Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate an electro-optic Gaussian-to-Bessel beam-converter miniaturized down to a 30 × 30 ?m pixel in a potassium-lithium-tantalate-niobate (KLTN) paraelectric crystal. The converter is based on the electro-optic activation of a photoinduced and reconfigurable volume axicon lens achieved using a prewritten photorefractive funnel space-charge distribution. The transmitted light beam has a tunable depth of field that can be more than twice that of a conventional beam with the added feature of being self-healing.

Abstract

"Endothelial Progenitor Cells (EPCs), a minor subpopulation of the mononuclear cell fraction in peripheral blood, play a critical role in cancer development as they contribute to angiogenesis-mediated pathological neovascularization. In response to tumor cytokines, including VEGF, EPCs mobilize from the bone marrow into the peripheral circulation and move to the tumor bed where they incorporate into sprouting neovessels. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of everolimus (Afinitor, Novartis), a rapamycin analogue, alone or in combination with chloroquine, a 4-alkylamino substituted quinoline family member, one of the autophagy inhibitors, on EPCs biological functions. We found that either everolimus or chloroquine induce growth inhibition on EPCs in a dose-dependent manner after 72 h from the beginning of incubation. The combined administration of the two drugs to EPC was synergistic in inducing growth inhibition; in details, the maximal pharmacological synergism between everolimus and chloroquine in inducing growth inhibition on EPCs cells was recorded when chloroquine was administered 24 h before everolimus. Moreover, we have studied the mechanisms of cell death induced by the two agents alone or in combination on EPCs and we have found that the synergistic effect of combination on EPC growth inhibition was paralleled by increased apoptosis induction and reduced autophagy. These effects occurred together with biochemical features that are typical of reduced autophagic death such as increased co-immunoprecipitation between Beclin 1 and Bcl-2. Chloroquine antagonized the inhibition of the activity of Akt→4EBP1 axis mediated by everolimus and at the same time it blocked the feed-back activation of Erk-1\/2 induced by RAD in EPCs. These data suggest a new strategy in order to block angiogenesis in tumours in which this process plays a key role in both the sustainment and spreading of cancer cells"

Abstract

We have developed a dedicated breast imager, which makes use of a pendulum geometry of the breast and of a combined imaging modality, namely CT and SPECT co-registration. The CT scanner is composed by a quasi-monochromatic source which produces a 28 keV-fan beam and a linear digital detection system. X-ray source and digital detector are assembled on a toroidal tomograph gantry with about 13 cm of circular field of view. The gantry also contains the SPECT acquisition system, composed by a detector made of CsI scintillating crystal matrices coupled to Hamamatsu position sensitive photomultipliers and lead collimators. The toroid rotates under computer control so as to acquire separated slices over an angle of 180 deg. Each X-ray and SPECT image is acquired and reconstructed by using a specifically developed software, that also allows the fusion of the morphological with the functional information. In this paper a description of the prototype and the preliminary results are presented. Images of various test phantoms have been acquired with both modalities and first images with the fusion technique are presented.

Abstract

The vacuum element can be used as a target in a photon-photon collider in order to study its properties. Some of these properties are predicted by Quantum Electrodynamics, while additional and unexpected properties might be linked to the existence of yet undiscovered axion-like particles (ALPs) interacting with two photons. In this low energy case (1–2 texteV), real photons from a polarized laser beam are scattered off virtual photons provided by a magnetic field. Information on the scattering processes can be obtained by measuring changes in the polarization state of the probe photons. In the PVLAS (Polarizzazione del Vuoto con LASer) experiment, running at the Legnaro Laboratory of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), near Padova, Italy, a linearly polarized laser beam is sent through a 5 textT strong magnetic field in vacuum, where it is reflected back and forth, by means of a Fabry-P’erot resonator, ∼ 50,000 times over a distance of 1 textm. A heterodyne ellipsometer allows the simultaneous detection of a birefringence and a rotation of the polarization plane. The sensitivity of the instrument allows the detection of rotation or of ellipticity angles of about 10-9 textrad, in an hour of data taking. The measurement technique employed by PVLAS will be illustrated, and recent results on polarization effects due to the magnetized vacuum will be presented in this chapter. The interpretation of these effects in terms of the production of ALPs will also be discussed. Finally, the realization of a photon-regeneration type experiment will be briefly illustrated.

Abstract

The machine described in this document is an advanced Source of up to 20 MeV Gamma Rays based on Compton back-scattering, i.e. collision of an intense high power laser beam and a high brightness electron beam with maximum kinetic energy of about 720 MeV. Fully equipped with collimation and characterization systems, in order to generate, form and fully measure the physical characteristics of the produced Gamma Ray beam. The quality, i.e. phase space density, of the two colliding beams will be such that the emitted Gamma ray beam is characterized by energy tunability, spectral density, bandwidth, polarization, divergence and brilliance compatible with the requested performances of the ELI-NP user facility, to be built in Romania as the Nuclear Physics oriented Pillar of the European Extreme Light Infrastructure. This document illustrates the Technical Design finally produced by the EuroGammaS Collaboration, after a thorough investigation of the machine expected performances within the constraints imposed by the ELI-NP tender for the Gamma Beam System (ELI-NP-GBS), in terms of available budget, deadlines for machine completion and performance achievement, compatibility with lay-out and characteristics of the planned civil engineering.

Fully equipped with collimation and characterization systems, in order to generate, form and fully measure the physical characteristics of the produced Gamma Ray beam. The quality, i.e. phase space density, of the two colliding beams will be such that the emitted Gamma ray beam is characterized by energy tunability, spectral density, bandwidth, polarization, divergence and brilliance compatible with the requested performances of the ELI-NP user facility, to be built in Romania as the Nuclear Physics oriented Pillar of the European Extreme Light Infrastructure. This document illustrates the Technical Design finally produced by the EuroGammaS Collaboration, after a thorough investigation of the machine expected performances within the constraints imposed by the ELI-NP tender for the Gamma Beam System (ELI-NP-GBS), in terms of available budget, deadlines for machine completion and performance achievement, compatibility with lay-out and characteristics of the planned civil engineering.

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to perform an immunophenotypic analysis of human gingival fibroblast cells and its eventual modulation by Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor (GM-CSF).Gingival fibroblasts were derived from gingival biopsy of 15 healthy subjects. The presence of fibroblast cells in culture and the absence of epithelial cells was performed with fluorescence microscopy using vimentin and cytokeratin markers, respectively. Molecular expression of gingival fibroblast cell membrane was carried out with monoclonal antibodies by flow cytometry analysis. Human recombinant GM-CSF at the concentration of 200 ng/ml was used for the in vitro stimulation of gingival fibroblasts. Statistical analysis was performed using the Student "t"-test.Human gingival fibroblasts express a wide surface molecular panel including mainly CD59, CD99, CD9, CD95, CD55, CD63, CD26, CD117, CD71 and CD86. The GM-CSF seems to regulate the CD49B expression positively and the CD40 and CD103 expression negatively.Results show that GM-CSF is able to modulate the in vitro expression of some membrane molecules of gingival fibroblasts and therefore it may regulate, in vivo, peculiar specific biological functions of gingival tissue.

Abstract

We have used the EGS4 Monte Carlo code to simulate the performance of a Positron Emission Tomograph for small animals. The Tomograph is a four-head detector, made of matrices of 400 YAP:Ce finger-like crystals (2×2×30 mm3 each) coupled to Position Sensitive Photo-Multipliers Hamamatsu R2486-06. 3-D reconstruction algorithms have been applied to the 3-D simulated data. The Monte Carlo results show that a spatial resolution below 2 mm (FWHM) can be obtained over a field of view of 2×2×2 cm3 with a sensitivity of about 550 counts/(μCis) for a gantry diameter of 15 cm, and a threshold of 150 keV.

Abstract

Nonlinear interactions of light with light are well known in quantum electronics, and it is quite common to generate harmonic or subharmonic beams from a primary laser with photonic crystals. One suprising result of quantum electrodynamics is that because of the quantum fluctuations of charged fields, the same can happen in vacuum. The virtual charged particle pairs can be polarized by an external field and vacuum can thus become birefringent: the PVLAS experiment was originally meant to explore this strange quantum regime with optical methods. Since its inception PVLAS has found a new, additional goal: in fact vacuum can become a dichroic medium if we assume that it is filled with light neutral particles that couple to two photons, and thus PVLAS can search for exotic particles as well. PVLAS implements a complex signal processing scheme: here we describe the double data acquisition chain and the data analysis methods used to process the experimental data., Comment: presented by E. Abstract

In this article, we present an analysis of the stability of optical lattices. Starting with the study of an unstable optical lattice, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for intrinsic phase stability, and discuss two practical solutions to fulfill this condition, namely minimal and folded optical lattices. We then present a particular example of two-dimensional folded optical lattice which has the advantage of being symmetric, power recycling and having a convenient geometry. We have used this lattice for laser collimation of a continuous cesium beam in a fountain geometry., 13 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Commercially pure titanium implants presenting a relatively smooth, machined surface or a roughened endosseous surface show a large percentage of clinical success. Surface properties of dental implants seem to affect bone cells response. Implant topography appears to modulate cell growth and differentiation of osteoblasts affecting the bone healing around the titanium implant. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of 1cm diameter and 1mm thick titanium disks on cellular morphology, adhesion and bone phenotypic expression of human osteoblast-like cells, SaOS-2. SaOS-2 cells were cultured on commercially 1 cm pure titanium disks with three different surface roughness: smooth (S), sandblasted (SB) and titanium plasma sprayed (TPS). Differences in the cellular morphology were found when they were grown on the three different surfaces. An uniform monolayer of cells recovered the S surface, while clusters of multilayered irregularly shaped cells were distributed on the rough SB and TPS surfaces. The adhesion of SaOS-2 cells, as measured after 3h of culture, was not affected by surface roughness. ECM components such as Collagen I (CoI), Fibronectin (FN), Vitronectin (VN) and Tenascin (TN) were secreted and organized only on the SB and TPS surfaces while they remained into the cytoplasm on the S surfaces. Osteopontin and BSP-II were largely detected on the SB and TPS surfaces, while only minimal production was observed on the S ones. These data show that titanium surface roughness affects bone differentiation of osteoblast like-cells, SaOS-2, indicating that surface properties may be able to modulate the osteoblast phenotype. These observations also suggest that the bone healing response around dental implants can be affected by surface topography.
