Touch is the primary way people communicate intimacy in romantic relationships, and affectionate touch behaviors such as stroking, hugging and kissing are universally observed in partnerships all over the world. Here, we explored the association of love and affectionate touch behaviors in romantic partnerships in two studies comprising 7880 participants. In the first study, we used a cross-cultural survey conducted in 37 countries to test whether love was universally associated with affectionate touch behaviors. In the second study, using a more fine-tuned touch behavior scale, we tested whether the frequency of affectionate touch behaviors was related to love in romantic partnerships. As hypothesized, love was significantly and positively associated with affectionate touch behaviors in both studies and this result was replicated regardless of the inclusion of potentially relevant factors as controls. Altogether, our data strongly suggest that affectionate touch is a relatively stable characteristic of human romantic relationships that is robustly and reliably related to the degree of reported love between partners.

In the present case study, the aim is to show an example of the effect on residual fertility parameters (particularly with regard to the re-sprouting of plants after the harvesting of the aerial part), taken from a pot experiment, where modalities without fertilization, with mineral fertilization, with organic fertilization and with mixed fertilization were contrasted. Within this context it is possible to conclude the following: Mineral fertilization, alone, leads to a drastic inhibition of plant re-sprouting, that even in mixed fertilization situations (mineral + organic) it is considerable; in terms of residual microbiological activity, this phenomenon seems to be better correlated with reduced dehydrogenase activity than with β-Glucosidase activity.

Inclusion criteria were age-related cataract and a corneal astigmatism between 0.90D and 4.50D. Refractive astigmatism predictability of five different toric calculators or calculation methods were compared. Furthermore, two groups were differentiated according to the type of astigmatism. The mean absolute error and the centroid errors in the predicted residual astigmatism from each calculator were evaluated.Results: Fifty-one eyes of 43 patients were included in the study. For the standard toric calculator using anterior keratometry values only, the centroid prediction error was 0.39D±0.41@166º, which was reduced by the application of the PhysIOL toric calculator that includes the Abulafia-Koch regression formula and adjustment for the effective lens position (0.05D±0.34@167º), and also by the application of the Barrett toric calculator (0.07D±0.28@160º). Regarding the techniques that directly evaluate posterior corneal surface, the Holladay toric calculator, using total corneal power provided by a color-LED topographer, generated better results (0.10D±0.44@156º) than those using Scheimpflug camera data (0.23D±0.56@158º). Similar results were found for both types of astigmatism.Conclusion: The PhysIOL and the Barrett toric calculators taking into account the posterior corneal astigmatism by mathematical models, yielded lower astigmatic prediction errors compared to a standard toric calculator based on anterior keratometry data only. Precarious manhood beliefs portray manhood, relative to womanhood, as a social status that is hard to earn, easy to lose, and proven via public action. Here, we present cross-cultural data on a brief measure of precarious manhood beliefs (the Precarious Manhood Beliefs scale [PMB]) that covaries meaningfully with other cross-culturally validated gender ideologies and with country-level indices of gender equality and human development. Using data from university samples in 62 countries across 13 world regions (N = 33,417), we demonstrate: (1) the psychometric isomorphism of the PMB (i.e., its comparability in meaning and statistical properties across the individual and country levels); (2) the PMB’s distinctness from, and associations with, ambivalent sexism and ambivalence toward men; and (3) associations of the PMB with nation-level gender equality and human development. Findings are discussed in terms of their statistical and theoretical implications for understanding widely-held beliefs about the precariousness of the male gender role. © The Author(s) 2021.

Introduction: Intensive insulin therapy is currently the main treatment in type I diabetes mellitus (DM) which includes multiple daily insulin injections (MDI) and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII). The latter has become the preferred therapeutic mode, since it better mimics the physiological pancreatic action, althought there is limited evidence that supports its superiority to MDI. The aim of our study was to assess the effects of the transition from MDI to CSII in the intensive treatment of type 1 DM. Material and Methods: A retrospective longitudinal study was perfonned in MDI patients that transited to CSII between 2006 and 2014. Data were collected regarding to weight, HbA1c, plasma glucose, lipid profile, creatinine, weekly frequency of episodes of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia and presence of microvascular complications. The effects of the transition to CSII were also compared according to the following subgroups: pre-CSII HbA1c (7.0%); age ( 35 years); gender (male versus female); BMI (25 kg/m2); duration of illness ( 15 years); total daily dose (TDD) of insulin ( 45 units of insulin); ISF ( 40) and microvascular complications (presence versus absence). Results: The sample included 85 patients, mean age 38 +/- 11 years, 50 (58.8%) female, with duration of the disease 21 +/- 9 years. There was a significant reduction in the frequency of hypo and hyperglycemia events after transition to CSII (3.0 +/- 5.0 vs 2 +/- 2.2 per week, p= 0.001 and 5.5 +/- 6.1 vs 2.5 +/- 2.6 per week, p = 0.05, respectively). Estudou-se o efeito de correctivos (óxido de ferro, Fe; matéria orgânica, MO; fosfato de cálcio, PCa), aplicados a um solo da área mineira de Penedono contaminado com As, no crescimento de tomateiro e salsa. Usaram-se, como controlos, este solo sem correctivos e um solo não contaminado. Durante o crescimento mediu-se a altura das plantas, comprimento foliar e teor relativo de clorofila. Na colheita final determinaram-se os pesos frescos e secos. Os correctivos influenciaram a disponibilidade de As no solo, relativamente ao original: Fe manteve-a enquanto MO e PCa a aumentaram. Ambas as espécies foram afectadas pelo arsénio, porém a resposta aos tratamentos foi diferente. A altura, comprimento dos folíolos, teor de clorofila, peso seco e número de frutos dos tomateiros foi significativamente superior em MO do que em Fe e controlo. The discovery that pericytes are in vivo counterparts of Mesenchymal Stem/Stromal Cells (MSCs) has placed these perivascular cells in the research spotlight, bringing up hope for a well-characterized cell source for clinical applications, alternative to poorly defined, heterogeneous MSCs preparations currently in use. Native pericytes express typical MSC markers and, after isolation by fluorescence-activated cell sorting, display an MSC phenotype in culture. These features have been demonstrated in different species, including humans and horses, the main targets of regenerative treatments. Significant clinical potential of pericytes has been shown by transplantation of human cells into rodent models of tissue injury, and it is hoped that future studies will demonstrate clinical potential in veterinary species. Here, we provide an overview of the current knowledge on pericytes across different species including humans, companion and large animal models, in relation to their identification in different body tissues, methodology for prospective isolation, characterization, and potential for tissue regeneration. © 2017 International Society for Advancement of Cytometry.

This study aims to explore age prejudice, and to examine age stereotyping in children and adolescents by adopting the Stereotype Content Model (SCM) as a theoretical framework. It was hypothesised that children are socialised into adopting an ambivalent representation of old age (socialisation hypothesis) and that this cognitive bias becomes weaker in adolescence due to greater cognitive maturity (developmental hypothesis). By analysing representative data from Portugal (European Social Survey; N?=?2367), it was ascertained that the ambivalent age stereotype (higher evaluations of warmth than competence for older people) is indeed a shared social representation of older people in Portuguese society. A total of 103 Portuguese children (6–10 year olds) and adolescents (11–15 year olds) were then sampled from a local school and responded to age-appropriate measures assessing age prejudice as well as age stereotypes. Contrary to previous studies, the findings do not provide evidence for the existence of age prejudice because both children and adolescents reported positive feelings towards older people. However, the socialisation hypothesis was corroborated by showing that the ambivalent old age stereotype was already present in childhood. Chapter 1. Introduction A literature background on the early development of the Pd-catalysed cross-coupling reactions and the later discovery of the enolate arylation reaction is presented. In the second part, the literature on pyruvate chemistry is explored, focusing on enantioselective transformations and the synthesis of α-arylated pyruvate derivatives. The final part presents reported protocols on the synthesis of β-carboline, isoquinoline and indole esters, from the classical approaches to the more recent methodologies based on metal catalysed transformations. Chapter 2. Results and Discussion 2.1 A study towards the synthesis of substituted amino-pyridines via 6π-electrocyclisation of 1-azatrienes is presented. The aspects impacting the efficiency of the cyclisation reaction are discussed using the experimental data collected and kinetic experiments published by other groups. 2.2 A synthetic methodology for the synthesis of substituted β-carbolines from 3-bromoindoles and commercially available ketones via Pd-catalysed enolate arylation is discussed. The α-functionalisation of the keto-indole intermediate with electrophiles provided access to C4-functionalised β-carbolines. The one-pot protocol for this sequence was also developed. 2.3 A protected pyruvate equivalent that allows the α-arylation and α-arylation/alkylation reactions to be carried out at the methyl group via Pd-catalysed enolate arylation is presented. The deprotection of the OBO moiety allows the formation mono and multiply α-functionalised pyruvates. 2.4 The synthesis of isoquinoline, β-carboline and indole esters via Pd-catalysed enolate arylation of the OBO-protected pyruvate equivalent developed in this thesis is demonstrated. The functionalisation of these heterocycles via α-alkylation of the aryl-ketone intermediates is also discussed and some examples synthesised to validate the methodology.

Three amendments (iron oxides, Fe; organic matter, MO; calcium phosphate, PCa) were applied to a naturally contaminated soil with arsenic and their effect on the growth of tomato plants and Italian parsley was studied. The results indicate differences associated with the availability of arsenic in the soil in the presence of amendments: Fe had no influence on arsenic availability compared with the unamended soil, while MO and PCa increased the avalability of arsenic.

The paper presents a description of the Picote II site, the objectives of the study that was carried out to assess the in situ state of stress in the rock mass, details of the testing programme and the methodology used for its interpretation. An overcoring testing programme was performed at the design stage, and a specific methodology was developed for the global interpretation of the test results, making use of a numerical model and considering the effect of the existing canyon on the stress field. This enabled to make recommendations regarding the initial stress field to consider in the design of the powerhouse cavern. Owing to the scarce information obtained at the design stage and to the high values of the calculated horizontal stresses, it was decided to perform additional stress measurement tests, using small flat jacks, once construction started and excavation of the adits reached the proximity of the underground powerhouse. Numerical simulations were also done for its interpretation and they confirmed the stress levels obtained at the design stage. The monitoring scheme implemented in the powerhouse cavern includes instrumentation to measure stress changes, which will occur during the excavation. No Instituto Dante Pazzanese de Cardiologia, as valvoplastias percutâneas para as valvas mitral e aórtica tiveram início em agosto de 1987. Foram realizados 37 procedimentos, sendo 26 para a mitral (VMP) e 1 para a aórtica (VAP). Nas 26 VMP, obteve-se sucesso 14 vezes, tendo 4 complicações. Em 3 pacientes, o sucesso não foi total, sendo que uma paciente com insuficiência mitral recusou cirurgia, outro foi operado e o terceiro está assintomático, mas não houve melhora da área valvar e das pressões, e deve ser reestudado para posterior avaliação. Os 9 pacientes restantes foram operados, sendo realizadas 6 comissurotomias e papilarotomias e 3 substituições valvares. A indicação cirúrgica se deu por tamponamento cardíaco em 1 caso, rotura de músculo papilar com conseqüente insuficiência em outro, 1 caso de baixo débito, punção da aorta em 4 casos e não passagem do cateter para o átrio esquerdo em 2 com suspeita de tamponamento não confirmada. O paciente submetido a VAP obteve melhora imediata do gradiente, mas faleceu 1 mês após, em insuficiência cardíaca. As valvoplastias percutâneas têm apresentado uma alternativa no tratamento das lesões valvares e são uma opção, principalmente para casos de valvas não calcificadas e com o aparelho subvalvar não comprometido. Devem ser lembradas nos casos em que a cirurgia é de alto risco, como em idosos, pneumopatas e nefropatas. Since August 1987, at the Instituto Dante Pazzanese de Cardiologia (IDPC) percutaneous mitral and aortic valvuloplasty was performed in 27 patients. In 26 for mitral and in 1 for aortic valve disease. In 26 patients mitral valvuloplasties success was accomplished in 14 patients. From those we had some complications in 4. The success was not total in 3 patients. One patient with mitral insufficiency refused surgery; the second one underwent surgery, and the third one is assymptomatic but without increase in valve area or drop in the gradient and will be reviewed. The last 9 patients underwent surgery. Six underwent commissurotomy and papilotomy and 3, valve replacement. The surgical indications were: cardiac tamponade in one, papilary muscle rupture in another one, low cardie output in 1 and puncture of the aorta in 4 cases. The catheter did not reach the left atrium in the last 2 cases and the hypothesis of cardiac tamponade was suspected, but not confirmed. The patient who underwent aortic valvuloplasty had the gradient dropped, but died one month later, in heart failure. Percutaneous valvuloplasty is an alternative treatment for patients with mitral or aortic valve stenosis without calcification or alterations of the subvalvar apparatus, mainly in those cases in which the surgery is of high risk like the elderly, in patient with renal and chronic lung diseases.

In this work, a strategy to automatically generate eye-believable motions for a virtual character that navigates in a 3D environment is presented. The overall approach consists of four components as follows. (1) A state-of-the-art path planner that computes a collision-free reference path for the character´s center of mass (COM). For this planner, a simplified model that bounds the character´s geometry is proposed. (2) A segmentation algorithm that divides the path into behaviors. (3) A classifier that compares each behavior with the corresponding motion capture segments previously analyzed and stored in a database. (4) A whole-body motion generator that synthesizes the appropriate behavior determined by the classifier. The main contribution of this work is to produce a sampling-based global motion planner that generates different behaviors (in addition to locomotion) issued from environmental constraints. Several results of our algorithm in different environments are shown and its current limitations are discussed.

Social role theory posits that binary gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in less egalitarian countries, reflecting these countries’ more pronounced sex-based power divisions. Conversely, evolutionary and self-construal theorists suggest that gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in more egalitarian countries, reflecting the greater autonomy support and flexible self-construction processes present in these countries. Using data from 62 countries (N = 28,640), we examine binary gender gaps in agentic and communal self-views as a function of country-level objective gender equality (the Global Gender Gap Index) and subjective distributions of social power (the Power Distance Index). Findings show that in more egalitarian countries, gender gaps in agency are smaller and gender gaps in communality are larger. These patterns are driven primarily by cross-country differences in men’s self-views and by the Power Distance Index (PDI) more robustly than the Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI). Erworben im Rahmen der Schweizer Nationallizenzen (http://www.nationallizenzen.ch), Numerous studies document that societal happiness is correlated with individualism, but the nature of this phenomenon remains understudied. In the current paper, we address this gap and test the reasoning that individualism correlates with societal happiness because the most common measure of societal happiness (i.e., country-level aggregates of personal life satisfaction) is individualism-themed. With the data collected from 13,009 participants across fifty countries, we compare associations of four types of happiness (out of which three are more collectivism-themed than personal life satisfaction) with two different measures of individualism. We replicated previous findings by demonstrating that societal happiness measured as country-level aggregate of personal life satisfaction is correlated with individualism. Importantly though, we also found that the country-level aggregates of the collectivism-themed measures of happiness do not tend to be significantly correlated with individualism. Implications for happiness studies and for policy makers are signaled.

The melting transition of a model semicrystalline polymer has been detected by the microcantilever deflection as a function of temperature. Deflection measurements were done on arrays of 8-cantilevers spin coated with the semicrystalline polymer: poly (propylene azelate). The melting of the polymer has been corroborated by grazing incidence wide angle x-ray scattering experiments performed with synchrotron radiation over a single cantilever.

Procurou-se primeiramente descrever a natureza jurídica e as razões da legitimidade conferida às associações civis para propositura de ações coletivas, passando-se, em seguida, a análise das fontes do mandado de segurança coletivo, incluindo regras legais e princípios. Também foram analisadas as características do mandado de segurança coletivo, com fins de evitar-se confusão entre ele e um writ individual. Após, foi sugerida a correta interpretação do artigo 22, da Lei nº 12.016/09, utilizando-se diversos métodos de hermenêutica jurídica, finalizando-se com a análise da jurisprudência relacionada ao assunto e opinião sobre a tendência do posicionamento dos tribunais superiores sobre a matéria. Concluiu-se no estudo que a coisa julgada no mandado de segurança coletivo impetrado pelas associações civis produz efeitos erga omnes, para atingir todos os membros do grupo prejudicado pelo ato coator, independentemente de sua qualidade de associado. Nos ordenamentos modernos tem-se apregoado as iniciativas probatórias do magistrado, bem como o seu livre convencimento motivado. Desta forma, com o alargamento dos poderes instrutórios do juiz, imperiosa é a tarefa do pesquisador do direito avaliar os critérios de admissibilidade, relevância e pertinência dos meios de prova, bem como a possibilidade de aplicação do instituto da preclusão de questões ao magistrado em matéria probatória, com o fito de eliminar conflitos concernentes ao (in)deferimento dos meios de prova no processo civil. Encontrar o ponto de equilíbrio entre o direito constitucional à prova e a obtenção de decisões justas, os princípios da celeridade, economia e concentração processuais é o objetivo desta pesquisa bibliográfica.
