Abstract: Background Since the emergence of SARS-CoV-2, evolutionary pressure has driven large increases in the transmissibility of the virus. However, with increasing levels of immunity through vaccination and natural infection the evolutionary pressure will switch towards immune escape. Genomic surveillance in regions of high immunity is crucial in detecting emerging variants that can more successfully navigate the immune landscape. Methods We present phylogenetic relationships and lineage dynamics within England (a country with high levels of immunity), as inferred from a random community sample of individuals who provided a self-administered throat and nose swab for rt-PCR testing as part of the REal-time Assessment of Community Transmission-1 (REACT-1) study. During round 14 (9 September–27 September 2021) and 15 (19 October–5 November 2021) lineages were determined for 1322 positive individuals, with 27.1% of those which reported their symptom status reporting no symptoms in the previous month. Results We identified 44 unique lineages, all of which were Delta or Delta sub-lineages, and found a reduction in their mutation rate over the study period. The proportion of the Delta sub-lineage AY.4.2 was increasing, with a reproduction number 15% (95% CI 8–23%) greater than the most prevalent lineage, AY.4. Further, AY.4.2 was less associated with the most predictive COVID-19 symptoms (p = 0.029) and had a reduced mutation rate (p = 0.050). Both AY.4.2 and AY.4 were found to be geographically clustered in September but this was no longer the case by late October/early November, with only the lineage AY.6 exhibiting clustering towards the South of England. Conclusions As SARS-CoV-2 moves towards endemicity and new variants emerge, genomic data obtained from random community samples can augment routine surveillance data without the potential biases introduced due to higher sampling rates of symptomatic individuals.

Abstract: The $\eta$ and $\eta^{\prime}$ mesons are nearly unique in the particle universe since they are almost Goldstone bosons and the dynamics of their decays are strongly constrained. The integrated $\eta$-meson samples collected in earlier experiments amount to $\sim10^{9}$ events. A new experiment, REDTOP (Rare Eta Decays To Probe New Physics), is being proposed, with the intent of collecting a data sample of order 10$^{14}$ $\eta$ (10$^{12}$ $\eta^{\prime}$) for studying very rare decays. Such statistics are sufficient for investigating several symmetry violations, and for searching for particles and fields beyond the Standard Model. In this work we present several studies evaluating REDTOP sensitivity to processes that couple the Standard Model to New Physics through all four of the so-called \emph{portals}: the Vector, the Scalar, the Axion and the Heavy Lepton portal. The sensitivity of the experiment is also adequate for probing several conservation laws, in particular $CP$, $T$ and Lepton Universality, and for the determination of the $\eta$ form factors, which is crucial for the interpretation of the recent measurement of muon $g-2$.

Abstract: The evolution of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus leads to new variants that warrant timely epidemiological characterization. Here we use the dense genomic surveillance data generated by the COVID-19 Genomics UK Consortium to reconstruct the dynamics of 71 different lineages in each of 315 English local authorities between September 2020 and June 2021. This analysis reveals a series of subepidemics that peaked in early autumn 2020, followed by a jump in transmissibility of the B.1.1.7/Alpha lineage. The Alpha variant grew when other lineages declined during the second national lockdown and regionally tiered restrictions between November and December 2020. A third more stringent national lockdown suppressed the Alpha variant and eliminated nearly all other lineages in early 2021. Yet a series of variants (most of which contained the spike E484K mutation) defied these trends and persisted at moderately increasing proportions. However, by accounting for sustained introductions, we found that the transmissibility of these variants is unlikely to have exceeded the transmissibility of the Alpha variant. Finally, B.1.617.2/Delta was repeatedly introduced in England and grew rapidly in early summer 2021, constituting approximately 98% of sampled SARS-CoV-2 genomes on 26 June 2021.

4. Bulk Rashba spin splitting and Dirac surface state in $p$-type (Bi$_{0.9}$Sb$_{0.1})_2$Se$_3$ single crystal

Abstract: We report bulk Rashba spin splitting (RSS) and associated Dirac surface state in (Bi$_{0.9}$Sb$_{0.1})_2$Se$_3$, exhibiting dominant $p$-type conductivity. We argue from the synchrotron diffraction studies that origin of the bulk RSS is due to a structural transition to a non-centrosymmetric $R3m$ phase below $\sim$ 30 K. The Shubnikov-de Haas Van (SdH) oscillations observed in the magnetoresistance curves at low temperature and the Landau level fan diagram, as obtained from these oscillations, confirm the presence of nontrivial Dirac surface state. The magnetization data at low temperature exhibit substantial orbital magnetization consistent with the bulk RSS. The existance of both the bulk RSS and Dirac surface states are confirmed by first principles density functional theory calculations. Coexistence of orbital magnetism, bulk RSS, and Dirac surface state is unique for $p$-type (Bi$_{0.9}$Sb$_{0.1})_2$Se$_3$, making it an ideal candidate for spintronic applications.

5. An Upgrade Path for the Fermilab Accelerator Complex

Abstract: The completion of the PIP-II project and its superconducting linear accelerator will provide up to 1.2 MW of beam power to the LBNF/DUNE facility for neutrino physics. It will also be able to produce high-power beams directly from the linac that can be used for lower-energy particle physics experiments as well, such as directing beam toward the Muon Campus at Fermilab for example. Any further significant upgrade of the beam power to DUNE, however, will be impeded by the limitations of the present Booster synchrotron at the facility. To increase the power to DUNE by a factor of two would require a new accelerator arrangement to feed the Main Injector that does not include the Booster. In what follows, a path toward upgrading the Fermilab accelerator complex to bring the beam power for DUNE to 2.4 MW is presented, using a new rapid-cycling synchrotron plus an energy upgrade to the PIP-II linac. The path includes the ability to instigate a new lower-energy, very high-power beam delivery system for experiments that can address much of the science program presented by the Booster Replacement Science Working Group. 6. Rhombohedral distortion-driven ferroelectric order and exchange bias effect in geometrically frustrated ZnFe$_2$O$_4$

We observe the magnetic memory effect, suggesting a cooperative glassy magnetic state below TN. The phase separation between the long-range AFM and the glassy magnetic component leads to the EB effect below T$_N$. The synchrotron diffraction studies confirm a structural transition to a polar R3m structure from the cubic spinel structure, involving a strong rhombohedral distortion. This distortion correlates with the occurrence of the spontaneous electric polarization (P) below ��110 K (T$_{FE1}$), which is accompanied by a short-range order (SRO). The P-value enhances further due to an additional rhombohedral distortion below T$_N$. A considerable magnetoelectric (ME) coupling is detected below T$_{FE1}$. The increase of P is ��7.2% for 5 T at the liquid nitrogen temperature. 7. Tuning of multiferroic order with Co doping in $CuCr_{2}O_{4}$ : Interplay between structure and orbital order

The systematic substitution of Jahn-Teller (J-T) active divalent Cu ion by a non-Jahn-Teller active divalent Co ion causes a systematic shift of TFE from 170 K for x=0 to 146 K for x=0.8 in Cu1−xCoxCr2O4. The values of electric polarization vary from 0.0665 μCcm−2 to 0.1704 μCcm−2, which is maximum for x=0.6, associated with the highest value of the coercivity. The synchrotron diffraction studies of the compounds with x=0.2 and 0.8 confirm that a structural transition to a polar Ima2 space group from the tetragonally distorted I41/amd structure gives rise to the ferroelectricity. In all the members of Cu1−xCoxCr2O4 series, the TFE is observed at much higher temperature than the corresponding magnetic ordering temperatures (TN). 8. Ferroelectric order associated with an ordered occupancy at the octahedral site of the inverse spinel structure of multiferroic NiFe2O4

Abstract: We report a ferroelectric order at ~ 98 K for NiFe2O4, which carries an inverse spinel structure with a centrosymmetric Fd3m structure at room temperature. The value of spontaneous electric polarization is considerably high as ~ 0.29 {\mu}C/cm2 for 5 kV/cm poling field. The electric polarization decreases considerably (~ 17 %) around liquid nitrogen temperature upon application of 50 kOe field, proposing a significant magnetoelectric coupling. The synchrotron diffraction studies confirm a structural transition at ~ 98 K to a noncentrosymmetric structure of P4122 space group. The occurrence of polar order is associated with an ordered occupancy of Ni and Fe atoms at the octahedral sites of the P4122 structure, instead of random occupancies at the octahedral site of the inverse spinel structure. Its main purpose is to reduce beam loss as required by Fermilab's Proton Improvement Plan (PIP). The ferroelectric ordering temperatures are observed at much higher temperatures than their corresponding magnetic ordering temperatures for all the members. The values of electric polarization ($P$) are significantly high, which vary from $∼217 to ∼640μC/m^2$ for a 4 kV/cm poling field. The large value of $P(∼590μC/m^2)$ for $YCrO_4$ compared to the smallest $P$ value in the series for $GdCrO_4$ signifies that the magnetic rare-earth element does not directly influence the $P$ value. Our careful analysis of the low-temperature synchrotron diffraction studies confirms that the distortion of $CrO_4$ tetrahedra directs the $P$ value. Abstract: This paper reports the first measurement using the NOvA detectors of $\nu_\mu$ disappearance in a $\nu_\mu$ beam. The analysis uses a 14 kton-equivalent exposure of $2.74 \times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target from the Fermilab NuMI beam. Assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy, we measure $\Delta m^{2}_{32}=(2.52^{+0.20}_{-0.18})\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^{2}$ and $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ in the range 0.38-0.65, both at the 68% confidence level, with two statistically-degenerate best fit points at $\sin^2\theta_{23} = $ 0.43 and 0.60. Abstract: Mu2e at Fermilab will search for charged lepton flavor violation via the coherent conversion process mu- N --> e- N with a sensitivity approximately four orders of magnitude better than the current world's best limits for this process. Abstract: A perpendicularly biased 2nd harmonic cavity is being designed and built for the Fermilab Booster. Its purpose is to flatten the bucket at injection and thus change the longitudinal beam distribution to decrease space charge effects. It can also help at extraction. The cavity frequency range is 76 - 106 MHz. The power amplifier will be built using the Y567B tetrode, which is also used for the fundamental mode cavities in the Fermilab Booster. Abstract: © 2016 American Physical Society. We report results from the first search for νμ→νe transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to 2.74×1020 protons on target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of 0.99±0.11(syst) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of 1.07±0.14(syst). The 3.3σ excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors 0.1π

Abstract: We report results from the first search for nu(mu) -> nu(e) transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to 2.74 x 10(20) protons on target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of 0.99 +/- 0.11 (syst) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of 1.07 +/- 0.14 (syst). The 3.3 sigma excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors 0.1 pi < delta(CP) < 0.5 pi in the inverted mass hierarchy at the 90% C.L.

19. Mycetoma Caused by a New Red Grain Mycetoma Agent in Two Members of a Family

Abstract: An 18-year-old woman from rural West Bengal was affected with mycetoma involving her neck, back, and chest. After an interval of eight years, her younger brother developed mycetoma on his left arm. No history of trauma or immune deficiency was present in either case. By microscopic examination of sinus-discharged materials from both the cases, identical rusty red, hard grains were demonstrated. Soluble red pigment-producing colonies grew in Sabouraud dextrose-agar medium. Isolates were positive for casein hydrolysis and negative for hydrolysis test of xanthine, hypoxanthine, tyrosine, and nitrate reduction. Thus it differed from the only known red grain mycetoma agent, Actinomadura pelletieri and was provisionally identified as Actinomadura vinacea. Familial affection in mycetoma, that too caused by a new agent, is reported here for its uniqueness.

24. An experimental study of boundary layer transition induced by a cylinder wake

Abstract: Boundary layer transition induced by the wake of a circular cylinder in the free stream has been investigated using the particle image velocimetry technique. Some differences between simulation and experimental studies have been reported in the literature, and these have motivated the present study. The appearance of spanwise vortices in the early stage is further confirmed here. Lambda spanwise vortex appears to evolve into a Lambda/hairpin vortex; the flow statistics also confirm such vortices. With increasing Reynolds number, based on the cylinder diameter, and with decreasing cylinder height from the plate, the physical size of these hairpin-like structures is found to decrease. Some mean flow characteristics, including the streamwise growth of the disturbance energy, in a wake-induced transition resemble those in bypass transition induced by free stream turbulence. Streamwise velocity streaks that are eventually generated in the late stage often undergo sinuous-type oscillations. Similar to other transitional flows, an inclined shear layer in the wall-normal plane is often seen to oscillate and shed vortices. The normalized shedding frequency of these vortices, estimated from the spatial spacing and the convection velocity of these vortices, is found to be independent of the Reynolds number, similar to that in ribbon-induced transition. Although the nature of free stream disturbance in a wake-induced transition and that in a bypass transition are different, the late-stage features including the flow breakdown characteristics of these two transitions appear to be similar.

28. Linear stability, transient growth and the role of viscosity stratification in compressible Couette flow

Abstract: Linear stability and the nonmodal transient energy growth in compressible plane Couette flow are investigated for two prototype mean flows: (a) the uniform shear flow with constant viscosity, and (b) the nonuniform shear flow with stratified viscosity. Both mean flows are linearly unstable for a range of supersonic Mach numbers (M). For a given M, the critical Reynolds number (Re) is significantly smaller for the uniform shear flow than its nonuniform shear counterpart; for a given Re, the dominant instability (over all streamwise wave numbers, α) of each mean flow belongs to different modes for a range of supersonic M. An analysis of perturbation energy reveals that the instability is primarily caused by an excess transfer of energy from mean flow to perturbations. It is shown that the energy transfer from mean flow occurs close to the moving top wall for “mode I” instability, whereas it occurs in the bulk of the flow domain for “mode II.” For the nonmodal transient growth analysis, it is shown that the maximum temporal amplification of perturbation energy, Gmax, and the corresponding time scale are significantly larger for the uniform shear case compared to those for its nonuniform counterpart. For α=0, the linear stability operator can be partitioned into L∼L̅ +Re2 Lp, and the Re-dependent operator Lp is shown to have a negligibly small contribution to perturbation energy which is responsible for the validity of the well-known quadratic-scaling law in uniform shear flow: G(t∕Re)∼Re2. In contrast, the dominance of Lp is responsible for the invalidity of this scaling law in nonuniform shear flow. An inviscid reduced model, based on Ellingsen-Palm-type solution, has been shown to capture all salient features of transient energy growth of full viscous problem. For both modal and nonmodal instability, it is shown that the viscosity stratification of the underlying mean flow would lead to a delayed transition in compressible Couette flow.

Abstract: Deletions of chromosome sequences mapping to the short arm of chromosome 8 have been observed frequently in a variety of human cancers. A small number of studies have suggested that the terminal portion of the short arm of chromosome 8, 8pter-p23, may be deleted independently of other portions of 8p in human tumors, and that deletion of the 8pter-p23 region may be correlated with poor prognosis. The aim of the present study was to physically define the minimal region of 8pter-p23 deletion and to define the frequency and prognostic significance of 8pter-p23 loss in human prostate tumors. DNA was purified from normal and tumor tissues of 45 radical prostatectomy specimens and amplified for 15 highly polymorphic microsatellite sequences, 13 spanning 8pter-p23 and 2 proximal 8p markers. Allelic loss of 8p sequences was observed in 28 of 45 (62%) tumors examined. Of these, approximately half (12 of 28; 43%) demonstrated independent loss of the 8pter-p23 region, with several tumors defining a 5-cM minimal region of deletion spanning D8S264-D8S1824-D8S1781-D8S262-D8S1798. When serum prostate-specific antigen was used as a surrogate end point marker for survival, 8pter-p23 loss was significantly associated with reduced disease-free progression (log-rank P = 0.0426). Moreover, loss of the 8pter-p23 region was significantly associated with poor survival for American Caucasian (log-rank P = 0.0024) but not African-American (log-rank P = 0.5832) prostate cancer patients. These studies suggest that independent deletion of 8pter-p23 is differentially associated with disease recurrence and poor outcome in American Caucasian but not African-American prostate cancer patients.

Abstract: The Fermilab Main Injector was designed to accelerate protons and antiprotons from a momentum of 8.889 GeV/c to 150 GeV/c. In order to study antiproton deceleration, for the ultimate purpose of storing them in a Penning trap, the Main Injector was used to decelerate protons from the injection momentum down to the goal of 2.0 GeV/c. In this paper the operational experience of working with the Main Injector as a decelerator is presented. (1 refs).

Abstract: We explore the scenario where the core of a neutron star (having experienced a transition to an up and down quark phase) shrinks into the equilibrated quark object after reaching strange quark matter saturation density (where a composition of up, down and strange quarks is the favored state of matter). The overlaying (envelope) material free-falls following the core contraction releasing upto 10^{53} {\rm ergs} in energy as radiation, partly as a result of the conversion of envelope material to quarks. This phenomena, we named Quark-Nova, leads to a wide variety of ejectae ranging form the Newtonian, "dirty" to the ultra-relativistic fireball. The mass range of the corresponding compact remnant (the quark star) ranges from less than 0.3M_{\odot} up to a solar mass. We discuss the connection between Quark-Novae and Gamma ray bursts and suggest the recently studied GRB011211 event as a plausible Quark-Nova candidate., 4 pages, 2 figures, shortened title. Abstract: The effect of lateral streamline convergence alone on the transitional flow characteristics has been studied towards modelling the transition zone. Apart from a thicker boundary layer, the transitional flow characteristics are found to be similar to those in two-dimensional constant pressure flows. The transition zone has been modeled using the linear- combination model for two-dimensional flows.

Abstract: Compactness of some stars is explained if they are strange stars (SS) as shown by Dey et al. (1998) (D98) and Li et al. (1999a). One of these compact star candidates is the SAX J1808.4-3658 (SAX in short) believed to be an important link in the genesis of radio pulsars. SS have also been suggested for bursting X-ray pulsars (GRO J1744-28, Cheng et al. 1998), from quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) of X-ray binaries (4U 1728-34, Li et al. 1999b) and from peculiarity of properties of radio pulsars (PSR 0943+10, Xu et al.1999; Kapoor et al. 2000). We now extend the calculation to include high temperatures upto T = 70 MeV ~ 8 times 10^{11} ^oK and find that the nature of the mass (M) and radius (R), derived from astrophysical data, is still retained. The entropy is calculated and matches onto that calculated from hadronic models thus supporting the idea that the quark-hadron transition may be continuous., 4 pages, including 4 figures

41. Rotating compact strange stars

Abstract: We compute numerical models of uniformly rotating strange stars (SS) in general relativity for the recently proposed QCD-based equation of state (EOS) of strange quark matter (Dey et al. 1998). Static models based on this EOS are characterised by a larger surface redshift than strange stars within the MIT bag model. The frequencies of the fastest rotating configurations described by Dey model are much higher than these for neutron stars (NS) and for the simplest SS MIT bag model. We determine a number of physical parameters for such stars and compare them with those obtained for NS. We construct constant baryon mass equilibrium sequences both normal and supramassive. Similarly to the NS a supramassive SS, prior to collapse to a black hole, spins up as it loses angular momentum. We find the upper limits on maximal masses and maximal frequencies of the rotating configurations. We show that the maximal rotating frequency for each of considered evolutionary sequences is never the Keplerian one. A normal and low mass supramassive strange stars gaining angular momentum always slows down just before reaching the Keplerian limit. For a high mass supramassive SS sequence the Keplerian configuration is the one with the lowest rotational frequency in the sequence. The value of $T/W$ for rapidly rotating SS of any mass is significantly higher than those for ordinary NS. For Keplerian configurations it increases as mass decreases. 45. Transitional intermittency distribution pressure diverging flow in a three-dimensional constant

Abstract: Intermittency measurements are made in the transition-zone of a three-dimensional constant pressure diverging flow in order to study the effect of lateral strain rate on the intermittency distribution. Measured intermittency data are found to follow the two-dimensional behaviour thus indicating that the lateral strain rate does not affect the normalised intermittency distribution in the transition zone.
