1. Environmentally Friendly Water-Based Electrolyte for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: Future Prospective and Outlook

Abstract

The use of traditional Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is limited due to the use of toxic and non-environmentally safe solvents. In this review, water is proposed as a viable alternative to developing green chemistry and sustainable materials for DSSCs. However, water-based DSSCs (WBDSSCs) require improvement in their photovoltaic parameters. The detachment of dye molecules from the semiconductor and the poor solubility of iodine in water are the primary reasons for their low efficiency. This review analyzes the best results achieved by 100% aqueous electrolytes containing synthetic, organic, and natural dyes to identify the best conditions to overcome these limitations. Developing a suitable photoanode/electrolyte interface and finding a compromise in the choice of dye are the main research goals in the coming years. WBDSSCs can contribute significantly to producing clean energy using sustainable and environmentally friendly materials. Furthermore, here we report the state of the art of the emerging technology of underwater dye-sensitized solar cells, which are a promising technology for generating renewable energy in aquatic environments. Recent advancements in material science and device engineering have shown promising results in enhancing their efficiency and durability. Further research and development can make these devices a viable alternative for sustainable energy generation in a wide range of underwater applications.

2. Racial and ethnic differences in self-reported satisfaction with fertility clinics and doctors

Abstract

Objective: To investigate if differences in self-reported satisfaction with fertility clinics and doctors differ by race/ethnicity. Study Design: We used cross-sectional survey data from FertilityIQ online questionnaires completed by patients receiving U.S. fertility care from July 2015 to December 2020. Univariate and multivariate logistic and linear regression analyses performed to assess association of race/ethnicity on patient reported clinic and physician satisfaction. Results: Our total sample size included 21,472 patients (15,986 Caucasian, 1,856 Black, 1,780 LatinX, 771 East Asian, 619 South Asian, 273 Middle Eastern, 187 Native American self-reported). When adjusting for all confounders (demographic and patient satisfaction), we found that Black patients rated their doctors more highly (OR 1.30, 95% CI 1.04-1.62 p=0.022 logistic and Coef 0.082, 95% CI 0.013-0.15 p=0.02 linear), while other ethnic groups did not show significant differences compared to Caucasian patients. East Asians had borderline lower satisfaction with clinic satisfaction in logistic regression (OR 0.74 95% CI 0.55-1.00 p=0.05), while significant differences were not found for other ethnic groups for clinic satisfaction. Conclusions: In summary, some but not all minority groups differed in their self-reported perception of satisfaction with fertility clinic and doctors compared to Caucasian patients. Cultural differences towards surveys may contribute to some of these findings, and satisfaction by racial/ethnic group may also be modified by results of care.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: 1) Untuk mengetahui hubungan kekuatan otot lengan dengan kemampuan passing bawah peserta Ekstrakurikuler Bola Voli SMA Taruna Dharma Timika Papua. 2) Untuk mengetahui hubungan kordinasi mata tangan dengan kemampuan passing bawah peserta Ekstrakurikuler Bola Voli SMA Taruna Dharma Timika Papua. 3) Untuk mengetahui hubungan kekuatan otot lengan dan kordinasi mata tangan dengan kemampuan passing bawah peserta Ekstrakurikuler Bola Voli SMA Taruna Dharma Timika Papua. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian korelasional. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh peserta Ekstrakurikuler Bola Voli SMA Taruna Dharma Timika Papua sebanyak 30 Orang. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa: 1) Ada hubungan yang signifikan antara kekuatan otot lengan dengan kemampuan passing bawah peserta Ekstrakurikuler Bola Voli SMA Taruna Dharma Timika Papua dengan nilai rx2.y = 0,818 > r (0.05) (30) = 0,349. 2) Ada hubungan yang signifikan antara koordinasi mata tangan dengan kemampuan passing bawah peserta Ekstrakurikuler Bola Voli SMA Taruna Dharma Timika Papua dengan nilai rx3.y = 0,515 > r(0.05)(30) = 0,349. 3) Ada hubungan yang signifikan antara kekuatan otot lengan dan koordinasi mata tangan dengan kemampuan passing bawah peserta Ekstrakurikuler Bola Voli SMA Taruna Dharma Timika Papua dengan nilai Ry (x1.x2.x3) = 0,829 > R (0.05) (30) = 0,349.

Abstract

Kalkulus integral merupakan salah satu mata kuliah matematika yang memerlukan tingkat penalaran, kemampuan komunikasi serta kemampuan berpikir tingkat tinggi yang memadai untuk dapat memahami dan menyelesaikan soal. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi kesalahan mahasiswa berdasarkan Newman’s Error Analysis (NEA) dalam menyelesaikan soal kalkulus integral disertai dengan pemberian scaffolding. Subjek penelitian adalah mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Matematika STKIP Hermon Timika yang mengikuti perkuliahan kalkulus integral. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tidak ada kesalahan yang dilakukan mahasiswa pada tipe indikator 1 (reading error), mahasiswa rata-rata melakukan kesalahan pada indikator 2 (comprehension error) sebesar 39%, rata-rata kesalahan pada indikator 3 (transformation error) sebesar 71%, rata-rata kesalahan pada indikator 4 (process skills error) sebesar 76% dan rata-rata kesalahan yang paling banyak dilakukan pada indikator 5 (encoding error) sebesar 87%. Scaffolding yang digunakan untuk mengatasi semua kesalahan mahasiswa hanya sampai pada scaffolding level 2 yaitu explaining, reviewing, dan restructuring. Pemberian scaffolding yang dilakukan dosen bersifat menjelaskan, meninjau dan merestrukturisasi sehingga mendorong mahasiswa untuk memperbaiki kesalahan-kesalahan tersebut. Bertolak dari hasil penelitian ini, maka dosen diharapkan untuk melakukan kegiatan perkuliahan yang bermakna bagi mahasiswa Studi Pendidikan Matematika STKIP Hermon Timika, sehingga tidak mudah untuk melupakan konsep-konsep materi yang telah dijelaskan.

Abstract

Background: Although the assessment of right ventricular (RV) diastolic function is feasible, it has garnered far less momentum for use compared with its left ventricular counterpart. The scarcity of data defining normative RV diastolic function and the fact that implications of RV diastolic dysfunction in different disease states on outcomes are less well known both hinder integration into routine clinical assessment. The aim of this study was to establish normal values of RV diastolic parameters stratified by sex, age, and race using data from the World Alliance Societies of Echocardiography study. Methods: A subset of 888 normal subjects from the World Alliance Societies of Echocardiography database were analyzed, including measurements of tricuspid valve (TV) inflow E- and A-wave velocities, E-wave deceleration time, and TV annular tissue Doppler e′ and a′ velocities. Additionally, right atrial (RA) maximal volume and RA peak reservoir strain were measured. Patients were grouped by age ([removed]65 years) and stratified by sex and race. Differences were analyzed using unpaired t tests. Results: Compared with men, women had significantly higher TV e′ and E-wave and A-wave velocities, though differences were modest. Increasing age was associated with stepwise lower TV E wave, e′ velocity, and TV E/A ratio and higher a′ velocity and E/e′ ratio. RA peak reservoir strain was also lower, and RA end-systolic volume trended toward being smaller for older age groups. Asian subjects demonstrated significantly higher a′ velocities, lower E wave, the smallest RA end-systolic volumes, and the lowest RA peak strain values compared with white subjects of both sexes. Conclusions: This study provides normal values for parameters used in the assessment of RV diastolic function stratified by race, sex, and age. The results demonstrate significant differences in RV diastolic parameters between age groups, which manifest in both individual parameters and composite ratios of TV inflow and annular velocities. Although limited sex- and race-related differences were also noted, age appears to have the most significant impact on RV diastolic parameters. These findings may aid in refining current normative values.

Abstract

ObjectiveThe advantage of beta-blockers has been postulated in patients with Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) given the pathophysiological role of catecholamines. We hypothesised that beta-blocker treatment after discharge may improve the long-term clinical outcome in this patient population.MethodsThis was an observational, multicentre study including consecutive patients with TTS diagnosis prospectively enrolled in the Takotsubo Italian Network (TIN) register from January 2007 to December 2018. TTS was diagnosed according to the TIN, Heart Failure Association and InterTAK Diagnostic Criteria. The primary study outcome was the occurrence of all-cause death at the longest available follow-up; secondary outcomes were TTS recurrence, cardiac and non-cardiac death.ResultsThe study population included 825 patients (median age: 72.0 (63.0–78.0) years; 91.9 % female): 488 (59.2%) were discharged on beta-blockers and 337 (40.8%) without beta-blockers. The median follow-up was 24.0 months. The adjusted Cox regression analysis showed a significantly lower risk for all-cause death (adjusted HR: 0.563; 95% CI: 0.356 to 0.889) and non-cardiac death (adjusted HR: 0.525; 95% CI: 0.309 to 0.893) in patients receiving versus those not receiving beta-blockers, but no significant differences in terms of TTS recurrence (adjusted HR: 0.607; 95% CI: 0.311 to 1.187) and cardiac death (adjusted HR: 0.699; 95% CI: 0.284 to 1.722). The positive survival effect of beta-blockers was higher in patients with hypertension than in those without (pinteraction=0.014), and in patients who developed cardiogenic shock during the acute phase than in those who did not (pinteraction=0.047).ConclusionsIn this real-world register population, beta-blockers were associated with a significantly higher long-term survival, particularly in patients with hypertension and in those who developed cardiogenic shock during the acute phase.

Abstract

We investigate the switching current distributions of ferromagnetic anomalous Josephson junctions subjected to a linearly increasing bias current. Our study uncovers a significant correlation between the position of the switching current distributions and crucial system parameters, such as the strength of the spin-orbit coupling and the Gilbert damping parameter. This indicates that these parameters can be directly determined through experimental measurements. By conducting a comprehensive analysis of the interplay among noise, magnetization, phase dynamics, and the statistical properties of the switching current distribution, we deepen our understanding of these intriguing cryogenic spintronics devices. These findings hold potential for applications in the field of quantum computing architectures and information processing technologies., 6 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Background: Although increased left ventricular (LV) mass is associated with adverse outcomes, measured values vary widely depending on the specific technique used. Moreover, the impact of sex, age, and race on LV mass remains controversial, further limiting the clinical use of this parameter. Accordingly, the authors studied LV mass using a variety of two-dimensional and three-dimensional echocardiographic techniques in a large population of normal subjects encompassing a wide range of ages. Methods: Transthoracic echocardiograms obtained from 1,854 healthy adult subjects (52% men) enrolled in the World Alliance Societies of Echocardiography (WASE) Normal Values Study, were divided into three age groups (young, 18-35 years; middle aged, 36-55 years; and old, >55 years). LV mass was obtained using five conventional techniques, including linear and two-dimensional methods, as well as direct three-dimensional measurement. All LV mass values were indexed to body surface area, and differences according to sex, age, and race were analyzed for each technique. Results: LV mass values differed significantly among the five techniques. Three-dimensional measurements were considerably smaller than those obtained using the other techniques and were closer to magnetic resonance imaging normal values reported in the literature. For all techniques, LV mass in men was significantly larger than in women, with and without body surface area indexing. These technique- and sex-related differences were larger than measurement variability. In women, age differences in LV mass were more pronounced and depicted significantly larger values in older age groups for all techniques, except three-dimensional echocardiography, which showed essentially no differences. LV mass was overall larger in black subjects than in white or Asian subjects. Conclusions: Significant differences in LV mass values exist across echocardiographic techniques, which are therefore not interchangeable. Sex-, race-, and age-related differences underscore the need for separate population specific normal values.

Abstract

Aims Aortic valve area (AVA) used for echocardiographic assessment of aortic stenosis (AS) has been traditionally interpreted independently of sex, age and race. As differences in normal values might impact clinical decision-making, we aimed to establish sex-, age- and race-specific normative values for AVA and Doppler parameters using data from the World Alliance Societies of Echocardiography (WASE) Study. Methods and results Two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiographic studies were obtained from 1903 healthy adult subjects (48% women). Measurements of the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) diameter and Doppler parameters, including AV and LVOT velocity time integrals (VTIs), AV mean pressure gradient, peak velocity, were obtained according to ASE/EACVI guidelines. AVA was calculated using the continuity equation. Compared with men, women had smaller LVOT diameters and AVA values, and higher AV peak velocities and mean gradients (all P < 0.05). LVOT and AV VTI were significantly higher in women (P < 0.05), and both parameters increased with age in both sexes. AVA differences persisted after indexing to body surface area. According to the current diagnostic criteria, 13.5% of women would have been considered to have mild AS and 1.4% moderate AS. LVOT diameter and AVA were lower in older subjects, both men and women, and were lower in Asians, compared with whites and blacks. Conclusion WASE data provide clinically relevant information about significant differences in normal AVA and Doppler parameters according to sex, age, and race. The implementation of this information into clinical practice should involve development of specific normative values for each ethnic group using standardized methodology.

Abstract

Acute heart failure (AHF) is the most frequent cause of unplanned hospital admission in patients of >65 years of age and it is associated with significantly increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Different AHF classification criteria have been proposed, mainly reflecting the clinical heterogeneity of the syndrome. Regardless of the underlying mechanism, peripheral and/or pulmonary congestion is present in the vast majority of cases. Furthermore, a marked reduction in cardiac output with peripheral hypoperfusion may occur in most severe cases. Diagnosis is made on the basis of signs and symptoms, laboratory, and non-invasive tests. After exclusion of reversible causes, AHF therapeutic interventions mainly consist of intravenous (IV) diuretics and/or vasodilators, tailored according to the initial hemodynamic status with the addition of inotropes/vasopressors and mechanical circulatory support if needed. The aim of this review is to discuss current concepts on the diagnosis and management of AHF in order to guide daily clinical practice and to underline the unmet needs. Preventive strategies are also discussed.

Abstract

Background: Normal values for three-dimensional (3D) right ventricular (RV) size and function are not well established, as they originate from small studies that involved predominantly white North American and European populations, did not use RV-focused views, and relied on older 3D RV analysis software. The World Alliance Societies of Echocardiography study was designed to generate reference ranges for normal subjects around the world. The aim of this study was to assess the worldwide capability of 3D imaging of the right ventricle and report size and function measurements, including their dependency on age, sex, and ethnicity. Methods: Healthy subjects free of cardiac, pulmonary, and renal disease were prospectively enrolled at 19 centers in 15 countries, representing six continents. Three-dimensional wide-angle RV data sets were obtained and analyzed using dedicated RV software (TomTec) to measure end-diastolic volume (EDV), end-systolic volume (ESV), stroke volume, and ejection fraction (EF). Results were categorized by sex, age (18-40, 41-65, and >65years) and ethnicity. Results: Of the 2,007 subjects with attempted 3D RV acquisitions, 1,051 had adequate image quality for confident measurements. Upper and lower limits for body surface area-indexed EDV, ESV, and EF were 48 and 95 mL/m2, 19 and 43 mL/m2, and 44% and 58%, respectively, for men and 42 and 81 mL/m2, 16 and 36 mL/m2, and 46% and 61%, respectively, for women. Abstract

Background: Left ventricular (LV) circumferential strain has received less attention than longitudinal deformation, which has recently become part of routine clinical practice. Among other reasons, this is because of the lack of established normal values. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to establish normative values for LV circumferential strain and determine sex-, age-, and race-related differences in a large cohort of healthy adults. Methods: Complete two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiograms were obtained in 1,572 healthy subjects (51% men), enrolled in the World Alliance Societies of Echocardiography Normal Values Study. Subjects were divided into three age groups (55 years) and stratified by sex and by race. Vendor-independent semiautomated speckle-tracking software was used to determine LV regional circumferential strain and global circumferential strain (GCS) values. Limits of normal for each measurement were defined as 95% of the corresponding sex and age group falling between the 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles. Intergroup differences were analyzed using unpaired t tests. Results: Circumferential strain showed a gradient, with lower magnitude at the mitral valve level, increasing progressively toward the apex. Compared with men, women had statistically higher magnitudes of regional and global strain. Older age was associated with a stepwise increase in GCS despite an unaffected ejection fraction, a decrease in LV volume, and relatively stable global longitudinal strain in men, with a small gradual decrease in women. Asian subjects demonstrated significantly higher GCS magnitudes than whites of both sexes and blacks among women only. In contrast, no significant differences in GCS were found between white and black subjects of either sex. Importantly, despite statistical significance of these differences across sex, age, and race, circumferential strain values were similar in all groups, with variations of the order of magnitude of 1% to 2%. Notably, no differences in GCS were found among brands of imaging equipment. Conclusion: This study established normal values of LV regional circumferential strain and GCS and identified sex-, age-, and race-related differences when present.

17. Digital Devices Use and Fine Motor Skills in Children between 3–6 Years

Abstract

(1) Background: The principal aim of our research was to explore the relationship between digital devices use and fine motor skills in children aged three to six years and to explore the effect of some socio-demographic factors. (2) Methods: we enrolled 185 children aged between three to six years. The parents of all the participants fulfilled a questionnaire to explore the digital device use, and their children performed a standardized test to assess fine motor skills (APCM-2). We performed the Spearman correlation test to explore the relationship between different variables. (3) Results: the children spent an average of 3.08 ± 2.30 h/day on digital devices. We did not find a significant association between the time of use of digital devices and fine motor skills (p = 0.640; r = −0.036). The youngest children experienced digital tools earlier than older ones (p < 0.001; r = 0.424) and they were also the ones who used digital tools more time afterwards (p = 0.012; −0.202). The children who had working parents spent more time on digital devices (p = 0.028; r = 0.164/p = 0.037; r = 0.154) and used digital devices earlier (p = 0.023; r = 0.171). (4) Conclusions: This data suggest that it would be useful to monitor the use of digital tools, especially in the very first years of life. Future studies are needed to further explore this topic.

18. J0332-3557: A comprehensive metallicity analysis of a z~3.8 gravitationally lensed galaxy

Abstract

We provide one of the most comprehensive metallicity studies at z ~ 4 by analyzing the UV/optical HST photometry, and rest-frame VLT-FORS2 ultraviolet and VLT-XSHOOTER optical spectra of J0332-3557, a gravitationally lensed galaxy magnified by a factor of 20. With a 5{\sigma} detection of the auroral O III] {\lambda}1666 line, we are able to derive a direct gas metallicity estimate for our target. We find Zgas = 12 + log(O/H) = 8.26 +/- 0.06, which is compatible with an increasing of both the gas fraction and the outflow metal loading factor from z ~ 0 to z ~ 4. J0332 is the most metal-rich individual galaxy at z > 3.6 for which the C/O ratio has been measured. We derive a low log(C/O)= -1.02 +/- 0.2, which suggests that J0332 is in the early stages of ISM carbon enrichment driven mostly by massive stars. The low C/O also indicates that J0332 is characterized by a low star formation efficiency, higher yields of oxygen and longer burst duration. We find that the EW[C III]1906,9 is as low as ~ 3 {\AA}. The main drivers of the low EW[C III]1906,9 are the higher gas metallicity and the low C/O. J0332 is characterized by one diffuse and two more compact regions ~ 1 kpc in size. Abstract

Purpose: Alteration in cell death is a hallmark of cancer. A functional role regulating survival, apoptosis, and necroptosis has been attributed to RIP1/3 complexes.Experimental Design: We have investigated the role of RIP1 and the effects of MC2494 in cell death induction, using different methods as flow cytometry, transcriptome analysis, immunoprecipitation, enzymatic assays, transfections, mutagenesis, and in vivo studies with different mice models.Results: Here, we show that RIP1 is highly expressed in cancer, and we define a novel RIP1/3–SIRT1/2–HAT1/4 complex. Mass spectrometry identified five acetylations in the kinase and death domain of RIP1. The novel characterized pan-SIRT inhibitor, MC2494, increases RIP1 acetylation at two additional sites in the death domain. Mutagenesis of the acetylated lysine decreases RIP1-dependent cell death, suggesting a role for acetylation of the RIP1 complex in cell death modulation. Accordingly, MC2494 displays tumor-selective potential in vitro, in leukemic blasts ex vivo, and in vivo in both xenograft and allograft cancer models. Mechanistically, MC2494 induces bona fide tumor-restricted acetylated RIP1/caspase-8–mediated apoptosis. Excitingly, MC2494 displays tumor-preventive activity by blocking 7,12-dimethylbenz(α)anthracene–induced mammary gland hyperproliferation in vivo.Conclusions: These preventive features might prove useful in patients who may benefit from a recurrence-preventive approach with low toxicity during follow-up phases and in cases of established cancer predisposition. Abstract

Aims: Sacubitril/valsartan has changed the treatment of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), due to the positive effects on morbidity and mortality, partly mediated by left ventricular (LV) reverse remodelling (LVRR). The aim of this multicenter study was to identify echocardiographic predictors of LVRR after sacubitril/valsartan administration. Methods and results: Patients with HFrEF requiring therapy with sacubitril/valsartan from 13 Italian centres were included. Echocardiographic parameters including LV global longitudinal strain (GLS) and global peak atrial longitudinal strain by speckle tracking echocardiography were measured to find the predictors of LVRR [=LV end-systolic volume reduction ≥10% and ejection fraction (LVEF) improvement ≥10% at follow-up] at 6month follow-up as the primary endpoint. Changes in symptoms [New York Heart Association (NYHA) class] and neurohormonal activations [N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP)] were also evaluated as secondary endpoints; 341 patients (excluding patients with poor acoustic windows and missing data) were analysed (mean age: 65±10years; 18% female, median LVEF 30% [inter-quartile range: 25-34]). Abstract

Purpose: High mortality and a limited performance of valvular surgery are typical features of infective endocarditis (IE) in octogenarians, even though surgical treatment is a major determinant of a successful outcome in IE. Methods: Data from the prospective multicentre ESC EORP EURO-ENDO registry were used to assess the prognostic role of valvular surgery depending on age. Results: As compared to < 80yo patients, ≥ 80yo had lower rates of theoretical indication for valvular surgery (49.1% vs. 60.3%, p < 0.001), of surgery performed (37.0% vs. 75.5%, p < 0.001), and a higher in-hospital (25.9% vs. 15.8%, p < 0.001) and 1-year mortality (41.3% vs. 22.2%, p < 0.001). By multivariable analysis, age per se was not predictive of 1-year mortality, but lack of surgical procedures when indicated was strongly predictive (HR 2.98 [2.43–3.66]). By propensity analysis, 304 ≥ 80yo were matched to 608 < 80yo patients. Propensity analysis confirmed the lower rate of indication for valvular surgery (51.3% vs. 57.2%, p = 0.031) and of surgery performed (35.3% vs. 68.4%, p < 0.0001) in ≥ 80yo. Overall mortality remained higher in ≥ 80yo (in-hospital: HR 1.50[1.06–2.13], p = 0.0210; 1-yr: HR 1.58[1.21–2.05], p = 0.0006), but was not different from that of < 80yo among those who had surgery (in-hospital: 19.7% vs. 20.0%, p = 0.4236; 1-year: 27.3% vs. 25.5%, p = 0.7176). Conclusion: Although mortality rates are consistently higher in ≥ 80yo patients than in < 80yo patients in the general population, mortality of surgery in ≥ 80yo is similar to < 80yo after matching patients. These results confirm the importance of a better recognition of surgical indication and of an increased performance of surgery in ≥ 80yo patients.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan minat belajar dan hasil belajar matematika dengan penggunaan model pembelajaran snowball throwing dengan ice breaking pada peserta didik kelas VIII SMP Negeri 5 Tobadak tahun pelajaran 2020/2021. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas (classroom action research). Desain penelitian ini menggunakan modifikasi model Kemmis & McTaggart dalam 2 siklus terdiri dari perencanaan, pelaksanaan, pengamatan, dan refleksi. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII SMP Negeri 5 Tobadak yang berjumlah 20 siswa. Objek penelitian adalah meningkatkan minat belajar dan hasil belajar melalui model pembelajaran model pembelajaran snowball throwing dengan ice breaking. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan observasi, dokumentasi, tes, dan angket. Instrument penelitian menggunakan lembar observasi, soal tes hasil belajar dan angket. Teknik analisis data dilakukan secara deskriptif kuantitatif dan deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hasil belajar siswa pada siklus I nilai rata-rata sebesar 53,95% dan persentase ketuntasan belajar sebesar 10% selanjutnya Pada siklus II nilai rata-rata siswa menjadi 75,15% dan Persentase ketuntasan belajar siswa menjadi 85 % kemudian untuk perkembangan minat dapat dilihat pada siklus I dimana hasil yang didapat masih berada pada kategori rendah dengan nilai rata-rata 67% selanjutnya pada siklus II hasil angket minat belajar meningkat, dimana nilai rata-rata yang diperoleh sebesar 79% dengan kriteria cukup. Dengan ini dapat dinyatakan indikator keberhasilan telah tercapai pada siklus II.

Abstract

Background COVID-19 infection is known to cause a wide array of clinical chronic sequelae, but little is known regarding the long-term cardiac complications. We aim to report echocardiographic follow-up findings and describe the changes in left (LV) and right ventricular (RV) function that occur following acute infection. Methods Patients enrolled in the World Alliance Societies of Echocardiography-COVID study with acute COVID-19 infection were asked to return for a follow-up transthoracic echocardiogram. Overall, 198 returned at a mean of 129 days of follow-up, of which 153 had paired baseline and follow-up images that were analyzable, including LV volumes, ejection fraction (LVEF), and longitudinal strain (LVLS). Right-sided echocardiographic parameters included RV global longitudinal strain, RV free wall strain, and RV basal diameter. Paired echocardiographic parameters at baseline and follow-up were compared for the entire cohort and for subgroups based on the baseline LV and RV function. Results For the entire cohort, echocardiographic markers of LV and RV function at follow-up were not significantly different from baseline (all P > .05). Patients with hyperdynamic LVEF at baseline (>70%), had a significant reduction of LVEF at follow-up (74.3% ± 3.1% vs 64.4% ± 8.1%, P < .001), while patients with reduced LVEF at baseline (−20%) at baseline had significant improvement at follow-up (−15.2% ± 3.4% vs −17.4% ± 4.9%, P = .004). Patients with abnormal RV basal diameter (>4.5 cm) at baseline had significant improvement at follow-up (4.9 ± 0.7 cm vs 4.6 ± 0.6 cm, P = .019). Conclusions Overall, there were no significant changes over time in the LV and RV function of patients recovering from COVID-19 infection. However, differences were observed according to baseline LV and RV function, which may reflect recovery from the acute myocardial injury occurring in the acutely ill. Left ventricular and RV function tends to improve in those with impaired baseline function, while it tends to decrease in those with hyperdynamic LV or normal RV function.

Abstract

Background: The World Alliance Societies of Echocardiography (WASE) study was conducted to describe echocardiographic normal values in adults and to compare races and nationalities using a uniform acquisition and measurement protocol. This report focuses on left ventricular (LV) diastolic function. Methods: WASE is an international, cross-sectional study. Participants were enrolled with equal distribution according to age and gender. Echocardiograms were analyzed in a core laboratory based on the latest American Society of Echocardiography/European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging guidelines. Left ventricular diastolic function was assessed by E, E/A, e' velocities, E/e', left atrial volume index (LAVI), and tricuspid regurgitation velocity. Determination of LV diastolic function was made using the algorithm proposed by the guidelines. Results: A total of 2,008 subjects from 15 countries were enrolled. The majority were of white or Asian race (42.8%, 41.8%, respectively). E and E/e' were higher in female patients, while LAVI was similar in both genders. Consistent increase in E/e' and decrease in E/A, E, and e' were found as age increased. The upper limit of normal for LAVI was higher in WASE compared with the guidelines. The lower limits of normal for e' were smaller in elder groups than those in the guidelines, while the upper limits of normal for E/e' were below the guideline values. These findings suggest that the cutoff value for LAVI should be shifted upward and age-specific cutoff values for e' should be considered. In WASE

Abstract

This is the first part of a scientific statement from the Heart Failure Association (HFA) of the European Society of Cardiology focused upon the pathophysiology of Takotsubo syndrome and is complimentary to the previous HFA position statement on Takotsubo syndrome which focused upon clinical management. In part 1 we provide an overview of the pathophysiology of Takotsubo syndrome and fundamental questions to consider. We then review and discuss the central role of catecholamines and the sympathetic nervous system in the pathophysiology, and the direct effects of high surges in catecholamines upon myocardial biology including β-adrenergic receptor signalling, G-protein coupled receptor kinases, cardiomyocyte calcium physiology, myofilament physiology, cardiomyocyte gene expression, myocardial electrophysiology and arrhythmogenicity, myocardial inflammation, metabolism and energetics. Abstract

Insulin-producing cells derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are promising candidates for β cell replacement in type 1 diabetes. However, the risk of teratoma formation due to residual undifferentiated iPSCs contaminating the differentiated cells is still a critical concern for clinical application. Here, we hypothesized that pretreatment of iPSC-derived insulin-producing cells with an anti-CD30 antibody–drug conjugate could prevent in vivo teratoma formation by selectively killing residual undifferentiated cells. CD30 is expressed in all human iPSCs clones tested by flow cytometry (n = 7) but not in iPSC-derived β cells (iβs). Concordantly, anti-CD30 treatment in vitro for 24 h induced a dose-dependent cell death (up to 90%) in human iPSCs while it did not kill iβs nor had an impact on iβ identity and function, including capacity to secrete insulin in response to stimuli. In a model of teratoma assay associated with iβ transplantation, the pretreatment of cells with anti-CD30 for 24 h before the implantation into NOD-SCID mice completely eliminated teratoma development (0/10 vs. 8/8, p < 0.01). These findings suggest that short-term in vitro treatment with clinical-grade anti-CD30, targeting residual undifferentiated cells, eliminates the tumorigenicity of iPSC-derived β cells, potentially providing enhanced safety for iPSC-based β cell replacement therapy in clinical scenarios.

Abstract

Converting charge current into spin current is one of the main mechanisms exploited in spintronics. One prominent example is the Edelstein effect, namely the generation of a magnetization in response to an external electric field, which can be realized in systems with lack of inversion symmetry. If a system has electrons with an orbital angular momentum character, an orbital magnetization can be generated by the applied electric field giving rise to the so-called orbital Edelstein effect. Oxide heterostructures are the ideal platform for these effects due to the strong spin-orbit coupling and the lack of inversion symmetries. Beyond a gate-tunable spin Edelstein effect, we predict an orbital Edelstein effect an order of magnitude larger then the spin one at the (111) LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface. We model the material as a bilayer of $t_{2g}$ orbitals using a tight-binding approach, while transport properties are obtained in the Boltzmann approach. We give an effective model at low filling which explains the non-trivial behaviour of the Edelstein response, showing that the hybridization between the electronic bands crucially impacts the Edelstein susceptibility., 12 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

International audience; AIMS: To evaluate the current management and survival of patients with left-sided infective endocarditis (IE) complicated by congestive heart failure (CHF) in the ESC-EORP European Endocarditis (EURO-ENDO) registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: Among the 3116 patients enrolled in this prospective registry, 2449 (mean age: 60 years, 69% male) with left-sided (native or prosthetic) IE were included in this study. Patients with CHF (n~=~698, 28.5%) were older, with more comorbidity and more severe valvular damage (mitro-aortic involvement, vegetations >10\,mm and severe regurgitation/new prosthesis dehiscence) than those without CHF (all p\,≤q\,0.019). Abstract

Takotsubo syndrome is an acute reversible heart failure syndrome, most frequently seen in postmenopausal women and precipitated generally by significant emotional stress or physical illness. A sudden sympathetic activation seems to play a key role in the pathophysiology, but growing evidence is emerging about the role of inflammation in the subacute and chronic phases. An incidence of life-threatening complications occurring in the acute phase and at long-term follow-up has been demonstrated, comparable with the acute coronary syndrome. Multimodality imaging could be useful to stratify in-hospital and long-term prognosis. The efficacy of specific medical treatments in long-term follow-up should be investigated.

Abstract

We investigate the robustness of topological superconductors under the perturbing influence of a finite charge current. To this aim, we introduce a modified Kitaev Hamiltonian parametrically dependent on the quasiparticle momentum induced by the current. Using different quantifiers of the topological phase, such as the Majorana polarization and the edge state quantum conditional mutual information, we prove the existence of a finite critical value of the quasiparticle momentum below which edge modes and topological superconductivity survive. We also discuss how a finite current breaks time reversal symmetry and changes the topological class in the Altland-Zirnbauer classification scheme compared to the case of isolated systems. 40. c-MYC-dependent transcriptional inhibition of autophagy is implicated in Cisplatin sensitivity in HPV-positive Head and Neck Cancer

Abstract

Autophagy is important for removal, degradation and recycling of damaged organelles, proteins, and lipids through the degradative action of lysosomes. In addition to its catabolic function, autophagy is important in cancer and viral-mediated tumorigenesis, including Human Papillomavirus (HPV) positive cancers. HPV infection is a major risk factor in a subset of Head and Neck Cancer (HNC), for which no targeted therapies are currently available. Herein, we assessed autophagy function in HPV-positive HNC. We showed that HPV-positive HNC cells presented a transcriptional and functional impairment of autophagic process compared to HPV-negative cells, which was reactivated by knocking-down HPV E6/E7 oncoproteins, the drivers of cellular transformation. We found that the oncoprotein c-MYC was stabilized and triggered in HPV-positive cell lines. This resulted in the reduced binding of the MiT/TFE transcription factors to their autophagy targets due to c-MYC competition. Thus, knock-down of c-MYC induced the upregulation of autophagic and lysosomal genes in HPV-positive HNC cells, as well as the increase of autophagic markers at the protein level. Moreover, HPV oncoprotein E7 upregulated the expression of the phosphatase inhibitor CIP2A, accounting for c-MYC upregulation and stability in HPV + HNC cells. CIP2A mRNA expression negatively correlated with autophagy gene expression in tumor tissues from HNC patients, showing, for the first time, its implication in a transcriptional autophagic context. Both CIP2A and c-MYC knock-down, as well as pharmacological downregulation of c-MYC, resulted in increased resistance to Cisplatin treatment. Our results not only show a novel way by which HPV oncoproteins manipulate the host machinery, but also provide more insights on the role of autophagy in chemoresistance, with possible implications for targeted HPV-positive HNC therapy.

Abstract

Thermoelectrical properties are frequently used to characterize the materials and endow the free energy from wasted heat for useful purposes. Here, we show that linear thermoelectric effects in tunnel junctions (TJs) with Fe-based superconductors, not only address the dominance between particle and hole states, but even provide information about the superconducting order parameter symmetry. In particular, we observe that nodal order parameters present a maximal thermoelectric effect at lower temperatures than for nodeless cases. Finally, we show that superconducting TJs between iron-based and BCS superconductors could provide a thermoelectric efficiency ZT exceeding 6 with a linear Seebeck coefficient around $S\approx 800\;\mu\text{V/K}$ at a few Kelvin. Abstract

A tight binding supercell approach is used for the calculation of the electronic structure of the (111) LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface. The confinement potential at the interface is evaluated solving a discrete Poisson equation by means of an iterative method. In addition to the effect of the confinement, local Hubbard electron-electron terms are included at mean-field level within a fully self-consistent procedure. The calculation carefully describes how the two-dimensional electron gas arises from the quantum confinement of electrons near the interface due to band bending potential. The resulting electronic sub-bands and Fermi surfaces show full agreement with the electronic structure determined by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. In particular, it is analyzed how the effect of local Hubbard interactions changes the density distribution over the layers from the interface to the bulk. Interestingly, the two-dimensional electron gas at interface is not depleted by local Hubbard interactions which indeed induce an enhancement of the electron density between the first layers and the bulk., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

Questo lavoro di tesi di laurea magistrale si concentra sulla rappresentazione dei personaggi femminili nella narrativa italiana dalla fine dell’Ottocento fino al secondo dopoguerra e si propone come obiettivo l’analisi delle loro principali caratteristiche e in che modo queste riflettessero la reale situazione vissuta dalle donne. A tal fine, sono stati presi in considerazione due autori significativi del Novecento letterario: Italo Svevo e Alberto Moravia. Il primo capitolo si concentra sulle figure femminili di Senilità (1898) e de La coscienza di Zeno (1923). Della prima opera sono state analizzate Angiolina e Amalia al fine di osservare in che modo queste riflettessero le rappresentazioni delle donne diffuse nella fine dell’Ottocento, dalla femme fatale alla segregazione dell’eros femminile, mentre del secondo romanzo sono stati analizzati in particolare Augusta, Carla e Ada e i ruoli che svolgono nella vita del protagonista, in un contesto caratterizzato dall’avvento del fascismo. Il secondo capitolo si concentra sui personaggi femminili de Gli indifferenti (1929) e La ciociara (1956). De Gli indifferenti sono state osservate le diverse rappresentazioni della donna diffuse durante il Ventennio fascista e in che modo queste fossero presenti nel romanzo attraverso Carla, Mariagrazia e Lisa, mentre de La ciociara si è osservata la rappresentazione di Cesira, una donna moderna e indipendente, tipica del periodo della Seconda guerra mondiale e del Dopoguerra. Infine, il terzo capitolo propone un’analisi linguistica ed espressiva di alcuni brevi estratti di Senilità e Gli indifferenti al fine di osservare in che modo le figure femminili si esprimano. Sono quindi stati presi in considerazione alcuni dei principali studi condotti nel corso del XX secolo che hanno come obiettivo l’identificazione dell’esistenza di un registro principalmente femminile, al fine di osservare se i personaggi di Italo Svevo e Alberto Moravia lo rispettino o superino tali stereotipi. This Master thesis focuses on the representation of female characters in Italian literature from the end of the 18th century until the second post-war period and its purpose is the analysis of their main features and whether they reflected the real condition women were living in. Therefore, two authors who have contributed significantly to 20th-century Italian literature have been taken into consideration: Italo Svevo and Alberto Moravia. The first chapter focuses on female characters in Senilità (1898) and Zeno’s Conscience (1923). The first novel analyses Angiolina and Amalia to observe to which degree they reflected the representation of women generally promoted towards the end of the 19th century, from the figure of the femme fatale to the segregation of female eros; the second novel specifically observes Augusta, Carla and Ada and which roles they play in the main character’s life, in a context dominated by the rise of fascism. The second chapter focuses on female characters from The time of indifference (1929) and La ciociara (1957). From The time of indifference, it is possible to see the different ways in which women were commonly represented during the Fascist period and to which degree these are included in the novel through Carla, Mariagrazia and Lisa; in La ciociara the main focus is on the representation of Cesira, a modern and independent woman, typical of the Second world war and post-war period. Lastly, the third chapter provides a linguistic and expressive analysis of short passages taken from Senilità and The time of indifference in order to observe how female characters express themselves. Therefore, this thesis takes into account the main research, conducted throughout the 20th century, with the purpose of identifying the existence of a mainly-female language to observe whether the characters of Italo Svevo and Alberto Moravia respected it or overcame such stereotypes.

Abstract

Background: The influence of different bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) morphology in the clinical course of infective endocarditis (IE) has not yet been investigated. This study aimed to describe the clinical and echocardiographic features of IE in patients with BAV (BAVIE) according to valve morphology.Methods: Patients with definite BAVIE prospectively enrolled in 4 high-volume referral centers from 2000 to 2019, were evaluated and divided into two groups according to the echocardiographic definition of fused BAV morphology: right-left coronary (RL type) and right-non-coronary or left-non-coronary (non-RL type) cusp fusion. All patients were followed up for 1 year.Results: 138 patients with BAVIE were included [male 77.7%; median age 52 (36.83-61.00 years)]: 112 patients with RL type (81%) and 26 patients with non-RL type BAV (19%), with no significant differences in age, sex and comorbidities between groups. Although 43% of the cohort had known BAV, the referral was late after symptom onset, particularly for the RL phenotype; time from symptom onset to hospitalization >30 days (31.3% vs 11.5%; p=0.032) and NYHA class ≥II (64.3% vs 42.3%; p=0.039) were more frequent in patients with RL type BAV than in patients with non-RL type BAV. Conversely, patients with non-RL type BAV had a higher incidence of hemorrhagic stroke (19.2% vs 5.4%; p=0.034) and high-grade atrio-ventricular block (11.5% vs 0.9%; p=0.021). Streptococcus viridans was more frequently isolated in patients with non-RL type BAV than in patients with RL type BAV (44% vs 24.1%; p=0.045). No difference in short- and intermediate-term mortality was observed between groups.Conclusions: Clinical profile and echocardiographic features in BAVIE patients may differ according to valve morphology and patients with BAVIE appear to be referred late, even when BAV disease is previously known.

Abstract

Drug-induced lipid accumulation in the liver may induce two clinically relevant conditions, drug-induced steatosis (DIS) and drug-induced steatohepatitis (DISH). The list of drugs that may cause DIS or DISH is long and heterogeneous and includes therapeutically relevant molecules that cannot be easily replaced by less hepatotoxic medicines, therefore making specific strategies necessary for DIS/DISH prevention or treatment. For years, the only available tools to achieve these goals have been antioxidant drugs and free radical scavengers, which counteract drug-induced mitochondrial dysfunction but, unfortunately, have only limited efficacy. In the present review we illustrate how in vitro preclinical research unraveled new key players in the pathogenesis of specific forms of DISH, and how, in a few cases, proof of concept of the beneficial effects of their pharmacological modulation has been obtained in vivo in animal models of this condition. The key issue emerging from these studies is that, in selected cases, liver toxicity depends on mechanisms unrelated to those responsible for the desired, primary pharmacological effects of the toxic drug and, therefore, specific strategies can be designed to overcome steatogenicity without making the drug ineffective. In particular, the hepatotoxic drug could be given in combination with a second molecule intended to selectively antagonize its liver toxicity whilst, ideally, potentiating its desired pharmacological activity. Although most of the evidence that we discuss is from in vitro or animal models and will need to be further explored and validated in humans, it highlights new avenues to be pursued in order to improve the safety of steatogenic drugs.

Abstract

Assessment of psychological reactions to delays in fertility treatment have often utilized single clinic samples during the time that fertility treatments were paused. We, therefore, assessed emotional reactions to treatment cancelations due to COVID-19 in infertility patients across the United States after treatments had begun to resume.Cross-sectional survey emailed on 27 May 2020 and closed on 30 June 2020, to 53,600 FertilityIQ.com website users inquiring about their experience since the COVID-19 pandemic. A subset of FertilityIQ users (The majority of respondents (female, 67.4%; male, 61.7%) were 31-40 years old; most were planning to start treatment immediately (women, 42.6%; men, 44.7%) or were undergoing treatment (women, 34.9%; men, 29.8%) at the time of treatment cancelation. Patients (women, 21.1%; men 19.1%) or clinics (women, 57.7%; men, 40.4%) canceled treatment. Most clinics had resumed treatment at the time of the study (women, 90.0%; men, 73.7%). Cancelation resulted in sadness (women, 83.9%; men 86.7%) and anger (women, 45.4%; men, 36.7%); greater than half of the participants whose treatment was canceled (women: 66.8%,Respondents were distressed/concerned about the effect of the pandemic on their fertility. Distress was highest in women with a poorer fertility prognosis, no control over treatment cancelation, and high concern about the effect of treatment delay on pregnancy chances. Emotional support, education regarding treatment delay and fertility, and efforts where possible, to include patients in decisions to delay treatment are warranted in future treatment delays.

Abstract

Fabry disease is a rare X-linked genetic disorder, caused by partial or total loss of function of the lysosomal enzyme α-galactosidase A that induces glycosphingolipid accumulation in various organs and tissues, modifying their structure and function. Cardiovascular involvement in classic and late onset forms has emerged to be a major determinant of prognosis. In recent years, a constant evolution in imaging techniques and their mindful application has led to interesting results in the diagnostic workup, progressively reducing time required to recognize early signs of this disease. Owing to the growing awareness for diagnostic screening and the efficacy of the many therapeutic options currently available, the clinical history of Fabry patients has changed during the last decades. Therefore, an early diagnosis of Fabry disease and especially of cardiac involvement is essential to promptly adopt an adequate therapy.

Introduction Double-chambered right ventricle (DCRV) is a rare congenital heart defect with right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) obstruction. The right ventricle (RV) is divided into anatomically proximal high-pressure and distal low-pressure chambers by abnormal muscle bundle. DCRV is frequently associated with others congenital heart defects, particularly ventricular septal defects (VSDs). Although its typically presents during childhood and adolescence, it can also present in adulthood. Case Presentation An 84-years-old woman was admitted to our hospital, in emergency department, with a 30-days history of worsening dyspnea and exercise intolerance. She was Ukrainian and did not speak Italian or English. The patient past medical history was unknow except for untreated bilateral glaucoma complicated by blindness. Vital signs were notable for tachycardia, tachypnea (respiratory rate, 28/minute), blood pressure of 118/76 mm Hg, SpO2 of 91%. Physical exam revealed left-sided parasternal systolic murmurs, abolished vesicular murmur at lung bases and jugular vein distension with hepatojugular reflux. The ECG showed atrial fibrillation. Chest X-ray showed moderate cardiomegaly, bilateral pleural effusions, and pulmonary congestion. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) was performed and revealed a normal-sized left ventricle with mildly reduced left ventricle ejection fraction (EF 48%), left atrial enlargement, biventricular hypertrophy with asymmetrical interventricular septal hypertrophy. Also, we found massive right atrium and enlarged right ventricle with reduced longitudinal contractility (TAPSE of 13 mm and tricuspid annular tissue Doppler S’ velocity = 7.0 cm/sec). Color flow Doppler in parasternal short-axis view revealed a turbulent systolic flow into the right ventricle. Continuous-wave spectral Doppler analysis showed a peak velocity of 5.6 m/ sec corresponding to a peak gradient of 120 mmHg. Real time 3D-TTE confirmed the of mid-ventricular obstruction due to abnormal trabecular tissue. Therapy including diuretics, beta-blockers and anticoagulants was started. Subsequently, a transesophageal echocardiography (TOE) confirmed the presence of an anomalous mid-ventricular muscle bundle and revealed an associated small sub-aortic ventricular septal defect (VSD) leading to the diagnosis of acute RV failure due to double-chambered RV with VSD and atrial fibrillation. Due to the high risk of complications, patient was considered not amenable for surgery. She was discharged on medical therapy. Conclusions We report a rare case of DCRV and VSD diagnosed in an elderly patient. Due to its rarity, DCRV continues to be misdiagnosed, especially in adulthood. Three-dimensional echocardiography and TOE were most useful tool to define diagnosis and pathophysiology in such an elderly and non-compliant patient.
