Radiative cooling materials can cool terrestrial objects without any energy input but are susceptible to rain wetting and dust contamination, which affects badly their cooling characteristics. Herein, this work fabricated a radiative cooling porous film with superhydrophobic self-cleaning properties using poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). The PVDF-HFP/PVDF film consists of micropores with nanoparticles both inside and at the surface. The micro/nanostructures enhanced the scattering of solar light, which in combination with the infrared emissivity of both PVDF-HFP and PVDF polymers makes the film show excellent radiative cooling ability with a sub-ambient temperature drop of 16°C. The micro/nanostructures roughened the surface of the film, which in combination with the low surface energy property of both PVDF-HFP and PVDF polymers endows the film with superhydrophobic self-cleaning properties. The self-cleaning function defends the film from contamination and maintains sustainable radiative cooling for lasting applications. The integration of cooling and self-cleaning into a film paves the way for multifunctional and long-life radiative cooling materials.

In this study, a coal-fired power plant with an integrated S-CO2 cycle is proposed to improve the system operational flexibility. To optimize the performance, a control strategy of variable load regulation is proposed. First, a dynamic mathematical model of the system is established based on the conservation of mass and energy principles, and then, dynamic verification of the model is carried out. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed system, an exergy analysis is performed on the S-CO2 cycle, indicating that the exergy loss rate of the heater in the cycle is the highest. Finally, the dynamic performance of the system is simulated, and the dynamic response of the power generation load is analyzed. In addition, the system is evaluated based on the performance indicator of the flexibility of the power generation. It was found that the proposed system in this paper has a large load ramp rate which can quickly follow the load response. Meanwhile, compared with load downregulation, the system has greater potential for load upregulation.

Studying the anisotropy of seismic wave velocity can provide a theoretical basis for understanding the characteristics of seismic wave propagation in anisotropic media, such as forward modeling of seismic wavefield and simultaneous inversion of anisotropic parameters. It is an important work to calculate the group velocities of three kinds of seismic waves (qP, qS1, and qS2) and the analytical expressions of the partial derivatives of the group velocities with respect to 21 elastic parameters in general anisotropic media. Therefore, a new relationship between the phase and group velocity in general anisotropic medium is introduced first, and then the analytical expressions of the group velocity of three kinds of waves are deduced. Then the analytical formulas of partial derivatives of group (or phase) velocity with respect to 21 elastic parameters are derived. Finally, the distribution of partial derivatives of group slowness with respect to 21 elastic parameters with varied ray angles is analyzed and discussed. The final analytical expressions of group velocity and its partial derivatives are relatively concise and can deal with the singular points and multivalued problems of qS waves. By comparing with the numerical solution of the eigenvector method, the accuracy of the analytical formula of group velocity and its partial derivatives with respect to elastic parameters are verified. The numerical simulation results show that the algorithm can accurately obtain the partial derivatives of group slowness with respect to 21 elastic parameters, and would provide a theoretical basis for seismic ray tracing and traveltime inversion in general anisotropic media.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a kind of chronic skin disease with inflammatory infiltration, characterized by skin barrier dysfunction, immune response dysregulation, and skin dysbiosis. Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) acts as a regulator of immune response, positively associated with AD deterioration. Mainly secreted by keratinocytes, TSLP interacts with multiple immune cells (including dendritic cells, T cells, and mast cells), following induction of Th2-oriented immune response during the pathogenesis of AD. This article primarily focuses on the TSLP biological function, the relationship between TSLP and different cell populations, and the AD treatments targeting TSLP.

Excessive mechanical load (overloading) is a well-documented pathogenetic factor for many mechano stress-induced pathologies, i.e. intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). Under overloading, the balance between anabolism and catabolism within nucleus pulposus (NP) cells are badly thrown off, and NP cells undergo apoptosis. However, little is known about how the overloading is transduced to the NP cells and contributes to disc degeneration. The current study shows that conditional knockout of Krt8 (keratin 8) within NP aggravates load-induced IDD in vivo, and overexpression of Krt8 endows NP cells greater resistance to overloading-induced apoptosis and degeneration in vitro. Discovery-driven experiments shows that phosphorylation of KRT8 on Ser43 by overloading activated RHOA-PKN (protein kinase N) impedes trafficking of Golgi resident small GTPase RAB33B, suppresses the autophagosome initiation and contributes to IDD. Overexpression of Krt8 and knockdown of Pkn1 and Pkn2, at an early stage of IDD, ameliorates disc degeneration; yet only knockdown of Pkn1 and Pkn2, when treated at late stage of IDD, shows a therapeutic effect. This study validates a protective role of Krt8 during overloading-induced IDD and demonstrates that targeting overloading activation of PKNs could be a novel and effective approach to mechano stress-induced pathologies with a wider window of therapeutic opportunity. Background Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) clinical trials are evaluating its efficacy and safety for motor, sensory, and autonomic recovery following spinal cord injury (SCI). The perspectives of people living with SCI are not well known and can inform the planning, delivery, and translation of SCS. Objectives To obtain input from people living with SCI on the top priorities for recovery, expected meaningful benefits, risk tolerance, clinical trial design, and overall interest in SCS. Methods Data were collected anonymously from an online survey between February and May 2020. Results A total of 223 respondents living with SCI completed the survey. The majority of respondents identified their gender as male (64%), were 10+ years post SCI (63%), and had a mean age of 50.8 years. Most individuals had a traumatic SCI (81%), and 45% classified themselves as having tetraplegia. Priorities for improved outcome for those with complete or incomplete tetraplegia included fine motor skills and upper body function, whereas priorities for complete or incomplete paraplegia included standing and walking, and bowel function. The meaningful benefits that are important to achieve are bowel and bladder care, less reliance on caregivers, and maintaining physical health. Perceived potential risks include further loss of function, neuropathic pain, and complications. Barriers to participation in clinical trials include inability to relocate, out-of-pocket expenses, and awareness of therapy. Respondents were more interested in transcutaneous SCS than epidural SCS (80% and 61%, respectively). Conclusion SCS clinical trial design, participant recruitment, and translation of the technology can be improved by better reflecting the priorities and preferences of those living with SCI identified from this study.

Whether there is an association between SWI/SNF genomic alterations in tumors and response to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) remains unclear because prior studies have focused on either an individual gene or a predefined set of genes. Herein, using mutational and clinical data from 832 ICI-treated patients who underwent whole-exome sequencing, including sequencing of all 31 genes of the SWI/SNF complex, we found that SWI/SNF complex alterations were associated with significantly improved overall survival (OS) in melanoma, clear-cell renal cell carcinoma, and gastrointestinal cancer, as well as improved progression-free survival (PFS) in non–small cell lung cancer. Including tumor mutational burden as a variable, the multivariate Cox regression analysis showed SWI/SNF genomic alterations had prognostic value in melanoma [HR, 0.63 (95% confidence interval, CI, 0.47–0.85), P = 0.003], clear-cell renal cell carcinoma [HR, 0.62 (95% CI, 0.46–0.85), P = 0.003], and gastrointestinal cancer [HR, 0.42 (95% CI, 0.18–1.01), P = 0.053]. Furthermore, we used the random forest method for variable screening, identifying 14 genes as a SWI/SNF signature for potential clinical application. Significant correlations were observed between SWI/SNF signature alterations and improved OS and PFS in all cohorts. This suggests that SWI/SNF gene alterations are associated with better clinical outcomes in ICI-treated patients and may serve as a predictive marker for ICI therapy in multiple cancers.

The Multiple Stress Creep and Recovery test is recognised to better characterise the high-temperature property of bituminous binders than the traditional methods, especially for polymer modified bitumen (PmB). However, some experimental parameters may affect the test results, such as the preloading, measurement location, stress level. In this study, the effects of these parameters were evaluated through an interlaboratory experiment. Four bituminous binders were short-term aged and analysed by five different laboratories. The variability in most results met the requirements of the European standard, while some failed to pass the American precision criteria. The preloading at 0.1 kPa with ten cycles was found to have a recordable impact on PmB samples, but a less significant effect was observed for the unmodified ones. With the measurement locations, the influence is limited compared to other parameters. As for stress sensitivity, higher stresses lead to remarkable differences.

Efficient chemical synthesis is critical to satisfying future demands for medicines, materials, and agrochemicals. Retrosynthetic analysis of modestly complex molecules has been automated over the course of decades, but the combinatorial explosion of route possibilities has challenged computer hardware and software until only recently. Here, we explore a computational strategy that merges computer-aided synthesis planning with molecular graph editing to minimize the number of synthetic steps required to produce alkaloids. Our study culminated in an enantioselective three-step synthesis of (–)-stemoamide by leveraging high-impact key steps, which could be identified in computer-generated retrosynthesis plans using graph edit distances.
