New products are expected to be available for the meteorological community, as a consequence of the inclusion of full set of improvements and new capabilities in Metosat Third Generation (MTG). Among others, as it is well known, better spatial, temporal and radiometric resolutions, lightning image data and so on. In this paper, a preliminary analysis of MTG products and services is carried out, considering new opportunities for operational meteorology at local level, and particularly for a regional meteorology service such as the Basque Meteorology Agency (Euskalmet). In this work, a preliminary analysis about new horizons that MTG will offer to us is presented. Focusing on usability and those aspects more relevant, from our perspective, in the side of operational meteorology services at a regional-local level. We have summarized how MTG new products and capabilities could affect actual processes and operations in the short and mid-term future, focusing on different operational tasks that today are fully or partially based on MSG, as severe weather surveillance and monitoring, decision making support systems, numerical weather prediction, short term forecast and nowcasting, analysis tools, climatology and other fields that could be benefit directly or indirectly from the operational use of MTG.

Prolonged neurotransmitter release following synaptic stimulation extends the time window for postsynaptic neurons to respond to presynaptic activity. This can enhance excitability and increase synchrony of outputs, but the prevalence of this at normally highly synchronous synapses is unclear. We show that the postsynaptic channel, pannexin-1 (Panx1) regulates prolonged glutamate release onto CA1 neurons. Block of postsynaptic (CA1 neuronal) Panx1 increased the frequency of glutamate neurotransmission and action potentials in these neurons following Schaffer collateral stimulation. When Panx1 was blocked, anandamide levels increase and activated transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1)-mediated glutamate release. This TRPV1-induced synaptic acitvity enhanced excitability and translated into a faster rate of TRPV1-dependent epileptogenesis induced by kindling. We conclude that Panx1 facilitates AEA clearance to maintain synchronous release onto CA1 neurons so that when AEA clearance is reduced, TRPV1 channels prolong glutamate neurotransmission to enhance network output to promote epileptiform activity.

Insufficient vascularization is considered to be one of the main factors limiting the clinical success of tissue-engineered constructs. In order to evaluate new strategies that aim at improving vascularization, reliable methods are required to make the in-growth of new blood vessels into bio-artificial scaffolds visible and quantify the results. Over the past couple of years, our group has introduced a full skin defect model that enables the direct visualization of blood vessels by transillumination and provides the possibility of quantification through digital segmentation. In this model, one surgically creates full skin defects in the back of mice and replaces them with the material tested. Molecules or cells of interest can also be incorporated in such materials to study their potential effect. After an observation time of one’s own choice, materials are explanted for evaluation. Bilateral wounds provide the possibility of making internal comparisons that minimize artifacts among individuals as well as of decreasing the number of animals needed for the study. In comparison to other approaches, our method offers a simple, reliable and cost effective analysis. We have implemented this model as a routine tool to perform high-resolution screening when testing vascularization of different biomaterials and bio-activation approaches.
