The United Nations promulgated Agenda 21 in 1992, thereby recognizing education as the pathway to a more sustainable future. The launch of education for sustainable development (ESD) activities and the growing number of related studies have created an urgent need for a thorough and comprehensive review of the field. Based on 2779 publications from the related literature in the SSCI index from 1992 to 2022, this study outlines the growth characteristics, research areas, and research methods, and conducts a statistical analysis of the contributing forces of countries, institutions, and authors to demonstrate that the literature is mainly generated in developed countries. Meanwhile, this study identifies ten core journals and finds that highly productive institutions are characterized by close relationships and long-term in-depth research and collaboration with authors. Finally, a combination of Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) theme models, manual coding, and pyLDAvis visualization tools identified five research themes, including foundations of ESD research, environmental education, higher education for sustainable development, sustainable development capacity, and educational technology innovation. The intellectual structure of research in this emerging interdisciplinary field is revealed, and this study provides a reference for scholars in this discipline.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in more than 440 million confirmed cases globally and almost 6 million reported deaths as of March 2022. Consequently, the world experienced grave repercussions to citizens’ lives, health, wellness, and the economy. In responding to such a disastrous global event, countermeasures are often implemented to slow down and limit the virus’s rapid spread. Meanwhile, disaster recovery, mitigation, and preparation measures have been taken to manage the impacts and losses of the ongoing and future pandemics. Data-driven techniques have been successfully applied to many domains and critical applications in recent years. Due to the highly interdisciplinary nature of pandemic management, researchers have proposed and developed data-driven techniques across various domains. However, a systematic and comprehensive survey of data-driven techniques for pandemic management is still missing. In this article, we review existing data analysis and visualization techniques and their applications for COVID-19 and future pandemic management with respect to four phases (namely, Response, Recovery, Mitigation, and Preparation) in disaster management. Data sources utilized in these studies and specific data acquisition and integration techniques for COVID-19 are also summarized. Furthermore, open issues and future directions for data-driven pandemic management are discussed.

Hip fracture is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality, especially among the elderly. Current evidence on the association between cigarette smoking and mortality in hip-fracture patients is controversial. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies on this association.The databases Medline/PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched for studies that estimated the effect of smoking on the risk of mortality in hip-fracture patients. Pooled analyses were conducted of the associations, expressed in relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Heterogeneity was assessed using the IA total of six articles involving 3739 hip-fracture patients were included in the meta-analysis. Our results indicate that ever-active smoking was significantly associated with an increased risk of death in hip-fracture patients (pooled RR=1.26; 95% CI: 1.08-1.46). In further subgroup analysis, the risk of death was significantly higher in ever-active smokers than in never smokers in White participants (pooled RR=1.23; 95% CI: 1.05-1.44) and elderly aged ≥60 years (pooled RR=1.19; 95% CI: 1.01-1.40), with no significant association in Asian participants (pooled RR=1.42; 95% CI: 0.95-2.11). Current smokers had more risk of death than never smokers (pooled RR=1.26; 95% CI: 1.08-1.46). The association was significant in follow-up periods of ≤1 year (pooled hazard ratio, HR=1.34; 95% CI: 1.05-1.71), 3 years (pooled HR=1.22; 95% CI: 1.05-1.43), and 5 years (pooled HR=1.26; 95% CI: 1.08-1.46).Cigarette smoking is associated with an increased risk of mortality in hip-fracture patients, especially in elderly patients aged ≥60 years, current smokers, and White participants. With the extension of follow-up period, the effect on mortality of smoking is profound and lasting.

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) leads to anoxia and ischemia of cardiomyocytes, followed by apoptosis. This study investigated the protective effect of ginsenoside Rg1 (Rg1) on myocardial ischemia injury in rats with AMI. Rats were randomly divided into five groups: group A (blank control group), group B (hypoxia/reoxygenation group), group C (hypoxia/reoxygenation + 10 mg/L Rg1), group D (hypoxia/reoxygenation + 20 mg/L Rg1) and group E (hypoxia/reoxygenation + 40 mg/L Rg1). The survival rate, apoptosis rate, expression of cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4), fibroblast growth factor 9 (FGF9), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), microvessel density and myocardial infarction area of rats in each group were compared. The expressions of CDK4 and FGF9, the contents of SOD and GSH-Px in groups C, D and E injected with Rg1 were significantly promoted compared to group B without Rg1 injection (P lt; 0.05). The survival rate of myocardial cells was significantly increased while the apoptosis rate was significantly decreased in group C, D, E compared to group B (P lt; 0.05). On the 3rd, 7th and 10th day following Rg1 treatment, the infarct area of E group was significantly decreased in three groups C, D, E, and the microvessel density of infarct area was significantly increased compared with group B (P lt; 0.05). So, Rg1 can improve the survival rate of myocardial cells, reduce the apoptosis rate and the area of myocardial infarction, and increase the microvessel density of infarct area, thus playing a protective role in ischemic myocardial cells of AMI rats.

The present study was to investigated differential expressed genes (GEGs) in ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM), and to construct regulation networks, and to study the correlation between myocardial infarction risk.Data sets were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) to screen out messenger RNA (mRNA) and long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) differentially expressed between ICM samples and normal samples. Gene Ontology (GO) function analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis were performed. Differentially expressed mRNA and lncRNA were analyzed, and bioinformatics methods were used to predict and analyze microRNA (miRNA), and a competing endogenous RNA (Hub gene) regulatory network was constructed. Using the Limma software package in R language, DEGs of ICM were screened with non-heart failure donors as the control group under the conditions that the differential expression ratio was not less than 2 times, and the corrected P value was0.05. The ClusterProfiler software package was used for GO enrichment analysis and KEGG enrichment analysis. The Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes/Proteins (STRING) 11.0 online database was used to screen key genes for protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis.The GO function analysis and KEGG pathway analysis showed that the DEGs were significantly enriched in metabolic pathways, oxidative phosphorylation, extracellular matrix receptor interactions, and other pathways, and were closely related to fibrosis, collagen catabolic process, and inflammatory response function, and a Hub gene regulatory network related to ICM lncRNA was constructed. Bioinformatics methods were used to effectively analyze the DEGs of ICM, and the Hub gene regulatory network of ICM was successfully constructed.This study identified a certain risk correlation between ICM susceptibility genes and myocardial infarction.

Mammals have ability to perform accurate and robust path integration-based metric navigation even in the absence of visual or other environmental cues, which provides a new idea to find brain-inspired solutions to tackle the problems of serious drift of IMU-based inertial navigation of UAV when the external sensory cues are not available. Multi-scale grid cells in the medial entorhinal cortex are thought to be a fundamental portion of mammals’ ability to perform 3D path integration-based metric navigation. This paper studies and presents, for the first time, a neural system to implement path integration-based metric navigation in 3D environments integrating networks of encoding and decoding multi-scale grid cells using neural dynamic models, i.e. three-dimensional continuous attractor network and neural cliques, respectively. Experimental results show the neural system can successfully path integrate self-motion information for large-scale 3D navigation and provides robust and error-correcting position information, displaying possible neural solution to overcome serious drift of IMU-based inertial navigation of UAV in the absence of external sensory cues.

The parallel seismic method is an effective method to detect the length of pile. In the paper, based on the ray theory of Snell’s law, the two methods of determining the pile length by the first transmission P-wave in the side hole are discussed and modified. The error influencing factors of both two methods are then analysed. Finally, the finite element software ABAQUS was used to simulate the inspection of pile foundations by the parallel seismic method. The numerical simulation results were compared with the results of the error calculation theory to verify the applicability of the error calculation theory. The error calculation theory was then tested and applied in an engineering example. The results show that (1) in order to reduce errors, unreasonable data points need to be removed when fitting the inspection data points and (2) the larger the pile slenderness ratio, the smaller the distance between the side holes and the pile, and the more accurate the pile length results obtained.

Although some research papers have suggested that smoking may increase mortality in patients with sepsis, no evidence has been produced in this regard. This systematic research evaluated the risk of death in patients with sepsis who were smokers to facilitate better clinical decision making.This is a systematic review registered in PROPERO (CRD42022296654). Searches were conducted to identify suitable studies from the databases of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and the Cochrane Controlled Register of Trials from January 1980 to June 2021. Two independent reviewers screened the articles using keywords and extracted the data. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to evaluate the quality of evidence. The primary endpoints included the mortality of patients with sepsis.Five studies involving 2694 participants were included in our study. Among the five included articles, three studies had an NOS score of 6, while the other two had an NOS score of 7. The results showed that a significantly higher risk of death was observed in smokers with sepsis compared with non-smokers with sepsis (hazard ratio, HR=1.62; 95% CI: 1.11-2.37, p=0.01). Among the patients followed for more than 2 months, the mortality rate of smokers was significantly higher (2.33 times) than that of non-smokers (HR=2.33; 95% CI: 1.83-2.96, p0.01). The difference in mortality did not reach statistical significance when the follow-up period was shorter than 2 months (HR=1.22; 95% CI: 0.96-1.56, p=0.10).Smoking increased mortality in patients with sepsis when the follow-up period was longer than 2 months.

Background Estimated pulse wave velocity (ePWV) has revealed excellent performance in predicting cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. However, whether ePWV predicts all-cause mortality and CVD mortality in populations with obesity remains elusive. Methods We performed a prospective cohort including 49,116 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2014. Arterial stiffness was evaluated by ePWV. Weighted univariate, multivariate Cox regression and receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis was used to assess the effects of ePWV on the risk of all-cause and CVD mortality. In addition, the two-piecewise linear regression analysis was used to describe the trend of ePWV affecting mortality and identify the thresholds that significantly affect mortality. Results A total of 9929 participants with obesity with ePWV data and 833 deaths were enrolled. Based on the multivariate Cox regression results, the high ePWV group had a 1.25-fold higher risk of all-cause mortality and a 5.76-fold higher risk of CVD mortality than the low-ePWV group. All-cause and CVD mortality risk increased by 123% and 44%, respectively, for every 1 m/s increase in ePWV. ROC results showed that ePWV had an excellent accuracy in predicting all-cause mortality (AUC = 0.801) and CVD mortality (AUC = 0.806). Furthermore, the two-piecewise linear regression analysis exhibited that the minimal threshold at which ePWV affected participant mortality was 6.7 m/s for all-cause mortality and 7.2 m/s for CVD mortality. Conclusions ePWV was an independent risk factor for mortality in populations with obesity. High ePWV levels were associated with an increased all-cause and CVD mortality. Thus, ePWV can be considered a novel biomarker to assess mortality risk in patients with obesity.

Doping with Sb3+ and Mn2+ significantly improved the optical properties of a (C8H14N2)2CdCl6 metal halide and showed double emission from two different luminescence centers ([SbCl6]3− and [MnCl6]4−), which was highly sensitive to the excitation wavelength.

COVID-19 has spread worldwide, and over 140 million people have been confirmed infected, over 3 million people have died, and the numbers are still increasing dramatically. The consensus has been reached by scientists that COVID-19 can be transmitted in an airborne way, and human-to-human transmission is the primary cause of the fast spread of COVID-19. Thus, mobility should be restricted to control the epidemic, and many governments worldwide have succeeded in curbing the spread by means of control policies like city lockdowns. Against this background, we propose a novel fine-grained transmission model based on real-world human mobility data and develop a platform that helps the researcher or governors to explore the possibility of future development of the epidemic spreading and simulate the outcomes of human mobility and the epidemic state under different epidemic control policies. The proposed platform can also support users to determine potential contacts, discover regions with high infectious risks, and assess the individual infectious risk. The multi-functional platform aims at helping the users to evaluate the effectiveness of a regional lockdown policy and facilitate the process of screening and more accurately targeting the potential virus carriers.

Event crowd management has been a significant research topic with high social impact. When some big events happen such as an earthquake, typhoon, and national festival, crowd management becomes the first priority for governments (e.g., police) and public service operators (e.g., subway/bus operator) to protect people’s safety or maintain the operation of public infrastructures. However, under such event situations, human behavior will become very different from daily routines, which makes prediction of crowd dynamics at big events become highly challenging, especially at a citywide level. Therefore in this study, we aim to extract the “deep” trend only from the current momentary observations and generate an accurate prediction for the trend in the short future, which is considered to be an effective way to deal with the event situations. Motivated by these, we build an online system called DeepUrbanEvent, which can iteratively take citywide crowd dynamics from the current one hour as input and report the prediction results for the next one hour as output. A novel deep learning architecture built with recurrent neural networks is designed to effectively model these highly complex sequential data in an analogous manner to video prediction tasks. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed methodology to the existing approaches. Lastly, we apply our prototype system to multiple big real-world events and show that it is highly deployable as an online crowd management system.

The chloroplast is essential for photosynthesis, plant growth and development. As semiautonomous organelles, the biogenesis and development of chloroplasts need to be well-regulated during plant growth and stress responses. Low or high ambient temperatures are adverse environmental stresses that affect crop growth and productivity. As sessile organisms, plants regulate the development and function of chloroplasts in a fluctuating temperature environment to maintain normal photosynthesis. This review focuses on the molecular mechanisms and regulatory factors required for chloroplast biogenesis and development under cold or heat stress conditions and highlights the importance of chloroplast gene transcription, RNA metabolism, ribosome function and protein homeostasis essential for chloroplast development under adverse temperature conditions.

Widespread alterations in the corpus callosum (CC) microstructure and organization have been found in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); however, few studies have investigated the diffusion characteristics and volume of transcallosal fiber tracts defined by specific cortical projections in ADHD, which is important for identifying distinct functional interhemispheric connection abnormalities. In the current study, an automated fiber-tract quantification (AFQ) approach based on diffusion tensor imaging identified seven CC tracts according to their cortical projections and estimated diffusion parameters and volume among 76 drug-naïve ADHD patients (53 boys and 23 girls) and 37 typically developing children (TDC) (20 boys and 17 girls) matched for age, IQ, and handedness. We found significantly lower fractional anisotropy (FA) in the occipital and superior parietal tracts and higher mean diffusivity (MD) in the posterior, superior parietal and anterior frontal tracts in children with ADHD compared with TDC. In addition, lower FA and higher radial diffusivity (RD) in the occipital callosal tract were significantly associated with higher hyperactivity and impulsivity performance in ADHD. In addition, sex-by-diagnosis interactions were observed in the occipital, posterior and superior parietal tracts. Girls with ADHD showed decreased FA and volume in the occipital tract, which were significantly associated with increased impulsivity performance and poor response control, and increased MD in the posterior and superior parietal callosal tracts, which were significantly associated with increased inattention performance, whereas boys with ADHD merely showed decreased volume in the frontal tract. Our results elucidated that sex-specific alterations in the CC tracts potentially underlie ADHD symptomatology and further suggested a differential contribution of abnormalities in different CC tracts to impulsivity and inattention among girls with ADHD.

Reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) is a technique widely used to investigate the expression of genes. An appropriate reference gene (RG) is essential for RT-qPCR analysis to obtain accurate and reliable results. Caragana intermedia plays an important role in afforestation as a bush. However, due to the lack of appropriate RGs, the research on development-related genes is limited. In this study, the selection for suitable RGs of different organs at various development stages to normalize the results of RT-qPCR about development-related genes was performed. To test the expression stability across all samples, we used the software algorithms such as geNorm, NormFinder, BestKeeper, and RefFinder to evaluate all the candidate RGs. Our results showed that CiEF1α was the most stable RG with little fluctuation among all samples. In addition, CiGAPDH in roots, CiSKIP1 in stems and leaves, and CiEF1α in different organs were selected as the most stable RGs. To confirm the applicability of the most stable RGs, the relative expression of CiWRKY17 was normalized using different candidate RGs. Taken together, our research laid a foundation for the study of development-related genes in C. intermedia.

The working space of small motor stators is narrow, and most of them are manual winding. It is difficult to guarantee the uniform arrangement of enameled wires by multi-wire winding. To solve these problems, a three-phase parallel equivalent multi-wire winding robot is proposed to achieve large output torque of the motor. Firstly, according to the equivalent model, the structure of the large arm, small arm and manipulator is designed to determine the motion model of the winding robot. Euler's kinematics theory is used to analyze the change of the working position of the arm, and the rotation matrix of the arm and the constraint equation of the motion vector of each branch chain are established. The motion model of the arm and the manipulator are established using inverse kinematics and analytical analysis. The motion pose of each joint of the winding robot is studied to ensure that the robot realizes a three-phase parallel multi-wire winding motion. ADAMS software was used for kinematic simulation analysis of the winding robot. The displacement of the branch chain on the xyz axis was represented by the torque of the virtual motor to verify the correctness of the inverse kinematics solution and the closure condition of the manipulator block. Finally, the ROS simulation platform is built to simulate the joint motion planning of the winding robot to verify the multi-line parallel principle and the feasibility of the multi-line parallel winding hybrid robot. The research results of this paper provide a theoretical reference for multi-wire parallel winding equipment control.

Global climate change has great impacts on plant growth and development, reducing crop productivity worldwide. Rice (Oryza sativa L.), one of the world's most important food crops, is susceptible to high-temperature stress from seedling stage to reproductive stage. In this review, we summarize recent advances in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying heat stress responses in rice, including heat sensing and signaling, transcriptional regulation, transcript processing, protein translation, and post-translational regulation. We also highlight the irreversible effects of high temperature on reproduction and grain quality in rice. Finally, we discuss challenges and opportunities for future research on heat stress responses in rice. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

This study aims to assess the effects of the partial replacement of whole corn silage (WCS) with fermented pineapple peel residue (FPPR) on growth, serological parameters, muscle quality, rumen microorganisms, and fecal microorganisms. A total of 24 Chuanzhong black goats weighing 10.23 ± 1.42 kg were evaluated in a randomized complete trial design in accordance with the following treatments: (1) 0% FPPR in the diet, (2) 25% FPPR in the diet, and (3) 50% FPPR in the diet. In goats, the partial substitution of FPPR for WCS increased the abundance of probiotics, such as Blautia, Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens, and Ruminococcus albus, and did not exert significant effects on overall serological parameters and muscle quality. In conclusion, the partial substitution of FPPR for WCS in the diet did not impair or affect the productive performance of goats.

Background:Although attentional bias modification training (ABM) and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) are two effective methods to decrease the symptoms of generalized anxiety disorders (GAD), to date, no randomized controlled trials have yet evaluated the effectiveness of an intervention combining internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (ICBT) and ABM for adults with GAD.Aims:This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of an intervention combining ICBT and ABM for adults with GAD.Method:Sixty-three participants diagnosed with GAD were randomly assigned to the treatment group (ICBT with ABM; 31 participants) or the control group (ICBT with ABM placebo; 32 participants), and received 8 weeks of treatment and three evaluations. The CBT, ABM and ABM-placebo training were conducted via the internet. The evaluations were conducted at baseline, 8 weeks later, and 1 month later, respectively.Results:Both the treatment and control groups reported significantly reduced anxiety symptoms and attentional bias, with no clear superiority of either intervention. However, the treatment group showed a greater reduction in negative automatic thoughts than the control group after treatment and at 1-month follow-up (η2 = 0.123).Conclusion:The results suggest that although not differing in therapeutic efficacy, the intervention combining ICBT and ABM is superior to the intervention combining ICBT and ABM-placebo in the reduction of negative automatic thoughts. ABM may be a useful augmentation of ICBT on reducing anxiety symptoms.
