The third Workshop on Optimization of Biological Sampling (WKBIOPTIM3) convened to dis-cuss practical aspects of optimization of sampling and provide a compilation of methods so that this information is well documented and organized for end users. New optimization algorithms were presented alongside developments and improvements of the work carried out in the earlier 2017 and 2018 workshops. Six different approaches/tools were presented: code developed under WKBIOPTIM 1 and 2 for optimization at sample level (SampleLevelOptim), SampleOptim R-tool to optimize fish sampling for biological parameters, code for quantifying robustness of a length frequency distribution shape (SampleReferenceLevel), SDTool and BioSimTool as contri-butions from the STREAM Project to the optimization at sample-level and sampling design level, respectively, WKBIOPTIM code used for optimization at sampling design level (SimPop). Addi-tionally, data exploration and biological simulation tools developed under the framework of fishPi2 (FishPi4WKBioptim). R-scripts for the different tools are available on the WKBIOPTIM3 GitHub (https://github.com/ices-eg/wk_WKBIOPTIM3).Usability testing, including thorough instructions, were a focus of the workshop. As such, the group used a two-tiered system to evaluate the methods. The first subgroup tested the different scripts with their own data to see if they were of easy use. This first group also evaluated the documentation needed and whether it was clear how to interpret the results properly, how to decide on the best procedure according to their objectives, and how to compare results obtained using similar approaches. Based on this assessment, the second subgroup then cleaned and doc-umented the code, discussing the approaches used in the different scripts and potential options for integration. In parallel, some participants developed a first draft of standardized notation aimed at harmonizing the documentation of simulation procedures used in the different codes, tested a new quality indicator for length frequency and developed scripts that demonstrate the effects of the common options of resampling ‘with replacement’ (wr) and ‘without replacement’ (wor) in the precision and bias of estimates. The workshop concluded with participants high-lighting that specific documentation regarding quality indicators concepts and functions could also be very practical and useful for end users. Work of WKBIOPTIM will continue intersession-ally towards a final discussion of methodologies and results in 2020.

The Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) was established by the Conference of Parties in 2002 to decrease the loss of plant diversity, reduce poverty and contribute to sustainable development. To achieve this overarching goal, the GSPC has established a series of targets, one of which is to ensure that plant diversity is well understood, so that it can be effectively conserved and used in a sustainable manner. Brazil hosts more than 46,000 species of plants, algae and fungi, representing one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth, and playing a key role in the GSPC. To meet the GSPC goals of Target 1 and facilitate access to plant diversity, Brazil committed to preparing the List of Species of the Brazilian Flora (2008-2015) and the Brazilian Flora 2020 (2016-present). Managing all the information associated with such great biodiversity has proven to be an extremely challenging task. Here, we synthesize the history of these projects, focusing on the multidisciplinary and collaborative approach adopted to develop and manage the inclusion of all the knowledge generated though digital information systems. We further describe the methods used, challenges faced, and strategies adopted, as well as summarize advances to date and prospects for completing the Brazilian flora in 2020.

A determinação do status da proteína HER2 por imunocitoquímica é uma metodologia fundamental para o diagnóstico, prognóstico e indicação terapêutica no carcinoma da mama, nomeadamente para o encaminhamento terapêutico com Herceptin®/trastuzumab. O estabelecimento desta terapêutica nas vertentes adjuvante ou neoadjuvante, e até em doença metastática, tem vindo a acentuar a importância da determinação do referido status de modo a melhor responder às necessidades dos doentes. Sendo a imunocitoquímica o método validado para determinação do status HER2 em carcinoma da mama, é de extrema importância definir linhas de orientação para a sua correta performance como tem sido estabelecido em diversos países em todo o mundo. A área científica de Anatomia Patológica, Citológica e Tanatológica da Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde de Lisboa (APCT-ESTeSL) e a Associação Portuguesa de Técnicos de Anatomia Patológica (APTAP) reuniram um painel de especialistas para a construção e estabelecimento de linhas de orientação técnica para a determinação do status HER2 em carcinoma da mama para a realidade portuguesa., Saúde & Tecnologia, 2012: Temático 1: Cancro da mama - Uma abordagem multidisciplinar

Todas as orientações aqui descritas têm em conta o estado da arte atual no que diz respeito à determinação do status HER2 por imunocitoquímica em carcinoma da mama, bem como a experiência pessoal e académica de cada um dos membros do painel de especialistas que a subscrevem.

Tese de doutoramento em Engenharia de Materiais, For the past decades, the technological and industrial development has resulted in high demanding of the society. This is many times translated in the need to have a material with intrinsic properties for a certain application, justifying the investments in the area of thin film technology. Due to the increasing demands of the technology applications, the continuous study of the target's material and the deposition method to obtain films with different properties has been inappropriate. Instead, the development of different technologies and processing conditions that allow a wide range of properties using the same targets and only modifying the deposition conditions represent a significant earning in terms of time and in versatility of the systems. Finally, this could expand the application field. Thin films of titanium oxycarbide were prepared by de magnetron reactive sputtering. The aim of this thesis was to vary the composition of the films and to link it with their physical, chemical and mechanical properties. Therefore, different preparation conditions were performed: the use of a TiC target; and the use of a Ti target with cylindrical carbon pieces incrusted in is erosion zone. For some properties, the behaviour of the thin films with the variation of the bias potential was also investigated. It was shown that the type of target used has a great influence of the composition of the films. The use of a TiC target promotes a higher quantity of carbon in the films, while the Ti target with C pieces promotes a much poor C films. In both cases, it was shown that is possible to obtain a wide range of coatings presenting characteristics from metallic titanium carbide or metallic titanium oxide to stoichiometric TiO2. Thus, it was possible to correlate the parameters of the process and the properties of the films. The analysis of the properties allowed us to get three groups of samples: opaque titanium carbide or oxides (TiC:O I TiO:C), conducting and defined as metallic zone (or region); an intermediate titanium oxycarbide TiCOy, called transition zone; and a transparent and insulating Ti02:C called oxide zone. Regarding the films with polarization variation it was found that the increase of negative polarization promotes a densification of the films and an amorphization. Attending all the characterization that was provided: mechanical, tribocorrosion, thermal, electrical and optical; and the obtained results, it seems that these films are multifunctional, since they work simultaneously to several situations as it can combine several properties in one film., O elevado desenvolvimento tecnológico e industrial que se tem verificado nas últimas décadas traduz-se em solicitações cada vez mais exigentes, para as quais é muitas vezes necessário que um dado material apresente um gradiente de propriedades com vista a determinada aplicação. Desta forma se justifica o grande investimento na área dos filmes finos. Devido às crescentes exigências das aplicações tecnológicas, a mudança continua no material do alvo e do processo de deposição para obter filmes com diferentes propriedades apresenta-se inadequado, pelo que ø desenvolvimento de tecnologias/condições de processamento que permitam a obtenção de uma gama de propriedades recorrendo aos mesmos alvos e modificando apenas as condições de deposição representam um ganho significativo quer cm termos de tempo quer no que respeita à versatilidade dos próprios sistemas, permitindo a expansão do campo de aplicação. Neste trabalho foram produzidos filmes de oxicarboneto de titânio, TiCxOy por pulverização catódica cm magnetrão. 0 objetivo desta tese consistiu na variação da composição dos filmes, relacionando-a com as suas propriedades físicas, químicas e mecânicas. Desta forma, foram usadas diferentes condições de preparação: a utilização de um alvo composto de TiC; e o uso de um alvo de Ti com pastilhas cilíndricas de C incrustadas na sua zona de erosão. Foram produzidos alguns filmes com variação do potencial no alvo, que foram analisados por algumas técnicas de caracterização. Foi verificado que o tipo de alvo utilizado tem uma grande influência na composição dos filmes. A uti1izaço de um alvo de TiC promove uma maior quantidade de carbono nos filmes, enquanto o alvo de Ti com pastilhas de C promove filmes com pouco carbono. Em ambos os casos, foi demonstrado que é possível obter uma gama de filmes finos que variam desde carboneto de titânio (TiC) ou óxido de titânio metálico (TiO) para filmes de dióxido de titânio (Ti02). Assim, foi possível relacionar os parâmetros do processo de deposição e as propriedades dos filmes. A análise das diferentes propriedades dos filmes permitiu o reconhecimento de três grupos de filmes: zona metálica, caracterizada por filmes de carboneto de titânio ou óxido de titânio (TiC:0 / TiO:C) condutor; urna zona de transição composta por filmes de TiCxOy; e uma zona designada de óxido caracterizada por filmes transparentes e isolantes de TiO2. Relativamente aos filmes com variação da polarização, verificou-se que com o aumento da polarização negativa os filmes se tronam mais densos e amorfos. Com a caracterização efetuada: mecânica, tribocorrosão, térmica, elétrica e óptica, e os resultados obtidos, estes filmes parecem tratar-se de, materiais multifuncionais, já que funcionam simultaneamente para várias situações já que que se conseguem conjugar várias propriedades interessantes num só filme.

Objective Exploring maternal experience with premature newborn children in a domestic environment. Methods The study was qualitative and used focus group interviews with 24 women who had had preterm deliveries in a public maternity hospital located in Northeast Brazil during June and October 2005. The mothers returned to the hospital facility at least 30 days after the newborn were discharged to share their experiences in caring for a premature infant at home. Results Interview data was analysed for content, four thematic nuclei being identified: hospital discharge, preparing the family for discharge, caring for a premature baby at home and life changes arising from the premature birth. The greatest difficulties reported by the mothers in caring for their premature children at home were related to feeding and feelings of insecurity and fear were expressed which showed the need for a support network for the families following discharge. Conclusions The mothers care of premature infants at home represented changes for parents in everyday family life, work and social life, thus showing the need for a support network for them during the transition from hospital to home when considering premature children. Objetivo Explorar as vivências maternas no cuidar de um recém-nascido prematuro em casa e analisar as dificuldades na assistência materno-infantil, após a alta hospitalar dos prematuros. Métodos Estudo descritivo de natureza qualitativa com utilização do grupo focal com 24 mulheres que tiveram partos pré-termos em uma Maternidade escola, referência estadual para gestação de alto risco no nordeste brasileiro, no período junho a outubro de 2005. As mulheres retornaram ao serviço no período mínimo de 30 dias após a alta do neonato para relatar suas experiências de como cuidavam do recém-nascido prematuro em casa. Resultados Os conteúdos das entrevistas foram divididos em quatro núcleos temáticos: A alta hospitalar; o preparo da família para a alta; cuidando de um bebê prematuro no domicílio materno e, mudanças na vida impostas pelo nascimento prematuro. As maiores dificuldades apresentados pelas mães no cuidado com o filho prematuro em casa dizem respeito à alimentação e resultaram das falhas da equipe de saúde no preparo dessas famílias para os cuidados domiciliares com o prematuro. Surgiram ainda sentimentos de insegurança e medo, revelando a necessidade de uma rede de apoio com seguimento ambulatorial e de pronto atendimento para oferecer suporte à s famílias de bebês prematuros após a alta. Conclusàµes No cuidado materno com o filho prematuro no domicílio predominaram sentimentos negativos que impuseram mudanças no cotidiano familiar, no trabalho e na própria vida social, revelando a necessidade de apoio aos pais na transição da vida hospitalar para domiciliar em situação de prematuridade. Objetivo Explorar las experiencias maternas con recién nacidos prematuros en el entorno domiciliario. Métodos Estudio cualitativo que utilizó un grupo focal con 24 mujeres que tuvieron partos prematuros entre junio y octubre de 2005 en una maternidad pública en el noreste de Brasil. Las madres regresaron a la instalación al menos 30 días después del alta del parto para compartir sus experiencias en el cuidado de un recién nacido prematuro en el hogar. Resultados Cuatro núcleos temáticos fueron identificados: el alta hospitalaria, la preparación de la familia para la aprobación de la gestión, el cuidado de un bebé prematuro en el hogar y los cambios en la vida como resultado del nacimiento prematuro. Las mayores dificultades seà±aladas por las madres en el cuidado de sus nià±os prematuros en el hogar estaban relacionados con la alimentación y se expresaron sentimientos de inseguridad y temor, lo que demuestra la necesidad de una red de apoyo a las familias después del alta. Conclusión El cuidado de la madre del recién nacido prematuro en el hogar representa para los padres cambios diarios en la familia, el trabajo y la vida social, mostrando la necesidad de una red de apoyo para ellos durante la transición del hospital a la casa en una situación de prematuridad.

The cryogenic system of the LHC will use Pt-100 sensors to measure temperatures between 40-300K and isolation devices will be used. The selected commercial components must be rad-tolerant since a total radiation dose of 5E12 n/cm2 &100 Gy is expected during ten years of the LHC lifetime. Neutron tests in this family of devices were performed and the results are shown in this paper.

Instrumentation amplifiers and voltage controlled current sources have been designed by using single operational amplifiers (OPA124, TLE2071 and OPA627). Their performance has been evaluated in the laboratory and under neutron radiation. On line measurements of the offset voltages, offset currents, closed loop gain, CMRR and bias currents were performed on the amplifiers. The current sources were set to a constant value and the current was monitored on-line. The radiation tolerance of commercial voltage references has also been investigated. The radiation was performed out in ITN (Portugal) research nuclear reactor. In comparison to previous experimental campaigns the gamma radiation has been reduced by a factor 15 for a given neutron dose. This is achieved thanks to a recently constructed facility for neutron beam extraction

The LHC accelerator will use about 1600 main superconducting magnets operating below 2K. The magnets temperature is a control parameter and its target accuracy imposes very severe constraints on both the sensing element and its signal conditioner. They will both be installed inside the tunnel, thus exposed to a relatively high neutron fluence and gamma dose. It is then crucial to understand the effects of radiation on the performance of the electronic components that will be selected for the signal conditioner. This paper presents data concerning the radiation effects on typical active and passive discrete electronic components. This is the first step toward building a radiation tolerant signal conditioner.

Integration has meant great changes for Brazilian Northeast since its becoming part of the regional division of labour that allowed the constitution of a single domestic production system in the country in the 1950s. This process required the Northeastern economy to adjust to the extent of embarking into new industrial sectors and dismantling old industrial capacity, such as textiles. This adjustment has however developed the region's industrial capacity and competitiveness which allowed it to improve exports - both foreign and interregional - and reduce its so-called "structural" trade deficit in the 1980s. This context has changed by the constitution of the South American Common Market - the Mercosul. The new trade block has inspired northeastern polititians and diverse analysts to argue that the regional economy is to become less important for Brazilian domestic market and production system, as the interindustrial links are to enhance among southern and southeastern firms. Government expenditures as well as private investments concentrated in these regions gives them the explanation for their belief. The recent moves towards increasing the commercial links between the European Union and the Mercosul bring new facts to the context. The Northeast could emerge as holding competitive advantages out of this integration process into which the Brazilian economy is getting. There could be argued that the region's historical backwardness could decrease in the context of fusions, acquisitions and the like by European capital? Would not this be the case of moving backwards to the period in which there was no integrated domestic market and the Northeast, as other regions in Brazil, basically traded with European partners. These are the main questions this paper is to answer.
