Introduction: Cancer patients are exposed to several types of treatments, including chemotherapy. In this context, patients experience several nursing diagnoses, including spiritual distress. The definition of the diagnosis of spiritual distress is grounded in lack of meaning and purpose in life, a sense of suffering, and a feeling of disconnected. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, sensitivity, specificity, and predictors of the nursing diagnosis of spiritual distress of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Designs: The study used a longitudinal questionnaire design with quarterly data collection points over a 12-month period. Participants were recruited through random sampling, in an outpatients' setting in one oncology day unit in Portugal. Findings: The highest prevalence of spiritual distress was found at 3 months after patients started chemotherapy. The highest value of specificity was lack of meaning in life and express suffering, and the highest values of sensitivity concerned spiritual distress diagnosis. The predictors of spiritual distress were express suffering, alienation, questioning meaning in life, lack of serenity, questioning the meaning of suffering, hopelessness, and lack of meaning in life. Conclusions: Spiritual distress is a human response that is current in patients undergoing chemotherapy, and the highest prevalence seems to occur at 3 months after commencing chemotherapy. Express suffering and lack of meaning in life play the role not only of defining characteristics (DC) in this study, but also of predictors in the diagnosis of spiritual distress. Clinical Relevance: The identification of the prevalence, predictors, sensitivity, and specificity of the DC of the nursing diagnosis of spiritual distress in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy may facilitate nurses' clinical reasoning and improve the planning of nursing care in clinical practice in order to improve spiritual well-being in cancer patients.

Objective: The objective of the present study was validation of the nursing diagnosis Chronic Pain 00133 in women with gynaecological cancers. Methods: To validate the nursing diagnosis, we used the Patient-Focused Clinical Diagnostic Validity (CDV) model. We developed a questionnaire-type measuring instrument containing six defining characteristics of the nursing diagnosis Chronic Pain 00133. We discarded three defining characteristics because they were intended for an objective assessment by nurses. The sample consisted of 40 patients hospitalised at the Faculty Hospital in Nitra, the Department of Radiology and Clinical Oncology. The patients rated the defining characteristics on the Likert-type scale from 1 (Not at all characteristic of me) to 5 (Very characteristic of me). Results: The patients rated five defining characteristics as minor: Alteration in ability to continue previous activities (WS 0.66); Alteration in sleep pattern (WS 0.57); Self-focused (WS 0.72); Self-report of pain characteristics using standardized pain instrument (Brief Pain Inventory) (WS 0.7); Self-report of intensity using standardized pain scale (visual analogue scale, and numeric rating scale) (WS 0.7). They discarded one defining characteristic – Anorexia (WS 0.48). Conclusion: The study results imply the need for a quality comprehensive evaluation of chronic pain. The results also suggest the use of pain assessment instruments in clinical practice. Cieľ; Cieľom výskumu bola validácia ošetrovateľskej diagnózy Chronická bolesť 00133 u žien s gynekologicko-onkologickými ochoreniami. Metódy; Na validáciu ošetrovateľskej diagnózy sme použili Fehringov na pacienta zameraný model klin ickej diagnostickej validity (Patient – focused CDV model). Zostavili sme merací nástroj dotazníkového typu, ktorý obsahoval 6 určujúcich znakov ošetrovateľskej diagnózy Chronická bolesť 00133. Tri určujúce znaky sme vyradili, pretože boli určené pre objektívne posúdenie sestrami. Výskumný súbor predstavovalo 40 pacientie k hospitalizovaných vo Fakultnej nemocnici v Nitre, na Oddelení rádiológie a klinickej onkológie. Určujúce znaky hodnotili pacientky prostredníctvom Likertovej škály od 1 vôbec nie je charakteristická pre mňa) do 5 (veľmi charakteristická pre mňa). Výsledky; Pacientky zhodnotili päť určujúcich znakov ako vedľajších: Zmenená schopnosť pokračovať v predchádzajúcich aktivitách (VS 0,66); Zmenený vzorec spánku (VS 0,57); Zameranosť na seba (VS 0,72); Vlastné hlásenie o príznakoch bolesti pomocou štandardizovaného nástroja (krátky inventár bolesti – Brief Pain Inventory) (VS 0,7); Vlastné hlásenie o intenzite bolesti pomocou štandardizovaných škál bolesti (vizuálna analógová škála a numerická škála) (VS 0,7) a jeden určujúci znak vyradili – Anorexia (VS 0,48). Záver; Z výsledkov výskumu vyplýva potreba kvalitného komplexného hodnotenia chronickej bolesti. Výsledky tak isto poukazujú na využívanie nástrojov na hodnotenie bolesti v klinickej praxi.

Purpose: To document the prevalence of the nursing diagnosis of anxiety in hospital patients, based on its level of severity, defining characteristics (DCs), and other related factors, and to identify the key DCs that serve as predictors of clinically significant anxiety (CSA). Design: Cross-sectional study. We enrolled 116 consecutive adult patients hospitalized from October 10 to 16, 2016, in medical-surgical wards within the first 48 hr of admission. Methods: The potential DCs and related factors of anxiety were collected based on the NANDA International terminology. Anxiety was considered clinically significant when presenting at moderate, severe, or panic level. The differences in DC prevalence among patients having or not having CSA were analyzed by unpaired student's t-test. Multivariate analysis was used to examine the independent association between the DCs and CSA. Findings: The prevalence of CSA was 36.2% and was significantly higher in patients who were older, female, and taking anxiolytic drugs, and among those who had cancer. The most frequent related factor for CSA was major change in health status. In the logistic regression, the presence of the DCs helplessness, altered attention or concentration, and anguish independently increased the odds of having CSA, whereas subjects presenting with Diminished ability to problem-solve had about a 96% reduction in the likelihood to suffer from such a condition. Conclusions: A high prevalence of CSA among medical-surgical patients was shown. Furthermore, a critical cluster of DCs useful to identify CSA was found. Clinical Relevance: The ability to accurately diagnose CSA should help prescribe and deliver the appropriate nursing interventions.

This paper is a contribution to the general program introduced by Isaacs, Malle and Navarro to prove the McKay conjecture in the representation theory of finite groups. We develop new methods for dealing with simple groups of Lie type in the defining characteristic case. Using a general argument based on the representation theory of connected reductive groups with disconnected center, we show that the inductive McKay condition holds if the Schur multiplier of the simple group has order 2. As a consequence, the simple groups P Ω 2 m + 1 ( p n ) and PSp 2 m ( p n ) are “good” for p > 2 and the simple groups E 7 ( p n ) are “good” for p > 3 in the sense of Isaacs, Malle and Navarro. We also describe the action of the diagonal and field automorphisms on the semisimple and the regular characters.

In this paper, we verify Dade's invariant conjecture for Steinberg's triality groups D43(2n) in the defining characteristic, i.e., in characteristic 2. Together with the results in [J. An, Dade's conjecture for Steinberg triality groups D43(q) in non-defining characteristics, Math. Z. 241 (2002) 445–469] and [J. An, F. Himstedt, S. Huang, Uno's invariant conjecture for Steinberg's triality groups in defining characteristic, in preparation], this completes the proof of Dade's conjecture for Steinberg's triality groups. Furthermore, we show that the Isaacs–Malle–Navarro version of the McKay conjecture holds for D43(2n) in the defining characteristic, i.e., D43(2n) is good for the prime 2 in the sense of Isaacs, Malle and Navarro.

We verify Uno's invariant conjecture for Steinberg's triality groups D 4 3 ( q ) , q a power of an odd prime p, in the defining characteristic p. Uno's invariant conjecture is a refinement of Dade's invariant conjecture.
