Background In this study we explored whether one pleural catheter plus single chest tube drainage could achieve a noninferior drainage effect when compared with the traditional two chest tubes in uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for an upper pulmonary lobectomy. Methods Patients that underwent an upper pulmonary lobectomy from January to November 2020 were enrolled in this single-center, randomized, open-label, noninferiority trial. Prior to closure, patients were randomized to an intervention group who received an improved drainage strategy involving one pleural catheter with one chest tube (24 Fr), while traditional double chest tube drainage was applied for the control group. Results A total of 390 patients entered the study, although 190 were excluded for changing nonuniportal surgical approaches or opting for nonlobectomy resections. Finally, 200 patients were randomized (100 in the intervention group and 100 in the control group). The baseline demographic and clinical characteristics were comparable between the groups. The incidence of pneumothorax in the intervention and control groups was similar on postoperative Day 1 (noninferiority, 10% vs. 13%, p = 0.658). In addition, there were no significant differences in secondary outcomes such as incidence of pneumothorax by Day 30, postoperative chest tube/pleural catheter removal time, amount of drainage on Day 1, total amount of drainage after operation, or postoperative hospitalization. A significantly lower pain score was observed in the intervention group (3.33 ± 0.68 vs. 3.68 ± 0.94, p = 0.003). Conclusions The new strategy is noninferior to double chest tube drainage after an upper pulmonary lobectomy offers superior pain control, and is recommended for an upper lobectomy by uniportal VATS.

The Lower Paleozoic reservoir in the Micangshan tectonic belt is a new shale gas exploration area with excellent potential. However, the black shale’s sedimentary environment and tectonic setting and their effects on pore-scale fluid flow have not been thoroughly elucidated and urgently require further research. A large amount of trace and rare earth element data of black shale in this area was tested to analyze the sediment’s provenance, tectonic setting, and coupling process, and nuclear magnetic resonance was applied for fluid flow ability determination. The characteristics of trace elements and rare earth elements in shale samples were drilled from the Upper Sinian Doushantuo Formation, the Lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation, and the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation in the Micangshan tectonic belt. The results reveal that the provenance of the shales was dominated by island arc volcanic rocks and some ancient fine-grained sediments. The provenances of shale in the Micangshan, Huijunba, and Zhenba areas may have a strong genetic relationship with the igneous rocks from the nearest Hannan massif. The provenance of the Niutitang shale in the Ningqiang area may comprise sediments derived from the Longmenshan continental rift system. The provenance of the shale tends to transition from the island arc to the continental margin from the depositional stage of the Doushantuo Formation to the Longmaxi Formation. The Micangshan tectonic belt inherited the tectonic evolution of the South China block, North China block, and Qinling, and those blocks provided the igneous provenance of the shale by island arcs, which were formed due to weathering caused by the process of subduction and collision orogeny. The movable fluid distribution of the Longmaxi Formation and Niutitang Formation is relatively uniform, and excessive pursuit of large amount of movable fluid will be counterproductive to the shale reservoir. The proportion of the cracks was generally less than 3% except for one sample from the Doushantuo Formation with 12.06%. Based on the centrifugation force in this research, the low fluid flow limits were less than 1.47, and there are strong positive relationships between movable fluid saturation and saturated porosity. In this study, the coupling relationship between the material source and pore scale flow is discussed for the first time, and the results can provide theoretical references for local provenance analysis and tectonic movement.

BACKGROUND: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been uncovered to be implicated in the malignant development of bladder cancer (BC). OBJECTIVE: Herein, this work aimed to investigate the role and mechanism of circRNA ubiquitin-associated protein 2 (circUBAP2) in BC progression. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting were used for the detection of genes and proteins. OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: In vitro functional experiments were conducted using colony formation, 5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine (EdU), Transwell, wound healing, and flow cytometry assays, respectively. A glycolysis analysis was conducted by assessing glucose uptake and lactate production. A murine xenograft model was established to perform in vivo experiments. The binding interaction between miR-496 and circUBAP2 or DNA topoisomerase 2-alpha (TOP2A) was verified using a dual-luciferase reporter assay. RESULTS AND LIMITATIONS: CircUBAP2 was highly expressed in BC patients, and high circUBAP2 expression showed a shorter survival rate. Functionally, knockdown of circUBAP2 could suppress BC cell growth, migration, invasion, and aerobic glycolysis in vitro, as well as impede BC growth in nude mice. Mechanistically, circUBAP2 acted as a sponge for miR-496, which targeted TOP2A. Moreover, circUBAP2 could indirectly regulate TOP2A expression through sequestering miR-496. Furthermore, a series of rescue experiments showed that miR-496 inhibition reversed the anticancer action of circUBAP2 knockdown on BC cells. Moreover, miR-496 could attenuate BC cell malignant phenotypes and aerobic glycolysis, which were abolished by TOP2A overexpression. CONCLUSIONS: Silencing of circUBAP2 could suppress BC growth, invasion, migration, and aerobic glycolysis by the miR-496/TOP2A axis, suggesting a promising target for the molecular targeted therapies of BC. PATIENT SUMMARY: Circular RNA ubiquitin-associated protein 2 (circUBAP2) was found to be associated with poor prognosis in bladder cancer (BC). Knockdown of circUBAP2 might suppress BC growth, invasion, migration, and aerobic glycolysis, indicating that it may be a new target for the development of molecular targeted therapy for BC.

In this study, we investigated whether lenvatinib induces ICD in hepatocellular carcinoma and how it affects cancer cell behavior.Patients and Methods: Hepatoma cells were treated with 0.5 μM lenvatinib for two weeks, and damage-associated molecular patterns were assessed using the expression of calreticulin, high mobility group box 1, and ATP secretion. Transcriptome sequencing was performed to investigate the effects of lenvatinib on hepatocellular carcinoma. Additionally, CU CPT 4A and TAK-242 were used to inhibit TLR3 and TLR4 expressions, respectively. Flow cytometry was used to assess PD-L1 expression. Kaplan–Meier and Cox regression models were applied for prognosis assessment.Results: After treatment with lenvatinib, there was a significant increase in ICD-associated damage-associated molecular patterns, such as calreticulin on the cell membrane, extracellular ATP, and high mobility group box 1, in hepatoma cells. Following treatment with lenvatinib, there was a significant increase in the downstream immunogenic cell death receptors, including TLR3 and TLR4. Furthermore, lenvatinib increased the expression of PD-L1, which was later inhibited by TLR4. Interestingly, inhibiting TLR3 in MHCC-97H and Huh7 cells strengthened their proliferative capacity. Moreover, TLR3 inhibition was identified as an independent risk factor for overall survival and recurrence-free survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.Conclusion: Our study revealed that lenvatinib induced ICD in hepatocellular carcinoma and upregulated PD-L1 expression through TLR4 while promoting cell apoptosis through TLR3. Light adaptation or brightness correction is a key step in improving the contrast and visual appeal of an image. There are multiple light-related tasks (for example, low-light enhancement and exposure correction) and previous studies have mainly investigated these tasks individually. However, it is interesting to consider whether these light-related tasks can be executed by a unified model, especially considering that our visual system adapts to external light in such way. In this study, we propose a biologically inspired method to handle light-related image-enhancement tasks with a unified network (called LA-Net). First, a frequency-based decomposition module is designed to decouple the common and characteristic sub-problems of light-related tasks into two pathways. Then, a new module is built inspired by biological visual adaptation to achieve unified light adaptation in the low-frequency pathway. In addition, noise suppression or detail enhancement is achieved effectively in the high-frequency pathway regardless of the light levels. Extensive experiments on three tasks -- low-light enhancement, exposure correction, and tone mapping -- demonstrate that the proposed method almost obtains state-of-the-art performance compared with recent methods designed for these individual tasks., 10 pages, 9 figures

High-potency 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitors are usually featured by time-dependent inhibition. However, the molecular mechanism underlying time-dependent inhibition by HPPD inhibitors has not been fully elucidated. Here, based on the determination of the HPPD binding mode of natural products, the π-π sandwich stacking interaction was found to be a critical element determining time-dependent inhibition. This result implied that, for the time-dependent inhibitors, strengthening the π-π sandwich stacking interaction might improve their inhibitory efficacy. Consequently, modification with one methyl group on the bicyclic ring of quinazolindione inhibitors was achieved, thereby strengthening the stacking interaction and significantly improving the inhibitory efficacy. Further introduction of bulkier hydrophobic substituents with higher flexibility resulted in a series of HPPD inhibitors with outstanding subnanomolar potency. Exploration of the time-dependent inhibition mechanism and molecular design based on the exploration results are very successful cases of structure-based rational design and provide a guiding reference for future development of HPPD inhibitors.

Using agrochemicals against pest insects, fungi, and weeds plays a major part in maintaining and improving crop yields, which helps to solve the issue of food security. Due to the limited targets and resistance of agrochemicals, protein kinases are regarded as attractive potential targets to develop new agrochemicals. Recently, a lot of investigations have shown the extension of agrochemicals by targeting protein kinases, implying an increasing concern for this kind of method. However, few people have summarized and discussed the targetability of protein kinases contributing to the development of agrochemicals. In this work, we introduce the research on protein kinases as potential targets used in crop protection and discuss the prospects of protein kinases in the field of agrochemical development. This study may not only provide guidance for the contribution of protein kinases to the development of agrochemicals but also help nonprofessionals such as students learn and understand the role of protein kinases quickly.

The poplar clearwing moth, Paranthrene tabaniformis (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae) is a serious wood-boring pest of several trees. The ultramorphology of the antennae and proboscis sensilla of adult P. tabaniformis was examined using scanning electron microscope to determine their structures and sex-specific differences. The results showed that the antennae of both sexes are composed of three segments: scape, pedicel and flagellum. Female antennae are clavate while male antennae are pectinate. The number of flagellomeres for females was significantly greater than for males. Seven different types of sensilla were identified on antennae of both males and females: Böhm sensilla, sensilla squamiformia, sensilla trichodea (three subtypes), sensilla chaetica, sensilla coeloconica, and sensilla auricillica (two subtypes), and apical sensors. Three different types of sensilla were found on the proboscis of adult P. tabaniformis: sensilla styloconica, sensilla chaetica, and sensilla basiconica (three subtypes). The sexual dimorphism difference in the number, distributional pattern, the length and the basal width of various sensilla on the antennae and proboscis were determined. This study clarifies the types and sexual dimorphism of the antennal and proboscis sensilla of adult P. tabaniformis and provides useful theoretical foundations for studies on behavioral mechanisms and functions of sensilla of P. tabaniformis. Soccer is regarded as the most popular sport in the world, with millions of people actively involved in the game. Being a contact sport in nature, soccer players are susceptible to various kinds of injuries, such as lower extremities muscle injury. In addition to those familiar injuries that soccer players sustain during the game, traumatic brain injury is also a possibility. Head impacts in soccer could be a result of head-to-head impact with an opponent player, a head-to-elbow impact, an impact with the goal post, an impact with the ground, as well as an impact with the soccer ball, which occurs during a heading manoeuvre. Soccer allows the players to use their heads to hit the ball to pass it to a teammate or even perform heading to score a goal. Although soccer heading is perceived as less harmful as compared to head impacts with other hard objects, many studies have shown compelling evidence that this repetitive heading might harm the brain, thereby leading to traumatic brain injury. Protective headgears designed especially for soccer players have been commercially available in the market for some years. However, the effectiveness of these headgears in reducing the impact due to soccer heading has not been well studied. This paper investigates the effectiveness of two commercially available headgears, the Full90 and the ForceField headgear by means of a heading experiment. An anthropometric test device known as Hybrid III head and neck dummy instrumented with an inertial sensor that consists of a triaxial accelerometer and gyroscope installed at the centre of gravity of the head was used in the experiment. A soccer ball launching machine was used to propel the ball at several inbound velocities. Peak linear acceleration (PLA) and peak angular acceleration (PRA) were recorded, and the head injury criterion (HIC) and the rotational injury criterion (RIC) were calculated. It was found that both headgears failed to reduce the linear components of head acceleration but instead increased the HIC (13 – 66% increment) depending on the inbound ball velocity. With respect to the rotational component of head injury, the Full90 headgear was found to reduce the RIC up to 29%, but the ForceField failed to provide a significant reduction of RIC. Overall, both headgears were found to be ineffective in reducing linear and rotational components of head injury, which could be attributed to the headgear design. Improved headgear design and an improved padded foam are needed to protect soccer player’s brain while performing soccer heading.

Hematopoietic progenitor kinase 1 (HPK1) is a negative regulator of T-cell activation, and targeting HPK1 is considered a promising strategy for improving responses to antitumor immune therapies. The biggest challenge of HPK1 inhibitor design is to achieve a higher selectivity to GLK, an HPK1 homology protein as a positive regulator of T-cell activation. Accurate preoperative localization of tumor-bearing lesions is crucial for the successful surgical management of suspected recurrent parathyroid carcinoma. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of 99m-technetium-labeled methoxyisobutylisonitrile ( 99m Tc-MIBI) single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) and cervical ultrasound, individually and in combination, for preoperative localization of recurrent/metastatic lesions. We also analyzed the value of 99m Tc-MIBI SPECT/CT in detecting ectopic lesions in patients with suspected recurrent parathyroid carcinoma.Twenty-nine patients with suspected recurrent parathyroid carcinoma were included in this retrospective cohort study. Patients underwent preoperative 99m Tc-MIBI SPECT/CT and cervical ultrasound. The reference standard was postsurgical histopathology. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value, and accuracy of the two diagnostic modalities alone and in combination were analyzed.Of the 29 patients, histopathological results revealed 48 metastases/recurrent lesions in 26 patients. The diagnostic value of 99m Tc-MIBI SPECT/CT, cervical ultrasound, and the two modalities in combination were compared for the 27 patients who underwent new cervical surgery. Patient-level analysis of the combined use of 99m Tc-MIBI SPECT/CT and cervical ultrasound had the highest sensitivity (100.00%) and accuracy (96.30%). At the lesion level, 99m Tc-MIBI SPECT/CT had the highest specificity and PPV, at 100.00% respectively, whereas the combined use of 99m Tc-MIBI SPECT/CT and cervical ultrasound had the highest sensitivity, at 97.62%. Moreover, 99m Tc-MIBI SPECT/CT detected six ectopic lesions, and five of them showed increased 99m Tc-MIBI uptake.The combined use of 99m Tc-MIBI SPECT/CT and cervical ultrasound is the most efficient strategy in the diagnosis of parathyroid carcinoma relapse, whereas 99m Tc-MIBI SPECT/CT is the preferred method for localizing and analyzing cervical and extra-cervical lesions before the new surgery.

This study aims to show how fractal analysis can be effectively used to characterize the pore structure of porous tar-rich coal. In this study, tar-rich coal pores were obtained by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). The results showed that the sample had a high porosity and large pore diameter after pyrolysis, and the porosity of tar-rich coal was more than 35% at 600°C. The pore-throat ratio at high temperature was large, resulting in the high mercury retention rate. The pore distribution curves of samples at pyrolysis temperatures of 500 and 600°C were unimodal, and those of samples at room temperature and 150, 300, and 400°C were bimodal. The models for calculating fractal dimension based on MIP include Menger sponge model and thermodynamic model. Experiments show that the Menger sponge method is more reasonable when the pore size is less than 50 μm and greater than 350 nm. For the fractal dimension calculation of the whole pore curve section, the thermodynamic method was more reasonable. The use of fractal analysis in conjunction with the results of classical characterization methods leads to a better understanding of pore evolution in the pyrolysis process of tar-rich coal. The average fractal dimension could also be used as a valid parameter to monitor the textural evolution of the coals.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third leading cancer globally. Metagenomics has been widely used to analyze the association between the gut microbiota and CRC based on bacterial genus- or species-level comparisons, providing evidence of dysbiosis in CRC development. However, this kind of analysis is unable to provide strain-level information for understanding the individual role of a species in CRC. Here, we used culturomics to isolate CRC mucosal samples and selected 158 Escherichia coli strains to reveal their differences in both genomics and functions by means of phylogenetic analysis and inflammatory induction based on cell and animal experiments. Through genomic comparison, these strains were divided into five phylogroups. The representative strains of each phylogroup significantly induced different levels of cytokine secretion by human leukemic monocyte (THP-1 cell)-based Transwell and animal experiments. Further bioinformatic analysis revealed different profiles of single-nucleotide polymorphisms, genes, and metabolic pathways in the different phylogroups, which can improve the current understanding of the phenotypic differences between these strains. The strain differences revealed in both genomics and functions indicate that the microbiota’s function at the strain level should be investigated in order to understand the interacting mechanisms between hosts and gut bacteria.

The aim of this study is to enhance the design of a multilayer and planar metamaterial that serves multiple functions, including high efficiency and ultra-broadband absorption, as well as acting as a narrowband sensor. The primary feature of this absorber is its fully planar structure, which enables the flexible utilization of two distinct absorption functionalities: ultra-broadband absorption, achieved through the application of the MgF2 layer, and narrowband absorption, achieved through the implementation of the Cu layer. To conduct the simulation analyses, COMSOL Multiphysics® simulation software (version 6.0) was employed. The initial innovation lies in the fact that upon irradiation of normal incident light on MgF2 side, the material exhibited an exceptional average absorptivity of 97.0% across an ultra-broadband range spanning from 410 to approximately 2300 nm. Moreover, when the same normal incident light was radiated on the Cu side, the material demonstrated a distinct peak at a precise wavelength of 480 nm, accompanied by an absorptivity of 95.66%. Notably, these results were obtained with the added benefit of angle insensitivity. Such characteristics arise due to the multiple excitation of diverse resonant modes facilitated by the localized surface plasmon resonance and metal–insulator–metal Fabry–Perot cavity. The second innovation focuses on demonstrating that MgF2 can serve as an effective anti-reflection layer, enhancing the absorptivity of the ultra-broadband absorber. The third innovation aims to establish that Cu is the optimal metal choice. Even substituting Cu with other metals did not diminish the absorptivity of the ultra-broadband absorber; it should be noted that alternative metals might negatively impact the absorptivity of the narrowband absorber.

In offshore drilling, accidents such as gas invasion, overflow, and kicks are unavoidable, and they can escalate into blowouts and other catastrophic events, resulting in casualties and significant economic losses. Therefore, ensuring drilling safety requires precise monitoring of gas invasion and overflow. Currently, most overflow monitoring methods used at drilling sites are based on threshold criteria. However, the monitoring parameters obtained during actual drilling operations often contain noise signals, which makes it challenging for threshold-based methods to achieve a balance between improving accuracy and minimizing false positives. This paper proposes a novel method called Pattern-Recognition-based Kick Detection (PRKD) for diagnosing overflow in offshore drilling. The PRKD method utilizes the overflow evolution process by integrating multiphase flow calculations, data filtering theory, pattern recognition theory, the Bayesian framework, and other theoretical models. By analyzing the shape and wave characteristics of the curves, PRKD effectively detects and monitors gas intrusion and overflow based on single parameters. Through case analysis, it is demonstrated that the proposed method achieves high precision in monitoring drilling overflow while maintaining a low false positive rate. By combining advanced computational techniques with pattern recognition algorithms, PRKD improves the accuracy and reliability of kick detection, enabling proactive responses to potential risks, protecting the environment and human lives, and optimizing drilling operations. The case analysis shows that by integrating the probabilistic information of pre-drilling kicks and various characteristic parameters, when the noise amplitude is less than 8 L/s, the PRKD model exhibits superior detection performance. Moreover, when the noise amplitude is 16 L/s, the PRKD model detects the continuous overflow approximately 200 s after the actual overflow occurs and predicts a 96.4% probability of overflow occurrence at the specified location, meeting the on-site requirements. The gas invasion monitoring method proposed in this paper provides accurate diagnostic results and a low false positive rate, offering valuable guidance for gas invasion monitoring in drilling operations.

Fungi are a large and diverse group of microorganisms, and although the estimated number of species ranges between 2 and 11 million, only around 150,000 species have been described thus far. The investigation of plant-associated fungi is beneficial for estimating global fungal diversity, for ecosystem conservation, and for the continued development of industry and agriculture. Mango, one of the world’s five most economically important fruit crops, is grown in over 100 countries and has been demonstrated to have a great economical value. During surveys of mango-associated saprobic fungi in Yunnan (China), we discovered three new species (Acremoniisimulans hongheensis, Chaenothecopsis hongheensis and Hilberina hongheensis) and five new records. The phylogenetic analyses of multi-gene sequences (LSU, SSU, ITS, rpb2, tef1-α and tub2) coupled with morphological examinations were used to identify all the taxa.

In the context of ZnO nanorods (NRs) grown on Si and indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates, this study aimed to compare their degradation effect on methylene blue (MB) at different concentrations. The synthesis process was carried out at a temperature of 100 °C for 3 h. After the synthesis of ZnO NRs, their crystallization was analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. The XRD patterns and top-view SEM observations demonstrate variations in synthesized ZnO NRs when different substrates were used. Furthermore, cross-sectional observations reveal that ZnO NRs synthesized on an ITO substrate exhibited a slower growth rate compared to those synthesized on a Si substrate. The as-grown ZnO NRs synthesized on the Si and ITO substrates exhibited average diameters of 110 ± 40 nm and 120 ± 32 nm and average lengths of 1210 ± 55 nm and 960 ± 58 nm, respectively. The reasons behind this discrepancy are investigated and discussed. Finally, synthesized ZnO NRs on both substrates were utilized to assess their degradation effect on methylene blue (MB). Photoluminescence spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to analyze the quantities of various defects of synthesized ZnO NRs. The effect of MB degradation after 325 nm UV irradiation for different durations can be evaluated using the Beer–Lambert law, specifically by analyzing the 665 nm peak in the transmittance spectrum of MB solutions with different concentrations. Our findings reveal that ZnO NRs synthesized on an ITO substrate exhibited a higher degradation effect on MB, with a rate of 59.5%, compared to NRs synthesized on a Si substrate, which had a rate of 73.7%. The reasons behind this outcome, elucidating the factors contributing to the enhanced degradation effect are discussed and proposed.

This paper presents a novel and an improved cuckoo search algorithm (ISCS), different from other techniques, which sets nonlinear decreasing inertia weight and adaptive scaling factor. As the iteration goes on, these two parameters are controlled by two functions to change the iterations dynamically. At the beginning of the iteration, the values of the two parameters are favorable for global search, and at the end of the iteration, their values are more favorable for local optimization. In this work, 23 classical benchmark functions are selected to improve the accuracy and convergence speed by conducting the simulation experiments on CS, ISCS and other three algorithms. The results show that the improved cuckoo algorithm enhances the accuracy of understanding and speeds up the convergence of the curves. Finally, ISCS is applied to probabilistic neural network (PPN) neural network classification and recognition technology, and the results show that the optimization of ISCS can effectively improve the classification accuracy of the test sets, and has diverse applications. &nbsp
