To evaluate the efficacy of five methods: pelvic examination (PE), transvaginal ultrasonography (US), Doppler ultrasonography, serum CA125 assay and serum CA72-4 assay, alone or associated, to predict malignancy in patients presenting a pelvic mass originating in the ovary.92 patients underwent a standard protocol for physical examination, CA125, CA72-4, transvaginal ultrasonography and Doppler ultrasonography.Eighteen women were dropped from the study because they had clearly benign masses; two women were dropped from the study because they had clearly malignant lesions. Twenty-two malignant (30%) and 50 benign (70%) pelvic tumors were found. When one method was considered alone the best sensitivity (SENS) was found in physical examination (90%) and the best specificity (SPEC) was found in CA72-4: 88%. If all indicators were positive, the SPEC was 100% but the SENS was 40%. Logistic regression analysis prediction of the character of the pelvic masses was correct in 86%.Some additional information to discriminate between malignant and benign pelvic masses can be obtained from the valuation of serum tumor markers, particularly CA72-4. Also Doppler ultrasonography appeared to be useful in the differential diagnosis of pelvic tumors. The prediction of the character of the pelvic masses calculated by a logistic model in which PE, US, CA 125, and CA72-4 are included is very good.

The aim of this study is to investigate similitudis and differences between the Meigs' syndrome and Meigs' pseudosyndrom. The Meigs' syndrome is an uncommon disease that is characterized by benign ovarian tumor, ascites and pleural effusion. The Meigs' pseudosyndrom is a serious disease that is characterized by malignant ovarian tumor, ascites, pleural effusion.We have examined two cases: a case of Meigs' syndrome that is characterized by vomit, abdominal pain, ascites, height serum Ca 125 level; a case of Meigs' pseudosyndrom that is characterized by ovarian adenocarcinoma that is diagnosticated owing to ascites and pleural effusion.This study suggest that the surgical therapy have a very important role for the complete remission of the disease in the Meigs' syndrome and for the remission of ascites and pleural effusion in the Meigs' pseudosyndrom.

Objective The study investigates the sexual function during pregnancy. Methods The sample in cludes 195 pregnant women engaged in stable relationships and having no pregnancy related restriction about their sexual habits. On their antenatal examination, subjects were asked to fill in the FSFI and WHO-5 (Wellbeing Index Scoring 1998) questionnaires anonymously, evaluating sexual life during each trimester and psycho-physical wellbeing respectively. We scored each FSFI and WHO domain and the mean scores were compared, according to the pregnancy trimester. We had 65 subjects for each trimester (mean age= 33.4 - SD± 6.9). Results WHO5 questionnaire: first group's (first trimester) mean score was 13.9 (SD± 6.5), second group's (second trimester) 13.9 (SD ±5.7) and third group's (third trimester) 12.3 (SD± 4.9); FSFI: first group's mean score was 63.0 (SD± 21.5), second group's 59.7 (SD± 18.5), third group's 38.7 (SD±29.3). Discussion Despite the sample's width, former studies are confirmed. However, there is an improvement of the sexual parameters in the first trimester, best than the second one. The third trimester data, likewise literature's, show a worse sexual function, even if differences among items are possible, due to troubles of the antenatal period (lumbar pain, fatigue etc.). WHO-5 data are positive among the three groups, showing a good wellbeing and psychophysical balance.
