse betingelsene synes med stor sannsynlighet oppfylt på lokasjonen i Fitjar som årsgjennomsnitt i normalår. The corrosion class was estimated on location (59°56'11.5"N 5°19'58.4"Ø) in Fitjar, Vestland, Norway, from annual average environmental values, based on ISO 9223 and ISO 12944-2. It was found that the corrosion class was, with high probability, C3, and mostly determined by the time of wetness (TOW) of about 4500 h/a, as an average for the years 2007-2022. This is well within the limits of C3 when the sea-salt deposition is < 60 mg Cl-/m2day (24 hours) and the SO2-concentration in air < 30 μg/m3. These conditions seem satisfied with a high probability on the location in Fitjar, as annual averages in normal years.

Ed. by: Elin M. Dahlin. The MEMORI project (Grant agreement 265132) was performed in the period 2010-2013. The project was coordinated by NILU - Norwegian Institute for Air Research and included 14 partners, four subcontractors and an advisory end-user group with 8 members. MEMORI aimed at providing the conservation market with innovative, non-destructive, and early warning technology for easy assessment of environmental impact on indoor cultural heritage. For this purpose, a dosimeter and a portable reader instrument were produced. In addition, a new web-based result’s and presentation mitigation tool was developed.

Identifying knowledge gaps in physical preservation of Cultural Heritage prior to 2020

An overview is given of all results from the International Co-operative Programme on Effects on Materials including Historic and Cultural Monuments (ICP Materials), which was launched in 1985. Since then, about twenty different materials have been exposed repeatedly in a network of test sites consisting of more than twenty sites with an extensive environmental characterisation and more than sixty official reports have been issued. Recent results on trends in corrosion, soiling, and pollution show that corrosion of carbon steel, zinc, and limestone is today substantially lower than 25 years ago, but while corrosion of carbon steel has decreased until today, corrosion of zinc and limestone has remained more or less constant since the turn of the century. Unique data are given on measured HNO3 concentrations from 2002-2003, 2005-2006, and 2008-2009, and the relative average decrease was about the same from 2002-2003 to 2005-2006 as it was from 2005-2006 to 2008-2009.

Concentrations of NO2, O3, SO2, acetic and formic acids, HNO3 and NH3 were measured inside and outside a historical building, the Baroque Library Hall (BLH) in the National Library in Prague (Czech Republic). The relationship between indoor and outdoor (I/O) concentration was investigated to assess the infiltration of outdoor generated pollutants. Outdoor and indoor pollution sources were determined and, infiltration of ammonium nitrate and a shift of the equilibrium to the gas phase were the reason for the high concentration of ammonia measured inside the BLH. A significant seasonal variation was observed and interpreted as a consequence of different infiltration regime associated with indoor-outdoor temperature differences, which in addition drives dilution processes of indoor generated pollutants. Based on the indoor air quality assessment performed in the BLH with regard to human and material exposure, there is reason for concern about material preservation and in particular paper at the BLH.

This report presents the database for the period October 2005 - December 2006. It includes the environmental data in the ICP-material broad field test as well as the extension made by the EU MULTI-ASSESS project. The database consists of meteorological data, pollution data as gasses and in precipitation. From the MULTI-ASSESS project it is also reported HNO3 and particle deposits for soiling.

Denne rapporten viser klima og korrosjon på NILUs feltstasjoner i årene 2004-2006. Rapporten har kun med de påviste verdiene for korrosjon og klima i tabellform og er beregnet vesentlig på NILUs oppdragsgivere.

\ud Small glass substrates were coated with a thin granular lead film by thermal\ud vapour deposition in order to test the feasibility of using lead-coated glass\ud as sensors for detecting the presence of gaseous acetic acid in air. The lead glass\ud samples were exposed to acetic acid in increasing concentrations, at\ud a controlled temperature of 23oC and 54% relative humidity for a period of\ud 60 days. The change in the lead films on exposure was systematically investigated\ud by measuring the variation in light transmission at a wavelength of\ud 379 nm. Initial corrosion of the deposited reactive thin lead films leading to\ud lead oxide and lead hydroxycarbonates and/or lead carbonates probably\ud occurred. The analysis showed that the main response was due to corrosion\ud of the lead film and granules with conversion to lead hydroxyl-carbonates\ud and/or carbonates and formation of lead acetate. In addition, about 30% of\ud the response was found to be due to acetic acid adsorption on the lead glass\ud samples. After about 15 days exposure significant saturation and\ud decrease in sensitivity was observed.
