Esta obra se notabilizou não apenas por ser um estudo profundo, rigoroso e inovador acerca da filosofia espinosana e das filosofias do “um e do todo” (hen kai pan), essenciais para a formação de Schelling, Hegel e Hölderlin, mas também por sua crítica à rigidez e à pretensão sistemática do Iluminismo (representado por Mendelssohn), assim como por sua abordagem original e hábil dos principais temas metafísicos e morais da história da filosofia. Jacobi, além de grande escritor, é um verdadeiro historiador da filosofia, e trata com cuidado as ideias dos autores que discute. Uma conversa com Lessing em 1780 serve de motivação inicial para a investigação; a partir daí, o livro se transforma num monumento literário-filosófico, envolvendo interlocutores de peso como Herder, Hamann e Goethe, entre outros.

The relationship between hypochondria--a fashionable disease in the late 18th c.--on the one hand and some of the most important social and cultural developments during the same period on the other, are approached through the correspondence of Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi, merchant, court councilor and author, during a lifetime of residence in Düsseldorf, between 1762 and 1794. Different points are broached in this chapter: The nervous disease called hypochondria fulfilled different functions in the formation of bourgeois ideology, especially regarding the principle of achievement. An effect of autonomy was the main phantasm of the enlightened subject: the body was experienced as an enemy of the most fundamental and almost "holy" grounds of bourgeois social life. Therefore each bodily experience was in itself pathological. The progression of literacy must be seen as one of the most profound changes of the society in the late eighteenth century. Some evidence suggests that this process has an impact on the somatic malfunctions associated with hypochondria.

Erstmalig wird hier die Urfassung eines Werkes neu zuganglich gemacht, das bei seinem Erscheinen (1775/76) starkes Aufsehen erregte, das mehrere Generationen hindurch Anklang in den Kreisen des literarisch gebildeten Publikums fand, im Verlauf des 19. Jahrhunderts aber in Vergessenheit geriet und nur noch in der Literaturgeschichte genannt wurde – meist versehen mit dem Etikett einer erheblichen darstellerischen Unzulanglichkeit. Seitdem aber in jungster Zeit Personlichkeit und Philosophie seines Verfassers wieder starkeres Interesse erregt haben, wird auch dieses fruhe dichterische Produkt neue Beachtung fordern durfen. Wahrend es in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur – sie ist uberwiegend alteren Datums – mehrmals vorzugsweise unter biographischem Aspekt und in seiner spateren Gestalt behandelt wurde, ist die auserordentliche geistesgeschichtliche Bedeutung dieser ersten Fassung noch nicht naher untersucht worden. Ja, es erscheint denkbar, das dieses Werk auch hinsichtlich seiner formalen und stilistischen Struktur eine andere Bewertung erfahren konnte, als das an gegenstandlich-realistischen Darstellungsidealen orientierte Urteil des 19. Jahrhunderts und mancher Nachfolger es zulies.
