Aims: To develop a model to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of 4 mg dibotermin alfa/absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) versus iliac crest bone graft (ICBG) in patients with lumbar degenerative disc disease in the United Kingdom. Materials & methods: A Markov decision-analytic model was constructed to calculate costs and quality-adjusted life-years over a 4-year time horizon in each treatment group, from a United Kingdom National Health Service perspective. An individual patient data meta-analysis was undertaken to synthesize data from four randomized controlled trials and two single-arm studies concerning health-related quality of life and procedural resource use. Current cost data from the United Kingdom were then applied to determine the overall mean cost per patient in each group. One-way and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were undertaken to explore the impact of parameter uncertainty. Results: The model predicted 4-year discounted cost savings of £192 per patient treated with dibotermin alfa/ACS, compared with ICBG, and a gain of 0.0114 QALYs per patient over the same time period. Sensitivity analyses indicated that the results were most sensitive to variability in the differences in health-related quality of life and secondary surgery rate, with dibotermin alfa/ACS having a 60% probability of being cost-effective at a willingness-to-pay threshold of £20,000 per QALY gained. Limitations: There is uncertainty in the difference in cost and QALYs between the two groups. However, comprehensive sensitivity analyses were undertaken to explore this and present the results in a transparent manner. Conclusions: Our results provide an economic case for the use of 4 mg dibotermin alfa/ACS versus iliac crest bone graft, with additional health benefits predicted at reduced overall cost.

By combining information such as genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics data, multi-omics methodologies have the potential to reveal the otherwise invisible processes of carcinogenesis. Using these data, a new generation point-of-care (POC) devices may support patient care through rapid diagnosis involving accurate and simultaneous multi-omics measurements. In this work we present a proof-of-concept portable system capable of measuring a metabolite (glutamate) and a protein (proteolytically active prostate-specific antigen - aPSA) simultaneously on single device in a two-minute interval using on-chip optical methods. The device has the potential to improve the current diagnostic pathways of prostate cancer by reducing the high false-positive rate with the widely used total prostate-specific antigen test. We demonstrate simultaneous assay of glutamate and aPSA in buffer and synthetic urine. For the glutamate assay, the limit of detection (LOD) and resolution were found to be 0.9 μM and 2.7 μM. LOD and resolution for aPSA were 0.5 ng/ml and 2.0 ng/ml. The LOD and resolution achieved using this device are therefore in line with human physiological ranges. The platform is suitable for accommodating two independent optical assays therefore chemistry can be modified to measure different analytes regardless of their nature. This technological breakthrough has the potential to deliver an accurate multi-omics portable device for prostate cancer and may be extended to other diseases.

The detection of metabolites such as choline in blood are important in clinical care for patients with cancer and cardiovascular disease. Choline is only present in human blood at low concentrations hence accurate measurement in an affordable point-of-care format is extremely challenging. Integration of microfluidics on to complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology has the potential to enable advanced sensing technologies with extremely low limit of detection that are well suited to multiple clinical metabolite measurements. Although CMOS and microfluidics are individually mature technologies, their integration has presented challenges that we overcome in a novel, cost-effective, single-step process. To demonstrate the process, we present the microfluidic integration of a metabolomics-on-CMOS point-of-care platform with four capillary microfluidic channels on top of a CMOS optical sensor array. The fabricated device was characterised to verify the required structural profile, mechanical strength, optical spectra, and fluid flow. As a proof of concept, we used the device for the in-vitro quantification of choline in human blood plasma with a limit of detection of 3.2 M and a resolution of 1.6 M.

Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) modes have attracted extensive interests due to its ultrasmall mode volume resulting in extremely strong light-matter interaction (LMI) for active optoelectronic devices. The ENZ modes can be electrically toggled between on and off states with a classic metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) configuration and therefore allow access to electro-absorption (E-A) modulation. Relying on the quantum confinement of charge-carriers in the doped semiconductor, the fundamental limitation of achieving high modulation efficiency with MIS junction is that only a nanometer-thin ENZ confinement layer can contribute to the strength of E-A. Further, for the ENZ based spatial light modulation, the requirement of resonant coupling inevitably leads to small absolute modulation depth and limited spectral bandwidth as restricted by the properties of the plasmonic or high-Q resonance systems. In this paper, we proposed and demonstrated a dual-ENZ mode scheme for spatial light modulation with a TCOs/dielectric/silicon nanotrench configuration for the first time. Such a SIS junction can build up two distinct ENZ layers arising from the induced charge-carriers of opposite polarities adjacent to both faces of the dielectric layer. The non-resonant and low-loss deep nanotrench framework allows the free space light to be modulated efficiently via interaction of dual ENZ modes in an elongated manner. Our theoretical and experimental studies reveal that the dual ENZ mode scheme in the SIS configuration leverages the large modulation depth, extended spectral bandwidth together with high speed switching, thus holding great promise for achieving electrically addressed spatial light modulation in near- to mid-infrared regions.

In this paper, we investigate the self-mixing effect of planar Gunn diode oscillators numerically and experimentally. The simulation shows a 4 μm long GaAs-based heterostructure planar Gunn diode can generate not only an oscillation frequency of 27.5 GHz but also a down-converted signal of 2.5 GHz when an external signal of 30 GHz is injected to the diode. The conversion loss varies between 14 dB and 20 dB depending on the biasing condition as well as the amplitude and frequency of the input signal. Experiments confirmed the simulation results. The self-mixing effect of planar Gunn oscillators show a great potential for simplifying RF frontends for millimeter-wave applications such as 5G and beyond communications, radar, and imaging systems.

Haemophilia is predominantly an inherited disorder that impairs the body’s ability to make blood clots, a process needed to stop bleeding. The condition of this disease is complex to manage, but many patients do so through home therapy and often only see their core multidisciplinary healthcare team annually. There is an increasing need for patients to be able to monitor their condition efficiently at home while staying connected with their healthcare team. As a consequence, a low-cost handheld self-monitoring solution for clotting factor is required. Here we have demonstrated a suitable one-step Factor VIII companion diagnostic sensing approach based on a chromogenic assay for haemophilia A. The results show comparable performance to the gold standard method. Our approach is able to deliver accurate cost-effective results in under 5 min from undiluted human plasma. It has the potential to be able to reduce the human and monetary costs of over- or under-medication for haemophiliacs.

The polarization state of light is a key parameter in many imaging systems. For example, it can image mechanical stress and other physical properties that are not seen with conventional imaging, and can also play a central role in quantum sensing. However, polarization is more difficult to image and polarimetry typically involves several independent measurements with moving parts in the measurement device. Metasurfaces with interleaved designs have demonstrated sensitivity to either linear or circular/elliptical polarization states. Here we present an all-dielectric meta-polarimeter for direct measurement of any arbitrary polarization states from a single unit-cell design. By engineering a completely asymmetric design, we obtained a metasurface that can excite eigenmodes of the nanoresonators, thus displaying a unique diffraction pattern for not only any linear polarization state but all elliptical polarization states (and handedness) as well. The unique diffraction patterns are quantified into Stokes parameters with a resolution of 5$^{\circ}$ and with a polarization state fidelity of up to $99\pm1$%. This holds promise for applications in polarization imaging and quantum state tomography.

Pixel scaling effects have been a major issue for the development of high-resolution color image sensors due to the reduced photoelectric signal and the color crosstalk. Various structural color techniques have been proposed and demonstrated the large freedom in color manipulation by the structure design. However, the optical efficiency and the color distortion limit the practical applications due to its intrinsic filtering mechanism. Instead, on-chip full-color routing is quite charming for improving the signal-to-noise ratio. In this paper, a single-layer quick response code like nanorouter is proposed for the full-color light routing in a pixel level of image sensors. It shows much higher routing efficiency than various planar lens schemes for signal wavelength focusing. Moreover, over 60% signal enhancement with robust polarization insensitivity is obtained in all three primary color bands with a same nanorouter by a multi-objective optimization method. Negligible color distortion is observed from the reconstructed color image. Such a simple nanorouter structure is promising for the development of image sensor, photovoltaics and display.

The state of polarization (SoP) is a fundamental property of electromagnetic radiation that can carry a rich set of important information in light transmitted through a test sample. Despite a wide range of applications in material identification, (thin-film) characterization, and defect analysis, the SoP remains difficult to exploit—especially at terahertz frequencies since its measurement requires complex apparatuses with multiple moving parts. We have addressed these challenges by designing a metasurface polarimeter (MSP) that incorporates the entire functionality of a division of aperture polarimeter (DoAP) with high efficiency into a single silicon layer without the need for moving parts. Collective simulations are in perfect agreement with experimental data, both confirming the intended operation. Furthermore, we present an automated analysis algorithm that allows for the complete determination of the SoP from a single image with an experimental accuracy of 92.1% ± 4.2%, following an initial calibration. We anticipate that the presented MSP will find applications in polarimetric sensing and imaging for non-destructive evaluation at terahertz frequencies.

The transformation of nanophotonic sensors from laboratory-based demonstrations to a portable system to ensure widespread applicability in everyday life requires their integration with detectors for direct electrical read out. As complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology has revolutionized the electronics industry, the integration of nanophotonic structures with CMOS technology will also transform the sensing market. However, nanophotonic sensors have to fulfill certain requirements for their integration with CMOS detectors, such as operation in the visible wavelength range, operation in normal incidence configuration, use of CMOS compatible materials, and capability to give large optical intensity change due to resonance wavelength shift. In this paper, we have designed and developed one-dimensional silicon nitride grating structures that satisfy all these conditions simultaneously. The gratings can achieve 1 and 6 nm linewidths for the transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) polarizations, respectively, with 90% resonance depth. The experimental linewidth is 8 nm with 55% resonance depth, which is limited by the detector resolution. The experimental sensitivity of the device is 160 nm/refractive index unit (RIU), which translates to a very high intensity sensitivity of 1700%/RIU, which would enable sensing of very small changes in refractive index when integrated with a detector.

We present the design and application of a 64x64 pixel SPAD array to portable colorimetric sensing, and fluorescence and x-ray imaging. The device was fabricated on an unmodified 180 nm CMOS process and is based on a square p+/n active junction SPAD geometry suitable for detecting green fluorescence emission. The stand-alone SPAD shows a photodetection probability greater than 60% at 5 V excess bias, with a dark count rate of less than 4 cps/µm2 and sub-ns timing jitter performance. It has a global shutter with an in-pixel 8-bit counter; four 5-bit decoders and two 64-to-1 multiplexer blocks allow the data to be read-out. The array of sensors was able to detect fluorescence from a fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) solution down to a concentration of 900 pM with a SNR of 9.8 dB. A colorimetric assay was performed on top of the sensor array with a limit of quantification of 3.1 µM. X-rays images, using energies ranging from 10 kVp to 100 kVp, of a lead grating mask were acquired without using a scintillation crystal.

Metasurfaces have revolutionized the definition of compact optics. Using subwavelength periodic structures of nanostructured dielectrics, the refractive index and absorption properties of metasurfaces – which are 2D metamaterials – can manipulate light to a degree not possible with conventional bulk glasses and crystals. The phase, polarization, spin (for circularly polarized light), amplitude and wavelength of light can all be manipulated and crafted to user-specified values to mimic the action of a lens, which we refer to as a metalens (ML). MLs have four major advantages over traditional refractive lenses – superior resolution, lighter weight, miniaturization and cost. Many metasurfaces with useful functionalities have been proposed in recent years, yet although novel in their approach have few real-world applications. One such market is the use within infrared laser systems, such as laser designators. In this work, we demonstrate metasurface lenses working at a wavelength of λ = 1064 nm, with aperture d = 1 mm and four different Fnumbers (focal length f = 0.5, 1, 2 and 5 mm). The lenses are composed of 700nm high a-Si pillars – ranging from 70- 360 nm diameter – which are fabricated using electron beam lithography (EBL) and reactive ion etching processes, on top of a fused silica substrate. Such lenses are shown to have diffraction-limited performance, with focal spot-size agreeing with theoretical values of λ‧f/d. Furthermore, we have designed large area lenses with aperture d = 10 mm, where the number of pillars per lens exceeds 550 million. By using an efficient Python script, we are able to produce these 100 mm2 samples with just 14 hours of EBL writing time.

A range of nanophotonic sensors composed of different materials and device configurations have been developed over the past two decades. These sensors have achieved high performance in terms of sensitivity and detection limit. The size of onchip nanophotonic sensors is also small and they are regarded as a strong candidate to provide the next generation sensors for a range of applications including chemical and biosensing for point-of-care diagnostics. However, the apparatus used to perform measurements of nanophotonic sensor chips is bulky, expensive and requires experts to operate them. Thus, although integrated nanophotonic sensors have shown high performance and are compact themselves their practical applications are limited by the lack of a compact readout system required for their measurements. To achieve the aim of using nanophotonic sensors in daily life it is important to develop nanophotonic sensors which are not only themselves small, but their readout system is also portable, compact and easy to operate. Recognizing the need to develop compact readout systems for onchip nanophotonic sensors, different groups around the globe have started to put efforts in this direction. This review article discusses different works carried out to develop integrated nanophotonic sensors with compact readout systems, which are divided into two categories; onchip nanophotonic sensors with monolithically integrated readout and onchip nanophotonic sensors with separate but compact readout systems.

Refractive index sensing is attracting extensive interest. Limited by the weak light–matter interaction and the broad bandwidth of resonance, the figure of merit (FoM) of terahertz (THz) sensors is much lower than their counterparts in visible and infrared regions. Here, these two issues are addressed by incorporating a microfluidic channel as a slot layer into a grating slot waveguide (GSW), where guided‐mode resonance results in a narrowband resonant peak and the sensitivity increases remarkably due to the greatly concentrated electromagnetic fields in the slot layer. Both reflective and transmissive sensors are developed with the calculated quality (Q) factors two orders of magnitude larger than metamaterial and plasmonic sensors, and the sensitivities one order of magnitude larger than grating waveguide sensors, contributing to a record high FoM of 692. The measured results match well with the simulations considering the fabrication errors, where the degeneration of narrowband transmission peaks in experiments is attributed to the error of the microfluidic channel height and the divergence of the incident beam. The proposed unity‐integrating configuration with simultaneous optimizations of the resonance mechanism, and the spatial overlap between the sensing field and the analytes shows the potential for high sensitivity bio and chemo sensing.

A square shaped, low noise and high photo-response single photon avalanche diode suitable for circuit integration, implemented in a standard CMOS 180 nm high voltage technology, is presented. In this work, a p+ to shallow n-well junction was engineered with a very smooth electric field profile guard ring to attain a photo detection probability peak higher than 50% with a median dark count rate lower than 2 Hz/μm2 when operated at an excess bias of 4 V. The reported timing jitter full width at half maximum is below 300 ps for 640 nm laser pulses.

We experimentally demonstrate a CMOS compatible medium wave infrared metal-insulator-metal (MIM) metamaterial absorber structure where for a single dielectric spacer thickness at least 93% absorption is attained for 10 separate bands centred at 3.08, 3.30, 3.53, 3.78, 4.14, 4.40, 4.72, 4.94, 5.33, 5.60 μm. Previous hyperspectral MIM metamaterial absorber designs required that the thickness of the dielectric spacer layer be adjusted in order to attain selective unity absorption across the band of interest thereby increasing complexity and cost. We show that the absorption characteristics of the hyperspectral metamaterial structures are polarization insensitive and invariant for oblique incident angles up to 25° making them suitable for practical implementation in an imaging system. Finally, we also reveal that under TM illumination and at certain oblique incident angles there is an extremely narrowband Fano resonance (Q < 50) between the MIM absorber mode and the surface plasmon polariton mode that could have applications in hazardous/toxic gas identification and biosensing.

We report on the design and fabrication of a hybrid sensor that integrates transmission-mode localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) into a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) for studying biochemical surface reactions. The coupling of LSPR nanostructures and a QCM allows optical spectra and QCM resonant frequency shifts to be recorded simultaneously and analyzed in real time for a given surface adsorption process. This integration simplifies the conventional combination of SPR and QCM and has the potential to be miniaturized for application in point-of-care (POC) diagnostics. The influence of antibody-antigen recognition effect on both the QCM and LSPR has been analyzed and discussed.``

The need for energy efficiency and lower emissions from industrial plants and infrastructures is driving research into novel sensor technologies, especially those that allow observing and measuring greenhouse gases, such as CO2CO2. CO2CO2 emissions can be captured using mid-infrared imagers, but at present, these are based on hybrid technologies that need expensive manufacturing and require cooling. The high price tag prevents a wider diffusion of mid-infrared imagers and hence their use for many low-cost and large-volume applications. Here we report a monolithic III-V technology that integrates GaAs transistors with an InSb photodiode array. The monolithic material system reduces costs and provides an excellent platform for the sensor system-on-chip. OBJECTIVE: To characterise incidence and healthcare costs associated with persistent postoperative pain (PPP) following lumbar surgery. DESIGN: Retrospective, population-based cohort study. SETTING: Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) and Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) databases. PARTICIPANTS: Population-based cohort of 10 216 adults who underwent lumbar surgery in England from 1997/1998 through 2011/2012 and had at least 1 year of presurgery data and 2 years of postoperative follow-up data in the linked CPRD-HES. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOMES MEASURES: Incidence and total healthcare costs over 2, 5 and 10 years attributable to persistent PPP following initial lumbar surgery. RESULTS: The rate of individuals undergoing lumbar surgery in the CPRD-HES linked data doubled over the 15-year study period, fiscal years 1997/1998 to 2011/2012, from 2.5 to 4.9 per 10 000 adults. Over the most recent 5-year period (2007/2008 to 2011/2012), on average 20.8% (95% CI 19.7% to 21.9%) of lumbar surgery patients met criteria for PPP. Rates of healthcare usage were significantly higher for patients with PPP across all types of care. Over 2 years following initial spine surgery, the mean cost difference between patients with and without PPP was £5383 (95% CI £4872 to £5916). Over 5 and 10 years following initial spine surgery, the mean cost difference between patients with and without PPP increased to £10 195 (95% CI £8726 to £11 669) and £14 318 (95% CI £8386 to £19 771), respectively. Extrapolated to the UK population, we estimate that nearly 5000 adults experience PPP after spine surgery annually, with each new cohort costing the UK National Health Service in excess of £70 million over the first 10 years alone. CONCLUSIONS: Persistent pain affects more than one-in-five lumbar surgery patients and accounts for substantial long-term healthcare costs. There is a need for formal, evidence-based guidelines for a coherent, coordinated management strategy for patients with continuing pain after lumbar surgery.

We have designed, simulated, and experimentally demonstrated four-colour mid-infrared (mid-IR) Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) integrated monolithically into a vertical structure on a semi-insulating GaAs substrate. In order to finely control the peak wavelength of the emitted mid-IR light, quantum well (QW) structures based on AlInSb/InSb/AlInSb are employed. The completed device structure consists of three p-QW-n diodes with different well widths stacked on top of one bulk AlInSb p-i-n diode. The epitaxial layers comprising the device are designed in such a way that one contact layer is shared between two LEDs. The design of the heterostructure realising the multispectral LEDs was aided by numerical modelling, and good agreement is observed between the simulated and experimental results. Electro-Luminescence measurements, carried out at room temperature, confirm that the emission of each LED peaks at a different wavelength. Peak wavelengths of 3.40 μm, 3.50 μm, 3.95 μm, and 4.18 μm are observed in the bulk, 2 nm, 4 nm, and 6 nm quantum well LEDs, respectively. Under zero bias, Fourier Transform Infrared photo-response measurements indicate that these fabricated diodes can also be operated as mid-IR photodetectors with an extended cut-off wavelength up to 4.6 μm.

The paper describes the use of a novel microparticle sensor (~3 μm diameter) and infra-red (IR) microscopy to measure the temperature profile within the active channel (typically 3 μm length and 120 μm width) of planar Gunn diodes. The method has enabled detailed temperature measurements showing an asymmetrical temperature profile along the active width of these devices. The asymmetrical temperature profile suggests a similar behaviour in the channel current density, which may contribute to the lower than expected RF output power.

We present the design and fabrication of terahertz (THz) metamaterial (MM) absorbers and their monolithic integration into a commercial CMOS technology along with its respective readout electronics to produce a low-cost, uncooled and high resolution THz camera. We first describe the work done on single band and broadband MM absorbers on custom substrates then progress with a description of the integration of such resonators into a six metal layer 180 nm CMOS process and its coupling with two types of microbolometer sensors: vanadium oxide (VOx) and silicon (Si) pn diode. Additionally, we demonstrate the integration of the THz sensors with readout electronics to form a monolithic THz focal plane array (FPA). Reflection images of a metallic object hidden in a manila envelope are recorded using both the VOx and Si pn diode detectors, demonstrating the suitability of the technology for stand-off detection of concealed objects. Lastly, we present the current work towards scaling this technology into a 64 x 64 FPA.

Resonant tunneling diode (RTD) is the fastest solid-state electronic device with the highest reported frequency at 1.92 THz [1]. RTD-based THz sources have many promising applications such as ultrafast wireless communications, THz imaging, etc. To date, the main limitation of RTD technology is the low output power. Many efforts had been made to increase the power level by such as optimizing the layer structure [2], employing more devices in an array [3], matching impedance by displacing the device in circuit [3], etc. Here we report the loading effect by using E/H impedance tuner. We found that the maximum power is over 20dB higher than the worst impedance matching and the frequency shift is within 14% range of the central frequency. The load-pull measurement provides a convenient way to investigate the power/frequency variation versus the impedance change. Further work will benefit from the measurement results to design corresponding impedance matching network. The power level of RTD oscillator will be increased.

Potentiometry and amperometry are some of the most important techniques for electroanalytical applications. Integrating these two techniques on a single chip using CMOS technology paves the way for more analysis and measurement of chemical solutions. In this paper, we describe the integration of electrode transducers (amperometry) on an ion imager based on an ISFET array (potentiometry). In particular, this integration enables the spatial representation of the potential distribution of active electrodes in a chemical solution under investigation.

Spatial overlap between the electromagnetic fields and the analytes is a key factor for strong light-matter interaction leading to high sensitivity for label-free refractive index sensing. Usually, the overlap and therefore the sensitivity are limited by either the localized near field of plasmonic antennas or the decayed resonant mode outside the cavity applied to monitor the refractive index variation. In this paper, by constructing a metal microstructure array-dielectric-metal (MDM) structure, a novel metamaterial absorber integrated microfluidic (MAIM) sensor is proposed and demonstrated in terahertz (THz) range, where the dielectric layer of the MDM structure is hollow and acts as the microfluidic channel. Tuning the electromagnetic parameters of metamaterial absorber, greatly confined electromagnetic fields can be obtained in the channel resulting in significantly enhanced interaction between the analytes and the THz wave. A high sensitivity of 3.5 THz/RIU is predicted. The experimental results of devices working around 1 THz agree with the simulation ones well. The proposed idea to integrate metamaterial and microfluid with a large light-matter interaction can be extended to other frequency regions and has promising applications in matter detection and biosensing.

Complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology has made personal mobile computing and communications an everyday part of life. In this paper we present a nanophotonic integrated CMOS-based biosensor that will pave the way for future personalized medical diagnostics. To achieve our aim, we have monolithically integrated plasmonic nanostructures with a CMOS photodiode. Following this approach of monolithic nanophotonics–microelectronics integration, we have successfully developed a miniaturized nanophotonic sensor system with direct electrical readout, which eliminates the need of bulky and costly equipment that is presently used for interrogation of nanophotonic sensors. The optical sensitivity of the plasmonic nanostructures is measured to be 275 nm/refractive index unit (RIU), which translates to an electrical sensitivity of 5.8 V/RIU in our integrated sensor system. This advance is the first demonstration of monolithic integration of nanophotonic structures with CMOS detectors and is a crucial step toward translating laboratory based nanophotonic sensing systems to portable, low-cost, and digital formats.

We present a new chlorine-free dry etching process which was used to successfully etch indium antimonide grown on gallium arsenide substrates while keeping the substrate temperature below 150 °C. By use of a reflowed photoresist mask a sidewall with 60 degree positive slope was achieved, whereas a nearly vertical one was obtained when hard masks were used. Long etch tests demonstrated the non-selectivity of the process by etching through the entire multi-layer epitaxial structure. Electrical and optical measurements on devices fabricated both by wet and dry etch techniques provided similar results, proving that the dry etch process does not cause damage to the material. This technique has a great potential to replace the standard wet etching techniques used for fabrication of indium antimonide devices with a non-damaging low temperature plasma process.

Medium wavelength infrared detectors are of increasing importance in defense, security, commercial and environmental applications. Enhanced integration will lead to greater resolution and lower cost focal plane arrays. We present the monolithic fabrication of an active photo-pixel made in InSb on a GaAs substrate that is suitable for large-scale integration into a focal plane array. Pixel addressing is provided by the co-integration of a GaAs MESFET with an InSb photodiode. Pixel fabrication was achieved by developing novel materials and process steps including isolation etches, a gate recess etch and low temperature processes to make Ohmic contacts to both the GaAs and InSb devices. Detailed electrical and optical measurements in an FTIR demonstrated that the photodiode was sensitive to radiation in the 3 to 5 μm range at room temperature, and that the device could be isolated from its contacts using the integrated MESFET. This heterogeneous technology creates great potential to realize a new type of monolithic focal plane array of addressable pixels for imaging in the medium wavelength infrared range.

Fluorescence Imaging (FI) is a powerful technique in biological science and clinical medicine. Current FI devices that are used either for in-vivo or in-vitro studies are expensive, bulky and consume substantial power, confining the technique to laboratories and hospital examination rooms. Here we present a miniaturised wireless fluorescence endoscope capsule with low power consumption that will pave the way for future FI systems and applications. With enhanced sensitivity compared to existing technology we have demonstrated that the capsule can be successfully used to image tissue autofluorescence and targeted fluorescence via fluorophore labelling of tissues. The capsule incorporates a state-of-the-art complementary metal oxide semiconductor single photon avalanche detector imaging array, miniaturised optical isolation, wireless technology and low power design. When in use the capsule consumes only 30.9 mW, and deploys very low-level 468 nm illumination. The device has the potential to replace highly power-hungry intrusive optical fibre based endoscopes and to extend the range of clinical examination below the duodenum. To demonstrate the performance of our capsule, we imaged fluorescence phantoms incorporating principal tissue fluorophores (flavins) and absorbers (haemoglobin). We also demonstrated the utility of marker identification by imaging a 20 μM fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) labelling solution on mammalian tissue.

This article presents the design of an innovative, low-cost, uncooled, metamaterial based terahertz (THz) focal plane array (FPA). A single pixel is composed of a resonant metamaterial absorber and micro-bolometer sensor integrated in a standard 180 nm CMOS process. The metamaterial is made directly in the metallic and insulating layers available in the six metal layer CMOS foundry process. THz absorption is determined by the geometry of the metamaterial absorber which can be customized for different frequencies. The initial prototype consists of a 5 x 5 pixel array with a pixel size of 30 µm x 30 µm and is readily scalable to more commercially viable array sizes. The FPA imaging capability is demonstrated in a transmission and reflection mode experiment by scanning a metallic object hidden in a manila envelope.

We present the co-fabrication of planar Gunn diodes and high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) on an Indium Phosphide (InP) substrate for the first time. Electron beam lithography (EBL) has been used extensively for the complete fabrication procedure and a 70 nm T-gate technology was incorporated for the enhancement of the small-signal characteristics of the HEMT. Diodes with anode-to-cathode separation (Lac) down to 1 μm and 120 μm width where shown to oscillate up to 204 GHz. The transistor presents a cut-off frequency (fT) of 220 GHz, with power gain up to 330 GHz (fmax). The integration of the two devices creates the potential for the realisation of high-power, high-frequency MMIC Gunn oscillators, circuits and systems.

In this article, the resonant frequency and quality factor of a novel coplanar waveguide (cpw) diamond-shaped resonator were analyzed using advanced design system-2009 momentum model software. The diamond resonator was compared with the cpw radial stub resonator on gallium arsenide (GaAs); the work indicated that the diamond resonator had a smaller physical size and higher quality factor (Q) at millimetric wave frequencies. Experimentally measured diamond cpw resonators fabricated on GaAs were in good agreement with the simulated results.

In this paper, a very wide-band Yagi antenna suitable for high-data rate communication in the millimetre-wave frequency range is presented. The coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed antenna is realised on InP substrate using the CPW ground planes as the reflector elements. The measured S11 return loss under -10 dB shows a 100% bandwidth for the 140-220 GHz frequency band antenna and 50% for the 220-325 GHz frequency band antenna. The maximum measured gain of the antenna is 7.35 dB at 202 GHz and 4.75 dB at 260 GHz.

A series of resonant tunneling diode oscillators with frequencies up to W-band and output power around one milliwatt are presented. To our knowledge, the 75.2 GHz RTD oscillator with -0.2 dBm output power is the highest power reported. The demand for higher frequency applications is growing and a solid-state source for THz frequencies is needed. We compare experimentally demonstarted results of resonant tunneling diode and planar Gunn diodes for terahertz technology. The\ud highest power demonstrated for W-band RTD oscillators at 75.2 GHz with -0.2 dBm (0.96 mW) and at 300GHz for submicron planar Gunn with -16dBm (28μW) are compared as the potential solid-state source for Terahertz applications.

A new technique is demonstrated for the realisation of air bridges using one lithographic step. Gray scale lithography is used for the formation of 3D profiles on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) where a variable dose exposure is applied to create a trapezoid profile for the air bridge. In previous 3D electron beam lithography (EBL) methods the span area was exposed to a low dose or a low acceleration voltage [1,2,3]. Thus, the required discontinuity with the surrounding area for the lift-off process was created. In this technique, no exposure of the span area is needed. Another exposure of a gradient dose is applied to the sides of the highest part of the air bridge. The created profile, after developing the resist, is depicted in Figure 1. The surfaces with red and blue colour represent the metal to form the air bridge and the metal to lift-off, respectively. Using this configuration, the deposited metal at the sides of the top part of the air bridge is connected to the surrounding metal to lift-off and disconnect from the air bridge. The electron dose used in this area has to be smaller than the minimum dose that penetrates the total resist layer, so that the deposited metal does not reach the substrate. This method takes maximum advantage of the resist thickness for the fabrication of high structures, as no part of the resist is sacrificed

Stern flaps are appendages attached to the transom of a vessel which can decrease resistance at some speeds. This can translate to significant fuel savings when applied to a fleet of similar ships. A recent study investigating a stern flap design for the Canadian Navy's HALIFAX Class frigates showed a significant sensitivity to trim angle at high speeds. Further exploration on the role of trim angle was conducted using CFD simulations for three naval combatants: the Canadian HALIFAX Class, the U.S. CG-47/DD-963, and the U.S. DDG-51. This paper describes the results of a series of experiments on a simplified model of a 160m RO-RO ferry, after SOLAS damage. The model was a prismatic shape, primarily to allow for a direct comparison with numerical simulations. The model was tested for a range of residual freeboards from 0.5 to 1.5 metres, and a vertical centre of gravity range to cover values expected from typical existing ships and ships designed to meet SOLAS 90 regulations. The model was tested with and without a centreline casing and for a wide range of freeing port areas. Some tests were carried out with flapped covers on the freeing ports, to prevent water flowing onto the deck through the freeing ports, and some tests were carried out with permanently open freeing ports.
