Dowry is a cultural practice where a person transfers money, property, goods, in the form of gifts to their partner's family before, upon or after marriage. Dowry abuse is an act of violence or abuse and threats, linked with giving or receiving dowry, any time before, during or after the marriage. The giving of dowry is a marriage custom prevalent in South Asian countries and becoming increasingly popular in Australia. The South Asian populations comprise of those originating from countries such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka. Although dowry is illegal in key South Asian countries, it remains a common practice. This project funded by City of Parramatta Council and Western Sydney University, aims to understand how to define and identify dowry abuse and address this type of domestic and family violence within the South Asian community of Western Sydney.

Dowry abuse is defined as ‘any act of violence or harassment associated with the giving or receiving of dowry at any time before, during or after the marriage’ (United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women, 2009). It is not a uniquely religious practice and affects women and families of various backgrounds (Jopson, 2017). The issue of dowry abuse is of particular concern to the City of Parramatta Council. The Council recognises that their community is diverse; and therefore, uniquely affected by dowry abuse. Through their relationships with local domestic and family violence services, the Council has recognised that dowry abuse is a significant issue with the newly arrived and established migrant communities. Currently, there is a dearth of research and best practice models about dowry abuse in Australia and how it manifests in communities and services. This project, therefore, seeks to fill in this gap in knowledge by exploring case files related to dowry abuse as well as engaging with the perspectives of South Asian women and service providers to better understand how to define, identify and address this significant issue of domestic and family violence. The South Asian community is defined as communities of people who have settled in Australia but whose ancestors originate from countries such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Research Aims and Objectives This research, funded by both Western Sydney University and the City of Parramatta Council, aimed to develop data and evidence about the incidence, rate and impact of dowry abuse within the South Asian community of Western Sydney. The objectives of this project were: 1. To develop and run a community-led, culturally competent research project that captures community voices and strengths. 2. To create high quality data that can be utilised in advocacy initiatives and training programs for communities and front-line professionals. 3. To build the capacity of community and service providers to prevent and address dowry abuse.

INTRODUCTION: Transgender (trans) women of color navigate the intersected identity frames of gender, race, social class and sexuality, whilst facing multiple layers of stigma, discrimination and violence during and following gender affirmation. However, little is known about the ways in which trans women of color negotiate gender affirmation, in the context of the risk of social exclusion and violence. AIM: This article discusses the experience and construction of gender transitioning and gender affirmation for trans women of color living in Australia, associated with the risk of social exclusion or violence. METHOD: In-depth interviews and photovoice were conducted with 31 trans women of color, analyzed through theoretical thematic analysis informed by intersectionality theory. RESULTS: The following themes were identifed: 1) ‘Gender affirmation: A bittersweet experience’, with three subthemes: ‘Self-empowerment is tempered by family rejection’, ‘Migration facilitates gender affirmation’ and ‘Gender affirmation and social support’; 2) ‘Being a trans woman of color’, subthemes: ‘Bodily agency and passing’, ‘Femininity as pleasure and cultural self-expression’, and ‘Resisting archetypal White hetero-femininity’; 3) ‘Hormones, surgical intervention and navigating the health system’. CONCLUSION: Gender transitioning and gender affirmation involved the intersection of gender, cultural, social class and sexual identities, accomplished through personal agency and with the support of significant others. To ensure that policy and support services meet the needs of trans women of color, it is critical that the voices of such multiply-marginalized women are at the center of leadership, program and policy development.

This study explored how Indigenous women living in Australia understand, experience and construct sexuality within contexts dominated by revealed the impact of Eurocentric conceptualisations of gender, embodiment and intimacy. This project was informed by feminist methodology and collected data using semi-structured focus groups, which naturally took on the yarning method. The discussions, held on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, were had with women aged 42 to 73 years, across three focus groups. The women primarily constructed sexuality within Australia’s history of colonisation, discrimination and prejudice against Indigenous people, the uptake of European values and their impact on Indigenous people over time and across generations. Self-esteem was a central feature across all major themes and described as integral to health constructions of sexuality and health relationships. Changes over time were characterised by the women’s commitment to instilling self-esteem in following generations as well as limitations to self-esteem resulting from discrimination. Socialising future generations to display and embrace intimacy was also central to a healthy construction of sexuality. The findings from this study reinforce that learning from Indigenous women about sexuality and ageing is key to enriching the evidence-base as well as health worker and researcher capacity while reinforcing the importance of self-care among Indigenous older women. Integrating such an approach with Indigenous women has the potential to increase the effectiveness and relevance of health promotion and wellbeing programmes aimed at older Indigenous women in the present and future.

Constructions of sexuality and disability have been discussed widely by scholars across a number of fields. However, there has been relatively little research on how people with Cerebral Palsy construct their own sexuality and the salience of the socio-sexual schema which are involved in this process. As such this study aimed to address three questions; 1) the relative salience of public, interactional and private sexual schema in the construction of sexuality for people with Cerebral Palsy, 2) how people with Cerebral Palsy construct sexual participation, and particularly sexual spontaneity and, 3) how people with Cerebral Palsy describe their sexuality. This project utilized a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to explore these questions. In doing so, this study helps fill the gap between how sexuality and disability is constructed external to the individual and how the individual constructs their own sexuality. For this research, seven in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five men and two women with moderate to severe Cerebral Palsy. Participant data indicated that how people with Cerebral Palsy perceive sexual experiences with others (interactional) is the most influential factor in the construction of their sexuality. Public influences were cumulatively the second most important factor in the construction of sexuality by people with Cerebral Palsy. Finally, private influences were cumulatively the least influential factor in the construction of their sexuality. Sexual spontaneity primarily was a derivative of sexual exploration. Furthermore, participants defined sexual spontaneity as liberating and allowed them to experience their sexuality with others relatively independent of normative sexual scripts. Participants also described their sexuality primarily in terms of major transitions and experiences which involved others. Based on the findings sexual theory needs to be more cognizant of sexual agency as primary in the construction of sexuality with significant disability. In addition, healthcare providers and people with Cerebral Palsy are likely to be successful partners in sexual health when they promote positive and agentic constructions of sexuality with significant disability. The findings emphasize that people with Cerebral Palsy are cognizant and intelligent agents in the construction of their sexuality. Their articulations, understandings and descriptions of their sexuality demonstrate their interest and awareness in their sexuality and issues related to it. People with Cerebral Palsy are sexual agents and beings who empower themselves.
