Background: Given the inevitable relentless progressing nature of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), it is essential to identify factors influencing patients’ wellbeing. The study aimed to prospectively assess factors influencing the quality of life (QoL) and depression in ALS patients compared to healthy controls (HCs) from Poland, Germany and Sweden and their relationship to socio-demographic and clinical factors. Methods: 314 ALS patients (120 from Poland, 140 from Germany, 54 from Sweden) and 311 age-, sex- and education-level-matched HCs underwent standardized interviews for quality of life, depression, functional status and pain. Results: Patients from all three countries showed similar levels of functional impairment (ALSFRS-R). Overall, ALS patients assessed their quality of life as lower compared to HCs (p < 0.001 for the anamnestic comparative self-assessment (ACSA), p = 0.002 for the Schedule for the evaluation of the subjective quality of life - SEIQoL- direct weighting (SEIQoL-DW). Also, the German and Swedish patients, but not the Polish, reported higher depression levels than the corresponding HCs (p < 0.001). Analysis of ALS groups revealed that functional impairment was related to a lower quality of life (ACSA) and higher depression levels among German ALS patients. Longer time since diagnosis predicted lower depression and (in male subjects) higher quality of life. Conclusions: ALS patients assess their quality of life and mood lower than healthy individuals within the studied countries. The relationships between clinical and demographic factors are moderated by country of provenance, which bears implications for the design and interpretation of scientific and clinical studies, which should reflect the complexity and heterogeneity of mechanisms determining QoL.

Successful employment of experienced employees becomes more important for both, individuals and organizations. To identify organizational practices that foster the motivation, health, and performance of experienced employees in particular, a holistic assessment of relevant organizational factors is needed. The Later Life Workplace Index (LLWI) provides such a measure for organizational practices for older employees by differentiating nine domains, namely organizational climate, leadership, work design, health management, individual development, knowledge management, transition to retirement, continued employment after retirement, and health and retirement coverage. So far, a German-language and an English-language version of the LLWI have been validated in Germany and the U.S in a multi-study procedure. The psychometric properties and measurement invariance of the English-language version of the LLWI will be presented. Preliminary findings from Japan and Portugal show promising results regarding reliability and validity of the LLWI in the respective country. The findings suggest that the multidimensional measurement model developed in Germany and the U.S. could be applicable to other regulatory and cultural contexts as well. A focus group consisting of the original authors of the LLWI and international scholars, whose research expertise lies in the field of employment and older employees, is currently developing a short version of the LLWI. We aim to provide researchers and practitioners from different countries with a validated measurement to holistically assess organizational practices. Researchers can utilize the LLWI to gain a comprehensive understanding of organizational influences on later life work, while practitioners are able to assess their organizational readiness for an aging workforce.

Due to aging workforces, research on organizational practices for older employees becomes more important for individuals and organizations. However, existing measures for such organizational practices tend to capture the construct with unidimensional scales, use single-item operationalizations, or focus on a specific area. Hence, Wöhrmann, Deller, and Pundt (2018) developed the Later Life Workplace Index (LLWI) to provide a multidimensional framework to measure organizational practices for older employees on nine dimensions, namely organizational climate, leadership, work design, health management, individual development, knowledge management, transition to retirement, continued employment after retirement, and health and retirement coverage. The LLWI has recently been operationalized and validated in Germany (Wilckens, Wöhrmann, Deller, & Wang, 2020). However, to utilize the index beyond German-speaking countries, a validated English version is required. Thus, we aimed to validate an English version of the LLWI using a sample of older U.S. employees (N = 279). Results support the domain level factor structure of the LLWI but show some redundancy among the 80 items for the overall nine domain factor structure. A comparison between the U.S. sample and a German sample (N = 349) confirmed configural and (partial) metric measurement invariance of the English version. Results further supported convergent, discriminant, criterion, as well as incremental validity. Researchers can utilize the new measure to gain a deeper understanding of organizational practices relevant for older employees, while practitioners are able to assess their organizational readiness for an aging workforce. We envision further translation and validation in other languages and cultural contexts.

Die demografische Entwicklung stellt Unternehmen und Institutionen vor die Herausforderung, mit zunehmend altersdiversen Belegschaften umzugehen und ältere Beschäftigte weiter erfolgreich zu beschäftigten. In Deutschland hat sich die Anzahl der Erwerbstätigen im Alter von über 55 Jahren von 2006 bis 2016 auf über 10 Millionen verdoppelt. Fast jeder vierte Erwerbstätige ist schon heute über 55 Jahre alt, Tendenz steigend. Nicht zuletzt die wachsende gesundheitliche Fitness Älterer und die wachsende Lebenserwartung erhöhen vor allem in dem gut ausgebildeten Teil der Erwerbstätigen die Motivation, auch im Alter weiterhin einer sinnstiftenden Arbeit nachzugehen.Die Alterung der Belegschaften birgt eine Reihe von betrieblichen Herausforderungen, für die es Lösungen zu erarbeiten gilt. Zunehmend altersdiverse Teams bedingen ein altersfreundliches Organisationsklima und entsprechende Führung. Tätigkeiten, Arbeitsplätze und betriebliche Rahmenbedingungen sind an die veränderten Fähigkeiten und Bedürfnisse älterer Beschäftigter anzupassen und Fähigkeiten insbesondere im Zeitalter der Digitalisierung auch im Alter gezielt auszubauen. Zudem ist vielen Beschäftigten im Rentenalter insbesondere die persönliche Entwicklung wichtig. Schließlich macht die steigende Zahl von Renteneintritten eine erfolgreiche Nachfolgeplanung und effektiven Wissenstransfer unerlässlich, um Erfahrungen und Kompetenzen in der Organisation zu erhalten. Im Rahmen der Entwicklung des Later Life Workplace Indexes (LLWI) adressieren wir diese betrieblichen Herausforderungen und haben ein Instrument geschaffen, das auf Basis bestehender Erkenntnisse zu förderlichen Rahmenbedingungen und konkreten Maßnahmen eine verlässliche und valide Einschätzung der Situation in Unternehmen und Institutionen ermöglicht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen organisationsspezifisch Stärken und Entwicklungsfelder auf. Sie geben somit Leitlinien für potentielle Maßnahmen zur Verbesserung von Gesundheit, Leistung und Motivation älterer Beschäftigter und altersdiverser Teams.Eine alternde Erwerbsbevölkerung wirft die Frage auf, wie man die Produktivität aufrechterhalten kann, wie man trotz zu verrentender Baby-Boom Generationen unternehmensspezifisches Wissen erhält und wie man dem Fachkräftemangel erfolgreich begegnet. Aber auch der Staat muss sich aufgrund der Überalterung mit der Überlastung des Renten-, Pflege- und Gesundheitssystems auseinandersetzen. Die Politik hat diese Auswirkungen des demographischen Wandels auf Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft erkannt. In der Vergangenheit wurden daher verschiedene Versuche zur Erhöhung der Beschäftigungsquote älterer Erwerbstätiger unternommen. So wird das Renteneintrittsalter ab 2012 schrittweise um insgesamt 24 Monate auf 67 Jahre im Jahr 2029 angehoben. Das Ende der Erwerbstätigkeit wird so hinausgezögert und an die gesteigerte Lebenserwartung angepasst. Aber auch der Anstieg des Renteneintrittsalters kann die sinkende Anzahl der Erwerbstätigen nur bedingt aufhalten. Der Beschäftigung bis zum und auch über das Renteneintrittsalter hinaus kommt daher stetig mehr Bedeutung zu, und die Potenziale der älteren Erwerbstätigen rücken immer stärker in den Mittelpunkt von Wirtschaft und Forschung.
