This paper researches the role of English borrowings in some dialectal varieties spoken in South of Italy. It focuses on the study of English borrowing included in some dictionaries of some dialects of Southern Italy, with particular attention to the area of Avellino, which has been involved in emigration process since the last decades of XIX century. The present study questions if and how migrants played a role in the process of change of their own dialect of origin and, in particular, if their L2 had an impact on the dialectal varieties. In this paper, I will investigate (a) the presence of English borrowings in the lexicographic tradition of Irpinia dialects; (b) the process of integration of these loanwords.

The paper shows the preliminary studies for the University Campus ZEB Energy realization in Palermo. The particular location in the Mediterranean basin has required careful planning to resolve the problems related to high temperatures and humidity. For this reason has been employed strategies, elements and building materials that meet the requirements of sustainability and energy savings provided by law, in order to build a new building energy self-sufficient. The University of Palermo had the need to create new spaces to be used as classrooms for different types of education and especially of a space for conferences and conventions. This type of spaces is usually very energy eater because it must be kept a continuous very high interior comfort during the hours of use. To contribute passively to the conditioning of this space, especially during the long, hot summer months, it was set up a natural cooling system, which can contribute to the lowering of the internal temperature or most of the year. This system takes advantage of cool outdoor air intake by a shaded courtyard inside the building, in this courtyard was expected a tank of water and vegetation so that air can cool off naturally by contact. The air thus cooled introduced into the conference room through the iron grids, and generates an air movement that allows to lower the internal temperature of 3-4 C° compared to the initial one. The internal air movement is guaranteed by application of extraction grids in correspondence of the opposite wall, suitably designed to ensure a draw upwards and the consequent expulsion of the exhausted air. The study of the effective lowering of the temperature was carried out through a CFD simulation program that has also allowed us to identify the circulatory flow of air. The use of this simulation program has contributed to the design so that interior comfort has been guaranteed. For example the CFD simulation has allowed to arrange the seating so that the air distribution is not dangerous for the occupant. Thanks to this occasion we have developed an energy-saving strategy that could be shared under similar climatic conditions and collective spaces that consume a lot of energy.

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major health problem, with over one million events every year in Europe. However, there is a paucity of data on the current management in real life, including factors influencing treatment pathways, patient satisfaction, quality of life (QoL), and utilization of health care resources and the corresponding costs. The PREFER in VTE registry has been designed to address this and to understand medical care and needs as well as potential gaps for improvement. Methods/design: The PREFER in VTE registry was a prospective, observational, multicenter study conducted in seven European countries including Austria, France Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK to assess the characteristics and the management of patients with VTE, the use of health care resources, and to provide data to estimate the costs for 12 months treatment following a first-time and/or recurrent VTE diagnosed in hospitals or specialized or primary care centers. In addition, existing anticoagulant treatment patterns, patient pathways, clinical outcomes, treatment satisfaction, and health related QoL were documented. The centers were chosen to reflect the care environment in which patients with VTE are managed in each of the participating countries. Patients were eligible to be enrolled into the registry if they were at least 18 years old, had a symptomatic, objectively confirmed first time or recurrent acute VTE defined as either distal or proximal deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism or both. After the baseline visit at the time of the acute VTE event, further follow-up documentations occurred at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. Follow-up data was collected by either routinely scheduled visits or by telephone calls. Results: Overall, 381 centers participated, which enrolled 3,545 patients during an observational period of 1 year. Conclusion: The PREFER in VTE registry will provide valuable insights into the characteristics of patients with VTE and their acute and mid-term management, as well as into drug utilization and the use of health care resources in acute first-time and/or recurrent VTE across Europe in clinical practice. Trial registration: Registered in DRKS register, ID number: DRKS00004795

The windows in a building are the weakest part for energy saving and reduced consumption. In particular, the choice of window frames and glazing systems directly influences the amount of heat loss through a houses envelope. The paper will show the results of a work developed by PADesign srl company (Accademic Spin off of the Università degli Studi di Palermo). This is a software tool that allows a rapid comparison about the windows thermal performances, by calculating the global thermal transmittance and by showing the trend of the heat flow. The tool has a simple graphical interface that allows the users to select the climate data, the window typologies, the geometric features and the materials of window frames and glazing system. The tool calculates the global thermal transmittance and checks the compatibility with the limits set by Italian law. The possibility of immediately view the heat flow through an envelope of the selected combination allows you to identify the possible thermal bridges. It also allows to try out other combinations of the envelope stratigraphy, in order to optimize the choice of components providing the most suitable thermal performance. The tool can be implemented for all typologies of frames and glazing systems. Moreover, the software tools for evaluating energy efficiency and sustainability in buildings are very important to meet the restrictive requirements of thermal transmittance, provided by national and international regulations, and according to the Europa 2020 goals. It was developed in Java language to ensure portability across platforms. It uses a software library split that implements a self-contained, server less transactional SQL database engine. To generate outputs, the tool uses data and results provided by “LBNL WINDOW” and “LBNL THERM” software, for which we hold the commercial license. The software is aimed at a wide audience cause it does not require specific technical skills.

- Abstract

SummaryVenous thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in Europe. Data from real-world registries are necessary, as clinical trials do not represent the full spectrum of VTE patients seen in clinical practice. We aimed to document the epidemiology, management and outcomes of VTE using data from a large, observational database. PREFER in VTE was an international, non-interventional disease registry conducted between January 2013 and July 2015 in primary and secondary care across seven European countries. Consecutive patients with acute VTE were documented and followed up over 12 months. PREFER in VTE included 3,455 patients with a mean age of 60.8 ± 17.0 years. Overall, 53.0% were male. The majority of patients were assessed in the hospital setting as inpatients or outpatients (78.5%). The diagnosis was deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) in 59.5% and pulmonary embolism (PE) in 40.5%. The most common comorbidities were the various types of cardiovascular disease (excluding hypertension; 45.5%), hypertension (42.3%) and dyslipidaemia (21.1%). Following the index VTE, a large proportion of patients received initial therapy with heparin (73.2%), almost half received a vitamin K antagonist (48.7%) and nearly a quarter received a DOAC (24.5%). Almost a quarter of all presentations were for recurrent VTE, with >80% of previous episodes having occurred more than 12 months prior to baseline. In conclusion, PREFER in VTE has provided contemporary insights into VTE patients and their real-world management, including their baseline characteristics, risk factors, disease history, symptoms and signs, initial therapy and outcomes.

Energy-efficient retrofitting, Energy saving, Sustainability, Cost-benefits analysis ,Settore ICAR/10 - Architettura Tecnica - Abstract
The paper shows a work that was carried out by the authors as members of the PADesign Company, academic spin off of University of Palermo. Currently, energy retrofit of existing building has become an important goal, because it is now widely recognized that the buildings are one of the main causes of CO2 production and of non-renewable energy consumptions. To act on the energy performance of existing buildings (adapting their performances to those required by regulations) is an important strategy to reduce energy consumptions since they are much more than new buildings. Through the application of innovative technologies and methodologies and the choice of appropriate investments, the retrofit can also be an economic opportunity. The paper will present the result of a research about the convenience of the retrofit actions: it can be possible to evaluate the effectiveness of strategies proposed by examining an emblematic building and measuring the improvements obtainable through the energy requirements simulation according to the intended use. In this way it is possible to predict the final energy needs and to estimate the obtainable savings. A cost-benefits analysis allows to evaluate the proposed solution. This aspect will be addressed with special effort, in fact most of the energy retrofit action despite being efficient they don't take into account the high costs of interventions, discouraging the users.

Settore ICAR/10 - Architettura Tecnica ,Structural glass, Modular system, Building Design, Flexibility - Abstract
The aim is to design an architectural element flexible and easily adaptable to different urban situations using a material such as glass that, for the last years, is being employed as a structural element. The mass-production is rarely applied to glass construction systems that instead are usually designed case by case. The paper reports the results of a research carried out by the Dipartmento di Architettura and Dipartimento DICAM (Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile, Ambientale, Aerospaziale, dei Materiali), of the University of Palermo, within the project "VESTRA" (POFESR 2007/2013 - Action Line 4.1.1.1), that aims to the experimentation of mass-produced elements in structural glass. The prototype was designed to satisfy different urban contexts (public transports, rest areas, pedestrian path, etc.) ensuring the protection performances (from solar radiation and rainfall) required in these cases. The main achievable benefits are: - The design flexibility: from the basic module of 4 sqm it is possible to compose different elements obtaining surfaces of about 25 sqm. - The possibility of taking advantage of the characteristics of materials that, thanks to modern technology, can provide superior performance to other materials commonly used. Furthermore, glass is a recyclable material almost 100% and, unlike many other materials used for serial production can be recycled indefinitely; - The easy and quick assembly, allowed by the die-cast aluminum joint systems that simplify the implementation. The prototype may provide suggestions to use materials and technologies not yet used in the industrialization field.

In contrast with extensive information on the management of deep vein thrombosis of the lower extremities, little is known on the most appropriate treatment of the superficial vein thrombosis (SVT). In a multicenter, prospective, controlled, double-blind, double-dummy clinical trial, 164 consecutive patients with acute SVT of the great saphenous vein were randomized to receive the s.c. administration of either fixed prophylactic doses (2850 a-Xa IU) or body-weight adjusted therapeutic doses of nadroparin once daily for 1 month. The main study outcome was to compare the rate of asymptomatic and symptomatic extension of SVT and/or venous thromboembolic (VTE) complications during a 3-month follow-up period. Of the 81 patients randomized to the prophylactic doses, seven [8.6%; 95% confidence interval (CI), 3.5-17.0] developed SVT progression or VTE complications as compared with six of the 83 (7.2%; 95% CI, 2.8-15.1) allocated to the treatment group (absolute difference, 1.4; 96% CI, -6.9 to 9.7; P = 0.74). No patient in either group developed major bleeding. Our findings suggest that therapeutic doses of low-molecular-weight heparin, administered for 1 month in patients with SVT of the greater saphenous vein do not improve results obtained by prophylactic doses, administered for the same period, over a 3-month follow-up period.

METODO Il disegno di ricerca prevede la somministrazione dei seguenti questionari: The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) (Zigmond e Snaith, 1983); Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (COPE-NVI) (Sica et al., 2008); Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ-R) (Giardini et al., 2007); Toronto Structured Interview for Alexithymia (TSIA) (Caretti et al., 2011); World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL- Bref) (World Health Organization, 1993).
