IntroductionAs we approach the post-antibiotic era, the development of innovative antimicrobial strategies that carry out their activities through non-specific mechanisms could limit the onset and spread of drug resistance. In this context, the use of nanogranular coatings of multielement nanoparticles (NPs) conjugated to the surface of implantable biomaterials might represent a strategy to reduce the systemic drawbacks by locally confining the NPs effects against either prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells.MethodsIn the present study, two new multielement nanogranular coatings combining Ag and Cu with either Ti or Mg were synthesized by a gas phase physical method and tested against pathogens isolated from periprosthetic joint infections to address their potential antimicrobial value and toxicity in an in vitro experimental setting.ResultsOverall, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli displayed a significantly decreased adhesion when cultured on Ti-Ag-Cu and Mg-Ag-Cu coatings compared to uncoated controls, regardless of their antibiotic resistance traits. A dissimilar behavior was observed when Pseudomonas aeruginosa was cultured for 30 and 120 minutes upon the surface of Ti-Ag-Cu and Mg-Ag-Cu-coated discs. Biofilm formation was mainly reduced by the active effect of Mg-Ag-Cu compared to Ti-Ag-Cu and, again, coatings had a milder effect on P. aeruginosa, probably due to its exceptional capability of attachment and matrix production. These data were further confirmed by the evaluation of bacterial colonization on nanoparticle-coated discs through confocal microscopy. Finally, to exclude any cytotoxic effects on eukaryotic cells, the biocompatibility of NPs-coated discs was studied. Results demonstrated a viability of 95.8% and 89.4% of cells cultured in the presence of Ti-Ag-Cu and Mg-Ag-Cu discs, respectively, when compared to negative controls.ConclusionIn conclusion, the present study demonstrated the promising anti-adhesive features of both Ti-Ag-Cu and Mg-Ag-Cu coatings, as well as their action in hampering the biofilm formation, highlighting the safe use of the tested multi-element families of nanoparticles as new strategies against bacterial attachment to the surface of biomedical implants.

International audience; Ultrathin metal nanoparticles coatings are emerging as go-to materials in a variety of fields ranging from pathogens control [1] to sensing. Accessing their mechanical properties is a crucial issue limiting their exploitation in real-life applications. The mechanical properties of metallic nanogranular thin films are unveiled exploiting ultrafast photoacoustic nanometrology in conjunction with bottom-up and top-down approaches based on more traditional techniques [2,3]. Analytical homogenization methods are introduced, allowing to rationalise, in an easy-to- adopt scheme, both the films vibration freqeuncies and radiation damping. The latter yields important information on the granular?s films interfacial layer morphology. Building on the acquired knowledge a variety of applications are proposed, ranging from nano-fluid infiltration sensing [4] to gas-phase separation [5] and bendable electronics [6]. References [1] G. Negli ultimi decenni la chimica colloidale ha prodotto una crescente varietà di nanostrutture inorganiche con proprietà variegate e finemente regolabili, che possono essere ottimizzate per diverse applicazioni. Tuttavia, questa varietà complica la caratterizzazione strutturale dei nanomateriali, le cui piccole dimensioni e l’intrinseca complessità impongono limitazioni tecniche. Questa Tesi ha come obiettivo quello di affrontare tali sfide proponendo nuovi approcci per caratterizzare e descrivere la struttura dei nanomateriali, approcci che sono qui applicati su nanostrutture di semiconduttori piombo-alogeno. Questi materiali sono molto studiati per le loro interessanti proprietà e per la diversità strutturale che esprimono alla nanoscala, e per questo offrono molti interrogativi scientifici. Sono qui discussi quattro casi studio, ciascuno caratterizzato da una crescente complessità. I) La scoperta di nuovi calcoalogenuri di piombo sotto forma di nanocristalli è sfruttata per sperimentare strategie di soluzione strutturale per nanomateriali inorganici basate sull’utilizzo combinato di tecniche di diffrazione a raggi X ed elettroniche. Sono proposte linee guida per ogni fase del processo di soluzione strutturale, dalla determinazione della stechiometria, all’indicizzazione della cella, fino al raffinamento della struttura. II) Viene discusso come le trasformazioni chimiche tra nanocristalli di alogenuri di piombo-cesio prevedano la formazione di dimeri epitassiali come intermedi di reazione, la cui formazione dipende da specifiche relazioni strutturali. Sulla base di questa scoperta, si dimostra che la formazione di eterostrutture epitassiali tra perovskiti e calcoalogenuri può essere sfruttata efficacemente per indirizzare la sintesi fase-selettiva di nanocristalli colloidali. III) Viene proposto un nuovo metodo per caratterizzare la struttura di solidi formati da nanocristalli auto-assemblati, qui dimostrato su superreticoli di nanocristalli di perovskiti piombo-alogeno. Tale metodo si basa su tecniche di diffrazione sviluppate per film sottili multistrato cresciuti tramite metodi fisici, e sfrutta l'analisi di fenomeni di interferenza collettiva nella regione ad alti angoli del diffrattogramma a raggi X del campione. IV) Campioni microcristallini di perovskiti Ruddlesden-Popper, che sono alogenuri ibridi composti da strati organici e inorganici nanoscopici ordinatamente impilati, sono studiati tramite un'analisi geometrica dei loro parametri di cella per determinare come alogenuri diversi si dispongano disomogeneamente all'interno della struttura cristallina del materiale., Over the past few decades colloidal chemistry has provided access to a growing variety of inorganic nanostructures with diverse and customizable properties, which can be tailored to many different applications. However, such diversity presents challenges when it comes to characterizing the structure of functional nanomaterials, where the small size and the increased complexity impose technical limitations. This Thesis aims to address these challenges by developing novel approaches to characterize and describe the structure of nanomaterials, which are here demonstrated on lead halide semiconductor nanostructures. These materials are widely investigated for their appealing properties and the structural diversity they express at the nanoscale, and pose therefore a variety of compelling scientific questions. Here are discussed four case studies, each characterized by increasing nanoscale complexity. I) Colloidal nanocrystals of previously unknown lead chalcohalide phases are used to demonstrate strategies for solving the structure of novel inorganic materials by means of combined electron and X-ray diffraction techniques. Guidelines are proposed for each step of the structure solution process, from the stoichiometry determination to the cell indexation and the final structure refinement. II) Epitaxial dimers formed by cesium lead halide compounds are rationalized as reaction intermediates in the chemical transformation of colloidal nanocrystals, and the structural relationships enabling their formation are explored. Following this lead, perovskite/chalcohalide heterostructures are demonstrated as effective templates for the phase-selective synthesis of colloidal nanocrystals. III) Superlattices of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals are used to develop a novel approach for characterizing the nanoscale structure of self-assembled nanocrystal solids. This method is based on diffraction techniques developed for multilayer thin films grown by physical methods, and relies on the analysis of collective interference phenomena in the wide-angle X-ray diffraction pattern of samples. IV) Microcrystalline samples of hybrid layered Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites, composed by nanoscale stacks of organic and inorganic layers, are investigated through a geometric analysis of their unit cell parameters to determine the inhomogeneous distribution of different halides alloyed within their structure.

Nel contesto olografico, si ritiene che la complessità catturi l’interno di buchi neri, superando i limiti dell’entropia di entanglement. Questa tesi discute l’interrelazione tra le due quantità, trattando aspetti della complessità negli ambiti dell’informazione quantistica e dell’olografia. La complessità quantifica la difficoltà nell’implementare un operatore o preparare uno stato tramite operazioni elementari. Considerevole arbitrarietà emerge dall’identificazione di operazioni con elevato costo computazionale. Per un sistema di n qubit, rileviamo una scelta compatibile con un comportamento caotico della complessità di operatori, richiesto per mimare l’interno di buchi neri. Analizziamo poi la relazione tra complessità di operatori e stati mediante il formalismo delle sommersioni Riemanniane. Diversi candidati sono stati proposti come duale della complessità di stati: il volume, l’azione gravitazionale, e il volume di spaziotempo di opportune regioni. Specializzandoci su sottosistemi, esploriamo le congetture in varie configurazioni statiche, deducendo che la complessità per sottosistemi e l’entropia di entanglement contengono differente informazione. La medesima conclusione si applica ad un modello olografico di quench globale, per il quale la complessità di volume per sottosistemi evolve in maniera non monotòna, contrariamente all’entropia di entanglement. Infine, studiamo un esempio di quench locale per cui l’entropia di entanglement risulta sufficiente a discernere tra diverse realizzazioni olografiche., In the holographic framework, complexity is supposed to capture the interior of black holes, overcoming the limitations of entanglement entropy. This thesis debates the interplay between the two quantities, covering complexity aspects in the quantum information and holographic realms. Complexity quantifies the hardness of implementing an operator or preparing a quantum state through elementary operations. Huge arbitrariness stems from the identification of operations with high computational cost. For an n-qubit system, we detect a choice compatible with exponential lower bounds and chaotic behavior of operator complexity, as required to mimic black hole interiors. Then, we analyze the relation between operator and state complexity using the formalism of Riemannian submersions. Several candidates have been proposed for the dual of state complexity: the volume, the gravitational action, and the spacetime volume of proper bulk regions. Specializing to subsystems, we explore the conjectures in various static settings, finding that subsystem complexity and entanglement entropy contain different information. The same conclusion holds for a holographic global quench, during which subsystem volume complexity evolves non-monotonically in time, contrary to entanglement entropy. Finally, we study an example of local quench in which entanglement entropy suffices to discern between diverse holographic realizations.

Tra le applicazioni all'avanguardia di materiali a base di carbonio nanostrutturato, come grafene e nanotubi di carbonio (CNTs), l'analisi del respiro (i.e. breathomics), il monitoraggio ambientale e l'industria alimentare stanno oggigiorno sfidando la fisica, la chimica e l’ingegneria dei materiali a sviluppare piattaforme di sensori estremamente sensibili, affidabili e stabili, che siano in grado di rilevare piccolissime quantità (ordine dei ppb) di molecole di gas nell’ambiente che le circonda. In questa tesi, verrà presentato lo sviluppo di 6 piattaforme di sensori di gas. Queste piattaforme saranno sviluppate con carbonio nanostrutturato e avranno come scopo principale quello di discriminare potenziali patologie attraverso il riconoscimento di pattern molecolari presenti nel respiro esalato, nonché la loro possibile applicazione nel monitoraggio ambientale degli inquinanti e nell’industria alimentare. Questo obbiettivo verrà realizzato sviluppando dapprima piattaforme a base di CNTs su un substrato di plastica o su silicio/ossido di silicio e successivamente a base di grafene su nitruro di silicio. Verranno esplorati diversi metodi di funzionalizzazione sia per i CNTs che per il grafene, per aumentarne la sensitività, e verranno utilizzati diversi materiali per la funzionalizzazione, incluse nanoparticelle, molecole organiche o sali di diazonio. Tecniche di spettroscopie Raman ed elettroniche unitamente a microscopia a forza atomica verranno utilizzare per caratterizzare i campioni, mentre le esposizioni di gas verranno effettuate in aria, condizione più simile a quella delle applicazioni finali dei sensori, cercando di indagare concentrazioni dei gas selezionati nel sub-ppm o di poche decine di ppm. L’analisi delle componenti principali (PCA) verrà utilizzata per testare le capacità di discriminazione dei gas delle piattaforme sviluppate. Infine, uno dei nasi elettronici sviluppati verrà testato con il respiro esalato di soggetti sani o affetti da broncopneumopatie cronico ostruttive (COPD), dimostrando un’ottima capacità di discriminare e riconoscere le due classi di pazienti., Among forefront applications of nanostructured carbon materials such as graphene and nanotubes, breathomics, environmental monitoring and food industry are challenging physics, chemistry and device engineering to develop extremely sensitive, selective, and stable platform to recognize ppb amount of target molecules in the environment. In this thesis, the development of 6 platforms will be presented. The platforms are based on nanostructured carbon aimed mostly to discriminate potential pathologies through pattern recognition in molecular fingerprint of breath samples, but also for environmental monitoring or food industry applications. This objective will be realized through properly developed devices based first on CNTs on a plastic substrate or on silicon/silicon oxide substrate and then on graphene on silicon nitride. Different kinds of functionalization techniques of graphene and CNTs will be explored to enhance the sensitivity of the pristine layers, as well as different functionalization materials, going from nanoparticles to organic molecules or diazonium salt precursors. The characterization of the materials involves electron and Raman spectroscopies, as well as atomic force microscopy, while gas exposures are carried out in the lab environment, which is much closer to the destination of the developed sensors, trying to investigate a low-ppm range or sub-ppm range of the considered gases. The gas discrimination is assessed through principal component analysis (PCA). Finally, one of the developed devices is exposed to the exhaled breath of healthy subjects or patients affected by chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), demonstrating a remarkable capability to discriminate between healthy and sick patients.

L'inquinamento è uno dei problemi maggiri della nostra società. In particolar modo, l'inquinamneto relativo all'acqua sta diventando sempre più consistente considerando la cresita esponenziale del fabbisogno mondiale. Si stima che nel 2050 la domanda di acqua cresca fino al 50%. In questo scenario è necessario trovare una soluzione a tale problema. in questa tesi viene proposto un metodo innovativo per la fabbricazione di materiali polimerici additivati con nanoparticelle che sono in grado di degradadare inquinanti organici in acqua atterevro il processo della fotocatalisi. Questo metodo permette di degradare direttamente la sostanza inquinante in acqua, ovviando a diversi problemi relativi ai costi e al recupero post-trattamento del materiale utilizzato per la decontaminazione., Water plays a vital role in sustain life on earth. However, the quality of the water resources is seriously affected by the pollution caused by industrial, municipal and agricultural activities. To remediate the toxic organic and inorganic contaminants in water, several physical, chemical and biological water treatment methods are employed. However, current water treatment technologies present limited performance, materials of high cost, and need highly energy consuming infrastructure. In this scenario, the utilization of advanced materials and innovative methods could be helpful for reducing the cost and enhancing the performance of the wastewater treatment. One of most promising method is the Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs). The AOPs use semiconductor materials that are activated by the UV or Visible light irradiation that are able to mineralize organic water pollutants. Currently, commercial available photocatalysts are mostly used in slurry or powder form, but this requires post-treatment processes in order to avoid secondary pollution, causing the increase of the overall treatment cost. To face up such limitation and to resolve problems related to the post-treatment process, the immobilization of the photocatalysts on solid compact matrices is a feasible solution. In particular, the use of polymeric matrices as host solid materials may result in a final system that combines the photocatalytic properties of the semiconductor component with the mechanical properties, usability and cost-effectiveness of the polymers.

Questa tesi di dottorato studia l’interazione della cooperatività con il rumore in sistemi realistici, focalizzandosi principalmente sulla superradianza. Gli effetti cooperativi emergono dall’interazione collettiva di un insieme di elementi con un campo esterno. Esempi degni di nota sono la superconduttività, dove le coppie di Cooper elettroniche interagiscono con le vibrazioni reticolari, le eccitazioni di plasma, che sorgono dall'interazione collettiva degli elettroni in un metallo con il campo coulombiano, e la superradianza, ovvero quel processo di emissione spontanea cooperativa che sorge da un aggregato di emettitori identici. Gli effetti cooperativi sono tipicamente robusti al disordine e al rumore, cosa che li rende interessanti per delle applicazioni a dispositivi quantistici che possano operare a temperatura ambiente. In questo lavoro, inizialmente, introduciamo un formalismo di “master equations” che descrive l’accoppiamento collettivo di un aggregato di emettitori/assorbitori con il campo elettromagnetico, valido quando le dimensioni dell'aggregato sono sia maggiori che minori della lunghezza d’onda emessa/assorbita. Inoltre, il formalismo è valido per accoppiamento sia debole che forte con il campo elettromagnetico e, cosa più importante, permette di descrivere correttamente la superradianza in diversi regimi. In tale formalismo, studiamo l’interazione tra superradianza e rumore termico sia per nanotubi molecolari (di dimensioni minori della lunghezza d’onda associata alla transizione) che sono presenti nei complessi antenna fotosintetici dei Green Sulfur Bacteria, sia pure per superreticoli di quantum dots di nuova generazione, aventi dimensioni maggiori della lunghezza d’onda emessa. In entrambi i casi si dimostra che la coerenza può permanere in presenza di rumore termico alle temperature a cui questi sistemi sono stati analizzati sperimentalmente (temperatura ambiente per i nanotubi molecolari, e 6 K per i superreticoli di quantum dots). Nello specifico, nei nanotubi molecolari mostriamo che la macroscopica delocalizzazione coerente delle eccitazioni a temperatura ambiente, che copre centinaia di molecole, può essere considerata un effetto emergente che origina dall’effetto combinato della specifica disposizione geometrica delle molecole e della presenza di accoppiamenti tra subunità del cilindro, incrementati dagli effetti cooperativi. Questi risultati aprono la strada a nuovi modi per ingegnerizzare dei “quantum wires” robusti al rumore grazie alla cooperatività. Inoltre, la presente analisi di sistemi allo stato solido basati su superreticoli di “quantum dots” di perovskite (CsPbBr3) fornisce una base teorica in grado di comprendere recenti osservazioni di emissione superradiante. Sulla base della nostra teoria, suggeriamo che futuri esperimenti dove si utilizzino quantum dots più piccoli, potrebbe aumentare significativamente la robustezza del sistema al rumore termico, aprendo la strada verso la superradianza a temperatura ambiente in sistemi allo stato solido. Si considerano anche i complessi antenna dei Purple Bacteria, dove è ben risaputo che gli effetti cooperativi incrementano il trasferimento e l’accumulo di eccitazioni generate dalla luce assorbita. Mostriamo come queste proprietà possono essere sfruttate per creare un laser ispirato a sistemi biologici e basato su aggregati molecolari, dove la luce solare, benché debole, sarebbe utilizzata come sorgente di pompaggio. Il trasferimento efficiente di energia dentro questo sistema, all’atto pratico, focalizzerebbe l’eccitazione assorbita in direzione di un dimero molecolare, composto da una coppia di molecole interagenti, opportunamente scelte. L’orientazione dei momenti di dipolo di transizione in ciascun dimero è tale da concentrare tutta l’intensità del dipolo nel livello a più alta energia, lasciando lo stato eccitonico inferiore otticamente inattivo. Un dimero molecolare in tale configurazione, che è ideale per ottenere inversione di popolazione, è chiamato “H-dimer”. Tale H-dimer, nell’archittettura qui proposta per un laser ispirato a sistemi biologici, è posto al centro di un aggregato molecolare ispirato a sistemi biologici. Gli H-dimers, eccitati dagli aggregati molecolari circostanti, raggiungono inversione di popolazione e, dunque, possono emettere luce laser quando tali aggregati sono posti in una cavità ottica. Convertire l’energia incoerente fornita dal Sole in un fascio laser coerente supererebbe diverse limitazioni pratiche inerenti all’utilzzo della luce solare come sorgente di energia pulita. Per esempio, i fasci laser sono molto efficienti nell’avviare reazioni chimiche che convertono la luce solare in energia chimica. Inoltre, dal momento che i complessi fotosintetici batterici tendono ad operare nella regione spettrale del vicino infrarosso, la nostra proposta si presta in modo naturale a realizzare laser a infrarossi a corta lunghezza d’onda, i cui fasci viaggerebbero per lunghe distanze senza quasi perdere energia, quindi distribuendo in modo efficiente l’energia solare raccolta. Nella ricerca di un meccanismo comune alla cooperatività e alla sua robustezza, abbiamo confrontato il modello delle coppie di Cooper della superconduttività con la superradianza in singola eccitazione, mostrando molte somiglianze tra i due fenomeni: in particolare, i sistemi superradianti presentano una “gap” immaginaria nel piano complesso (ovvero, una segregazione tra i tempi di vita degli autostati del sistema) che, in modo simile alla gap superconduttiva, rende questi sistemi robusti al rumore statico. Più in generale, mostriamo che ogni interazione a lungo raggio tra i costituenti di un sistema induce effetti collettivi, manifestati da delle gap nello spettro eccitonico. Perciò, la nostra analisi successiva considera l’effetto delle interazioni a lungo raggio sul trasporto eccitonico lungo catene disordinate. Dimostriamo che la presenza di uno stato collettivo ben separato dagli altri stati influenza tutto lo spettro del sistema, generando dei regimi molto controintuitivi dove il trasporto è incrementato dal disordine o è indipendente da esso, e tali regimi si estendono su molti ordini di grandezza nell’intensità del disordine. Dimostriamo anche che una catena fortemente accoppiata a un modo del campo elettromagnetico in una cavità ottica è equivalente a una catena con interazione a lungo raggio, mostrandosi dunque molto promettente per esperimenti e applicazioni future. Nello specifico, mostriamo che catene molecolari realistiche, ioni intrappolati realizzati allo stato dell’arte e atomi di Rydberg sono tutti in grado di raggiungere l’intensità di interazione a lungo raggio tale per cui il trasporto sarebbe incrementato dal disordine o indipendente da esso, puntando alla realizzazione di un trasporto di energia senza dissipazione in “quantum wires” disordinati., This Ph.D. thesis studies the interplay of cooperativity and noise in realistic systems, largely focusing on superradiance. Cooperative effects emerge from the collective interaction of an ensemble of elements to an external field. Notable examples are superconductivity, where the electron Cooper pairs interact with the lattice vibrations, plasmon excitations, arising from the collective interaction of electrons in a metal with the Coulomb field, and superradiance, that is a cooperative spontaneous emission process stemming from an aggregate of identical emitters. Cooperative effects are typically robust to disorder and noise, making them interesting for applications to quantum devices operating at room temperature. In this work, we first present a general master equation formalism that describes the collective coupling of an aggregate of emitters/absorbers to the electromagnetic field, valid both when the size of the aggregate is larger or smaller than the emitted/absorbed wavelength. Also, the formalism is valid both for weak and strong coupling of the emitters to the electromagnetic field and, most importantly, it allows to correctly describe superradiance in different regimes. Within such formalism, the interplay of superradiance and thermal noise is studied both for molecular nanotubes (of size smaller than the transition wavelength) that are present in the antenna complexes of photosynthetic Green Sulfur Bacteria, and also for novel solid state quantum dot superlattices, having size larger than the emitted wavelength. In both cases it is shown that coherence can persist in presence of thermal noise at the temperatures where these systems have been experimentally analyzed (room temperature for molecular nanotubes, and 6 K for quantum dot superlattices). Specifically, in natural molecular nanotubes we show that the macroscopic coherent delocalization of the excitation at room temperature, covering hundreds of molecules, can be considered an emergent effect originating from the combined effect of the specific geometric disposition of the molecules and the presence of cooperatively enhanced couplings between cylinder subunits. These results open the path to new ways of engineering quantum wires robust to noise thanks to cooperativity. Moreover, our analysis of solid state systems based on perovskite (CsPbBr3) quantum dot superlattices provides a theoretical framework able to explain recent observations of superradiant emission. Based on our theory, we suggest that further experiments, using smaller quantum dots, could significantly increase the robustness of the system to thermal noise, paving the way towards room-temperature superradiance in solid-state systems. We also considered the antenna complexes of Purple Bacteria, where cooperative effects are well known to boost the transfer and storage of photo-absorbed excitations. We show how these properties can be exploited to create a bio-inspired molecular aggregate laser medium, where natural sunlight, although weak, would be used as a pumping source. The efficient energy transfer within this system would effectively focus the absorbed excitation on a suitably chosen molecular dimer, composed by a pair of interacting molecules. The orientation of the molecule transition dipole moment in each dimer is such to concentrate all the dipole strength in the highest energy level, leaving the lower excitonic state dark. A molecular dimer in such configuration, which is ideal to achieve population inversion, is called H-dimer. Such an H-dimer in our proposed architecture for a bio-inspired laser medium, is placed at the center of the bio-inspired molecular aggregates. The H-dimers, pumped by the surrounding molecular aggregates, reach population inversion and, therefore, can lase when such aggregates are placed in an optical cavity. Turning the incoherent energy supply provided by the Sun into a coherent laser beam would overcome several of the practical limitations inherent in using sunlight as a source of clean energy. For example, laser beams are highly effective at driving chemical reactions which convert sunlight into chemical energy. Further, since bacterial photosynthetic complexes tend to operate in the near-infrared spectral region, our proposal naturally lends itself for realising short-wavelength infrared lasers which would allow their beams to travel nearly losslessly over large distances, thus efficiently distributing the collected sunlight energy. In search of a common mechanism to cooperativity and its robustness, we have compared the Cooper pair model of superconductivity and single-excitation superradiance, showing many similarities between the two: in particular, superradiant systems present an imaginary gap in the complex plane (that is, a segregation between the lifetimes of the system eigenstates) that, similarly to the superconducting gap, makes these systems robust to static disorder. More in general, we show that any long-range interaction between the constituents of a system generates collective behaviours, manifested by gaps in the excitonic spectrum. Therefore, our further analysis considers the effect of long-range interactions on excitation transport along disordered chains. We show that the presence of a gapped, collective state affects the whole spectrum of the system, generating quite counter-intuitive disorder-enhanced and disorder-independent transport regimes, that extend over many orders of magnitude of the disorder strength. We also prove that a chain strongly coupled to a cavity mode is equivalent to a long-range interacting chain, thus being very promising for future experiments and applications. Specifically, we show that realistic molecular chains, state-of-the-art trapped ions and Rydberg atoms are all able to reach the needed long-range interaction strength that would show disorder-enhanced or disorder-independent transport, aiming to the realization of dissipationless transport of energy in disordered quantum wires.

In the synthesis of nanostructures by pulsed laser deposition (PLD), a crucial role is played by the environmental deposition pressure and the substrate temperature. Due to the high temperature of nanoparticles (NPs) at landing, other factors may determine the structure of the resulting aggregates. Here, Au and TiO2 nanostructures are obtained by non-thermal fs-PLD in ambient conditions. On Si(100), only TiO2 NPs form fractals with areas up to ~ 1 × 106 nm2, while on quartz Au NPs also form fractals with areas up to ~ 5 × 103 nm2, a much smaller size with respect to the TiO2 case. The aggregation is described by a simple diffusive model, taking into account isotropic diffusion of the NPs, allowing quantitative simulations of the NPs and fractal area. The results highlight the key role of substrate thermal conductivity in determining the formation of fractals. [Figure not available: see fulltext.].
