Managing wildlife populations in the face of global change requires regular data on the abundance and distribution of wild animals, but acquiring these over appropriate spatial scales in a sustainable way has proven challenging. Here we present the data from Snapshot USA 2020, a second annual national mammal survey of the USA. This project involved 152 scientists setting camera traps in a standardized protocol at 1485 locations across 103 arrays in 43 states for a total of 52,710 trap-nights of survey effort. Most (58) of these arrays were also sampled during the same months (September and October) in 2019, providing a direct comparison of animal populations in 2 years that includes data from both during and before the COVID-19 pandemic. All data were managed by the eMammal system, with all species identifications checked by at least two reviewers. In total, we recorded 117,415 detections of 78 species of wild mammals, 9236 detections of at least 43 species of birds, 15,851 detections of six domestic animals and 23,825 detections of humans or their vehicles. Spatial differences across arrays explained more variation in the relative abundance than temporal variation across years for all 38 species modeled, although there are examples of significant site-level differences among years for many species. Temporal results show how species allocate their time and can be used to study species interactions, including between humans and wildlife. These data provide a snapshot of the mammal community of the USA for 2020 and will be useful for exploring the drivers of spatial and temporal changes in relative abundance and distribution, and the impacts of species interactions on daily activity patterns. This abstract seeks to introduce the ISSAC community to the DEWCAD project, which is based at Coventry University and the University of Bath, in the United Kingdom. The project seeks to push back the Doubly Exponential Wall of Cylindrical Algebraic Decomposition, through the integration of SAT/SMT technology, the extension of Lazard projection theory, and the development of new algorithms based on CAD technology but without producing CADs themselves. The project also seeks to develop applications of CAD and will focus on applications in the domains of economics and bio-network analysis., Comment: 5 pages. We report the discovery of a new class of pulsating yellow supergiants observed by TESS. These stars are drawn from a sample of 75 cool (A-M) supergiants in the Galaxy and LMC. Stochastic low frequency variability (SLFV) is ubiquitous in the lightcurves of the entire sample. We rule out surface convection as the physical mechanism underlying this variability, suggesting it is connected to SLFV observed in hot stars. After correcting for the stochastic background, we find five yellow supergiants, all with similar luminosities and effective temperatures, that exhibit multiple periodicities on sub-day timescales. The region of the HR diagram containing these stars is not associated with any known class of pulsating star. We dub these stars “Fast Yellow Pulsating Supergiants” (FYPS). We discuss the properties of each individual FYPS, and their potential for unlocking asteroseismic analyses of cool supergiants. We conclude by discussing the significance of this discovery in the context of the red supergiant problem.

We use an extension of quadratic Chabauty to number fields, recently developed by the author with Balakrishnan, Besser and M ̈uller, combined with a sieving technique, to determine the integral points over Q(√−3) on the Mordell curve y2 = x3 − 4.

The goal of this white paper is to identify and describe promising key research goals to aid the theoretical characterization and observational detection of ionizing radiation from quiescent and flaring upper atmospheres of planet hosts as well as properties of stellar coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and stellar energetic particle (SEP) events.

The field of exoplanetary science is making rapid progress both in statistical studies of exoplanet properties as well as in individual characterization. As space missions provide an emerging picture of formation and evolution of exoplanetary systems, the search for habitable worlds becomes one of the fundamental issues to address. To tackle such a complex challenge, we need to specify the conditions favorable for the origin, development and sustainment of life as we know it. This requires the understanding of global (astrospheric) and local (atmospheric, surface and internal) environments of exoplanets in the framework of the physical processes of the interaction between evolving planet-hosting stars along with exoplanetary evolution over geological timescales, and the resulting impact on climate and habitability of exoplanets. Feedbacks between astrophysical, physico-chemical atmospheric and geological processes can only be understood through interdisciplinary studies with the incorporation of progress in heliophysics, astrophysics, planetary, Earth sciences, astrobiology, and the origin of life communities. The assessment of the impacts of host stars on the climate and habitability of terrestrial (exo)planets and potential exomoons around them may significantly modify the extent and the location of the habitable zone and provide new directions for searching for signatures of life. Thus, characterization of stellar ionizing outputs becomes an important task for further understanding the extent of habitability in the universe. We consider a problem from biological network analysis of determining regions in a parameter space over which there are multiple steady states for positive real values of variables and parameters. We describe multiple approaches to address the problem using tools from Symbolic Computation. We describe how progress was made to achieve semi-algebraic descriptions of the multistationarity regions of parameter space, and compare symbolic results to numerical methods. The biological networks studied are models of the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) network which has already consumed considerable effort using special insights into its structure of corresponding models. Our main example is a model with 11 equations in 11 variables and 19 parameters, 3 of which are of interest for symbolic treatment. The model also imposes positivity conditions on all variables and parameters. We apply combinations of symbolic computation methods designed for mixed equality/inequality systems, specifically virtual substitution, lazy real triangularization and cylindrical algebraic decomposition, as well as a simplification technique adapted from Gaussian elimination and graph theory. We are able to determine multistationarity of our main example over a 2-dimensional parameter space. We also study a second MAPK model and a symbolic grid sampling technique which can locate such regions in 3-dimensional parameter space.

We consider problems originating in economics that may be solved automatically using mathematical software. We present and make freely available a new benchmark set of such problems. The problems have been shown to fall within the framework of non-linear real arithmetic, and so are in theory soluble via Quantifier Elimination (QE) technology as usually implemented in computer algebra systems. Further, they all can be phrased in prenex normal form with only existential quantifiers and so are also admissible to those Satisfiability Module Theory (SMT) solvers that support the QF_NRA. There is a great body of work considering QE and SMT application in science and engineering, but we demonstrate here that there is potential for this technology also in the social sciences., Comment: To appear in Proc. We consider the use of Quantifier Elimination (QE) technology for automated reasoning in economics. There is a great body of work considering QE applications in science and engineering but we demonstrate here that it also has use in the social sciences. We explain how many suggested theorems in economics could either be proven, or even have their hypotheses shown to be inconsistent, automatically via QE. However, economists who this technology could benefit are usually unfamiliar with QE, and the use of mathematical software generally. This motivated the development of a Mathematica Package TheoryGuru, whose purpose is to lower the costs of applying QE to economics. A fibre optic multi-sensor has been developed for biomedical sensing applications using a tip coating solution sensitive to both oxygen and carbon dioxide. An oxygen sensitive phosphorescence quenching complex based on platinum octaethylporphyrin (PtOEP) was combined with a carbon dioxide sensitive phosphorescence compound based on 8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt (HPTS). When excited by blue light (470 nm), the resultant coating had two fluorescent peaks at 515 nm (green) and 645 nm (red) which responded to partial pressure of CO2 and O2 respectively. The sensor was tested in vitro and shown to be able to measure CO2 and O2 simultaneously and in real time, with calibration constants of 0.0384 kPa−1 and 0.309 kPa−1 respectively. The O2 sensitive peak received some overlap from the 515 nm peak (0.38% of peak intensity) as well as some cross-sensitivity (maximum, 5.1 kPa pCO2 gave a measurement equivalent to 0.43 kPa of O2, a ratio of 0.08 : 1). However, these effects can be subtracted from measurements and no significant cross-sensitivity or overlap was seen in CO2 measurements from O2. This novel compound presents great potential for use in medical sensors and we expect it to be important to a wide range of future applications.

Background Heart failure is a common secondary complication following a myocardial infarction (MI), characterized by impaired cardiac contraction and t‐tubule (t‐t) loss. However, post‐MI nano‐scale morphological changes to the remaining t‐ts are poorly understood. Method and Results We utilized a porcine model of MI, using a nonlethal microembolization method to generate controlled microinfarcts. Using serial block face scanning electron microscopy, we report that post‐MI, after mild left‐ventricular dysfunction has developed, t‐ts are not only lost in the peri‐infarct region, but also the remnant t‐ts form enlarged, highly branched disordered structures, containing a dense intricate inner membrane. Biochemical and proteomics analyses showed that the calcium release channel, ryanodine receptor 2 (RyR2), abundance is unchanged, but junctophilin‐2 (JP2), important for maintaining t‐t trajectory, is depressed (−0.5×) in keeping with the t‐ts being disorganized. However, immunolabeling shows that populations of RyR2 and JP2 remain associated with the remodeled t‐ts. The bridging integrator 1 protein (BIN‐1), a regulator of tubulogensis, is upregulated (+5.4×), consistent with an overdeveloped internal membrane system, a feature not present in control t‐ts. Importantly, we have determined that t‐ts, in the remote region, are narrowed and also contain dense membrane folds (BIN‐1 is up‐regulated +3.4×), whereas the t‐ts have a radial organization comparable to control JP2 is upregulated +1.7×. Conclusions This study reveals previously unidentified remodeling of the t‐t nano‐architecture in the post‐MI heart that extends to the remote region. Our findings highlight that targeting JP2 may be beneficial for preserving the orientation of the t‐ts, attenuating the development of hypocontractility post‐MI.

In this paper we report on the aims and on the first activities of this project, and formalise some relevant challenges for the unified SC2 community.

In recent years, large corpora of formally expressed knowledge have become available in the fields of formal mathematics, software verification, and real-world ontologies. The Learning2Reason project aims to develop novel machine learning methods for computer-assisted reasoning on such corpora. Our global research goals are to provide good methods for selecting relevant knowledge from large formal knowledge bases, and to combine them with automated reasoning methods.

We have examined polycrystalline MgB2 by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and density of state calculations. In particular, we have studied two different crystal orientations, [110] and [001] with respect to the incident electron beam direction, and found significant changes in the near-edge fine-structure of the B K-edge. Density functional theory suggests that the pre-peak of the B K-edge core loss is composed of a mixture of pxy and pz hole states and we will show that these contributions can be distinguished only with an experimental energy resolution better than 0.5 eV. For conventional TEM/STEM instruments with an energy resolution of ~1.0 eV the pre-peak still contains valuable information about the local charge carrier concentration that can be probed by core-loss EELS. By considering the scattering momentum transfer for different crystal orientations, it is possible to analytically separate pxy and pz components from of the experimental spectra With careful experiments and analysis, EELS can be a unique tool measuring the superconducting properties of MgB2, doped with various elements for improved transport properties on a sub-nanometer scale., Comment: 26 Pages, 5 figures, 1 table. We recently started the Formalin project to create a formal version of the C99 standard for the C programming language. We are writing three matching formalizations for the interactive theorem provers HOL4, Isabelle/HOL and Coq, that all closely follow the existing C99 standard text. The project runs from 2011 to 2015, and involves a full time PhD student, a half time researcher and several scientific advisors. The project differs from existing work in that our aim is to formalize the full C99 standard. This means that we treat the C preprocessor, the C standard library, floating point arithmetic, and 'dirty' C features like signal handling and volatile variables. Importantly, this means we also treat embedded C programs without explicit input/output.

Floating point operations are fast, but require continuous effort on the part of the user in order to ensure that the results are correct. This burden can be shifted away from the user by providing a library of exact analysis in which the computer handles the error estimates. We provide an implementation of the exact real numbers in the Coq proof assistant. This improves on the earlier Coq-implementation by O'Connor in two ways: we use dyadic rationals built from the machine integers and we optimize computation of power series by using approximate division. Moreover, we use type classes for clean mathematical interfaces. This appears to be the first time that type classes are used in heavy computation. We obtain over a 100 times speed up of the basic operations and indications for improving the Coq system.

We present several steps towards large formal mathematical wikis. The Coq proof assistant together with the CoRN repository are added to the pool of systems handled by the general wiki system described in \cite{DBLP:conf/aisc/UrbanARG10}. A smart re-verification scheme for the large formal libraries in the wiki is suggested for Mizar/MML and Coq/CoRN, based on recently developed precise tracking of mathematical dependencies. We propose to use features of state-of-the-art filesystems to allow real-time cloning and sandboxing of the entire libraries, allowing also to extend the wiki to a true multi-user collaborative area. A number of related issues are discussed.

A new algorithm to compute cylindrical algebraic decompositions (CADs) is presented, building on two recent advances. Firstly, the output is truth table invariant (a TTICAD) meaning given formulae have constant truth value on each cell of the decomposition. Secondly, the computation uses regular chains theory to first build a cylindrical decomposition of complex space (CCD) incrementally by polynomial. Significant modification of the regular chains technology was used to achieve the more sophisticated invariance criteria. Experimental results on an implementation in the RegularChains Library for Maple verify that combining these advances gives an algorithm superior to its individual components and competitive with the state of the art.

Cylindrical algebraic decompositions (CADs) are a key tool in real algebraic geometry, used primarily for eliminating quantifiers over the reals and studying semi-algebraic sets. In this paper we introduce cylindrical algebraic sub-decompositions (sub-CADs), which are subsets of CADs containing all the information needed to specify a solution for a given problem. We define two new types of sub-CAD: variety sub-CADs which are those cells in a CAD lying on a designated variety; and layered sub-CADs which have only those cells of dimension higher than a specified value. We present algorithms to produce these and describe how the two approaches may be combined with each other and the recent theory of truth-table invariant CAD. We give a complexity analysis showing that these techniques can offer substantial theoretical savings, which is supported by experimentation using an implementation in Maple., 26 pages

Objectives: To estimate the economic efficiency of tight blood pressure control, with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors or beta blockers, compared with less tight control in hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes. Design: Cost effectiveness analysis incorporating within trial analysis and estimation of impact on life expectancy through use of the within trial hazards of reaching a defined clinical end point. Use of resources driven by trial protocol and use of resources in standard clinical practice were both considered. Setting: 20 hospital based clinics in England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Subjects: 1148 hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes from UK prospective diabetes study randomised to tight control of blood pressure (n=758) or less tight control (n=390). Main outcome measure: Cost effectiveness ratios based on (a) use of healthcare resources associated with tight control and less tight control and treatment of complications and (b) within trial time free from diabetes related end points, and life years gained. Results: Based on use of resources driven by trial protocol, the incremental cost effectiveness of tight control compared with less tight control was cost saving. Based on use of resources in standard clinical practice, incremental cost per extra year free from end points amounted to £1049 (costs and effects discounted at 6% per year) and £434 (costs discounted at 6% per year and effects not discounted). The incremental cost per life year gained was £720 (costs and effects discounted at 6% per year) and £291 (costs discounted at 6% per year and effects not discounted). Conclusions: Tight control of blood pressure in hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes substantially reduced the cost of complications, increased the interval without complications and survival, and had a cost effectiveness ratio that compares favourably with many accepted healthcare programmes.

We revisit the classic problem of moving ladders of various lengths through a right-angled corridor. It has long been known that it is theoretically possible to tackle this problem through cylindrical algebraic decomposition (CAD): the valid positions of the ladder are described through polynomial equations and inequalities, which are then used to create a sign-invariant CAD. However, this formulation is too complex for use with current CAD technology, despite much progress in both CAD theory and hardware.We present a new formulation of the problem, by first considering the invalid positions of the ladder, negating this formula and using this as input for Qepcad (CAD software). We are then able to construct CADs for various lengths of ladder and analyse these through Qepcad’s two-dimensionalplots functionality. We speculate on the reason our new formulation is more appropriate for the problem, suggest alternative formulations and discuss future work.

It has long been known that cylindrical algebraic decompositions (CADs) can in theory be used for robot motion planning. However, in practice even the simplest examples can be too complicated to tackle. We consider in detail a ``Piano Mover's Problem'' which considers moving an infinitesimally thin piano (or ladder) through a right-angled corridor.Producing a CAD for the original formulation of this problem is still infeasible after 25 years of improvements in both CAD theory and computer hardware. We review some alternative formulations in the literature which use differing levels of geometric analysis before input to a CAD algorithm. These simpler formulations allow CAD to address the question of the existence of a path. We provide a new formulation for which both a CAD can be constructed and from which an actual path could be determined if one exists, and analyse the CADs produced using this approach for variations of the problem. This emphasises the importance of the precise formulation of such problems for CAD. We analyse the formulations and their CADs considering a variety of heuristics and general criteria, leading to conclusions about tackling other problems of this form.

Flow and stresses induced by blood flow acting on the blood cellular constituents can be represented to a certain extent by a continuum mechanics approach down to the order of the mu m level. However, the molecular effects of, e. g., adhesion/aggregation bonds of blood clotting can be on the order of nm. The coupling of the disparate length and timescales between such molecular levels and macroscopic transport represents a major computational challenge. To address this challenge, a multiscale numerical approach based on discrete particle dynamics (DPD) methodology derived from molecular dynamics (MD) principles is proposed. The feasibility of the approach was firstly tested for its ability to simulate viscous flow conditions. Simulations were conducted in low Reynolds numbers flows (Re = 25-33) through constricted tubes representing blood vessels with various degrees of stenosis. Multiple discrete particles interacting with each other were simulated, with 1.24-1.36 million particles representing the flow domain and 0.4 million particles representing the vessel wall. The computation was carried out on the massive parallel supercomputer NY BlueGene/L employing NAMD-a parallel MD package for high performance computing (HPC). Typical recirculation zones were formed distal to the stenoses. The velocity profiles and recirculation zones were in excellent agreement with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) 3D Navier-Stokes viscous fluid flow simulations and with classic numerical and experimental results by YC Fung in constricted tubes. This feasibility analysis demonstrates the potential of a methodology that widely departs from a continuum approach to simulate multiscale phenomena such as flow induced blood clotting. This study examined people's self-presentation motives in unstructured, everyday social interaction as a function of participants' gender similarity to, and general familiarity with, the targets of their self-presentations. Participants maintained a variant of the Rochester Interaction Record for 1 week. For every interaction that lasted 10 min or more, they rated the degree to which they wanted to make each of 4 impressions (likable, competent, ethical, and attractive), how much they thought about the impressions others in the interaction formed of them, and how nervous they felt in the interaction. In general, participants' self-presentational motives were lower in interactions with highly familiar people of their own sex than they were either in interactions with less familiar people of their sex or in interactions with people of the other sex regardless of familiarity. When participants' interactions with only their 3 most familiar interactants were examined, self-presentational concerns decreased with familiarity in same-sex interactions but increased with familiarity in cross-sex interactions.

We use density functional theory to quantify finite size and shape effects for gold nanoclusters. We concentrate on the computation of binding energy as a function of bond length for icosahedral and cuboctohedral clusters. We find that the cuboctoheral gold clusters have lower energy for 13 atoms. For 55 atoms we find that the icosahedral gold clusters have lower binding energy. We also introduce a one parameter family of geometries that interpolate between the icosahedral and cuboctohedral clusters that is parametrized by an angle variable. We determine the binding energy dependence on shape as a function of the angle variable for 13 and 55 atom clusters with a minimum at the cuboctohedral point and icosahedral point respectively. We also compute the binding energy for the 147 atom gold nanocluster and show that the binding energy of the icosahedral cluster is lower than the 147 atom cuboctohedral gold cluster. We also compute the binding energy of the $Au_{55}O_2$ molecule with possible applications to catalysis., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

We have developed a Scalable Linear Augmented Slater-Type Orbital (LASTO) method for electronic-structure calculations on free-standing atomic clusters. As with other linear methods we solve the Schr\"odinger equation using a mixed basis set consisting of numerical functions inside atom-centered spheres and matched onto tail functions outside. The tail functions are Slater-type orbitals, which are localized, exponentially decaying functions. To solve the Poisson equation between spheres, we use a finite difference method replacing the rapidly varying charge density inside the spheres with a smoothed density with the same multipole moments. We use multigrid techniques on the mesh, which yield the Coulomb potential on the spheres and in turn defines the potential inside via a Dirichlet problem. To solve the linear eigen-problem, we use ScaLAPACK, a well-developed package to solve large eigensystems with dense matrices. Electron pairing and ferromagnetism in various cluster geometries are studied with emphasis on tetrahedron and square pyramid under variation of interaction strength, electron doping and temperature. These exact calculations of charge and spin collective excitations and pseudogaps yield intriguing insights into level crossing degeneracies, phase separation and condensation. Criteria for spin-charge separation and reconciliation driven by interaction strength, next nearest coupling and temperature are found. Phase diagrams resemble a number of inhomogeneous, coherent and incoherent nanoscale phases seen recently in high T$_c$ cuprates, manganites and CMR nanomaterials., 5 pages, 5 figures

4-Hydroxyandrostenedione (4-OHA), a new specific aromatase inhibitor, was used to treat 57 post-menopausal women with advanced breast cancer at a dose of 250 mg by i. m. injection every 2 weeks; 55 women were assessable for response. In all, 18 patients (33%) had objective evidence of a response to treatment, with a median duration of 12 months; the disease stabilised in 8 (14%) patients. Serum oestradiol levels, which were measured weekly in nine of the patients, were found to be suppressed to a mean of between 36% and 51% of pretreatment levels during the first 6 weeks of treatment. Three patients were withdrawn from treatment because of toxicity (pain at injection site, sterile abscess and rash). One patient had an isolated episode of anaphylaxis after 6 months of treatment. In comparison with our previous reports of 4-OHA treatment, a dose of 250 mg given i. m. fortnightly appears to be the optimal dose regimen. The efficacy of the drug seems to be similar to that of tamoxifen and aminoglutethimide.

The exact numerical diagonalization and thermodynamics in an ensemble of small Hubbard clusters in the ground state and finite temperatures reveal intriguing insights into the nascent charge and spin pairings, Bose condensation and ferromagnetism in nanoclusters. The phase diagram off half filling strongly suggests the existence of subsequent transitions from electron pairing into unsaturated and saturated ferromagnetic Mott-Hubbard like insulators, driven by electron repulsion. Rigorous criteria for the existence of quantum critical points in the ground state and corresponding crossovers at finite temperatures are formulated. The phase diagram for 2x4-site clusters illustrates how these features are scaled with cluster size. The phase separation and electron pairing, monitored by a magnetic field and electron doping, surprisingly resemble phase diagrams in the family of doped high Tc cuprates., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Recently, there has been an increased interest in first-principles calculations of the actinides as well as in finding the new materials which display surface magnetism. We predict the existence of a magnetic moment on the uranium (001) surface by performing density functional calculations for a slab geometry in the generalized gradient and local spin density approximations with included spin orbit coupling. The ferromagnetic phase is energetically favored for all geometries. The calculated total magnetic moment, $0.65{\mu_{B}}$, is stable on films of different thickness and it should be observable experimentally., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Transactions of the Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian & Archaeological Society, 96, 228-230, `Santon' type bronze cauldron, found during peat cutting on Black Moss, High Grains, Bewcastle (Cumbria) in 1907 and donated to Tullie House Museum in 1947. The Carlingwark Loch (D&G) cauldron is very similar in appearance but has a different rivetting method. Comparison with Urlingford (Co Kilkenny) cauldron and the Santon Downham (Suffolk) example is also made. Extensive repairs indicate a high value to its owners/users.

We use synchrotron x-ray and precision electron diffraction techniques to determine accurately the structure factors of selected reflections that are sensitive to the valence electron distribution in the superconductor MgB2. These values deviate significantly from calculated structure factors using the scattering factors of free atoms, but agree well with our calculated structure factors based on density functional theory. Having experimentally established the reliability of our firstprinciple calculated structure factors, we present electron density maps of the redistribution of the valence electrons that takes place when hypothetical free atoms of Mg and B in MgB2 interact to form the real crystal.

The hypothesis of a locomotor role for the free rays of Trigloporus lastoviza is supported by: (1) their periodic retraction and protraction during slow displacement over the substratum whenever the propulsive body wave responsible for swimming is not visible; (2) the integration of the rays' individual cycles into a hexapod gait apparently generated by a metachronal impulse; and (3) the kinematic features of the longest free ray in relation to the bottom-walking velocity.

We report a phase I/II study of the indole derivative, zindoxifene, an anti-oestrogen with intrinsic oestrogenic activity. We have treated 28 women with advanced breast cancer of whom 26 had received prior endocrine therapy. Oral zindoxifene doses ranged from 10 to 100 mg daily; doses were escalated in some patients. Twenty-five patients were assessed for response; the remaining three patients completed less than 3 weeks of treatment. There were no objective responses; disease stabilised in seven patients for up to 5 months and progressed in the remaining 18. Five patients (including three treated with tamoxifen) responded to subsequent endocrine therapy. Nausea, which was dose-limiting, affected half of the patients treated with 80 mg daily. Metabolites of zindoxifene were detectable in serum at all doses used, and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) levels showed a strong tendency to rise at the higher doses, indicating that zindoxifene is absorbed and has biological activity. We conclude that zindoxifene in the doses used in this study has only marginal therapeutic activity in the treatment of advanced breast cancer.

This study sheds light on the evolution of aquatic and terrestrial feeding modes in vertebrates, using two aquatic turtles as models. The estuarine aquatic diamondback turtle Malademys terrapin has a feeding mechanism that is similar to the basic feeding mechanism of terrestrial tetrapods (jaw gape cycles incorporate slow opening, fast opening, fast closing and slow closing phases). Strikes upon prey also involve neck extension and cycles of the forelimbs. Malademys terrapin modulate their feeding behaviour and jaw action in relation to the nature of the prey item. Mussels are approached by walking on the substratum, and limb cycles are of small amplitude during the strike. Crabs, whether encountered in mid-water or on the substratum, are approached by swimming, and the strikes partly produced by vigorous upstrokes of the forelimbs, that occur simultaneously with neck extension. Crabs are dangerous prey, and the turtles often strike with the gape already at maximum, minimizing the time needed to bite a limb or other part of the crab. The tongue is not involved in food capture, but has a major role in food manipulation and transport prior to swallowing. Although transport cycles are similar to ingestion cycles, ingestion and transport are easily separable in the species. Malademys terrapin exhibit great distension of the throat during the strike, but this does not appear to generate adequate suction to aid capture of hard-shelled prey; it is suggested that throat distension reduces pressures in front of the advancing snout, thus preventing pressure waves displacing or alerting prey. The pelagic marine turtle Dermodielys coriacea, which specializes in gelatinous prey, relies heavily on suction for ingestion, which overlaps considerably with transport.

In 1992, a detection survey for Heterodera glycines (soybean cyst nematode) was conducted in 16 counties in Michigan. The nematode was detected in 12 counties, with absolute frequencies ranging from 6 to 100%. A total of 149 samples was collected, and 53% were infested with H. glycines. Eighty-four growers participated in the survey, and 38 had samples collected from more than one field. Of the 38 growers, 42% had all samples positive for H. glycines, 18% had some positive and negative fields, and 39% had all negative. A risk index was developed to quantify three types of risks: short-term, long-term, and border risk from neighboring counties. Soybean yield was regressed on H. glycines population density and number of years of soybean. Thirty-one percent of the variability in soybean yields was explained by H. glycines cyst population densities. Total number of years in soybean over the last 20 year period explained 19% of the variability in yields. In addition, H. glycines frequencies and population densities were inversely related to Pratylenchus spp. frequencies and population densities.

Assessment of healing of a scaphoid fracture, which may be associated with delayed fusion and nonunion, is a challenging task for the radiologist. Thirty cases of clinically suspected nonunion scaphoid waist fractures with inconclusive plain radiographs were prospectively studied by means of stationary tomography and lateral flexion-extension tomography. The angle between the two scaphoid fragments as seen in extension was measured and compared with the angle as seen in flexion. A difference of 10 degrees or greater between flexion and extension was considered significant. This was noted in 14 of 15 cases of nonunion. Fifteen cases without angle differences were accurately diagnosed as stable. One false-negative case was noted, which on review was attributed to a limited extension view. Flexion-extension tomography is a highly valuable diagnostic modality in evaluating the stability and healing of scaphoid fracture and is superior to conventional (stationary) tomography.
