The stability constants (log β), enthalpies of complexation (ΔH), and entropies of complexation (ΔS) for the complexes of uranium(VI) with a series of amine-functionalized diaetamide ligands, 2,2'-benzylazanediylbis(N,N'-dimethylacetamide) (BnABDMA), 2,2'-azanediylbis(N,N'-dimethylacetamide) (ABDMA), and 2,2'-methylazanediylbis(N,N'-dimethylacetamide) (MABDMA), in aqueous solution were determined by potentiometry and calorimetry. Electronspray ionization mass spectrometry was used to verify the presence of uranium(VI) complexes in solution. Resumen Objetivo Evaluar la utilidad de la copeptina para descartar de forma rapida y segura el infarto agudo de miocardio sin elevacion del segmento ST (IAMNST) en pacientes atendidos en un Servicio de Urgencias por dolor toracico agudo con electrocardiograma normal o no diagnostico y primera determinacion de troponina I (cTnI) negativa. Diseno Estudio prospectivo y observacional. Ambito Servicio de Urgencias de un hospital universitario. Pacientes Un total de 97 pacientes atendidos en el Servicio de Urgencias por dolor toracico sugestivo de sindrome coronario agudo de menos de 12 h de evolucion, con electrocardiograma no diagnostico y primera cTnI negativa. Intervenciones Ninguna. Variables de interes Datos demograficos y caracteristicas basales, copeptina en admision, cTnI en admision y a las 6 h, diagnostico final. Resultados El diagnostico final fue de IAMNST en 14 pacientes (14,4%), no observandose diferencias significativas en las concentraciones de copeptina entre ambos grupos, aunque se observo una tendencia a valores superiores en aquellos con IAMNST (mediana: 24,6 pmol/L [amplitud intercuartil: 42,0] vs. 12,0 pmol/L [16,1]; p = 0,06). El AUC ROC para la medida al ingreso de copeptina fue de 0,657 (IC 95%: 0,504-0,810), con un valor predictivo negativo del 92% para un punto de corte de 14 pmol/L. Conclusiones La determinacion de copeptina al ingreso en el Servicio de Urgencias en pacientes con dolor toracico ≤12 h sugestivo de sindrome coronario agudo, electrocardiograma no diagnostico y primera TnI negativa no permite descartar de forma rapida y segura la presencia de IAMNST, siendo necesaria la realizacion de medidas seriadas de cTn.

This paper presents a mixed method of inquiry into most of the public notions, shaping the Sudanese immigrant community’s perception Australia wide. Firstly, a qualitative review regarding two remarks by Australian public figures will be considered and analyzed; and secondly, Bayesian analysis (BA) will be considered to analyze the randomness of the crimes: BA, is a highly predictive methodological tool used in a wide range of applications. For example, in predicting of crimes based on prior occurrences of an offence or groups of offences. Thus, the Bayesian analysis considers the hypothesized relationship between ‘Ethnicity and Criminality’; the emphasis is on the recorded Crime figures involving immigrant youth of the Sudanese-born residing in the state of Victoria. The figures are drawn mainly from the Australian statistical agencies and media sources; the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), media reports, community’s prison population (CPP) and the overall Sudanese immigrant population in Australia (SIPA); comparative considerations with the overall Australian population (APP) and the Australian-born prison population (ABPP) from the years 2006 to 2007 will be looked into. The study concludes by suggesting the policy implication of this findings and future research directions.

Objective.Opioid analgesics may be prescribed to ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients with pain that is unresponsive to antirheumatic treatment. Our study assessed factors associated with opioid usage in AS.Methods.A prospective cohort of 706 patients with AS meeting modified New York criteria followed at least 2 years underwent comprehensive clinical evaluation of disease activity and functional impairment. These were assessed by the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI) and Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI). Radiographic severity was assessed by the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Radiology Index and modified Stokes Ankylosing Spondylitis Scoring System. Medications taken concurrently with opioids, as well as C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), were determined at each study visit, performed every 6 months. Analyses were carried out at baseline, and longitudinal multivariable models were developed to identify factors independently associated with chronic and intermittent opioid usage over time.Results.Factors significantly associated with opioid usage, especially chronic opioid use, included longer disease duration, smoking, lack of exercise, higher disease activity (BASDAI) and functional impairment (BASFI), depression, radiographic severity, and cardiovascular disease. Patients taking opioids were more likely to be using anxiolytic, hypnotic, antidepressant, and muscle relaxant medications. Multivariable analysis underscored the association with smoking, older age, antitumor necrosis factor agent use, and psychoactive drugs, as well as with subjective but not objective determinants of disease activity.Conclusion.Opioid usage was more likely to be associated with subjective measures (depression, BASDAI, BASFI) than objective measures (CRP, ESR), suggesting that pain in AS may derive from sources other than spinal inflammation alone.

The production of K 0 s, Λs and Λ s has been studied in a 280 GeV muon-proton scattering experiment with almost complete coverage of all kinematic regions. A study is made of the dependence of the multiplicities on the hadronic centre of mass energy, W , and of the Feynman x distributions. It is found that K 0 and Λ production is mostly central and increases strongly with W , whereas Λ production comes mainly from the remnant target system and is only weakly W dependent.

A total of 1,008 weanling pigs (12.0 lb and 19 d of age) were used in a 42-d experiment to compare different antibiotic regimens on growth performance and economic return. From d 0 to 11 and d 11 to 21, pigs were fed diets containing no antibiotic, a combination of Denagard (Novartis Animal Health, Greensboro, NC) at 35 g/ton and chlortetracycline at 400 g/ton (Denagard/CTC), or Pulmotil (Elanco, Greenfield, IN; 363 g/ ton from d 0 to 11 and 181 g/ton from d 11 to 21). From d 21 to 42, pigs previously fed Denagard/CTC or Pulmotil were fed diets containing no medication, Denagard/CTC, or a combination of Mecadox (Philbro Animal Health Corp., Ridgefield Park, NJ) at 25 g/ton and oxytetracycline at 400 g per ton (Mecadox/OTC). Adding Denagard/ CTC or Pulmotil to the diet from d 0 to 11 and d 11 to 21 improved (P 0.21) in ADG or ADFI between pigs fed Denagard/CTC and pigs fed Pulmotil; however, pigs fed Denagard/CTC tended to have better (P 0.17) in pig performance or IOFC between pigs fed Denagard/CTC and Mecadox/OTC. For the overall trial, adding antibiotics to the diet during any phase improved (P < 0.05) ADG, ADFI, F/G, and IOFC. These results demonstrate that adding antibiotics to the nursery diet improved pig performance and economical return on this commercial farm.

From d 10 to 21, diets contained no medication, Denagard/CTC, Mecadox at 25 g/ton and Oxytetracycline at 400 g/ton, or Mecadox at 50 g/ton. From d 21 to 42, diets contained either no medication or Denagard/CTC. Adding Denagard/CTC to the diet from d 0 to 10 improved (P 0.49). Overall, MOFC was increased when antibiotics were added to the diet from d 0 to 10 and d 10 to 21 when gain was valued at $0.50 or $1.00/lb and tended to increase (P < 0.06) when Denagard/CTC was added to the diet from d 21 to 42 when the extra gain was valued at $1.00/lb. These results demonstrate that adding antibiotics to the nursery diet improved pig performance and economical return on this commercial farm.

The UA1 Collaboration has recently improved its measurement of the beauty production cross-section by including explicit measurements of b b correlations. Using these data we have determined the strong coupling constant α s . The comparison of the measured cross-section for 2-body final states with O ( α s 3 ) QCD predictions yields a measurement of α s (20 GeV) = 0.145 −0.010 exp −0.016 th +0.012 +0.013 , corresponding to α s ( M z ) = 0.113 −0.006 exp −0.009 th +0.007 +0.008 . This is the first theoretically well-defined measurement of α s from a purely hadronic production process. Evaluating α s from cross-sections at different Q 2 -values we find that the running of α s is needed for internal consistency of the UA1 data.

Background Patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) are at higher risk for developing cardiovascular comorbidities. While aortic valve and conduction defects are most common, increased levels of LDL cholesterol are also seen. Statin usage has been reported to lower CRP and ESR though the power of these studies are limited due to small sample size and short-term follow-up (1,2). Objectives This study examines associations of statin usage with socio-demographic and clinical factors, including disease activity, functional impairment, and radiographic severity in patients with two years of follow-up or more. Methods 655 AS patients meeting modified New York criteria followed at least 2 years (and up to 12 years) were included in the analysis. Demographic and clinical parameters (disease activity and functional impairment were collected every 6 months, as well as radiographic assessments (BASRI and mSASSS) every 2 years. Univariable and multivariable mixed effect models were developed to identify independent factors associated with statin usage over time. Results Mean disease duration was 18 years (SD=13). 10% (n=66) of the cohort were using statins. Univariable longitudinal regression models are shown below: Multivariable longitudinal analyses controlling for confounders showed independent associations of age >40 years (p Conclusions Statin usage was, as expected, more likely in those of older age with greater disease duration and greater radiographic severity. Even though statins are known to reduce CRP, the association with markers of lower disease activity, both subjective (BASDAI on univariable analysis) and objective (CRP on both univariable and multivariable analyses), raises the possibility of a role in suppressing inflammation in patients with AS. We report on measurements of correlated\(b\bar b\) production in\(p\bar p\) collisions at\(\sqrt s = 630GeV\), using dimuon data to tag both theb and\(\bar b\) quarks. Starting from an inclusive dimuon sample we obtain improved cross-sections for single inclusive beauty production and confirm our earlier results on\(B^0 - \bar B^0\) mixing. From a study of\(b\bar b\) correlations we derive explicit cross-sections for semi-differential\(b\bar b\) production. We compare the measured cross-sections and correlations to\(\mathcal{O}\left( {\alpha _s^3 } \right)\) QCD predictions and find good quantitative agreement. From the measured angular distributions we establish a size-able contribution from higher order QCD processes with a significance of about seven standard deviations. A large nonperturbative contribution to these higher order corrections is excluded.

The nucleonic component of the cosmic rays has been studied during two voyages on the German research vessel Meteor (Fig. 1). The measurements were carried out from 10,8.1965 to 16.12.1965 (Atlantic Expedition IQSY, 1965) and from 1.8.1966 to 14.9.1966 (Greenland Expedition, 1966) at solar minimum activity. The investigations have been made using a IGY neutron monitor of standard device with BF3- counters (Simpson et al.). The monitor was electronically separated into two equivalent sections. The counting rates of each section were printed out every 15 minutes. The total counting rate of the monitor at high latitudes amounts to 11,600 events/h.DOI: 10.1111/j.2153-3490.1969.tb00458.x

We report on a new measurement of B 0 − B 0 mixing at the CERN SppS collider. Mixing is measured in the non-isolated high mass dimoun sample using data from the 1988–1989 collider runs. The measured value of the mixing parameter, χ, is 0.145±0.035(stat.) ± 0.014(syst.). The average of this measurement and that from our 1984–1985 data is ξ= 0.14 ± 0.029 (stat.) ± 0.017 (syst.) assuming fully correlated errors. Using the measurement of ξd from ARGUS and CLEO , we obtain χ = 0.50 ± 0.20, which gives a limit of χs > 0.17 (0.12) at 90% (95%) CL. Including the measurements of χ from the ALEPH and L3 experiments gives χs = 0.53 ± 0.15, and a limit of χs > 0.27 (0.23) at 90% (95%) CL.

A significant intermittency signal is observed in 630 GeV p p collisions measured in the UA1 central detector. It occurs with similar magnitude in different variables: pseudorapidity, rapidity and azimuthal angle. The signal increases with decreasing charged particle multiplicity in the event. Its strength in a sample of low p⊥ tracks and its multiplicity dependence are not reproduced by commonly used Monte Carlo models of high energy interactions.

We present a search for the decay W±→π±γ, using data taken at the CERN proton-antiproton Collider with the UA1 detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.7 pb−1. We do not observe a signal for such a process: hence we obtain an upper limit on the π±γ decay width of 5.8×10−2Γ (W±→e±v) (95%CL).

Results are presented on charged particle multiplicities and transverse and longitudinal momenta, and on total transverse energy distributions at centre of mass energies ranging from 0.2 to 0.9 TeV.

We report on a search for new heavy quarks decaying semileptonically into muons, using 4.7 pb−1 of data taken during the CERN\(p\bar p\) collider runs in 1988 and 1989. The properties of isolated muons accompanied by jets are consistent with the predictions from the Standard Model but do not show a signal for a new heavy quark. Combining all the UA1 data (5.4 pb−1), lower mass limits are obtained at 60 GeV/c2 (95% CL) for thet-quark and 43 GeV/c2 (95% CL) for a fourth-generation charge-1/3 quark (b′-quark).

The forward proton spectrometer is part of the H1 detector at the HERA collider. Protons with energies above 500 GeV and polar angles below 1 mrad can be detected by this spectrometer. The main detector components are scintillating fiber detectors read out by position-sensitive photo-multipliers. These detectors are housed in so-called Roman Pots which allow them to be moved close to the circulating proton beam. A search for multifractal structures, in analogy with multifractal theories, is performed on UA1 minimum bias events. A downward concave multifractal spectral function,f(α) (where α is the Lipschitz-Holder exponent), indicates that there are self-similar cascading processes, governing the evolution from the quark to the hadron level, in the final states of hadronic interactions.f(α) is an accurate measure of the bin to bin fluctuations of any observable. It is shown that the most sensitive comparison between data and the Monte Carlo models, GENCL and PYTHIA 4.8 can be made usingf(α). It is found that these models do not fully reproduce the behaviour of the data.

We report on the first observation of the beauty baryon Λb in an exclusive decay channel at the CERN p p collider. Using 4.7 pb−1 of muon data collected in the 1988/89 collider runs we reconstruct 16±5 Λb's in the decay mode Λ b → J ψΛ above a background of 9±1 events, corresponding to a significance of about five standard deviations. We measure the Λb mass to be mΛb=5640±50±30 MeV/c2. Using the beauty cross-section measured by UA1 we deduce for the product of the production fraction and branching ratio f Λ b Br (Λ b → J ψΛ )=(1.8±1.0)×10 -10 . Our sample contains three-muon event in which the beauty particle opposite to the Λ b is tagged by the third muon. We also observe an indication of a signal in the decay channel B 0 → J ψ K 0∗ with a significance of three standard deviations.

An analysis of W and Z boson production at UA1, using 4.66 pb −1 of data from the 1988 and 1989 CERN p p Collider runs at s =0.63 TeV , yields R ≡ σ W Br(W→ μ v)/ σ z Br( Z → μμ )=10.4 −1.5 +1.8 stat.±0.8(syst.) We find R =9.5 −1.0 +1.1 (stat.+syst.) when combining all available UA1 data, in both the electron and muon channel, taken in the period 1983–1989. In the framework of the standard model, the value of R is used to infer the total width of the W boson, Γ W tot =2.18 −0.24 +0.26 (exp.)±0.04(theory) GeV/ c 2 .

The scientific goals, design, capabilities, and status of the DUMAND II detector system are described. In June, 1989, the High Energy Physics Advisory Panel recommended support for construction of DUMAND II to the U.S. Department of Energy. Funding began in 1990, and prototype development for various detector subsystems is under way. Current plans include deployment of the shore cable, junction box and three strings of optical detector modules in 1992, and expansion to the full 9‐string configuration in 1993.

A search for t-quark decay into charged Higgs, t→H + b, with the charged Higgs decaying via the H + → τ + v τ mode, has been done in proton-antiproton collisions at √2 = 0.63 TeV with the UA1 experiment. No evidence for this decay das been observed. Mass limits at 95% and 90% CL for the t-quark and the charged Higgs are presented. The results have also been interpreted in terms of the tan β parameter of a two-doublet Higgs sector.

We report on a search for the decays B 0 → μ + μ − , B → μ + μ − X and B d 0 → μ + μ − K 0∗ , which are expected to be rare if mediated by flavor changing neutral currents. Using data collected during the 1984–1989 CERN pp Collider runs, the UA1 search was carried out using μ+ μ− events with 3.9 B 0 d →μ + μ − K 0∗ of of 2.3 × 10−5. Implicatitions for upper limits on the t-quark mass are discussed.

We have measured the production cross-section times branching ratio for J/ψ→μ+μ− in pp interactions at √s = 630 GeV in the kinematic range |y| and p T >5 GeV /c, BR ( J /ψ→μ + μ − )σ( p p → J /ψ)=6.18±0.24±0.81 nb . The data sample collected in 1988 and 1989 for an integrated luminosity of 4.7 pb−1 represents a fivefold improvement over the statistics in our earlier study of the J/ψ production process, and the pT distribution which is measured extends to 28 GeV/c. Using event topology we show that the rate for the direct production of J/ψ, via radiative decays of χ states, is larger than that for production via B-hadrons. Production of ψ′ is also studied using the decay modes

We report the observation of five muonic Z 0 decays. The mass and cross section times branching ratio is consistent with the previous measurements of Z 0 →e + e − . Three of the muonic decays have unexpected features. One event is of the type Z 0 →μ + μ − γ. Two of the Z 0 →μ + μ − decays are accommpanied by several (>4) energetic ( E T > 10 GeV) jets which are difficult to explain within the framework of standard QCD corrections.

The energy loss of high-energy muons due to photonuclear interactions has been calculated according to the Drell-Walecka and GVDM expressions using accelerator data. The inelastic structure functions have been used to extrapolate the cross section to the 100 TeV region. The total cross section, the transferred energy distribution and the energy-loss parameter bN are enumerated for applications with multi-TeV muon experiments.

An extensive study of production and decay properties of charged and neutral Intermediate Vector Bosons (IVB) at the CERN proton-antiproton collider is presented. Intermediate Vector Bosons were detected in the electron, muon, and tau decay modes at centre-of-mass energies of 0.546 and 0.630 TeV. This paper is a summary, based on all the available data from the UA1 experiment from the running periods 1982–1985. Results are presented and compared with expectations of the Standard Eletroweak Model and QCD-improved Drell-Yan annihilation processes. The general conclusion is that there is an excellent agreement between the predictions of the Standard Model and our measurements.

Bose-Einstein correlations have been measured at the SPS collider at centre-of-mass energies from √ s =0.2 to 0.9 TeV. The size and the incoherence parameter of the particle emitting region have been determined as a function of charged particle density in pseudorapidity Δ n /Δη, centre-of-mass energy and the direction of emission of the charged particles. For fixed values of Δ n /Δη the size of the interaction region and the incoherence parameter remain constant with rising √ s . At fixed √ s , the size of the interaction region increases with rising charged particle density while the incoherence parameter decreases.

Two-jet mass distributions have been measured as a function of centre-of-mass scattering angle for high-mass jet pairs produced in proton-antiproton collisions at the CERN collider operating at a centre-of-mass energy of 630 GeV. The agreement between QCD expectations and the experimental measurements has been used to place limits on the production cross section of an object X decaying into two jets. In particular we consider the existence of a massive colour octet of vector gauge bosons (axigluons). We exclude axigluons with a width ΛA

We summarize the results obtained in the UA1 experiment on the production of bottom quarks in proton-antiproton collisions at √ s =0.63 TeV. Independent muon data samples are used to determine the bottom quark production cross section in different transverse momentum ranges from 6 to 30 GeV. A recent theoretical calculation to O(α s 3 ) of the inclusive bottom quark transverse momentum spectrum in hadronic collisions shows reasonable agreement with the data. We extrapolate the integral P T distribution to P T =0 and in rapidity to estimate the total cross section forthe production of bottom quark pairs. Assuming the shape in P T and rapidity given by the O(α s 3 ) calcultaion, we obtain σ( p p→b b +X) = 10.2 ±3.3 μb .

A sample of events with large missing transverse energy from 715 nb −1 of data from the UA1 experiment at the CERN proton-antiproton collider is used to search for evidence of supersymmetric particle production. Assuming that the photino is the lightest supersymmetric particle and that it is massless, we find a limit on the squark mass of m q >45 GeV /c 2 at 90% CL, independently of the gluino mass. Similarly, we find a limit on the gluino mass of m g >53 GeV /c 2 (at 90% CL) independently of the squark mass, provided that the gluino is not long-lived (i.e. provided that the squark is not too heavy, m q ⪅1 TeV /c 2 ). For equal squark and gluino masses we find a limit m q =m g >75 GeV /c 2 at 90% CL. The effect of a non-zero photino mass on these limits is studied.

The charge ratio fo cosmic-ray muons with energies up to 1 TeV in the zenith-angle range 68/sup 0/--82/sup 0/ has been measured. The data clearly show an enhancement of the charge ratio with increasing energy thus indicating a ''normal'' mass composition of galactic cosmic rays.

We report the observation of five events in which a missing transverse energy larger than 40 GeV is associated with a narrow hadronic jet and of two similar events with a neutral electromagnetic cluster (either one or more closely spaced photons). We cannot find an explanation for such events in terms of backgrounds or within the expectations of the Standard Model.

Isolated photons, produced directly by a scattering process, have been observed in the UA1 experiment at the CERN p p collider at centre-of-mass energies √=546 GeV and √=630 GeV . Single and double photon differential cross sections have been determined and found to be consistent with the expectations of QCD.

Results are presented on two-jet and three-jet cross sections, measured in the UA1 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) pp Collider, at the highest available subprocess cms energies ( s >150 GeV ). Precise measurements of the two-jet angular distribution are consistent with previous results but show significant scale-breaking effects. The three-jet Dalitz plot and the three-jet angular distributions show evidence for final- and initial-state bremsstrahlung processes, in agreement with the leading-order QCD predictions. A comparison of the yield of wide-angle three-jet events with the yield of two-jet events at smaller scattering angles gives for the strong interaction coupling constant: α s ( K 3J K 2J )=0.16±0.02±0.03 at Q2≈4000 GeV2, where the factor K 3J K 2J may plausibly be assumed to be close to unity.

A sample of two-jet events from the UA1 experiment at the CERN pp Collider has been used to study the fragmentation of high-energy quark and gluon jets into charged hadrons. Compared with lower-energy jets observed in e + e − and pp collisions, the fragmentation function measured in the present experiment is softer (i.e. peaked to smaller values of z ) and the mean internal transverse momentum is larger, mainly because of the effects of the QCD scaling violations. Using our knowledge of the quark and gluon structure functions in the proton, together with the QCD matrix elements, a statistical separation of quark and gluon jets is achieved within the present experiment. The fragmentation function for the gluon jets is found to be softer, and the angular spread of the fragmentation products larger, than is the case for quark jets.

Muons of high transverse momentum p μ T have been observed in the large drift chambers surrounding the UA1 detector at the CERN 540 GeV pp collider. For an integrated luminosity of 108 nb −1 , 14 isolated muons have been found with p T > 15 GeV/ c . They are correlated with a large imbalance in total transverse energy, and show a kinematic behaviour consistent with the muonic decay of the Intermediate Vector Boson W ± of weak interactions. The partial cross section is in agreement with previous measurements for electronic decays and with muon-electron universality. The W mass is determined to be m W = 81 +6 −7 GeV/ c 2 .

We report the observation of 21 dimuon events at the CERN p p Collider with the UA1 detector. The events range in invariant dimuon mass from 2 to 22 GeV / c 2 . The properties of these events are given. The bulk of the events are consistent with heavy-flavour production (mainly b b ) with a few candidates for Drell-Yan production. There remain a few events which are difficult to interpret in terms of these processes, in particular two events with isolated, like-sign muons.

We report evidence for the production of the charged D∗ mesons in pp collisions at s = 540 GeV . The search was confined to the charged particle fragments of hadronic jets, which are expected to be predominantly gluon jets in this experiment. The fragmentation function and production rate for D∗ in jets of average transverse momentum of 28 GeV/c are given.

We report on a search for B0↔B¯0 oscillations (mixing) using events with two identified muons from data collected at the CERN p¯p collider. In the absence of B0↔B¯0 oscillations, dimuons coming directly from decays of beauty-antibeauty paris must have opposite signs. Like-sign dimuons are expected from events where one muon arises from beauty decay and the other from the charm decay of the associated beauty-charm cascade. Taking these processes into account, together with the contribution from charm production, the predicted ratio of like-sign to unlike-sign muon pairs is 0.26±0.03. Experimentally we measure 0.42±0.07±0.03. A natural explanation for the excess of like-sign events is the existence of a significant amount of B0↔B¯0 transitions. The fraction of beauty particles that produce first-generation decay muons with the opposite electric charge from that expected without mixing is deduced to be: χ = 0.121±0.047. Combined with the null result from searches for B0↔B¯0 oscillations at e+e− colliders, our results are consistent with transitions inthe B0s system, as favoured theoretically.

A cosmic ray magnetic spectograph for measurements of muon spectra and charge ratio at sea level in the high energy region has been constructed. This spectograph can be turned in a continuous way from a vertical to a horizontal position. The solid angle of the spectograph is defined by a telescope of four scintillation counters, the deflection of the muons takes place in a solid iron magnet, and the tracks are indicated by six double gap spark chambers which are photographed. The acceptance of the apparatus amounts to 15.8 cm 2 sr. The geometrical acceptance half-angle is 5.2° in the deflection plane as well as in the perpendicular plane. The lowest momentum that can be measured with the apparatus is 7 GeV/ c and the maximum detectable momentum is about 1 TeV/ c .

In this paper the characteristics of a cosmic-ray spectrograph which uses a solid iron magnet as the deflecting element are described. The particle tracks are registered by six spark chambers having double gaps. These spark chambers are triggered by four layers of G-M counters which are used also for a preselection of the momentum up to 50 GeV/c. The deflection power of the magnet, ∫B"∙dl, is 3.2 × 106 gauss-cm; the momentum range is 7–5 000 GeV/c; the collection power amounts to 7.1 cm2 sr, and the measured rate is 18/h.

Theoretical calculations are made for the latitude knee of the secondary cosmic rays. It is pointed out that there exist two latitude knees, one for the nucleonic and one for the muon component. The behaviour of the latitude knee is calculated in dependence of the particle's energy, of the atmospheric depth and of the solar activity. The results are compared with known experimental facts.

The vertical momentum spectrum and the charge ratio of cosmic-ray muons have been investigated in the range 0.3–25 GeV/c at a geomagnetic latitude of λ = 9 °N at sea level. The investigations have been performed by means of a magnetic spectrograph using the spark chamber technique for track location. The measured spectrum in the low-energy region is about 20% smaller than the spectra at high geomagnetic latitudes. The integral intensity for particles which penetrate more than 15 cm of lead is 7.25 × 10−3 cm−2 s−1 sr−1. The theoretical spectrum after Olbert is in agreement with our results.
