The incidence of fungal infections has increased significantly in recent years, motivated especially by COVID-19. Candida yeasts are responsible for most of these infections. This commensal yeast is easily found in the oral mucosa, gastrointestinal tract, urogenital tract, skin and mucous membranes of healthy individuals. Under certain circumstances, when there is a disruption of the biological balance, there may be an increase in the multiplication and invasion of host tissues by these microorganisms. The expression of certain virulence factors such as polymorphism, adhesins, proteases and phospholipases and the formation of microbial biofilms, facilitate tissue penetration and confer greater pathogenicity to these yeasts. This mini-review provides information on the current state of knowledge about virulence, including antifungal resistance of Candida species.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV- 2), a novel betacoronavirus, is the etiological agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a global health threat. The rapid spread of COVID-19 has resulted in an urgent requirement for rapid diagnosis and effective therapeutic strategies against SARSCoV- 2 [1]. Besides symptomatic patients, recent studies indicate that people who are infected but do not presented symptoms also play a role in the spread of COVID-19. Spread happens when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, and aerosol/droplets from their mouth or nose are launched into the air and reaches the mucous membranes of people nearby [2]. Although some point-of-test assay and Enzyme Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay (ELISA) based protocols are available for COVID-19 diagnosis, the reverse transcriptase real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) remains as gold standard diagnostic tool and is supposed to present high sensitivity and reliability of viral genome in clinical specimens [3]. Healthcare Workers (HCW) are at high risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and epidemiological features of its transmission into household are limited. Several families, mainly from HCW, are temporarily separated due to isolation and quarantine, and the risks associated with these professions and the dynamics of household transmission must be evaluated [4]. These questions are still more notorious in low income and developing countries, such as Brazil, once public health policies anti-COVID-19 is extremely fragile. During COVID-19 pandemics, a 39-year-old Brazilian woman, intensive care physician at tertiary hospital in our region, in the third trimester of pregnancy, experiencing hyposmia and ageusia (temporary loss of smell and taste respectively), presenting cough, sneeze and nasal congestion, was diagnosed with COVID-19 by RT- qPCR. Since December 2019, COVID-19 has become major global public health problem. The understanding of SARS-CoV-2, especially the effect on pregnant women and neonates, is still not fully elucidated. This report case describes a pregnant with COVID-19 and rubella. SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid was not detected in the neonate just after birth, indicating that there was not vertical transmission. Although anti-SARS-CoV-2 Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody and anti-Rubella Virus IgG antibody were detected in the newborn serum, anti-SARS-CoV-2 (Immunoglobulin M) IgM and anti-Rubella Virus IgM were not detected. The observations may suggest transplacental transmission of coronavirus and rubella antibodies, ensuring immediate immunity against these pathogens to newborn.
