1. Network Reconfiguration for an Electric Distribution System with Distributed Generators based on Symbiotic Organisms Search

Abstract

This paper proposes a method of network reconfiguration based on symbiotic organisms search (SOS) algorithm for reducing power loss of the electric distribution system. The SOS is a recent developed meta-heuristic algorithm inspired from the symbiotic interaction strategies of organisms for surviving and propagating in the ecosystem. Compared to other algorithms, SOS does not need any control parameters during the searching process. The advantages of the proposed SOS method have been validated in two electric distribution systems. Three network cases have been considered for each system, consisting of performing network reconfiguration on the system without distributed generator (DG) placement, the system installed type-P DGs and the system installed type-PQ DGs. The comparison results with particle swarm optimization and other previous methods show that the proposed SOS can be a promising technique for the problem of electric network reconfiguration.

Abstract

IMPORTANCE We investigated the variation in neuropsychological function explained by risk alleles at the psychosis susceptibility gene ZNF804A and its interacting partners using single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), polygenic scores, and epistatic analyses. Of particular importance was the relative contribution of the polygenic score vs epistasis in variation explained. OBJECTIVES To (1) assess the association between SNPs in ZNF804A and the ZNF804A polygenic score with measures of cognition in cases with psychosis and (2) assess whether epistasis within the ZNF804A pathway could explain additional variation above and beyond that explained by the polygenic score. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Patients with psychosis (n = 424)were assessed in areas of cognitive ability impaired in schizophrenia including IQ, memory, attention, and social cognition.We used the Psychiatric GWAS Consortium 1 schizophrenia genome-wide association study to calculate a polygenic score based on identified risk variants within this genetic pathway. Cognitive measures significantly associated with the polygenic score were tested for an epistatic component using a training set (n = 170), which was used to develop linear regression models containing the polygenic score and 2-SNP interactions. The best-fitting models were tested for replication in 2 independent test sets of cases: (1) 170 individuals with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder and (2) 84 patients with broad psychosis (including bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and other psychosis). MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Participants completed a neuropsychological assessment battery designed to target the cognitive deficits of schizophrenia including general cognitive function, episodic memory, working memory, attentional control, and social cognition. RESULTS Higher polygenic scores were associated with poorer performance among patients on IQ, memory, and social cognition, explaining 1%to 3%of variation on these scores (range, P = .01 to .03). Using a narrow psychosis training set and independent test sets of narrow phenotype psychosis (schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder), broad psychosis, and control participants (n = 89), the addition of 2 interaction terms containing 2 SNPs each increased the R2 for spatial working memory strategy in the independent psychosis test sets from 1.2%using the polygenic score only to 4.8%(P = .11 and .001, respectively) but did not explain additional variation in control participants. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE These data support a role for the ZNF804A pathway in IQ, memory, and social cognition in cases. Furthermore, we showed that epistasis increases the variation explained above the contribution of the polygenic score. © 2014 American Medical Association. All rights reserved.

Abstract

BackgroundSchizophrenia is associated with lower pre-morbid intelligence (IQ) in addition to (pre-morbid) cognitive decline. Both schizophrenia and IQ are highly heritable traits. Therefore, we hypothesized that genetic variants associated with schizophrenia, including copy number variants (CNVs) and a polygenic schizophrenia (risk) score (PSS), may influence intelligence.MethodIQ was estimated with the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS). CNVs were determined from single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data using the QuantiSNP and PennCNV algorithms. For the PSS, odds ratios for genome-wide SNP data were calculated in a sample collected by the Psychiatric Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) Consortium (8690 schizophrenia patients and 11 831 controls). These were used to calculate individual PSSs in our independent sample of 350 schizophrenia patients and 322 healthy controls.ResultsAlthough significantly more genes were disrupted by deletions in schizophrenia patients compared to controls (p = 0.009), there was no effect of CNV measures on IQ. The PSS was associated with disease status (R2 = 0.055, p = 2.1 × 10−7) and with IQ in the entire sample (R2 = 0.018, p = 0.0008) but the effect on IQ disappeared after correction for disease status.ConclusionsOur data suggest that rare and common schizophrenia-associated variants do not explain the variation in IQ in healthy subjects or in schizophrenia patients. Thus, reductions in IQ in schizophrenia patients may be secondary to other processes related to schizophrenia risk.

Abstract

We examined the role of common genetic variation in schizophrenia in a genome-wide association study of substantial size: a stage 1 discovery sample of 21,856 individuals of European ancestry and a stage 2 replication sample of 29,839 independent subjects. The combined stage 1 and 2 analysis yielded genome-wide significant associations with schizophrenia for seven loci, five of which are new (1p21.3, 2q32.3, 8p23.2, 8q21.3 and 10q24.32-q24.33) and two of which have been previously implicated (6p21.32-p22.1 and 18q21.2). The strongest new finding (P = 1.6 × 10 -11) was with rs1625579 within an intron of a putative primary transcript for MIR137 (microRNA 137), a known regulator of neuronal development. Four other schizophrenia loci achieving genome-wide significance contain predicted targets of MIR137, suggesting MIR137-mediated dysregulation as a previously unknown etiologic mechanism in schizophrenia. In a joint analysis with a bipolar disorder sample (16,374 affected individuals and 14,044 controls), three loci reached genome-wide significance: CACNA1C (rs4765905, P = 7.0 × 10 -9), ANK3 (rs10994359, P = 2.5 × 10 -8) and the ITIH3-ITIH4 region (rs2239547, P = 7.8 × 10 -9). © 2011 Nature America, Inc. Abstract

Chest radiotherapy continues to play an important role in the treatment of breast cancer, Hodgkin's lymphoma, and other malignancies. Subsequent cardiac injury has been described involving essentially all structures of the heart, with most radiation-induced injury being progressive in nature. Our understanding over the multifactorial etiology and development of radiation-associated cardiac injury has advanced, leading to improved techniques aimed at decreasing cardiac radiation exposure and associated risks. Monitoring after radiotherapy clearly appears to be indicated; however, optimal recommendations regarding cardiac screening remain difficult to establish.

Abstract

The muon anomalous magnetic moment measurement, when compared with theory, can be used to test many extensions to the standard model. Abstract

Cardiotoxicity is a well-known side-effect described in patients receiving various antineoplastic agents. With the abundance of clinical research and a heavy focus on drug development over the past decade, there has been a major shift in the use of non-specific cytotoxic drugs to molecular-targeted drug therapy. However, as a result, it has become clear that these drugs have numerous adverse effects, both on-target and off-target. Small-molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitors and other molecular-targeted agents, including monoclonal antibodies, have been the primary agents associated with cardiotoxicity. As more molecular-targeted therapies are developed, early recognition and management of drug-related cardiotoxicity will be extremely important in order to reduce morbidity and mortality. Pre-treatment evaluation with a surface electrocardiogram, echocardiography, cardiac history, and comprehensive review of concomitant medications are the current mainstay of treatment. However, much is still unknown about the potential cardiotoxic side-effects of these drug and optimal management. In the present article, we aim to review the cardiovascular implications and related cardiotoxicities associated with molecular target-based chemotherapeutic agents, with special emphasis on hypertension, cardiac dysfunction, and QT prolongation. Their implication, mechanism, and management are discussed where possible.

Abstract

Recent results indicate that genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have the potential to explain much of the heritability of common complex phenotypes, but methods are lacking to reliably identify the remaining associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). We applied stratified False Discovery Rate (sFDR) methods to leverage genic enrichment in GWAS summary statistics data to uncover new loci likely to replicate in independent samples. Specifically, we use linkage disequilibrium-weighted annotations for each SNP in combination with nominal p-values to estimate the True Discovery Rate (TDR = 1−FDR) for strata determined by different genic categories. We show a consistent pattern of enrichment of polygenic effects in specific annotation categories across diverse phenotypes, with the greatest enrichment for SNPs tagging regulatory and coding genic elements, little enrichment in introns, and negative enrichment for intergenic SNPs. Stratified enrichment directly leads to increased TDR for a given p-value, mirrored by increased replication rates in independent samples. We show this in independent Crohn's disease GWAS, where we find a hundredfold variation in replication rate across genic categories. Applying a well-established sFDR methodology we demonstrate the utility of stratification for improving power of GWAS in complex phenotypes, with increased rejection rates from 20% in height to 300% in schizophrenia with traditional FDR and sFDR both fixed at 0.05. Our analyses demonstrate an inherent stratification among GWAS SNPs with important conceptual implications that can be leveraged by statistical methods to improve the discovery of loci., Author Summary Modern genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have failed to identify large portions of the genetic basis of common, complex traits. Recent work suggested this could be because many genetic variants, each with individually small effects, compose their genetic architecture, limiting the power of GWAS. Moreover, these variants appear more abundantly in and near genes. Using genome annotations, summary statistics from several of the largest GWAS, and established statistical methods for quantifying distributions of test statistics, we show a consistency across studies. Namely, we show that, across all assessed traits, the test statistics resulting from SNPs that are related to the 5′ UTR of genes show the largest abundance of associations, while SNPs related to exons and the 3′UTR are also enriched. SNPs related to introns are only moderately enriched, and intergenic SNPs show a depletion of associations relative to the average SNP. This enrichment corresponds directly to increased replication across independent samples and can be incorporated a priori into statistical methods to improve discovery and prediction. Our results contribute to on-going debates about the functional nature of the genetic architecture of complex traits and point to avenues for leveraging existing GWAS data for discovery in future GWA and sequencing studies.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Thousands of common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are weakly associated with schizophrenia. It is likely that subsets of disease-associated SNPs are associated with distinct heritable disease-associated phenotypes. Therefore, we examined the shared genetic susceptibility modulating schizophrenia and brain volume. METHODS: Odds ratios for genome-wide SNP data were calculated in the sample collected by the Psychiatric Genome-wide Association Study Consortium (8690 schizophrenia patients and 11,831 control subjects, excluding subjects from the present study). These were used to calculate individual polygenic schizophrenia (risk) scores in an independent sample of 152 schizophrenia patients and 142 healthy control subjects with available structural magnetic resonance imaging scans. RESULTS: In the entire group, the polygenic schizophrenia score was significantly associated with total brain volume (R2 = .048, p = 1.6 × 10(-4)) and white matter volume (R2 = .051, p = 8.6 × 10(-5)) equally in patients and control subjects. The number of (independent) SNPs that substantially influenced both disease risk and white matter (n = 2020) was much smaller than the entire set of SNPs that modulated disease status (n = 14,751). From the set of 2020 SNPs, a group of 186 SNPs showed most evidence for association with white matter volume and an explorative functional analysis showed that these SNPs were located in genes with neuronal functions. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that a relatively small subset of schizophrenia genetic risk variants is related to the (normal) development of white matter. This, in turn, suggests that disruptions in white matter growth increase the susceptibility to develop schizophrenia.

Abstract

Hepatic hydrothorax is defined as a pleural effusion in patients with liver cirrhosis in the absence of cardiopulmonary disease. The estimated prevalence among patients with liver cirrhosis is approximately 5-6%. The pathophysiology involves the passage of ascitic fluid from the peritoneal cavity to the pleural space through diaphragmatic defects. The diagnosis is made from clinical presentation and confirmed by diagnostic thoracentesis with pleural fluid analysis. The initial medical management is sodium restriction and diuretics, but liver transplantation provides the only definitive therapy. For patients who are not transplant candidates and those who await organ availability, other therapeutic modalities that are to be considered include transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt placement, videoassisted thoracoscopic surgery repair, pleurodesis, and vasoconstrictors (eg, octreotide and terlipressin). The primary therapeutic goals are to reduce ascitic fluid production and improve symptoms to bridge the time for liver transplantation.

Abstract

The exponential increase in the rate of obesity and its associated co-morbidities has increased the demand for bariatric surgery. Over the past few decades, surgical weight reduction by gastric restriction, malabsorption, or a combination of both has been the preferred approach to achieve sustained weight loss in the morbidly obese. Although extremely effective, surgical procedures carry significant complications and risk with mortality rates of 1%. Because of the cost, surgical risk, and complications, there is a demand for less invasive procedures. Endoscopic approaches include placement of endoluminal space-occupying devices, stapling devices to reduce gastric volume, barrier devices to reduce small bowel absorptive area, and methods to regulate gastric emptying. Current and ongoing studies have delivered promising results across many aspects of endoscopic approaches. However, many technical obstacles still exist that have to be resolved with further research before endoscopic bariatrics can be widely deployed. At present the role of endoscopy is well established in preoperative evaluation as well as in recognition and management of many postoperative complications in bariatrics. In this article, we review the current and future endoscopic methods for weight reduction that are either in practice or in testing.

Abstract

Results are presented from a reanalysis of the entire five-tower data set acquired with the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS II) experiment at the Soudan Underground Laboratory, with an exposure of 969 kg-days. The analysis window was extended to a recoil energy of 150 keV, and an improved surface-event background-rejection cut was defined to increase the sensitivity of the experiment to the inelastic dark matter (iDM) model. Three dark matter candidates were found between 25 keV and 150 keV. The probability to observe three or more background events in this energy range is 11%. Because of the occurrence of these events, the constraints on the iDM parameter space are slightly less stringent than those from our previous analysis, which used an energy window of 10-100 keV. © 2011 American Physical Society.

Abstract

We examined the role of common genetic variation in schizophrenia in a genome-wide association study of substantial size: a stage 1 discovery sample of 21,856 individuals of European ancestry and a stage 2 replication sample of 29,839 independent subjects. The combined stage 1 and 2 analysis yielded genome-wide significant associations with schizophrenia for seven loci, five of which are new (1p21.3, 2q32.3, 8p23.2, 8q21.3 and 10q24.32-q24.33) and two of which have been previously implicated (6p21.32-p22.1 and 18q21.2). The strongest new finding (P = 1.6 × 10 -11) was with rs1625579 within an intron of a putative primary transcript for MIR137 (microRNA 137), a known regulator of neuronal development. Four other schizophrenia loci achieving genome-wide significance contain predicted targets of MIR137, suggesting MIR137-mediated dysregulation as a previously unknown etiologic mechanism in schizophrenia. In a joint analysis with a bipolar disorder sample (16,374 affected individuals and 14,044 controls), three loci reached genome-wide significance: CACNA1C (rs4765905, P = 7.0 × 10 -9), ANK3 (rs10994359, P = 2.5 × 10 -8) and the ITIH3-ITIH4 region (rs2239547, P = 7.8 × 10 -9). © 2011 Nature America, Inc. Abstract

This paper investigates the extent to which Australian CEOs are compensated following the completion of mergers and acquisitions (M&A)with reference to the incentive alignment and managerial power perspective. Findings reveal that CEOs of acquiring ?rms receive signi?- cantly higher compensation in the year of completing M&As and one year after. This higher compensation is presented in all forms: bonus only, salary only, salary and bonus, and total compensation. It is also found that the incentive alignment and managerial power approach are not mutually exclusive and they both can have some degrees of explaining the variation of CEO compensation following mergers. We ?nd a positive correlation between CEO compensation and ?rm performance, and some measures of CEOs e?ort and skill in completing the deal. However, we observe that CEOs of bidding ?rms have signi?cantly lower bonus and total compensation if there is any entrenchment in the CEO governance process (i.e. CEO is also a chair of the board, or a member of the nominating committee). This result is sharply opposite to the US evidence (Gristein and Hribar (2004)) where CEO compensation after mergers is signi?cantly driven by CEO power. Abstract

In the muon (g - 2) experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the spin precession frequency omega(a) is obtained from a standard chi(2) minimization fit applied to the time distribution of decay electrons. The unusually high accuracy (similar to 0.5 ppm) of the experiment puts stringent requirements on the quality of the fit and the level of understanding of the statistical properties of the fitted parameters. We discuss the properties of the fits and their implications on the derived value for omega(a), including estimates of the effect of an imperfect fit function, methods of including additional external information to reduce the error, the effects of splitting the data into many smaller subsets of data, applying different weighting methods to the data using energy information, and various tests of data suitability. Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first cryogenic experiment searching for neutrinoless double-beta (0vßß) decay that has been able to reach the one-ton scale. The detector, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. Following the completion of the detector construction in August 2016, CUORE began its first physics data run in 2017 at a base temperature of about 10 mK. Following multiple optimization campaigns in 2018, CUORE is currently in stable operating mode. In 2019, CUORE released its 2nd result of the search for 0vßß with a TeO2 exposure of 372.5 kg·yr and a median exclusion sensitivity to a 130Te 0vßß decay half-life of 1.7 · 1025 yr. We find no evidence for 0vßß decay and set a 90% C.I. (credibility interval) Bayesian lower limit of 3.2 · 1025 yr on the 130Te 0vßß decay half-life. In this work, we present the current status of CUORE's search for 0vßß, as well as review the detector performance. Finally, we give an update of the CUORE background model and the measurement of the 130Te two neutrino double-beta (2vßß) decay half-life.

Abstract

The muon anomalous magnetic moment has been measured in a new experiment at Brookhaven. Polarized muons were stored in a superferric ring, and the angular frequency difference, omega(a), between the spin precession and orbital frequencies was determined by measuring the time distribution of high-energy decay positrons. The ratio R of omega(a) to the Larmor precession frequency of free protons, omega(p), in the storage-ring magnetic field was measured. We find R = 3.707 220(48) X 10(-3). With mu(mu)/mu(p) = 3.183 345 47(47) this gives a(mu+) = 1 165 925(15) X 10(-9) (+/-13 ppm), in good agreement with the previous CERN measurements for mu(+) and mu(-) and of approximately the same precision.

Abstract

Presently the CDMS-II collaboration's Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) search at the Soudan Underground Laboratory sets the most stringent exclusion limits of any WIMP cold dark matter direct-detection experiment. To extend our reach further, to WIMP-nucleon cross sections in the range $10^{-46} - 10^{-44}$cm$^2$, we propose SuperCDMS, which would take advantage of a very deep site. One promising site is the recently approved SNOLab facility in Canada. In this paper we will present our overall plan, identify primary issues, and set the goals that need to be met prior to embarking upon each phase of SuperCDMS., Submitted to Texas Symposium on Relativistic Astrophysics held at Stanford, Dec. 2004. Abstract

The presence of a magnesian vivianite (Fe2+)2.5(Mg, Mn, Ca)0.5(PO4)2. 8H2O, has been identified in a soil sample form a Roman camp near Fort Vechten, The Netherlands, using a combination of Raman microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. An unsubstituted vivianite and baricite were characterized for comparative reasons. The split phosphate-stretching mode is recognized around 1115, 1062 and 1015 cm-1, while the corresponding bending modes are found around 591, 519, 471 and 422 cm-1. The substitution of Mg and Mn for Fe2+ in the crystal structure causes a shift towards higher wavenumbers compared to pure vivianite. As shown by the baričite sample substitution causes a broadening of the bands. The observed broadening however is larger than can be explained by substitution alone. The low intensity of the water bands, especially in the OH-stretching region between 2700 and 3700 cm-1 indicates that the magnesian vivianite is partially dehydrated, which explains the much larger broadening than the observed broadening caused by substitution of Mg and Mn in vivianite and baričite.
