Abstract

The intrathecally administered antisense oligonucleotide tofersen reduces synthesis of the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) protein and is being studied in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) associated with mutations in SOD1 (SOD1 ALS).In this phase 3 trial, we randomly assigned adults with SOD1 ALS in a 2:1 ratio to receive eight doses of tofersen (100 mg) or placebo over a period of 24 weeks. The primary end point was the change from baseline to week 28 in the total score on the ALS Functional Rating Scale-Revised (ALSFRS-R; range, 0 to 48, with higher scores indicating better function) among participants predicted to have faster-progressing disease. Secondary end points included changes in the total concentration of SOD1 protein in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), in the concentration of neurofilament light chains in plasma, in slow vital capacity, and in handheld dynamometry in 16 muscles. A combined analysis of the randomized component of the trial and its open-label extension at 52 weeks compared the results in participants who started tofersen at trial entry (early-start cohort) with those in participants who switched from placebo to the drug at week 28 (delayed-start cohort).A total of 72 participants received tofersen (39 predicted to have faster progression), and 36 received placebo (21 predicted to have faster progression). Tofersen led to greater reductions in concentrations of SOD1 in CSF and of neurofilament light chains in plasma than placebo. In the faster-progression subgroup (primary analysis), the change to week 28 in the ALSFRS-R score was -6.98 with tofersen and -8.14 with placebo (difference, 1.2 points; 95% confidence interval [CI], -3.2 to 5.5; P = 0.97). Results for secondary clinical end points did not differ significantly between the two groups. A total of 95 participants (88%) entered the open-label extension. At 52 weeks, the change in the ALSFRS-R score was -6.0 in the early-start cohort and -9.5 in the delayed-start cohort (difference, 3.5 points; 95% CI, 0.4 to 6.7); non-multiplicity-adjusted differences favoring early-start tofersen were seen for other end points. Lumbar puncture-related adverse events were common. Neurologic serious adverse events occurred in 7% of tofersen recipients.In persons with SOD1 ALS, tofersen reduced concentrations of SOD1 in CSF and of neurofilament light chains in plasma over 28 weeks but did not improve clinical end points and was associated with adverse events. The potential effects of earlier as compared with delayed initiation of tofersen are being further evaluated in the extension phase. Abstract

Tracing the vaccines from the manufacturing labs till the health centers administering doses to child is a cumbersome process with the involvement of large number of stakeholders and with multiple levels of book-keeping mechanisms. This work primarily focuses on the problem of traceability of immunization vaccines from manufacturing facility, through the distribution mechanisms in cold storage network and the vaccine handling/administration facilities, till the end consumer in the Indian context. The proposed research named, Immunochain is a state-of-the-art big data and blockchain technologies powered, mobile/web-enabled vaccine traceability solution for immunization programs in India. It is vendor neutral, scalable, replicable, and reusable across different immunization programs in any geographical context. Experiments and pilot testing on Indian geography indicates that the proposed approach outperforms some of the existing approaches in vaccine traceability and record management systems.

Abstract

The pandemic has devastated the whole economy with losing many human lives as well. The hard-hit aspect of the pandemic was gathering the people in public and working together in any industry. It has resulted in a deviation of planning in the supply chain and its related services. Technology adoption has dramatically changed many organizations' revenue patterns with high income on technology adoption and low income on non-adoption. The timeline of technology adoption was also the biggest concern for many firms because of restrictions on the people's movement. The research has been done on technology usage in different supply chain functions and its effectiveness in business performance. The chapter contents displayed the possible outcomes of the technology and its importance of adoption. The supply chain techno-umbrella has been portrayed as a saver of the pandemic during the non-revenue time. The chapter also described the various available forms of technology in the decision-making of the supply chain processes.

13. SARS-CoV-2 Incidence in K-12 School Districts with Mask-Required Versus Mask-Optional Policies - Arkansas, August-October 2021

Abstract

Masks are effective at limiting transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 (1), but the impact of policies requiring masks in school settings has not been widely evaluated (2-4). During fall 2021, some school districts in Arkansas implemented policies requiring masks for students in kindergarten through grade 12 (K-12). To identify any association between mask policies and COVID-19 incidence, weekly school-associated COVID-19 incidence in school districts with full or partial mask requirements was compared with incidence in districts without mask requirements during August 23-October 16, 2021. Three analyses were performed: 1) incidence rate ratios (IRRs) were calculated comparing districts with full mask requirements (universal mask requirement for all students and staff members) or partial mask requirements (e.g., masks required in certain settings, among certain populations, or if specific criteria could not be met) with school districts with no mask requirement; 2) ratios of observed-to-expected numbers of cases, by district were calculated; and 3) incidence in districts that switched from no mask requirement to any mask requirement were compared before and after implementation of the mask policy. Mean weekly district-level attack rates were 92-359 per 100,000 persons in the community* and 137-745 per 100,000 among students and staff members; mean student and staff member vaccination coverage ranged from 13.5% to 18.6%. Multivariable adjusted IRRs, which included adjustment for vaccination coverage, indicated that districts with full mask requirements had 23% lower COVID-19 incidence among students and staff members compared with school districts with no mask requirements. Observed-to-expected ratios for full and partial mask policies were lower than ratios for districts with no mask policy but were slightly higher for districts with partial policies than for those with full mask policies. Among districts that switched from no mask requirement to any mask requirement (full or partial), incidence among students and staff members decreased by 479.7 per 100,000 (p0.01) upon implementation of the mask policy. In areas with high COVID-19 community levels, masks are an important part of a multicomponent prevention strategy in K-12 settings (5).

The main aim behind making this study is to know how public, private and foreign banks are operating their business and how NPAs play role to the operations of these banks. The is also focusing upon existing system in India to solve the problem of NPAs and comparative analysis to understand which bank is playing what role with concerned to NPAs. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of public, private, and foreign commercial banks in terms of their NPA status and management in terms of operational performance of fifteen banks, five each from the public, private, and foreign sectors. Abstract

Objective The objective of this review is to identify and map literature related to safe injection practices among anesthesia providers in developed nations. The mapped literature will be used to determine if there is sufficient literature available to pose specific questions that can be valuably addressed, through a future systematic review, to reduce the prevalence of unsafe injections. Introduction A safe injection is one that does not harm the recipient, does not expose the healthcare worker to avoidable risk, and does not result in waste that is a danger to the community. The literature is replete with examples of disease outbreaks connected to unsafe injections via the misuse of syringes, needles and medications. Many such outbreaks involve unsafe injections by anesthesia providers. Inclusion criteria This scoping review will consider any research article or policy document, including unpublished reports, that provides information related to safe injection practices by anesthesia providers in developed nations. Methods For studies published in English from 2000, the databases to be searched include Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL and Google Scholar. The search for unpublished literature will include the websites of anesthesia organizations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Institutes of Health. Results will be screened by two independent reviewers who will use a standardized tool to independently extract data from each included source. The results of the review will be presented as a map of the data extracted in a tabular form and in a narrative descriptive summary.

Abstract

Background Despite the prevalent use of geosocial networking dating apps (GNDAs), there is limited research on their impact on sexual health outcomes among young music festivals attendees. Objective This study aims to explore the use of GNDAs and risky sexual behaviors of young adults attending a music festival. Methods The music festival attendees (N=862) completed a cross-sectional questionnaire study encompassing demographics, dating app use, and risky sexual behaviors in the past year. Associations between these variables were estimated using bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results Of the respondents, 51.9% (448/862) had used GNDAs in the previous year. Compared with people who had 1 partner, people who had 2-5 sexual partners in the previous year had almost 7 times the odds of using dating apps (odds ratio [OR] 6.581, 95% CI 4.643-9.328) and those who had more than 5 partners had 14 times the odds of using dating apps (OR 14.294, 95% CI 8.92-22.906). Condom users were more likely to be app users (P Conclusions This study identified that festival goers engaging in certain high-risk sexual behaviors, including casual sex, having multiple sexual partners, and having sex without discussion about STI status and boundaries, are more likely to use dating apps. Festival goers who perceived sex without any form of contraception, having sex while drunk, and having multiple sexual partners as risky were more likely to be app users. Policy makers and GNDA developers should acknowledge the vulnerability of their users to adverse sexual health outcomes and use GNDAs as a platform to promote risk-reduction practices.

Abstract

With its innumerable features, carrageenan and its associated hydrogels are a group of promising candidates for various biomedical applications. The requirement of smart drug delivery platforms and solutions for various biomedical needs finds a great scope in these natural polysaccharides. Strong negative charge, unique gelling mechanism, the abundance of functional groups, and strong water absorption property make this seaweed-derived, natural, sulfated, linear polysaccharide a versatile candidate for sustained and controlled drug delivery applications. Carrageenan has extensive applications in the field of drug delivery as well as in the fields of tissue engineering and wound healing. The abundance of functional groups opens ample scope for chemical modification for the enhancement of the physicochemical properties of the hydrogel. In this chapter, we outline the diverse applications of carrageenan in the fields of tissue engineering, drug delivery, and wound healing. The recent progress made by carrageenan-based hydrogels highlighted in this chapter reaffirms the fact that carrageenan and related hydrogels are effective biomaterials for drug delivery, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine.

The study focused on understanding the impact of advertisement on adult buying behavior towards fast moving consumer goods among professional students. FMCG industry is the highly competitive industry where advertisement plays a vital role. MBA, MCA and Engineering students were selected for the study. A questionnaire was developed, which carried questions related to the demographic variables, purchase factors, advertisement factors, product and brand attributes. The collected data were coded, analyzed and tabulated with at most care. From the findings and discussions of the study and also from the literature review we came to the conclusion that advertisement influences the purchase factors which influence the buying behavior of the customers. The study started with a theoretical framework as attitude towards advertising influence both purchase factors and buying behavior, but this model was disproved and a new model has been developed using Structural Equation Model. Abstract

Background Pill testing services could potentially be used to reduce drug-related harm. This study aims to identify patterns of ecstasy use among live music event attendees; explore the opinions and potential usage of illicit pill testing programs and examine factors associated with the likelihood of still taking a pill containing a potential harmful substance. Methods A cross-sectional survey was completed by 760 people attending a major Australian live music event in 2017. Results The most commonly used drug in the last 12 months was ecstasy (73.9%). About 5% of people who use drugs had sought medical attention due to consumption of ecstasy. People who use drugs agreed “a lot” that pill testing should be provided for free at live music events (82.2%) and that it should be combined with harm reduction advice (62.9%). Additionally, 32% of all participants agreed ‘a lot’ that they would be more likely to take illicit drugs at a music festival if pill-testing services were present. However, if people perceived that a harmful substance was detected in their drugs after using a pill testing service, 52.3% of people who have used illicit drugs reported that they would ‘not at all’ be likely to still consume the drug. They also reported that they would still take a pill if testing demonstrated the presence of unintended MDMA-type substances (70.3%), amphetamines (31.2%) or ketamine (27.8%). Multivariate analyses demonstrated that only increased frequency of ecstasy use was significantly associated with taking a pill despite pill testing services detecting a harmful substance. Gender, age, alcohol and previously seeking ecstasy-related medical attention were not associated in the multivariate analyses. Conclusions A high proportion of live music attendees consume alcohol and ecstasy. Both people who have and who have not used illicit drugs support the implementation of pill testing services. People reported they would change their consumption patterns according to the results given by pill testing services. The findings may be used to stimulate public debate, and assist drug and alcohol policy makers in the implementation of harm minimisation strategies such as combining pill testing services with harm reduction advice.

Intensive care for waste management workers as emergency must be skilled in providing end-of-danger to their health. Crucial in this kind of care is end-of-danger decision-making, which is a complex process involving a variety of stakeholders and requiring adequate justification to safety and good health. The aim of this systematic survey is to analyze approach tackling ethical issues in relation to the danger of COVID-19 and the Health of waste management front liners, for intensive care approach. It explores the ethical positions, arguments and principles of waste management and their exposure to COVID-19 waste from known and unknown. A survey form search was conducted in e-databases and grey literature sources for the time period of month. The constant comparative method was used for qualitative and quantitative analysis which include online and papers survey form in order to identify ethical content including ethical positions, waste disposal, ethical arguments, equipment’s used, and ethical principles used in the decision-making process in halting the danger of COVID-19 with and of waste management front liners. In the Tables1, 2 and 3 we have identified a good number of unethical positions and practises among the waste management front liners. Five positions were identified as substantive, the unavailability of the most essential preventive equipment such; as Overall coat, Booths, Hardware gloves, and Mask (Mouth and Face) not available responses with percentage rate of 49.1%, 4.55%, 73.71%, 68.10%, and 66.67% when compared to the total number of respondent, which may cause a threat to the fight of this Virus if this groups needs and welfare is neglected. We have demonstrated that recommendations and guidelines designed specifically by intensive or critical care experts for intensive care units to consider and promote the waste management front liners as one arm of government fighting the menace of COVID-19 by Making the communities and surrounding clean and hygiene.

The Indian retail industry is the fifth largest in the world. Comprising of organized and unorganized sectors, India retail industry is one of the fastest growing industries in India, especially over the last few years. Though initially, the retail industry in India was mostly unorganized, however with the change of tastes and preferences of the consumers, the industry is getting more popular these days and getting organized as well. With growing market demand, the industry is expected to grow at a pace of 25-30% annually. The India retail industry is expected to grow from Rs. 35,000 crore in 2004-05 to Rs. 109,000 crore by the year 2010. In 2007, the retail trade in India had a share of 8-10% in the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of the country. The study examines the role of regional brands in connecting customers in food retailing. Private labels or store brands are on escalating journey for growth in last few years in Indian market. Abstract

Sexting is widely prevalent among young adults; however, the impact of sexting on mental health is not fully understood. This study aimed to investigate sexting behavior among young adults (18-30 years) attending an Australian music festival and the impact of sexting on mental health. A paper survey was completed by 776 respondents. Psychological distress (Kessler 6) was classified as "distressed" or "not distressed." Univariate and logistic regressions were used to test the associations between sexting and distress. In the past 12 months, 53.1 percent of respondents had sent a sexually explicit message, 43.1 percent had sent a sexually explicit image, 61.2 percent had received a sexually explicit message, and 55.1 percent had received a sexually explicit image. Three quarters of respondents (73.1 percent) felt that sexting could have a positive impact. No association was found between the frequency of sending and receiving sexually explicit images or messages in univariate analyses. However, the more unwanted messages/images were received in the past year, the more likely respondents were to be distressed as seen in univariate analyses. After adjusting for gender, sexual orientation, and alcohol, people who received 5 or more unsolicited messages were 2.4 times more likely to be distressed (odds ratio = 2.42, 95% confidence interval = 1.33-4.40

Abstract

Background Positive youth development (PYD) models are effective in improving adolescent sexual health. Adolescent programs including peer educators, parents and the wider community also demonstrate effectiveness in improving sexual health outcomes. An innovative Positive Adolescent Sexual Health (PASH) Conference model has been introduced in Northern NSW, Australia. It is run by the North Coast PASH Consortium, which is based on a health promotion framework. It takes a positive and holistic approach to sexual health education, and incorporates peer educators, parents, community workers and teachers. This study provides an introductory evaluation of the PASH Conference and identifies areas for increased effectiveness. It is intended as an early piece of research to inform future evaluations and to provide introductory information for public health educators. Methods Data collection included semi-structured interviews with 13 key stakeholders of the PASH Conference. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using deductive thematic analysis. Results Subjects included 2 teachers, 2 parents, 2 youth conference workers, 2 organisers, 2 presenters and 3 Peer Educators engaging Peers (PEEPs). Stakeholders perceived that young people were engaged to strengthen their sexual health and wellbeing due to many factors. These followed 3 themes: a safe and open learning environment, empowerment of young people and involvement of the support system and broader community. Multiple recommendations were identified across 2 themes: changes to conference format and planning, and enhancing stakeholder engagement. Discussion The PASH Conference is a promising new youth development design promoting positive adolescent sexual health, which may provide a feasible model for public health educators to trial. Elements of the conference identified as engaging to youth align well with those in PYD research literature. This study provides an early piece of research to inform the design of future research on the PASH Conference including evaluation of behavioural outcomes. It provides introductory information to inform PASH Conference development to further increase its effectiveness. Abstract

Objectives. To determine the confidence and ability to use condoms correctly and consistently and the predictors of confidence in young Australians attending a festival. Methods. 288 young people aged 18 to 29 attending a mixed-genre music festival completed a survey measuring demographics, self-reported confidence using condoms, ability to use condoms, and issues experienced when using condoms in the past 12 months. Results. Self-reported confidence using condoms was high (77%). Multivariate analyses showed confidence was associated with being male (P<0.001) and having had five or more lifetime sexual partners (P=0.038). Reading packet instructions was associated with increased condom use confidence (P=0.011). Amongst participants who had used a condom in the last year, 37% had experienced the condom breaking and 48% had experienced the condom slipping off during intercourse and 51% when withdrawing the penis after sex. Conclusion. This population of young people are experiencing high rates of condom failures and are using them inconsistently or incorrectly, demonstrating the need to improve attitudes, behaviour, and knowledge about correct and consistent condom usage. There is a need to empower young Australians, particularly females, with knowledge and confidence in order to improve condom use self-efficacy.

Big data revolution emerged with greater opportunities as well as challenges. Some of the major challenges include capturing, storing, transferring, analysing, processing and updating these large and complex datasets. Traditional data handling techniques cannot manage this fast growing data. Apache Hadoop is one of the best technologies which can address the challenges involved in big data handling. Hadoop is a centralised, distributed data storage model. InterPlanetary file system (IPFS) is an emerging technology which can provide a decentralised distributed storage. By integrating both these technologies, we can create a better framework for the distributed storage and processing of big data. In the proposed work, we formulated a model for big data placement, replication and processing by combining the features of Hadoop and IPFS. Hadoop distributed file system and IPFS jointly handle the data placement and replication tasks and the programming framework MapReduce in Hadoop handle the data processing task. The experimental result shows that the proposed framework can achieve cost-effective storage as well as faster processing of big data.

While these beliefs have been the focus of the current standard treatment for HD, it is of significant clinical interest to further examine other constructs that may be linked to, or may underliethese beliefs, as well as the pathology of HD. To this end, the current study aimed to build on existing findings regarding the relationship of compromised self-identity with HD. Specifically, we investigated the relationship between self-criticism, shame, hoarding beliefs, and severity of HD symptoms among 104 treatment-seeking individuals with HD. We found that self-criticism and shame are positively associated with HD symptoms and hoarding related beliefs. Moreover, our data shed light on how these factors are connected by elucidating the indirect effects of self-criticism and shame on HD symptoms, mediated through beliefs about inflated sense of responsibility over possessions. The findings have implications for future research to examine interventions targeting compromised self-identity, including self-criticism and shame, among individuals with HD.

Abstract

With the rising popularity of UAVs in the civilian world, we are currently witnessing and paradim shift in terms of operational safety of flying vehicles. Safe and ubiquitous human-system interaction shall remain the core requirement but those prescribed in general aviation are not adapted for UAVs. Yet we believe it is possible to leverage the specific aspects of unmanned aviation to meet acceptable safety requirements. We start this paper with by discussing the new operational context of civilian UAVs and investigate the meaning of safety in light of this new context. Next, we explore the different approaches to ensuring system safety from an avionics point of view. Subsets of operational requirements such as geofencing or mechanical systems for termination or impact limitation can easily be implemented. These are presented with the goal of limiting the collateral damages of a system failure. We then present some experimental results regarding two of the major problems with UAVs. With actual impacts, we demonstrate how dangerous uncontrolled crashes can be. Furthermore, with the large number of runaway drone experiences during civilian operations, the risk is even higher as they can travel a long way before crashing. We provide data on such a case where the software controller is working, keeping the UAV in the air, but the operator is unable to actually control the system. It should be terminated! Finally, after having analyzed the context and some actual solutions, based on a minimal set of requirement and our own experience, we are proposing a simple mechanical based safety system. It unequivocally terminates the flight in the most efficient way by instantly removing parts of the propellers leaving a minimal lifting surface. Abstract

Background Drug checking is a harm reduction strategy which allows users to check the content and purity of illicit drugs. Although drug checking has been trialled internationally, with demonstrated value as a harm reduction and health promotion strategy, the use of such services in Australia remains a contentious issue. This study aimed to investigate the proportion and patterns of illicit drug use among young people, their attitudes towards drug checking at festivals and the potential impact of drug checking on intended drug use behaviour. Methods The survey was conducted at a major Australian music festival in 2016. Data was collected from a sample of festival attendees (n = 642) aged between 18 and 30 years. A descriptive analysis of the data was performed. Results Nearly three-quarters (73.4%) of participants reported that they had used illicit drugs in the past 12 months, most commonly cannabis (63.9%) and ecstasy (59.8%). A large proportion of participants believed ‘somewhat’ or ‘a lot’ that drug checking services could help users seek help to reduce harm (86.5%) and that drug checking services should be combined with harm reduction advice (84.9%). However, two thirds of the participants agreed ‘somewhat’ or ‘a lot’ that drug sellers may use this service as a quality control mechanism (68.6%). Approximately half (54.4%) indicated they would be highly likely and a third (32.7%) would be somewhat likely to utilise free drug checking services should they be available at music festivals. When asked whether the results of drug checking would influence their drug use behaviour, participants reported that they would not take substances shown to contain methamphetamine (65.1%), ketamine (57.5%) or para-methoxyamphetamine (PMA) (58.4%). Conclusion The majority of festival attendees aged 18–30 participating in this study reported a history of illicit drug use and were in favour of the provision of free drug checking at festivals. A considerable proportion reported that the results of drug checking would influence their drug use behaviour. The findings of this study can contribute to the debate regarding whether drug checking services could potentially play a major role in harm reduction and health promotion programming for young people attending festivals.

Abstract

International audience; Nonhomologous DNA end joining (NHEJ) is the major DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair pathway in mammals. Previously, we have described a small molecule inhibitor, SCR7, which can inhibit NHEJ in a Ligase IV-dependent manner. Administration of SCR7 within the cells resulted in the accumulation of DNA breaks, cell death, and inhibition of tumor growth in mice. In the present study, we report that parental SCR7, which is unstable, can be autocyclized into a stable form. Both parental SCR7 and cyclized SCR7 possess the same molecular weight (334.09) and molecular formula (C18H14N4OS), whereas its oxidized form, SCR7-pyrazine, possesses a different molecular formula (C18H12N4OS), molecular weight (332.07), and structure. While cyclized form of SCR7 showed robust inhibition of NHEJ in vitro, both forms exhibited efficient cytotoxicity. Cyclized and oxidized forms of SCR7 inhibited DNA end joining catalyzed by Ligase IV, whereas their impact was minimal on Ligase III, Ligase I, and T4 DNA Ligase-mediated joining. Importantly, both forms inhibited V(D)J recombination, although the effect was more pronounced for SCR7-cyclized. Both forms blocked NHEJ in a Ligase IV-dependent manner leading to the accumulation of DSBs within the cells. Although cytotoxicity due to SCR7-cyclized was Ligase IV specific, the pyrazine form exhibited nonspecific cytotoxicity at higher concentrations in Ligase IV-null cells. Finally, we demonstrate that both forms can potentiate the effect of radiation. Thus, we report that cyclized and oxidized forms of SCR7 can inhibit NHEJ in a Ligase IV-dependent manner, although SCR7-pyrazine is less specific to Ligase IV inside the cell.

Abstract

5,6-Bis(benzylideneamino)-2-mercaptopyrimidin-4-ol (SCR7) is a new anti cancer molecule having capability to selectively inhibit non-homologous end joining (NHEJ), one of the DNA double strand break (DSB) repair pathways inside the cells. In spite of the promising potential as an anticancer agent, hydrophobicity of SCR7 decreases its bioavailability. Herein the entrapment of SCR7 in Pluronic copolymer is reported. The size of the aggregates was determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) which yields an average diameter of 23 nm. SCR7 encapsulated micelles (ES) were also characterized by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Evaluation of its biological properties by using a variety of techniques, including Trypan blue, MTT and Live-dead cell assays, reveal that encapsulated SCR7 can induce cytotoxicity in cancer cell lines, being more effective in breast cancer cell line. Encapsulated SCR7 treatment resulted in accumulation of DNA breaks within the cells, resulting in cell cycle arrest at G1 phase and activation of apoptosis. More importantly, we found ≈ 5 fold increase in cell death, when encapsulated SCR7 was used in comparison with SCR7 alone.

The thymele at Epidauros is one of the most enigmatic buildings of the ancient Greek world. At the center of this book there lies a mystery. It is a mystery that has intrigued scholars for almost two centuries - a mystery that revolves around unique marks, sacred geometries, perplexing architecture, hidden passages, uncertain timelines, and lost rituals. It is a mystery that has yet to be solved. In this important book, an international, interdisciplinary team has compiled, synthesized, and speculated on a host of new (and old) clues that bring the puzzles circling the thymele at Epidauros into clearer focus. While the ancient ideas and intentions that motivated the construction of this remarkable building remain shrouded by time, the material evidence, the epigraphical record, and the literary testimonia hold numerous potential solutions. Through reexamination of these clues and their contexts, the authors hope to spark fresh debate regarding the form, the function, and the meaning of this unique and mysterious ancient structure.

Abstract

Curcumin in turmeric is responsible for most of the therapeutic effects exhibited by this natural product. Solubility of this dietary compound is very low in water at neutral pH and room temperature, which decreases its bioavailability. This in turn proves to be a major setback in making use of curcumin as a therapeutic agent against many diseases, including cancer. Alginate/Pluronic® tri-block copolymer P123 micelles has the potential for the formulation of curcumin. Inner core of the micelles effectively trap-free curcumin as evidenced by analytical data. The drug-encapsulated micelles were spherical in shape with diameters below 100 nm and found to be spherical particles with an average size of 50–100 nm, being suitable for drug delivery applications. Release profile of curcumin was investigated in aqueous PBS solution at pH 7.4 (37 ± 0.2 ºC). Fitting of drug release data in the Korsmeyer–Peppas model suggested sustained release with diffusion mechanism (0.5 < n). The in vitro cytotoxicity of the drug formulation was investigated with L 929 cancer cells. Polymer encapsulated curcumin showed comparable anticancer activity with free Curcumin.

The study covers the population includes 780 consumers from Tamil nadu, who are all using branded rice. The questionnaires were given to 900 consumers who are all using branded rice. Out of 900 consumers contacted, 780 questionnaires were received with required coverage and details. The participants completed the two sets of self-reported questionnaires, including Background characteristics and variables chosen for this study in order to measure the influence of branded milk are the Salience, performance, Imagery, Judgment, Feelings, attitude and Resonance. The collected data were computed and analysed using multiple regressions. The findings of the study were generalized as follows: Statistically significant differences were found in Brand rating by the different brand dimensions like Salience, Performance, Imagery, feelings, attitude and Resonance. Abstract

Although individual and group cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the standard treatment approach for hoarding disorder (HD), it requires trained mental health professionals with specialization in HD. There is a need to offer additional options and services due to the limited number of professionals with advanced training, combined with the high prevalence rate of individuals with HD. A structured support group led by trained facilitators or lay professionals using a facilitator's manual and participant workbook (Buried in Treasures or BiT), addresses this need and increases accessibility. Prior studies of BiT groups have shown decreased hoarding symptoms. Only one retrospective study compared BiT and CBT outcomes in a naturalistic setting and showed no difference. Thus, a well-powered randomized controlled trial is needed to directly compare these forms of treatment. This paper presents a non-inferiority controlled trial protocol that compares group CBT to group BiT. Three hundred participants with HD, 18years or older, are being recruited for a 16-week treatment study. Participants are randomly assigned to either the CBT or BiT group. The primary outcome is reduction in hoarding symptom severity. Secondary outcomes include reduction in other indices of hoarding symptomology, including functional impairment, physical clutter, cognition, and changes in neuropsychological functioning.

Abstract

Hoarding Disorder (HD) is associated with substantial distress, impairment, and individual and societal costs. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) tailored to HD is the best-studied form of treatment and can be led by mental health professionals or by non-professionals (peers) with specific training. No previous study has directly compared outcomes for therapist-led and peer-led groups, and none have examined the effectiveness of these groups in a real-world setting. We used retrospective data to compare psychologist-led CBT groups (G-CBT) to groups led by peer facilitators using the Buried in Treasures workbooks (G-BiT) in individuals who sought treatment for HD from the Mental Health Association of San Francisco. The primary outcome was change in Hoarding Severity Scale scores. Approximate costs per participant were also examined. Both G-CBT and G-BiT showed improvement consistent with previous reports (22% improvement overall). After controlling for baseline group characteristics, there were no significant differences in outcomes between G-CBT and G-BiT. For G-CBT, where additional outcome data were available, functional impairment and severity of hoarding symptoms improved to a similar degree as compared to previous G-CBT studies, while hoarding-related cognition improved to a lesser degree (also consistent with previous studies). G-BiT cost approximately $100 less per participant than did G-CBT.

Abstract

Background: As global initiatives increase patient access to surgical treatments, there remains a need to understand the adverse effects of surgery and define appropriate levels of perioperative care. Methods: We designed a prospective international 7-day cohort study of outcomes following elective adult inpatient surgery in 27 countries. The primary outcome was in-hospital complications. Secondary outcomes were death following a complication (failure to rescue) and death in hospital. Process measures were admission to critical care immediately after surgery or to treat a complication and duration of hospital stay. A single definition of critical care was used for all countries. Results: A total of 474 hospitals in 19 high-, 7 middle- and 1 low-income country were included in the primary analysis. Data included 44 814 patients with amedian hospital stay of 4 (range 2-7) days. A total of 7508 patients (16.8%) developed one or more postoperative complication and 207 died (0.5%). The overall mortality among patients who developed complications was 2.8%. Mortality following complications ranged from 2.4% for pulmonary embolism to 43.9% for cardiac arrest. A total of 4360 (9.7%) patients were admitted to a critical care unit as routine immediately after surgery, of whom 2198 (50.4%) developed a complication, with 105 (2.4%) deaths. A total of 1233 patients (16.4%) were admitted to a critical care unit to treat complications, with 119 (9.7%) deaths. Despite lower baseline risk, outcomes were similar in low- and middle-income compared with high-income countries. Conclusions: Poor patient outcomes are common after inpatient surgery. Global initiatives to increase access to surgical treatments should also address the need for safe perioperative care.

Abstract

This paper describes the process and challenges behind the design and development of a micro-gravity enabling aerial robot. The vehicle, designed to provide at minimum 4 seconds of micro-gravity at an accuracy of .001 g's, is designed with suggestions and constraints from both academia and industry as well a regulatory agency. The feasibility of the flight mission is validated using a simulation environment, where models obtained from system identification of existing hardware are implemented to increase the fidelity of the simulation. The current development of a physical test bed is described.
