Introduction: Trichothiodystrophy type 4 and glutaric aciduria type 3 are rare autosomal recessive disorders caused by biallelic variants in the MPLKIP and SUGCT genes on chromosome 7p14, respectively. Trichothiodystrophy type 4 is characterized by neurologic and cutaneous abnormalities. Glutaric aciduria type 3 is a rare metabolic disorder with inconsistent phenotype and elevated urinary excretion of glutaric acid. Case Presentation: Here, we report on an infant presenting with hypotonia, failure to thrive, microcephaly, dysmorphic features, brittle hair, hypertransaminasemia, and recurrent lower respiratory tract infections. Microarray analysis revealed a homozygous microdeletion involving the MPLKIP and SUGCT genes, which are located close to each other. Conclusion: Copy number variations should be considered in patients with coexisting clinical expression of different genetic alterations. To the best of our knowledge, our patient is the second case with co-occurrence of trichothiodystrophy type 4 and glutaric aciduria type 3, resulting from a contiguous gene deletion.

- Abstract
Learning activities employed in out-of-school learning activities (OOSLA) provide students with a different learning experience while enabling teachers to discover, implement, and evaluate different teaching approaches. This study intends to investigate the self-efficacy beliefs levels of teachers as regards OOSLA and whether these self-efficacy levels differ significantly depending on their gender, graduated faculty, educational status, seniority, and department graduated from. It adopts the descriptive survey design. The sample is composed of 308 teachers. The data were collected utilizing the "Teachers' Self-Efficacy Beliefs Toward Out-of-School Learning Activities Scale''. Parametric test statistics were used in data analysis. The results revealed that teachers had a high level of self-efficacy beliefs regarding OOSLA and that gender was not a determinant of teachers' self-efficacy beliefs. It was also found that the participants who completed graduate studies had firmer self-efficacy beliefs than those who did not. The teachers with 21 years and above of teaching experience had higher self-efficacy levels than those with 6-10 and 11-15 years of teaching experience. On the other hand, graduates of mathematics and science education departments had lower self-efficacy levels than primary education, Turkish education, and social science education departments. Finally, researchers recommend encouraging pursuing graduate studies, collaborating with experienced teachers, eliminating institutional obstacles to out-of-school activities, and supporting teachers in increasing their self-efficacy regarding out-of-school learning activities.

The importance given to space and aviation science has increased with the advanced technological breakthroughs that made the 21st century to be called the "Space Age". As the aviation industry evolved, it was found that exposure to flight conditions and atmospheric pressure alterations has a variety of adverse effects on the physiological and psychological states of aviation personnel. There are several disorders that might cause medical incapacitations and thus jeopardize flight safety in such conditions. Oral, dental, and maxillofacial diseases are among those that, although manifesting locally, affect all bodily systems. For this reason, the diagnosis and treatment of such disorders should be thoroughly evaluated and carried out in accordance with aeromedical concerns. The purpose of this review is to emphasize the importance of periodic aeromedical examinations for the prevention of potential oral and dental health-related diseases, as well as medical issues of aviation personnel that require special attention in terms of flight safety.

- Abstract
The monogenic causes of very early-onset inflammatory bowel disease (VEO-IBD) have been defined by advanced genetic studies, which were usually related to primary immunodeficiencies. Receptor-interacting serine/threonine-protein kinase-1 RIPK-1 protein is an important signalling molecule in inflammation and cell death pathways. Its deficiency may lead to different clinical features, via immunodeficiency and/or inflammation. Here we discussed an infant with malnutrition, VEO-IBD, reccurrent infections and polyathritis, who had a partial deletion in RIPK1 gene, adjacent biphenyl hydrolase-like (BPHL) gene, and a homozygous p.Glu148Gln mutation in Mediterranean fever (MEFV) gene. The superimposing effect of immune dysregulation of these two defective genes may lead to severe clinical presentation of our patient.

INTRODUCTION: Although hypobaric hypoxia training (HHT) is an essential component of aviation physiology training, it poses a risk of decompression sickness (DCS). DCS can sometimes be observed as a cluster of cases, which is referred to as epidemic DCS. In this report, we aim to evaluate an epidemic DCS episode that occurred following two consecutive HHT sessions.METHODS: A total of 16 trainees, all of whom were medical doctors, attended the aviation medicine training course in the aeromedical research and training center. They went through HHT in two sessions, each with eight trainees.RESULTS: Following two HHT sessions, five Type 1 DCS cases occurred among 18 personnel (16 trainees and 2 inside observers). DCS incidence rate was found to be 27.77%. They were successfully treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).DISCUSSION: Since the DCS incidence rate was found to be higher than the average in such a short period of time, this cluster of cases was labeled as epidemic DCS. We carried out a thorough investigation into all possible causes by following some templates that were developed to conduct comprehensive investigations into epidemic DCS episodes. According to the psychological arguments discussed here, we placed a special emphasis on hysterical and psychosocial components, among other probable factors. In cases where the possibility of hysteria and placebo-nocebo responses exist, it is appropriate to conduct the training and treatment processes with these factors in mind. No matter what the triggering factor is and how the symptoms manifest, HBOT remains crucial in the treatment of DCS.Demir AE, Ata N. In this study, the attitudes of teacher candidates towards the classroom as a learning environment was aimed to be examined. In order to determine the attitudes of teacher candidates towards the classroom as a learning environment, survey methods was used. The population of the research consisted of freshman and final grade students studying at the education faculty of a state university. The convenience sampling method was used while selecting the sample in the study. Accordingly, data were collected from 348 prospective teachers. The data of the research was obtained via the “Attitude Scale towards Classroom as a Learning Environment" developed by Çetin, Demirkan, and Çetin (2020). The data was analyzed with non-parametric tests. As a result of the research, it was determined that prospective teachers’ attitude scores towards the classroom as a learning environment were at a moderate level. Attitudes of female prospective teachers towards the classroom as a learning environment are more positive than those of males. Women find class less boring. The students of the fine arts education department see the classroom as indispensable in terms of the learning environment, in contrast to the students of the mathematics and science education department and the special education department. Students with a medium level perception of academic success have more negative attitudes towards the classroom as a learning environment than those with a good perception of academic success. Prospective teachers who are not satisfied with their department consider the classroom an indispensable learning environment compared to those who are partially satisfied. In light of the findings, it was suggested that classroom environments in education faculties should be improved in terms of classroom learning environment dimensions to help prospective teachers to develop positive attitudes.

The purpose of the current study is to investigate the distance education given via the Education Information Network platform, TRT EBA-TV and EBA live lesson during the Covid-19 pandemic on the basis of parents’ opinions. The current study employing the survey model was conducted with the participation of 709 parents. The research data were collected by an online questionnaire prepared by the researchers. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. As a result of the study, it was determined that during the distance education process, parents ensured that their children followed the lessons and motivated them, and students were eager to participate in the lessons. It was determined that student motivation was negatively affected for reasons such as connection problems and being closed at home during the pandemic. Parents stated that their awareness of their children’s education increased and they better understood the value of the teacher and school. It was revealed that there were technical problems in the process but support was received for the problems encountered. Though the parents think that face-to-face education cannot be replaced by distance education, they are of the opinion that distance education was good during the pandemic so that their children did not get alienated from the school. © 2021. This research aims to determine teacher candidates’ value perceptions and their opinions on the acquisition of values to teacher candidates, in education faculties. In the research, a survey model was used to describe an existing situation. In this context, a questionnaire was applied to 2274 teacher candidates. Research results show that the value perceptions of male teacher candidates are lower than female teacher candidates. The value perceptions of teacher candidates who chose the teaching profession because they had to, were lower than those who preferred it because they loved it. Perceptions of teacher candidates about the acquisition of values are low in the sub-dimensions of understanding and empathy, and medium in the other sub-dimensions. Teacher candidates’ perceptions of the values that teachers should have are quite high in all sub-dimensions. Despite this, the scores regarding the acquisition of the same values in education faculties are statistically significantly lower and middle levels. These results indicate that the values cannot be gained enough in education faculties. Various suggestions were made in line with the research findings and results, and recommendations were made for future research.

Simulated flight in a hypobaric chamber is a fundamental component in the physiological training of aviators. Although rare, there is always a risk of decompression sickness (DCS) in trainees during hypobaric hypoxia training. In this study we aimed to determine the incidence of altitude-induced DCS and the symptoms manifested in trainees and inside chamber observers (ICOs) during the training sessions. We retrospectively reviewed the records of DCS cases during the period of January 1, 2011, and October 1, 2018. The records of 6,657 trainees and 615 ICOs were evaluated. The gender distribution in 6,657 trainees was 6,578 (98.81%) male and 79 (1.19%) female. The numbers of DCS cases in trainees and ICOs were six (0.09%) and two (0.33%), respectively [(ICOs versus trainees – odds ratio (OR): 3.574; 95% CI 0.720–17.744; (p > 0.05)]. All ICOs were male; no DCS incident was observed among female trainees. Recompression treatments were applied on site, and complete recovery was achieved in all cases. Overall DCS incidence was found to be 0.11% among the 7,193 male subjects, which included trainees and ICOs. The higher incidence of DCS in ICOs was attributed to the physical activities performed at altitudes by ICOs. In such training, established instructions have to be strictly followed by physicians, ICOs and trainees. All trainees and ICOs should be aware of the symptoms and signs of DCS, and medical support including a recompression facility, should be provided on site during hypobaric hypoxia training.

This study situates how shadow education has become more visible in Turkey after an educational policy change in 2014 that regulated the closure of private tutoring centers –dershanes- and their transformation into a new type of private school called Basic High School - Temel Lise. In this multiple-case study, we interviewed school stakeholders and observed various processes such as classes and recitation hours at five Basic High Schools in Ankara, Turkey. The findings mainly revealed that Basic High Schools had a dual education structure in which the formal curricula were implemented and students were prepared for the university entrance examination, with an emphasis on the latter. Teaching to test was prioritized in these shadow schools for profit while most of the aspects of school quality were neglected. Further, since these schools were categorized as private schools, the school fee for these schools, although lower than the elite ones, was affordable for middle and high-socio-economic-status families. Such an approach, we conclude, exacerbated existing educational inequalities in Turkey while widening the achievement gap on the university entrance examination between students from different socioeconomic classes. The findings of this study might help educators and policy-makers in the organization of the schooling process at private schools to eliminate educational inequalities while ensuring quality education for all., Bu çalışma, 2014 yılında özel öğretim merkezlerinin, diğer adıyla dershanelerin kapatılmasını ve bunların Temel Lise adı verilen yeni bir özel okula türüne dönüştürülmesini düzenleyen bir eğitim politikası değişikliğinden sonra gölge eğitimin Türkiye'de nasıl daha görünür hale geldiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Araştırma bulguları kavram karikatürleri ile öğrenme yaklaşımının kullanıldığı deney grubu öğrencilerinin, geleneksel öğrenme yönteminin kullanıldığı kontrol grubu öğrencilerine göre derse yönelik daha olumlu tutuma sahip olduğunu göstermiştir., Teaching with concept cartoons is effective in terms of the development of creativity as well as increasing students' interest in understanding concepts. It is considered as a method that encourages students to notice the emerging problems and seek solutions. Concept cartoons are generally considered more suitable for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In Turkey, there are many studies on the effects of the concept of attitude cartoons. This study aims to bring together independent studies on the effect of concept cartoons on the attitude towards the lesson and to analyze the results. Before starting meta-analysis, the criteria for which studies will be included in the meta-analysis were determined. Within the scope of the research, 15 studies that comply with the criteria out of 23 studies published between 2007-2019 were evaluated. All of these 15 studies were carried out in Turkey. Collected data were analyzed by the meta-analysis method. In the study, a random-effects model was preferred in calculating the effect size, taking into account the heterogeneity test results. According to the results of the research, as a result of the analysis made according to the random-effects model, the average effect size value was found to be significant at 95% confidence interval (Z = 5,262). The average effect size value was found to be 0.345 and positive. The results obtained are that concept cartoons have a positive and small effect on students' attitudes towards the lesson compared to traditional teaching methods. It was understood that the effect sizes did not differ significantly according to the course areas, geographical region, education levels, and application periods. The research findings showed that the experimental group students in which the learning approach was used with concept cartoons had a more positive attitude towards the lesson than the control group students where the traditional learning method was used.

Nemaline myopathy is a rare hereditary neuromuscular disease characterized by variable degree of non-progressive or slowly progressive generalized muscle weakness. Clinical features are mostly related with muscle weakness and hypotonia. Patients may present with birth asphyxia as a result of severe hypotonia. Respiratory insufficiency and feeding difficulty develop eventually in the majority of cases. Narrow and elongated face, high arched palate, pectus excavatum, scoliosis, foot deformi-ties, and joint contractures may also be present. Definite diagnosis of Nemaline myopathy is possible by a muscle biopsy in which modified Gomori-trichrome stain indicates the presence of purple-red colored rod-like structures called “nemaline bodies” in the muscle fibers. Here a newborn who pre-sented with birth asphyxia and diagnosed as nemaline myopathy with muscle biopsy is reported and discussed in the light of literature.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of certain background variables (gender, attending student club, newspaper reading, home residence, level of mother education, and level of father education) on university students’ level of civic engagement in university setting. The study also aimed to explore if there were any significant differences among the three dimensions of civic engagement: students’ activism, exercising rights, and interest in politics. The study employed causal comparative design and the sample involved 1074 undergraduate students who were selected by stratified sampling from all faculties of a Turkish public university. The data were collected by a self-developed Civic Engagement Scale and analyzed by Two-Way MANOVA and One-Way Repeated ANOVA analyses. One-Way Repeated ANOVA results indicated that there was a significant difference between the mean scores of three dimensions of civic engagement. More specifically, the level of students’ activism was significantly lower than the level of students’ exercising their rights and the level of their interest in politics. On the other hand, there was no significant difference between the level of students’ exercising their rights and interest in politics. Moreover, Two-Way MANOVA results showed that all selected variables had a significant effect on the three dimensions of students’ civic engagement.

The aim of this study is to examine the perceptions of students on the implementation of life sciences curriculum through using creative drama sessions. Eighty seven 2nd and 3rd grade students from an elementary school in one of the districts of Ankara participated in the study. Data were collected through employing four different creative drama methods: (a) letters, (b) drawings, (c) improvisations, and (d) still images of students. Content analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data collected in drama sessions. The findings indicated that the teachers had a role of knowledge transmitter to a group of passive students in life sciences classrooms. The most frequently used teaching methods were lecturing, question-answer, and demonstration through using textbooks, workbooks, and white boards. In addition, the most frequently used assessment methods were essay and oral exams, classroom observations, and self-assessment. Besides, it emerged that students prefer group work and animation rather than typing. The affluence and diversity of collected data in this study showed that as an art-based qualitative research method, creative drama was a quite effective method in revealing intimate opinions of young children., Bu nitel çalışmada hayat bilgisi derslerinin işlenişinin öğrenci gözüyle yaratıcı drama oturumları kullanılarak incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. The purpose of this study is to analyze the educational policies of Turkey in Central Asia and Caucasia in the post-Soviet era in terms of their successes and failures as perceived by some of the relevant professional policy makers in this field as well as experts from various think-tank institutions in Turkey who are interested in the region. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 participants. The findings indicated that Turkey's educational polices in the Turkic republics of Central Asia and Caucasia since 1991 have provided certain benefits for both Turkey and these republics, despite the fact that there are important problems that need urgent solutions.

This exploratory study examines the background characteristics, socio-cultural values and pedagogical beliefs that entering student teachers bring with them into the faculties of education and explores their possible implications for teacher education in the Turkish context. The study comprised 18,226 first-year student teachers from 51 faculties of education who participated in the study by responding to a three-section questionnaire developed by the research team. Their responses indicate that students entering education faculties typically come from families of lower-middle socio-economic status living in urban areas, tend to possess more traditional than secular-rational values and have not yet formed clear pedagogical beliefs.

This study estimates the individual and combined effects of selected family, student and school characteristics on the academic achievement of poor, urban primary-school students in the Turkish context. Participants of the study consisted of 719 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade primary-school students from 23 schools in inner and outer city squatter settlements. The findings indicated that the set of variables comprising student characteristics, including well-being at school, scholastic activities and support, explained the largest amount of variance in academic achievement among the urban poor. Although the effect sizes are small, family background characteristics and school quality indicators were also found to be significantly related to academic achievement. The implications of this study for improving primary schools in urban poor neighborhoods are discussed.

We propose a unique cluster-based retrieval (CBR) strategy using a new cluster-skipping inverted file for improving query processing efficiency. The new inverted file incorporates cluster membership and centroid information along with the usual document information into a single structure. In our incremental-CBR strategy, during query evaluation, both best(-matching) clusters and the best(-matching) documents of such clusters are computed together with a single posting-list access per query term. As we switch from term to term, the best clusters are recomputed and can dynamically change. During query-document matching, only relevant portions of the posting lists corresponding to the best clusters are considered and the rest are skipped. The proposed approach is essentially tailored for environments where inverted files are compressed, and provides substantial efficiency improvement while yielding comparable, or sometimes better, effectiveness figures. Our experiments with various collections show that the incremental-CBR strategy using a compressed cluster-skipping inverted file significantly improves CPU time efficiency, regardless of query length. The new compressed inverted file imposes an acceptable storage overhead in comparison to a typical inverted file. We also show that our approach scales well with the collection size.

In spatial networks, clustering adjacent data to disk pages is highly likely to reduce the number of disk page accesses made by the aggregate network operations during query processing. For this purpose, different techniques based on the clustering graph model are proposed in the literature. In this work, we show that the state-of-the-art clustering graph model is not able to correctly capture the disk access costs of aggregate network operations. Moreover, we propose a novel clustering hypergraph model that correctly captures the disk access costs of these operations. The proposed model aims to minimize the total number of disk page accesses in aggregate network operations. Based on this model, we further propose two adaptive recursive bipartitioning schemes to reduce the number of allocated disk pages while trying to minimize the number of disk page accesses. We evaluate our clustering hypergraph model and recursive bipartitioning schemes on a wide range of road network datasets. The results of the conducted experiments show that the proposed model is quite effective in reducing the number of disk accesses incurred by the network operations. © 2007 Elsevier B.V.
