Vascular insulin resistance, a major characteristic of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D), manifests with blunting of insulin-induced vasodilation. Although there is evidence that females are more whole body insulin sensitive than males in the healthy state, whether sex differences exist in vascular insulin sensitivity is unclear. Also uncertain is whether weight loss can reestablish vascular insulin sensitivity in T2D. The purpose of this investigation was to 1) establish if sex differences in vasodilatory responses to insulin exist in absence of disease, 2) determine whether female sex affords protection against the development of vascular insulin resistance with long-term overnutrition and obesity, and 3) examine if diet-induced weight loss can restore vascular insulin sensitivity in men and women with T2D. First, we show in healthy mice and humans that sex does not influence insulin-induced femoral artery dilation and insulin-stimulated leg blood flow, respectively. Second, we provide evidence that female mice are protected against impairments in insulin-induced dilation caused by overnutrition-induced obesity. Third, we show that men and women exhibit comparable levels of vascular insulin resistance when T2D develops but that diet-induced weight loss is effective at improving insulin-stimulated leg blood flow, particularly in women. Finally, we provide indirect evidence that these beneficial effects of weight loss may be mediated by a reduction in endothelin-1. In aggregate, the present data indicate that female sex confers protection against obesity-induced vascular insulin resistance and provide supportive evidence that, in women with T2D, vascular insulin resistance can be remediated with diet-induced weight loss.

We present a new iterative procedure for solving nonlinear equations with multiple roots with high efficiency. Starting from the arithmetic mean of Newton’s and Chebysev’s methods, we generate a two-step scheme using weight functions, resulting in a family of iterative methods that satisfies the Kung and Traub conjecture, yielding an optimal family for different choices of weight function. We have performed an in-depth analysis of the stability of the family members, in order to select those members with the highest stability for application in solving mathematical chemistry problems. We show the good characteristics of the selected methods by applying them on four relevant chemical problems.

Adropin is a peptide largely secreted by the liver and known to regulate energy homeostasis; however, it also exerts cardiovascular effects. Herein, we tested the hypothesis that low circulating levels of adropin in obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) contribute to arterial stiffening. In support of this hypothesis, we report that obesity and T2D are associated with reduced levels of adropin (in liver and plasma) and increased arterial stiffness in mice and humans. Establishing causation, we show that mesenteric arteries from adropin knockout mice are also stiffer, relative to arteries from wild-type counterparts, thus recapitulating the stiffening phenotype observed in T2D

To determine whether the local administration of insulin glargine compared with placebo in nondiabetic patients with venous ulcers (VUs) leads to increased wound healing.A randomized controlled trial using a split-plot design was performed in 36 adults with leg VUs25 cmAfter 7 d of treatment, the hemi-wounds treated with insulin glargine were significantly smaller, had less thermal asymmetry, more blood vessels, and more collagen content than the saline-treated side. Correlation between thermal asymmetry and the number of blood vessels was also found (rIn nondiabetic patients with chronic VUs, the topical administration of insulin glargine seems to be safe and promotes wound healing and tissue repair after 7 d of treatment.

Inflammation and vascular insulin resistance are hallmarks of type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, several potential mechanisms causing abnormal endothelial insulin signaling in T2D need further investigation. Evidence indicates that the activity of ADAM17 (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase-17) and the presence of insulin receptor (IR) in plasma are increased in subjects with T2D. Accordingly, we hypothesized that in T2D, increased ADAM17 activity sheds the IR ectodomain from endothelial cells and impairs insulin-induced vasodilation. We used small visceral arteries isolated from a cross-sectional study of subjects with and without T2D undergoing bariatric surgery, human cultured endothelial cells, and recombinant proteins to test our hypothesis. Here, we demonstrate that arteries from subjects with T2D had increased ADAM17 expression, reduced presence of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-3 (TIMP3), decreased extracellular IRα, and impaired insulin-induced vasodilation versus those from subjects without T2D. In vitro, active ADAM17 cleaved the ectodomain of the IRβ subunit. Endothelial cells with ADAM17 overexpression or exposed to the protein kinase-C activator, PMA, had increased ADAM17 activity, decreased IRα presence on the cell surface, and increased IR shedding. Moreover, pharmacological inhibition of ADAM17 with TAPI-0 rescued PMA-induced IR shedding and insulin-signaling impairments in endothelial cells and insulin-stimulated vasodilation in human arteries. In aggregate, our findings suggest that ADAM17-mediated shedding of IR from the endothelial surface impairs insulin-mediated vasodilation. Thus, we propose that inhibition of ADAM17 sheddase activity should be considered a strategy to restore vascular insulin sensitivity in T2D.

Given the challenges to the notion of objectivity posed by social psychological research on investigator effects, constructivist and critical epistemological perspectives, and the introduction of qualitative research methods in psychology, the investigators examined how leading methodologists understand the function of objectivity and subjectivity in psychological science. The aim of the study was to learn how contemporary methodologists view these issues so as to communicate converging perspectives to the field and inform methods education. A brief historical review of the concept of objectivity in psychology is presented to contexualize this examination. Eleven accomplished methodologists with expertise in a range of methods and epistemological perspectives were interviewed. Findings from a grounded theory analysis demonstrated that all the participants expressed concern about the belief that science is unaffected by scientists' perspectives, believing researchers and educators should problematize this perspective. Recommendations from participants included that science be viewed as a value-laden endeavor in which scientists systematically conduct research from multiple epistemological perspectives, and/or utilize diverse methods tailored to address their questions. Scientific procedures were detailed that could curtail dangers of either unchecked subjectivity or a false sense of objectivity. A functional analysis of these constructs, objectivity and subjectivity, suggested they both serve a similar scientific and an ethical purpose-to prevent the premature foreclosure of possible understanding because of the expectations of researchers. The mainstreaming of disclosures about the perspectives and positions of investigators, as well as their management, and the implementation of epistemological and methodological pluralism are encouraged to support this ethic. Impaired endothelial insulin signaling and consequent blunting of insulin-induced vasodilation is a feature of type 2 diabetes (T2D) that contributes to vascular disease and glycemic dysregulation. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying endothelial insulin resistance remain poorly known. Herein, we tested the hypothesis that endothelial insulin resistance in T2D is attributed to reduced expression of heat shock protein 72 (HSP72). HSP72 is a cytoprotective chaperone protein that can be upregulated with heating and is reported to promote insulin sensitivity in metabolically active tissues, in part via inhibition of JNK activity. Accordingly, we further hypothesized that, in individuals with T2D, 7 days of passive heat treatment via hot water immersion to waist level would improve leg blood flow responses to an oral glucose load (i.e., endogenous insulin stimulation) via induction of endothelial HSP72. In contrast, we found that: 1) endothelial insulin resistance in T2D mice and humans was not associated with reduced HSP72 in aortas and venous endothelial cells, respectively; 2) after passive heat treatment, improved leg blood flow responses to an oral glucose load did not parallel with increased endothelial HSP72; and 3) downregulation of HSP72 (via small-interfering RNA) or upregulation of HSP72 (via heating) in cultured endothelial cells did not impair or enhance insulin signaling, respectively, nor was JNK activity altered. Collectively, these findings do not support the hypothesis that reduced HSP72 is a key driver of endothelial insulin resistance in T2D but provide novel evidence that lower-body heating may be an effective strategy for improving leg blood flow responses to glucose ingestion-induced hyperinsulinemia.

Metabolic reprogramming is typical in cancerous cells and is required for proliferation and cellular survival. In addition, oncoproteins of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) are involved in this process. This study evaluated the relationship between glucose transporter I (GLUT1), lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA), and monocarboxylate transporter type 4 (MCT4) expression and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and invasive cervical carcinoma (ICC) with HR-HPV infection. The protein expression was evaluated in women with CIN I ( n=20), CIN II/III ( n=16), or ICC ( n=24) by immunohistochemistry. The protein expression was analyzed qualitatively by van Zummeren score and quantitatively by Image ProPlus 6 software. LDHA expression increases in HPV-16 infection. In the CIN I group, GLUT1 immunostaining has a 35% protein expression at the membrane level at more than two thirds of the epithelium, which increased by 21.25% more in CIN II/III in more than two thirds of the epithelium. While LDHA and MCT4 in CIN I mostly do not present immunostaining, or this was only limited to the basal stratum, this expression is increased in CIN II/III and ICC cases. The GLUT1, LDHA, and MCT4 expression increased in ICC. The overexpression in high-grade CIN with HR-HPV infection shows a higher risk for cervical carcinoma progression.

Consumption of diets high in fat, sugar, and salt (Western diet, WD) is associated with accelerated arterial stiffening, a major independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Women with obesity are more prone to develop arterial stiffening leading to more frequent and severe CVD compared with men. As tissue transglutaminase (TG2) has been implicated in vascular stiffening, our goal herein was to determine the efficacy of cystamine, a nonspecific TG2 inhibitor, at reducing vascular stiffness in female mice chronically fed a WD. Three experimental groups of female mice were created. One was fed regular chow diet (CD) for 43 wk starting at 4 wk of age. The second was fed a WD for the same 43 wk, whereas a third cohort was fed WD, but also received cystamine (216 mg/kg/day) in the drinking water during the last 8 wk on the diet (WD + C). All vascular stiffness parameters assessed, including aortic pulse wave velocity and the incremental modulus of elasticity of isolated femoral and mesenteric arteries, were significantly increased in WD- versus CD-fed mice, and reduced in WD + C versus WD-fed mice. These changes coincided with respectively augmented and diminished vascular wall collagen and F-actin content, with no associated effect in blood pressure. In cultured human vascular smooth muscle cells, cystamine reduced TG2 activity, F-actin:G-actin ratio, collagen compaction capacity, and cellular stiffness. We conclude that cystamine treatment represents an effective approach to reduce vascular stiffness in female mice in the setting of WD consumption, likely because of its TG2 inhibitory capacity. NEW & NOTEWORTHY This study evaluates the novel role of transglutaminase 2 (TG2) inhibition to directly treat vascular stiffness. Our data demonstrate that cystamine, a nonspecific TG2 inhibitor, improves vascular stiffness induced by a diet rich in fat, fructose, and salt. This research suggests that TG2 inhibition might bear therapeutic potential to reduce the disproportionate burden of cardiovascular disease in females in conditions of chronic overnutrition.

A load flow study referred to as a power flow study is a numerical analysis of the electricity that flows through any electrical power system. For instance, if a transmission line needs to be taken out of service for maintenance, load flow studies allow us to assess whether the remaining line can carry the load without exceeding its rated capacity. So, we need to understand about the voltage level and voltage phase angle on each bus under steady-state conditions to keep the bus voltage within a specific range. In this paper, our goal is to present a higher order efficient iterative method to carry out a power flow study to determine the voltages (magnitude and angle) for a specific load, generation and network conditions. We introduce a new seventh-order three-step iterative scheme for obtaining approximate solution of nonlinear systems of equations. We attain the seventh-order convergence by using four function evaluations which makes it worthy of interest. Moreover, we show its applicability to the electrical power system for calculating voltages and phase angles. By calculating the bus angle and voltage level, we conclude that the performance of the power system is assessed in a more efficient manner using the new scheme. In addition, dynamical planes of the methods applied on nonlinear systems of equations show global convergence.

Plant-soil feedbacks (PSF) play a substantial role in determining plant performance in native and foreign habitats. Yet, PSF strength may be altered by climatic parameters, creating synergies. Here, we assess performance of alpine grassland species in their native and in foreign soils in an experiment including different climates.Using soil and seeds sampled from six alpine grassland sites spreading in a gradient from Northern Africa to Northern Europe, we compared plant performance in home soil and in five foreign soils, as well as home and foreign climates (simulated temperature and photoperiod in growth chambers).We found that despite a high variability in plant performance between sites, plants generally performed better in their home soil and home climate, than in foreign soil or in foreign climate. However, an interaction between soil and climate effect caused this better performance in home soil to occur only when in foreign climate. Similarly, performance improved in home climate only when plants were also placed in foreign soil.Synthesis: In contrast to predictions from the literature, no benefit from growing in foreign soils are indicated. At least on the short term, climate change alone is not suggested to affect native grassland plant performance. However, when introduced to a habitat with a similar climate to their native habitat, plants may perform as well as in their native range, but when introduced both to a new soil and climate, plants will do poorly. This finding sheds light on the interactive effect of climate and soil origin, as well as the possible success of plant introductions under a changing climate.

Networked microgrids have many advantages for consumers and small energy producers, including higher reliability than non-networked microgrids. However, energy transaction, network interconnection, the intermittent nature of renewable sources, and other problems lead to challenges in the practical implementation of networked microgrids. Despite its favorable use of space, a floating PV system presents challenges that differ from those associated with its land-based counterparts because it is prone to the motion of the surface of the water, resulting in an unpredictable power output. This work presents a hierarchical energy management system (EMS) to address these issues. In level 1 of the EMS, which is for the overall management thereof, a blockchain model is used to manage transactions among microgrids. A grid synchronization algorithm is implemented in level 2 of the EMS, which manages the interconnection of microgrids. Level 2 is activated when an energy transaction between microgrids is needed. An on-line recurrent neural network (RNN)-based controller for an energy storage system (ESS), which is designed specifically to mitigate the problem caused by a floating PV platform, is deployed in level 3 as a local controller. The results of a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation demonstrate that the EMS can properly coordinate the levels in the hierarchical scheme to interconnect and provide power support between the microgrids. Real-time simulation results show that the ESS controller responds well, proving the viability of the hardware controller. According to these findings, the hierarchical EMS that is proposed in this work can solve the considered problems.

Cryptococcus neoformans is a human multidrug-resistant yeast with high mortality rates in immunocompromised patients. Recently, the synthetic peptide Mo-CBP3-PepII emerged as a potent anticryptococcal molecule with an MIC50 at low concentration. Here, the mechanisms of action of Mo-CBP3-PepII were deeply analyzed to provide new information about how it led C. neoformans cells to death. Light and fluorescence microscopies, analysis of enzymatic activities, and proteomic analysis were employed to understand the effect of Mo-CBP3-PepII on C. neoformans cells. Light and fluorescence microscopies revealed Mo-CBP3-PepII induced the accumulation of anion superoxide and hydrogen peroxide in C. neoformans cells. In addition to a reduction in the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and catalase (CAT) in the cells treated with Mo-CBP3-PepII. In the presence of Ascorbic acid (AsA), no ROS were detected and Mo-CBP3-PepII lost the inhibitory activity against C. neoformans. Yet, Mo-CBP3-PepII inhibited the activity of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), ergosterol biosynthesis, and induced the decoupling of cytochrome c from the mitochondrial membrane. Proteomic analysis revealed a reduction in the abundance of proteins related to energetic metabolism, DNA and RNA metabolism, pathogenicity, protein metabolism, cytoskeleton, and cell wall organization and division. Our findings indicated that Mo-CBP3-PepII might have multiple mechanisms of action against C. neoformans cells, mitigating the development of resistance and thus being a potent molecule to be employed in the production of new drugs against C. neoformans infections.

Vector beams display varying polarisation over planes transversal to their direction of propagation. The variation of polarisation implies that the electric field cannot be expressed as a product of a spatial mode and its polarisation. This non-separability has been analysed for particular vector beams in terms of non--quantum entanglement between the spatial and the polarisation-degrees of freedom, and equivalently, with respect to the degree of polarisation of light. Here we demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that Mathieu-Gauss vector modes violate a Bell-like inequality known as the Clauser-Horn-Shimony-Holt-Bell (CHSH-Bell) inequality. Climate change and associated environmental alterations affect plant communities, potentially decoupling links between plants and their associated soil microbial communities. This may in turn affect processes like litter decomposition, an important function that controls nutrient and carbon cycling as well as many other ecosystem processes. Microbial decomposers have been proposed to specialize, being able to easier decompose litter from its ‘home’ community than litter from other communities, in what is termed the home field advantage (HFA) hypothesis. We report a litter decomposition experiment including four alpine meadow communities spread along a geographical gradient that ranged from the Atlas in Morocco to the Iberian Peninsula to the Swiss Alps. We tested whether litter decomposition rate would differ depending on litter and soil origin, expecting interactions between litter and soil microbial communities to be at the core of responses. We expected to find HFA in all four alpine communities. HFA ranged from very negative to neutral to positive along our geographical gradient, in a variation that could be attributed to the interaction of microbial communities with soil and plant traits, and linked to the relative abundance of microbial groups performing specific functions. Litter decomposition depended on litter quality and on the fungal community, which seemed adapted to deal with poor-quality, recalcitrant litter, leading to HFA. Climate plays a role as well, indirectly through plant community composition. Phyllosphere communities competed with soil communities when in interaction, a fact that may have blurred results of some previous HFA experiments. In summary, there is a clear HFA in systems with low-quality litter that requires a specialised fungal community to maximize decomposition. Cryptococcus neoformans is a multidrug-resistant human pathogenic yeast responsible for infections in immunocompromised patients. Here, Itraconazole (ITR), a commercial antifungal drug with low effectiveness against C. neoformans, was combined with different synthetic peptides Mo-CBP3-PepII, RcAlb-PepII, RcAlb-PepIII, PepGAT, and PepKAA. The mechanisms of action responsible for the synergistic effect were evaluated for the best combinations by Fluorescence Microscopy (FM). The synthetic peptides enhanced the activity of ITR by 10-fold against C. neoformans. Our results demonstrated that the combinations could induce pore formation in the membrane and overaccumulation of ROS on C. neoformans cells. Our findings indicate that our peptides successfully potentialize the activity of ITR by reducing it by 10-fold to reach antifungal activity against C. neoformans. Therefore, synthetic peptides are potential molecules to act as co-adjuvant agents in treating Cryptococcal infections.

Biometria por meio das impressões digitais é a forma mais aceita e difundida de distinguir pessoas no mundo atual, devido aos eficientes e acessíveis equipamentos disponíveis (e.g., em celulares, caixas eletrônicos e trancas eletrônicas). Com base neste contexto e a necessidade do governo de utilizar os dados coletados dos cidadãos para diferenciá-los e identificá-los para os mais diversos objetivos, este trabalho relata a implementação de um sistema de identificação de digitais utilizando conceitos de computação concorrente, microsserviços e big data. O sistema consegue cadastrar um indivíduo com dez capturas de seus 10 dedos em um tempo médio de 25,8 segundos, contando com validação de qualidade de cada imagem, extração de características e armazenamento em diferentes bases de dados. O sistema consegue chegar próximo a 90% de assertividade na identificação (1:N) em menos de 5s em um universo de 10 mil indivíduos, também alcançando 84% de acurácia na verificação (1:1). Este trabalho encontra-se em evolução e demonstra resultados promissores com margem para melhorias.

To assess coverage and inequalities in maternal and child health interventions among Haitians, Haitian migrants in the Dominican Republic and Dominicans.Cross-sectional study using data from nationally representative surveys carried out in Haiti in 2012 and in the Dominican Republic in 2014. Nine indicators were compared: demand for family planning satisfied with modern methods, antenatal care, delivery care (skilled birth attendance), child vaccination (BCG, measles and DPT3), child case management (oral rehydration salts for diarrhea and careseeking for suspected pneumonia), and the composite coverage index. Wealth was measured through an asset-based index, divided into tertiles, and place of residence (urban or rural) was established according to the country definition.Haitians showed the lowest coverage for demand for family planning satisfied with modern methods (44.2%), antenatal care (65.3%), skilled birth attendance (39.5%) and careseeking for suspected pneumonia (37.9%), and the highest for oral rehydration salts for diarrhea (52.9%), whereas Haitian migrants had the lowest coverage in DPT3 (44.1%) and oral rehydration salts for diarrhea (38%) and the highest in careseeking for suspected pneumonia (80.7%). Dominicans presented the highest coverage for most indicators, except oral rehydration salts for diarrhea and careseeking for suspected pneumonia. The composite coverage index was 79.2% for Dominicans, 69.0% for Haitian migrants, and 52.6% for Haitians. Socioeconomic inequalities generally had pro-rich and pro-urban pattern in all analyzed groups.Haitian migrants presented higher coverage than Haitians, but lower than Dominicans. Both countries should plan actions and policies to increase coverage and address inequalities of maternal health interventions.Avaliar cobertura e desigualdades nas intervenções em saúde materno-infantil entre os haitianos, migrantes haitianos na República Dominicana e dominicanos.Estudo transversal utilizando dados de pesquisas representativas nacionalmente realizadas no Haiti em 2012, e na República Dominicana em 2014. Nove indicadores foram comparados: demanda por planejamento familiar atendida com métodos modernos, atendimento pré-natal, atendimento ao parto (presença de profissional qualificado no parto), vacinação de crianças (BCG, sarampo e DPT3), atendimento de crianças (sais de reidratação oral para diarreia e demanda por assistência por suspeita de pneumonia) e índice composto de cobertura. A riqueza foi medida por meio de índice baseado em recursos, dividido em tercis, e o local de residência (urbano ou rural) foi estabelecido segundo a definição dos países.Os haitianos apresentaram a menor cobertura de demanda por planejamento familiar atendida com métodos modernos (44,2%), atendimento pré-natal (65,3%), presença de profissional qualificado no parto (39,5%) e de atendimento por suspeita de pneumonia (37,9%), e a mais alta para sais de reidratação oral na diarreia (52,9%), enquanto os migrantes haitianos tiveram a menor cobertura de DPT3 (44,1%) e sais de reidratação oral para diarreia (38%), e a mais alta na assistência por suspeita de pneumonia (80,7%). Os dominicanos apresentaram a cobertura mais alta para a maioria dos indicadores, exceto para sais de reidratação oral para diarreia e demanda por assistência por suspeita de pneumonia. O índice composto de cobertura foi 79,2% para dominicanos, 69,0% para migrantes haitianos e 52,6% para os haitianos. De forma geral, as desigualdades socioeconômicas apresentaram padrão pró-riqueza e pró-urbano em todos os grupos analisados.Os migrantes haitianos apresentaram maior cobertura que os haitianos, mas coberturas inferiores aos dominicanos. Ambos os países devem planejar ações e políticas para aumentar a cobertura e abordar as desigualdades nas intervenções em saúde materna.

Facilitation is a global phenomenon that occurs when one species promotes the growth, survival, or reproduction of another species, mostly in stressful environments. However, the importance of facilitation by shrubs in maintaining plant community diversity is not well evaluated in the Himalayas, especially for the richness and conservation of medicinal and human-valued species. Therefore, we aimed to explore the facilitative role of a dwarf shrub species, Berberis angulosa, in maintaining plant composition and richness of human-valued species in the Langtang valley of Nepal's Himalayas. We censused plant species in open patches and beneath Berberis during monsoon and post-monsoon (dry) seasons at three elevations. Total species richness and richness of human-valued species were significantly higher inside the Berberis canopy than in gaps; the former being 39% and the latter 46% greater under shrubs than in open sites. Facilitation by Berberis shrubs promoted plant community diversity irrespective of season and elevation; however, higher differences in mean species richness for both total plant species and human-valued species during the dry season and at high elevation indicated increased facilitation intensity under more stressful conditions. The facilitative effect of Berberis shrubs increased, combining both seasons, overall plant diversity by 19% (total=105), and human-valued species by 16% (total=56). Our results show the importance of facilitation by nurse shrubs in structuring plant communities and protecting medicinal and socio-ecologically important plants, thus enriching ecosystem services in the Himalayas. These results suggest nurse plant species should be incorporated into conservation policies and management strategies for effective biodiversity conservation and sustainability, especially in the face of climate change.

[EN] Research interest in iterative multipoint schemes to solve nonlinear problems has increased recently because of the drawbacks of point-to-point methods, which need high-order derivatives to increase the order of convergence. However, this order is not the only key element to classify the iterative schemes. We aim to design new multipoint fixed point classes without memory, that improve or bring together the existing ones in different areas such as computational efficiency, stability and also convergence order. In this manuscript, we present a family of parametric iterative methods, whose order of convergence is four, that has been designed by using composition and weight function techniques. A qualitative analysis is made, based on complex discrete dynamics, to select those elements of the class with best stability properties on low-degree polynomials. This stable behavior is directly related with the simplicity of the fractals defined by the basins of attraction. In the opposite, particular methods with unstable performance present high-complexity in the fractals of their basins. Plant recruitment interactions (i.e., what recruits under what) shape the composition, diversity, and structure of plant communities. Despite the huge body of knowledge on the mechanisms underlying recruitment interactions among species, we still know little about the structure of the recruitment networks emerging in ecological communities. Modeling and analyzing the community-level structure of plant recruitment interactions as a complex network can provide relevant information on ecological and evolutionary processes acting both at the species and ecosystem levels. We report a data set containing 143 plant recruitment networks in 23 countries across five continents, including temperate and tropical ecosystems. Each network identifies the species under which another species recruits. All networks report the number of recruits (i.e., individuals) per species. The data set includes >850,000 recruiting individuals involved in 118,411 paired interactions among 3318 vascular plant species across the globe. The cover of canopy species and open ground is also provided. Three sampling protocols were used: (1) The Recruitment Network (RN) protocol (106 networks) focuses on interactions among established plants (“canopy species”) and plants in their early stages of recruitment (“recruit species”). A series of plots was delimited within a locality, and all the individuals recruiting and their canopy species were identified; (2) The paired Canopy-Open (pCO) protocol (26 networks) consists in locating a potential canopy plant and identifying recruiting individuals under the canopy and in a nearby open space of the same area; (3) The Georeferenced plot (GP) protocol (11 networks) consists in using information from georeferenced individual plants in large plots to infer canopy-recruit interactions. Some networks incorporate data for both herbs and woody species, whereas others focus exclusively on woody species. The location of each study site, geographical coordinates, country, locality, responsible author, sampling dates, sampling method, and life habits of both canopy and recruit species are provided. This database will allow researchers to test ecological, biogeographical, and evolutionary hypotheses related to plant recruitment interactions. The glycocalyx is a polysaccharide structure that protrudes from the body of a cell. It is primarily conformed of glycoproteins and proteoglycans, which provide communication, electrostatic charge, ionic buffering, permeability, and mechanosensation-mechanotransduction capabilities to cells. In blood vessels, the endothelial glycocalyx that projects into the vascular lumen separates the vascular wall from the circulating blood. Such a physical location allows a number of its components, including sialic acid, glypican-1, heparan sulfate, and hyaluronan, to participate in the mechanosensation-mechanotransduction of blood flow-dependent shear stress, which results in the synthesis of nitric oxide and flow-mediated vasodilation. The endothelial glycocalyx also participates in the regulation of vascular permeability and the modulation of inflammatory responses, including the processes of leukocyte rolling and extravasation. Its structural architecture and negative charge work to prevent macromolecules greater than approximately 70 kDa and cationic molecules from binding and flowing out of the vasculature. This also prevents the extravasation of pathogens such as bacteria and virus, as well as that of tumor cells. Due to its constant exposure to shear and circulating enzymes such as neuraminidase, heparanase, hyaluronidase, and matrix metalloproteinases, the endothelial glycocalyx is in a continuous process of degradation and renovation. A balance favoring degradation is associated with a variety of pathologies including atherosclerosis, hypertension, vascular aging, metastatic cancer, and diabetic vasculopathies. Consequently, ongoing research efforts are focused on deciphering the mechanisms that promote glycocalyx degradation or limit its syntheses, as well as on therapeutic approaches to improve glycocalyx integrity with the goal of reducing vascular disease. © 2022 American Physiological Society. The purpose of this study is to report epidemiological and clinical data of the patients that were admitted with spinal gunshot injuries.This was retrospective study and observational study. Patients who had a spinal injury secondary to a gunshot wound that was admitted to our hospital (level III trauma center) from July 2018 through July 2020 were included in the study. Demographic and clinical data including age, gender, civil status, occupation, level of injury (cervical, thoracic, or lumbar), degree of neurological impairment at admission, associated injuries, treatment established, length of hospital stay, and mortality rate were recorded.A total of 55 patients were included in the study, of which 50 patients (90.9%) were men and five female patients (9.09%). The average age was 30.2 years. Three patients died during hospitalization representing a mortality rate of 5.45%.Spinal gunshot injuries are associated with significant sequelae, requiring long and costly treatments. This study obtained one of the highest incidences of gunshot injuries to the spine reported in the literature.El propósito de este estudio es reportar datos epidemiológicos y clínicos de los pacientes que ingresaron con heridas por arma de fuego en columna.Estudio retrospectivo y observacional. Se incluyeron pacientes que presentaban una lesión medular a secundaria a una herida por arma de fuego que ingresaron en nuestro hospital (centro de trauma de nivel III) desde julio de 2018 hasta julio de 2020. Se registraron datos demográficos y clínicos que incluían edad, sexo, estado civil, ocupación, grado de lesión (cervical, torácica o lumbar), grado de deterioro neurológico al ingreso, lesiones asociadas, tratamiento establecido, duración de la estancia hospitalaria y tasa de mortalidad.Se incluyeron en el estudio un total de 55 pacientes, de los cuales 50 pacientes (90,9%) eran hombres y 5 mujeres (9,09%). La edad media fue de 30,2 años. Tres pacientes fallecieron durante la hospitalización lo que representa una tasa de mortalidad del 5,45%.Las lesiones por arma de fuego en la columna están asociadas con secuelas importantes, que requieren tratamientos largos y costosos. Este estudio obtuvo una de las incidencias más altas de heridas por arma de fuego en la columna vertebral reportadas en la literatura.

Aim of study: Intensive agriculture impacts physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of soil; therefore, the addition of organic matter (OM) to soil can have significant implications for crop production. This study investigated the impact of three crop management systems on tomato production and soil microbial communities in intensive greenhouse farming. Area of study: Province of Almería (Spain). Material and methods: The three crop management systems included: (1) conventional management, using synthetic chemical fertilizers without OM application (CM); (2) conventional management, using synthetic chemical fertilizers with at least one OM application in the last three years (CMOM); and (3) fully organic management, featuring yearly OM applications and no use of synthetic chemical fertilizers (ORG). Main results: Compared to CM soils, OM addition in CMOM and ORG led to higher soil NO3- and NH4+ content, which in turn increased nitrogen (N) availability, leading to an increase in soil respiration. The addition of OM also altered the composition of prokaryotic and fungal soil communities. Besides, the addition of OM reduced the presence and abundance of potential fungal pathogenic organisms, like Sclerotinia sp. and Plectosphaerella cucumerina. OM addition to conventionally managed greenhouses (CMOM) led to higher crop yields compared to CM greenhouses, resulting in an overall increase of 880 g m-2. Production under fully organic management (ORG) was lowest, possibly due to the nutrient and pest management practices used. Research highlights: Our data show the importance of organic matter management in shaping microbial communities in intensive greenhouse systems, which can be a key factor in developing a more sustainable agriculture to feed a growing human population.

How the relationship between species richness and productivity changes along environmental gradients remains poorly understood. We examined the context dependency of complementarity processes underpinning this relationship (biotic feedbacks, resource partitioning and facilitation) using the framework of Grime's (1973) humped‐back model. We considered several scenarios of variation in competition and facilitation along environmental gradients, either monotonic with the most common or intense facilitation at the most abiotically severe end of gradients or nonlinear with the strongest facilitation at intermediate positions along gradients. How competition shifts to facilitation along environmental gradients is a key for determining where the effect of species richness on productivity occurs. Based on the literature, the original Stress Gradient Hypothesis would likely predict that complementarity effects should be the greatest, or the most important, in the most abiotically stressful environments. Alternatively, both the ‘collapse of facilitation’ and the ‘shift back to competition’ scenarios predict that the highest overall complementary effects on productivity, not biomass, would most likely occur at intermediate positions along environmental stress gradients, but this might vary depending on the source of stress. This latter prediction is consistent with a great deal of literature on natural gradients of productivity and species richness. Synthesis. Our predictions illustrate the importance of better understanding the context dependency of complementarity processes and the key role of facilitation along environmental gradients to better focus conservation efforts where ecosystem functioning is more likely to be negatively affected by species loss, in particular in species‐rich communities.

Cushion plants are specialized keystone species of alpine environments that can have a positive effect on ecosystem structure and function. However, we know relatively little about how cushion plants regulate the diversity and composition of soil microbial communities, major drivers of soil processes and ecosystem functioning. Identifying what factors drive the diversity and composition of soil microbial communities in high-elevation ecosystems is also fundamental to predict how global changes will affect their conservation and the services and functions they provide. Thus, we sampled four sites along the southern Andes following the vegetation belt of Azorella cushion species. The field sites spread along a latitudinal gradient and had contrasting levels of aridity, UV-B radiation, mean temperature and soil properties. Overall, Azorella, as well as aridity and UV-B radiation, were the major drivers of the distribution, composition and diversity of soil microbial communities in the studied ecosystems of the Chilean Andes. UV-B radiation affected particularly soil fungi, while soil properties such as pH, total C and N content, essential predictors of microbial diversity globally, had a much lower effect on the composition of soil microbial communities. Understanding the factors driving the structure and composition of microbial communities, particularly the role of cushion plants and the feedbacks between plant, climate and soil is of uttermost importance for the preservation of the functionality of high-elevation ecosystems threatened by climate change.

Research on education inequalities has long established the relationship between the social composition of schools and achievement levels. However, the empirical study of the social processes in choosing schools and their potential effects on achievement inequalities has often been neglected. This article investigates the extent to which such social processes, related to parents’ educational preferences and expectations, influence the development of students’ achievement throughout their schooling career, as a channel of transmission of social inequality. Using longitudinal census data from Chile, which allows us to observe students’ achievements between the 4th and 10th grades, we find support for the claim that the development of achievement inequalities operate partly through well-off parents’ educational preferences and expectations. Moreover, these preferences and beliefs explain most of the social composition effect of schools on achievement inequalities. We conclude that choice processes should be considered as an integral part of theories aimed to explain achievement inequalities as a dynamic process.

Objectives: Previous studies have estimated the 30-day prevalence of alcohol use to be approximately 21% among youth in Brazil, despite the legal drinking age of 18 years. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of underage drinking and its associated factors among adolescents in Brazil. Methods: The 3rd National Survey on Drug Use by the Brazilian Population (III Levantamento Nacional sobre o Uso de Drogas pela População Brasileira) is a nationwide, multi-stage, probability-sample household survey. Herein, youth between the ages of 12-17 years were included. Lifetime and 12-month alcohol use prevalence were estimated. Factors associated with 12-month alcohol use were evaluated through multivariate analysis considering survey weights and design. Results: Overall, 628 youth were interviewed. Estimated lifetime and 12-month alcohol use were 34.3% (standard error [SE] = 1.9) and 22.2% (SE = 1.7), respectively. Factors associated with 12-month drinking were: other/no religion vs. Christianity; living in rural vs. urban areas; self-reported diagnosis of depression vs. no self-reported depression; lifetime tobacco use vs. no history of tobacco use; and any illicit drug use vs. no history of illicit drug use. Conclusion: Considering that alcohol use is a major risk factor for early death among Brazilian youth, our findings highlight the importance of preventative measures to reduce underage drinking.

Facial expression facilitates the understanding of the individual's identity, being essential for communication and interaction in modern society. When this expression is limited, in addition to the functional consequences of the organism, it also has psychological and social consequences. The ARTHUR project developed a virtual surgery solution, applied to the bone and dental structure, capable of predicting the real impact on the patient's face mask. The solution is based on cloud and allows the clinical body to perform the virtual surgical planning, using cutting guides and plates or surgical guide lines, in a parameterized anatomical model of the head achieved through the fusion of three exams: TAC (CBCT), Intraoral Scan and 3D Stereo Photogrammetry. Above all, it is intended that, based on this planning and thanks to the parameterized anatomical model, it is possible to realistically forecast and represent the impact of the surgical intervention on the patient's face mask. This tool acts in different situations that require facial reconstruction, however this project focuses specifically on two types of use cases: bone congenital disfigurement and acquired disfiguration such as oral cancer with bone attainment. It is intended to be an intuitive and user friendly tool, which allows its use by less specialized technicians who can demonstrate the final results directly to the patient in the office. The ARTHUR project consists of a platform that allows the virtual performance of maxillofacial surgeries, offering, in a photorealistic concept, the possibility for the patient to have an idea of the surgical changes before they are performed on their face. For this, the system brings together several image formats, dicoms and objs that, after loading, will generate the bone volume, soft tissues and hard tissues. The system also incorporates the patient's stereophotogrammetry, in addition to their data and clinical history. After loading and inserting data, the clinician can virtually perform the surgical operation and present the final result to the patient, generating a new facial surface that contemplates the changes made in the bone and tissues of the maxillary area. This tool acts in different situations that require facial reconstruction, however this project focuses specifically on two types of use cases: bone congenital disfigurement and acquired disfiguration such as oral cancer with bone attainment. Being developed a cloud based solution, with mobile support, the tool aims to reduce the decision time window of patient. Because the current simulations are not realistic or, if realistic, need time due to the need of building plaster models, patient rates on decision, rely on a long time window (1,2 months), because they don’t identify themselves with the presented surgical outcome. On the other hand, this planning was performed time based on average estimated values of the position of the maxilla and mandible. The team was based on averages of the facial measurements of the population, without specifying racial variability, so the proposed solution was not adjusted to the real individual physiognomic needs. in publication

Pyometra is one of the most common diseases in adult female dogs, characterized by a suppurative bacterial infection of the uterus with accumulation of inflammatory exudate and a variety of local and systemic clinical manifestations. This study aimed to identify the bacteria within the uterine content and vaginal canal of bitches with pyometra and evaluate their antimicrobial susceptibility and production of virulence factors. Uterine and vaginal content were collected with sterile swabs from 30 bitches diagnosed with pyometra. Bacteria were identified and assessed for their antimicrobial susceptibility and production of virulence factors, including biofilms, siderophores, proteases and hemolysins, both in planktonic and biofilm forms. A total of 82 bacterial isolates (35 uterus, 47 vagina), belonging to 21 species, were identified, with Escherichia coli as the most prevalent species (32/82, 39%). As for susceptibility, 39/79 (49.4%) isolates were resistant to one or more drugs, with resistance proportion among Gram-positive bacteria (87.5%) higher (p .05) than that observed for Gram-negative bacteria (32.7%). Four coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species were resistant to methicillin. Regarding virulence, the isolates had low production of biofilms, siderophores, proteases and hemolysins, suggesting that the occurrence of pyometra might be more associated with host-related factors than bacterial virulence.

Background/aim The E6 genotypic variants of HPV 16 identified in lesions of women with cervical cancer (CC) in Southern of Mexico include the E-G350, AAa, AAc, E-C188/G350, and E-A176/G350, transcriptomic analysis cells transfected with those variants showed to induce differential expression of the host genes involved in the development of CC, the aim of this work was to understand how the over-expression of the E6 oncoprotein and its variants can induce molecular mechanisms that lead to more aggressive HPV 16 phenotypes in cervical cancer and which proteins could be associated with the process. Materials and methods Total extracts from C33A, C33A mock, C33A AAa, C33A E-C188/G350, C33A E-A176/G350, and C33A E-prototype cells were analyzed using 2D electrophoresis, PDQuest software and mass spectrometry, validation of results was performed through qPCR. Results Statistically significant differential expression of 122 spots was detected, 12 of the identified proteins were associated with metabolism and metabolic programming. Out of these CCT8, ENO and ALDH1A were further validated. Conclusion CCT8 and ALDH1A were found to be over-expressed in C33A AAa and C33A E-A176/G350, compared to the E prototype. Both proteins could be associated with a most aggressive phenotype due to their relationship with metabolism, protein folding and stemness, mechanisms associated to E6 that could be useful in the design of new therapies.

There is convincing evidence that Americans have high, stable levels of knowledge about the Supreme Court. Yet, this conclusion masks variance in political knowledge associated with ethnicity. Using data from surveys of Latinos and non-Latinos fielded before and after the Supreme Court’s rulings in Arizona v. United States and National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius, we find Latinos know less about the Court than other Americans. However, Latinos’ knowledge of the Court increased significantly between the surveys, while others’ Supreme Court knowledge did not. We discuss the implications of this result for the Supreme Court’s legitimacy and civic education policy.

1. Drylands are among the most threatened ecosystems in the world because of the effects of global change and because they are not particularly resilient. Regeneration after disturbance is quite slow and secondary succession can be delayed to the point of nearly stop. This is exacerbated when the community is strongly dominated by a single species able to quickly respond after disturbance. One example of such monospecific dominance is the colonization of abandoned fields in SE Spain by an early successional and native tussock grass, Lygeum spartum, that seems to halt succession. 2. Here we tested the competitive ability of Lygeum against Salsola oppositifolia, a shrub species that can be found interspersed with Lygeum in mid‐successional stages, and assessed how plant–soil interactions mediate the outcome of plant– plant competition. To do so, we sowed seeds and grew plants of Lygeum and Salsola in either intra‐ or interspecific competition under controlled conditions using sterile field soils inoculated with either live (i.e., with micro‐organisms) or sterile soil extracts from the understories of either Lygeum or Salsola. Soil nutrient content, seed germination rate, and shoot mass growth were determined after 5 months, and soil bacterial communities were characterized by sequencing. 3. Lygeum soil micro‐organisms and soil properties, such as the high content of N and organic matter, enhanced seed germination rate of Lygeum individuals. By contrast, Salsola adults outperformed Lygeum when growing in interspecific competition. 4. Synthesis. The enhanced competitive ability of Lygeum, which was mediated by soil micro‐organisms, may lead to complete dominance of Lygeum in the plant community right after abandonment of agricultural fields. However, when the plant community is already developed, Lygeum would be unable to enforce such dominance. Insulin resistance in the vasculature is a characteristic feature of obesity and contributes to the pathogenesis of vascular dysfunction and disease. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying obesity-associated vascular insulin resistance and dysfunction remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that TRAF3IP2 (TRAF3 interacting protein 2), a proinflammatory adaptor molecule known to activate pathological stress pathways and implicated in cardiovascular diseases, plays a causal role in obesity-associated vascular insulin resistance and dysfunction. We tested this hypothesis by employing genetic-manipulation in endothelial cells in vitro, in isolated arteries ex vivo, and diet-induced obesity in a mouse model of TRAF3IP2 ablation in vivo. We show that ectopic expression of TRAF3IP2 blunts insulin signaling in endothelial cells and diminishes endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation in isolated aortic rings. Further, 16 weeks of high fat/high sucrose feeding impaired glucose tolerance, aortic insulin-induced vasorelaxation, and hindlimb postocclusive reactive hyperemia, while increasing blood pressure and arterial stiffness in wild-type male mice. Notably, TRAF3IP2 ablation protected mice from such high fat/high sucrose feeding-induced metabolic and vascular defects. Interestingly, wild-type female mice expressed markedly reduced levels of TRAF3IP2 mRNA independent of diet and were protected against high fat/high sucrose diet-induced vascular dysfunction. These data indicate that TRAF3IP2 plays a causal role in vascular insulin resistance and dysfunction. Specifically, the present findings highlight a sexual dimorphic role of TRAF3IP2 in vascular control and identify it as a promising therapeutic target in vasculometabolic derangements associated with obesity, particularly in males.

Edoxaban is used for venous thromboembolism (VTE) treatment. Real-life data are lacking about its use in long-term therapy. We aimed to assess the efficacy and the safety of edoxaban for long-term VTE treatment in a real-life setting. Patients with VTE included in the Registro Informatizado Enfermedad TromboEmbólica (RIETE) registry, receiving edoxaban 60 or 30 mg daily were prospectively followed up to validate the benefit of using different dosages. The main outcome was the composite of VTE recurrences or major bleeding in patients with or without criteria for dose reduction. Multivariable analysis to identify predictors for the composite outcome was performed. From October 2015 to November 2019, 562 patients received edoxaban for long-term therapy. Most (94%) of the 416 patients not meeting criteria for dose reduction received 60 mg daily, and 92 patients meeting criteria (63%) received 30 mg daily. During treatment, two patients developed recurrent VTE, six had major bleeding and nine died (2 from fatal bleeding). Among patients not meeting criteria for dose reduction, those receiving 30 mg daily had a higher rate of the composite event (hazard ratio (HR) 8.37; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.12–42.4) and a significant higher mortality rate (HR 31.1; 95% CI 4.63–262) than those receiving 60 mg. Among patients meeting criteria for dose reduction, those receiving 60 mg daily had no events, and a nonsignificantly higher mortality rate (HR 5.04; 95% CI 0.54–133) than those receiving 30 mg daily. In conclusion, edoxaban seems to be effective and safe for long-term VTE treatment in real life. Criteria for dose reduction should be reformulated., No funding was received for this work

Aim: The aim of this study was to analyze the prognostic value of integrin subunit β1 and laminin γ1 chain in patients with cervical cancer (CC). Materials & methods: The study included 96 samples. Cytological diagnosis, human papillomavirus (HPV) genotyping, HPV integration status and integrin subunit β1 and laminin γ1 chain expressions were performed or determined using Papanicolaou smear, INNO-LiPA® Genotyping Extra Kit, in situ hybridization, and immunocytochemistry, respectively. The association between variables was calculated using chi-squared and Fisher’s exact test; logistic regression analysis was performed to calculate odds ratios and CI at 95%. [Aim] One of the main goals of functional biogeography is to examine distribution patterns of trait diversity, and islands provide excellent study cases for this emerging field. We tested the hypothesis that multiple dispersals from a common mainland pool would promote functional similarity among island systems when environmental conditions are similar, but also novel phenotypic traits related to colonization history and exploitation of new habitats., [Location] Mediterranean Basin and Macaronesian islands., [Taxon] Wolfbane (Periploca laevigata), [Methods] We used the well‐known biogeographical history of a woody plant complex (P. laevigata s.l.) to examine trait variation and how it relates to climatic conditions of mainland and subtropical island settings. In a common garden experiment, we measured a suite of leaf physiological and anatomical traits tightly related to plant performance in 320 seedlings representing 21 populations of five sublineages—the oldest (2.6 my) island colonization (western Canary Islands) as a reference, three sublineages stemming from independent events of island colonization in the last 0.5 my from NW Africa (Cape Verde, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote) and their widespread Mediterranean mainland counterpart., [Results] We observed strong phenotypic divergence between island and mainland sublineages linked to contrasting climatic conditions. Mediterranean mainland populations displayed a very specialized leaf phenotype characteristic of arid plants (i.e. small leaves, amphistomaty, isobilateral mesophyll, high photosynthetic rates). In turn, low seasonality on islands was linked to the recurrent expression of a phenotype characterized by larger leaves and lower photosynthetic rates. Our analyses showed that the high investment in secondary compounds (i.e. tannins) on islands decouples photosynthesis from growth rates. Despite this pattern of parallel differentiation, each island sublineage displayed a distinctive phenotype, with some traits related to colonization time, which resulted in a mosaic of functional variation across island systems., [Main conclusions] Our data suggest that the studied subtropical islands promote expression of traits specific to certain sublineages and other common traits that are no longer adaptive in the original mainland pool due to Pleistocene climatic shifts. Solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation has increased in recent years due to ozone layer depletion and in Ecuador in particular, due to its geographical position and the height of its cities. Prolonged sun exposures in childhood increase the risk of causing malignant effects on the skin and eyes, such as squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma and cataracts. For this reason, this document describes the design of a device based on UV optical sensors that allows determining the existing radiation index. As a processing unit there is the Raspberry Pi 3B+ embedded board and to display the data physically there are LED panels. The storage of information is done through a database managed by MySQL and also implemented on the board. The levels of the ultraviolet radiation index (UVI) are presented through a graphical user interface (GUI) in real time, which also allows generating a report in a .csv file. Functional tests were carried out in the central courtyard of two educational units, to raise awareness among parents and authorities on the adoption of preventive measures that avoid possible damage to the skin of children when carrying out outdoor activities.

Consumption of a Western diet (WD) induces central aortic stiffening that contributes to the transmittance of pulsatile blood flow to end organs, including the kidney. Our recent work supports that endothelial epithelial Na+ channel (EnNaC) expression and activation enhances aortic endothelial cell stiffening through reductions in endothelial nitric oxide (NO) synthase (eNOS) and bioavailable NO that result in inflammatory and oxidant responses and perivascular fibrosis. However, the role that EnNaC activation has on endothelial responses in the renal circulation remains unknown. We hypothesized that cell-specific deletion of the α-subunit of EnNaC would prevent WD-induced central aortic stiffness and protect the kidney from endothelial dysfunction and vascular stiffening. Twenty-eight-week-old female αEnNaC knockout and wild-type mice were fed either mouse chow or WD containing excess fat (46%), sucrose, and fructose (17.5% each). WD feeding increased fat mass, indexes of vascular stiffening in the aorta and renal artery (in vivo pulse wave velocity and ultrasound), and renal endothelial cell stiffening (ex vivo atomic force microscopy). WD further impaired aortic endothelium-dependent relaxation and renal artery compliance (pressure myography) without changes in blood pressure. WD-induced renal arterial stiffening occurred in parallel to attenuated eNOS activation, increased oxidative stress, and aortic and renal perivascular fibrosis. αEnNaC deletion prevented these abnormalities and support a novel mechanism by which WD contributes to renal arterial stiffening that is endothelium and Na+ channel dependent. These results demonstrate that cell-specific EnNaC is important in propagating pulsatility into the renal circulation, generating oxidant stress, reduced bioavailable NO, and renal vessel wall fibrosis and stiffening.

Introduction Although a number of contraception methods exist, long-acting reversible contraceptives have been recommended for female adolescents owing to their low failure rates. However, concern exists that the increasing use of long-acting reversible contraceptive among female adolescents may have unintended consequences of decreasing condom use for the prevention of sexually transmitted infections. Despite this concern, few studies have directly explored the relationship between the use of long-acting reversible contraceptive versus other forms of contraception and diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections in female adolescents. This study compares the rates of sexually transmitted infection diagnosis following various forms of contraceptive use. Methods This study was an archival data analysis of single state Medicaid claims retrieved for female adolescents, aged 14–19 years, who received a contraceptive prescription and had 1 year of follow-up data available (n=62,550) between 2011 and 2015. Incidence of sexually transmitted infections was the outcome of interest. Data analysis was conducted in 2018. Results Compared with the contraceptive pill, hormonal implant (a form of long-acting reversible contraceptives) was associated with significantly lower risk of sexually transmitted infections (hazard ratio=0.81; 95% CI=0.70, 0.93; p=0.004), and hormonal injection was associated with higher risk of sexually transmitted infections (hazard ratio=1.08; 95% CI=1.00, 1.16; p=0.040). Conclusions This analysis provides strong evidence that the risk for the acquisition of sexually transmitted infections is no higher for long-acting reversible contraceptives than for other forms of contraception. These results support the use of long-acting reversible contraceptive in female adolescents, as proposed and reaffirmed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and American Academy of Pediatrics.
