Previous studies indicate that occupation might affect cognitive functioning in late life. As people in low- and middle-income countries often have to work until late life, we sought to investigate if there are cognitive benefits to working later into life and whether cognitive function deteriorates after exiting the labour force. We analysed longitudinal data from the Mexican Health and Aging Study (MHAS), a nationally representative sample of Mexican adults age 50+ (N = 7,375), that assessed cognitive functioning by verbal learning, delayed recall and visual scanning. Analyses were carried out using mixed-effects modelling corrected for the influence of gender, instrumental activities of daily living, diabetes, stroke, hypertension, depression, income and marital status. Results suggest that working actively, compared to exiting the workforce, was associated with cognitive performance only in context with occupation. Domestic workers had a faster decline in verbal learning (b = −0.02, p = 0.020) and delayed recall (b = −0.02, p = 0.036) if they continued working actively and people working in administration (b = 0.03, p = 0.007), sales (b = 0.02, p = 0.044) and educators (b = 0.03, p = 0.049) had a slower decline in visual scanning if they continued working in old age. Our findings indicate that continued participation in the labour force in old age does not necessarily come with cognitive benefits. Whether or not working actively in later life protects or even harms cognitive functioning is likely to depend on the type of job.

Secondary school students often learn new cognitive skills by practicing with tasks that vary in difficulty, amount of support and/or content. Occasionally, they have to select these tasks themselves. Studies on task-selection guidance investigated either procedural guidance (specific rules for selecting tasks) or strategic guidance (general rules and explanations for task selection), but never directly compared them. Experiment 1 aimed to replicate these studies by comparing procedural guidance and strategic guidance to a no-guidance condition, in an electronic learning environment in which participants practiced eight self-selected tasks. Results showed no differences in selected tasks during practice and domain-specific skill acquisition between the experimental groups. A possible explanation for this is an ineffective combination of feedback and feed forward (i.e. the task-selection advice). The second experiment compared inferential guidance (which combines procedural feedback with strategic feed forward), to a no-guidance condition. Results showed that participants selected more difficult, less-supported tasks after receiving inferential guidance than after no guidance. Differences in domain-specific skill acquisition were not significant, but higher conformity to inferential guidance did significantly predict higher domain-specific skill acquisition. Hence, we conclude that inferential guidance can positively affect task selections and domain-specific skill acquisition, but only when conformity is high.

Adverse childhood experiences, which include child maltreatment, are a major public health issue nationally. Child maltreatment has been linked to poorer cognitive functioning, which can start in childhood and persist into adulthood. However, studies examining the potential disparities by gender and race/ethnicity are lacking. The aim of this study was to assess the gender and racial/ethnic disparities in the association between child maltreatment and memory performance. Data were obtained from Waves III and IV of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health ( N = 11,624). Weighted multiple linear regression models were used to assess the associations between sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect, and child maltreatment score and memory. Models were stratified by gender, race, and ethnicity. Men who were exposed to sexual abuse, neglect and two or three child maltreatment types scored one to three points lower (β = –1.44; 95% CI: –2.83, –0.06; β = –2.41; 95% CI: –3.75, –1.08; β = –3.35; 95% CI: –5.33, –1.37; β = –2.31; 95% CI: –3.75, –0.86) in memory performance compared to men who did not report sexual abuse, neglect, or child maltreatment, respectively. Black respondents who were exposed to sexual abuse scored two points lower (β = –1.62; 95% CI: –2.80, –0.44) in memory performance compared to Black respondents who did not report sexual abuse. Among Other race and Hispanic respondents, those who reported neglect scored four points lower (β = –4.06; 95% CI: –6.47, –1.66; β = –4.15; 95% CI: –5.99, –2.30) in memory performance, respectively, compared to their counterparts who did not report neglect. Gender- and racial/ethnic-responsive memory performance interventions addressing child maltreatment may be beneficial for affected populations.

Humans and chimpanzees differ in their cognitive abilities, in particular, in social-cognitive processing; however, the underlying neural mechanisms are still unknown. Based on the theory of predictive coding, we hypothesize that crucial differences in cognitive processing might arise from aberrant reliance on predictions. We test this hypothesis using a recurrent neural network that integrates sensory information with predictions based on the rules of Bayesian inference. Altering a network parameter, we vary how strongly the network relies on its predictions during development. Our model qualitatively replicates findings from a behavioral study on the drawing ability of human children and chimpanzees. Moderate parameter values replicate the ability of human children to complete drawings by adding missing elements. With weak reliance on predictions, the model’s behavior is similar to chimpanzees’ behaviors: trained networks can follow existing lines but fail to complete drawings. Furthermore, with a strong reliance on predictions, networks learn more abstract representations of drawings and confuse different trained patterns. An analysis of the internal network representations reveals that an aberrant reliance on predictions affects the formation of attractors in the network. Thus, appropriate reliance on their own predictions in humans may be crucial for developing abstract representations and acquiring cognitive skills.

We estimate impacts of exposure to an infant health intervention trialled in Sweden in the early 1930s using purposively digitised birth registers linked to school catalogues, census files and tax records to generate longitudinal data that track individuals through four stages of the life-course, from birth to age 71. This allows us to measure impacts on childhood health and cognitive skills at ages 7 and 10, educational choice during young adulthood, employment, earnings and occupation at age 36{40, and pension income at age 71. Leveraging quasi-random variation in eligibility by birth date and birth parish, we estimate that an additional year of exposure was associated with substantial increases in earnings and (public sector) employment among women, alongside no improvements for men. Earnings gains for women were concentrated in the top quintile of the distribution. The earnings results appear to be related to the intervention having made it more likely that primary school test scores for girls were in the top quintile of the distribution and, related, that they attended secondary school. The greater investments of women in education are consistent with their comparative advantage in cognitive tasks, but opportunities are also likely to have played a role. Our sample cohorts were exposed to a massive expansion of the Swedish welfare state, which created unprecedented employment opportunities for women.

To improve drinking water accessibility and safety in rural China, the Chinese government launched the rural drinking water program in the 1980s. As part of the program, tap water infrastructure has been constructed in rural areas to supply tap water to rural residents. This policy intervention provides a unique opportunity to examine the impact of early life exposure to tap water on children’s cognitive achievement in later life. Using data extracted from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS), we find that one additional year of exposure to tap water in early life increases average cognitive test score by 0.109 standard deviations for a sample of rural children aged 10-15 in 2010. The effect is larger for children whose fathers are less-educated. Event study estimates confirm that the beneficial impacts are concentrated in early life with limited additional impact after the time window.

This paper studies the impact of labor market conditions during the education-to-work transition on workers' long-term skill development. Using representative survey data on measures of work-relevant cognitive skills for adults from 19 countries, I document four main findings: i) cohorts of workers who faced higher unemployment rates at ages 18–25 have lower skills at ages 36–59; ii) unemployment rates faced at later ages (26–35) do not have such an effect; iii) the former findings hold even though, on average, people get more formal education as a response to higher unemployment in their late teens and early twenties; iv) skill inequality is affected: workers whose parents were less educated bear most of the negative effects. These findings can be rationalized by on-the-job learning during the early twenties being an important factor of skill-development, and such learning being negatively impacted by bad macroeconomic conditions. Using German panel data on skills, I show that young workers at large firms experience higher skill growth than those at small firms. This finding suggests firm heterogeneity in human capital provision to young workers as a potential mechanism since, in bad economic times, young workers disproportionately match with small firms.

Emotions are known to impact cognitive skills, thus influencing job performance. This is also true for software development, which requires creativity and problem-solving abilities. In this paper, we report the results of a field study involving professional developers from five different companies. We provide empirical evidence that a link exists between emotions and perceived productivity at the workplace. Furthermore, we present a taxonomy of triggers for developers' positive and negative emotions, based on the qualitative analysis of participants' self-reported answers collected through daily experience sampling. Finally, we experiment with a minimal set of non-invasive biometric sensors that we use as input for emotion detection. We found that positive emotional valence, neutral arousal, and high dominance are prevalent. We also found a positive correlation between emotional valence and perceived productivity, with a stronger correlation in the afternoon. Both social and individual breaks emerge as useful for restoring a positive mood. Furthermore, we found that a minimum set of non-invasive biometric sensors can be used as a predictor for emotions, provided that training is performed on an individual basis. While promising, our classifier performance is not yet robust enough for practical usage. Further data collection is required to strengthen the classifier, by also implementing individual fine-tuning of emotion models.

OBJECTIVE High numbers of adolescents today are exposed to conflict-related trauma, with trauma-exposure being associated with adverse biopsychosocial outcomes. Here we investigated the influence of trauma-exposure and high levels of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms on cognitive functioning in trauma-related compared to neutral contexts. METHOD Afghan adolescent refugees with high levels of PTSD symptomatology and non-trauma-exposed Afghan adolescent refugee controls (N = 47; 43% female; aged 13-19 years, M = 15.49, SD = 1.40) completed a visual working memory task including affective (trauma-related) and neutral distractors. RESULTS Working memory capacity in the context of trauma-related distractors (and not neutral distractors) was significantly poorer in trauma-exposed refugees with high levels of PTSD when compared to non-trauma-exposed controls. CONCLUSIONS The findings highlight the importance of investigating posttraumatic cognitive functioning within affective contexts and suggest that affective working memory capacity may constitute a promising target for intervention. A large body of empirical evidence has accumulated showing that the experience of old age is "younger," more "agentic," and "happier" than ever before. However, it is not yet known whether historical improvements in well-being, control beliefs, cognitive functioning, and other outcomes generalize to individuals' views on their own aging process. To examine historical changes in such views on aging, we compared matched cohorts of older adults within two independent studies that assessed differences across a two-decade interval, the Berlin Aging Studies (BASE; 1990/1993 vs. 2017/2018, each n = 256, Mage = 77) and the Midlife in the United States Study (MIDUS; 1995/1996 vs. 2013/14, each n = 848, Mage = 67). Consistent across four different dimensions of individuals' subjective views on aging (age felt, age appeared, desired age, and attitudes toward own aging) in the BASE and corroborated with subjective age felt and subjective age desired in the MIDUS, there was no evidence whatsoever that older adults of today have more favorable views on how they age than older adults did two decades ago. Further, heterogeneity in views on aging increased across two decades in the MIDUS but decreased in BASE. Also consistent across studies, associations of views on aging with sociodemographic, health, cognitive, and psychosocial correlates did not change across historical times. We discuss possible reasons for our findings, including the possibility that individual age views may have become increasingly decoupled from societal age views. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether neighborhood and household disorder matter for cognitive functioning among middle-aged and older adults and whether the disorder-cognition link is moderated by social network resources. METHOD: Data are drawn from National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project Wave 2 (N=3,198). Both neighborhood and household were considered as key residential contexts that shape one’s social life and health. Exposure to neighborhood and household disorder was measured using interviewer assessments of signs of disorder and decay, including the presence of disrepair, trash, noise, and unpleasant smells such as air pollution, in the buildings and streets in which the respondent lives. Cognitive function was measured using the survey-adapted Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-SA). Network size, network range, and frequency of interaction among network members were assessed as moderators. RESULTS: Neighborhood and household disorder were independently associated with cognitive function. However, disorder in the household appeared to have more direct associations with cognitive function than did the neighborhood when both were present. The association between household disorder and cognitive function was mitigated by network size, such that poor housing conditions were associated with lower cognitive function only for those with small social networks. CONCLUSION: The current study suggests a larger network may play a role in minimizing the negative influence of household disorder on cognitive function for middle-aged and older adults. Social policy and intervention aimed at promoting network ties may help reduce further disparities in cognitive function, especially for those vulnerable groups living in a poor-quality household.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined how the lower cognitive skills in children who consumed iron-fortified formula in infancy relate to outcomes in young adulthood. METHODS: Participants were 443 Chilean young adults (M age = 21.2y, 55% female) who took part in a randomized controlled iron-deficiency anemia preventive trial during infancy (6-12m). Slightly over half of participants (n = 237) received iron-fortified formula (12.7 mg/L) and 206 received a low-iron formula (2.3 mg/L). Spatial memory, IQ, and visual-motor integration were measured at age 10, and neurocognition, emotion regulation, educational level, and attainment of adult developmental milestones were assessed at age 21. RESULTS: Consumption of iron-fortified formula in infancy was associated with poorer performance on neurocognitive tests in childhood, and these effects related to poorer neurocognitive, emotional, and educational outcomes in young adulthood. Dosage effects associated with consumption of iron-fortified formula were found for lower educational attainment and, marginally, slower mental processing. Those who received iron-fortified formula and had low age 10 cognitive abilities performed most poorly on neurocognitive tests at age 21. CONCLUSION: Findings suggest that the long-term development of infants who consume iron-fortified formula may be adversely affected.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive therapy (CT) skills are an index of treatment progress. They predict changes in patients’ acute depressive symptoms and symptom relapses. However, the psychometric properties of the various measures of CT skills are poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the factor structure of the Competencies of Cognitive Therapy Scale–Self Report (CCTS-SR) and assess its concurrent validity. METHODS: The psychometric properties of the CCTS-SR were explored by using data from a panel of online respondents (N=410). The fit of a one-factor solution was explored by using a confirmatory factor analysis. Exploratory bifactor analyses (EBFA) were then conducted to determine other possible factor structures. RESULTS: The one-factor solution did not fit the data well. Results of the EBFA suggested that the factor structure of the CCTS-SR may be characterized by a single underlying dimension capturing the general use of CT skills as well as by more specific factors the authors labeled “behavioral activation” and “CT comprehension.” The variance captured by the factor initially labeled as CT comprehension was correlated with measures of depression and emotional dysregulation, suggesting that these items do not capture CT comprehension and should be removed from the scale. CONCLUSIONS: The CCTS-SR seems to be characterized by more than a single factor, and items that seemingly compose CT comprehension (i.e., items 13 and 14) may need to be removed. Although the CCTS-SR may be a valid index of therapy progress, more attention needs to be paid to its psychometric properties.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex chronic disease associated with reduced cognitive functioning. Patients with SLE report cognitive symptoms, but cognitive assessment is not routine in SLE and little is known about day-to-day cognitive problems and their effect on disease management. As part of a pilot exploring the use of a cognitive functioning report prototype for shared decision-making in clinical encounters (the Approaches to Positive Patient-Centered Experiences of Aging in Lupus [APPEAL] Study), we investigated the relevance of cognitive assessments performed using the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Toolbox among patients with SLE.We conducted 4 focus groups, 2 with SLE patients (n = 18) and 2 with lupus providers (physicians and nurses; n = 9), addressing cognitive issues and interest in communicating about cognition. We compared how NIH Toolbox cognitive domains (episodic memory, working memory, processing speed, attention and inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility) matched with patient- and provider-identified cognitive problems and needs.Patients identified all NIH domains with rich experiential examples; providers identified fewer domains and offered less detail. An unanticipated additional domain was prospective memory (i.e., problems with remembering future actions). Use of technologic aids (e.g., smart phone alerts) was mentioned by some patients, but not providers, and represent a potential opportunity for medical care. All participants expressed interest in discussing cognition in clinic.Cognitive assessment using the NIH Cognitive Toolbox is relevant to this population, with the possible addition of a prospective memory assessment. Cognitive problems and indications of communication gaps suggest the appropriateness of more clinical communication about cognition in the SLE population.

Despite an abundance of evidence that exercise benefits cognition and mood, physical activity levels among older adults remain low, with time and inaccessibility posing major barriers. Interval stair climbing is an accessible time-efficient form of physical activity demonstrated to benefit cognition and mood in young adults, but effectiveness in older adults remains unknown. To address this, 28 older adults (Mage = 69.78 years, 16 females) undertook cognitive and mood assessments twice, 1 week apart, once preceded by interval stair climbing. A fairly large, albeit only marginally significant, effect size () indicated improved cognition following the moderate- to high-intensity intervention; however, rather than improving mood, older adults reported feeling more tired (g = 0.51). These outcomes provide initial indications that this mode of exercise that can easily translate to naturalistic settings offers promise as an intervention strategy, but more research is needed to optimize the protocol to suit aged populations (ACTRN1261900169014).

Objectives : Both cognitively impaired (CI) and non-impaired (NC) older people have challenges in performing everyday tasks. Previous skills training efforts in NC individuals have led to improvements in both functional skills and cognitive functioning. We evaluated the cognitive benefits of combining computerized cognitive training (CCT) with a computer-based functional skills assessment and training (CFSAT) program in a sample of CI and NC older adults. Design : Randomized parallel clinical trial with two treatment conditions: up to 24 sessions of CFSAT training alone or CFSAT plus speed focused CCT. Participants : NC (n=62) and CI (n = 55) older adults, ranging in age from 60 -86 years (M= 73.12), primarily female (90%), and ethnically diverse (21% Hispanic, 52% African American). Participants were divided based on MOCA scores and cognitive complaints. Setting : Three different community centers in Miami, FL. Measurements : The Brief Assessment of Cognition (BAC), app version, was used to measure cognitive performance across 6 different cognitive domains before and after training. Results : All 6 cognitive domains improved from baseline. Multivariate analyses found the effects of the combined CFSAT and CCT to be superior. The interaction of training condition and cognitive status was not statistically significant, indicating no global impact of cognitive status on improvements in cognition across training conditions. Conclusions : CFSAT training was associated with cognitive benefits, particularly in CI participants. The combined intervention led to greater improvements. Consistent with results of previous studies, there is considerable evidence of cognitive plasticity in older adults, including those with CI.

Numeracy, the ability to understand and use basic probability and numerical concepts, is associated with diverse positive outcomes across the lifespan. Prior cross-sectional research on numeracy has generally found a negative association with age, but positive correlations with male gender, education attainment, and measures of fluid and crystallized intelligence have been more robust. Age effects on cognitive functioning are well established, but little is known about longitudinal trends of numeracy into older age. The present study investigates longitudinal age effects on numeracy using a sample of 524 adults (2008 Agerange = 20-78) from the RAND American Life Panel. Participants completed a numeracy measure in both 2008 and 2019, a span of 11 years. Using a linear mixed-effect model to predict numeracy scores, a significant interaction between the year of testing and the quadric age term shows a decline in numeracy scores beginning in later middle age, a trend that falls in between those previously found for crystallized and fluid cognitive abilities. Numeracy declines are somewhat mitigated for males and those with higher education, but the interaction of the two variables did not return a clear pattern of results. Prior research has shown that numeracy is positively related to the quality of health and financial decisions and, ultimately, more positive health and economic outcomes. The implications of age declines in numeracy are discussed in relation to health and financial decision-making, tasks that remain relevant into old age. Cel pracyZgodnie z niektórymi interpretacjami teoretycznymi efektów treningu węchowego, trening ten może pośrednio wpływać pozytywnie na funkcjonowanie poznawcze pacjentów z otępieniem typu alzheimerowskiego. Mechanizm działania w tym wypadku stanowi stymulacja krążenia mózgowego w obszarach mózgu, które są współdzielone przez procesy węchowe i pamięciowe. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest weryfikacja hipotezy, że trening węchowy poprawia funkcjonowanie pamięci i uwagi u pacjentów łagodnymi zaburzeniami poznawczymi.MetodaUkład typu „cross-over assignment” został użyty jako metoda interwencji. Uczestnicy z diagnozą łagodnych zaburzeń poznawczych (N=35; 17 mężczyzn i 18 kobiet) stanowili swoją własną grupę kontrolną. Podczas pierwszych 12 tygodni od czasu badania początkowego nie stosowano żadnych oddziaływań terapeutycznych. Pacjenci przeszli kontrolne badania neuropsychologiczne i wkroczyli w drugi etap badania. W tym etapie poddani zostali codziennemu treningowi sprawności węchowej, który obejmował dwie kilkuminutowe sesje dziennie, wykonywane przez następne 3 miesiące. Funkcjonowanie poznawcze pacjentów było mierzone w trzech punktach czasowych: na samym początku, po 3 miesiącach i po 6 miesiącach (od pomiaru początkowego). Użyto następujących skal do pomiaru sprawności pamięci i uwagi: ACE-III, CVLT i MMSE.WynikiUzyskano istotną statystycznie poprawę funkcjonowania pamięciowego, mierzoną za pomocą CVLT, MMSE, ACE-III: skala pamięci oraz ACE-III: wynik całkowity. Uznaje się je za artefakty związane z efektem uczenia się, nie za prawdziwe efekty treningu. Ponadto stwierdzono poprawę, na poziomie trendu, sprawności funkcjonowania uwagi mierzoną ACE-III: skala uwagi.WnioskiAutorzy dyskutują teoretyczne implikacje przeprowadzonego badania. OBJECTIVE: Should we treat older, patients with depression with white matter hyperintensities (WMH) with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)? WMH, inflammation, depression and cognitive functioning are suggested to be intertwined. Hence, this study investigates whether the association between inflammation and cognition is different in patients with depression with or without WMH. METHODS: Cognitive functioning was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination during and after a course of ECT in 77 older patients with depression. Serum samples (C-reactive protein [CRP], interleukin-6 [IL-6], interleukin-10 [IL-10] and tumour necrosis factor-alpha [TNF-α]) and 3T magnetic resonance imaging were obtained prior to ECT. RESULTS: An interaction effect was found for IL-10, but not for CRP, IL-6 or TNF-α. Despite the well-documented negative effects of anxiety on task-switching (switch costs), few studies have directly tested major theoretical assumptions about (a) the specific processing component of task-switching that is impaired by anxiety, (b) anxious individuals' strategies during task-switching, and (c) the mediating role of mind wandering in the relation between anxiety and task-switching. We addressed these issues using a stochastic diffusion model analysis and novel thought-probe technique in the task-switching paradigm. Our results suggest that the locus of impaired switch costs under state anxiety lies in the efficiency of task-set reconfiguration and not in proactive interference processing. Moreover, state anxiety was associated with impaired mixing costs, which are another crucial index of task-switching. We found only partial evidence for anxious individuals' proneness to compensatory strategies during task-switching. However, no evidence was found for a mediating role of task-unrelated thoughts and a moderating role of working memory in the relation between anxiety and task-switching. Physical activity (PA) has been linked to cognitive functioning and mental health in older adulthood. Multiple subjective (i.e., self-report) and objective measures (e.g., pedometer) have been used to assess PA, however their agreement varies across studies. This pilot study examined cognitive predictors of the agreement between subjective and objectively measured PA. A total of 30 community-dwelling older adults completed a neuropsychological battery, as well as a measure of subjective PA and wore a wristwatch-based pedometer for 30 days to assess objective PA. Greater discrepancy between subjective and objective PA was correlated with poorer executive functioning (r = -.44, p = .02), and this remained true in regression models after controlling for age and education (b = .-54, p = .01). Older adults with lower executive functioning may be more likely to inaccurately report time spent engaging in PA. Future studies should explore whether this relationship holds in larger samples.

Background and Purpose: Delirium, an acute reduction in cognitive functioning, hinders stroke recovery and contributes to cognitive decline. Right-hemisphere stroke is linked with higher delirium incidence, likely, due to the prevalence of spatial neglect (SN), a right-brain disorder of spatial processing. This study tested if symptoms of delirium and SN after right-hemisphere stroke are associated with abnormal function of the right-dominant neural networks specialized for maintaining attention, orientation, and arousal. Methods: Twenty-nine participants with right-hemisphere ischemic stroke undergoing acute rehabilitation completed delirium and SN assessments and functional neuroimaging scans. Whole-brain functional connectivity of 4 right-hemisphere seed regions in the cortical-subcortical arousal and attention networks was assessed for its relationship to validated SN and delirium severity measures. Results: Of 29 patients, 6 (21%) met the diagnostic criteria for delirium and 16 (55%) for SN. Decreased connectivity of the right basal forebrain to brain stem and basal ganglia predicted more severe SN. Increased connectivity of the arousal and attention network regions with the parietal, frontal, and temporal structures in the unaffected hemisphere was also found in more severe delirium and SN. Conclusions: Delirium and SN are associated with decreased arousal network activity and an imbalance of cortico-subcortical hemispheric connectivity. Better understanding of neural correlates of poststroke delirium and SN will lead to improved neuroscience-based treatment development for these disorders. The purpose of this thesis is to compare the cognitive functioning in young adults with OCD against same-aged healthy controls. Current neuropsychological findings in adults with OCD are mixed, thus by examining cognitive functioning in young adults with OCD aged 18-29 years could clarify whether deficits emerge during this time. A neuropsychological battery was administered to both groups. Results: Comparable performance was found in inhibitory control, information processing speed, motor speed and manual dexterity, but deficits appeared in the OCD group on decision-making, set shifting, copy time of a complex figure, and verbal memory. State anxiety showed a large effect that was correlated to performance deficits. Conclusions: Young adults with OCD have similar cognitive profiles as their healthy counterparts but they may be more anxious in testing situations. Replication of these findings with a larger sample is necessary to better understand the cognitive profile in young adults with OCD.

I. INTRODUCTION There is substantial evidence that married white men earn between 8% and 15% more than unmarried white men in the United States, even after controlling for education and informal job market experience (e.g., potential or actual experience). Cross-section analysis indicates that both the level and the growth rate of wages increase during marriage. These results suggest that men may become more productive after marriage, an effect often attributed to the increased specialization possible following the formation of a multiperson household. However, panel estimates indicate that much of the differential is explained by individual-specific fixed effects, which suggest that more productive men are more likely to marry. While these results and implications are well known, the precise nature of the implied productivity differentials has received little attention in the literature. Using the 1979 cohort of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79), we investigate the structure or source of the observed differential. We do so by first extending the analysis to a sample of African American men in the United States. To our knowledge, ours is the first study to conduct a detailed analysis of the marital wage gap among African American men that is fully comparable to that already available for white men. This extension is informative because African American households are known to exhibit less specialization along gender lines and because marital patterns are quite different by race. Next, we explore formal job training as one avenue to productivity enhancement. We outline a simple story suggesting that married men may be more receptive to training opportunities than unmarried men and present some evidence suggesting that firms may be more willing to offer training to married as compared to unmarried men. Previous analysis has focused on labor market experience or years married as proxies for both informal and formal job training. We significantly improve upon this by using direct information on formal job training to see if wage changes at or following the time of marriage are driven by training-induced productivity differentials. Third, we explore the nature of the selection effect or the possibility that it is more productive men who marry. The NLSY79 has an extensive array of information on personal characteristics that might be associated with both marriage and earnings. If certain personal characteristics are associated with both marriage and earnings, but not typically included in wage analyses, then the marital controls in standard wage equations may simply be proxying for these characteristics. Controlling for such characteristics directly should identify the nature of the selection effect and reduce the significance of the marital indicators in cross-section estimates. The attributes we examine include cognitive skills, parental background, and personality traits. Our final contribution is to estimate panel models to eliminate all observable and unobservable individual-specific, time-invariant factors and to reconcile these results with those obtained from cross-section models. Specifically, we exploit the different identification conditions between panel and cross-section models, examining the role of respondents who are always married, never married, or always separated/divorced. Technically, such individuals contribute to the identification of the cross section but not the panel estimates of the marital wage differential. Thus, these individuals may explain the substantial differences often observed between panel and cross-section estimates of the white male marital wage differential. II. OBJECTIVES: Findings from a brief geriatric assessment (GA) in a cohort of adults with multiple myeloma (MM) are presented, with particular attention to the utility of the GA in identifying important deficits in adults judged to have a normal Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS ≥ 80). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adults age 18 and older with MM were recruited into an observational study from 2018 to 2020. A modified Cancer and Aging Research Group (CARG) GA was administered at enrollment. Enrollees also completed the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life of Cancer Patients Core 30 questionnaire (QLQ-C30), with subscales of physical, social, role, and cognitive functioning (range 0-100; higher values indicate better function). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics for the full cohort and stratified by concurrent KPS (score < 80 vs ≥ 80). RESULTS: Among 89 adults, the mean age was 69.1 years, 68% were aged ≥ 65 years, and 70% were white. In this cohort, 78% had KPS ≥ 80. Among those with KPS ≥ 80, functional impairments (Timed Up and Go ≥ 14 seconds and dependence in ≥ 1 instrumental activity of daily living) were seen in 30% and 21%, respectively, with 11% reporting ≥ 1 fall in the prior 6 months. At least two GA-identified deficits were detected in 50% of the overall cohort and in 41% of those with KPS ≥ 80. Among those with KPS ≥ 80, self-reported physical impairment on EORTC QLQ-C30 was noted by 34%. CONCLUSION: Using a modified CARG GA and EORTC questionnaire, functional impairments were identified among adults considered to have a good performance status based on a KPS (≥ 80). Future studies should focus on using GA measures for therapy assignment and identifying opportunities for intervening upon GA-identified deficits.

Cognitive skills are a strong predictor of a wide range of later life outcomes. Genetic and epigenetic associations across the genome explain some of the variation in general cognitive abilities in the general population and it is plausible that epigenetic associations might arise from prenatal environmental exposures and/or genetic variation early in life. We investigated the association between cord blood DNA methylation at birth and cognitive skills assessed in children from eight pregnancy cohorts within the Pregnancy And Childhood Epigenetics (PACE) Consortium across overall (total N = 2196), verbal (total N = 2206) and non-verbal cognitive scores (total N = 3300). The associations at single CpG sites were weak for all of the cognitive domains investigated. One region near DUSP22 on chromosome 6 was associated with non-verbal cognition in a model adjusted for maternal IQ. We conclude that there is little evidence to support the idea that variation in cord blood DNA methylation at single CpG sites is associated with cognitive skills and further studies are needed to confirm the association at DUSP22. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is widely recognized as an efficacious treatment of anxiety and related disorders—however, recent research suggests that some older adults may derive reduced benefit from CBT as compared to younger adults. Age-related declines in cognition (e.g., memory, attention) may be a contributing factor to the reduced benefit seen in this population. Augmentation strategies for optimizing CBT are now under way (e.g., exercise, medication), and indicate that cognitive support and enhancement strategies can improve both cognitive skills and treatment outcome in anxious older clients. This review discusses the current literature on enhancement strategies that target CBT aptitude directly (e.g., memory aids for therapeutic material) and indirectly (e.g., use of standardized cognitive tasks unrelated to CBT) as methods of augmenting CBT. Recommendations for clinicians and directions for future research are provided.

Objective: High negative affect, low positive affect, and low cognitive functioning are depression-related states that may be particularly relevant to females who smoke cigarettes and may be more prominent following overnight tobacco abstinence. This study aimed to assess relations between depression symptom levels and negative affect, positive affect, and subjective cognitive functioning in premenopausal females who smoke. Methods: Premenopausal females who smoke daily with low (n = 66) or elevated (n = 33) baseline depression symptoms completed subjective ratings of negative affect, positive affect, and cognitive functioning pre-first cigarette (i.e., after overnight tobacco abstinence) and at random prompts throughout the day via ecological momentary assessment (EMA) for 35 days. Results: Participants with elevated depression symptoms reported overall higher negative affect (p = .01). Positive affect was significantly lower prior to the first cigarette of the day (p < .001), but did not significantly differ between depression symptom groups. Subjective cognitive functioning was significantly lower pre-first cigarette of the day (p < .001). There was a significant Depression Symptom × Prompt Type interaction for subjective cognitive functioning (p = .01). Subjective cognitive functioning did not significantly differ by depression symptom group pre-first cigarette of the day but was significantly different at random prompts throughout the day. Conclusions: As participants smoked as usual, findings identify naturalistic factors which may influence smoking behavior among premenopausal females who smoke with elevated depression symptoms. To evaluate the efficacy of Cerebrolysin in combination therapy of depressive disorders in patients with stage II dyscirculatory encephalopathy caused by atherosclerosis, 84 patients were examined. A comprehensive survey, assessing physical, neurological, mental and emotional state, as well as cognitive functioning within pre- and posttreatment periods, was carried out. Neuropsychological examination included assessment of depressive state on the Hamilton Rating Scale; evaluation of the functioning of various cognitive areas on the scale of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment; diagnostic performance parameters under the Landolt test; quality of life study, using the European Group Quality of Life questionnaire.Target symptoms were identified, with their reduction provided by Cerebrolysin therapy in the treatment of patients with atherosclerotic depression disorders: in the structure of depression symptoms — reducing the overall efficiency/activity and inhibition; in the structure of cognitive impairment — reduced level of general cognitive functioning, decreased memory and concentration, reduced accuracy and efficiency of operations; in the structure of the subjective perception of quality of life — decline in the level of acti­vity in daily life. Cerebrolysin therapy proved its high efficacy in the treatment of patients with vascular based depression disorders due to the reduction of the cognitive component of depression disorders, improving patients’ quality of life and level of their functioning, their efficiency and performance, which determines the possibility and prospects of such therapy in this group of patients.

We examined the association between cognitive functioning and health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) in military veterans with a history of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) using two methods to assess cognition: mean performance on cognitive composite scores and across-test intraindividual variability (IIV). The sample included 73 veterans (84.9% male; age, mean = 32.47 years) who completed neuropsychological testing and self-report questionnaires ∼7 years post-injury. Three cognitive composite scores representing mean performance were computed, including memory, attention/processing speed (A/PS), and executive functioning (EF). Three IIV indices were also calculated reflecting degree of dispersion across the same cognitive domains: memory-IIV, A/PS-IIV, and EF-IIV. The Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Checklist-Military Version (PCL-M) was used to assess current PTSD symptoms, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Short Version Physical Health domain was used to assess HR-QOL. Hierarchical linear regressions adjusting for PTSD symptoms demonstrated that IIV indices, but not mean cognitive composite scores, significantly predicted HR-QOL. Specifically, memory-IIV, A/PS-IIV, and EF-IIV, when taken together, made an independent and significant contribution to the prediction of HR-QOL. Examination of the standardized coefficients showed that the A/PS-IIV index was uniquely associated with HR-QOL, such that higher A/PS-IIV scores significantly predicted poorer HR-QOL. Our results are the first to show that, in veterans with remote mTBI histories, greater fluctuations in cognitive performance significantly contribute to poorer HR-QOL, even after accounting for PTSD symptom severity. Moreover, findings suggest that, compared to traditional mean cognitive performance scores, measures of IIV may represent more sensitive indicators of clinical outcome and better align with subjective experiences of distress.

Background Maternal inflammation during pregnancy can alter offspring brain development and influence risk for disorders commonly accompanied by deficits in cognitive functioning. We therefore examined associations between maternal interleukin 6 (IL-6) concentrations during pregnancy and offspring cognitive ability and concurrent magnetic resonance imaging–based measures of brain anatomy in early childhood. We further examined newborn brain anatomy in secondary analyses to consider whether effects are evident soon after birth and to increase capacity to differentiate effects of pre- versus postnatal exposures. Methods IL-6 concentrations were quantified in early (12.6 ± 2.8 weeks), mid (20.4 ± 1.5 weeks), and late (30.3 ± 1.3 weeks) pregnancy. Offspring nonverbal fluid intelligence (Gf) was assessed at 5.2 ± 0.6 years using a spatial reasoning task (Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence–Matrix) (n = 49). T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging scans were acquired at birth (n = 89, postmenstrual age = 42.9 ± 2.0 weeks) and in early childhood (n = 42, scan age = 5.1 ± 1.0 years). Regional cortical volumes were examined for a joint association between maternal IL-6 and offspring Gf performance. Results Average maternal IL-6 concentration during pregnancy was inversely associated with offspring Gf performance after adjusting for socioeconomic status and the quality of the caregiving and learning environment (R2 = 13%; p = .02). Early-childhood pars triangularis volume was jointly associated with maternal IL-6 and childhood Gf (pcorrected Conclusions These findings suggest that the origins of variation in child cognitive ability can, in part, trace back to maternal conditions during the intrauterine period of life and support the role of inflammation as an important component of this putative biological pathway.

Psychometric studies reveal a variability that ranges between 30 and 75 % for different cognitive processes, both in humans and non-human animals. This variability has been ascribed to a “general intelligence” factor (g). Current studies implemented in non-human animals to identify individual differences in cognitive skills are still far from those applied in humans. We tested for cognitive performance in a fallow deer herd using a test battery of eight tasks based on measures for cognitive development in untamed confined wild animals: motor control, spatial memory, colour and tone discrimination and inversion, inhibitory control and symbol discrimination tests. g factor explained 60 % of the variability in cognitive performance. Significant correlations, both positive and negative, were found between the different cognitive processes studied. Likewise, the cognitive performance of the group was affected by a “collective intelligence” factor (c), inferred through variables describing the hierarchical structure of the studied population but which, however does not affect individual intelligence quotient of the members of the group.

Focal white matter lesions can cause cognitive impairments due to disconnections within or between networks. There is some preliminary evidence that there are specific hubs and fiber pathways that should be spared during surgery to retain cognitive performance. A tract potentially involved in important higher-level cognitive processes is the frontal aslant tract. It roughly connects the posterior parts of the inferior frontal gyrus and the superior frontal gyrus. Functionally, the left frontal aslant tract has been associated with speech and the right tract with executive functions. However, there currently is insufficient knowledge about the right frontal aslant tract’s exact functional importance. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the right frontal aslant tract in executive functions via a lesion-symptom approach. We retrospectively examined 72 patients with frontal glial tumors and correlated measures from tractography (distance between tract and tumor, and structural integrity of the tract) with cognitive test performances. The results indicated involvement of the right frontal aslant tract in shifting attention and letter fluency. This involvement was not found for the left tract. Although this study was exploratory, these converging findings contribute to a better understanding of the functional frontal subcortical anatomy. Shifting attention and letter fluency are important for healthy cognitive functioning, and when impaired they may greatly influence a patient’s wellbeing. Further research is needed to assess whether or not damage to the right frontal aslant tract causes permanent cognitive impairments, and consequently identifies this tract as a critical pathway that should be taken into account during neurosurgical procedures.

We study the educational choices of children of immigrants in a tracked school system. We first show that immigrants in Italy enroll disproportionately into vocational high schools, as opposed to technical and academically-oriented high schools, compared to natives of similar ability. The gap is greater for male students and it mirrors an analogous differential in grade retention. We then estimate the impact of a large-scale, randomized intervention providing tutoring and career counseling to high-ability immigrant students. Male treated students increase their probability of enrolling into the high track to the same level of natives, also closing the gap in terms of grade retention. There are no significant effects on immigrant girls, who exhibit similar choices and performance as native ones in absence of the intervention. Increases in academic motivation and changes in teachers’ recommendation regarding high school choice explain a sizable portion of the effect, while the effect of increases in cognitive skills is negligible. Finally, we find positive spillovers on immigrant classmates of treated students, while there is no effect on native classmates.

Growing research shows that parent‒child relationships are reliable predictors of child executive functioning (EF), a set of cognitive skills of key importance for learning and school adjustment. However, few EF studies have considered fathers and even fewer have examined paternal mind-mindedness, an aspect of parental behavior that is gaining attention in developmental research. Accordingly, the aim of this longitudinal study (N = 108) was to investigate the role of paternal mind-mindedness in the prediction of individual differences in child EF as manifested at school. Paternal mind-mindedness was assessed during a 10-min father–toddler free play sequence when children were aged 18 months, and child EF problems were reported by teachers in kindergarten. The findings indicated that toddlers who were exposed to more paternal mind-mindedness were later considered by their teachers to present fewer EF problems in everyday school settings. The results held after controlling for other documented predictors of EF, namely mother–toddler attachment security, paternal socioeconomic status, and prenatal risk. This study underscores the relevance of parental mind-mindedness for child cognitive development and adds to growing research on fathers and their importance for child EF. Futures studies should adopt a systemic approach, including both parents and their children, to enhance the understanding of the parental and family antecedents of child EF.

El propósito de este estudio fue determinar las diferencias en el rendimiento de las habilidades cognitivas entre 25 consumidores de cigarrillo y 25 consumidores de cannabis de 18 a 30 años (ambos grupos corresponden a estudiantes universitarios) y correlacionar su desempeño con el tiempo y frecuencia de consumo. Este estudio de tipo cuantitativo, no experimental-transversal, cuyo alcance fue descriptivo, comparativo y correlacional, evidenció que los consumidores de cannabis presentaron resultados significativamente menores en cada una de las habilidades cognitivas, especialmente en las funciones ejecutivas, siendo la habilidad que presentó peor desempeño en ambos grupos. Por otro lado, la habilidad que presenta una menor brecha entre los grupos es el lenguaje, habilidad que mostró tener un mejor rendimiento en los consumidores de marihuana en comparación con las demás habilidades. A pesar de los hallazgos, no fue posible establecer la relación entre el déficit de dichas habilidades y el tiempo y la frecuencia de consumo en ningún grupo debido a que la muestra estaba constituida por consumidores recientes. Se concluye que ambos tipos de consumo influyen en el déficit de las habilidades cognitivas a corto plazo, por lo cual es importante que equipos multidisciplinarios de profesionales especializados en el área de la salud consideren acciones de prevención e intervención en aquellos pacientes jóvenes que abusan del consumo tanto de sustancias lícitas como ilícitas con el fin de minimizar los efectos tanto en la salud física como en la cognitiva en la edad adulta.

Clinical interest in using psychological interventions for people with epilepsy (PWE) aiming at decreasing mental health difficulties, improving health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and seizure-related outcomes, continues to grow. This article summarizes the 2020 update of the 2017 Cochrane Review and meta-analysis of psychological interventions for PWE, highlighting the reasons for major methodological modifications such as the recategorization of interventions and expanded risk of bias assessment. A 2020 literature search yielded 36 RCTs (n=3526) investigating psychological treatments for PWE with a validated HRQOL measure as an outcome. Twenty-seven trials were skills-based psychological interventions, whilst nine studies were education-only interventions. Among skills-based psychological interventions, 11 studies (n=643) used the Quality of Life in Epilepsy-31 (QOLIE-31) or other QOLIE inventories convertible to QOLIE-31 as an outcome measure and were pooled for meta-analysis. Significant mean changes were observed for the QOLIE-31 total score (mean improvement of 5.23 points; p< 0.001) and in six out of seven subscales (emotional well-being, energy and fatigue, overall QoL, seizure worry, medication and cognitive functioning). The mean changes in the QOLIE-31 total score and the overall QoL subscale exceeded the threshold of minimally important change (MIC), indicating clinically meaningful post-intervention improvement. These results provide moderate evidence that psychological treatments for adults and adolescents with epilepsy enhance HRQOL. In addition to the summary of the Cochrane review, we provide a detailed characterization of the interventions and patient populations of the meta-analyzed studies.

Background Many cancer survivors experience cancer-related cognitive dysfunction (CRCD), which is believed to be the result of multiple contributing biologic, situational, and personal factors. Efficacious, clinically implementable interventions addressing the multifactorial nature of CRCD are needed. Objectives This study evaluated the feasibility of an intervention to help breast cancer survivors mitigate the effects of modifiable factors that contribute to CRCD and improve cognitive functioning. Methods A single-group pre-/post-test design was used. Treatment fidelity was tracked to evaluate implementability; attendance rates, experience surveys, and homework engagement were used to characterize acceptability. Pre- and post-test cognitive functioning, stress, fatigue, and mood were measured to evaluate preliminary efficacy. Findings The intervention was implementable and acceptable to participants. Participants made statistically significant improvements.

In an increasingly digital world, those who remain offline may face greater challenges across multiple contexts of everyday life. Besides being less likely to be internet users, older age groups go online less frequently and for fewer activities. Understanding which factors facilitate or prevent internet use in later life is therefore essential to minimize existing age-based digital inequalities. Based on the 2014 and 2017 waves of the German Ageing Survey, comprising 3,479 respondents aged 40 years and older, this study examined the longitudinal relationships of a wide range of often overlooked, yet potentially relevant factors related to functional ability, social support, and self-perceptions of aging with general internet use and seven specific online behaviors. As the only factors relating to general use and a considerable number of specific uses, cognitive functioning and competence-related self-perceptions of aging emerged as the most important correlates of internet use in middle and late adulthood. Better cognitive functioning preceded contacting friends, acquaintances, and relatives, searching for information, banking, and shopping more frequently 3 years later. In turn, competence self-perceptions of aging preceded contacting others, searching for new social contacts, seeking information, banking, engaging in online entertainment, and creating contents more frequently 3 years later. Reciprocal relationships were also found between each factor and general use, suggesting mutual influences. Additionally, physical functioning and received informational support preceded greater use for specific activities. These findings elucidate which factors to consider when developing effective strategies to promote general and specific internet use among middle-aged and older adults. Il gioco rappresenta per il bambino un'attività fondamentale per la sua crescita; in particolare, quello con le costruzioni, sembra avere un ruolo rilevante per lo sviluppo cognitivo del bambino. Al fine di comprenderne la reale efficacia, numerosi studi sono stati condotti indagandone i vari aspetti in relazione a differenti abilità cognitive. Una prima area di studi riguarda la relazione tra gioco con le costruzioni e abilità visuo-spaziali, una seconda ne esamina la relazione con la matematica, una terza area mette in relazione il gioco con le costruzioni, le abilità visuo-spaziali, l'intelligenza numerica - nelle sue diverse componenti - e le immagini mentali. Tali studi lasciano presupporre che il gioco con le costruzioni rappresenti un importante strumento ludico ed educativo con elevate capacità per il potenziamento dello sviluppo cognitivo complessivo e di specifiche abilità, quali quelle matematiche. Questa rassegna narrativa propone dunque una revisione sistematica delle evidenze empiriche presenti in letteratura per tentare di comprenderne la reale efficacia. In un periodo storico in cui i device informatici stanno gradualmente sostituendo il gioco manuale che da sempre ha accompagnato lo sviluppo umano, conoscere lo stato dell'arte su questo importante ambito di ricerca potrebbe rappresentare uno spunto di riflessione al fine di rivedere la programmazione scolastica basata sul possibile ritorno a specifiche attività ludiche manuali finalizzate al potenziamento cognitivo e di specifiche abilità scolastiche.

In order to navigate in our complex social world successfully, it is crucial to maintain and practice cognitive skills that are dedicated to adaptive social functioning. Emerging evidence suggests that besides deficits in declarative memory, executive functions, and language, impairments in social cognition (SC, e.g., emotion recognition, theory of mind) are also present in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). The organic and psycho-social consequences of epilepsy surgery might have additional implications regarding this deficit. Here we qualitatively synthesize longitudinal and cross-sectional findings on SC after TLE surgery. A literature search using PubMed and Scopus identified 275 potential articles. Studies were eligible if they (1) included patients with a diagnosis of TLE, (2) included a healthy comparison group, (3) reported original research, (4) were published in peer-reviewed journals and in English language, (5) reported the intervention of epilepsy surgery. Articles that (1) were case studies, (2) did not focus on SC abilities, (3) used interviews or self-report questionnaires to examine SC functions were excluded. A total of 16 original studies assessing emotion recognition (ER) and/or theory of mind (ToM) matched our criteria. The literature suggests that neither ER nor ToM abilities change after surgery: post-surgery patients show similar impairment patterns to pre-surgery patients. Nevertheless, individual improvement or decline could be masked by group comparisons and results should be considered in light of methodological heterogeneity among studies.

PurposeThe purpose of authentic assessment can enrich students with a set of skills that can have a significant impact on their employability. The key aim of these actions is to equip students with the practical skills to be work ready. The focus here is to demonstrate effects on student satisfaction and observations from teaching staff accrued over several semesters in an educational institution after introducing authentic assessments.Design/methodology/approachThis paper used a set of scaffolded authentic assessments for students in logistics and supply chain management (LSCM). A combination of literature and expert input was used to design and implement the authentic assessment. A multi-phase systematic approach using cyclical model steps articulated the course learning outcomes (CLOs).FindingsReinforced evidence that authentic assessments create options for divergent learners and provide opportunities for applying practical and higher-order cognitive skills in tertiary education system of an emerging economy. With the focus on student ability in doing things, students with diversified backgrounds and abilities in Asia can be encouraged to take an active role in their own learning. The formats of the newly redesigned assessments allow multidimensional cognitive capabilities such as art development (posters and video tasks) and reflective exercises. Importantly, formative types of authentic assessments help to decrease the level of anxiety by emphasising the aspect of doing and lead to better student satisfaction with the courses. All of these effects are shown to be repeatable in an Asian economy.Practical implicationsAuthentic assessments prepare students for the new world of work through a more focused scaffolding of their learning.Originality/valueStimulation of deeper learning in tertiary education students is relevant for a top performing Asian economy.

Objectives:To explore the combined effect of pediatric sickle cell disease (SCD) and preterm birth on cognitive functioning.Methods:Cognitive functioning was examined in children ages 6–8 with high risk SCD genotypes born preterm (n = 20) and full-term (n = 59) and lower risk SCD genotypes/no SCD born preterm (n = 11) and full-term (n = 99) using tests previously shown to be sensitive to SCD-related neurocognitive deficits. Factorial ANOVAs and log linear analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between SCD risk, preterm birth status, and cognitive outcomes. Continuous scores were examined for specific tests. Children were categorized as having an abnormal screening outcome if at least one cognitive score was ≥1.5 standard deviations below the population mean.Results:Children with elevated risk due to high risk SCD and preterm birth performed worse than other groups on a test of expressive language but not on tests that emphasize processing speed and working memory. There was a three-way interaction between preterm status, SCD risk, and abnormal screening outcome, which was largely driven by the increased likelihood of abnormal cognitive scores for children with high risk SCD born preterm.Conclusions:The combination of SCD and preterm birth may confer increased risk for language deficits and elevated rates of abnormal cognitive screenings. This suggests that neurodevelopmental risk imparted by comorbid SCD and preterm birth may manifest as heterogenous, rather than specific, patterns of cognitive deficits. Future studies are needed to clarify the domains of cognitive functioning most susceptible to disease-related effects of comorbid SCD and preterm birth.

Prior research reveals that spatial navigation skills rely mostly in visual sensory abilities, but the study of how spatial processing operates in the absence of visual information is still incomplete. Therefore, a spatial navigation task in virtual reality using auditory cues was developed to study navigational strategies in blindfolded sighted individuals. Twenty healthy adult participants were recruited. The task consisted of a VR scene, in which participants were asked to localize a sound source and move to the target without visual information throughout the entire task. Task difficulty was manipulated by route length and complexity in three different difficulty levels repeated in two different trials. The first trial (learning) consisted of moving to the sound source and then returning to the starting point. The second trial (retrieval) consisted of the same task without the sound source but with auditory cues from obstacles to test spatial learning. Performance was assessed from behavioral measures of execution time, obstacle collisions, and prompts during the task execution. These variables were compared to established neuropsychological instruments for global cognition (Montreal Cognitive Assessment) and memory abilities (Wechsler Memory Scale-R). The results suggested that difficulty level affected navigation performance in both trials. Navigation performance was better in the retrieval trial, but both learning and retrieval trials were explained by global cognitive functioning. These data suggested the Soundspace VR as being effective to study spatial navigation in the absence of visual information and highlight the importance of auditory information from spatial sound cues for spatial navigation and spatial learning.

Interest in social emotional learning (SEL) is higher than ever, as parents, educators, and policymakers recognize that children need more than cognitive skills for later life success. However, most SEL research has been conducted in formal education settings. This article describes results from an empirical study of 4–5 years old SEL in two informal learning settings, including children’s museums and community playgrounds. Members of the Children’s Museum Research Network observed 606 preschool children using the Revised/Shortened Minnesota Preschool Affect Checklist (MPAC-R/S). Findings show that preschool children engaged in SEL in both settings, but that significantly more instances of SEL were seen in children’s museums compared with community playgrounds. We argue that children’s museums may provide an important, peer-to-peer opportunity for children to develop and practice their SEL, one that is unique from the more common teacher-child interactions provided in schools.

Aim Cognitive deficits are recognized features of depressive disorders in youth aged 12-25. These deficits are distressing, predict functional impairment and limit the effectiveness of psychological therapies. Cognitive enhancement using behavioural, biochemical or physical treatments may be useful in young people with depression, but studies have not been synthesized. The aim was to systematically review the evidence for treatments for objective and subjective cognitive functioning, and their acceptability and functional outcomes in people aged 12-25 with depression. Method Three electronic databases were searched for articles using pre-specified criteria. Pharmacological treatments were not eligible. Risk of bias was rated using the Cochrane Collaboration's revised risk-of-bias tool. Dual full-text article screening, data extraction and quality ratings were completed. Results Twelve studies were included for review (median participant age: 20.39 years), five of which were randomized-controlled trials (RCTs). Sample sizes were generally small (median = 23; range: 9-46). Eight studies investigated behavioural treatments including aerobic exercise, cognitive training and education or strategy-based methods. Four studies examined repetitive transcranial magnetic brain stimulation (rTMS). Most behavioural treatments revealed preliminary evidence of improved cognitive function in youth depression. Consent rates were greatest for exercise- and education-based approaches, which may indicate higher acceptability levels. Findings from rTMS trials were mixed, with only half showing cognitive improvement. Functional outcomes were reported by three behavioural treatment trials and one rTMS trial, with functional improvement reported only in the former. Some concern of risk of bias was found in each RCT. Conclusion Behavioural treatments, such as exercise, cognitive training and education/strategy-focused techniques, show encouraging results and appear to be acceptable methods of addressing cognitive deficits in youth depression based on participation rates. Brain stimulation and biochemical treatments (e.g., nutrient-based treatment) require further investigation.

Despite their high prevalence and clinical importance in autism, unusual and restricted interests remain under-researched and poorly understood. This study aimed to characterize the frequency and type of interests in autism by coding caregivers’ open-ended responses in a sample of 237 autistic children and adolescents ( Mage = 8.27 years, SDage = 4.07; range: 2.08–18.25 years). It further aimed to explore the effects of age, sex, cognitive functioning and social and communication deficits on the number and type of interests. We found that 75% of autistic youth had at least one interest and that 50% of those children showed two or more different interests. The most frequent interests were sensory-based (43%), with a majority of these interests relating to the visual modality. Interest within vehicles/transportation, fictional characters, television/digital versatile disk/movies, computers, and video games, constructive, mechanical objects, animals and plants, and attachment to specific objects were also prevalent. Logistic regression showed that being male, having a co-occurring intellectual disability and having more severe social and communication impairments were associated with a higher probability of having one or more restricted interests. Sex was significantly associated with the type (χ2 = 37.52, Phi = 0.37, p = 0.021) of restricted interests, with females showing a significantly higher percentage of creative interests and males significantly higher percentage of interest in characters, vehicles/transportation, computers/video games, mechanical objects and constructive interests. Theoretical and measurement implications are discussed. Lay abstract Despite being highly prevalent among people with autism, restricted and unusual interests remain under-researched and poorly understood. This article confirms that restricted interests are very frequent and varied among children and adolescents with autism. It also further extends current knowledge in this area by characterizing the relationship between the presence, number, and type of restricted interests with chronological age, sex, cognitive functioning, and social and communication symptoms.
