In the current work, synthesis of an amorphous NiCo-MOF with an ultra-high mass loading (10.3 mg cm−2) and an ultra-thick plate structure was achieved via a one-step solvothermal method.

HS 2325+8205 is a long-period eclipsing dwarf nova with an orbital period above the period gap (Porb > 3 h) and is reported to be a Z Cam-type dwarf nova. We study the light variation and the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of HS 2325+8205 based on the photometry of theTransiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Using a continuous wavelet transform, a Lomb–Scargle periodogram (LSP), and sine fitting methods, we find for the first time that there is a QPO of ∼2160 s in the long outburst top light curves of HS 2325+8205. Moreover, we find that the oscillation intensity of the QPOs of HS 2325+8205 is related to the orbital phase, and the intensity in orbital phases 0.5–0.9 is stronger than in orbital phases 0.1–0.5. Therefore, the relationship between the oscillation intensity of QPOs and the orbital phase may become a topic of research into the origin of QPOs. Reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) has emerged as a reliable approach to aligning large language models (LLMs) to human preferences. Among the plethora of RLHF techniques, proximal policy optimization (PPO) is of the most widely used methods. Despite its popularity, however, PPO may suffer from mode collapse, instability, and poor sample efficiency. We show that these issues can be alleviated by a novel algorithm that we refer to as Advantage-Induced Policy Alignment (APA), which leverages a squared error loss function based on the estimated advantages. We demonstrate empirically that APA consistently outperforms PPO in language tasks by a large margin, when a separate reward model is employed as the evaluator. In addition, compared with PPO, APA offers a more stable form of control over the deviation from the model's initial policy, ensuring that the model improves its performance without collapsing to deterministic output. In addition to empirical results, we also provide a theoretical justification supporting the design of our loss function.

Microbial oxidation of organic compounds can promote arsenic release by reducing soil-associated arsenate to the more mobile form arsenite. While anaerobic oxidation of methane has been demonstrated to reduce arsenate, it remains elusive whether and to what extent aerobic methane oxidation (aeMO) can contribute to reductive arsenic mobilization. To fill this knowledge gap, we performed incubations of both microbial laboratory cultures and soil samples from arsenic-contaminated agricultural fields in China. Immunosuppression commonly occurs after a stroke, which is believed to be associated with the increased risk of infectious comorbidities of stroke patients, while the mechanisms underlying post-stroke immunosuppression is yet to be elucidated. In the brains of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) patients and murine ICH models, we identified that neuron-derived programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) is reduced in the perihematomal area, associating increased soluble PD-L1 level in the peripheral blood. ICH induced a significant decrease of T and natural killer (NK) cell numbers in the periphery with an upregulation of programed death-1 (PD-1) in these cells. Blocking PD-1 pathway with an anti-PD1 monoclonal antibody prevented the T and NK cell compartment contraction and spleen atrophy post-ICH, with reduced pulmonary bacterial burden and improved neurological outcome. Thus, we here identified that brain-derived PD-L1 as a new mechanism driving post-stroke immunosuppression, and anti-PD1 treatment could be potentially developed to reducing the risk of post-stroke infections.

Background Plasma amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides and tau proteins are promising biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), not only for predicting Aβ and tau pathology but also for differentiating AD from other neurodegenerative diseases. However, reference intervals for plasma biomarkers of AD in healthy elderly Chinese individuals have not yet been established. Methods Biomarkers of AD were measured using single-molecule array (Simoa) assays in plasma samples from 193 healthy, cognitively unimpaired Chinese individuals aged 50–89 years. The 95% reference intervals for plasma Aβ42, Aβ40, t-tau, p-tau181, and derived ratios were calculated by using log-transformed parametric methods. Results Plasma Aβ42, Aβ40, and p-tau181 levels were positively correlated with age, while the Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio was negatively correlated with age. The 95% reference intervals for plasma Aβ42 and Aβ40 were 2.72–11.09 pg/mL and 61.4–303.9 pg/mL, respectively, and the 95% reference intervals for plasma t-tau and p-tau181 were 0.20–3.12 pg/mL and 0.49–3.29 pg/mL, respectively. The 95% reference intervals for the Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio, p-tau181/t-tau ratio, and p-tau181/Aβ42 ratio were 0.022–0.064, 0.38–6.34, and 0.05–0.55, respectively. Conclusion Reference intervals for plasma biomarkers of AD may assist clinicians in making accurate clinical decisions.

Characterizing the structural properties of galaxies in high-redshift protoclusters is key to our understanding of the environmental effects on galaxy evolution in the early stages of galaxy and structure formation. In this study, we assess the structural properties of 85 and 87 Halpha emission-line candidates (HAEs) in the densest regions of two massive protoclusters, BOSS1244 and BOSS1542, respectively, using HST H-band imaging data. Our results show a true pair fraction of 22+-5 (33+-6) percent in BOSS1244 (BOSS1542), which yields a merger rate of 0.41+-0.09 (0.52+-0.04) per Gyr for massive HAEs with log (M_*/M_sun) > 10.3. This rate is 1.8 (2.8) times higher than that of the general fields at the same epoch. Our sample of HAEs exhibits half-light radii and Sersic indices that cover a broader range than field star-forming galaxies. Additionally, about 15 percent of the HAEs are as compact as the most massive (log(M_*/M_sun) > 11) spheroid-dominated population. These results suggest that the high galaxy density and cold dynamical state (i.e., velocity dispersion of, 20 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Introduction: Cervical cancer, ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer are the top three cancers in women. With the rapid development of gene chip and high-throughput sequencing technology, it has been widely used to study genomic functional omics data and identify markers for disease diagnosis and treatment. At the same time, more and more public databases containing genetic data have appeared. The result of the bioinformatic analysis can provide a diagnosis of new perspectives on cell origin and differences. Methods: In this paper, three datasets about cervical cancer, ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer from GEO were used to dig out common DEGs (differentially expressed genes) among cervical cancer/ovarian cancer/endometrial cancer. DEGs contain 400 up-regulation genes and 157 down-regulation genes Results and Discussions: The results of GO (gene ontology) functional enrichment analysis show that the BP (biological process) changes of DEGs are mainly in cell division, mitotic nuclear division, sister chromatid cohesion, and DNA replication. The CC (cell component) function enrichments of DEGs were mainly in the nucleoplasm, nucleus, condensed chromosome kinetochore, chromosome, centromeric region. The MF (molecular function) function enrichments of DEGs were mainly in protein binding. The results of the KEGG pathway analysis showed that the upregulation DEGs were mainly enriched in retinoblastoma gene in the cell cycle, cellular senescence, oocyte meiosis, and pathways in cancer, while the downregulation DEGs enriched in thiamine metabolism, protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum. Similarly, the function of the most significant module was enriched in cell division, condensed chromosome kinetochore, and microtubule motor activity. Conclusion: In the result, 4 of the top 10 hub genes (CCNA2, CCNB1, CDC6 and CDK1) will provide help for future biomedical experimental research.

Since the successful clinical trial of AuroShell for photothermal therapy, there is currently intense interest in developing gold-based core-shell structures with near-infrared (NIR) absorption ranging from NIR-I (650–900 nm) to NIR-II (900–1700 nm). Here, we propose a seed-mediated successive growth approach to produce gold nanoshells on the surface of the nanoscale metal–organic framework (NMOF) of UiO-66-NH2 (UiO = the University of Oslo) in one pot. The key to this strategy is to modulate the proportion of the formaldehyde (reductant) and its regulator / oxidative product of formic acid to harness the particle nucleation and growth rate within the same system. The gold nanoshells propagate through a well-oriented and controllable diffusion growth pattern (points → facets → octahedron), which has not been identified. Most strikingly, the gold nanoshells prepared hereby exhibit an exceedingly broad and strong absorption in NIR-II with a peak beyond 1300 nm and outstanding photothermal conversion efficiency of 74.0%. Owing to such superior performance, these gold nanoshells show promising outcomes in photoacoustic (PA), computed tomography (CT), and photothermal imaging-guided photothermal therapy (PTT) for breast cancer, as demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo.

Background Peri-implantitis is the most difficult biological complication associated with dental implants, often requiring surgical treatments in advanced stages. This study compares the effectiveness of different surgical methods for peri-implantitis. Methods Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of different surgical treatments for peri-implantitis were extracted from EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library databases, and PubMed systematically. Pairwise comparisons and network meta-analyses (NMA) were conducted to analyze the effect of surgical treatments on probing depth (PD), radiographic bone fill (RBF), mucosal recession (MR), bleeding on probing (BOP), and clinical attachment level (CAL). In addition, risk of bias, quality of evidence, and statistical heterogeneity of the selected studies were evaluated. A total of 13 articles were included in this study, involving open flap debridement (OFD), resective therapy (RT), and augmentative therapy (AT) with and without adjunctive treatments (laser therapy, photodynamic therapy, local antibiotics, phosphoric acid, and ozone therapy). Results AT improved RBF and CAL more than OFD, but does not outperform OFD in reducing peri-implant soft-tissue inflammation. AT, OFD and RT did not significantly alter the levels of MR. Addition of ozone therapy improved the effect of AT, but addition of photodynamic therapy did not affect PD reduction and CAL gain significantly. Similarly, adjuvant treatment with phosphoric acid during RT did not significantly change the outcome of BOP. Conclusions Within the limitation of this systematic review and NMA, AT was superior to OFD in improving peri-implantitis outcomes. While adjunct use of ozone therapy may further improve the efficacy of AT, the limited evidence supporting this combination therapy argues for cautionary interpretation of these results.

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) accumulate in the spleen and tumors and contribute to tumor growth, angiogenesis, and progression. In this study, we examined the effects of curcumin on the activation and differentiation of MDSCs, their interaction with human cancer cells, and related tumor growth. Treatment with curcumin in the diet or by intraperitoneal injection significantly inhibited tumorigenicity and tumor growth, decreased the percentages of MDSCs in the spleen, blood, and tumor tissues, reduced interleukin (IL)-6 levels in the serum and tumor tissues in a human gastric cancer xenograft model and a mouse colon cancer allograft model. Curcumin treatment significantly inhibited cell proliferation and colony formation of cancer cells and decreased the secretion of murine IL-6 by MDSCs in a coculture system. Curcumin treatment inhibited the expansion of MDSCs, the activation of Stat3 and NF-κB in MDSCs, and the secretion of IL-6 by MDSCs, when MDSCs were cultured in the presence of IL-1β, or with cancer cell- or myofibroblast-conditioned medium. Furthermore, curcumin treatment polarized MDSCs toward a M1-like phenotype with an increased expression of CCR7 and decreased expression of dectin 1 in vivo and in vitro. Our results show that curcumin inhibits the accumulation of MDSCs and their interaction with cancer cells and induces the differentiation of MDSCs. The induction of MDSC differentiation and inhibition of the interaction of MDSCs with cancer cells are potential strategies for cancer prevention and therapy. This paper investigates the effects of non-driving related tasks, take-over request time, and take-over mode interactions on take-over performance in human–machine cooperative driving in a highway environment. Based on the driving simulation platform, a human–machine collaborative driving simulation experiment was designed with various take-over quality influencing factors. The non-driving related tasks included no task, listening to the radio, watching videos, playing games, and listening to the radio and playing games; the take-over request time was set to 6, 5, 4, and 3 s, and the take-over methods include passive and active take-over. Take-over test data were collected from 65 drivers. The results showed that different take-over request times had significant effects on driver take-over performance and vehicle take-over steady state (p < 0.05). Driver reaction time and minimum TTC decreased with decreasing take-over request time, maximum synthetic acceleration increased with decreasing take-over request time, accident rate increased significantly at 3 s take-over request time, and take-over safety was basically ensured at 4 s request time. Different non-driving related tasks have a significant effect on driver take-over performance (p < 0.05). Compared with no task, non-driving related tasks significantly increase driver reaction time, but they only have a small effect on vehicle take-over steady state. Vehicle take-over mode has a significant effect on human–machine cooperative driving take-over quality; compared with passive take-over mode, the take-over quality under active take-over mode is significantly lower.

Deep sea cold seep sediments have been discovered to harbor novel, abundant, and diverse bacterial and archaeal viruses. However, little is known about viral genetic features and evolutionary patterns in these environments. Here, we examined the evolutionary ecology of viruses across active and extinct seep stages in the area of Haima cold seeps in the South China Sea. Diverse antiviral defense systems in 487 microbial genomes spanning 43 families inform the dynamics of host-virus interactions. Accordingly, a total of 338 viral operational taxonomic units are identified and linked to 36 bacterial and archaeal phyla. Cold seep viruses are predicted to harbor diverse adaptive strategies to persist in this environment, including counter-defense systems, reverse transcriptases, auxiliary metabolic genes, and alternative genetic code assignments. Extremely low nucleotide diversity is observed in cold seep viral populations, being influenced by factors including microbial host, sediment depth and cold seep stage. Most cold seep viral genes are under strong purifying selection with trajectories that differ depending on whether cold seeps are active or extinct. This work sheds light on the understanding of environmental adaptation mechanisms and evolutionary patterns of viruses in the sub-seafloor biosphere.

Objectives Neuroinflammation has been suggested that affects the processing of depression. There is renewed interest in berberine owing to its anti-inflammatory effects. Herein, we investigated whether berberine attenuate depressive-like behaviors via inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome activation in mice model of depression. Methods Adult male C57BL/6N mice were administrated corticosterone (CORT, 20 mg/kg/day) for 35 days. Two doses (100 mg/kg/day and 200 mg/kg/day) of berberine were orally administrated from day 7 until day 35. Behavioral tests were performed to measure the depression-like behaviors alterations. Differentially expressed gene analysis was performed for RNA-sequencing data in the prefrontal cortex. NLRP3 inflammasome was measured by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, western blotting, and immunofluorescence labeling. The neuroplasticity and synaptic function were measured by immunofluorescence labeling, Golgi–Cox staining, transmission electron microscope, and whole-cell patch-clamp recordings. Results The results of behavioral tests demonstrated that berberine attenuated the depression-like behaviors induced by CORT. RNA-sequencing identified that NLRP3 was markedly upregulated after long-term CORT exposure. Berberine reversed the concentrations of peripheral and brain cytokines, NLRP3 inflammasome elicited by CORT in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus were decreased by berberine. In addition, the lower frequency of neuronal excitation as well as the dendritic spine reduction were reversed by berberine treatment. Together, berberine increases hippocampal adult neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity induced by CORT. Conclusion The anti-depressants effects of berberine were accompanied by reduced the neuroinflammatory response via inhibiting the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome and rescued the neuronal deterioration via suppression of impairments in synaptic plasticity and neurogenesis.

While the slope of the dust attenuation curve ($\delta$) is found to correlate with effective dust attenuation ($A_V$) as obtained through spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, it remains unknown how the fitting degeneracies shape this relation. We examine the degeneracy effects by fitting SEDs of a sample of local star-forming galaxies (SFGs) selected from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey, in conjunction with mock galaxy SEDs of known attenuation parameters. A well-designed declining starburst star formation history is adopted to generate model SED templates with intrinsic UV slope ($\beta_0$) spanning over a reasonably wide range. Based on CAFE theory and KGT model, the twin-roll strip casting mathematical model was established to solve the dendrite growth and solidification of T2 copper alloy in the molten pool. The influence mechanism of casting temperature, heat transfer, and other technological conditions on the microstructure of strip was analyzed. The results showed that the liquid metal formed 35 µm chilling layer after touching the rollers, and the layer was consisted of a high number of small and equiaxed crystals. Then some grains would appear close to the newly chilling layer, and grow toward the core of molten pool competitively. The dominant grains mainly grew along the 〈001〉 orientation into columnar crystals, and the rest grains that grew out of alignment were eliminated gradually. The number of grains declined, and the radius of columnar grains became coarsening. The Kiss point is a key factor for solidification structure, and the lower location of the Kiss point could limit the growth spaces of columnar crystals, which refined the grains.

Vision loss can occur when the cornea loses transparency or changes shape. The most effective treatment to restore vision is to use full or partial layers of donor cornea for corneal transplantation. However, there is a severe shortage of donor corneas worldwide, with more than 98.5% of patients with corneal blindness waiting for donor corneas. In addition, there exist some problems such as the possibility of infection, allotransplantation immunologic rejection, and other problems after corneal transplantation. Therefore, tissue-engineering corneas have been widely studied over the years as a viable alternative to donor corneas, with different materials and methods. And in nearly ten years, the research has had breakthrough progress. The ultimate goal of the research is to construct a full or partial tissue-engineering graft with good transparency, biocompatibility, and appropriate mechanical strength to repair, regenerate, or replace diseased corneas. This review discusses the research progress and existing problems about the most frequently studied natural biomaterials in recent years. These biomaterials include amniotic membrane, acellular cornea, collagen, and silk. In addition to the future research directions, other challenges related to the biomaterials discussed in this field are illustrated.
