© 2019 The potential impacts of mining activities on tropical coastal ecosystems are poorly understood. In particular, limited information is available on the effects of metals on scleractinian corals which are foundation species that form vital structural habitats supporting other biota. This study investigated the effects of dissolved nickel and copper on the coral Acropora muricata and its associated microbiota. Corals collected from the Great Barrier Reef were exposed to dissolved nickel (45, 90, 470, 900 and 9050 μg Ni/L)or copper (4, 11, 32 and 65 μg Cu/L)in flow through chambers at the National Sea Simulator, Townsville, Qld, Australia. After a 96-h exposure DNA metabarcoding (16S rDNA and 18S rDNA)was undertaken on all samples to detect changes in the structure of the coral microbiome. The controls remained healthy throughout the study period. After 36 h, bleaching was only observed in corals exposed to 32 and 65 μg Cu/L and very high nickel concentrations (9050 μg Ni/L). At 96 h, significant discolouration of corals was only observed in 470 and 900 μg Ni/L treatments, the highest concentrations tested. While high concentrations of nickel caused bleaching, no changes in the composition of their microbiome communities were observed. In contrast, exposure to copper not only resulted in bleaching, but altered the composition of both the eukaryote and bacterial communities of the coral's microbiomes. Our findings showed that these effects were only evident at relatively high concentrations of nickel and copper, reflecting concentrations observed only in extremely polluted environments. Elevated metal concentrations have the capacity to alter the microbiomes which are inherently linked to coral health.

Despite a surge of multidisciplinary interest in transition studies on low-carbon mobilities, there has been little evaluation of the current state of the field, and the contributions of different approaches such as the multi-level perspective (MLP), theories of practice, or the new mobilities paradigm. As a step in this direction, this contribution brings together scholars representing different theoretical perspectives and disciplinary fields in order to discuss processes and uneven geographies of mobility transitions as they are currently theorized. First, we reflect upon the role of geographers and other social scientists in envisioning, enabling, and criticizing mobility transitions. Second, we discuss how different theoretical approaches can develop mobility transitions scholarship. Finally, we highlight emerging issues in mobility transitions research.

We began this special issue (SI) with the provocative aim ‘to put partnerships in their place’. Our intention was to create a forum where scholars from the domains of cross-sector partnerships (CSPs), place, and business ethics could combine their interests, advance novel theoretical and empirical insights, and reimagine a research agenda that explores CSPs from a place-based perspective. The aim of the SI is to bring to the fore the places in which CSPs are formed; how place shapes the dynamics of CSPs, and how CSPs shape the specific settings in which they develop. The papers of this issue collectively succeed in putting partnerships in their place by revealing the work involved in achieving this emplacement, each presenting a vivid illustration of how CSPs engage morally and materially with place, ranging from land to water, organized to wild spaces, and villages to transnational communities. The special issue offers new contributions to explaining how place enables and constrains organizing (Cartel et al., 2022; Lawrence, 2017), and it demonstrates that engaging with grand challenges such as climate change (Bowen et al., 2018) can enrich CSP theory in settings with entrenched inequality (Powell et al., 2018) and fragility (Welter et al., 2018). At a societal level, our SI connects critical sustainable development goals (SDGs), especially SDGs 3 (Good Health and Well-being), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 14 (Life below Water), 15 (Life on Land), and 17 (Partnerships). It also provides actionable insights into how firms address grand challenges in different contexts and at different scales (Chatterjee et al., 2022).

Foliar zinc (Zn) fertilisers can be used to supplement or replace soil applications of Zn in situations where soil properties may decrease the plant bioavailability of Zn. However, conventional foliar Zn formulations such as zinc sulfate can cause leaf damage due to the rapid release of high amounts of Zn2+ into leaf tissue which can be locally phytotoxic. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) offer an alternative approach by providing a more sustained release of Zn into leaf tissue, and potentially avoiding the need for multiple applications. We compared the efficacy of ZnO-NPs and microparticles (ZnO-MPs) to that of conventional formulations (ZnCl2 and ZnEDTA) in wheat. This is the first study to use 65Zn radiolabelled formulations and gamma spectrometry to determine the translocation of Zn to the grains and subsequent efficiency of foliar-applied ZnO-NP fertilisers. We found that ZnEDTA was the most efficient fertiliser in terms of the proportion of applied Zn translocated to wheat grain. We also investigated the effect of Zn application rate on fertiliser efficiency. For all forms of Zn, when plants were treated with Zn at 750 mg/L or 75 mg/L, there were no significant differences in the concentration of applied Zn translocated to the grain. This suggests that current Zn application rates could be decreased while still maintaining the nutritional quality of grain. Finally, using photo-stimulated luminescence (PSL) autoradiography and synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence microscopy (XFM) we showed that the grain distribution of foliar-applied Zn mirrors that of Zn derived from root uptake. This essay looks at three interwoven mobilisations around travel and tourism. Perhaps the most obvious is the mobilisation of the destination, where it suggests that while tourism is often defined as travelling to somewhere – that sense of "where" is visited is actually rather less firmly placed on the earth’s surface than is often assumed. Second, it tracks the mobilisation entailed in becoming a tourist, looking at the construction of tourism as a specific practice of mobility. And to tell those stories it uses the third register of academic mobility – to speak of being a researcher chasing the two previous mobilised topics. The story is told in the context of the Greek Ionian Island of Kefalonia, or to locate the destination in not entirely the same space, Captain Corelli’s Island. The use of the ethnographic confessional is used to avoid treating tourists as dupes, through the scandalous suggestion that ethnographer and tourist are, if not the same creature then the same species – that homo academicus might be uncomfortably closely related to that embarrassing relative turistas vulgaris.
