Abstract

A pilot study to investigate possible differences between a virtual reality-based neurofeedback and a traditional neurofeedback is presented. Neurofeedback training aimed to strengthen the emotional regulation capacity. The neurofeedback task is to down-regulate negative emotions by decreasing the beta band power measured in the midline areas of the scalp (i.e., Fcz-Cpz). Negative International Affective Picture System images were chosen as eliciting stimuli. Three healthy subjects participated in the experimental activities. Each of them underwent three VR-based neurofeedback sessions and three neurofeedback sessions delivered on a traditional 2D screen. The neurofeedback training session was preceded by a calibration phase allowing to record the rest and the baseline values to adapt the neurofeedback system to the user. For the majority of sessions, the average value of the high beta band power during the neurofeedback training remained below the baseline, as expected. In compliance with previous studies, future works should investigate the virtual reality-based neurofeedback efficacy in physiological responses and behavioral performance.

Abstract

Biosurfactants represent an ecosustainable alternative to conventional surfactants, allowing to reduce the environmental impact arising from the increasing production of industrial surfactant-containing formulations. In the present work, the physico-chemical properties of the aqueous solutions of rhamnolipids (Rha) are compared to those of sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), a widely used surfactant in many applications. Moreover, in view of a possible partial replacement, mixtures of these surfactants are analyzed. The surfactant self-aggregation in bulk solution is investigated by surface tension, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), finding that Rha and SLES form mixed aggregates whose morphology, dimension and internal structure depend on the composition of the mixture. An increase of the Rha content induces the formation of large micelles, with a compact inner core. A nonideal behavior of Rha-SLES mixtures is found, indicating antagonistic interactions between the two surfactants. Contact angle, emulsification and foaming measurements are carried out to investigate the functional behavior of the surfactant aqueous mixtures at the interface with solids, oil and air. Rha improves the wettability of hydrophobic surfaces but decreases the emulsion stability and the foamability. The results of the different experimental techniques are rationalized in a framework based on the molecular architectures, highlighting that the balance between the flexibility of the SLES headgroups and the bulkiness of the Rha ones allow tuning the mixture behavior, both in bulk and at the interfaces. Understanding the relationship between the physico-chemical properties of these mixtures and their functional behavior is strategic to steer the rational exploitation of Rha in green chemical formulations. In this direction, a comparative ecotoxicological assay is finally presented, whose results demonstrate the better profile of Rha compared to SLES.

Abstract

BackgroundPrevious studies showed that the epidemic of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-KP) observed in Italy since 2010 was sustained mostly by strains of clonal group (CG) 258 producing KPC-type carbapenemases. In the framework of the National Antibiotic-Resistance Surveillance (AR-ISS), a countrywide survey was conducted in 2016 to explore the evolution of the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of CR-KP isolates.MethodsFrom March to July 2016, hospital laboratories participating in AR-ISS were requested to provide consecutive, non-duplicated CR-KP (meropenem and/or imipenem MIC >1 mg/L) from invasive infections. Antibiotic susceptibility was determined according to EUCAST recommendations. A WGS approach was adopted to characterize the isolates by investigating phylogeny, resistome and virulome.ResultsTwenty-four laboratories provided 157 CR-KP isolates, of which 156 were confirmed as K. pneumoniae sensu stricto by WGS and found to carry at least one carbapenemase-encoding gene, corresponding in most cases (96.1%) to blaKPC. MLST- and SNP-based phylogeny revealed that 87.8% of the isolates clustered in four major lineages: CG258 (47.4%), with ST512 as the most common clone, CG307 (19.9%), ST101 (15.4%) and ST395 (5.1%). A close association was identified between lineages and antibiotic resistance phenotypes and genotypes, virulence traits and capsular types. Colistin resistance, mainly associated with mgrB mutations, was common in all major lineages except ST395.ConclusionsThis WGS-based survey showed that, although CG258 remained the most common CR-KP lineage in Italy, a polyclonal population has emerged with the spread of the new high-risk lineages CG307, ST101 and ST395, while KPC remained the most common carbapenemase.

Abstract

Aim Distal femoral shaft fractures are characterized by increasing incidence and complexity and are still considered a challenging problem. No consensus on best surgical option has been achieved. The aim of this study is to investigate mineral bone densitometry, radiographic and clinical outcomes of locking retrograde intramedullary nailing (LRN) and non-locking retrograde intramedullary nailing (NLRN) regarding surgical treatment of distal femoral shaft fractures in adults based on the hypothesis that there is no statistical difference among the results of both surgical options. Methods Retrospective study: 30 patients divided into 2 groups (Group 1 LRN, Group 2 NLRN). Average age was 42.67±18.32 for Group 1 and 44.27±15.11 for Group 2 (range of age 18-65 for both groups). Gender ratio (male:female) was 2.75 (11:4) for both groups. AO Classification, Non Union Scoring System (NUSS) and Radiographic Union Score Hip (RUSH), Visual Analogic Score (VAS), Dexa scans, plain radiographs were used. Evaluation endpoint: 12 months after surgery. Results No statistical difference was obtained in terms of surgery time, transfusions or wound healing. There were similar results regarding average time of bone healing, RUSH scores, VAS, regression between RUSH and VAS, average correlation clinical-ra-diographic results and patients outcomes. Only one patient of LRN group had reduction of mineral bone densitometry values. Conclusion No statistical difference in terms of radiographic, bone densitometry and clinical outcomes among LNR and NLNR for the treatment of distal femur fractures was found. The presence of no statistical difference regarding radiological findings is the main factor supporting our hypothesis given their strong objectivity.

8. Characteristics of flame-nucleated carbonaceous nanoparticles

Abstract

Flame-formed just-nucleated carbon nanoparticles, with sizes of about 2-10 nanometers, have been the object of increasing interest over the last decades not only because of environmental concerns but also as new procedure for synthesis of engineered nanoparticles. In this work, we present an experimental study on synthesis and characterization of carbon nanoparticles generated in a laminar premixed ethylene/air flame. The production of carbon nanoparticles of different sizes and properties is achieved by changing the particle residence time in the flame, i.e., collecting the carbon nanoparticles at different heights above the burner. Particle size distributions, Raman, UV-visible and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies have been used to characterize the sampled particles. The size of the particles increases as the residence time in the flame increases, the particle size distributions changing from a unimodal to bimodal. Chemical and structural modifications are retrieved by Raman and EPR analysis. Raman spectra show the G and D bands, typical of disordered carbonaceous materials. Their relative intensity and band position changes during the growing process and are used as index of structural changes. EPR spectroscopy, a powerful tool to probe electronic properties of carbon-based materials, reveals the presence and superposition of multiple paramagnetic species. Persistent carbon-centered aromatic radicals are detected for all the sampled particles and an abrupt change in the EPR signal is observed as the particle distribution changes from monomodal to bimodal. EPR indicate a three-dimensional structural organization when larger particles are formed. Optical proprieties are retrieved by UV-visible spectroscopy which, combined to Raman and EPR spectroscopy, seems to be powerful diagnostics to monitor particle clustering and to control the process of engineered carbonaceous nanoparticle production.

Abstract

The European Union (EU) initiative on the Digital Transformation of Health and Care (Digicare) aims to provide the conditions necessary for building a secure, flexible, and decentralized digital health infrastructure. Creating a European Health Research and Innovation Cloud (HRIC) within this environment should enable data sharing and analysis for health research across the EU, in compliance with data protection legislation while preserving the full trust of the participants. Such a HRIC should learn from and build on existing data infrastructures, integrate best practices, and focus on the concrete needs of the community in terms of technologies, governance, management, regulation, and ethics requirements. Here, we describe the vision and expected benefits of digital data sharing in health research activities and present a roadmap that fosters the opportunities while answering the challenges of implementing a HRIC. For this, we put forward five specific recommendations and action points to ensure that a European HRIC: i) is built on established standards and guidelines, providing cloud technologies through an open and decentralized infrastructure; ii) is developed and certified to the highest standards of interoperability and data security that can be trusted by all stakeholders; iii) is supported by a robust ethical and legal framework that is compliant with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR); iv) establishes a proper environment for the training of new generations of data and medical scientists; and v) stimulates research and innovation in transnational collaborations through public and private initiatives and partnerships funded by the EU through Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe. © 2020 The Author(s).

Abstract

Immunotherapy delivered a new therapeutic option to oncologist: Ipilimumab (anti-CTLA-4), Nivolumab and Pembrolizumab (anti-PD1) and Atezolizumab (anti-PD-L1) increase overall survival and show a better safety profile compared to chemotherapy in patients with metastatic melanoma, lung, renal cancer among others. But all that glitters is not gold and there is an increasing number of reports of adverse effect while using Immune-checkpoint inhibitors. While chemotherapy could weaken the immune system, this novel immunotherapy could hiper-activate it, resulting in a unique and distinct spectrum of adverse events, called Immunes-related adverse events irAEs. irAEs ranging from mild to potentially lifethreatening events can involve many systems, and their management is radically different from that of cytotoxic drugs: immunosuppressive treatments, such as corticoids, infliximab or mycophenolate mofetil usually results in complete reversibility, but failing to do so can lead to severe toxicity or even death. Patient selection is an indirect way to reduce adverse events minimizing the number of subjects exposed to this drugs: unfortunately PDL-1, the actual predictive biomarker wouldn’t allow clinicians select or exclude patients for treatment with checkpoint inhibitors.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the prevalence of diarrhea and its association with drug use in elderly outpatients. METHODS: The study was carried out by 133 general practitioners (GPs) who referred to 24 geriatric units in Italy. The demographic data, disability, gastrointestinal symptoms, and current medications were evaluated using a structured interview, including the evaluation of the activities of daily living (ADL), the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), and the gastrointestinal symptoms rating scale (GSRS). RESULTS: The study included 5,387 elderly subjects who regularly completed the structured interview. In total, 488 patients (9.1% of the whole population, 210 men and 278 women, mean age 75.6 6.2 yr, range 65–100 yr) reported diarrhea, that is, items 11 and 12 of the GSRS, during the 7-day period before the interview. The prevalence of diarrhea significantly increased with older age (P= 0.025), the severity of ADL (P < 0.0001) and IADL disability (P < 0.0001), and the number of drugs taken (P= 0.0002). A multivariate analysis demonstrated that the presence of diarrhea was significantly associated with the use of antibiotics (odds ratio [OR] 4.58, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.95–10.73), proton pump inhibitors (OR 2.97, 95% CI 2.03–4.35), allopurinol (OR 2.19, 95% CI 1.26–3.81), psycholeptics (OR 1.82, 95% CI 1.26–2.61), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (OR 1.71, 95% CI 1.01–2.89), and angiotensin II receptor blockers (OR 1.46, 95% CI 1.08–1.99), also accounting for sex, age, and the use of antidiarrheal agents and drugs for functional gastrointestinal disorders. CONCLUSION: Diarrhea is a common problem in elderly outpatients. Its prevalence increases with old age, the severity of disability, and the number of drugs. Monitoring the presence of diarrhea and its complications in elderly patients who need treatments with drugs significantly associated with diarrhea may be clinically useful.

Abstract

To verify whether it is possible, in people with diabetes mellitus (DM) considered at very high cardiovascular (CV) risk, stratify this risk better and identify significant modifiable risk factor (including lifestyle habits) to help patients and clinicians improve CV prevention. People with DM and microvascular diseases or one or more CV risk factors (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking, poor dietary habits, overweight, physical inactivity) included in the Risk and Prevention study were selected. We considered the combined endpoint of non-fatal acute myocardial infarction and stroke and CV death. A multivariate Cox proportional analysis was carried out to identify relevant predictors. We also used the RECPAM method to identify subgroups of patients at higher risk. In our study, the rate of major CV events was lower than expected (5 % in 5 years). Predictors of CV events were age, male, sex, heart failure, previous atherosclerotic disease, atrial fibrillation, insulin treatment, high HbA1c, heart rate and other CV diseases while being physically active was protective. RECPAM analysis indicated that history of atherosclerotic diseases and a low BMI defined worse prognosis (HR 4.51 95 % CI 3.04–6.69). Among subjects with no previous atherosclerotic disease, men with HbA1c more than 8 % were at higher CV risk (HR 2.77; 95 % CI 1.86–4.14) with respect to women. In this population, the rate of major CV events was lower than expected. This prediction model could help clinicians identify people with DM at higher CV risk and support them in achieving goals of physical activity and HbA1c.

Abstract

Sono state condotte prove su ortive diverse, nei confronti del nematode cistiforme della carota (Heterodera carotae) e dei galligeni (Meloidogyne spp.), per valutare l’efficacia dell’applicazione del bionematocida Flocter® 5% PB a base di Bacillus firmus ceppo I-1582. I risultati hanno messo in evidenza che B. firmus non modifica la sua performance se applicato in dose singola (80 kg/ha) o frazionata (40 + 40 Kg/ha). Svolge un’azione di contenimento dei danni, oltre che dei galligeni, anche del fungo fitopatogeno Pyrenochaeta lycopersici. Ciò è da correlare ad un più rilevante sviluppo delle piante, che mostrano una maggiore attività fotosintetica (indice di SPAD), e, soprattutto, agli incrementi quanti-qualitativi delle produzioni. Appare inoltre evidente che, in presenza di infestazioni elevate, è necessaria l’integrazione con un altro mezzo e la solarizzazione può essere il partner ideale. Abstract

In the Mediterranean Sea, the biological invasion by the green algae Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea is maybe the most striking marine sea-bottom landscape change of the last decades. In this paper, we have synthesized the results of 5 years of studies about the C. cylindracea effects on fish of ecological and economic importance, such as the white sea bream Diplodus sargus. We found that secondary metabolite of C. cylindracea has the potential to enter in trophic chains and accumulate in fish tissues. Ecotoxicological analyses made on tissues of the D. sargus specimens showed alterations of some of main antioxidant systems, such as catalase, glutathione peroxidases and total glutathione, and a significant induction of P450 biotransformation system. We found also that the C. cylindracea based-diet can alter muscle fatty acids composition in the white sea bream by reducing the percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) of the n-3 and n-6 series, such as eicosapentaenoic (EPA, C20:5), docosahexaenoic (DHA, C22:6) and arachidonic acids (AA, C20:4). On the whole, this work sheds light on an unexplored and critical aspect of biological invasions with implication on the health of both humans and the environment.

22. Superior antioxidant properties of DHICA melanin: toward exploitation of melanin as multifunctional materials for technological applications

Abstract

Most of the biological and application-oriented studies of synthetic melanins have so far been performed on commercial materials or on dopa melanins with low DHICA content, although it is well known that DHICA is a key constituent of human pigments. Recently, it has been reported that DHICA melanin exhibits potent hydroxyl radical-scavenging properties in the Fenton reaction, whereas DHI melanin does not (Jiang et al., Free Radic. Biol. Med. 2010, 48, 1144–1151). We show now that synthetic DHICA melanin is a highly efficient antioxidant compared to other synthetic eumelanins, proving to be a more efficient scavenger than DHI or dopa melanin in the 1,1-diphenyl- 2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6- sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and nitric oxide (NO) scavenging assays. Analysis of the optical, paramagnetic and morphological properties of DHICA melanin revealed features far different from those of DHI and dopa melanins. These can be accounted for by prevalent intermolecular interactions compensating for conformationally-hindered p-electron delocalization across the polymer backbone. Thus the somewhat counterintuitive conclusion is that the efficient antioxidant properties of DHICA melanin would be primarily determined by non-planar structures with monomer-like behavior and weak aggregating interactions. Formation of weak aggregates may account moreover for a greater accessibility of free radicals to DHICA compared to compact p- stacked DHI and dopa melanins. These results offer the first chemical explanation as to why Nature selected DHICA to confer (photo)protective properties to skin melanins, a fundamental conundrum of human pigmentation, and provide unprecedented insights to orient the design and to engineer eumelanins with superior antioxidant properties for diverse applications.

The effectiveness of soil solarization, alone or in combination with oxamyl or a plant-derived formulation (a mixture of aqueous extracts of Quillaja saponaria Molina , Yucca schidigera Roezl and Tagetes spp., 80, 10 and 10%, respectively), for the control of the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid et White) Chitw. was assessed in a greenhouse trial on tomato at Battipaglia (province of Salerno), Southern Italy. The combination of soil solarization with the plant-derived formulation resulted in a greater nematode suppression than application of single treatments. Combining soil solarization with the plant-derived formulation resulted in tomato yield and fruit size similar to that of the combination of soil solarization with oxamyl. Therefore the combination of soil solarization with plant-derived formulations may represent a sustainable nematode control strategy, as safe for human health and environment.

The effectiveness of two plant-derived formulations for the control of the root-knot Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid et White) Chitw. was evaluated in a protected tomato crop in Southern Italy. A neem oil-based formulation and a commercial mixture of aqueous extracts of Quillaja saponaria Molina (80%), Yucca schidigera Roezl (10%) and Tagetes spp. (10%) were tested in comparison with the standard chemical oxamyl and an untreated control. All tested formulations significantly decreased soil nematode population and average root galling compared to the untreated control. However, nematode infestation was found significantly lower in plots treated with oxamyl or neem formulation than in those treated with quillay-based product. Tomato yield did not significantly differ among treatments. Satisfactory yield obtained by quillay-based product appears to be caused by the biostimulating effect of quillay extract on tomato plants.

A trial was conducted in vitro to assess the effectiveness of the experimental formulation Tequil, a blend of plant extracts (100% aqueous extract of Quillaja saponaria, Yucca schidigera and Tagetes spp.), on motility of second-stage juveniles (J2) of the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita and of the cyst nematode Heterodera daverti. The effects of three concentrations (2.5, 5 and 10 ml/L H2O) of Tequil were compared with those of a control and ethoprophos (1.5 ml/L H2O) after different exposure times (2 to 24 days). All concentrations of Tequil suppressed the motility of J2 of M. incognita, throughout the observation period compared to water control, however, the 2.5 ml/L only reduced movement during the first 10 days. Similar effects were observed with H. daverti. For both nematodes, the nematicidal activity increased with the increase of the concentration of Tequil and exposure time. However, ethoprophos was more effective than Tequil during the first 18 days of exposure. Moreover,removing J2 from Tequil solutions after 6 days and transferring them to water for up to 240 h, revealed that a proportion of them resumed motility. This indicates that, at least at the tested concentrations, Tequil, besides a nematicidal activity, has a nematostatic effect.

The clinical efficacy of SLIT has been established in a number of clinical trials and meta-analyses. However, because SLIT is self-administered by patients without medical supervision, the degree of patient adherence with treatment is still a concern. The objective of this study was to evaluate the perception by allergists of issues related to SLIT adherence.Methods: We performed a questionnaire-based survey of 296 Italian allergists, based on the adherence issues known from previous studies. The perception of importance of each item was assessed by a VAS scale ranging from 0 to 10.Results: Patient perception of clinical efficacy was considered the most important factor (ranked 1 by 54% of allergists), followed by the possibility of reimbursement (ranked 1 by 34%), and by the absence of side effects (ranked 1 by 21%). Patient education, regular follow-up, and ease of use of SLIT were ranked first by less than 20% of allergists.Conclusion: These findings indicate that clinical efficacy, cost, and side effects are perceived as the major issues influencing patient adherence to SLIT, and that further improvement of adherence is likely to be achieved by improving the patient information provided by prescribers.Keywords: adherence, sublingual immunotherapy, efficacy, cost, side effects

Abstract

A numerical methodology to simulate the high pressure spray evolution and the fuel-air mixing in Diesel engines is presented. Attention is focused on the employed atomization model, a modified version of the Huh and Gosman, on the definition of a turbulence length scale limiter and of an adaptive local mesh refinement technique to minimize the result grid dependency. All the discussed models were implemented into Lib-ICE, which is a set of libraries and solvers, specifically tailored for engine simulations, which runs under the open-source CFD technology OpenFOAM®. To provide a comprehensive assessment of the proposed methodology, the validation procedure consisted into simulating, with a unique and coherent set-up of all models, two different set of experiments: a non-evaporating Diesel fuel spray in a constant-volume vessel with optical access and an evaporating non-reacting Diesel fuel spray in an optical engine. The first of these experiments were carried out by the authors by analyzing optical pictures of the jets taken at different instants by imaging technique. A Common-Rail based injection apparatus was used for injecting commercial Diesel fuel at pressures ranging from 50 to 123 MPa inside a constant volume vessel at engine-like density conditions and operating in single shot mode. Literature data were then used to validate the vapor fuel-air mixing at engine conditions.

E’ stata valutata l’efficacia di una macchina producente vapore abbinata a sostanze a reazione esotermica in 2 prove condotte in terreni annualmente coltivati a garofano gravemente infestati da Heterodera daverti e Fusarium oxysporum f.sp.dianthi. Il controllo non è risultato valido soprattutto per Fusarium.

Abstract

In the Mediterranean Sea, the biological invasion by the green algae Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea is maybe the most striking marine sea-bottom landscape change of the last decades. In this paper, we have synthesized the results of 5 years of studies about the C. cylindracea effects on fish of ecological and economic importance, such as the white sea bream Diplodus sargus. We found that a secondary metabolite of C. cylindracea has the potential to enter in trophic chains and accumulate in fish tissues. Ecotoxicological analyses made on tissues of the D. sargus specimens showed alterations of some of main antioxidant systems, such as catalase, glutathione peroxidases and total glutathione, and a significant induction of P450 biotransformation system. We found also that the C. cylindracea based-diet can alter muscle fatty acids composition in the white sea bream by reducing the percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) of the n-3 and n-6 series, such as eicosapentaenoic (EPA, C20:5), docosahexaenoic (DHA, C22:6) and arachidonic acids (AA, C20:4). On the whole, this work sheds light on an unexplored and critical aspect of biological invasions with implication on the health of both humans and the environment.

Abstract

Este trabajo analiza históricamente el nacimiento y el desarrollo del Movimiento Freinet en España, es decir, del Movimiento Cooperativo de Escuela Popular (MCEP), que pertenece a la Federación Internacional de los Movimientos de Escuela Moderna y que, adherido a la pedagogía popular y cooperativa freinetiana, se inserta en el marco variado de la renovación pedagógica. Se expone, por lo tanto, un análisis histórico del MCEP, recorriendo las etapas de difusión de la Pedagogía Freinet en España. Además, se describen los principios educativos que guían la acción de los educadores del MCEP y las técnicas de enseñanza adoptadas por ellos. Esos principios y esas técnicas, que valorizan la capacidad expresiva y reactiva de los alumnos, coinciden con los principios pedagógicos y las técnicas didácticas elaborados por Célestin Freinet, cuya propuesta pedagógica representa aún hoy una manera peculiar de realizar la práctica educativa en la escuela, contribuyendo a una mejora del proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje., This paper analyzes historically the origin and the development of Freinet Movement in Spain: the Cooperative Movement of people's school (MCEP), which belongs to the International Federation of Moderne School Movements and which, complying with people's and cooperative pedagogy of Célestin Freinet, inserts itself in the varied frame of the educational renewal. It illustrates an historical analysis of MCEP, retracing the stages of Freinet Pedagogy diffusion in Spain. Moreover, it describes the educational principles that guide the action of the MCEP educators, as well as the teaching techniques adopted by them. Abstract

Infestation of root-knot nematodes Meloidogyne incognita on Calendula officinalis and M. hapla on Paeonia lactiflora, two flower plants of new introduction in Campania, have been for the first time in Italy. The determination of the species was based on perineal patterns and on the ratio between the distance from the cephalic area end to excretory pore and stylet length (EP/St). The infestations cause damage of tolerable entity on marigold, the most serious on peony. For both species have been also reported major bioecological data particularly relevant for the times and modality of nematodes control.

Abstract

The combined presence of Pratylenchus vulnus Allen et Jensen and Cylindrocarpon destructans (Zins.) Scholten, on rose (Rosa canina Linn.), in soilless culture and in field is reported. The morphobiometrical data of the nematode and the fungus and some information on their biology, geographical distribution, pathogenicity and relative damages are described. On the ground of the observations performed, Authors reached the conclusion that harmful organisms may cause greater damages on soilless than on field cultures. This can be explained by the fact that plant parasites and pathogens usually do not find antagonists in a hydroponic habitat. In case of replant a choice not to be underrated concerns the convenience to recover the old substrate or to replace it with a new one. The recovery needs a sterilization, very onerous treatment, also the new substrate is cause of problems of not little entity for the discharge of the old ones. It is emphasized, at last, the importance, above all in soilless cultures, of the use of certified material in the new systems.

The nematicidal activity of the organic formulation Ecoessen®NP was investigated against Meloidogyne incognita on pepper in a greenhouse. Different application methods of the formulation were tested in comparison with fenamiphos and non treated soil. The different treatments increased yield quantity and quality. However application of Ecoessen NP resulted in crop yield higher than treatments with fenamiphos.

Abstract

The incidence of erythromycin resistance and the phenotypic pattern of resistance have been studied in 130 group A β-hemolytic streptococcus (GABHS) strains, isolated from throat swab obtained in children affected by acute pharyngotonsillitis. A total of 56 (43%) GABHS strains of 130 were resistant to erythromycin. Among these 56 strains, we found that 7 (12.5%), 18 (32.1%) and 31 (55.3%) showed the cMLS, iMLS and M phenotype, respectively. The iMLS and M phenotypes appear to be the most widely represented ones. Their low level of resistance to macrolides could allow the use of the more recent macrolides characterized by higher tissue concentration which could overcome such a resistance.
