The stellar dynamic-based black hole mass measurement of M87 is twice that determined via ionized gas kinematics; they disagree by more than 3$\sigma$, being the former closer to the mass estimated from the diameter of the gravitationally-lensed ring around the black hole. Using a deeper and more comprehensive ionized gas kinematic dataset, we aim to better constrain the complex morphology and kinematics of the nuclear ionized gas. We use both Narrow and Wide Field Mode integral field spectroscopic data from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer instrument to model the kinematics of multiple ionized gas emission lines. The dataset reveals complexities in the nuclear ionized gas kinematics not seen in earlier observations. Several ionized gas filaments, some with large flow velocities, can be traced down into the projected sphere of influence. We also find evidence of a partially-filled biconical outflow, aligned with the jet. The nuclear rotating ionized gas 'disk' is well resolved in our datacubes. The complexity of the nuclear morphology precludes the measurement of an accurate black hole mass from the ionized gas kinematics. The ionized gas kinematics can be explained with either a 6.6 $\times 10^{9}\rm~M_{\odot}$ black hole with a disk inclination of 25\deg, or a 3.5 $\times 10^{9}\rm~M_{\odot}$ black hole with an inclination of 42\deg, with more support for the former. The velocity isophotes of the sub-arcsecond ionized gas disk are twisted, and the position angle of the innermost gas disk tends towards a value perpendicular to the radio jet axis. An inclination close to 25\deg\ for the nuclear gas disk, and the warp in the sub-arcsec ionized gas disk, help to reconcile the contradictory nature of key earlier results: the discrepancy between stellar and ionized gas measurements, and the mis-orientation between the axes of the ionized gas disk and the jet., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures (3 of them in the appendix). We present cosmological (30−400 Mpc) distributions of neutral hydrogen (H i) in the intergalactic medium (IGM) traced by Lyα emitters (LAEs) and QSOs at z = 2.1–2.5, selected with the data of the ongoing Hobby–Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) and the eBOSS survey. Motivated by a previous study of Mukae et al., we investigate spatial correlations of LAEs and QSOs with H i tomography maps reconstructed from H i Lyα forest absorption in the spectra of background galaxies and QSOs obtained by the CLAMATO survey and this study, respectively. In the cosmological volume far from QSOs, we find that LAEs reside in regions of strong H i absorption, i.e., H i rich, which is consistent with results of previous galaxy−background QSO pair studies. Moreover, there is an anisotropy in the H i distribution plot of transverse and line-of-sight distances; on average the H i absorption peak is blueshifted by ~200 km s−1 from the LAE Lyα redshift, reproducing the known average velocity offset between the Lyα emission redshift and the galaxy systemic redshift. We have identified a ~40 Mpc scale volume of H i underdensity that is a candidate for a giant H ii bubble, where six QSOs and an LAE overdensity exist at $\left\langle z\right\rangle =2.16$. The coincidence of the QSO and LAE overdensities with the H i underdensity indicates that the ionizing photon radiation of the QSOs has created a highly ionized volume of multiple proximity zones in a matter overdensity. Our results suggest an evolutionary picture where H i gas in an overdensity of galaxies becomes highly photoionized when QSOs emerge in the galaxies.

The Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) is undertaking a blind wide-field low-resolution spectroscopic survey of 540 square degrees of sky to identify and derive redshifts for a million Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) in the redshift range 1.9 < z < 3.5. The ultimate goal is to measure the expansion rate of the Universe at this epoch, to sharply constrain cosmological parameters and thus the nature of dark energy. A major multi-year wide field upgrade (WFU) of the HET was completed in 2016 that substantially increased the field of view to 22 arcminutes diameter and the pupil to 10 meters, by replacing the optical corrector, tracker, and prime focus instrument package and by developing a new telescope control system. The new, wide-field HET now feeds the Visible Integral-field Replicable Unit Spectrograph (VIRUS), a new low-resolution integral field spectrograph (LRS2), and the Habitable Zone Planet Finder (HPF), a precision near-infrared radial velocity spectrograph. VIRUS consists of 156 identical spectrographs fed by almost 35,000 fibers in 78 integral field units arrayed at the focus of the upgraded HET. VIRUS operates in a bandpass of 3500-5500 Angstroms with resolving power R~800. VIRUS is the first example of large scale replication applied to instrumentation in optical astronomy to achieve spectroscopic surveys of very large areas of sky. This work aims to study the distribution of the luminous and dark matter in Coma early-type galaxies. Dynamical masses obtained under the assumption that mass follows light do not match with the masses of strong gravitational lens systems of similar velocity dispersions. Instead, dynamical fits with dark matter haloes are in good agreement with lensing results. We derive mass-to-light ratios of the stellar populations from Lick absorption line indices, reproducing well the observed galaxy colours. Even in dynamical models with dark matter haloes the amount of mass that follows the light increases more rapidly with the galaxy velocity dispersion than expected for a constant stellar initial mass function (IMF). While galaxies around σeff≈ 200kms-1 are consistent with a Kroupa IMF, the same IMF underpredicts luminous dynamical masses of galaxies with σeff≈ 300kms-1 by a factor of 2 and more. A systematic variation in the stellar IMF with the galaxy velocity dispersion could explain this trend with a Salpeter IMF for the most massive galaxies. If the IMF is instead constant, then some of the dark matter in high-velocity-dispersion galaxies must follow a spatial distribution very similar to that of the light. A combination of both, a varying IMF and a component of dark matter that follows the light is possible as well. For a subsample of galaxies with old stellar populations, we show that the tilt in the Fundamental Plane can be explained by systematic variations of the total (stellar + dark) mass inside the effective radius. The DEEP2 and COMBO-17 surveys are compared to study luminosity functions of red and blue galaxies to z ∼ 1. The two surveys have different methods and sensitivities, but nevertheless results agree. After z ∼ 1, M*B has dimmed by 1.2-1.3 mag for all colors of galaxies, ø* for blue galaxies has hardly changed, and ø* for red galaxies has at least doubled (our formal value is ∼0.5 dex). Luminosity density jB has fallen by 0.6 dex for blue galaxies but has remained nearly constant for red galaxies. These results imply that the number and total stellar mass of blue galaxies have been substantially constant since z ∼ 1, whereas those of red galaxies (near L*) have been significantly rising. To explain the new red galaxies, a "mixed" scenario is proposed in which star formation in blue cloud galaxies is quenched, causing them to migrate to the red sequence, where they merge further in a small number of stellar mergers. This mixed scenario matches the local boxy-disky transition for nearby ellipticals, as well as red sequence stellar population scaling laws such as the color-magnitude and Mg-σ relations (which are explained as fossil relics from blue progenitors). Blue galaxies enter the red sequence via different quenching modes, each of which peaks at a different characteristic mass and time. The red sequence therefore likely builds up in different ways at different times and masses, and the concept of a single process that is "downsizing" (or upsizing) probably does not apply. Our claim in this paper of a rise in the number of red galaxies applies to galaxies near L". We present a new approach to measure the mass of a super-massive black hole (SMBH) located at the center of a giant elliptical galaxy. This method applies the well-known technique of using the hot, X-ray emitting plasma as a tracer of the large-scale gravitational potential of a giant galaxy (or galaxy cluster) and extends it far down into the central region of a galaxy using high-resolution X-ray data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We report the first detection of a SMBH using this method in the Virgo elliptical galaxy, NGC 4649, and present results of preliminary detections in 3 other systems. In addition to providing interesting constraints on the black-hole masses, we show that the stellar mass-to-light ratios of the galaxies computed from this approach agree very well with the prediction from stellar population synthesis models, thus providing strong support for the underlying assumptions of the method (e.g., hydrostatic equilibrium).

We present an analysis of the luminosities and equivalent widths of the 284 z < 0.56 [O II]-emitting galaxies found in the 169 arcmin2 pilot survey for the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). By combining emission-line fluxes obtained from the Mitchell spectrograph on the McDonald 2.7 m telescope with deep broadband photometry from archival data, we derive each galaxy's dereddened [O II] λ3727 luminosity and calculate its total star formation rate. We show that over the last ∼5 Gyr of cosmic time, there has been substantial evolution in the [O II] emission-line luminosity function, with L* decreasing by ∼0.6 ± 0.2 dex in the observed function, and by ∼0.9 ± 0.2 dex in the dereddened relation. Accompanying this decline is a significant shift in the distribution of [O II] equivalent widths, with the fraction of high equivalent-width emitters declining dramatically with time. Overall, the data imply that the relative intensity of star formation within galaxies has decreased over the past ∼5 Gyr, and that the star formation rate density of the universe has declined by a factor of ∼2.5 between z ∼ 0.5 and z ∼ 0. These observations represent the first [O II]-based star formation rate density measurements in this redshift range, and foreshadow the advancements which will be generated by the main HETDEX survey. © 2013. This paper presents further results from our spectroscopic study of the globular cluster (GC) system of the group elliptical NGC 3923. From observations made with the GMOS instrument on the Gemini South Telescope, an additional 50 GC and ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) candidates have been spectroscopically confirmed as members of the NGC 3923 system. When the recessional velocities of these GCs are combined with the 29 GC velocities reported previously, a total sample of 79 GC/UCD velocities is produced. This sample extends to over 6 arcmin (> 6 Re∼ 30 kpc) from the centre of NGC 3923 and is used to study the dynamics of the GC system and the dark matter content of NGC 3923. It is found that the GC system of NGC 3923 displays no appreciable rotation, and that the projected velocity dispersion is constant with radius within the uncertainties. The velocity dispersion profiles of the integrated light and GC system of NGC 3923 are indistinguishable over the region in which they overlap. We find some evidence that the diffuse light and GCs of NGC 3923 have radially biased orbits within ∼130 arcsec. The application of axisymmetric orbit-based models to the GC and integrated light velocity dispersion profiles demonstrates that a significant increase in the mass-to-light ratio (from M/LV= 8 to 26) at large galactocentric radii is required to explain this observation. We therefore confirm the presence of a dark matter halo in NGC 3923. We find that dark matter comprises 17.5Graphic per cent of the mass within 1 Re, 41.2Graphic per cent within 2 Re and 75.6Graphic per cent within the radius of our last kinematic tracer at 6.9 Re. The total dynamical mass within this radius is found to be Graphic M⊙. In common with other studies of large ellipticals, we find that our derived dynamical mass profile is consistently higher than that derived by X-ray observations, by a factor of around 2.

One of the proposed formation scenarios is the growth of SMBHs from seed intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs, 10^2 to 10^5 M_{\odot}) formed in star clusters. In this context, and also with respect to the low mass end of the M-sigma relation for galaxies, globular clusters are in a mass range that make them ideal systems to look for IMBHs. Among Galactic star clusters, the massive cluster $\omega$ Centauri is a special target due to its central high velocity dispersion and also its multiple stellar populations. We study the central structure and dynamics of the star cluster $\omega$ Centauri to examine whether an IMBH is necessary to explain the observed velocity dispersion and surface brightness profiles. We perform direct N-body simulations to follow the dynamical evolution of $\omega$ Centauri. The simulations are compared to the most recent data-sets in order to explain the present-day conditions of the cluster and to constrain the initial conditions leading to the observed profiles. We find that starting from isotropic spherical multi-mass King models and within our canonical assumptions, a model with a central IMBH mass of 2% of the cluster stellar mass, i.e. a 5x10^4 M_{\odot} IMBH, provides a satisfactory fit to both the observed shallow cusp in surface brightness and the continuous rise towards the center of the radial velocity dispersion profile. In our isotropic spherical models, the predicted proper motion dispersion for the best-fit model is the same as the radial velocity dispersion one. VENGA is a large-scale extragalactic IFU survey, which maps the bulges, bars and large parts of the outer disks of 32 nearby normal spiral galaxies. The targets are chosen to span a wide range in Hubble types, star formation activities, morphologies, and inclinations, at the same time of having vast available multi-wavelength coverage from the far-UV to the mid-IR, and available CO and 21cm mapping. The VENGA dataset will provide 2D maps of the SFR, stellar and gas kinematics, chemical abundances, ISM density and ionization states, dust extinction and stellar populations for these 32 galaxies. The uniqueness of the VIRUS-P large field of view permits these large-scale mappings to be performed. VENGA will allow us to correlate all these important quantities throughout the different environments present in galactic disks, allowing the conduction of a large number of studies in star formation, structure assembly, galactic feedback and ISM in galaxies., 7 pages, 3 figures, proceedings of the "Third Biennial Frank N. Die Studie „Stadtbäume: Mehr Wert als man denkt?“ des Projekts „Baumstark - Stadtbäume in Bielefeld“ widmete sich einer Quantifizierung der Wertschätzung von Bäumen im Kontext urbaner Plätze. Im Rahmen einer Online-Befragung von Bürgerinnen und Bürgern wurde experimentell mit Hilfe von abstrakten visuellen Impressionen untersucht, inwieweit ein Bestand von Bäumen auf die Wahrnehmung und Bewertung von Stadtplätzen wirkt. Unter anderem wurde den Fragen nachgegangen, welche Merkmale von Bäumen geschätzt werden, wie die Bedeutung urbaner Bepflanzung im Hinblick auf die Aufenthaltsdauer und -häufigkeit, den Handel oder die Gastronomie bewertet wird und welchen Wert die Bürgerinnen und Bürger einer Einbeziehung ihrerseits in die Planung der Baumbepflanzung städtischer Plätze beimessen.

The Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) will outfit the 10 m HET with a new wide field and an array of 150 integral-field spectrographs to survey a 420 sq. deg. area in the north Galactic cap. Each fiber-coupled unit spectrograph will cover 350-550 nm, simultaneously. This instrument, called VIRUS, will produce ~34,000 spectra per exposure, and will open up the emission-line universe to large surveys for the first time. The survey will detect 0.8 million Lyman-alpha emitting (LAE) galaxies with 1.9, Comment: 4 pages, 1 Postscript figure. The observational evidence for central black holes in globular clusters has been argued extensively, and their existence has important consequences for both the formation and evolution of the cluster. Most of the evidence comes from dynamical arguments, but the interpretation is difficult, given the short relaxation times and old ages of the clusters. One of the most robust signatures for the existence of a black hole is radio and/or X-ray emission. We observed three globular clusters, NGC6093 (M80), NGC6266 (M62), and NGC7078 (M15), with the VLA in the A and C configuration with a 3-sigma noise of 36, 36 and 25 microJy, respectively. We find no statistically-significant evidence for radio emission from the central region for any of the three clusters. NGC6266 shows a 2-sigma detection. It is difficult to infer a mass from these upper limits due to uncertainty about the central gas density, accretion rate, and accretion model., Comment: 5 pages, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

We investigate the relationship between black hole mass and host galaxy velocity dispersion for QSOs in Data Release 3 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We derive black hole mass from the broad Hbeta line width and continuum luminosity, and the bulge stellar velocity dispersion from the [OIII] narrow line width. At higher redshifts, we use MgII and [OII] in place of Hbeta and [OIII]. For redshifts z < 0.5, our results agree with the black hole mass - bulge velocity dispersion relationship for nearby galaxies. For 0.5 < z < 1.2, this relationship appears to show evolution with redshift in the sense that the bulges are too small for their black holes. However, we find that part of this apparent trend can be attributed to observational biases, including a Malmquist bias involving the QSO luminosity. This article was co-authored by all invited speakers at the Joint Discussion on `Neutron Stars and Black Holes in Star Clusters,' which took place during the IAU General Assembly in Prague, Czech Republic, on August 17 and 18, 2006. Each section presents a short summary of recent developments in a key area of research, incorporating the main ideas expressed during the corresponding panel discussion at the meeting. Our meeting, which had close to 300 registered participants, was broadly aimed at the large community of astronomers around the world working on the formation and evolution of compact objects and interacting binary systems in dense star clusters, such as globular clusters and galactic nuclei. Great advances have occurred in this field during the past few years, including the introduction of fundamentally new theoretical paradigms for the formation and evolution of compact objects in binaries as well as countless new discoveries by astronomers that have challenged many accepted models. Some of the highlights include: a nearly complete census of all the millisecond pulsars in 47 Tuc; first detections of many new radio pulsars in other clusters, particularly Terzan 5; detailed studies of X-ray binary populations and their luminosity functions in many galaxies and extragalactic globular clusters; increasing evidence for intermediate-mass black holes in clusters and greatly improved theoretical understanding of their possible formation processes., 29 pages, proceedings of IAU JD06, to appear in Highlights of Astronomy, Volume 14, ed. The DEEP2 and COMBO-17 surveys are used to study the evolution of the luminosity function of red and blue galaxies to $z \sim 1$. Schechter function fits show that, since $z = 1$, $M^*_B$ dims by $\sim$ 1.3 mag per unit redshift for both color classes, $\phi^*$ of blue galaxies shows little change, while $\phi^*$ for red galaxies has formally nearly quadrupled. At face value, the number density of blue galaxies has remained roughly constant since $ z = 1$, whereas that of red galaxies has been rising. Luminosity densities support both conclusions, but we note that most red-galaxy evolution occurs between our data and local surveys and in our highest redshift bin, where the data are weakest. We discuss the implications of having most red galaxies emerge after $z = 1$ from precursors among the blue population, taking into account the properties of local and distant E/S0s. We suggest a ``mixed'' scenario in which some blue galaxies have their star-formation quenched in gas-rich mergers, migrate to the red sequence with a variety of masses, and merge further on the red sequence in one or more purely stellar mergers. Eleven laboratories have collaborated to study chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) variation in black poplar (Populus nigra L.) across Europe in order to improve our understanding of the location of glacial refugia and the subsequent postglacial routes of recolonisation. A common analysis based on the restricted fragments produced by five primer pairs was used to determine the cpDNA haplotype of 637 samples obtained from genebank collections established in nine European countries. Haplotype 2 was particularly common and was found in 46% of the non-hybrid samples. A total of 81 non-hybrid chloroplast variants were detected. Three haplotypes (from four trees believed to originate from Eastern Europe) clustered together and were very different from the rest of the samples. The remaining samples were divided into two groups, one of which had a largely eastern distribution and samples from the other group were mostly located in the west. This, along with the fact that Spain in the southwest and Austria and Italy in the southeast had high diversity, suggest that there were ice age refugia of black poplar in both southwestern (Spain) and southeastern Europe (Italy and/or Balkan). Results also indicate that the Pyrenees formed a significantbarrier, since only 7 of the 45 haplotypes in Spain exist elsewhere in Europe

We present the luminosity function and color-redshift relation of a magnitude-limited sample of 145 mostly red field E/S0 galaxies at z < 1 from the DEEP Groth Strip Survey (GSS). Most of the E/S0s (86%) form a red envelope in the redshift-color diagram, consistent with predictions of spectral synthesis models in which the dominant stellar population is formed at redshifts z > 1.5. Constructing a luminosity function of the full sample of 145 E/S0s, we find that there is about 1.1--1.9 magnitude brightening in rest-frame B band luminosity back to z = 0.8 from z=0, consistent with other studies. Together with the red colors, this brightening favors models in which the bulk of stars in red field E/S0s formed before z_{for} > 1.5 and have been evolving rather quiescently with few large starbursts since then. Evolution in the number density of field E/S0 galaxies is harder to measure, and uncertainties in the raw counts and their ratio to local samples might amount to as much as a factor of two. Within that uncertainty, the number density of red E/S0s to z = 0.8 seems relatively static, being comparable to or perhaps moderately less than that of local E/S0s depending on the assumed cosmology. A doubling of E/S0 number density since z = 1 can be ruled out with high confidence (97%) if ��_{m}=1. Taken together, our results are consistent with the hypothesis that the majority of luminous field E/S0s were already in place by z = 1, that the bulk of their stars were already fairly old, and that their number density has not changed by large amounts since then., 46pages, 26 figures. As part of the Deep Extragalactic Evolutionary Probe (DEEP) survey, a sample of 190 field galaxies (I_{814} 0.7), a handful of luminous, high surface brightness galaxies appears that occupies a region of the magnitude-size plane rarely populated by local galaxies. The effects of Sodium Nitroprusside (NPN), of Isosorbidedinitrate (ISDN), and of a combined therapy with NPN and the intraaortic balloon pump (IABP) on left ventricular function and on local contraction patterns of normal and ischemic myocardial regions were studied. In acute experiments on 16 dogs the anterior descending branch of the left coronary artery was stenosed to produce a hypokinesia or dyskinesia of the anterior wall of the left ventricle. Regional myocardial function was assessed using the ultrasound transit time method. When the LV filling pressure was initially norman (LVedP 5.7 +/- 0.6mmHg) nitrate infusion (120 microgram/minn NPN: 800 microgram/min ISDN) resulted in an aggravation of the ischemic dysfunction. Conversely, with high initial filling pressure (LVedP 15.4 +/- 1.3MMHg) regional myocardial function in the ischemic area returned to normal under therapy. Additional application of the IABP further improved regional myocardial mechanics. It is concluded, that reduction of coronary perfusion pressure due to nitrate therapy becomes critical when coronary reserve is depleted. Compensation is however possible if ventricular wall stress can be reduced and thus the oxygen consumption and the extravascular component of coronary resistance are decreased. Only when the initial filling pressure is high these conditions are met.
