For more than a century, students and higher education leaders, practitioners, and scholars have imagined and implemented strategies to subvert racism and advocate for racial equity within U.S. higher education. However, racist campus climates and exclusionary practices persist because institutions of higher education themselves are structurally rooted in whiteness and white supremacy. In this chapter, the authors connect their social and political subjectivities as white scholars with their dedication to the dismantling of structures of whiteness within higher education in order to present one way to transform institutions. Through the presentation of theoretical and practical examples, they make the case that it is the shared responsibility of white leaders across the spectrum of higher education to take action against the racialized policies and norms that privilege white people by examining and abolishing institutional structures that support whiteness. Ultimately, the fight for equity and justice in higher education must center the challenging of structural manifestations of whiteness.

The author discusses his relationship with Nathaniel Branden from several perspectives, as client, intern, professional associate, and friend. As a client of Branden's, he provides firsthand documentation of his experiences, which illuminates some of the important contributions Branden brought to the field of psychology. Among the “six pillars” Branden identified as the foundation of a healthy self-esteem, the author focuses primarily on self-acceptance. He further explores Branden's eclectic array of therapeutic tools, including sentence completions, sub-personality work, and experimental Energy Psychology. The author credits Branden for having a huge impact on his psychological and intellectual development.

We study the segregation of spherical particles of different diameters in moving beds i.e. steady-state dense-phase flows of granular solids. The transients typical of, for instance, hopper discharge are absent. Such flows often occur in vessels in which a fluid flows, either co-currently or counter-currently to the particles, which themselves move vertically downwards under gravity. They are widely used in industry in applications such as continuous catalyst regeneration reactors and blast furnaces.

The administration of prostaglandin vaginally to 15 pregnant patients in the first trimester caused abortion in 73% of the cases. Although other regimens have been reported to be effective and well tolerated, the single 3 mg. suppository of 15(S)-15-methyl prostaglandin F2 alpha (methyl ester) utilized in the present study was associated with a significant incidence of side effects and a relatively high failure rate. However, if an analogue or improved treatment regimen could be found which is more efficient, as well as more pleasant in its affects, the availability and the cost of early abortion would be improved with a concomitant effect on the incidence of late abortion and its complications. The efficacy of 15(S)-15-methyl-prostaglandin F2 alpha (methyl ester) as a first trimester abortifacient was studied when delivered via vaginal suppository in 15 women. Each patient received 1 vaginal suppository containing 3 mg of the methyl ester and each was closely observed for the following 10 hours. Rate of complete abortion as demonstrated by examination and negative pregnancy tests 2 weeks postadministration of the suppository was 73%; 27% of the cases were judged to have had incomplete abortions. These incomplete aborters were completed by suction or regular curettage. 13% of patients showed a moderate decrease in systolic and diastolic pressure. 93% of women started to bleed within 10 hours; blood loss estimate averaged 41.5 ml. Diarrhea was the main side effect, occurring in 73% of cases, whereas 47% suffered up to 3 episodes of vomiting. Though failure rate and side effects were too high, it is thought that another analog may overcome these problems.

The general model proposed, which assumes that crack growth plays an important part in the abrasion process when abrasion patterns are produced, is supported by evidence from the behavior of noncrystallizing rubbers. In particular, the rate of movement of the pattern across the surface is closely related to the crack growth behavior. Natural rubber behaves under abrasion conditions as if it were prevented from exhibiting its usual crystallization-enhanced strength. An important factor determining the abrasion rate, in addition to the crack growth behavior, is the angle at which the hypothetical cracks at the pattern base grow. What determines this angle is not yet clear, but it appears to be closely related to the geometry of the pattern, and it seems likely, from a study of this geometry, that much of the loss of rubber occurs from the steeply raked face of the pattern. The pattern spacing, as well as depending on the abrading force, also appears to be influenced by the test temperature and the glass transition temperature of the rubber, suggesting that viscoelastic considerations are important.

Peripheral blood levels of 15-methyl-PGF2α, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and progesterone were determined in patients treated for the induction of menses with a single vaginal suppository containing 3.0 mg 15(S)-15-methyl-PGF2α methyl ester. The mean blood levels of 15-methyl-PGF2α were higher in the successful cases than in the failures or in cases that were defined as partial successes. The plasma level of 15-methyl-PGF2α increased faster in the successful cases than in the failure cases, and was maintained at elevated levels longer in the successful cases than in the partially successful cases. Serum concentrations of hCG declined following treatment in both the successful and unsuccessful cases. At the follow-up visit (approximately 2 weeks after treatment), the level of hCG was significantly lower in the successful cases than in the unsuccessful cases. Serum concentrations of progesterone did not change significantly in any of the groups during the first 10 hr after treatment. However, at the follow-up visit the concentration of progesterone in the successful cases was significantly lower than in the failure cases. A larger percentage of the patients in whom menses was successfully induced had gastrointestinal side effects than patients who were considered treatment failures. This analysis has demonstrated a distinct relationship between blood levels of 15-methyl-PGF2α and the efficacy of these vaginal suppositories for menses induction. The successful induction of menses was associated with a more rapid increase in the plasma concentration of 15-methyl-PGF2α and with mean concentrations of drug that were significantly higher than in the cases that were considered failures. The higher blood levels of drug were also associated with a higher incidence of gastrointestinal side effects. The experience accumulated to date indicates that a vaginal delivery system for 15(S)-15-methyl-PGF2α methyl ester that releases the drug faster and in a more predictable fashion than the vaginal suppository is required for the successful induction of menses.

Colony-site tenacity and nest-site tenacity have been documented in several larids, but the proximate factors affecting fidelity remain poorly understood. We examined the effect of severe breeding-habitat alterations (bulldozing) on site tenacity in Ring-billed Gulls (Larus delawarensis). Return rates of wing-tagged adults were similar in bulldozed and unchanged parts of the colony site. In bulldozed areas, however, most ring-bills abstained from nesting; those that did breed showed an increased tendency to move to a different nest site.

The swelling of natural rubber vulcanizates under equal two-dimensional compression has been investigated. The degree of crosslinking of the vulcanizate and the nature of the swelling liquid have both been varied. The reduction in equilibrium swelling produced by the stresses is found to agree well with theoretical predictions, except for high degrees of swelling. This divergence from theory has been explained on the basis of surface instability, which takes the form of wrinkles of the rubber surface.

A method has been developed using a two-wheeled trailer to obtain accelerated wear data on tires. The method is much quicker than conventional testing, and the results on a test car show good agreement with trailer results. The rate of wear can usually be established to within 5 percent so that small differences between compounds are readily detected. Tests on multi-section tires have been carried out but are not found to be a satisfactory way of increasing reliability. Results are normally presented in the form of a wear rating relative to a control compound, and the data shows that reversals in ranking occur as the conditions of test are changed to cause variations in the tire surface temperature.

Diffusion of various liquids in natural rubber vulcanizates has been studied by following the kinetics of the mass uptake of a rubber sheet immersed in the liquid. An anomaly in the mass uptake-time relation is due to stresses set up in the sheet during swelling and to their variation as swelling proceeds. This anomaly has been eliminated by using specimens constrained laterally, by bonding to metal backing plates, which maintains boundary conditions constant during swelling. At the liquid concentrations used, the diffusion coefficient depends mainly on the liquid viscosity rather than compatibility of the rubber and liquid. Neither amount of carbon black filler nor of crosslinking of the rubber has a significant effect on the diffusion coefficient measured at relatively high liquid concentrations.

The applicability of Hertz's theory of impact to the case of rigid spheres colliding with rubber has been studied over a wide range of impact conditions. In general, the theory is adequate; but in many practical cases, the influence of the finite thickness of the sample is significant. Using previously published data on the influence of thickness on static indentation measurements, this effect can be predicted and good agreement with experiment is found. Resilience measurements have been made over a range of impact conditions. The time of impact, rather than its severity as such, was found to be the factor governing the resilience for the unfilled materials studied, provided that there was no slip of the sample relative to its holder. Slippage can occur if the sample is too thin, due to the shear stresses developed at the rear surface, and this results in the observed resilience being anomalously low.
