Equine herpesvirus (EHV) commonly affects horses causing neurologic and respiratory symptoms beside spontaneous abortions, meaning huge economic losses for equine industry worldwide. In foals the virus can facilitate secondary infections byRhodococcus equi, important in morbidity and mortality in equines. A total of five genotypes of EHV were previously described in Brazil including EHV-1, EHV-2, EHV-3, EHV-4 and EHV-5. EHV-2 genotype had only been previously described in Brazil in asymptomatic animals. We report the dead of 11 foals in Middle-west region of Brazil showing respiratory and neurological symptoms, as well as several abortions in mares from the same farm. Laboratory exams revealed neutrophilia leukocytosis. Necroscopic and histopathologic findings were suppurative bronchopneumonia and ulcerative enteritis. Molecular assays point to the absence of the bacteriaRhodococcus equiand other EHV. The presence of EHV-2 DNA was confirmed by sequencing in serum sample from one foal. This is the first confirmed outbreak of EHV-2 causing disease in Brazilian horses with confirmed presence of the virus. EHV-2 has been neglected and could be highlight the important role of EHV-2 in equine respiratory disease and spontaneous abortions in equid in Brazil.Author SummaryEquid herpesvirus type 2 (EHV-2), a gammaherpesvirus, has been neglected and can cause respiratory infection, abortion and in extreme cases neurologic symptoms and dead.Outbreaks of EHV-2 never was described in Brazil and can be critical to losses in equid industry. Our report provides evidence for a direct link between the EHV-2 strain and the outbreak in foals. We proved the clinical, histopathological and phylogenetic analysis of segment of EHV-2 polymerase.In summary, our study confirm that Gammaherpesvirus 2 is circulating in Brazil and the EHV-2 is a cause of the first outbreak in foals showing the important role of EHV-2 in equid respiratory disease.

As part of our ongoing research on antioxidant agents from Brazilian flora, twenty extracts and fractions obtained from Pterogyne nitens Tulasne (Fabaceae) were screened for free radical scavenging activity by using ABTS [2,2’-azinobis(3-ethylenebenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)] and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl-hydrate) radicals colorimetric assay and -carotene bleaching test. The strongest activity was found in ethyl acetate fraction from the stem barks, exhibiting IC50 values (inìg/ml) of 2.10 ± 0.1 and 10.2 ± 0.3 on ABTS•+ and DPPH•, respectively. Additionally, chromatographic fractionation of stem barks yielding myricetin, quercitrin and mirycetrin, three flavonols with remarkable antioxidant activity.

O efeito de concentrações subinibitórias de penicilina sobre a produção do antígeno grupo-específico e da hialuronidase extracelular foi avaliado em uma amostra de estreptococo pertencente ao grupo G de Lancefield. Em todas as concentrações uma maior quantidade de antígeno grupo-específico foi extraída das células e a atividade específica de hialuronidase se mostrou aumentada em até 1400% nos sobrenadantes das culturas. O maior aumento na expressão de ambos os antígenos foi observado em 1/2 da CMI. The effect of subinhibitory concetrations of penicillin on a strain of streptococcus belonging to Lancefield group G was studied. Production of the group-specific antigen and extra- cellular hyaluronidase by drug-exposed cells were examined. At all concentrations levels a higher amount of group-specific antigen was extracted from cells and increases of up to 1400% in the specific activity of hyaluronidase were determined in culture supernates. The higher increase in the expression of both antigens was observed at 1/2 MIC.

O estudo sobre redundância de hospitalização, baseado no conceito de dependência aos cuidados de enfermagem, evidenciou que, em 99 pacientes que permaneceram 25 ou mais dias internados, foram redundantes em algum momento da internação, representando um desperdício de 1094 leitos-dia (30,17% do total de leitos-dia consumidos por este grupo de pacientes) . Estudou-se, também, um grupo de 102 pacientes com acompanhados durante uma semana, identificando-se 60 pacientes (59%) com hospitalização desnecessária. Não se verificou diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os grupos de pacientes redundantes e não redundantes em relação às variáveis sócio-demográficas estudadas. As condições que contribuíram com maior número de dias de redundância foram neoplasias, doenças do aparelho respiratório (pneumopatia complicada e doença pulmonar obstrutiva crônica), fraturas, hipertensão arterial com ou sem insuficiência cardíaca, acidente vascular cerebral e cirrose hepática. Face a magnitude do desperdício de recursos decorrentes da hospitalização desnecessária e riscos para o paciente da permanência prolongada no hospital, é recomendada a implantação de programas experimentais para tratamento domiciliar de pacientes crônicos.
