BACKGROUND There is widespread recognition and acceptance of the need for critical thinking in nursing education, as it is necessary to provide high-quality nursing. The Technology-Supported Guidance Model (TSGM) intervention was conducted during clinical practice among undergraduate nursing students and aimed to support the development of critical thinking. A major element of this newly developed intervention is an app, Technology-Optimized Practice Process in Nursing (TOPP‑N), combined with the daily guidance of nursing students from nurse preceptors and summative assessments based on the Assessment of Clinical Education. OBJECTIVE The main objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of a newly developed intervention, TSGM, among undergraduate nursing students, nurse preceptors, and nurse educators. Further objectives were to assess the primary and secondary outcome measures, recruitment strategy, and data collection strategy and to identify the potential causes of dropout and barriers to participant recruitment, retention, intervention fidelity, and adherence to the intervention. METHODS This study was designed as a concurrent, exploratory, flexible, and multimethod feasibility study of the TSGM intervention that included quantitative and qualitative data from nursing students, nurse preceptors, and nurse educators. The primary outcome measures were the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention. The secondary outcomes included the suitability and acceptance of the outcome measures (critical thinking, self-efficacy, clinical learning environment, metacognition and self-regulation, technology acceptance, and competence of mentors); data collection strategy; recruitment strategy; challenges related to dropouts; and hindrances to recruitment, retention, and intervention fidelity and adherence. RESULTS Nursing students, nurse preceptors, and nurse educators had varied experiences with the TSGM intervention. We identified factors that make the intervention feasible and challenging and may influence the feasibility, acceptability, dropout rate, adherence, and fidelity of the intervention. We also identified areas for future improvement of the intervention. CONCLUSIONS The use of a newly developed intervention, TSGM, is feasible and accepted by undergraduate nursing students, nurse preceptors, and nurse educators; however, refinement and improvement of the intervention and the TOPP‑N app, improvement in intervention management, and mitigation of negative factors are necessary before a randomized controlled trial can be performed. To monitor infection by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) and successful vaccination against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19), the kinetics of neutralizing or blocking anti‐SARS‐CoV‐2 antibody titers need to be assessed. Here, we report the development of a quick and inexpensive surrogate SARS‐CoV‐2 blocking assay (SUBA) using immobilized recombinant human angiotensin‐converting enzyme 2 (hACE2) and human cells expressing the native form of surface SARS‐CoV‐2 spike protein. Spike protein‐expressing cells bound to hACE2 in the absence or presence of blocking antibodies were quantified by measuring the optical density of cell‐associated crystal violet in a spectrophotometer. The advantages are that SUBA is a fast and inexpensive assay, which does not require biosafety level 2‐ or 3‐approved laboratories. Most importantly, SUBA detects blocking antibodies against the native trimeric cell‐bound SARS‐CoV‐2 spike protein and can be rapidly adjusted to quickly pre‐screen already approved therapeutic antibodies or sera from vaccinated individuals for their ACE2 blocking activities against any emerging SARS‐CoV‐2 variants., A simple, inexpensive surrogate SARS‐CoV‐2 neutralization assay is introduced. Ectopic expression of the SARS‐CoV‐2 spike protein confers binding of Ramos‐Ig ‐ or HEK293 cells to plate‐bound recombinant human angiotensin‐converting‐enzyme‐2. This interaction can be blocked with reconvalescent or immune serum or with anti‐receptor‐binding domain antibodies. Bound spike‐expressing cells are quantitated with crystal violet.

Early identification and follow-up of sub-acute and acute functional decline in older persons living with multimorbidity at home require integrated and proactive care by interdisciplinary health personnel. Yet, in the context of the task-oriented and fragmented home healthcare services, early identification is challenging. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify preconditions for the success of a proactive and interdisciplinary follow-up of older recipients of home healthcare. We conducted a qualitative secondary analysis of data from 6 focus group interviews with registered nurses and nurse leaders. In addition, we performed and analyzed data from 2 new focus group interviews with general practitioners and RNs who had a role as super users in a developmental project which introduced a clinical instrument for early identification of sub-acute and acute functional decline (sub-acute functional decline in the elderly—SAFE). Their experiences with using SAFE constituted the backdrop for the study. In total, 41 representatives of the interprofessional primary care staff of 3 city districts participated. Having a common goal, sharing tasks and having reciprocal understanding of each health profession’s contribution, systems and tools and clinical leadership were all seen as important factors for succeeding in the proactive and interdisciplinary follow-up of older recipients of home healthcare. Clinical leadership was deemed the strongest precondition, and clear leadership which promotes integrative and proactive care by facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration appears to be the main key for success.

The processes leading from disturbed B cell development to adult B cell progenitor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL) are poorly understood. Here, we describe Irf4−/− mice as prone to developing BCP-ALL with age. Irf4−/− preB-I cells exhibited impaired differentiation but enhanced proliferation in response to IL-7, along with reduced retention in the IL-7 providing bone marrow niche due to decreased CXCL12 responsiveness. Thus selected, preB-I cells acquired Jak3 mutations, probably following irregular AID activity, resulting in malignant transformation. We demonstrate heightened IL-7 sensitivity due to Jak3 mutants, devise a model to explain it and describe structural and functional similarities to Jak2 mutations often occurring in human Ph-like ALL. Finally, targeting JAK signaling with Ruxolitinib in vivo prolonged survival of mice bearing established Irf4−/− leukemia. Intriguingly, organ infiltration including leukemic meningeosis was selectively reduced without affecting blood blast counts. In this work, we present spontaneous leukemogenesis following IRF4 deficiency with potential implications for high-risk BCP-ALL in adult humans.

Effective vaccines and monoclonal antibodies have been developed against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, the appearance of virus variants with higher transmissibility and pathogenicity is a major concern because of their potential to escape vaccines and clinically approved SARS-CoV-2- antibodies. Here, we use flow cytometry-based binding and pseudotyped SARS-CoV-2 neutralization assays to determine the efficacy of boost immunization and therapeutic antibodies to neutralize the dominant Omicron variant. We provide compelling evidence that the third vaccination with BNT162b2 increases the amount of neutralizing serum antibodies against Delta and Omicron variants, albeit to a lower degree when compared to the parental Wuhan strain. Therefore, a third vaccination is warranted to increase titers of protective serum antibodies, especially in the case of the Omicron variant. We also found that most clinically approved and otherwise potent therapeutic antibodies against the Delta variant failed to recognize and neutralize the Omicron variant. In contrast, some antibodies under preclinical development potentially neutralized the Omicron variant. Our studies also support using a flow cytometry-based antibody binding assay to rapidly monitor therapeutic candidates and serum titers against emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants.

BACKGROUND Nursing education has increasingly focused on critical thinking among nursing students, as critical thinking is a desired outcome of nursing education. Particular attention is given to the potential of technological tools in guiding nursing students to stimulate the development of critical thinking; however, the general landscape, facilitators, and challenges of these guidance models remain unexplored, and no previous mixed methods systematic review on the subject has been identified. OBJECTIVE This study aims to synthesize existing evidence on technology-supported guidance models used in nursing education to stimulate the development of critical thinking in nursing students in clinical practice. METHODS This mixed methods systematic review adopted a convergent, integrated design to facilitate thematic synthesis. This study followed the guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute Manual for Evidence Synthesis. RESULTS We identified 3 analytical themes: learning processes implemented to stimulate critical thinking, organization of the learning process to stimulate critical thinking, and factors influencing the perception of the learning process. We also identified 4 guidance models, all based on facilitator or preceptorship models using tailored instructional or learning strategies and one or several technological tools that were either generic or custom-made for specific outcomes. The main facilitators of these technology-supported guidance models were nurse educators or nurse preceptors, and the main challenges in using technology-supported guidance models were the stress associated with technical difficulties or increased cognitive load. CONCLUSIONS Although we were able to identify 4 technology-supported guidance models, our results indicate a research gap regarding the use of these models in nursing education, with the specific aim of stimulating the development of critical thinking. Both nurse preceptors and nurse educators play a crucial role in the development of critical thinking among nursing students, and technology is essential for such development. This paper answers a call from Nordic colleagues for new strategies in education to meet the needs of a new generation of bachelor nursing students regarding the development of clinical skills. We, as they, believe that educational models targeting the development of clinical skills must be customised to meet the learning style of the current and future generations of bachelor nursing students. In this paper we put forward that using a comprehensive, collaborative, student-centred approach will assist younger generations’ learning processes. We describe a pedagogical model of peer learning that combines collaboration, reflection and assessment aligned with learning outcomes. Such an approach, we believe, is likely to be in line with expectations, needs and preconditions of the current and future generations of nursing students.

IntroductionOlder people receiving healthcare in long-term care contexts (eg, home healthcare, sheltered housing and nursing home contexts) are especially vulnerable to developing frailty and functional decline. Considering the negative effects associated with these conditions and the possibility of preventing them from progressing, it is vital that nurses possess a broad knowledge base related to them. Particularly as prevention related to these conditions lies well within their remit. Such knowledge could guide the development of effective models of care, ensuring continuity and, hence, quality of care. Our objective will be to review published literature on existing models of care targeting frailty and/or functional decline and how these conditions are described by older people themselves, significant others and nurses in relation to long-term care.Methods and analysisThe scoping review will be conducted in accordance with Arksey and O’Malley’s methodological framework. Recent methodological developments will be considered. PubMed, CINAHL and PsycINFO will be searched. Eligibility criteria will be peer-reviewed papers and written in English. All types of study designs will be eligible and included papers will be quality and ethically assessed. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA)-Protocol checklist for protocols and the PRISMA for Scoping Reviews checklist were followed in this paper.Ethics and disseminationAs the study outlined in this protocol is a scoping review, no ethics approval was needed for this protocol nor for the upcoming study. The findings will be published in an open-access, peer-reviewed journal. Additionally, the findings will guide a research project following the Medical Research Council’s framework for developing and evaluating complex interventions. Thus, supporting us in developing a model of care related to the detection and prevention of frailty and/or functional decline among older people in a long-term care context.

TRIANNI mice carry an entire set of human immunoglobulin V region gene segments and are a powerful tool to rapidly isolate human monoclonal antibodies. After immunizing these mice with DNA encoding the spike protein of SARS‐CoV‐2 and boosting with spike protein, we identified 29 hybridoma antibodies that reacted with the SARS‐CoV‐2 spike protein. Nine antibodies neutralize SARS‐CoV‐2 infection at IC50 values in the subnanomolar range. ELISA‐binding studies and DNA sequence analyses revealed one cluster of three clonally related neutralizing antibodies that target the receptor‐binding domain and compete with the cellular receptor hACE2. A second cluster of six clonally related neutralizing antibodies bind to the N‐terminal domain of the spike protein without competing with the binding of hACE2 or cluster 1 antibodies. SARS‐CoV‐2 mutants selected for resistance to an antibody from one cluster are still neutralized by an antibody from the other cluster. Antibodies from both clusters markedly reduced viral spread in mice transgenic for human ACE2 and protected the animals from SARS‐CoV‐2‐induced weight loss. The two clusters of potent non‐competing SARS‐CoV‐2 neutralizing antibodies provide potential candidates for therapy and prophylaxis of COVID‐19. The study further supports transgenic animals with a human immunoglobulin gene repertoire as a powerful platform in pandemic preparedness initiatives. This article is protected by copyright. IntroductionWhat nurses do and how they do it can influence older people’s experiences of the quality of long-term care. In addition, a clear role definition for nurses supports them in giving patients appropriate basic care. Despite this, there is a lack of a clear role definition regarding policy, work descriptions and expectations. Therefore, the objective of this scoping review is to map the literature on nurses’ role, function and care activities and/or nursing interventions, as well as to identify nursing interventions (as models of nursing care, patient care pathways and/or clinical practice guidelines) in relation to older people in long-term care. Hence, to explore how nurse’s role, function and care activities in relation to older people’s basic care needs are described and understood by key stakeholders (older people, their next of kin, nurses) in long-term care.Methods and analysisArksey and O’Malley’s methodologic framework for scoping studies will be used for this upcoming scoping review. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews checklist will be followed. Search strategies will be developed in collaboration with the research team and an experienced librarian. Search strategies will be adjusted for each of the databases: PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL and Scopus. Data will be charted using a pilot extraction sheet. Quantitative data will be described numerically, and qualitative data will be analysed using thematic analysis. The key stakeholders will be consulted for validation.Ethics and disseminationThe upcoming study will follow All European Academies' principles for good research. The findings will be used to inform the design of future studies aiming to develop a nursing intervention targeting older peoples’ basic care needs.

IntroductionKnowledge about long-term care services ability, regardless of if the service is home-based or facility-based, to provide an optimal and comprehensive fundamental nursing care (understood as focusing on physical, relational and psychosocial needs) consistently over time is sparse. Research into nursing indicates the presence of a discontinuous and fragmented healthcare service, and that fundamental nursing care such as mobilisation, nutrition and hygiene among older people (65 years and above) seems to be, regardless of reasons, systematically rationed by nursing staff. Thus, our scoping review aims to explore the published scientific literature on fundamental nursing care and continuity of care targeting older people’s needs while also describing identified nursing interventions with the same foci in a long-term care context.Methods and analysisThe upcoming scoping review will be conducted in accordance with Arksey and O’Malley’s methodological framework for scoping studies. Search strategies will be developed and adjusted to each database, for example, PubMed, CINAHL and PsychINFO. Searches will be limited to the years 2002–2023. Studies focusing our aim, regardless of study design, will be eligible for inclusion. Included studies will be quality assessed and data will be charted using an extraction form. Textual data will be presented through a thematic analysis and numerical data by a descriptive numerical analysis. This protocol adheres to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses protocol checklist.Ethics and disseminationThe upcoming scoping review will take into consideration ethical reporting in primary research as part of the quality assessment. The findings will be submitted to an open-access peer-reviewed journal. Under the Norwegian Act on Medical and Health-related Research, this study does not need ethical clearance by a regional ethical review authority as it will not generate any primary data or obtain sensitive data or biological samples.

The systemic processes involved in the manifestation of life-threatening COVID-19 and in disease recovery are still incompletely understood, despite investigations focusing on the dysregulation of immune responses after SARS-CoV-2 infection. To define hallmarks of severe COVID-19 in acute disease (n = 58) and in disease recovery in convalescent patients (n = 28) from Hannover Medical School, we used flow cytometry and proteomics data with unsupervised clustering analyses. In our observational study, we combined analyses of immune cells and cytokine/chemokine networks with endothelial activation and injury. ICU patients displayed an altered immune signature with prolonged lymphopenia but the expansion of granulocytes and plasmablasts along with activated and terminally differentiated T and NK cells and high levels of SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies. The core signature of seven plasma proteins revealed a highly inflammatory microenvironment in addition to endothelial injury in severe COVID-19. Changes within this signature were associated with either disease progression or recovery. In summary, our data suggest that besides a strong inflammatory response, severe COVID-19 is driven by endothelial activation and barrier disruption, whereby recovery depends on the regeneration of the endothelial integrity.

Viral mutations are an emerging concern in reducing SARS-CoV-2 vaccination efficacy. Second generation vaccines will need to elicit neutralizing antibodies against sites that are evolutionarily conserved across the sarbecovirus subgenus. Here, we immunized mice containing a human antibody repertoire with diverse sarbecovirus receptor binding domains (RBDs) to identify antibodies targeting conserved sites of vulnerability. Antibodies with broad reactivity against diverse clade B RBDs targeting the conserved class 4 epitope, with recurring IGHV/IGKV pairs, were readily elicited but were non-neutralizing. However, rare class 4 antibodies binding this conserved RBD supersite showed potent neutralization of SARS-CoV-2 and all variants of concern. Structural analysis revealed that neutralizing ability of cross-reactive antibodies was reserved only for those with an elongated CDRH3 that extends the antiparallel beta-sheet RBD core and orients the antibody light chain to obstruct ACE2-RBD interactions. BACKGROUND Critical thinking is an essential set of skills in nursing education, and nursing education therefore needs a sharper focus on effective ways to support the development of these skills, especially through the implementation of technological tools in nursing education. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study protocol is to assess the feasibility of a technology-supported guidance model grounded in the metacognition theory for nursing students in clinical practice. METHODS Both quantitative (research questionnaires) and qualitative (focus group interviews) approaches will be used to collect data for a feasibility study with an exploratory, flexible mixed methods design to test a newly developed intervention in clinical practice. RESULTS The intervention development was completed in December 2020. The intervention will be tested in 3 independent nursing homes in Norway. CONCLUSIONS By determining the feasibility of a technology-supported guidance model for nursing students in clinical practice, the results will provide information on the acceptability of the intervention and the suitability of the outcome measures and data collection strategy. The study further supports the use of transgenic animals with human immunoglobulin gene repertoires in pandemic preparedness initiatives.

How disturbances of B cell development provoke adult B acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) remains poorly understood. Here we describe Irf4–/– mice as prone to developing B-ALL with age. Irf4–/– pro/preB cells exhibited impaired differentiative but enhanced proliferative potential in vitro and accumulated in spleens of healthy Irf4–/– mice, suggesting reduced adherence to the IL-7 providing bone marrow niche. Thus selected, pro/preB cells transformed acquiring proliferative IL-7 independency through Jak3 gain-of-function mutations. Targeting JAK signaling with Ruxolitinib in vivo prolonged survival of mice bearing established Irf4–/– leukemia. Intriguingly, organ infiltration including leukemic meningeosis was selectively reduced without affecting blood blast counts. As low IRF4 expression and JAK3 mutations also characterize a subpopulation of Ph-like B-ALL in adult humans, our results imply Irf4–/– mice as a suitable model for investigating preleukemic conditions in adults. Using this model, we identified an unexpected effect of Ruxolitinib treatment in B-ALL.

Background Critical thinking is an essential set of skills in nursing education, and nursing education therefore needs a sharper focus on effective ways to support the development of these skills, especially through the implementation of technological tools in nursing education. Objective The aim of this study protocol is to assess the feasibility of a technology-supported guidance model grounded in the metacognition theory for nursing students in clinical practice. Methods Both quantitative (research questionnaires) and qualitative (focus group interviews) approaches will be used to collect data for a feasibility study with an exploratory, flexible mixed methods design to test a newly developed intervention in clinical practice. Results The intervention development was completed in December 2020. The intervention will be tested in 3 independent nursing homes in Norway. Conclusions By determining the feasibility of a technology-supported guidance model for nursing students in clinical practice, the results will provide information on the acceptability of the intervention and the suitability of the outcome measures and data collection strategy. Long-lived antibody-secreting plasma cells are essential to establish humoral memory against pathogens. While a regulatory transcription factor network has been established in plasma cell differentiation, the regulatory role of miRNAs remains enigmatic. We have recently identified miR-148a as the most abundant miRNA in primary mouse and human plasma cells. To determine whether this plasma cell signature miRNA controls the in vivo development of B cells into long-lived plasma cells, we established mice with genomic, conditional, and inducible deletions of miR-148a. The analysis of miR-148a-deficient mice revealed reduced serum Ig, decreased numbers of newly formed plasmablasts and reduced CD19-negative, CD93-positive long-lived plasma cells. Transcriptome and metabolic analysis revealed an impaired glucose uptake, a reduced oxidative phosphorylation-based energy metabolism, and an altered abundance of homing receptors CXCR3 (increase) and CXCR4 (reduction) in miR-148a-deficient plasma cells. These findings support the role of miR-148a as a positive regulator of the maintenance of long-lived plasma cells.

Background Nurses are the key professionals in the introduction, implementation, and use of technology in clinical practice. A lack of technical expertise and technological understanding poses a challenge to the quality of health services and possibly to the safety, dignity, and quality of life of patients. Therefore, possessing technological literacy upon completing nursing baccalaureate studies is essential. However, no previous scoping review has mapped the existing studies of technological literacy in nursing education. Objectives To map and assess the published studies on technological literacy in nursing education and to identify how educational institutions operationalize, teach, measure, and maintain students' technological literacy throughout their educational programs. Design A scoping review was conducted using the methodological framework of Arksey and O'Malley. The reporting was guided by the PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews. Methods A comprehensive systematic search of the MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, ERIC, and CINAHL was performed for studies published from January 2008 through March 2020. Two authors independently assessed eligibility and extracted data. The reference lists of the included studies were also examined. Results The review included 28 papers from 27 studies. Three thematic groupings with their respective subgroups were identified among the included papers: 1) the acquisition (simulated electronic documentation, diversified learning methods, and evaluation learning focus), 2) the measurement (digital/computer literacy/competence, nursing informatics competence, technology acceptance, and students' interests and preferences in technology), and 3) the maintenance (follow-up evaluation) of technological knowledge and skills. Conclusions Pedagogical models designed to teach an entire process for the acquisition, measurement, and maintenance of technological literacy are lacking. Studies are needed that bring technological competencies to a higher level, including problem-solving and critical thinking. Educators' competencies should be enhanced. Educational institutions need to ensure the readiness of future nurses for a technology-enriched environment by providing the necessary knowledge in technological literacy. “Tweetable abstract” Due to the importance of technological literacy to the nursing profession, educational institutions must ensure that it is taught to nursing students.

This paper presents the protocol for a randomized controlled trial aimed at studying the effects of a technology-supported guidance model delivered by smartphone and intended to strengthen the follow-up of nursing students during their clinical practicum. The research outcomes will reflect students’ critical thinking, learning outcomes, and satisfaction. The results will be compared before and after the intervention and between control and intervention groups. In the control group, the clinical practicum period will be performed as usual. In the intervention group, students will monitor their day by filling in daily electronic reports. Based on students’ reports and the day’s experience, the nurse preceptor will give a feedback to the students. A process evaluation will measure fidelity and potential for scale-up.

Background The Public Health Intervention Wheel (PHIW) is a population-based practice model that encompasses three levels of practice (community, systems, and individual/family) and 17 public health interventions. Each intervention and practice level contributes to improving population health. Public health nurses (PHNs) provide care at the three levels of practice. Prevention of falls is a public health issue and the majority of falls happen at home. Therefore, prevention and management of falls in the community could benefit from a public health systems approach by PHNs underpinned by the PHIW. Case presentation A hypothetical case is presented of a 78-year-old gentleman who had a fall which resulted in a fractured right acetabulum and surgery before being discharged home. Methods The aim of this paper was to use a case summary to illustrate PHN practice in the context of the PHIW as applied to falls management and prevention. This paper focuses on fall incidence and PHN response in Ireland and Norway. The PHIW is described and relevant interventions from the PHIW are applied to PHN practice in managing the case. Conclusions The PHIW model provides insight into the potential scope of public health nursing in falls, articulating PHN practice in the community.

Research on the digital divide has moved beyond connectivity to skills and usage disparities. Yet for many older people lack of connectivity remains a challenge, and for those who do have access, skills and usage remain an issue. We report findings of an in-depth qualitative study of older people's perceptions of online communications and also their actual experiences. Findings indicate that older people who are already socially well connected benefit from online communication more than those who are not. Purpose To present an emerging innovative care model that supports participation and thriving by older adults in residential care, by introduction to new technology and mobilizing volunteer services. Design Qualitative, exploratory study, introducing tablet computers to 15 older adults in two municipalities. Methods The intervention encompassed weekly workshops over the course of 1 year with volunteer adolescents as personal tutors. Observations of workshops, interviews with nurses, and repeated semistructured interviews with older adult participants eliciting their perspective on use, experiences, perceived usefulness, and overall evaluation of the intervention. Findings A model of four components is suggested to support participation and thriving by older adults in residential care: (a) simplified tools: iPad—technology relatively easy to use; (b) person-centered process: one-to-one tutoring following each individual's own pace; (c) young volunteers to teach technology, establishing an intergenerational arena; and (d) being mindful of driving forces that encourage use and learning. We found that all kinds of use and all levels of mastery generated a sense of pride that supported thriving and enjoyment. Conclusions These findings support the use of new technology and use of volunteer services for sustaining thriving in older adults. The person-centered approach stimulates use of the tablet, and participants showed enjoyment, more social participation, and reported subjective experiences of thriving. Clinical Relevance Innovative models of care that prevent (or postpone) functional decline and support thriving in older adults are highly sought after in health care. A model that systematically involves volunteer services comes with potentials to alleviate nurses’ workload, and then the intervention is seen as a manageable and low-cost initiative in residential care.

The study explored how 125 older patients and 92 next of kin experienced and assessed continuity in long-term home health care. Data were collected by means of structured interviews. A majority of the patients indicated that having a high number of health care personnel involved in their care was not problematic. For patients, informed and skilled health personnel along with knowing the visiting personnel may compensate for a high number of personnel. For next of kin, accepting a high number of personnel was related to the carers being informed about the patient’s situation. This study indicates that, in terms of patient satisfaction, the overall quality of care is more important than the number of people providing the care.

The study explores how older adults with limited digital experience become users of tablet computers (iPad) with Internet access, and how the tablet computers become part of their daily life facilitating active aging and thriving. Volunteer adolescents were mobilised to teach and follow up the participants regularly.

We provide a robust four-color fluorescence-based flow cytometry protocol that distinguishes viable dividing plasmablasts from nondividing plasma cells and, based on CD19 surface abundance, identifies two mature plasma cell populations in the spleen and the bone marrow of mice.

Rapporten presenterer ny kunnskap om betydningen av sykepleiermangel og faglig oppfølging for hvordan pasienter og pårørende opplever kvalitet i tjenestene, pasientsikkerhet og livskvalitet. Studien belyser disse forholdene ved hjelp av tre komplementære delprosjekter. Første del gir en kunnskapsoppsummering av norsk og internasjonal forskning om sykepleierbemanning og kvalitet i eldreomsorgen. Andre del er en kvalitativ studie med dybdeintervjuer av ti pårørende. På grunnlag av et rikt intervjumateriale identifiserte vi tre overordnete fortellinger: «et sykehjem med høy kvalitet», «et greit nok sykehjem» og «et sykehjem med lav kvalitet». Tredje del er analyser av en spørreundersøkelse blant 602 pårørende og brukere av hjemmesykepleien (over 67 år). I flere av analysene fant vi en sammenheng mellom manglende sykepleier-bemanning og utilstrekkelig faglig oppfølging på tilfreds-het med tjenestene og forekomst av uheldige hendelser.
